Oops....I'm a bit late with this but most of you would know about it already (and you should have received the newsletter I sent out about it if you're in the Sydney Etsy Team).

Etsy admin Matt Stinchcomb is in Sydney right now! Tomorrow afternoon (Saturday) there's a special 'Etsy meetup and chat with Matt' @ the western foyer of the Opera House (outside the playhouse theatre). It starts at 4pm and there'll be a chance to ask questions and share your etsy experiences.

Hope to see some of you there! I spotted Matt this evening, so can confirm that he does indeed exist, and is in the country right now! :)

Matt is heading to Melbourne on Sunday, but it appears that the Melbourne meetup is full.

Montage Collective in Fremantle

Hello! Helena reporting from Perth. If you are in town, check out Montage Collective in Fremantle. I popped in this week and had so much fun browsing around! I love the concept, and what a great initiative, supporting Handmade and local talent!

The pop up shop is a collaboration between 12 creative West Australian artists who have come together to set up a temporary shop for 3 weeks. You will find everything from jewellery, bags and homewares to textiles, art and paper goods plus a few vintage surprises in between!

My bestfriend Niina has some of her wonderful creations instore!

A trip to the shop is only fun when you come out with a cute purchase! Be sure to check my blog to see pictures of my purchase:)

The Queensland Flood Disaster

I'm sure everyone is aware of the terrible flood disaster in Queensland. Many Australian sellers on etsy are working together to try and raise funds to help those affected by the disaster, and there are lots of ways you can help- either by donating an item, buying some cool stuff with the proceeds being donated to the flood relief fund, or by helping to spread the word about these efforts.

The Australian Etsy DUST team has established a shop taking donations from sellers all over the world, with all funds (minus etsy and PayPal fees) to be donated to the Queensland Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal (over $2500 has been raised already). There are new goodies being added all the time, but you have to be quick before someone else snaps them up because things are selling quickly! You can visit the ausdisasterrelief shop on etsy here.

There are also other ways to donate- you can contribute directly to the Premier's Relief appeal here.

Also, the RSPCA has asked for help, as their Fairfield Shelter has been severely damaged (see below). Unfortunately the shelter can't receive disaster relief funds needed for human welfare, so they are relying on donations to rebuild the facility. If you would like to donate, please visit their website for details. All of the animals have had to go into temporary foster care because the housing and equipment has been destroyed.

Today I'm sharing a new search tool Etsy has just released - Local Items. Before this tool was released, a search for an item (today I'm using 'gold') could be refined only by items that shipped to your country. Now, there's a neat little 'Local Items' button - if you click this, your search will show you items only in your geographical region, based on your IP Address (like Melbourne, Australia).

For sellers: to set this up so your items will appear in the Local Items search, you need to follow these steps!

Sellers location in the Local Items search is based on the location of the red pin on the google map in their public profile.
Click here to visit your public profile, and if there's no little red pin, add one!
It'll take about 15 mins for the search to update, and then voila! Happy local buyers can find your goodies.

Hello! I'm Helena from Little Mo and Friends. I live in Perth, Western Australia and I like to draw! I'll be doing a few guest post every now and then on The Australian Etsy Blog. Breast Cancer Research

I was asked to pass this information on, and thought it would probably be of interest to some readers. The National Breast Cancer Foundation has recently launched Australia's first national online register for breast cancer research. The idea behind the register is to provide a way for anyone who is interested in contributing to breast cancer research to become involved in different kinds of studies.

The register is not for fundraising- it involves registering your basic information and you will then be contacted about any new research projects that you might like to participate in. According to the website, 'the choice to participate is entirely up to the individual and projects will vary from completing a simple questionnaire to something more involved such as joining an exercise study, providing a sample of blood, urine, saliva or breast tissue.'

'Researchers will publish the results of their projects on the website, giving the community full visibility to the research process and importantly, the outcomes. Register4 will be an important resource for breast cancer, providing information about risk factors, prevention, common myths and more.

Register4 provides the community with an opportunity to make a contribution to breast cancer research personally, rather than financially.'

The reason this register is so important is that it will facilitate breast cancer research by overcoming some of the difficulties associated with finding research participants.

Calling all Brisbane market fanatics! The BrisStyle Indie ECO Designers Market is on this coming Saturday 10 July 2010, from 9am to 2pm. The venue is St Augustines, Racecourse Road, Hamilton (Brisbane of course).

BrisStyle runs a regular market at this venue - the Indie Designers Market - featuring a range of Brisbane based artists and designers who sell on etsy. The ECO markets are a new addition, featuring sellers who have an Eco edge. That is, sellers who upcycle, recycle, reduce, reuse or are eco friendly in another way (although I can't think of any other ways at the moment).
