It's hard for me to believe it's been more than a year since I've posted on my blog. For those of you who follow me on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, you know I really HAVE been still at work on my art... I just seemed to have let the blog go as I was opening and running my new shop. So, if you haven't been following me elsewhere, here is my brief overview of the last year.

July 11, 2014: I opened "Studio262" as my working studio as well and a little boutique art supply store
Feb 13, 2015: I had the opportunity to expand the space, doubling the size, and making the gallery portion of the shop more gallery-like. This also gave me the opportunity to make the space available to local artists to consign their work permanently, and not just thru the holidays, and expand my art supply selection. Woot!
Today: After spending the past year learning the art supply business, the gallery business, the business of having employees and consignment artists, I feel like I'm FINALLY getting a bit of breathing room. I am looking forward to creating MORE art over the next year, and to adding a few more Art Festivals back into my schedule. Double Woot!

Thanks for your support thru all my adventures. I wouldn't be able to do any of this without it!

Studio262 becoming boutique art gallery and art supply store!

As many of you know, I've decided to take on a new opportunity in my art life - owning and running an art gallery & art supply/gift store! When The Drawing Board of Corvallis, Oregon decided to move on to other opportunities and re-focus on the business of graphic and web design instead of running a storefront, I decided I couldn't let local art supplies die out in my favorite little downtown. (Yes, partly because my STUDIO has been in the back of the storefront since November.) So, as with most things in my life, I'm just charging forward!

And don't worry - MY PAINTING LIFE is continuing as strong as ever, and hopefully will be even stronger as I take a year to focus on my art (and business) instead of running around to 15+ different festivals next year.

For my art show, "a little Wild at Heart", I had originally planned to be able to sell pieces of the 60 block trees I'm creating during the show as I finished them. Well, I'm taking longer than I expected (of course - that's the optimist in me), and have decided to go forward with a new, and hopefully more fun, way to share my work and raise money for Chintimini Wildlife Center (40% of all sales at the show will be donated to them).

I will be holding a SILENT AUCTION for each of the 60 blocks during my show closing celebration on March 27. Each original 6x6 inch block will start at only $20! (Regularly priced at $95 each.) I will take bids until 7:45pm, at which time the auction will close.

What if I can't be in Corvallis, OR for the event?

Before the event, I'll post an online auction guide which will showcase each of the pieces available. I will take your max bids prior to the event via email up until 5:30pm PDT on March 27 and then have a 3rd party place bids for you during the event. Bids will be in $5 increments starting at $20. I think there will definitely be a chance for some amazing deals!

A little art show in a little gallery for a local wildlife organization with a BIG heart

"A Little Wild at Heart" opens Friday, February 7, 6-8pm in the NEW gallery space in the front of my studio, aka The Drawing Board!

For the month of February and March, I will be showcasing my smaller paintings of wildlife themed art AS WELL AS CREATING a NEW series of little block art (100+ pieces BIG) during the show! Demonstrations will occur Tuesday thru Friday 11-2pm and Tuesday & Friday 4-6pm, with some weekend dates to be announced.

Charity EVENT!
Thanks to the request of my wildlife-loving daughter, the show will serve as a fundraiser for the Chintimini Wildlife Center. 40% of all sales during the show will be donated directly to Chintimini!

Join me in the event kick-off to get the show rolling, and again at the closing celebration for the grand finale of the 2 months of demonstration!

For all other sizes: I charge $1.25 USD per square inch ($150 minimum) for original Acrylic artwork on canvas - Although I retain the rights to all my work, I do also offer a 15% courtesy discount for paintings within my usual genre if you don't mind me making prints from the original painting (including 15% off the standard prices above). All my canvases are custom made, stretched by me, and can be any size you wish. Before I begin a project I do require a minimum non-refundable 25% deposit. It then takes about a week to have the canvas built, another week for me to prepare the canvas, and then 3-6 weeks to complete the painting (depending on the size). I provide progression photos of the work being done (I don't supply sketches, however, as I do my sketching with paint on the canvas), and am open to any feedback along the way. I don't consider a painting finished until you are completely satisfied with the finished piece. I finish all sides of my original acrylic paintings with an isolation coat of acrylic gel and then a varnish top coat. I also use high pigment paints - all of which will give you extra UV protection for your painting. I have the painting professionally packed and shipped via UPS, and do require payment in full before shipping.

What's NEW with the Art of Jennifer Lommers

It's been an exciting year, and as we near the completion of 2013, it gets even more so!

After a fun and busy summer of painting and traveling to shows, I happily opened a NEW studio space last week in downtown Corvallis, Oregon! I had my grand opening on Friday, and was overwhelmed with the welcoming I received from friends, family, and art followers!

THANK YOU!

As chance would have it, I was walking (well, actually biking, but I got off my bike) when I ran into the owner of Corvallis' little art supply store, Mike Wiener, on his walking commute to work. I was telling him I was in the market for some new studio space, and this time I was serious (not my usual just contemplation mode). Well, a few short days later and we had struck a deal - I would occupy his former classroom space as an "Artist in Residence" in the back of his store and could finally consolidate my printshop (formerly in my garage), my painting studio (formerly split between my house and my attic studio space at The Athena House), and a small retail area which I had only been able to present at art shows previously - WOW.

While Mike and I have been working out the details of what our 2 businesses and spaces will look like going forward, I have also been thinking of how I want to present this space to my followers and customers. While I have mentioned to many people before, that I don't really want to teach, per se, I do want people to come in and become engaged in the art making process. I realized that doesn't have to take the form of a typical art class (or at least what was typical for me back in the early 90's). So, going forward, I am going to offer a couple different art experiences in my new studio space.

1) Regular studio painting hours

I am committing to regular painting demonstration hours, where you can drop in, have a seat, and watch me paint!

2) Monthly Events

Starting in January, I will be holding a "first Thursday" event in my studio in the evening of the first Thursday of every month. These events will take a different form every month, and I plan on announcing these on my blog here. I hope to use these events to teach a particular skill or feature a particular product that I use in my artwork. For anyone participating (you could also just watch), there will be a small studio fee for the supplies, but the result will be a piece of artwork (either finished or in process) that you can take home! Once we get rolling, I also hope to offer these as videos for my cyber fans as well.

I think the sun and an exploding garden may be getting to me today as I get ready to paint another one of my little "Plein Air Garden" series paintings - and it's a good thing!

In an effort to spend more time in my back yard this summer, well, ENJOYING summer, I'm adding a new twist to my line of little paintings...

The Art of the Image Transfer

I have been using Image Transfers in my paintings more frequently of late. As such, I am often asked about this technique. While I have blogged about it in the past, I will try to be more comprehensive in my post today.

The Art of Image Transfer - a tutorial:

Step 1 - Choose / Create an Image

In this case, I have chosen a recent drawing of a sea anemone. I created the drawing in my sketchbook, photocopied it, and then cut out the portion I wanted to use for the image transfer. Any image can be used (newspaper clippings, photographs, etc.) and even the original drawing could be used if a photocopier is not available and I didn't wish to keep the original drawing. I prefer images with plenty of white areas since I like to add color to those areas during the application process. An inkjet print will not work (the ink will bleed), but a laser print will.

Step 2 - Tape Image Cut-out to Suitable Work Table

I have recently added the taping step as I found it easier to coat the images with gel if they weren't susceptible to moving during the process. Any tape will do. In this case I just looped regular clear tape to create the double-sticky surface. It is also wise to choose an appropriate table. I like using my plastic folding table (shown here), but I have also used formica countertops (much to my family's dismay) and coated metal pans (aka, my palette pan). I do not recommend plexiglass. I would think glass would work too, but I haven't tried it.

Step 3 - Coating Paper Image with Acrylic Soft Gel, Semi-Gloss

I coat my paper images with a thick application of gel using a paintbrush. I prefer my paintings to be textured, showing all those lovely ridges and bumps of the process. If you prefer a smoother surface for your work, you may want to either use a palette knife for gel application or several thin coats of gel using a paintbrush, waiting for each coat to dry before adding another layer. I have also unsuccessfully tried the gloss soft gel when I ran out of the semi-gloss. I may be missing some technique to using the gloss vs. the semi-gloss. If you find success with it, please share!

Step 4 - Removing Gel Coated Image from Surface

After the gel has COMPLETELY dried (you can use a hair dryer to speed it up), remove the gel coated image from your work surface. The gel should not have any cloudy (aka still wet) areas when being removed.

Step 5 - Trimming Image

While you certainly don't have to trim the image (and sometimes I don't), I usually prefer trimming off the excess gel. This can be done either before or after soaking off the paper. I prefer before (pictured here).

Step 6 - Soaking the Paper off the Image Transfer

After letting the image sit in a dish of water (a pie plate is my preferred dish) for at least 15 minutes (the longer the soak, the easier to remove the paper), remove the paper by rubbing it off the gel image. Try to remove as much as possible. Let it dry if you want to make sure all the paper has been removed. Spots of white will indicate paper is still attached.

Step 7 - Image Transfer Application to Artwork

This step can work in a variety of ways. I prefer to apply a thin layer of paint to the back of my image (the side where the paper was attached) with my color of choice and then paint some more of the gel to the desired location on my artwork. I then press the image (paint side down) onto the artwork and smooth out any extra paint/bubbles starting from the center and working my way out. I add another layer of gel over the top and along the edges to make sure it adheres well. It's easier is you are applying to a surface where you can easily press down (wood, paper), but if you are using stretched canvas, you will just need to reach around and apply pressure from the back while placing your image. Today I've chosen a round cradled birch board on which I've painted a coat of raw umber (dark brown) and then gold. You can also paint over the image (preferably after the gel has dried), but I would recommend an isolation coat (2:1 gloss gel and water, as recommended by Golden) and then possibly a top coat varnish to finish off the painting and ensure good adhesion of the paint to the gel image transfer.

I've then created a rubber stamp of a Hermit Crab and printed in over the drawing using Speedball water soluble printing ink. Finally, I touched up the drawing with highlights of Golden acrylic Iridescent Bright Gold paint. FUN!

Drawing a Day 2012 - Let's Begin!

I have been contemplating a new body of work based on my favorite childhood place - Fragaria. I grew up spending my summers playing in this magical place on the puget sound making mud pies, fishing for flounder and rock cod, and playing marbles with my brother and cousins. My grandparents owned a summer home here and since my father was a high school teacher and my mother stayed home with us kids, we had the freedom to spend many summer days and nights enjoying this beautiful place. I have fond memories of my grandfather frying fish in the kitchen, floating around the bay in the little aluminum boat, and playing with the big dog, Bonnie, who lived down the road. I loved Fragaria!

It is this magic of a happy childhood and the memories of an adult now living a busier life of responsibility and obligations that I wish to merge in larger paintings over this winter in my studio. And so I begin my journey down memory lane by honing some new skills with new subject matter - jellyfish, kelp, rock cod, boats, water, shells, barnacles, crabs... the list will only grow, I'm sure. I have started a journal of small drawings and will continue to capture shapes and details of the new imagery here.

And so, I thought it fitting I would also work on a few more detailed drawings and offer them online for my 5th annual eBay art auction.
