The Baptism

I kept driving as the roadside scenario blurred by.

In my peripheral view I spied a huge, dusty, black cowboy hat on a gray crowned fellow. His hair was like long wires and blended into a peppered, unkempt beard. It reminded me of steel wool. Most of his face was obstructed.

There were a few people crowded around his pulled over vehicle, at that point to help. This gent seemed oblivious to his surroundings, head bent down and texting. He was encompassed, but alone. This tiny drama, it got me thinking . . . about baptism.

So, the old guy stuck by the side of the road - that was me.

Before Christ, I was in the muck and the mire. Living stranded in all my sin and the darkness; I was continually in a sorry, distorted state. I was oblivious and desolate. Blackness and shame clouded my mind - like an oppressive hat burdening me down. My head covered with the world's entanglements, hid my face.

Christ reached out and rescued me. I was able to repent of my ways and change direction. Christ picked me off the side of the road of destruction. Placing me on the right path, he cleaned me up. A new, fresh face was revealed from under my old mask. HE did this.

Romans 5:6-8

For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

A believers' baptism is a symbol of washing away the old self by immersion in water. Raising up to embrace our new life in Christ. A rite of passage if you will. That was me too, after Christ.

Romans 6:4

We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

Christ continues to wash me clean, for my corruptible flesh tends to be foul.

Ephesians 4:22

. . to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,

My painting above, Vineyard View, was part of my Calistoga Roastery show that just ended. I did not sell anything, but was ok with that. Sometime, in the past three months, the collection of work was seen by a photographer and publisher out of St. Helena. His credentials are impeccable. He's worked for National Geographic among other things.

He contacted me for his upcoming calendar project. It will depict the wine country, using local artists work. My vineyard paintings will be considered for one of the calendar pages. I'm thinking this might be a type of baptism into the art world; a new rite of passage.

Whatever pans out, I feel privileged to be chosen,

The jury's in, I made it! My work will hang in the Napa Museum. This is big for me. A definite resume landmark.

To refresh some and fill in others; my previous blog, "Mini Me", explains all about my new painting, Mustard in Miniature. In short, a jury scrutinized, discussed, maybe even squinted at my work, projected on a big screen. I sent three images of my most recent paintings to the curator, answering a call to Bay Area artists, nearly a month ago.

Then there was the wait. Liking to be prepared, I needed to paint the miniature work, for the show Take a Chance on Miniatures, in case. I had just finished, posted it here, when I found out I was chosen. A few finishing brush strokes, fix and enhance . . . I'm ready.

Feeling so refreshed! There is something about being recognized and accepted into this show that brings new motivation and outlook. My mind and spirit is reinvigorated.

More info on the upcoming show to unfold. There will be an opening night. I can post details later. This show is a fundraiser for the Napa Museum.

It's not like art is my whole life, although it is an important part. I don't depend on art to make me joyful.

I can hit refresh everyday. Not the mechanical key/function on my computer - it's a spirit thing. By giving my life to Christ, wanting to know him more, therefore needing to please God more, I meditate on His word daily. Some days more than others, careful not to wait until I'm parched and starved.

Psalm 119:
My soul clings to the dust;
     give me life according to your word!
²⁶When I told of my ways, you answered me;
     teach me your statutes!
²⁷Make me understand the way of your precepts,
    and I will meditate on your wondrous works.

The Bible says we should worship and love God with all our mind and heart. A command for our own good, there is nothing more reviving, to drink from the living water.

John 4:13-14
Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

MINI ME

Me living life in the present = looking at everything through a close-up lens.

While adjusting this lens, my sights were set on a lovely flower, the earth slams into my eye. TOO close. Every little thing is magnified out of it's normal scope. The overwhelming, towering, hideous, crawling monster is only a potato bug. (Ugly yes, but I could maybe smash it.) In fact, high power magnification is not reality - down right dangerous when looking at my own more mature face, with it's crags.

My common, daily life struggles, concerns, selfish desires can turn into problems; translating to issues. Soon these are heavy burdens, given over to fears which causes despair, tying me down to the dirt.

The Bible instructs me:

Matthew 6:25 Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?

Living life for the eternal = ME becoming mini.

I can't forget why I'm here. After all, who am I created to be? The Gospel comes to mind. I've been redeemed from my earthly death, once enslaved by sin, and now saved for the purposes of God. For me, to live for the Kingdom of God is a outcome of love. My life is a vapor, my time here is minuscule compared to eternity. Heaven is my home.

Colossians 3:1-3

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ.

The painting above, Mustard in Miniature, is only 5x7, a cramped size to paint. This scene, where stretched shadows lay on orange dirt, pointing to the bright mustard, challenged me. Using my smallest brush yet, I managed to include some details, as the great outdoors shrunk to postcard dimensions. It helped to keep my mind's eye on the bigger picture. I painted this for a juried show I hope to get into, titled Take a Chance On Miniatures.

Pointing my life to the cross, helps my humble, diminutive, mini existence to fit into God's larger picture, image and plan.

Galatians 2:20

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

What's in a Title?

This painting is title-less. Will you please think with me?

Here, the coffee mug is the featured star. It's glamorous white luster is elevated by the seismic wave of colors surrounding it. (Since I'm obsessed with coffee it must be in the title.) The lavender metal bucket holding bright cherry JAM packets, is a worthy side kick.

Title: Jam'in Coffee (a pun could be fun)

Consider the overall feeling of nostalgia in this work:

Notice the imperfect wooden sills, the glass panes dotted with layers of old paint and the brazen morning light flooding onto the white formica diner table. (Cool daddy-o!)

Title: Cup of Joe (?)

It's also possible because there are so many cosmic colors used in this painting, not the usual complimentary bedfellows, it causes pigment anarchy. The paint chroma plays as it vibrates your retina and sings . . . a raucous tune.

Title: Rad Caffeine Rush (?)

Titles are potent. Because the artist might want to direct the viewer to a meaning, feeling, train of thought, using a minimum of words. Words are telling:

* I might have some bad words between friends.
* One could put in a good word.
* Word up. (Slang for speaking or writing in truth.)
* I like to keep my word.
* Right now, I can't find the right words.

There is ONE title that is so potent; truth in a word. Jesus is called the WORD in the Bible:

John 1

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

As a believer this WORD translates into love. My God became flesh and for an appointed time, He walked this earth. He was born to die. He died for my sins on the cross. Resurrected, He conquered sin and death. His atoning death gives the free gift of forgiveness for my sins and eternal life!

John 1:14

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

²³ For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6)

I continue to wrestle for just the right words for the above painting's title. NO matter. I'm secure in the ultimate Word to mankind; Jesus.

Color Celebration

Now that 2012 is settled in and the Holidays are a sugar coated memory of festivities, family, thoughtful giving, and feasting, I've got one question. How many Christmas presents did you return?

I'm planning to re-gift that sappy green Snugly blanket, thingy - as seen on TV. Also I returned a Christmas gift that was given to me from me. I will explain.

With this down economy, there was an epic amount of online sales. I traveled to every department store imaginable, quickly maneuvering in cyber space, buying gifts for my loved ones at killer prices. Behold, there was the perfect red dress, I must have, only one click away AND includes free shipping, guaranteed to be at my door Christmas Eve.

The dress arrived on time. It was made of cheap fabric, too baggy, an unattractive mini length. No great
loss, because I exchanged it for some stylish boots that were drastically marked down after Christmas. Now there is some girl math: "Look honey it did not cost me a thing - I just exchanged it!"

The above painting titled Color Celebration, is riddled with exchanges.

I painted this on location, right outside of Calistoga.The morning light was brilliant and casting sinew like shadows on the wintergreen grass. That is what attracted me to the spot at first, but overall the vineyard was unkempt and a bit dingy. I needed to exchange the dull, pedestrian vineyard scene, for an idealized reality. Somehow I decided to paint a joyous explosion of amped up colors . . . as if the vines were experiencing a solar flare! I also reconfigured the leaning trellis' to look more appealing. As the viewer, whatever your interpretation of Colorful Celebration, hope you enjoy the upgraded substitutes.

This painting is part of a collection of work reflecting my vision of quaint Calistoga and vicinity. Which I am shamelessly plugging now- you must see these works in person if at all possible! They look fantastic in their setting, dressed up in their frames. The Calistoga Roastery is hosting my collection through the end of February. No excuses locals! Plus their coffee, so good - worth the trip.

My final thoughts about gifts and exchanges. As a believer my sins and transgressions against a Holy God have been exchanged for Christ righteousness. This exchange is not equal, I did not deserve to be forgiven, its a free gift!

Romans 3:23-25

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.

I like the math here;

What I bring to God, the Creator of the Universe = 0
What Christ brings to me, salvation and eternal life = Infinite Grace

What an exchange: I receive a gift better than deserved and something I could never earn for myself, a true treasure!

Romans 5:15
But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many.

The Artist Statement

What is MY artist's statement? I know what it is not:

* Chronicles of my first big art reveal - some elaborate scribbles magnetized to the fridge. In fact, all other historical moments of my childhood as a budding talent . . . yawn.

* I could compare my work to great masters I admire, using esoteric lingo, on how I like to paint in the styles of Van Gough, Degas or Cezanne. Guess who would come out the winner in that comparison? Only the best painters that ever lived, not I.

This blog has been a safe forum to record my thoughts, ideas and stories about the art experience. If you have been a faithful reader, you might have noticed - I'm not a writer. I don't know the craft of editing; while still possessing a compelling need to express myself with words. As I write this, late into the night, the Calistoga Art Center is waiting for my info and pics for their e-blast regarding the upcoming show in December. It is a privilege to be one of the participants.

I must take a moment here to give God the Glory and praise for this opportunity: a great venue to sell my art in this rough economy.

Which reminds me, please take a good look (magnifier might be helpful) at Foggy Morning and Old Vines Dancing. If possible, one should come see these paintings as they are so impressive in person, in my humble opinion. Both are brand new works, painted on location in proximity to Calistoga.

Must move on now to writing. I found this definitive instruction below, under "How To Write An Artist Statement" that should help.

* Artists are artists, not writers, so think seriously about hiring a professional writer or editor, preferably one with an art background, to help you convey what you want your statement to convey in language that ordinary everyday people can understand.

Re-made in The Shade

Wanting my life to be Made In The Shade? I'm so over it. I've been there and back.

To have an easy time in life or finding things working smoothly to ones's benefit - why would anyone want that?!? Boring! (Insert your own sarcasm here.)

According to daily outcomes; it's apparent MY life is messy, imperfectly devised to bring humility, many a time picking myself up off the pavement. I have the skinned knees to prove it, metaphorically speaking.

My newest painting Shady Walk portrays an idealistic scene of a colorful overgrown walkway, speckled in a crocheted pattern of light. The violet shadows seemingly give some relief from the sun's harsh rays. I painted this from my photo, taken on a bright afternoon, that was fairly dull on it's own. Drawing on my artistic license, I was able to pump up the ambiance; a spectrum of technicolor that wasn't there. Which is, just like me.

I often paint my life with a prism reflecting a Pollyanna existence. Blindly optimistic; I can always spend money how I want, my teenage daughter thinks I still know things, my house is self cleaning, family relationships are blissfully perfect, OH and there is world peace. I might add I never: fail, sin big, say a hurtful word, consider temptations, think evil thoughts. Obviously an auto-biography that is delusional as well as fictional.

The true story is, I do have trials in this life. I should consider it all joy, because it is written by God, not my own picture perfect idealism. As a believer I trust God to show me HIS spiritual version of made in the shade, therefore lacking nothing.

James 1:2-4
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Romans 8:28.29
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, . . .

He's there protecting me.

Psalm 18:30
This God—his way is perfect; the word of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.

Even protects me from myself.

"By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything." (1 John 3:19, 20)

He knows my weaknesses and loves me still. My Heavenly Father picks me up and tends to all my fleshly scrapes.

The Bible says:

Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you. So we can confidently say,

"The Lord is my helper;
I will not fear;
what can man do to me?"

Hope you, the viewer, enjoy the play of light in the Shady Walk. I'm on my own sunny walkway, sometimes shadowed, I do stumble - all the while thankfully guided by my Savior.

That's a Good Idea

Genuinely good ideas are hard to come by. I have a ton of them - ideas that is.

Somewhat recently, I joined a vigorous dance/exercise class for beneficial health purposes. Good idea, right? Not so much when your back goes out for weeks, because this white girl never had to do the samba like that before!

My "good ideas at the time" are too long to list, but here's a short history;

* Owned a Pet Rock. Was it something clever or just a stupid rock? OK, I know rocks are usually FREE. Should not of spent the money.

* Planned my two year old a Birthday party inviting at least 10 of her peers. The Birthday girl had a complete meltdown, while all the guests acted their age. (Terrible twos.)

* My husband loved to ride road bikes. So I tried to ride one of his bikes, in which one's feet are in special shoes that LOCK into the pedals. Wound up falling over, feet still locked securely, while breaking the bike seat off and acquiring huge bruises. Don't ask.

Finding new painting topics takes a bit of strategy. Often the best plans and the artist's preconceived idea goes awry. Painting outdoors is contingent on the elements; too hot, direct sun, the light changes, no shade, rain, wind, NO facilities (aka the bathroom). Plein' air painting has it's challenges and rewards.

My new work The Palms, started on location, was born out of adversity. The morning was scorching hot. After setting up all my gear with no shade around, my mind was a sun beaten blank. So I picked a direction, and started sketching while sweating. I managed to get a good start on the canvas, took a picture of the scene, then completed the painting in my comfortable "studio".

Life and art, in my world, crossover. The Bible says:

Proverbs 19:21
Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand.

While my ideas are often weak - God's ways are purposeful, planned from the beginning to succeed and stand. I regularly need to refocus.

Proverbs 16:3

Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established.

Christ, who He is and what He's done for me, is the only IDEA I need to continually center on. God the Father had His plans for mankind established in Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:21
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Any of my own designs to reach God will always fail. In short: God's conception was for CHRIST to cover for MY sins so I'm reconciled to Him. Now that's a GOOD idea!

All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:

FIXED

I'm going vintage. I didn't mean old and outmoded. . . c'mon!

I prefer a more becoming mind-set of vintage: classic, characterized by excellence, maturity, enduring appeal, that sort of thing. So, I'm thinking more about my inner "man" revealing positive reflections. Not exactly my reflective image; which some days I wonder where that bad body double came from. (A bit rundown, pulled by gravity, including a crown of gray hair.)

I'm talking about abiding in the VINE. Not to be confused with the grape vines in my newest work.

My painting "VINE SHADOWS" depicts mature wine grapes, layered with depths of violet hues. The bunches are securely fixed on their vine. Strong shadows give a clue of the heated, arid and bright summer afternoon. Sitting in the dusty row, I could inhale the sweet fragrance of grapes warmed by the sun. This was a successful plein' air painting day!

What does abiding in the VINE look like for me? The Bible says:

John 15:5
"I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing." (Jesus talking.)

As a believer, I desire to bear "inner" fruit and to be know by certain characteristics. In order to be useful and appealing to God - I need to be a reflection of Christ.

Galatians 5:22
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,. . . "

Above, are just a few spiritual fruits I have worked to implement. FAIL! Key words to note are,"I" and "worked."
On my own strength, "goodness" and power I get mostly rotten produce. (I'd like to blame my bad body double!)

As I mature in my faith, it always comes back to HIM. I must daily remained fixed on the vine; feeding on the word of God, enduring trials by clinging to Christ, obeying His statutes. It's personal. With the life giving power of Christ, the vine, I'm able to grow quality fruit; only because of our relationship.

2 John 1:9
Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.

May God's grace keep me going . . . vintage.

Why Did I Want That?

Glad to be back in my right mind. I've been undone lately by letting my "wants" get the better of me.

For example, I had major car trouble this past week. My friend lent me his hyper waxed, sterile like interior, super sized Chevy truck. This was a generous act: knowing I'm a bit of a slob. All he asked was to get it back in the same EXACT condition. NO problem!?!

I was starting to covet. I could get used to driving this luxury, powerful, black beauty; it matched many of my outfits. Did I mention it was unquestioningly big?

Anyway, it took three days when reality hit. That reality; was a grating sound as I pulled into my driveway. Yep, it was not good - got too close to my parked car. There was rubber bumper scrapings transfered on the pristine paint job of the truck! I was lucky; the damage was superficial, no scratches. Thankfully we were able to polish, wash and shine that truck back to it's original luster - now forever returned.

My newest work Calistoga Cottage is also of a beauty. The cottage is something I could covet. The architectural white,whimsical arches are endearing. The casual front garden is a perfect place to contemplate life, read a good book, or drink a cup of tea in the dotted shade. I think you, the viewer, would agree this place has mega charm!

Presently, being in my right mind, I can freely enjoy the view; not longing for a drafty, old relic cottage of my own. The reality is I have been down this slippery slope of coveting stuff, the pure WANT of wrong desires and for situations to go MY way, before.

Instead of faith in Christ to supply my needs and trusting Him in ALL things - my heart grabs onto my ideas, turned into idols, trying to take God's place. Not good. WHY did I want that?

The Bible says:
Philippians 4:19
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

I turn from my selfish wants and remember God's everlasting ways are perfect. He is the only provision I need.

"And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. Little children, keep yourselves from idols." ( 1 John 5)

The Still Life

I'm attracted to the still life.

A still life is a work of art that is composed mostly of inanimate, commonplace objects, arranged in such a way to be pleasing to the eye. In fact before the 1700's still life paintings typically contained religious symbolism and allegories.

My newest work, SIT STILL, has one idea behind it. . . .

Wait, I could get deep here about this painting: the awkward plum sits alone, somewhat aloof; the spoon handle points away, snubbing the entire picture, while the flashy, gold-accented cup is so empty and dark on the inside. But I think that might be an Emo song I heard.

No, none of the above was in my original thinking - I just like the pretty cup! The design is fabulous, decorated in all my favorite colors. Another plus is that this tea cup. . . it's from England! Yep it has pedigree.

Lately, I've been thinking about how hard I strive to do and be a good servant of the Lord. I might have a melodramatic conversation - in my head - over the sin that tries to overwhelm my mind, then the accusations will start flying: "God could never approve of YOU, God could never use you; see the way you think? What a loser . . . NO wait!"

Scripture comes to my mind.

2 Corinthians 5:17 says;

"Therefore if anyone is in Christ he is a new creation. The old has passed away, behold, the new has come."

That's me - I'm in Christ! I still sin, yes, but I'm not a slave to it. THE OLD self has passed away. It's dead and gone because I am a new, useful, Christ - centered creation, only revived by God's amazing grace.

Galatians 2:20;

I breathe a sigh of relief because I know I can just sit still before God the Father. I want and can be a reflection of His son (What a pedigree!) and maybe with some golden shiny accented bits.

SUNLIT FACADE

I'm not.

I'm not packing for my vacation . . . . leaving in the a.m.. Although I have a list; in my head.

It's ok. What to bring camping is routine; warm clothes, shorts, bug spray, sunscreen, cast iron Dutch oven, camp coffee maker. OH, all the books, projects, sketch book, and other stuff you want to do, AND never get around to. Before I do all of this I had to show you, the viewer, my latest work.

Sunlit Facade is fun, even a bit funky. I'm glad it's a painting of an older building, that way the warping wood looks normal. I was asked to be a part of a Birthday art show. Calistoga is turning 125 years old.

This little street scene I captured on my digital camera late on a hot summer day. I don't usually paint architecture. I've procrastinated doing this topic most my life!

Hope to sell this to a Calistoga history enthusiast that might enjoy whimsy in a building.

I like to tie in my spiritual life with my art, at this point in the blog. Because of my packing, organizing, deadline I will be brief.

God provides for your needs. Sometimes we don't even know WHAT we need. But God loves us so much that:

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him." ( John 3:16, 17)

MELLOW EXPOSURE

I had to breathe life into my newest work. This small gem titled Mellow Yellow was almost too laid back.

What gives a painting life? There needs to be contrast ; light and dark, for one. I was struggling to bring out the light and volume in the amber colored vase. Color harmony and a focal point is also crucial ; the artist keeps these ideas forefront as part of the process. So much of what we paint is planned in "mental" space, way before the first stroke on the canvas.

This frills free still life , captures a certain glow of the mellow summer light piercing the glass vessel . It works, and has found a place on my living room wall, for now.

Recently Iv'e also struggled with spiritual "heart " issues. Can one show God their poker face as if He doesn't know what is "hidden" ?!?

1 Samuel 16:7
"..... For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart."

God needed to re-work me . Flooding light on my dark, sinful, idol ridden heart : I reacted in hate of what offends my God. HE exposed a strong contrast. Turning from those dark elements and able to receive forgiveness makes me forever grateful for what my Savior has done for me. For the Bible says that the wages of sin is death. It was as if I was trying to hide a dead, stinking, decomposing body, dragging it around......hard NOT to notice.

My confidence is now fully in Christ not my "flesh". Only He can cover sin , while transforming the human heart.

1 Peter 1:3
"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.."

God continues to change me and has breathed new life into this humble vessel, framed by His eternal love.

Romans 8:39
".....nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Field Day

A day of excitement or a circumstance of opportunity : defines the term Field Day .

My last blog I mentioned how a church member had gone to be with the Lord ; the glories beyond the skies. Claimed by a vicious cancer , she died too young.

Well here is the corresponding painting now titled FIELD DAY. I did emphasize the clouds implanted in the azure firmament as promised.

I was thinking how the day she departed , was one of pure excitement and joy for Deb.

"So we are always of good courage. We know thatwhile we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord." (2 Co.5)

She has a Glorious opportunity to worship God forever !

This work also represents a new opportunity for me . I have my first one "woman " show coming up , titled "Post- Impressionist Inclinations" . This painting displays Lake County's own beauty found in landscape.

I must give thanks to God for this artists dream. Who knows maybe my work will be the Lake co. art nouvelle. Or my show sells out because art buyers are having a field day ! No matter.... I am enjoying the prospects of the future , all with-in God's sovereign domain.

Future Skies

I plan to surprise.
I'm working on a landscape from my photo at right titled "Hay" Monet. Maybe because it's not my usual genre...... I think the results will surprise you. I'm intending to accent the transcendent spring cloud formations for extra sky effects .

This work , soon to be revealed , will enable the viewer to see the juxtaposition of my digital image translated into pigment on canvas. So at present, not much to chat concerning my painting. I do have more on my mind.

Yesterday a dear member of my church died. Deb was only in her late forties . Cancer ravaged her body but not her soul. We are sad because she will be missed by us and her immediate family....including a new grand baby who will never know this once vivacious woman.

She has reached her Future Skies. Deb fully trusted in Jesus Christ , her savior who has secured a place for her. Her life is now removed from this world but she's fully present in Heaven with the Lord. Now that's a juxtaposition !

Isaiah 32:17,18
"And the effect of righteousness will be peace,
and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever.
My people will abide in a peaceful habitation,
in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places."

One of my favorite writers, Charles Spurgeon, says so eloquently:
........." but your Lord has snatched the sting from death, and the victory from the grave. Do not, O burdened spirit, limit yourself to the confining miseries of the present hour, but let your eye gaze with fondness on the enjoyment of the past, and view with equal love the infinite blessings of eternity past, when you did not exist, but when God chose you for himself, and wrote your name in his book of life; and then let your glance flash forward to eternity future, to see the mercies which will be yours even here on earth, and the glories which are stored up for you beyond the skies."

The Free Rose

I had an empty vase.

"Not much of a painting topic".... I thought while driving to art class. As I entered the parking lot , I spied some free flowers ! Well...it was a remnant vine loaded up with vibrant scarlet roses. No one would notice if it was minus two blooms.

The Free Rose, to the right, is the resulting painting. The bold cobalt vase shows off the regal colored splendor of this queen of flowers. I also enjoy the shadows cast by the stem of leaves ; patterned on the table.

Thinking in free association, I remembered another rose. "The Rose of Sharon " is a title given to Christ in the Bible (Song of Solomon 2:1). Looking it up, I found : they were flowers of the field and grazing plains. "The Roses of Sharon were free: persons might have access to them, when they could not to other flowers that were in close and secret gardens."

As a believer this is significant to me. Christ the Rose of Sharon is free to all poor sinners that ,whoever will, can take the soul refreshing blessings that come through Him.

Because of Christ's love towards me ,when my soul is parched and all my energies spent on the trials of this life , HE refreshes. Christ alone is able to rejuvenate my mind, forgive my ongoing offences, lift my burdens . He renovates my stained heart with free access to God , keeping me for eternity.

I joyfully stay my eyes on this Glorious depiction of Christ , The Rose of Sharon.

"Come, everyone who thirsts,
   come to the waters;
and he who has no money,
   come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
   without money and without price."

Isaiah 55:1

Life in Christ ..... can be a bed of roses,

Label Me

I'm classified.

Ha. That isn't a country term for all classy and such! (classy-fied)

No......I have been arranged according to a system. But I digress. Look at my new painting , Label Me .....please.

The purposeful complimentary tertiary color splits (some technological stuff from the color wheel) in this painting, reminds me of fruit labels.

Iv'e always been drawn to the graphic, bright, colorful, asthetic nature of fruit logos...stuck onto a humble crate. A lifetime love of these trademarks, have put a certain inspiration into my work. I like the communication portrayed; look at these luscious, "grade A", comforting ,visually appealing apples, pears, oranges, etc;you need to buy them ,they will enhance your life !

Back to my personal classification. I have been previously destined, arranged, to accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. I love God. So you can label me as a believer ! This is purposeful.

Romans 8:28

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose..

Everyday I lean on Christ and He makes me more " appealing " by helping manifest life enhancing, joyful qualities......that changed my life.

".......fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience,kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control ".(the Bible).

My human nature struggles with every single one of these "fruits". I worry/panic about how to pay the bills. My heart deals with coveting, jealousy; and some days the list grows ! UGLY.

My identification as believer is only elevated because of Christ, not my own power .

His grace and mercy has labeled me for life and enables me to be.....
"filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God." (Philippians 1:11)

May I have more of the trademarks of Christ,

Counter Move

I didn't feel like painting today. So I went to art class.

Create a finished painting in one sitting ? Never. Just did ! Usually I'm long winded. Not now.

All day has been a day of making opposing moves. Counterintuitive to my "normal" abilities and thoughts. Somehow it's working for my art. Hope you the viewer can enjoy Wild Roses for it's flash of spontaneity , robust color, and luminous backdrop.

So as not to break the mood of being brief; I have one thought. I'm inadequate.
An example of God's counter move. I experience His grace and forgiveness in my life......and I did nothing to deserve it.

In my life before accepting Christ, I was opposed to God , a self centered law breaker .( Broke many of the 10 commandments ! ) Even if I had wanted to, I could of never justified my past actions and be "good" enough to please a completely holy, just God.

There is so much I want to say. But won't.....not all at once. From the Bible:

" He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls." (1Peter2:24-25)

Christ did it all. Counter to myself ; reconciled and forgiven by God !

ALL ARRANGED

If I could arrange it ; I'd have fresh flowers on my table as regularly as bread.

The subject matter of this new work " Magenta Arrangement" are really just some common petunias . I'd like to think this painting has elevated their look . These bright beauties were last years re-seeded volunteers and not my first choice.

I was going to paint these spectacular yellow roses also blooming in a large container on my front porch. I was waiting to cut them so the budding blooms , just the right size, would make a perfect subject matter for intended painting. The deer ( a pest in these parts) got to them before me ; chomping them all down to mere nubs.

Serendipity would have it , I was forced to use the inferior flower. Well , now I think they were a good "pick". I love the intensity of the magenta color , their sweet short stature in the bulbous vase .

So many times I have planned life my way. That's what I think ! Plans go awry....health, wealth (?),
how my children are "turning" out , not getting what I want or expected , or I take a wrong turn.

Then I'm reminded of who is truly in control of ALL things. God the creator, even cares about my puny life. He loves me enough to direct me for my good and best interests ! Going back to leaning on the WORD and not my own strength is what God wants..... it was always HIS arrangement for me.

Lead me in the path of your commandments,
   for I delight in it.
Incline my heart to your testimonies,
   and not to selfish gain!
Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things;
   and give me life in your ways.

Taking Liberties

The opposite painting is "green". I recycled it.

You could scroll down my blog and view " This Little Brown Jug". I had painted out a chunk of the original composition ......leaving much empty, boring space. SO I took some liberties . We have this freedom as painters. Taking out, putting in, and re-creating a painting until we like it.

Using a famous work by Cezanne " The Soup Tureen" , I was able to transfer elements I really loved about his painting and put it in my own. He did all the hard work; color and composition. I even incorporated one of my other paintings "Lemon Aid" as a back drop. Thus, the new title of my transformed painting; "Cezanne and Deutsch."

Taking liberties in art is expected. But at times I think I take liberties with God in my prayer life . This should not be an accepted pattern.

I will repent of certain behaviors, thoughts and sins one day and the very next day , there I am praying for the same sinful behavior! (These "days" can add up.) I ask myself.....have I really repented , am I trying to CHANGE my direction of sin? OR am I taking liberties with a forgiving God; knowing if I ask , HE forgives me in Christ ?!?! The Bible says in Romans 6;

"What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death ?........ just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. "

My goal is to take more of SELF out of the picture, and replace with elements of the CREATOR.

" When life gives you lemons , make lemon aid."
At the wrong time, this phrase sounds sickeningly saccharine.What if I don't want to make lemon aid?!?

The painting at right, is a quaint arrangement of lovely fresh lemons on a plate. One can appreciate the relationship of shapes, bright yellow hues along with soft lighting. I enjoyed working with the complimentary colors and deep shadows ......I enjoyed the painting process. It was a sweet escape.

There are situations in life that turn sour and leave a bitter taste. Maybe you just need to face reality and not sugar coat things. I struggle with reality...all the time. It really comes down to my faith in the Lord. Do I completely trust Him in all situations?

Whether it's finances, family and friend concerns , illness or impending death ; I have someone I can give my burden's and cares to, as a believer in Jesus Christ. This rest , peace with God is available to you too....all who will believe. Jesus says in the Bible;

"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Transparent

ONE of my favorite topics to paint are glass vases , jars , or bottles of any kind. It's always fresh and varied.

I have repeatedly used the same glass objects in my work. Each time there is a different result due to the circumstances. A bright window ,with the long afternoon shadows, catch the reflections and colors in a whole new way ; especially compared to a skylight's diffused cast glow .

It's all in the set up of the still life and the artist's vision. My visual vignettes are usually superficial in meaning ...... it catches the eye , good contrast , colorful, etc. .

In the past I was often accused, by my family and friends, of being shallow and superficial. I was !! It was a protection : a defense from people getting too close, from hurt or showing my true colors. My faith in God has transformed those fears into a desire to be transparent. The Bible says God knows what's in my heart ....... and HE still loves me. Because my sins are forgiven , Christ covers me , imputes His righteousness and transforms me.....daily.

" Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death."

Romans 8:1

Apple Blossoms

Consider the apple blossom.
A pink tinted cluster of smallish flowers appear on a pruned woody branch. Then the bees swarm , skipping , feet clumped with pollen to each flower. This is the beginning..... to a hard, edible , crisp APPLE. What a metamorphosis . What a creation.

I hope to re-start this art blog with change and transformation. The paintings will show my growth and changes made as an artist.

My words will reflect my thoughts and "heart". My faith is part of me as well ; always striving to humble myself before a mighty God. The ultimate creator....the only one that can "create" something out of nothing. As the artist, I only imitate.

The Need

I'm needy.
This blog has mostly been about ART, my paintings, and the creative process. Separate from a compulsive inner need to create art work ; I have a spiritual side.

Every artist has a motivation, a creative place they draw from: some type of muse. God is my muse ; He is my inspiration in all things. I believe He is the creator of the Universe. " In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."Genesis 1:1.

God is the only one that can create something out of nothing. Artists are just copyists.

God created all of us with a need for Him. A God spot , if you will. Ultimately we can only "fill" it with the things of God. So......I'm NEEDY.

" Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. " Matt. 5:6

The creator fills my impoverished state ; forgives my sins , secures a place in His family and a life in eternity. From this beggarly spot my life overflows with gratitude and His grace.

The aim of any creative gifts He has bestowed , would be to Glorify Him.

More paintings to come....inspired by the most faithful, all-knowing, loving, all-wise , just , creative , above all .....MY GOD .
