Oops....I'm a bit late with this but most of you would know about it already (and you should have received the newsletter I sent out about it if you're in the Sydney Etsy Team).

Etsy admin Matt Stinchcomb is in Sydney right now! Tomorrow afternoon (Saturday) there's a special 'Etsy meetup and chat with Matt' @ the western foyer of the Opera House (outside the playhouse theatre). It starts at 4pm and there'll be a chance to ask questions and share your etsy experiences.

Hope to see some of you there! I spotted Matt this evening, so can confirm that he does indeed exist, and is in the country right now! :)

Matt is heading to Melbourne on Sunday, but it appears that the Melbourne meetup is full.

Helena reporting from Perth. If you are in town, check out Montage Collective in Fremantle. I popped in this week and had so much fun browsing around! I love the concept, and what a great initiative, supporting Handmade and local talent!

The pop up shop is a collaboration between 12 creative West Australian artists who have come together to set up a temporary shop for 3 weeks. You will find everything from jewellery, bags and homewares to textiles, art and paper goods plus a few vintage surprises in between!

My bestfriend Niina has some of her wonderful creations instore!

A trip to the shop is only fun when you come out with a cute purchase! Three-quarters of the state is affected, including my home town of Brisbane. For international peeps, this is the size of France and Germany combined. Thousands of families have lost their homes, their businesses and all their possessions, and to date the death-toll stands at 16.

The initial rush of dontations to the flood appeal are starting to dry up (excuse the pun) so to do my part, I am going to donate 20% of all sales in January and February (my birthday month) to the flood appeal. I have also spent a day at an affected friend's house ripping down walls and cleaning up toxic mud (what a workout - I couldn't move for three days afterwards!). I'd like to use my craft to help other people as well.

Please help, by your purchases, I can donate to the flood appeal. Many Australian sellers on etsy are working together to try and raise funds to help those affected by the disaster, and there are lots of ways you can help- either by donating an item, buying some cool stuff with the proceeds being donated to the flood relief fund, or by helping to spread the word about these efforts.

The Australian Etsy DUST team has established a shop taking donations from sellers all over the world, with all funds (minus etsy and PayPal fees) to be donated to the Queensland Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal (over $2500 has been raised already). There are new goodies being added all the time, but you have to be quick before someone else snaps them up because things are selling quickly! You can visit the ausdisasterrelief shop on etsy here.

Some of my favourites from the shop:
Swoon Bracelet by SavageKitten

Alien Nation Coinpurse by MsPIGGii

Visual Journal Slip Cover by iheartcharlie

The Queensland BrisStyle team has also launched a Handmade Ark Flood Appeal, where participating members are donating proceeds from their sales. Unfortunately the shelter can't receive disaster relief funds needed for human welfare, so they are relying on donations to rebuild the facility. If you would like to donate, please visit their website for details. All of the animals have had to go into temporary foster care because the housing and equipment has been destroyed.

<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; Before this tool was released, a search for an item (today I'm using 'gold') could be refined only by items that shipped to your country. Now, there's a neat little 'Local Items' button - if you click this, your search will show you items only in your geographical region, based on your IP Address (like Melbourne, Australia).

Round Circle Disc Necklace by littleobywolfbrother

For sellers: to set this up so your items will appear in the Local Items search, you need to follow these steps!

Sellers location in the Local Items search is based on the location of the red pin on the google map in their public profile.
Click here to visit your public profile, and if there's no little red pin, add one!
It'll take about 15 mins for the search to update, and then voila! The National Breast Cancer Foundation has recently launched Australia's first national online register for breast cancer research. The idea behind the register is to provide a way for anyone who is interested in contributing to breast cancer research to become involved in different kinds of studies.

The register is not for fundraising- it involves registering your basic information and you will then be contacted about any new research projects that you might like to participate in. According to the website, 'the choice to participate is entirely up to the individual and projects will vary from completing a simple questionnaire to something more involved such as joining an exercise study, providing a sample of blood, urine, saliva or breast tissue.'

'Researchers will publish the results of their projects on the website, giving the community full visibility to the research process and importantly, the outcomes. Register4 will be an important resource for breast cancer, providing information about risk factors, prevention, common myths and more.

Register4 provides the community with an opportunity to make a contribution to breast cancer research personally, rather than financially.'

The reason this register is so important is that it will facilitate breast cancer research by overcoming some of the difficulties associated with finding research participants.

If you'd like more information or if you're interested in signing up, you can visit http://www.register4.org.au/ The location was the sunny Gold Coast in south east Queensland, Australia.

Attendees came via planes, trains and... combi vans. One attendee, Tasha Chawner, came from Walcha in regional New South Wales, a drive of around nine hours! This was not the first time some of the team have gotten together, in fact, some have developed real-world friendships (yes, I'm looking at you Ali and Emma!).

The glowing Emma of feliciafairy was the chief organiser of the conference and she did a wonderful job. The conference kicked off with cocktails and canapes in the beachfront Chateau Beachside, home of the famous buffet breakfast (which was also enjoyed by many the day after those cocktails!) and right on the beachfront in famous Surfers Paradise.

The one day conference, also held at Chateau Beachside boasted a fabulous view of the perfect surf and an inspiring business seminar by Trish Goodfield of Trish Alan Designs. Trish talked to attendees about how to make more money from our crafts by teaching others. Trish has made a name for herself in this field and really got us thinking. Trish has even written a book on the topic which will be released soon.

Morning and afternoon workshops rounded out the conference, with pearl knotting with the fabulous Andrea of andyjusty, and freeform crochet with Meg of artnomadix in the morning, and more crocheting in the afternoon alongside zentangling with Melanie and Jade of wiccked and scherre.

Photo: the lovely Emma of FeliciaFairy and Andrea of AndyJusty during the pearl knotting workshop

It didn't feel like we were mostly all meeting for the first time - it felt more like a getting together of old friends. (Melanie of Wiccked)

After a full day of crafty practice and discussion, participants were ready and rearing to go for the concluding conference dinner event. Unfortunately, I failed to double check the time and instead of being 20 minutes late, I was 1 hour and 20 minutes late (FAIL) and so, missed the festivities. However, I was assured everyone had a wonderful time.

Next year's conference is on the books, with locations such as Walcha or Adelaide being tossed about. We shall certainly keep you informed of our planning progress!

Search for dust team on etsy for work by the fabulously talented Down Under Street Team.

Article reported by Angelene of Jewellery by Angelene.

$50 of Free Google Adwords Credit!

Amusing Alpaca Fine Art Photography Print by caseymcardle

I thought this might be of interest to some readers- if you haven't used google adwords before you can sign up for $50 of free advertising here! He has a few crafty tendencies and creates excellent carvings, but I believe that the urge to create and the irresistible allure of "the stash" baffles him most of the time. Despite not comprehending my craft-obsession, he is exceptionally supportive. Whether its building storage, setting up markets, or (horror of horrors) cruising bead and gem shows, when I need him, he is there for me. Not as in, he or she is crafty, but that he or she supports you in your craft?

My fiance Josh is a carpenter, and a very clever one at that, but who at times, hates my craft, because I want to hammer during dinner and spent hours on the internet scouring for supplies and selling my designs. Yet, he is supportive. He made me a lovely desk at which I can craft, drives me to markets and helps me set up my marquee with his go-go-gadget long arms (I'm very short and can't for the life of me reach the top of my marquee!).

I spent today at the BrisStyle Indie Designers Market, next to the lovely Alison of AliPink and her husband Matt. Matt was the muscles for Alison's stall, held the fort while she went to the loo, but generally was just there to support her. It made me think about how many partners there are that support their crafty other halves in a range of ways.

So, do you have a supporting crafty partner? How do they support you? I'd love to hear your stories. Please email me at ange.mcm [at] bigpond.com and I'll write another post dedicated to supporting crafty partners.

Posted by Angelene

connect with me on facebook

Pretty Things

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; for the next couple of days only, so thought I'd better share the discount offer (even though I'm a bit jealous because I've already bought it)!

The normal retail price is $39, so this discount offer brings it down to just $14.95

It's a detailed and clear workbook/guide on how to make your blog more successful at your own pace, and I highly recommend it- I'm planning to work through it thoroughly to pick up some tips for improving my own blog as well.

The e-book is 31 Days to Build a Better Blog and it's written by an extremely successful blogger.

To get the discount, enter the code chrisjuly25 during checkout. Get more info and purchase here. The BrisStyle Indie ECO Designers Market is on this coming Saturday 10 July 2010, from 9am to 2pm. The venue is St Augustines, Racecourse Road, Hamilton (Brisbane of course).

BrisStyle runs a regular market at this venue - the Indie Designers Market - featuring a range of Brisbane based artists and designers who sell on etsy. The ECO markets are a new addition, featuring sellers who have an Eco edge. That is, sellers who upcycle, recycle, reduce, reuse or are eco friendly in another way (although I can't think of any other ways at the moment).

So, support your local community and designers and shop ethically at Brisbane's HOTtest destination for everything handmade with an Eco edge.

Bike organic cotton women's tshirt by UnCielo

Frida vintage ICON ring by ruby2gogo

Napery Pochette Green Apple Ice Tea by wheresbeckybean

xx Ange.

Giant Giveaway!!
