VFKT Q & A with Hunter Kennedy

This Saturday VANFOKKINGTASTIES assembles four of South Africa’s biggest names in Rock – Van Coke Kartel, Fokofpolisiekar, aKING and Die Heuwels Fantasties, all performing on one legendary lineup in promotion of their new acoustic album. We caught up with Hunter Kennedy for a quick Q &A…

The four bands have always seemed to share a certain camaraderie, was VANFOKKINGTASTIES the next natural progression or how did it come about?

Not really, it’s a great excuse for us to hang out but VanFokKingTasties doesn’t happen that often, mostly because it turns into a drinking competition. This album and supporting tour happened because Heuwels had booked studio time that wasn’t going to be used. It was the perfect opportunity to finally make this thing happen officially. The acoustic format is something the bands haven’t released before.

What are the dynamics like between the bands – is there any rivalry or do you just get on and each do your thing?

There is a friendly rivalry in a general sense. In one way it’s idiotic seriously competing in such a small market on the other hand it keeps everyone on their toes and I like to think that we push each other to constantly try and do better stuff. On stage this past tour some member-swopping has been taking place. I think if the tour went on for a few months you’d end up with one big band.

You were recently on tour for the launch of this album – how did you find the diversity of crowds and how were you received?

It’s been pretty well received everywhere we went actually. Besides for the stereotypical differences between people from different areas there’s not much for me to tell you. It’s always fun playing a home game though.

What was the recording process like for this album?

We had about 2 weeks and each band had a few days. The recording happened at Sunset Studios. That place is great. A little meadow at the foot of the Simonsberg. It was idyllic.

We’re looking forward to seeing all four bands on one lineup, will we be seeing four separate acts?

Essentially it’s 4 different acts. Depending on how everyone feels on the night, we might see some member reshuffling now and then. Mostly added vocals and extra guitaring.

What can fans expect to see at your show this Saturday?

VanFokKingTasties, of course! VCK will also be launching their new music video for “Tot Die Son Uitkom”, Heuwels will be airing our 10min. Short-format Music Video and we’ll also show a short doccie on the making of the album.

Video: Spoek Mathambo, Father Creeper

On March 13, Spoek Mathambo releases his album Father Creeper, the follow-up to Mshini Wam. Spoek embarks on a nation-wide tour of the US in March around the release of his debut album for Sub Pop Records. Take a look at Spoek Mathambo the artist, and the making of Father Creeper.

This follows the release in December, of Spoek's Nombolo One project, a collaboration with Theo Tuge and Ayanda Sithole in tribute to South African afro-pop, including the lead single "Melodi" featuring The Frown. Download the album for free here.

Interview with Die Tuindwergies

Die Tuindwergies make their way down to Cape Town and perform their debut concert at The Assembly this Saturday. We caught up with the boys from Pretoria.

Who are Die Tuindwergies?

Pieter de Jager is the vocalist and songwriter, and brother of Dawie de Jager, our bassist. Emile Swiegers is the lead guitarist, backup vocalist and songwriter, and brother of Jean Swiegers who is the drummer.

What are the dynamics like between you given that there are two sets of brothers in the band?

Quoting the Avett Brothers "Always remember there is nothing worth sharing like the love that made us share our name". We stand firm as a family.

How did you come up with the name “Die Tuindwergies”?

As soon as you see us for the first time the name will explain itself.

Describe your style of music in one sentence?

Melodic Country music with Afrikaans folk lyrics, played with passion.

Do you all share similar tastes musically? Who are your influences?

Recently it has come about that we do share similar tastes musically, but we grew up in different era's listening to a wide variety of music.

Our influences:
The Beatles – Songwriting
Dave Grohl – Rock 'n Roll
Red Hot Chili Peppers – Groove
Damien Rice – Passion
Brad Paisley – Melodies
Paulo Nutini – Casual feel

What musicians on the South African scene are getting it right at the moment? Who do you consider to be your friends in the industry?

To listen to Die Heuwels Fantasies, to see Van Coke Kartel perform and to learn from Freshly Ground. In our opinion they are doing it right. We consider the above some of our friends amongst others.

You released an EP in 2009 and your debut album 2010, when can we expect something new from Die Tuindwergies?

We have started work on the new album. Expect it some time in 2012.

This Saturday is your first gig at The Assembly. What can we expect to see?

We are very much looking forward to performing at the "legendary" Assembly. We find ourselves in the Western Cape often but never really get to jam Cape Town. You can expect a lot of new material mixed in with some Dwerg Golden Oldies from our first album. With a band like New Holland joining us, it’s bound to be a party!
