I've been living abroad for several years, and since a few months back I've been busy attending a class to get a certification. Thanks that at last I completed my final term exams and hence I can find more time to write. This time I'd like to share with you of what my instructor shared with our class. It has nothing to do with the subject he was teaching, yet with awesome energy, it captured the attention of the whole class. It was a video from Youtube. In fact they were just two videos, but they showed something that have been bothering me for a long time, without being able to express or articulate it myself. Whoever had creating the videos had really done a beautiful job. It gives me goose bump every time I watch them. Yes, I watched them again and again, and I could not resist from sharing them with you. The first video titled Did You Know 4-IV And the second one is Future Technology 2009. The year of technology invention (milliongenerator). If you have children or plan to have them, think about how are their chances to be able to compete with other kids from different parts of the world. Are they ready to compete, in any field? Are we doing enough to prepare them for this? If we already have seen them have problem to compete in today’s world, what is going to happen to them in the future? Translation: What would happen to them is what would happen to our beloved country. We have a lot of bright students, but are they going to be ready? What are our responsibilities as parents, as fellow students, as teachers, as businessmen/women, as leaders, and so forth? How we use all this information to help us today and to help us and our kids coping with future needs and competitions? What kind of skills, knowledge and talents they need to have in 15 or 20 years from now? Do we know? Do our teachers know? Do our leaders know? Do they want or care to know? With the stunning speed of development in technology, even country like USA was concern about their future generation’s ability to compete with China, India and European Countries. China and India are moving toward leading position. They are ready to take over US position. India is the fastest growing free market and democracy. Their number of honors student is more than the total number of kids in America ’s!!! An honors student is a student recognized for achieving high grades or high marks in their course work. What would happen in about 20 years from now, you imagine it yourself. We kind of see the trend right now. American’s jobs were shifted to Asia, virtually at no cost to the American Companies. It is so appealing to them that the trend is increasing upward with tremendous slope. Can we kind of predict where is Indonesia ’s future will be? Do we even know where our country position today is? I remember as a young student in Bandung, I have friends in my class from Malaysia, sent by their government to study in Indonesia. Today, few decades have passed since then and I have seen Indonesian people sending their kids to study in Malaysia. Is this what we call progress? Do you see enough core industries developing in Indonesia? Does our country produce enough food for its own people? Do we have sufficient infrastructures to support progress? Do we have a system that works? I personally believe the leading countries in this competition will have a tremendous impact on other capable countries which are lagging behind. Impact that can put Indonesia as a slave country without their people aware of it. Scary? What this means to you? Watch the videos again and ask yourself these questions. Are we ready to cope with today and future challenges? Are we ready to live our dreams? Get new articles delivered to your inbox. Free! Memory of an old beautiful song with the same title. I even forgot who played it until several hits on Youtube search engine brought me a name, and it was Greg Lake, the vocalist of Emerson Lake and Palmer. Another search using Google engine, reveals the meaning of the phrase that I had never taken attention on it before. C'est la vie apparently is an expression in French that means "That's life!" or "Such is life!" Wikipedia says that it is sometimes used as an expression to say that life is harsh but that one must accept it. True, in a sense that even though man has freedom to choose, but that freedom has also its limit. Here's the cover version as the original one is copyrighted. C'est la vie Have your leaves all turned to brown Will you scatter them around you C'est la vie. Do you love And then how am I to know If you don't let your love show for me C'est la vie. (Chorus) Oh, oh, c'est la vie. Oh, oh, c'est la vie. Who knows, who cares for me... C'est la vie. In the night Do you light a lover's fire Do the ashes of desire for you remain. Like the sea There's a love too deep to show Took a storm before my love flowed for you C'est la vie (Chorus) Oh, oh, c'est la vie. Oh, oh, c'est la vie. Who knows, who cares for me... C'est la vie. Like a song Out of tune and out of time All I needed was a rhyme for you C'est la vie. Do you give Do you live from day to day Is there no song I can play for you C'est la vie. (Chorus) Oh, oh, c'est la vie. Oh, oh, c'est la vie. Who knows, who cares for me... C'est la vie. Get new articles delivered to your inbox. Free! The first one was Assad Guitar Duo's performance that I watched in 2007. At JavaJazz, the big names of the two guitarists had attracted a sizeable number of music fans who packed a hall at JCC. Music fans were all happily sitting on the floor, making it easier for everybody to enjoy the show and to take pictures. The low stage arrangement has made it possible for people who sit on the first three rows to watch the musicians comfortably. Dewa Bujana (left) and Tohpati were both seen quite relax and played flawlessly with their guitars, reaffirming their strong positions in the local music community, be it jazz or pop. Tohpati was seen exchanging gestures with Dewa. In most of the compositions they changed roles smoothly a couple of times from playing melody to playing rhythm/bass, demonstrated their prowess as top class guitarists. Dewa was a bit more talkative than Tohpati in building communication with the audience. The compostions they played were taken Tohpati's album, and also from Bujana's, such as Layang-layang. Here's one of the compositions played by Dewa Bujana and Tohpati at the JavaJazz Festival, taken from Youtube, uploaded by PramborsRadio. While music fans normally give more attention and appreciation to vocalists rather than to musicians, the show has proven that even without singers people could enjoy the music and were captivated with just the sound of fingers that were dancing on the strings of guitars. The audience were sitting and listening intently, and were generous in giving their warm applauses at the end of each of the composition. Taking photos or videos with cell phones or small digital cameras were quite common these days, thanks to the advancement of the digital technology. Here's performance of Dewa and Tohpati in another music performance with Balawan in Trisum, uploaded by Ringstuben. Balawan is another big name from the country, famous with his high speed fingers in double neck guitar with each hand on each neck. Most, if not all, of the music fans stayed in the hall until end of the performance. It was definitely a successful show. Dewa and Tohpati have shown their class as two of the most talented guitarists in the country, and have proven that quality music could be produced and appreciated with two pieces of guitars, not only with complete big band and beautiful or handsome singers on the stage. It's again another unfamiliar name to my ears, but since I considered myself a fan of blues, I killed my hesitancies to face the legendary crowded traffic of Jakarta and decided to go. It was definitely the right decision, as it turned out to be one of the best local music performances that I have ever seen. I was really surprised to see Bentara Budaya Jakarta packed with so many people when I arrived. It was still early, and yet no empty seats were available, but I did not need a seat anyway. I was wondering what drove people to come while seeing a young man on the stage playing solo blues. His name is Adrian Adietomo who played songs from his own album, such as Tegangan Tinggi, Telegram, Blues Iblis, Pemberontak Terakhir, and Lepas Anjingmu. He's really good on his guitar, and the rhythmic sound of his foot helped him in performing a good music. Then at about 8 p.m., Gugun and the Blues Shelter took the stage. While I have never heard any of the songs that he played, that apparently taken mostly from his "Turn it On" album (released in 2006), to my eyes, ears and soul the group performance was really awesome, right from the first song to the end. Mohammad "Gugun" Gunawan, the group leader, guitarist and vocalist, electrified the audience with his superb performance. He's accompanied by Aditya "Bowie" Wibowo who played with full of energy on drums and Tri "Enti" Widodo on electric bass. Watch Youtube video below. It was taken from the annual Skegness Rock & Blues Festival in UK, 25th Jan 2009 on the Centre Stage. The group was the closing act of the festival and this was their final song. Amstrong was on electric bass. Great music! Bowie on drums heated up the night with his abundance energy. Tri "Enti" Widodo on electric bass fit well with group. And watch this, the cover version of Stevie Wonder's 'Superstition' performed by Gugun & Blues shelter at the 229 Club, Great Portland Street, London. It was taken during the band's January 2009 UK Tour. It's just fantastic! The packed Bentara Budaya Jakarta, with the audience fully hypnotized by Gugun and the Blues Shelter's performance. After their last song, the group played extra two songs to fulfill the audience request and everyone finally stood up and moved their bodies along with the rythm. It was a great performance indeed, thanks to Bentara Budaya Jakarta. Hopefully you can find his CD in the nearest music store. Highly recommended. There are a couple of very special songs and lyrics that will bring you back to and refresh your aging memories of the good old days. Just as what the Alan Parson Project says: Time, flowing like a river; Time, beckoning me; Who knows when we shall meet again, if ever; But time, keeps flowing like a river, to the sea. It's time to reconnect with your friends. The sooner the better, as you won't know whether you will have a chance to see them again next year. Some of them have gone already, and some will follow. Charge your handphone, and make calls. God Bless you. Epitaph King Crimson The wall on which the prophets wrote Is cracking at the seams. Upon the instruments of death The sunlight brightly gleams. When every man is torn apart With nightmares and with dreams, Will no one lay the laurel wreath When silence drowns the screams. Confusion will be my epitaph. As I crawl a cracked and broken path If we make it we can all sit back And laugh. But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying, Yes I fear tomorrow I'll be crying. Between the iron gates of fate, The seeds of time were sown, And watered by the deeds of those Who know and who are known; Knowledge is a deadly friend If no one sets the rules. The fate of all mankind I see Is in the hands of fools. Confusion will be my epitaph. As I crawl a cracked and broken path If we make it we can all sit back And laugh. But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying, Yes I fear tomorrow I'll be crying. I love you more than you'll ever know Blood Sweat & Tears If I ever leave you....you can say I told you so! And if I ever hurt you baby..... you know I hurt myself as well. Is that any way for a man to carry on Do you think I want my loved one gone Said I love you More than you'll ever know More than you'll ever know When I wasn't making much money You know where my paycheck went You know I brought it home to baby And I never spent a red cent Is that any way for a man to carry on Do you think I want my loved one gone Said I love you More than you'll ever know More than you'll ever know I'm not trying to be just any kind of man I'm just trying to be somebody You can love, trust and understand I know that I can be yeaaahhhh A part of you that no one else could see I just wanna hear,a hear ya say its allright yeahhh yeahhh I'm only flesh and blood But I can be everything that you demand I can be king of everythang Or just a tiny grain of sand Is that anyway for a man to carry on Do you think he wants his little loved one gone I love you baby, i love you baby i love youMore than you'll ever know If I ever leave you....you can say I told you so!
