Crime Does Pay in Indiana Car Auction

Who said crime doesn't pay.??

Well in Shelbyville, Indiana, that is exactly what is happening this weekend.

It turns out that a convicted drug dealer who died in prison last year had some 28 classic vehicles hidden away in an Indianapolis warehouse.

Profits from dealing in marijuana had likely funded the purchases of these pretty cool autos. We are talking here about collector pieces; like a red 1963 Ford Thunderbird convertible finished with a white leather interior.. that's gota be more than 35 Grand.!!

But here is the irony - a large part of the proceeds from the sale by auction this weekend will be going to pay the deputy prosecutors in the Narcotics division of the Marion County Prosecutor's Office.!!!

Bet he didn't see that coming....

Poor Guy Loses More Than $6,500.00 Trying To Buy A Used Car On-Line...

What happened..??

Basically, scam artists used a legitimate on-line car sales site to post a "To Good To Be True" offer.

They were offering a 2004 Acura for about $6,500.

It was to be shipped from Laredo, Texas to the successful bidder...
Needless to say, after the money was sent overseas to the "seller" the Acura never arrived..

The internet is great for finding data about where Used Car Auctions are being held.
A car is a big investment and to buy one in the same manner you would a book, or a fishing rod, is open to all sorts of risk.. as this poor guy found out.

There are so many auto auctions going on all over the country and there will usually be a number being held within a few miles of most reasonable sized towns.

Use the power of the internet to get yourself a subscription to one of the trusted and well known providers of Auto Auction Listings.
Have a look through the recent sales data for the model you want to buy.
Look through the auction lists for your area for the same models.
Then check the cars out at the pre-auction inspection times.
At least you can then touch and feel what you are going to spend a few thousand dollars on..!

Even call them up and ask about the procedure if you aren't sure. They often have folks ask the same thing and their job is to help you..

Dealers Pain... Your Gain..!!

Used car dealers are finding business extremely challenging.
With the economic news getting worse over the past few weeks, there have been a number of dealerships closing in most states.
“It’s a tight market,” one dealer said.

Used car dealers, as well as some of the new car dealerships, are facing a slowdown as the nation adjusts to the constraints of a recession.

Auto dealers aren’t immune to the rippling effect of Wall Street losses, the threat of layoffs and a housing market that remains staggered.

“We could be in for a tough winter,” one long time car dealer reported.

“Hopefully spring will turn things around,” he added for good measure.

Another dealer said the trouble really started a few weeks ago when the mortgage banking crisis took center stage.

“That’s when it hit the fan.”

Some dealers are also noticing that the buyers now have less money to spend and are less than realistic about their options.

Maybe somebody should tell these buyers about the great deals on offer at the car auctions taking place all over this country every day..!

Just think about this for a moment: - You may have recently inspected a car at a dealer's lot just a few months ago that was outside your price range.

If that dealer is one of the many being forced to close, that same car could be going to auction at a large discount to the dealer’s price.

This means it could be well within your budget now.!

Also, consider what happens to the dealer's stock?
The cars need to be sold pretty quickly to avoid losing any more money.
No one will thank the liquidator for spending money storing them in the hope the prices bounce back..!

The dealers that survive and thrive, will be those that avoid expensive high cost financing to keep autos on the showroom floors.
Those tend to be the ones that buy at auction and pay in full.
Now they wouldn't be doing that if they couldn't get a bargain would they.?

One such dealer reckons that: "As for dealerships going out of business, some of them have themselves to blame."

Cars Repossessed in Record Numbers..!

Financed Cars are being repossessed in record numbers due to loan defaults, especially in America as indicated by figures recently revealed by the Finance & Loan industry.

To quote NPR's website (National Public Radio), "Auto loan delinquency in the United States hit a 17-year high in the fourth quarter of 2007, according to the American Bankers Association. About 3 percent of car loans were overdue by more than a month.

Some industry analysts estimate almost a quarter of those who financed their car purchase are 'upside down' in their Auto loans. Basically that is saying that their car is worth less than the loan balance.

But why is this happening.? The popular belief is that quite a few people are purchasing more expensive and higher featured autos. This is something younger buyers are doing which means they often just have the minimum deposit. This exposes them to long term high interest loans. Add higher running costs and we get a volatile situation where repayments on the loan fast become unaffordable and quickly get out of hand.

Income growth has been reasonably flat over the past 10 years with most costs rising. Dealers are encouraged to get as many new cars off the lots as possible, as well as add on extras that inflate the final purchase price but keep payments at the initial level by extending the loan term.

A comment on the "Wired Blog Network" said: "it's clear that Americans have been buying more car than they can afford. And as with the housing bust, many people have been victims of predatory lending." Another factor is that real wage growth in America has been stagnant for nearly a decade while the price of automobiles continues to climb, especially in the ways that you can add many thousands of dollars in options to your typical ride. The lending arms of car manufacturers are struggling to get people into new cars by extending the terms of the loan. The average today is nearly 64 months."

Car manufacturers have been happily promoting these practices and now it looks like it's coming back to bite them in a marked slow down of new car sales.. .!

The Finance houses are becoming desperate to get some of their money back and get rid of all these Autos coming back from the repo agents. This means more stock at the auctions and even more auctions to try and clear the vast amount of vehicles.. If this doesn't seem like a golden opportunity for someone who needs to buy a car to grab a great deal, then I don't know what does..!!

It is tough on those who got themselves "sold into" something that really was outside their means in the first place, but the people who work at the finance and auction houses have jobs too; they need people to be buying these reposessed Autos... so why shouldn't it be you..???

Can Car Auction Buyers Gain From Credit Squeeze..?

The current sub-prime mortgage and credit issues are all we seem to be hearing about, almost on a daily basis. But it may have a definite impact on the Car Auctions industry in the not too distant future, if not already.

The impact could be felt in two different ways, and it's not clear whether or not they will balance each other out. One thing is certain though, and that is that there will be some great buying opportunities for those able to take advantage of them!

The first thing to think about is that the availability of finance and credit has tightened up a lot recently. This means that for those folks who were intending to get bank finance, to fund their next car purchase from the car auctions, they may find that they no longer qualify. This in turn could mean less bidders and therefore less competition for you at the Car Auctions.

The flip side is that for those people who financed a Car with organizations that were happily handing out loans to almost anybody. These people may find their loans being recalled (depending on the original terms and conditions of their loans) as the loan providers get into difficulty themselves.

The thing is, we could have the situation arise where there are more vehicles being offered for sale by auction and less people bidding, due to their inability to secure the needed finance.

We may even begin to notice a lowering of the quality of the cars being offered for sale at some of the auctions. It is really important that you don't just rush out and buy at the first car auction you attend. State Auto Auctions - Will It Matter Which State You’re In …?

The short answer is YES .! It certainly can matter which state you are in..
The standard of auctions can vary from state to state and the services offered can vary a lot as well. Some provide great customer service, even making vehicle inspection services available.

Now that is a real plus if you are stuck in the office or the boss has just sent you inter-state for a few days or more and you need to buy a car. Perhaps the reason you’re choosing to look at auto auctions is because your current vehicle has died and is beyond resurrecting.?? If the people at the auction can provide you with inspection results it can be a service that saves a trip..

Another factor affected by which state you live in is that some of the car auctions will run a “mock bidding” auto auction so that new bidders can experience the auction process and feel more comfortable once the live car auction begins. This is a great way to get some State Auto Auction experience just by attending these sessions.

Learning how to buy at an auction can earn you some great deals. With bidding often starting from around the $100 mark it has been known for some folks to drive off in an auto for just pennies on the dollar - even up to 90% off the market price in some extreme cases..!!

Vehicles such as Sedans, SUV’s, Trucks, Vans, that are ex-government are usually in good condition and well groomed and they have normally been serviced on a regular basis too. This then displays for you the make, model, type, year of manufacture, mileage, price it sold for and ID number. Now this is really important research to guide you on what to expect your car will sell for at the Auto Auction. Armed with this information, you will soon know when the bidding has gone too high..!! Don't forget, know your limit and be prepared to walk away if it is exceeded. There will be another Auction within the week.

Federal Auto Auction - What You Must Know . . . ! !

There are important things you must know before buying at a Federal Auto Auction..

Like thousands of other people who have bought used vehicles at auto auctions, it can be easy and rewarding but only if you know what you’re doing..!!

Firstly, a bit of background. There is a Federal Agency (GSA) that has the main responsibility for purchasing fleets of vehicles. These cars are then leased to other agencies to meet their transport requirements. At the end of the lease period, the GSA collects these Autos so that they can be offered for sale at a Federal Auto Auction. The sale proceeds received then goes towards the purchase of the next fleets.

These cars being sold at the auto auctions have been cleaned and detailed for the purchaser to drive away in. It is not uncommon for these cars to be less than 3 years old. Most times they have been used for normal administrative duties (eg) for home visits by government staff, and as administrative pool cars, etc.

The key things about these vehicles is that they usually have been well maintained, they usually have low mileage, power steering, power windows, radio with tape, or CD, players, and are mostly popular makes and models. There are no buyers fees either, with prices being at wholesale.

However, they are sold on an As Is Basis. This means that it is up to you to carry out a thorough inspection of the Auto before you make any bids. Starting the Auto and inspecting it is normally allowed, but you can not drive it as part of your inspection. Get a copy of the terms and conditions from the Federal Auto Auction organizers before hand as well. This can help avoid any unnecessary surprises later on.

The Federal auto auctions mainly cater to auto dealers, but are usually happy to assist the public who maybe interested in purchasing. Make contact early and ask about the bidding process if you are new to it. You will also need to register for the sale before the Auction starts, so plan to arrive early.

Payment is typically made using credit card, debit card, cashiers check, or money order but it is best to confirm what the payment details and terms are before the Federal Auto Auction starts..

YES, there are some catches to buying seized vehicles at car auctions..

YES, you can buy a seized car for a large discount off market price.

YES, they do take place in all states.

YES, bidding often does start at $100.00

NO, you possibly will not buy a Ferrari for $500.00

NO, you probably won’t buy a decent car for $100.00

Online Seized Car Auctions can indeed be the best place to start looking for a great Auto at a knocked down price. Commonsense will tell you that if it was the holy grail of Car Buying then all the dealers would be out of business by now, right.??

Some folks do not like putting themselves out there and haggling and bargaining. They would rather be told a price then decide if they are willing to pay it else they go to the shop next door to compare.

Other folks like to know that what they buy will have full warranty and protection using every consumer law known to mankind.

You also get the case in smaller communities where the local dealer also goes to the same church as you and maybe is part of your foursome at the golf course. So buying from anyone else is almost a sin..!!

Once you’ve got your lists and found a seized car auction close to home, the next step is to mark off a couple of autos which appeal to you. Get to know how much they are being sold for now by dealers and private sellers alike. Use the classifieds and drive around the dealers to get a feel for the average prices. You will be surprised how fast you pick it up. Go have a look at what those same types of vehicles have sold for at previous car auctions using the links in the Research Toolkit part of our site. This will give you a guide to what price you may have to go to, to secure your dream car.

As you can see, there are some catches. But, with a bit of commonsense, some action, and some effort on your part, you can easily be driving off in a steal of a seized car..!! Don’t delay! Your dream vehicle is waiting for you…

Goverment Auto Auctions - How to Avoid Costly Mistakes . ! !

There are certain things you must do to ensure you win at Goverment Auto Auctions and avoid costly mistakes..

1). Mindset
Your mindset has a lot to do with achieving either success or failure when buying a car. Successful car buyers have the attitude: “I can win at this game. I can learn enough about the cars that are available, educate myself about the workings of the auto auction business, understand how the financing works, and take control of the process so that I can save myself money.”

2). Differentiate Between Your Needs & Wants
This one trips up a lot of people. It is so important to identify your needs first, then look at your wants. For instance; Station wagon or Minivan, 4 Doors, Automatic, Air Conditioning, Child Safety
Seats are all examples of NEEDS. Whereas Spoilers, Sun Roof, Multi Disc CD Player, Sports Wheels are all just WANTS.!

Do up a list of what you absolutely must have (NEEDS) in a vehicle from a government auction and that will become your reference point. This will be the minimum you will settle for. Add the wants to a wish list and if you get any of those in the autos you bid on, then that is a bonus.

3). Do Your Research Before Hand
Unless you are already in the Auto business, it will be ego or some macho drive that will prevent you from seeking information and advice. If you don’t know what the street value of a vehicle is, how can you possibly know when the bidding has gone too high.? Ok, so you will have a budget; but the whole idea of attending Government Auto Auctions is to get a bargain and save money - not blow the whole budget..!! Be nice to drive away with money left over, right.??

4). Get The Financing Sorted Out
Before you get there, and not just half an hour before, know how you are going to finance the purchase. Check with the government auction organizers which options are available. If you do need to finance it get that in place well before hand. Some auctions allow you to pay with credit card, cashiers check, or debit card. Make sure your funds are all squared away first.

5). Insurance
Not everyone drives as safely as you do. So try and organize temporary insurance cover before the vehicle auctions. Check with your insurance company as they may provide this facility and as you are already a client it can be easier to arrange.
These are all commonsense points for someone who is used to buying at auction. But for most people it is a whole new experience. These points are all equally important.

Cheap Local Car Auctions - Do You Know These Tips & Tricks.??

Just like many things in life, knowing a few tips and tricks can make all the difference. With Cheap Local Car Auctions, it can make all the difference between success and buying a problem..

The first thing you need, is an accurate list of all available auctions in your area. Why.?? Because often a particular make and model may not be available at just one Car Auction. But, being able to view weeks worth of upcoming auctions means you can hold out for exactly the Make and Model you want. Information, Information, Information… but it needs to be reliable AND from a credible source..!!

The next thing for a happy Auction experience is to do some research on your chosen models. I know it sounds like hard work but in reality all you have to do is just notice the prices as you drive past the lots as you do most times going places. A glance through the paper when the ads are on TV works well too.

Now you know what the dealer asks it gives you an idea of what you Do Not Want To Pay..!! Take a percentage off this figure and write down the result. That is your reminder of your limit at the Auction. Keep it private and be prepared to walk away..

Ok, you have the lists, selected your models, know the dealer prices, and have your own maximum bid price stored away. Here is where you may have to get a little dirty and maybe even call a friend..!!

With the information you got with your lists will be start times for the Local Car Auctions and time and dates when inspections are permitted. Most times you are not allowed to take the automobile for a drive, but you can start it up and have a good look around - this could be the dirty part so take some coveralls or a change of clothes.. It may be that you would feel more confident if a friend or mechanic checked it out for you. Sometimes the auction places have this facility available for a small fee. Obviously get a short list of the Automobiles you actually are serious about. You don’t want to go checking all the cars on the lot… unless you want to start a business doing that.??

Pre-arrange your finance before hand and sometimes the Local Car Auctions will have someone there who provides finance. You normally have to be approved before the Auction starts though.

The last tip is to get there early; check out the competition as they arrive and see how much interest is being shown in the models you are interested in. If it is a low turnout day you could be driving away in a dream bargain of an auto..

Getting a vehicle by Auction Car Sale is becoming more and more accepted as the internet spreads it reach across the globe, and more people discover this medium. The old “Caveat Emptor” (Let the Buyer Beware) adage applies equally to the internet as it does in the off-Line world. In short, with a little bit of common sense, there are real bargains to be had using the internet to source Auction Car Sales and to actually purchase a Car via an On-Line Auction.

In most developed countries, Government Enforcement agencies, and Financial Institutions are constantly taking possession of vehicles and other goods.

They don't really want to, as it's certainly not part of their core business. Government and Enforcement agencies are empowered to confiscate proceeds from criminal activities; often these can be late model and prestige Cars.

Financial Institutions repossess vehicles when those that bought them on credit, can no longer afford to meet the repayments due to a variety of circumstances.

Once the vehicles have been acquired by these organizations they need to be on-sold very quickly. To have them standing around just adds extra costs associated with safe storage, handling, and pre-selling, to the losses they have already suffered.

A number of sites offer listing details and site locations for Auction Car Sales. Some just glean the information from public notices and newspapers, while others charge a small one-time fee to access their vast databases. These databases are constantly being updated and provide more access to seized and repossessed cars than the free ones. Some even tell you where the Dealers buy from..!

Some basic research and background checks should be made by you before you rush out and start bidding.!

Find out the usual price of the make and model you are interested in. Look at online ads by Dealers, newspaper online classifieds, etc. Are you mechanically minded.? If not then take a friend with you who is. What about the local mechanic.? Maybe offer to buy them lunch - it's not going to break the bank - especially when you could be saving thousands of dollars with their help.!

Before you get bidding, find out the terms and conditions and how they expect you to pay; how you get to pick up the car, and any registration or tax costs..

One tip is to write down (and don’t show anyone else) exactly what your limit is going to be. You will be surprised how much over budget most people will go at an auction car sale. The fear of loss just keeps them bidding higher and higher. So write it down and keep to your limit - remember you are out to get a bargain..

Seized Car For Sale ..!!

If that headline appeared in your local classified I'm sure you would be on the phone straight away..??

Yet the Government still manages to sell off thousands of cars like this one every week... and you probably didn't even know about their seized goods sales.!!

Make no mistake, what we are talking about here are large amounts of goods going under the hammer. The IRS, DEA, FBI, Financial Organizations, local Police, and many other federal agencies, seize and impound millions of dollars worth of cars and other goods, every month..

These goods are taken from both people and businesses alike for a variety of reasons: Tax Fraud, Criminal Activities, Repossessions and many more, on a regular basis. As we said just before, the seized items are not just restricted to Automobiles either. Trucks, Boats, Furniture, Art, and even Homes are seized.

So, back to vehicles. When you see someone driving a car that is more expensive looking and a later model than you drive, do you think that they probably earn lots more than you do.?? 5 Tips When Buying A Car At Impound Auction

I will be the first to admit that this is not a definitive list of what to do when buying a Car at an Impound Auction. However it will remind you of some commonsense things that can easily be overlooked.

Tip #1.

You will most likely encounter a lot of people and a lot of competition at the Impound Auction. This is not a bad thing as it does go to show that folks recognize it as being "The Place" to get a bargain. To avoid you getting caught up by all the hustle and bustle I suggest you go along to a few Impound Auctions so you can get comfortable with the surrounds and what happens. You certainly don't want to be rattled when you are in a bidding and buying frame of mind..!

Tip #2.

Impound Auction sales often run at a hectic pace, especially with all the bargain hunters like yourself in attendance. It is really important to do your homework and research those cars that know you are interested in. Get to know the normal market values so that you won't overbid on anything. If possible, get yourself the latest copy of the Kelly Blue Book and make sure to take it with you. This book lists the market value of most makes and models and will virtually be your buying bible as far as prices go.

Tip #3.

It is not usually possible to take the vehicles for a test drive. Some places will allow you to start the engines and run them. This of course means that unless you know the particular history of the impound auction car you wish to bid on, you need to check it out. If you are not mechanically minded, then contact your local mechanic and perhaps offer to buy them a drink or give them dining voucher. A small token here could save you from buying a lemon.

Tip #4.

Contact the people organizing the impound auction that you are going to be bidding at before going. You need to ask them about the procedures for payment and the bidder's registration details. You have to be registered before you are entitled to bid. Also find out about the Buyers premium that you may have to pay. Perhaps explain to them that you are new to this and ask what tips they can give you for the Impound Auction.

Tip #5.

Get to the Impound Auction early.! You want to be feeling relaxed and in control. Something else not covered so far is to give some thought to obtaining temporary insurance cover for the car you buy at the impound auction. When you spoke with the Impound Auction people earlier you would have found out about how and when you actually get the car you have just bought.

Getting the lists of the vehicles being sold at the car impound auctions happening close to you is the next thing to organize. Don't have time to shop around trying to get together details of the various car impound auction sales.??

The best way to solve this is to register with one organization that maintains a reliable database of all upcoming impound auctions. Question: Are Repossessed Car Auctions a new thing ?

Repossessed or Repo Car Auctions have been in existence for some time.
It is only since the internet has become popular, that ordinary people are finding out about them.

Question: How did it come about ?

Seized Vehicles are now a fact of life. A company may default on its Fleet lease payments; an individual may be unable to maintain monthly payments; Government Agencies may seize vehicles purchased with proceeds of crime, etc. These Organizations reclaim the vehicles then sell them to help recover the debt.

Question: Do many people know about Repossessed Car Auctions ?

The Pro's & Con's of buying at Auction Car Sales

We have all done it ... wasted time trudging around Car Dealerships looking for something we can afford to buy; or wasted weekends pouring over the classified ads in all the newspapers searching for that great deal on a car.?

There has to be a better way to go about what should be a simple process of buying a car, right??
But, is using the Auction Car Sale method the best way to go about it??

Let’s look at the Pro’s & Con’s of an Auction Car Sale

Most people, wanting to buy a car, start off by doing some pretty basic research in order to get a feel for the value of different makes and models. This still applies today as well, except the biggest difference now is what the internet has made to the process.

This means you can now quickly visit a handful of sites put up by dealers, then the online classifieds posted by your local or national newspapers all from the comfort of your home or Office (in your breaks of course). You can now do the research in a hour or so, that used to take weeks..!!

Once you have a "Feel" for the market, you can start by listing out all the dealers in your area and begin doing the rounds. You also need the ability to get information from the Dealers without being stitched up by their salespeople..

Next you need to start contacting those private sellers you saw in the classifieds - more running around with little or no guarantee that you will find what you are looking for. Plus, there are only so many Auto’s that you can get to see in a day!

OR

You can search the Auction Car Sale listings with hundreds of makes and models - you already know which ones you like and are within your budget, by the earlier research you did.. You may find that your local newspaper has listings of where auctions are being held as well.

Now you have found the public auction location for vehicles, you need to contact them and make sure you know what is expected from you in regard to payment, registration, taxes, etc. You may also like to ask if they offer extended warranties.?

Also, they will have a day and time when you can go to the one Auction Car Sale place and inspect the vehicles you are interested in bidding for. If you do not have the knowledge yourself to carry out a thorough inspection, then it is advisable to take a friend with sufficient mechanical knowledge or your local trusted mechanic along to advise you.

As a useful tip, write out for yourself the maximum amount you are prepared to pay. Then should the biding get too frantic, you will have a reminder of your limit in front of you.
But don’t let others see this..!!!

By following the above you can more confidently participate in Auction Car Sales and drive away very happy in your new or used car, knowing you have saved yourself possibly thousands of Dollars and weeks of running around.

Know what it is..?

That's right, the 1st Car we buy will probably be the 2nd most expensive thing we ever buy, after our home.

If you don't yet own a home, then buying an Auto will likely be the most expensive thing you buy.. But it doesn't have to be scary.!

Even though there is so much information on the internet, buying a Car can still be nerve recking and fraught with pitfalls for most people. Weekends of "touring" the dealers lots trying to get a look at what they have on offer without getting pounced on by the sales people. Maybe the real reason for their high wire fences is not to keep out vandals and car thieves, but rather to keep prospects from escaping the lot too quickly.??

But, do you know what the hardest part of buying a car really is..? It's deciding what to buy in the first place.!!

Let's face it, when buying our 2nd most expensive item we need to be in control of what's going on. Buying at a Car Auction gives us just that...

Sure, there are some background preparations and some basic steps we need to take care of first. Ok, let's look at some steps to get you on the way..

Start by doing some thinking about what you are going to be using the car for; is it just to save using public transport to and from work.? Will you use it to get about on the weekends.? Maybe you want it for that long vacation you have been promising yourself..??

Are you seeing the logic here.? By identifying what you will use the car for will ultimately help with the selection of the type of vehicle. This will determine if you need to consider a 2 door coupe or 4 door sedan; a 4WD or a people mover.

Once we have narrowed down the type of vehicle we want, the next step is to begin some basic research on the makers of this type of vehicle. Talk with people you already know to see how they feel about their car; see if the manufacturer has a forum running on their website; read some car magazines and reviews etc. Sometimes your local paper will run a motoring section with reviews.

For researching prices, there are some resources we use listed over on the right hand side of our site under the heading "Research Toolkit". Some will give you actual car sales by area or zip code. Others you can subscribe to and get Auction listings for which ever area you specify.
