The Art Depository presents the black and white photography of Kentucky artists, Harry L Hinkle and Jim Burchette from August 7 through September 13, 2008. An artist’s reception, open to the public, will be held on Friday, August 15 from 4 – 8 pm.
Our next exhibit Black & White, features two Kentucky artists, Harry Hinkle of Lexington and Jim Burchette from Morehead; both work with film and traditional darkroom development and printing. But the similarity ends with the materials.
Harry creates works with great detail and high definition, while Jim burns out all of the back ground to bring a very narrow focus to the image. Harry works traditionally and Jim works experimental. Jim is self taught; he has an image in his mind that he works diligently to get expressed onto the paper while Harry records an image expressed in perfect light. Black and white photographs from two artists that are 108 degrees separate.

The Art Depository presents the pencil work of three local artists, Dana Wolford, Suzanne Erny, and Jennifer Mercer from June 26 through August 2, 2008, with an artist’s reception, open to the public, on July 11 from 4 – 8 pm.

Dana Wolford, a self-taught artist with a passion for faces and color, uses colored pencils and watercolors to capture fleetingness of time and our short sojourn here.

Suzanne Erny has an art degree, but spent her early years raising her family and working in creative endeavors such as clothing design. Her portraits are of Native Americans in traditional dress sprinkled with a few cowboys.

Jennifer Mercer, Suzanne’s daughter, has benefit of her mother’s artistic genes. Mercer’s work is comprised of very tight graphite portraits that are often mistaken for photographs.

The Art Depository presents our third exhibit of art work and fine craft created by local nonprofessional artists. On display from May 22 through June 21, 2008, with an artist’s reception, open to the public, on May 23 from 4 – 8 pm.
This year's display includes pen & ink drawings, paintings, photographs, graphite portraits, pottery, wood turned bowls, wood jewelry boxes, natural stone jewelry, tatting and needlework, from fifteen local artists.

A Group Show of University of Kentucky Artists and Professors

The Art Depository will present a select group of students and professors from University of Kentucky College of Fine Arts, for an exhibit of works in downtown Nicholasville, KY from April 10, 2008 through May 10, 2008. An artist’s reception open to the public will be held on April 11, 2008 from 4 pm until 8 pm.

This year’s exhibit, the third for UK at the Art Depository, is extremely exciting. The quality of work is way above par for student work, covering a wide range including photography in three formats, oil painting, silkscreen, and fiber.

A Group Show by Asbury College Students & Alumni

Nicholasville, KY, February 18, 2008: Asbury College will present a select group of student at The Art Depository, in downtown Nicholasville, KY from February 16, 2008 through March 22, 2008. An artist’s reception open to the public will be held on February 22, 2008 from 4 pm until 8 pm.

This student-juried show includes some very exciting glass mosaic windows, slumped glass vases and plates, fused glass, raku pottery, paintings, drawings, and ceramics. This will be the third year Asbury College has appeared at the gallery. The quality of work in this show is worthy of any professional artist.

Located 20 minutes south of Lexington, Asbury College is a private, residential, liberal arts institution committed to academic excellence and spiritual vitality. Founded in 1890, the College offers 49 undergraduate majors plus graduate programs in special education, teaching English as a second language and alternative teacher certification programs in several disciplines to approximately 1,300 students. Brilliant Pastels - A group show of pastel drawings

Nicholasville, KY, July 20, 2007 A judge, a clinic manager, a nurse, and a banker are among the Lexington-area artists whose work in pastels will be featured in “Brilliant Pastels,” an exhibit at The Art Depository in Nicholasville, July 27-September 1. An artist’s reception open to the public will be held August 24 from 4 pm until 8 pm.

“Brilliant Pastels” will feature the work of Lexington-based artists Marianna McDonald and her students. McDonald’s work has been displayed throughout the U.S. and abroad. McDonald has worked full-time as an artist in pastels and oils since 2001, after an earlier career in graphic design. She is a Murray State University graduate.

McDonald has taught classes and workshops in pastels since 2001. While some of her students have previous art experience in other media, McDonald’s classes are the first serious foray into art for others.

McDonald likens pastel work to “using a new box of crayons.” The flexible nature of the work and rich color possible with pastels is a draw for the exhibiting artists as well. Marta Elam Dorton, a stay-at-home mom with a graphic arts background, notes that “I instantly fell in love with pastels due to the immediacy of the colors applied.” UK Plastic Surgery manager Sherry Lackey says “I like the method because it allows for some revision as you go, and I usually obtain a result that is good enough that it surprises me time and again.”

The time spent working with pastels provides a much-needed release for some of McDonald’s students. Lucinda Masterton, Judge for the 5^th Division of the Fayette Circuit Court, describes McDonald’s class as “my weekly opportunity to escape to pastels.” Debbie Waitkus, a financial service representative at American Founders Bank, says “Art is my therapy. It is never boring.” Beth Barnes, director of UK’s School of Journalism and Telecommunications, enjoys the classes because “The only decision I have to make is what color I want to use next. It’s a very refreshing change from my daily work.”

The Art Depository is currently open Thursday & Friday from 10 am – 7 pm, and Saturday from 10 am – 4 pm. Appointments can be made to view the gallery Monday - Wednesday by calling 859-885-0106.

For a $100 donation you can sponsor a Main Street Banner for the city of Nicholasville. Each summer the citizens of Nicholasville get together and paint banners to hang from Main Street for the fall season. It's great fun and the folks always have a great time painting. Every fall the traffic down Main Street slows to catch a view of all the new works. The sponsor banner hangs at the beginning of the banner parade. You get to keep your banner as well as a lovely CD of images creating the banners and hanging on Main Street.

The gallery is looking for creative people in Jessamine and surrounding counties to bring their works of art to the gallery to jury into a show. To enter, you must create art as a hobby or for the shear pleasure of creating art.

The Art Depository will host the Non-Professional Artists Exhibit #2 from June 14, 2007 through July 22, 2007 at 106 E Maple Street Nicholasville, KY 40356. There will be a public reception for the artists on June 22, 2007 from 4-8 pm.

Any work not created from a kit is eligible. So all hobbyists get your work ready. This includes oil and acrylic paintings, artist pulled prints, watercolors, stamping, card making, needlework, quilting, handwork, beadwork, jewelry, stained glass, papermaking, wood carving, latte work, woodwork, pottery, sculpture, carvings, iron works, stained glass.

Work is to be delivered to the gallery June 1, 2007 through June 9, 2007. Gallery hours are Thursday and Friday 10 am – 7 pm and Saturdays 10 am – 4 pm.

All work must be professionally presented. Framed work should be ready to hang with wire – no saw-tooth hangers please. Nicholasville, KY, April 26, 2007: Jane Marie Watwood will exhibit at The Art Depository in downtown Nicholasville, KY from May 3, 2007 through June 9, 2007. An artist’s reception open to the public will be held May 4, 2007 from 4 pm until 8 pm.

Who is Jane? Jane Marie Watwood is collectively: Sarah Jane Gray, Karine Marie Wilson and Hilary Watwood Brown – 3 MFA candidates at the University of Kentucky. This is not Jane’s first show; the three have had collaborative work at the Rogue Buddha Gallery in Minneapolis. The Art Depository in Nicholasville Kentucky will be her second exhibit, growing the process begun in the first.

According to Ms Gray:

Whether it's offering a critique, modeling for one another's projects, introducing one another to a new process, or taking turns altering one another's work, we have found that collaboration greatly enriches and directs the artistic process. This exhibit is a celebration of friendship, of our own artistic growth, and of the communities that influence and nourish the production of art.

The three women plan to carry on the collaborative efforts of their group …to explore their own ideas of femininity and the possibilities that present with collaborating with other women.
