I feel like a curmudgeon for saying this, but what is happening with girl's toys and play costumes? Everything is pink, glitter and bling. I understand many little girls of a certain age love the color pink and go through a princess stage. But it looks to me like a rather disproportionate number of girls toys are promoting limited ideals for girls: be a princess, rock star or a celebrity.

Where is this all going? I don't know. It would take up too much time and space on this post and I'm sure you don't want to read it. But I do like books like this one illustrated by Jack Keats - How Animals Sleep. It's interesting and real life. There. Off my podium. Nuff said.

I'm a big fan of Textile art in children's picture books. These type of illustrations comprise a small percentage of children's books, which makes them even more special.

One artist who does this type of work is Clare Beaton. Beaton, who says she has always had a love of Folk Art, handstitches her illustrations. She works with felt and vintage buttons, trims and fabrics to create her textile art.

It seems redundant to say so, but make sure to click on the pictures so you can see them full size. I size the images larger so you can see all the detail and appreciate the details.

Awhile back I did a post back on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs illustrated by Textile artist Belinda Downes. This is one of my favorite illustrations in the book, love that curving row of beds!

Jeannie Baker's Polar is another book I blogged about with textile art illustrations. I think the sweet charm of this book would be especially appealing to little children. Her work has evolved and changed much since this book.

On another note, I haven't posted as much lately, due to working and personal matters. I hope to change this before too long and settle into a routine with more regular posting. So please bear with me, I'm not giving up the ship, just on a bit of a detour!

Childcraft Library, Poems and Rhymes, Volume 1

I'm turning once again to my trusty Childcraft Library which is chock full of great vintage illustrations from many beloved illustrators of the past.

The combination of photograph and illustration is kitschy and sweet. I have to say as the mother of four that I don't recall many photographic moments like this lol. Illustration by Eloise Wilken and photo from Tell City Chair Company.

This one isn't too hard to guess. Pen and ink work by Garth Williams with his distinctive gentle animals and characters.

This one I wouldn't have guessed. My first thought was Feodor Rojankovsky as the illustrator, but it's not. Anyone care to guess?

I also wouldn't have been able to guess this one, though I love his work. The illustrator is Nicolas Mordvinoff.

Illustrator is Eraldo Carugati - anyone familiar with this artist?

Whales, Whalers and Whaling Art

This past winter I went on a reading jag. One of the books I read was by Nathaniel Philbrick called Revenge of the Whale. Although this book was adapted for young people from In The Heart of The Sea, A New York Times Best Seller, and longer version of the book. I wouldn't recommend this book for anyone younger than 13, some of the subject matter is very gruesome.

Revenge of the Whale is a true story about one of the most well known maritime disasters of the 19th century - the sinking of the Whaleship Essex by an enraged sperm whale in 1821. It was this horrific event that inspired Herman Melville to write Moby-Dick.

I've never read Moby Dick, but have seen it in movie form, one with actor Gregory Peck and the other with William Hurt. (Seeing photos from the two different movies makes me want to watch them again.)

I think my interest in whaling days sparked when I posted a book here called Whaling Days, written by Carol Carrick and illustrated by David Frampon.

Fire Breathing Dragon Shaped Bridge in Da Nang, Vietnam

What is one of the coolest bridges in the world? It would have to be the Dragon Bridge in Da Nang, Vietnam. Recently unveiled, this bridge spans 1864 feet and not only looks like a dragon, it breathes fire and spouts water for special occasions. More than 2500 LED lights illuminate the dragon bridge at night.

The Dragon Bridge was built to commemorate the 38th anniversary of the capture of Da Nang by North Vietnamese during the final days of the Vietnam War and is a wonder to behold.

I've been blogging since May 2010 and have enjoyed sharing my passion: the art and artists of vintage children's books, with you. The time has come to try and earn a bit of income from The Art of Children's Picture Books, as I can no longer justify the time without doing so.

My first affiliation is with ModCloth. I really like their fresh and modern take on vintage inspired clothing, shoes and accessories.. Recently some of their dresses have been on The Carrie Diaries, a spinoff of Sex and the City (which I loved!).

The Quitting Deal, Trina Schart Hyman

The last week has been eventful, well kind of. Last Sunday I cooked Easter dinner for 18. Monday I rested. Tuesday I quit smoking. Wednesday I got sick. Since then I've been sleeping and laying around, turning into a blob. I'm starting to get bored, which I'll take as a sign of getting better. And for once getting sick was a blessing, it helped with the first few difficult days of nicotine withdrawl.

In The Quitting Deal written by Tobi Tobias and illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman, mother and daughter both have habits to quit. They make a deal to quit together and to help each other.

Holy Cow! How many vintage children's books do you see with a mother smoking while nursing, not to mention with other children and pets?! This

book is from 1975, but even so...

Trina Schart Hyman was influenced by the Brandywine era of artists such as Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac. You can see this influence in her work, but she was also very contemporary and didn't shy away from illustrations that other's might not find acceptable.

Mother and daughter test several ideas: the holding hands cure, the talking cure, the candy cure, the comforting cure, the penny cure, the food cure and the next to last cure.

What I like about this book (besides the fact that Trina Schart Hyman illustrated it) is how the family lovingly supports each other. No blame, no guilt, no anger.

They understand for a person to truly quit an addiction, they need to do it on their own.

We don't get the requisite happy ending in this book either. Just a strong message of hope and support.

The Wonderful Wizard of OZ, Part Two

Here we are with part two of the first edition of The Wonderful Wizard of OZ. The resource for these images is The Library of Congress in the Digitized Print Materials from The Rare Book and Special Collections Room. Anyone can access this book and many others. The images are also available in high quality and can be printed out. That means you can print out a book in its entirety to read, use as a resource or even print out an illustration to frame. Nice!

W.W. Denslow's seahorse signature was famous. Incidentally, L. Frank Baum and Denslow had a disagreement over copyright issues, ending their work arrangement and Denslow did not illustrate any more of the Wizard of OZ books.

Today's vintage children's book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, is a national treasure. These illustrations from first edition were done by William Wallace Denslow (1856-1915) and published in 1900.

Today's vintage children's book, The Summer Noisy Book, is by the successful duo of Margaret Wise Brown and Leonard Weisgard. Brown and Weisgard collaborated on over 24 books together, putting their stamp on children's books that are still popular today.

Their first book together was The Noisy Book (1939), which started a series: The City Noisy Book, The Country Noisy Book, The Indoor Noisy Book, The Quite Noisy Book, The Seashore Noisy Book, The Summer Noisy Book and The Winter Noisy Book.

Love the dog in the back of the car!

I really like the way Weisgard illustrates birds.

Margaret Wise Brown (1910-1952) whose nickname was Brownie, was a prolific writer and wrote under the names of Golden MacDonald, Juniper Sage, Kaintuck Brown and Timothy Hay as well as her own. She is best known for

her books Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny.

Standard Poodles and Kerry Blue Terriers were Margaret's dogs of choice and were the central characters in some of her stories. She was rarely seen without one of her dogs.

Margaret Wise Brown had a flamboyant personality and accomplished much in a life that was cut short. One can only wonder what more she would have done if she hadn't died so young. In her will, Wise Brown specified that her ashes be scattered at sea near her beloved home in Maine. A simple stone marks the site with the inscription "Margaret Wise Brown, Writer of Songs and Nonsense."

There is a good biography of Margaret Wise Brown, that I encourage you to

read.

Leonard Weisgard, (1910-2000), illustrated over 200 books in his career. He illustrated his first book in 1937, called Suki The Siamese Pussy. An adaption of Cinderalla followed. Weisgard and Wise Brown's 1947 book, The Little Island, won a Caldecott for Weisgard. Margaret Wise penned this book under the name Golden MacDonald. I would also encourage you to go to the Leonard Weisgard

website, it is very good.

Also, there is also an article on Weisgard's site, written by Leonard Marcus who interviewed Weisgard about Margaret Wise Brown. Marcus is the author of Margaret Wise Brown: Awakened By The Moon.

A Pocketful of Cricket illustrated by Evaline Ness

Today's vintage children's book, A Pocketful of Cricket, is illustrated by Evaline Ness (1911-1986), one of my favorite female illustrators. A testament to Ness's skill as an illustrator, she was awarded Caldecott Honors three years in a row for All in the Morning Early (1963), A Pocketful of Cricket (1964) and Tom Tit Tot: An English Folktale (1965). She received another Caldecott Medal for Sam, Bangs and Moonshine in 1967.

"This boy, Jay, lived with his father and his mother in an old farmhouse in a hollow. He was six years old."

"All around his house Jay could see hills. He could see hills when he stood whittling in the kitchen doorway. He could see hills when he swung on the gate in front of his house. When he climbed into the apple tree beside his house, he could see hills."

"Woods covered most of the hills. Corn grew on some of them. On a far green hill, farther than Jay could see, cows ate grass in a pasture."

"...The clear water rippling against his ankles cooled his feet. It washed them clean of dust. Jay wiggled his toes in the smooth brown gravel on the bottom of the creek. A Pocketful of Cricket is not only well illustrated but well written - a great story to read to children. The author, Rebecca Caudill (1899-1985), penned more than 20 books for children including Tree of Freedom, a Newberry Honor winner. In her honor, the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers' Book Award, is awarded yearly.

So here it is finally, part three of The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast, Aldridge's Tour de force that earned him a Whitbread Award. He also created two more books; The Peacock Party and The Lion's Cavalcade which were sequels.

The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast was also turned into a concept album by Roger Glover and performed as a Rock Opera in 1974 and 1975. The cover art for the album was the illustration Aldridge did for the cover of this book.

There's so much to look at in Aldridge's illustrations that I don't even know where to start. You can see a resemblance to illustrations of old, yet they are totally modern. His pure unadulterated color, lavish illustrations, expertise and psychedelic style say it all. He really is the man with kaleidoscope eyes.

Florida Sea Birds

I'm back from sunny St. Petersburg, Florida. My family and I had a great time

and spent a lot of time near the ocean. I managed to get some nice pictures of a few types of sea birds there. Between the sun, wind and moving birds it wasn't easy, but it was fun.

The little sandpiper above was constantly moving, making it difficult to take a picture. They have a quick funny little walk and are constantly scurrying, searching for food. They are amusing in groups, but I wasn't able to get a picture of a group.

I think this is another type of sandpiper, larger than the first two photos, with a longer beak and legs.

I did a little research to find out what the names were of some of the birds. I believe this is a Tricolor Heron.

We went on a boat ride to a barrier reef island. There were tons of sea birds at the dock where we boarded our boat. Brown Pelicans like the ones above were all over the place.

This Brown Pelican had a bead on me.

I think the Great Egret bird is very striking with it's white feathers, black legs and feet and yellow bill.

From this view it looks a bit knock-kneed.

Amazing how they can perch on one leg and not fall over on a boat bobbing in the water!

I really enjoyed taking pictures of these birds, I hope you liked looking at them!

Taking A Vacation...

My family and I are taking a vacation. We're going to Florida where it's nice and warm, a welcome relief from the cold and snow we've had here. I'll be back in a little over a week with part three of the Butterfly Ball And The Grasshoppers Feast and hopefully with a bit of a tan :>)

Sometimes simple things are the best. Like scrambled eggs and butter toast,

a tomato sandwich or a cup of soup, simply designed illustrations can be just what is needed. But simple is a misnomer here. While the illustrations below may look simple, a lot of time, planning and expertise went into the final product.

Here we are with Part Two of The Butterfly Ball And The Grasshopper's Feast

by Alan Aldridge and William Plomer. Aldridge received the Whitbread Children's Book Award for this book in 1973. The Whitbread awards, started in 1971, are given to authors based in Great Britain or Ireland. (Since 2005 they have been called the Costa Book Awards, when Costa Coffee, a subsidary of Whitbread, took over the sponsorship.) These awards, given in five different categories, are for high literary merit but also for works that are enjoyable reading to the widest possible audience.

Alan Aldridge (1943 -) like William Roscoe also hails from England. He started his career working for The Sunday Times Magazine as an illustrator. Aldridge was hired by Penguin Books in 1965 as an art director after doing some freelance book covers for them. There he developed his style and created over 100 modern book covers that were in sync with the time.

In 1968 Aldridge started his own graphic design firm, INK. He became a graphic design star to iconic rock bands such as the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who and Elton John, designing many album covers that set the pace for graphic style in the 60's and 70's. He was referred to as the "Graphic Entertainer" and a contemporary Aubrey Beardsley. John Lennon called him "His Royal Master of Images." Aldridge nicknamed himself "The Man With Kaleidoscope Eyes" after a song by the Beatles. In 2008 his book of this title was published, to view it: Thames & Hudson

The Butterfly Ball And The Grasshopper's Feast, Part One

Today's vintage children's book, The Butterfly Ball And The Grasshopper's Feast, by Alan Aldridge and William Plommer, has some interesting history behind it. First of all, the book is based on a poem written by William Roscoe in 1807. The poem is about a highly anticipated party attended by insects and small animals.

But first, let's take a look at the original book. (Images are from The Project Gutenberg)

A short bio on Roscoe: William Roscoe (1753-1831) was born in Liverpool. A smart fellow, he left school at the tender age of 12, having learned all the schoolmaster could teach him. He then helped his father, a market gardener, studying and reading in his free time. This was a happy period in his life and gardening and agriculture were lifelong interests.

Roscoe studied law, became a lawyer, married and had 10 children. He was also a writer, well liked and an expert in the language and literature of Italy. To read more about Roscoe go to this link.

Here is a later version of The Butterflys' Ball, published around 1886. (All images are from the Ball State University Digital Media Repository.)

Aldridge and Plomer's spin on Roscoe's poem resulted in elaborate and highly detailed illustrations and a much expanded and lengthy poem. Here are some of the characters in the book.

Every time I see Robert Lawson's artwork I am struck by how excellent his

drawing skills were. In They Were Strong And Good, which is also written by

Lawson, he chronicles and illustrates the history of his parents and their parents. It is written in the narrative of himself as a young boy.

In the foreword Lawson writes about his forebears "None of them were great or famous, but they were strong and good."

Today's vintage children's book, Favorite Fairy Tales Told in Russia, features work by an artist that I am not familiar with.
