I’m a fan of new start up software or websites and one I found awhile back, is called, Crum.bs. It’s yet, another URL shortener. It’s easy to use…quite easy. Let’s take a look at a screen shot of the homepage.

As you can see from the homepage, it’s very simple. You don’t even have to register. Just put your url in the box and click on “crumble it”.  Let’s take a closer look at how simple that really is. It’s in video format without voice. Who needs to voice on simplicity, anyway?

One other neat thing you can do with crumbs is use an extension at the end. So, I could have done http://www.crum.bs/theaveragelife and limited how many clicks it can have. However, I do have to say that I think they should integrate the ability to check how many views it’s had. Otherwise, if you don’t like this URL shortener, you can always go to bit.ly..it’s a full fledged URL Shortener

Glarysoft recently released a new product, Glarysoft Disk Speedup Defragmentation Tool, on July 22nd. I read what it does and decided to give it a try.

First off, the installation was really easy.  Just download it, install it and start it. I shouldn’t have to review the installation process.

On their website, Glarysoft, states that their defrag tool does the following (And I quote word for word):

Upon starting up the software, I realized that this is almost the same as using Iobit Smart Defrag. Note: I said almost

Glarysoft Disk Speedup works by finding fragmented files in seconds while intelligently re-arranging those files to make the hard drive run smoother & faster. As, for we all know, that overtime the hard drive can be corrupted and not perform as well due to installing and uninstalling software.  I don’t think I should explain much in this department – for, if you have a computer, then you’ve probably used the built in microsoft defrag tool, which can get the job done too, but in more time. I’m not a super patient person and i’m usually at my computer, so I have to have it up and running at it’s peak. And let me tell you, I have used a ton of software in my lifetime.

I had really enjoyed Iobit Smart Defrag, but decided to just use built in, since I could defrag over night. Then I got Norton 360, which allows for defragging, but I never noticed it was actually doing one.  Since I have downloaded Glarysoft’s Defrag tool, i’ve performed several defrags, just too see if there would be changes in the amount of defrag there was. All I noticed is that the amount kept going down, so it was doing something. Let’s take a look at it’s sleek and easy to use interface:

As you can see, the interface’s overall look is pretty balanced. With white, dark blues & bright blues, It definitely seems to be more “web 2.0″ feel. If you look at the left side panel you’ll see it says:

• Defrag Now
• Auto Defrag
• Schedule

The defrag now button is what you see in the interface. It includes all of your hard drives, how much space it contains, how much space is left and it’s fragmented percentage. In the center panel, below the hard drives, you can see a set of buttons. The first button you can choose to Analyze, Defrag Selected  or Defrag selected and Optimize. See screenshot below for better understanding:

As you can see, it also allows to pause or stop the defrag and even includes an option to turn off the PC after defragmentation.  Just below those options you’ll find a graph. The graph is just a visual representation of your hard drive space and how much is used; but, it also show you the number of files that were analyzed and how many fragmented files there are. Let’s take a look at that.

That’s about it for the start up interface. Pretty easy to understand, right? So, let’s move onto the settings panel. We’ll start off with a large screen shot of the settings area.

In the setting’s panel on the left side you’ll find where it has a group of buttons:

• General
• Defrag
• Optimize
• Excludes

The general tab is what you see in the screenshot.  Here you can choose whether or not to activate certain features. Such as:

• start automatically on windows log on
• minimize to tray when you close the program window
• integrate disk speedup into the windows explorer context menu
• automatically check for updates
• simultaneous defrag of disks

If you look just below those options you’ll find a color pallet.  You can change the color of the defrag area to many different colors.  Let’s take a look at that, shall we?

That’s pretty easy to understand, huh…Let’s move on. The next box will show the “defrag” tab settings:

These options I felt can be left at default, unless they really matter to you. The next screenshot i’m going to show you the, “optimize” settings:

These settings are really optional..I for one don’t care if it moves the recycle bin items to the end of the drive or files accessed last month and as far as i’m concerned it can move all the file types it wants. It won’t change a thing in my explorer.  Finally, one last thing; the “excludes” screenshot.

Through this setting you can add files to exclude from being defragged such as your videos or images. I won’t mess with this setting, as I said above, it doesn’t really matter. The software can defrag whatever it wants to speed up the drive.

Finally, we’re at the end…

So, over all I’d say that this software is pretty good and much faster than Iobit’s Smart Defrag. I’d highly recommend anyone looking for a good defrag to give this software a go. Hey – it’s free after all!

This is not a crash course in security, but, rather as more of a reminder that yours & your readers safety on your blog is a necessity. The first thing anyone should do before they start meddling with wordpress is to install security plug-ins that protect your themes, admin, your readers and your content. Wordpess is vulnerable to exploits, no matter what! Here’s some tips you can follow to prevent falling prey to trojans, spyware or malicious scripts on your wordpress website or blog.

• Always keep your plug-ins up-to-date
• Always keep your themes up-to-date
• Always download  plug-ins and themes from a secure and safe website
• Do not download themes or plug-ins from warez, pirated or other websites (as they can contain malicious code)

So, you may already have some common sense and, know you shouldn’t do that. If you ask, why? Well, then simply put, it’s illegal.

Now, onto the good part. I’ve chosen some really great wordpress plug-ins that can help protect your wordpress site. So, start reading and then install them on your wordpress site!

1. WP Security Scan (scans your wordpress files for vulnerabilities)

2. TAC (scans your wordpress themes for encrypted malicious code)

3. WordPress Secure (General security checks, updates wordpress and plugins that are out of date)

4. Login Lockdown (logs all failed attemps to login to your wordpress site and if there are numerous attempts it will block the IP for one hour)

5. WordPress File Monitor (monitors files and sends an e-mail when changes are made, also a notifier in your admin area)

6. Backupify (backup your wordpress files)

Microsoft Security Essentials, which was previously released in September 2009, now has a new beta. Microsoft has added new features to the beta version; however, I don’t think they are features that we really need.

• Firewall Integration
• Protection from web based threats (with IE only)
• Improved protection engine

Now, all this beta needs is some Phishing protection, integration with firefox, chrome & opera and to be a bit faster on scans. If I wasn’t using Norton 360, then I would definitely give this a try. As, I bet coupled with Malwarebyte’s Anti-malware, I could have have some solid protection with less cpu usage.

I know i’m late on this kind of post, as it’s everywhere on the web..butI no longer use most of Google’s services and will most likely remove my entire account. Google’s changed over the years and well, I feel like Binging, now! So, If you have failed to find information on how to change your default search engine from google to bing, then look no further. Because i’ve got it right here.

Step 1:

In your address bar, type:  about:config

Once you’ve hit the enter key you will receive a notice that says, “This might void your warranty!”.  It basically says if you screw up the configuration then firefox might not work properly.  So, please be mindful when changing settings.

Step 2:

Click on, “I’ll be careful, I promise!”

Step 3:

Once the about:config page is loaded, you’ll see what looks like a search bar. Note the picture below as evidence:

Step 4:

Now, in that search bar, I want you to type in, “keyworld.url”. The search results are live, but you should get results similar to the following image:

Step 5:

Double click on the keyword.url item, and where it has the url of google’s search, you will erase it and replace it with Bing’s search.  I’ll show you how to look for the right URL for search’s.  Go to www.bing.com, then type in whatever you want in the search box. Your search results will come up. Look for the url:

http://www.bing.com/search?q=

That’s the starting point for any searches in Bing.  So remember when you read above that you will replace the default google search url with Bing’s search url.

Just copy and paste the above url into your about:config, “keyword.url” item. Now Click on “ok” and close that tab. Open a new tab, or restart firefox and type in a keyword…

Congo-ratulations! Bing should now be your default search provider.

since I had to reformat the computer, I figured I would give IE8 and bing a go around instead of doing the usual; installing firefox and using google. I’ve used google for years and always enjoyed it. However, I am finding that Bing is just as useful, if not better than google. With bing there are many options. First of all, I love the bing.com home page, great design, sleek and fast. Secondly, the searches are just about the same as google’s search. Bing also offers the ability to search with twitter and facebook for news content. You can also do a visual search if you’re looking for something in particular. You can find wallpaper and all sorts of other neat things, that, at the moment, I’ve forgotten (forgive me).

Anyway, no more firefox – I’ve gotten IE8 the way I want it. It renders pages just as fast as Firefox, plus there’s some new add-ons worth installing. Such as simple adblock, lightshot (for screenshots) and cool web accelerators to find information, maps, translators and weather. And since I use Malwarebyte’s for protection, I can be rest assured a bad webpage is automatically blocked in IE8. Thanks Malwarebyte’s! No to mention, I also use the big bad ass Norton 360, which protects my computer from harmful objects, although…I don’t go to nasty websites that harbor malware, adware or trojans.

Anyway, seriously thinking of dropping google altogether. I’m happy with Binging.

Earlier I was trying to install a printer driver on the computer. My printer has no more ink and honestly the print quality has really gotten bad, so no sense in using it. Anyway, my computer is attached to a network of other computers. Since the computer was reformatted I have had some trouble installing a printer on another computer through the network. I kept getting the error “the server that operates the printer has a bad printer driver”. I restarted the computer a few times to see if that would work. To my dismay, it did not. Then I figured I would just download the actual drivers to my computer. I did just that, as well as install the drivers. Then I went to search for the printer again and when I received the error, I browsed to the program files for the HP printer and found the file that was needed to install the driver. Voila! It re-installed the driver and I was able to print.

So, what do you do when you can’t install a printer through the network?

1. download the driver through the manufacturer
2. install the driver
3. locate the printer through the control panel “printers and faxes”
4. Attempt to install the printer
5. If the process asks for a file, then search for the program files folder for the HP printer driver is
6. select the driver file
7. driver should install
8. Printer should be installed -

If it fails to download the printer, then you might have the wrong driver isntalled on your computer. Make sure you are using the driver of the name of the printer.

This is software worth keeping at all times
