I didn't know that this was a thing, but I love that it is. Infertility has such a stigma attached to it (Why!?) and couples who struggle with it feel like they can't talk about it, which makes it exponentially harder to deal with.

Let's talk about it.

I stopped taking birth control in June 2015 after Spencer and I graduated from college. Our plan was that we wouldn't actively try for a baby while he was in law school, but we also wouldn't use any contraceptives. We felt like if it was supposed to happen, it just would. My first period was several weeks late, but this wasn't really unusual for me. My periods had been wildly irregular before taking birth control. To the point where I spent about 1/4 of my time in high school with an irrational fear of immaculate conception.

Except without the sex.

As my periods continued to space further and further apart, other strange things started happening. Despite diet and exercise, I started to pack on weight. And then my hair started to fall out to the point that the sink, shower, and vacuum were getting clogged almost weekly. Month after month, my period would be 3,4,5 weeks late, but when I took a pregnancy test, it would be negative. When I went a three month stretch without a period around Christmastime and was still not pregnant, I decided that I needed to go to the doctor.

My general practitioner ran a few tests and the only thing that was unusual about my bloodwork was that my testosterone levels were high. I immediately called Spencer and told him, "We've discovered why I can't get pregnant! ...I'm a man." I was told to go to a gynecologist for more specific tests.

I made an appointment with an OBGYN whose office was filled with pictures of babies to make me feel even worse. I should have taken this as a sign that this was not the office for me. I described what was happening to the doctor and she immediately took me back for an ultrasound. She told the tech to look at my ovaries. She pointed the wand over and they both gasped.

Not actually my ovary (because weird) but this is what it looked like

I'm pretty sure that it says somewhere in Med School 101 that you should never gasp at your patient's anything when they are in the room with you. "Wow," they kept saying over and over, "that could go in a textbook!" Which, once again, not the best thing to say while your patient is next to you. They went on like this for a few minutes before they remembered I existed. I was told to put my clothes back on so we could discuss what we had found. The doctor still hadn't told me what was wrong, but I figured that "textbook" ovaries were not a good sign.

When we got back to the exam room, the doctor told me that I had polycystic ovarian syndrome, which was causing my weight gain and hair loss as well. She told me that I had two options, go on birth control to get rid of the symptoms or start fertility medication. I told her that we would start fertility medication. She gave me a prescription for clomid and told me to start taking it three days into my period which should start soon based on the ultrasound and shooed me out the door to get blood work to make sure I didn't have diabetes. Oh, but she made sure to tell me before I left that she had patients with PCOS who could "eat nothing and gain weight."

A few weeks later, my period had still not started. I called the office repeatedly and finally got my doctor on the phone. This was our conversation:

Me: "You told me to start the clomid once my period started, but it hasn't started yet. What should I do?
Doctor: "You need to start taking it on day three of your cycle."
Me: "Yes. I know. It hasn't started yet. I saw you several weeks ago. You told me that my endometrium was thick and my period would start soon. It hasn't"
Doctor: "Hmmmm. Let me get your chart....Oh, your endometrium was only a few millimeters thick"
Me: "You told me it was thick"
Doctor: "That's very thin. If you knew how itty bitty a millimeter is..."
This is when I decided to get a new OBGYN as soon as possible
Me: "Ok, well what do you want me to do. I can't start the clomid until my period starts and it hasn't"
Doctor: "Yes, you need to take your progesterone and then you can take the clomid on day three of your cycle"
Me, internally: AHHHHHHHH!
Me: "You didn't prescribe me progesterone."
Doctor: "Yes I did."
Me: "No, you didn't."
Doctor: "Hmmm well, I'll send that in to your pharmacy and then once your period starts, you need to take the clomid on days 3-7 of your cycle."
Me:"......got it. Thanks."

You go through several cycles of clomid before other options are explored. While I was dealing with the joys of hormonal treatments, I had to deal with people saying these things:
"Why don't you have any kids?"
"When are you going to have kids?"
"You're lucky you don't have kids"
Spencer was at a "Fathers and Sons" campout for church because it was a part of his responsibilities at the time and someone literally said to him, "Why are you here? You don't have a son."

We told a few of our close friends about our infertility and talked with them about these experiences. One of our friends helped us come up with some fun responses to rude questions. When people asked why we didn't have kids, we wanted to say:
"Guess Spencer's shooting blanks!"
"It's so weird. We have unprotected sex all the time!"
"We saw your kids and decided we didn't want any."
Or, my personal favorite, "I don't know what we're doing wrong! We kiss every night before bed!"

We were lucky. I got pregnant on my third round of clomid and had a healthy pregnancy and a successful delivery (I won't say healthy delivery because y'all know what went down). But, at the time, we didn't know how long we would have to struggle with infertility. We still don't know what's going to happen when I stop breastfeeding or when we decide to have another baby.

I tried to make this post as humorous as I could because I think we can find humor in even the darkest times, but infertility is real and way more people struggle with it than you would think. Please don't ask people when they're going to have children or why they don't have any. And be sensitive around Mother's and Father's Day. And if you're a doctor, don't gasp when you look at someone's ultrasound.

As these articles often do, it described labor as "beautiful" and "magical," and said that "women's bodies were built to labor effectively." HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

As someone who recently experienced labor, I can testify that for me, this is not true. I know that some of you are thinking, "But my experience was magical! I felt no pain and my baby slid out of me effortlessly, smiling, with a full head of beautiful hair that was not covered in gunk!" Good for you. However, for the rest of us, let's not pretend that childbirth is not at least an intense experience.

I'll be honest, I was expecting an easy labor. My mother had four children, all with no pain medication, all in eight hours or less. She is one of those women the articles supporting natural birth are describing. My plan was to go natural. I had nothing against epidurals (besides the fact that they terrified me, but more on that later) but I wanted to do it without one if possible. I discussed this with my doctor and he agreed. I practiced my breathing. I thought of other things to focus on. I was ready. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

When I visited my doctor for my 36 week checkup, he told me that we were in it for the long haul; I was maybe 1cm dilated and 0% effaced. That baby was sticking around for a while. "It is possible that your water could break spontaneously," he said, "but that only happens in about 15% of pregnancies. I'll see you next week." That was Wednesday. Around 2am Saturday morning, my water broke spontaneously. I'm going to be honest with y'all. I woke up and needed to fart. I was pregnant, it happens. I did and felt a gush like I had peed. I hadn't yet hit the peeing your pants stage of pregnancy, so I thought that we had reached that point. I sighed and got out of bed.

Well, that's not pee, I thought. I screamed for Spencer to wake up as I ran into the bathroom. I called the doctor standing in the shower, fully clothed, while Spencer mopped up the path I had made between the bed and the shower.

We got to the hospital and checked in. They kept saying if my water had broken, I would get a room. If my water had broken, they would call my doctor in. I'm not joking, guys, I was standing there, dripping through my pants onto the floor and they didn't believe that my water had broken.

When they confirmed that my water had indeed broken, we were checked into a room and I was attached to a million wires. Just a few things no one told me about labor from the start:

If your water breaks, it does not stop leaking. I was in a constant state of wetness from 2am on. Unpleasant.

You will need to go to the bathroom a lot because the only thing you're allowed to consume is ice. This is good, because it actually helps you labor faster (in theory). The problem is that every time you want to get out of bed, you have to call the nurse and tell them that you're not dying, you just have to unplug the millions of things you're plugged into. "Hey, uh, I have to pee again," was something I said about a thousand times over the course of my labor.

Everyone will tell you that you can watch TV to pass the time. Unfortunately, I somehow found myself uninterested in the infomercials on every channel at 3am.

Incidentally, another good representation of my water breaking

After about an hour, I had not gone into labor naturally. Once your water breaks, they kind of need to get the baby out, so I was told that I would have to be induced. I knew that this was bad news bears. The only labor that my mother has ever complained about was the one that was induced. It was also the longest of her labors (8 hours, don't you feel so bad for her?...) But, I knew that for the safety of the baby and myself, we needed to get her out as soon as possible. They started the pitocin.

The contractions came on quickly. Every few minutes, it felt like the worst muscle cramp I'd ever had, starting from the top of my abdomen and going all the way down to my knees. I tried sitting. I tried standing. I tried lying down. I even tried squatting for half a second. Every time I had a contraction, I would think, "The pitocin is working. This is a good thing." I would chant that over and over in my mind while I breathed in my nose and out my mouth like they always say to. I'll have you know that all the nurses complimented me on my breathing, soooo.

After about five hours of this, the doctor came in to check on me. I won't go into details, but that in itself was fairly unpleasant. I had dilated an additional.........half centimeter. I was 1.5 cm dilated after five hours of what felt like excruciating labor. I was aware that there are three stages of labor, early, active, and transitional, each one becoming more painful and intense than the last. I was still in early labor. The doctor told me that I needed to prepare myself to be here for 24-36 hours. It was going to be a long labor. Everyone who talked to me when I was pregnant knows that this was my basic birth plan: If anything is going wrong, cut me open. I had heard too many stories of women suffering through terrible labors only to get a C-section anyway. I told the doctor this. He said that he wouldn't do that. A vaginal delivery is the most healthy for mom and baby and they'll do everything they can to insure that before they'll do a C-section.

So, I kept going. Spencer and I watched Parks and Recreation on my laptop for a while. I tried to read a book. I honestly don't remember how I passed most of the time. After a few more hours, the doctor came in to check again. 2 centimeters. He said that we were going to have to double my pitocin levels, which would mean even harder and faster contractions. It was at this point that my fear of an epidural was overcome. We called the anesthesiologist.

Side-note: Why is it that the blood pressure cuff always seems to go off in the middle of a contraction? So, not only are you in crazy pain all over your body, you're also having the life squeezed out of your arm. Then the nurses come in and say, "Your blood pressure was a little high there.." Yes. I feel like I was maybe slightly stressed at that moment. Anyway.

When you get an epidural, they tell you to sit up on the side of your bed, and then hunch over with the worst posture you've ever had in your life. Then, while telling you to not move under any circumstances, they stick a giant needle into your back. Which, believe it or not, hurts a ton. Meanwhile, contractions were still coming on strong. The anesthesiologist told me that it should start to feel warm and then numb in my legs and then work it's way up. It would be fully effective within twenty minutes. None of that happened. I was still having terrible contractions, shooting all the way down my legs. The nurse had my try hitting my "extra juice" button a few times, but to no avail. The epidural hadn't taken. I had to do it over.

So, the anesthesiologist came back. They made me hunch over the bed again. They pulled the catheter out of my back, and stuck another giant needle into me. "I was wondering if the last one wasn't quite right," the doctor mused very calmly. "It didn't feel right to me." Awesome. Thank you for pretending that it was going to work last time, then. I remember thinking, if this one doesn't take, I don't know if I can do this again. What are my options? Pass out? Die? Yeah, that sounds good.

Thankfully, my second epidural worked. And, let me tell you, epidurals are awesome. I felt nothing. I need another steroid shot? Sure! Need to check me again? No problem! I am a female warrior. I can conquer all. I am Beyonce.

Keep in mind, I had been awake for a very long time at this point.

We turned off the lights and Spencer slept while I dozed (kind of hard to sleep with a blood pressure cuff going off every fifteen minutes) for several hours. At around hour 22 of being in the hospital, I was finally 100% dilated and effaced. We were ready to push.

Side-note Two: I was so exhausted at this point, I kept thinking, "I'm so excited to be done with labor, then I can get some sleep." Then I would remember that when I was done with labor I would have a baby and never sleep again. Then I would regret every decision in my life that led me to that point.

With every contraction, the nurse had me hold up my noodley legs and push. She would say, "Great job! You're doing so good! Exactly like that!" and then I would plop my legs back down and breath, waiting for the next one. After about an hour, I started to think, "but am I doing 'so good'? If I was doing such a 'great job' wouldn't this gosh dang baby be out of me by now!?" After the second hour, I started to think, "You LIAR! I am NOT doing good! I am NOT doing a great job! GET THIS BABY OUT OF ME!" Or, you know, something like that.

When I had not produced a child after two and a half hours of pushing, the doctor was called in. He sat down, looked at me, and immediately said, "Yeah, no, we need to do a C-section."

He started this whole spiel about how "if we had a crystal ball and could've known this was going to happen.." I am not the type to do this, but I was so past my limit (and bedtime) at this point, I interrupted him and loudly said, "I asked you twenty hours ago if I could have a C-section because I thought that this exact thing would happen." I was your crystal ball and you ignored me!!!

So, they dressed Spencer in surgical gear, wheeled me down to the operating room, and pumped me full of even more drugs to numb me further. Did you know that the anesthesia they use to perform C-sections makes you shake uncontrollably? I didn't. Did you also know that even though you can't feel any pain, you can still feel everything they are doing to you? I felt them slice open my stomach. I can't even think of a better way to produce imagery for you, so I'll repeat it. I FELT THEM SLICE OPEN MY STOMACH. I heard my baby cry, and I'd like to tell you that it was this magical moment and everything was suddenly worth it and I looked like all the women in movies meeting their babies for the first time.

I was slightly distracted by the sounds of the doctor saying things like, "We need to stop that bleeding." I kept thinking, "This is it. This is how I die." Obviously I didn't die and it's pretty normal to lose blood during surgery, but I was finding it difficult to think clearly in the moment. Apparently, after they closed me up (which I felt too, by the way), the doctor came around the curtain to congratulate us, still covered in my blood. Spencer tells me this happened, I must've blocked it from my memory.

All in all, it was worth it. Everything they say about forgetting labor pains is true. I only have vague memories of what it felt like and the whole 24 hour experience now feels like a blur. I didn't cry when I met my baby and even for a week or so afterwards, it still felt surreal that she was my baby, but I would do it again for her.

But, when a week ago someone asked me if I was going to try to do VBACs for the rest of my children, I had one thing to say. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
We had planned to fly home on Sunday the 27th so that we could be home for our anniversary on the 28th. After church, Spencer got a notification that our flight to Chicago had been delayed by 50 minutes. This was a problem, since our layover in Chicago was only 45 minutes long.

After being on hold with Southwest for half an hour, Spencer found out that our flight from Chicago to Louisville was the last one that night. We booked flights for the next day. So, our second anniversary was going to be spent getting up at 4:00am to catch an 8:00 flight to Chicago, sitting in the Chicago airport for 4 hours, and then taking the two hour flight back home to Louisville. We had also lost our Early Bird Check-in when we switched flights, so we were going to have to pay $40 at each gate to upgrade Spencer to A boarding if we wanted to sit next to each other. We were less than thrilled. But, we were just excited to be home with our cat, so we were going to deal with it.

When we got to the Salt Lake Airport at 6:00 the next morning, we breezed through security, got some overpriced pastries, and sat next to our gate. Maybe things would go our way after all. I think you can see where this is going.

As I stood in line to board, someone announced over the intercom, "Attention Southwest passengers to Chicago. Flights from Chicago to Las Vegas, Orlando, Newark, Atlanta, and Mobile have been cancelled. Please see a representative if you would like to change your flight schedule."

The people in line had one of those weird moments of stranger solidarity as we all looked nervously toward each other for support. "Excuse me," the man ahead of me asked the attendant, "Are all flights out of Chicago being cancelled? That was quite a list!"

"Not yet," the attendant replied as he continued to scan boarding passes nonchalantly.

Ah, yes, comforting.

The flight was really uneventful for the most part. Spencer was able to save me a seat and we watched Food Network together on the iPad. We were about thirty minutes outside Chicago when the pilot made an announcement. "Well folks, Chicago has been hit by some freezing rain. They've closed down all the runways and they aren't letting any planes in or out." Spencer and I looked at each other in grim amazement as he continued, "So, we're going to be diverted to Louisville."

WHAT!?

It was an anniversary miracle.

But, slowly, my pessimism began to take its toll. "Spencer...what if they don't let us off the plane?"

"Why wouldn't they let us off the plane?"

"I don't know. I feel like that's a thing they do sometimes..."

I was mostly thinking of this episode of 30 Rock, where they get stuck on the tarmac for hours.

But still, a legitimate fear.

We landed in Louisville and sat on the tarmac for a while without word from anyone, furthering the Liz Lemon panic attack growing inside me. Finally, the pilot announced, "There were five other planes diverted here from Chicago, so they don't have enough gates for all of us. I'll let you know as soon as I know anything. In the meantime, I'm turning the fasten seatbelt sign off. Feel free to move around and use the bathrooms."

I got up to use the bathroom at the front of the plane and since it was occupied, I ended up standing right next to the flight attendants. I figured now would be a good time to calm down my crazy. "If Louisville is our final destination, we'll be able to get off here, right?"

"We don't know yet."

Excusemewhat. "That wouldn't make any sense though, right? Would they really make me fly all the way to Chicago to come back here?"

Now. I had not raised my voice. I was not letting those women know the hell storm of fury that was rising from the depths of my soul. But I was given the authority voice. You know the voice I'm talking about. Equal parts condescending and angry, with that splash of polite so you can't complain to corporate later. I know that voice. I've used that voice. Don't give me that voice!

"Ma'am," the flight attendant started, "we do not know. You'll have to wait until we hear from the captain."

I mumbled something to the effect of, "oksorryjustthinkingoutloud"

Then the flight attendant picks up her phone thing, looks me in the eye, and says, "Ladies and gentlemen, although we are on the ground, it is important that you not form a line for the forward lavatory. Please scoot about 4 or 5 rows back for safety reasons. Thank you."

.....

When I got back to my seat, I was in full blown panic mode. I'm sure I was ranting like a lunatic.

"Spencer. We have to get off the plane, Spencer. I'm not going to Chicago, Spencer! THEY CAN'T MAKE ME GO TO CHICAGO, SPENCER!"

I had a plan. And I'm dead serious, guys, I think I would have done it. They can't move the plane if someone is standing up. I was 100% ready to stand up and refuse to sit down until they let me off that plane or they got a policeman to escort me off. I'm also pretty sure there were at least six other people going to Louisville on that plane. We could have mutinied. We could have done it. It would have been beautiful.

Luckily, they let us off the plane and I still have a clean record.

Classroom Management

I recently started teaching at a new school. A new school has given me an entirely new set of challenges. Firstly, these kids are huggers. Rule #1 of teaching: don't touch the children. At least three times a day, a student will surprise me with a hug, which, between their 11-year-old awkwardness and my inability to touch them, looks like this:

I am Malfoy in this situation.

On the other end of the spectrum, a large portion of my day is dedicated to getting yelled at/ignored by prepubescents. These are some typical classroom conversations:

Me: I love it when people are doing their work quietly without talking

- every student is talking, paying no attention to me whatsoever-

Me: Please stop talking

- every student is talking, paying no attention to me whatsoever-

Me: If you're talking, you're losing points

- every student is talking, paying no attention to me whatsoever-

Me: Alright, let's focus!

- every student is talking, paying no attention to me whatsoever-

Me: STOP TALKING. IF YOU WANT TO OPEN YOUR MOUTH, DON'T.

-five seconds of silence-

- every student is talking, paying no attention to me whatsoever-

-class is relatively quiet, but two students are facing each other and noises are coming from their direction-

Me: Johnny and Jane, please stop talking.

Johnny: I WASN'T TALKING!!!!!!

Me: sigh

My fifth period class is really the only one that makes me want to pull out my hair on the regular. Once, I had really had it. They were all talking constantly, crawling under desks, arguing with me, and taking their shoes off (apparently this is a thing?). Needless to say, there was little work being done. I freaked out. I shouted. I lectured. I guilted. And, oh, I can guilt. I let them have it for a few minutes. Then I dismissed them for full effect.

I was pretty proud of myself. Maybe I had really gotten through to them this time. Then I realized that my zipper had been down the entire time.

I was the 12-18 month toddler teacher at a daycare. I was in charge of 6-12 toddlers for 9 hours every day. Here are a few of the lessons I learned.

1. The training is laughable. If you're asking yourself, "How did Mary get a job at a daycare? She's never had any training," you are correct! I can't speak for every daycare, but they threw me to the wolves after one day of "training." The training consisted of videos that told me in several different ways that I shouldn't beat the children. It actually also told me that I should never "use a harsh or negative tone of voice with the children" HA. You try to sweetly coax a toddler down from sticking their finger in a socket while three others are climbing onto the table. As one of my coworkers said, "Honey, they look cute, but these things'll eat you alive." The training also told me to eat lunch "family style" with the toddlers. I quickly learned that if I followed that advice, I would never eat again. Watching a child take soggy chewed bread out of their mouth which they then feed to another child just makes you lose your appetite.

2. You will be sick. Always. I expected to get sick. Children are disgusting germ monsters. Everyone knows this. The first week, I felt like I had a really bad cold. I took some days off because my method for combating illness is to take some time off so I can get better faster. That worked...until I went back to work and the cold came back full force. Meanwhile, all of the kids were having disgusting diarrhea blowouts (more on that later) so I lived in fear of developing that as well. The cold continued to get worse, so I went to the doctor where I found that I actually had both bronchitis and sinusitis. I was prescribed antibiotics and after getting an allergic reaction that made me look like Madam Mim for a while, I started to feel better over the weekend. Then I went back to work. I was hit again with the same thing, this time with fever and vomiting as well. I've never been more ill in my life. And I had swine flu in high school.

3. Don't let them hand you anything ever. Toddlers don't know how to play. They have three things that they like to do with toys: dump them all over the floor, bang them against things to give people headaches, or hand them to you and wait for you to hand them back. Most of the time it's the third one. A cute little child would come up to me and hand me a toy horse. I would neigh and make it gallop and point out its eyes and its hair. The child would stare at me blankly. I would hand the toy horse back. The child would walk away to find something else to hand to me. This was all well and good until the toy they handed me was wet and I didn't know why. If something is wet, I need to know why! Even better is when they hold out their hand and give you a dried booger they found on the floor or a wet one from their face. Thanks...awesome...

4. Parents don't believe you. Toddlers bite each other. Can we all just agree on this? If your child gets bitten at daycare, it's probably because they were taking a toy from someone or had a toy that someone wanted. Toddler politics are not highly advanced. Parents would grill me on what exactly happened, where was I, what did I do to stop it, how can I not magically keep a room of 12 toddlers under control by myself? One parent mentioned that the bite mark on her child's arm had a full set of teeth. "I didn't think toddlers had all their teeth," she said slowly, "she had canine marks." She then looked at my co-teacher and I pointedly. Um, I did not bite your child, if that's what you're insinuating. I am not about to put my mouth on something that germy. We later observed the child biting her own arm. Apparently she had a full set of teeth.

5. If a kid has a blowout....I learned nothing. Really, all you can do is panic. As I mentioned before, there was a particularly nasty bout of diarrhea making its rounds through the toddler room. "They doctor says it's not contagious," every parent said as they dropped off their child. The Typhoid Mary's dad literally said, "the doctor says it's not contagious," immediately after he said, "yeah, it's pretty bad. We've all had it." There were blowouts, of course. By the end of every day we had several kids running around in just diapers because they had blown through their supplies of emergency pants. But there was one day that I will forever remember. We were sitting in the corner reading when one of the kids farted pretty loudly. I chuckled to myself and continued reading (obviously a mistake from the context of this story).

A few minutes later, I noticed there was a lot of some mysterious goo all over some of the pillows. In slow motion, I traced the goo back to its source, a little boy we'll call Johnny. He was covered. The room was covered. The other kids followed my gaze and started trying to touch the goo. I immediately grabbed Johnny and held him at arm's length. And then....what? What do I do!?! I looked across the divider at my co-teacher and apparently the horror was loud and clear. She immediately rounded up the other kids and brought them over to her side. I carried Johnny to the changing table, still not sure how to tackle this. He and I stared at each other for a second, neither one of us being capable of solving the situation. I could see the shame in his eyes before he burst into tears.

Luckily, word had somehow gotten out about my predicament and other teachers came to the rescue. A veteran daycare worker talked me through the process like she was teaching me how to dismantle a bomb. "Ok, easy, easy. Just slip his pants off, but don't let them touch the table. Just a little further. There you go. Good job." We got Johnny into his emergency pants after scrubbing him down in the sink. Then came the work of cleaning off the pillows, books, toys, walls, and carpet that had been compromised. Then, I needed to change into one of the daycare's shirts because, of course, mine had been covered during bomb squad duty.

That was the day I put in my two weeks notice. But, on the bright side, I still have the shirt. I would call it free, but there was certainly a cost.

Book Club

Ok, ok, it's been over a year since I last posted. But! I have an excellent excuse! See, like many Millennials at the moment, my experience since graduating college has largely been unemployment (other than a stint working at a daycare, but more on that later). Guys, unemployment is mind-boggingly dull. I mean, I don't have to wear real pants most of the time, which is cool, but you don't want to hear about that. Or about how many episodes of Grey's Anatomy I watch every day, which is a lot.

Why, Shonda? Why!?!?!?!

So, I've learned from my months of being at home that it's really difficult to find yourself in uncomfortable social situations when you don't socialize with anyone other than your husband, who is not allowed to think you're awkward.

When we moved to Louisville, I was invited to join a book club. Talking to actual other people!? Sign me up! I probably would have joined a self-surgery club if someone had asked me (like the interns had that one time...get it?...) but luckily they have a book club, which is far more enjoyable and arguably less dangerous.

I went to my first meeting last night and luckily they didn't talk much about the book that I hadn't read. We started talking about Young Adult trilogies and how the last book is almost always terrible. Someone mentioned Divergent and I said, "Oh my gosh, I hated how it ended!" Everyone agreed.

Someone mentioned that she thought it was weird that the entire series had been in first person from Tris's viewpoint and then it suddenly switched in the last book. I though, Hmmm, that's weird. I don't remember that, but it's been a while so whatever.

Then, SPOILER ALERT (but...it's been out for two years so get over it) someone else said, "Yeah, but once Tris dies, Four has to continue the story, so she was probably just building up to that."

Hold the phone.

Tris dies?

When did that happen?

I had no recollection of that happening at all. I told everyone that I didn't remember that happening. I thought that maybe in the chaos of the end of the book, I somehow missed that plot point.

"Uhhhh, it's a pretty major part of the book," someone said.

So, while everyone continued to talk about Allegiant, I sat there, dumbfounded, questioning my reading comprehension skills. Every once in a while, I would mutter, "How did I miss that?" to half-hearted shrugs from anyone that heard me.

I got home that night and immediately looked up the plot summary of Allegiant on Wikipedia. I thought I would read through it and see what I had missed. I got through the first two sentences, before I stopped, dumbfounded.

"Tris is shocked by the video released to the public at the end of the Erudite headquarters raid. The video revealed the truth about the faction system and announced that Divergent are needed outside the borders of the city."

That was the end, I thought. That's what happened at the end of the book.

Apparently after I finished Insurgent, my brain, trying to protect itself from any more terrible writing, tricked me into thinking I had finished the trilogy.

I'm not sure I can show my face at book club again. Anyone up for some appendectomies?
I love giving gifts. I hover around the person, waiting for that moment when they see what's inside the wrapping, waiting to see the smile that tells me I picked out exactly what they never knew they desperately needed. You know what, I'm probably a pretty bad gift giver, too. That sounds incredibly annoying. Anyway, I'm a terrible person to give gifts to because I cannot hide emotion on my face. Just can't. If I don't like something, I'll try my hardest not to show it, but you'll know. Because of this, I try to remove all emotion from my face whenever I open any gift. So, even if I love it, I probably won't seem that excited. I'm the worst. Apparently, at my bridal shower, I didn't show a ton of emotion. They only knew what I was thinking because my face got a shade redder every time I opened a gift of lingerie.

But, on to the moment of my gift receiving disgrace.

The second time that I stayed at Spencer's parents' house, I was still pretty terrified of them. They're nice people, but I know that they didn't like me for a long time before they met me (the whole breaking up with him and then getting back together thing didn't go over so well with them). We went up to their house for Spencer's birthday and because my birthday is about a week before his, they surprised me with a birthday present.

When I opened, the box, I was slightly confused, because I unwrapped a box of these:

For some reason, I couldn't decide if that was actually what the gift was or if there was something inside the box. I really liked the small dessert cups and matching adorably tiny spoons, but I wasn't sure if that was what the gift actually was. My fears were that:

A. I would open the box to look inside and it would be the dessert cups. They would think I was a maniac.

B. I would say "Thank you" and then they would laugh and laugh because I didn't look for what was really in the box.

Neither of these seemed like desirable options to me, and as we all know, when I panic, I do nothing. So, I sat and stared stupidly at the box for a while.

"I'm sorry if you don't like it. I have the receipt; you can exchange it. I just figured, since you love cooking so much..." My poor future mother-in-law said.

I felt so awful! I really did like them, I had just had no idea what to do and probably made a scrunched up thinking face that looked like a scrunched up disgusted face and offended everyone in sight.

So, when we got back to Provo, I immediately made peanut butter mousse and chocolate ganache to put into the cute little cups (that I love, gosh dang it!). I had Spencer take about a million pictures of Elaine and I enjoying our desserts that he was supposed to send to his mother to prove that I was enjoying her gift. I found out about a month ago that he never did.

Here are some of the pictures. Maybe she'll stumble upon them some day.
To me, it's just a filler word for a lot of people that means "I don't like that. Therefore, it should not be done." Just because you personally wouldn't do/watch/listen to/say something, that doesn't make it inappropriate.

Ok. </rant>.

About a month ago, Spencer got called to be the ward choir pianist. He's very good at the piano, but he was slightly out of practice and therefore very nervous. Before the choir's first number with Spencer as accompanist, he was kind of freaking out. Between choir practice and Sacrament meeting, we were sitting in our usual pew and I was trying to get him to calm down. His hands were ice cold (which is what happens when he's nervous. Weird, right?). I started scratching his back as I told him that it was going to be ok.

"Excuse me!"

We both turned to see an older woman sitting by herself, leaning forward across her pew two rows behind us with an angry look.

"Are you going to stop doing that before Sacrament? Because if not, I'm going to have to leave."

I was completely taken aback. I stammered out a "No, we're going to stop," but I could barely finish before she said,

"I'm just sick of it. It's distracting and rude and, frankly, inappropriate. We're in church."

I was humiliated. She was speaking rather loudly and there were probably 5-6 people sitting immediately around us that could clearly hear what was happening. We tried to apologize again, but she kept her lecture going, telling us that she was sick and tired of seeing couple after couple in front of her scratching each others backs. Apparently, the sound of fingernails against cotton is much more distracting to her than the thirty or forty children under the age of twelve chattering through the meeting.

After we apologized again and turned around, I immediately burst into tears. That's what happens when I get lectured. It's an automatic response that I've had as long as I can remember. So, then I was doubly embarrassed. Also, that meeting was when I was going to be sustained as the second counselor in the Primary presidency, so I knew that I needed to get those tears under control or people were going to think that I really hate working with children or something.

The funniest part to me about this event is that back scratching is far from the worst PDA I've witnessed during Sacrament meeting. I've seen kissing, foot rubs, and straight up making out. For reals. There's an account on Instagram called byupda that documents instances of super gross PDA on campus.

One of their gems posted last month.

This ward puts that account to shame at times. I don't know if it's something in the Sacrament bread or what, but back scratching is a very minor offense.

By the way, we haven't dared back scratch again. I ended up with a C in the class, which honestly was kind of a pleasant surprise (there goes grad school). For our final, we had to take a practical exam. We had to cut out fabric with a pattern, sew a dart, make three buttonholes, and attach facing. I finished it really quickly and was pretty proud of myself. I looked around and everyone else was still working.

No one's project looked like mine.

I realized that I had done it backwards. I looked down at my beautiful buttonholes (one area of sewing in which I excel) and knew that if I wanted to do this the right way, I would have to start over. So, I did what any self-respecting college student would do. I turned in my horribly wrong project and walked away.

A few days ago, I ran into my TA from the sewing class. That poor girl saw me cry several times and had to grade my atrocious work. I actually felt a little uncomfortable seeing her. We chatted for a little bit and then I made my escape. "See ya!" she smiled at me as I walked away.
Don't ask me why. I don't know anymore. I don't know anything anymore. All I know is that I am terrible at making clothing. Especially clothing that doesn't have giant holes in it or would actually fit a person.

I can feel the pity oozing off of my professor. She knows that I know that I am deficient in seamstress skills. She says my name at least once during every lecture and then pauses, looks, and smiles at me.
"When you're sewing a side seam, Mary, you need to be sure that you're going very straight."
"Be sure to trim and grade your edges, right Mary?"
"Mary! You suck!"
Ok, she didn't say the last one, but it was definitely implied.

Every lab consists of me looking sadly at my project, both dreading and hoping that the TA will see my dejection and help me out. I unpick seams and sigh a lot. That seems to do the trick.

Out of the two projects that we have completed, I have ripped holes into both with the serger. What is a serger, you ask? A machine of death and destruction that feeds on your tears as you desperately struggle to thread it! Seriously, this is how you attempt to thread a serger:

There's a knife along the edge that cuts the fabric off of your seam allowances and binds the edges as you push it through. That would be great, if you had the capability to not bunch up the rest of your skirt that you've worked on for 3 weeks and rip a gigantic hole in it.

I love that skirt, but every time I go to church, I fear the moment I sit down. Because deep down, I know that those tiny hand-stitches I haphazardly placed on the sides to cover the holes will burst open, revealing my thighs to the entire congregation.

I literally have the worst score in the entire class (thank Learning Suite class statistics) and it is well deserved.

Those two scores below me, they've come to class once each.

There were three rounds of auditions:

Write an original sketch under two minutes and perform in front of a giant room of people.

They call back about thirty of those people and then set them into groups to write and perform sketches on the fly.

They call back eight of those people to direct and perform the original sketch they wrote and a Divine Comedy sketch in a final show.

I made it to the last round and figured that some of you might want to watch my performances. Spencer took this videos for me. He missed the one where I was in a fight getting swung around in circles screaming on a girls shoulder, but we'll forgive him.

The first one was the sketch that I wrote and performed in the first round of auditions and then refined for the final show.

The next one is a Divine Comedy sketch that Lauren Meese wrote last year.

By the end of the semester, I will have written a 15-page paper, and hopefully will not have collapsed at any point. I'm taking the section about memoirs, because I enjoy reading memoirs, and if I have to write a 15-page paper about something, I better enjoy it.

However, because of the pretension inherent in English majors, the class discussions typically turn from talking about the actual memoir to talking about the meaning of truth and getting all existential on me. We once discussed the meaning of the word "meaning" for twenty minutes. Seriously.

The class is really interesting, the reading is great, and the professor is super nice, but I really cannot handle my fellow English majors sometimes. As a fellow classmate said the other day, "Guys, if you're not Justin Timberlake, don't buy that fedora." And I concur. Once, I walked into the class and one of the two men in the class was saying, "One day I just decided that it shouldn't be about how I look that day, it should be how I feel. I stopped looking in the mirror before I left the house and instead started assessing my attitude about life."Almost word for word.

Because the class is based on writing a daunting capstone paper, the professor meets with us periodically too see how our work is progressing. The first meeting was a week or two into the semester and he had just told us that the next memoir that we would be reading had a rather graphic section that we could skip if we so wished.

Now, I get kind of annoyed by people who are really squeamish about books that we read in out classes, because honestly, it's never that bad. And I have a somewhat high tolerance for indecency and a low amount of kindness. That's probably a bad thing. Anyway, I was determined to prove to this professor that I wasn't like that. I was cool.

We started talking about my paper and then he reminded me about the section that I was allowed to skip. I laughed and said, "Oh, no. When you said that there was a part I could skip, I though, 'Sweet! I'm definitely reading that part!'."

He got very serious.

I immediately regretted my decision.

"Yes, it's a very graphic scene of the rape of a child, so many readers find it disturbing."

"Oh."

We went on with the discussion and I kept trying to find ways in which I could drop that I was not a sociopath. I eventually managed a, "I promise I'm not a psycho" before the meeting was over.

Maybe I should just start wearing a fedora and shut my mouth.

The book is great, by the way. You might just want to skip a few pages....

Spencer and I met in a fairly normal way. He was in my ward. Our apartments hung out together all the time. We became friends. Standard stuff. There's also some pretty awkward stuff in there, too.

For instance, I had a crush on his roommate before I liked him. We've both come to terms with it. Spencer and I still hung out all the time by ourselves. And (because I'm an idiot) it never occurred to me that he might have been tricking me onto pseudo-dates. He would start bets over the smallest little things and whoever lost would have to take the winner out for ice cream. He didn't care if he won or lost. He just wanted to go out for ice cream with me. He usually paid even though I always lost the bets because apparently he felt guilty about it.

The most awkward incident was one that I have been wanting to write about for a long time, but wasn't sure if I should. Now that we're engaged, I feel fairly secure.

The day before I left for Christmas break, Spencer came over and bought me breakfast. I was feeling sick, so he was definitely coddling me. We started to watch a movie and slowly cuddled more and more. What can I say? I was sick and it felt snuggly! I had told him a few days before that I just wanted to be friends, so the poor thing was probably very very confused.

When he started to leave, we walked to the door and hugged. The hug lasted longer than I expected and then when he pulled back, he kept his face very close to mine. I didn't know what to do. Was he trying to kiss me? I was sick! That's gross! I was terrified. I panicked. And what do I do when I panic? Strange things.

I kissed him. But, he wasn't expecting it, so he turned his head and I missed. I apologized and then suddenly he was kissing me. But, when I say kissing, I mean kissing. I can barely breathe through my nose and here's this kid who I thought was just my friend, making out with me!

It probably looked something like this.

We stopped after a few seconds and kind of laughed and then he left. I wanted to die. I went to call my mother and then I realized that I did not have my phone. I must have left it in his car when we went to get breakfast! I heard a timid knock on the door. I answered it and there was poor Spencer. He handed me my phone, mumbled something, and left again.

A few hours later, I was feeling really really awful. I took my temperature and it was 102, so I was still very contagious. I called him, but he didn't answer so I left a message something like this: "Hey it's Mary. I took my temperature I'm still contagious so take lots of vitamin C and never talk to me again ok bye."

Poor Spencer.

Most have gone off without a hitch on my part. I showed up. I hugged people. I ate free food. I danced. I was merry. However, there was one incident that was less than comfortable.

My friends, Whitney and Stephen, were getting married. Actually, Stephen is the famous Bow-tie. (I feel safe revealing his identity now because I'm pretty sure he's read this blog before. I doubt it would be that difficult to put two and two together). But that's not what was awkward.

Stephen and Whitney are cooler than me. I'll be the first to admit it. I like having friends that are cooler than me. I can steal their fashion ideas. They were both in the campus sketch comedy group, Divine Comedy, and are both now on a BYUtv show called Studio C. That's also not what made this situation awkward. I just wanted to give them a plug. You're welcome. All five people that read this blog will now watch your show.

It's pretty popular with the kids these days.

Whitney had been talking to me about her wedding plans and it sounded like it was going to be a pretty cool event, so I grabbed my roommate and we were off. I was wearing what my friend Scarlett likes to call my "Utah outfit." It's a mint green and white striped maxi skirt with a white t-shirt and a grey scarf. I wouldn't normally describe my outfit to you, but it's important to the story. Bear with me.

We pull up, find a parking spot and make our way into the backyard where the reception is being held. Horror. Pure horror. Remember how Whitney had been talking about wedding plans? She had told me her colors. I had forgotten them. And that's why I was matching the wedding party in mint and grey. Not only were they wearing mint and grey. They were wearing mismatched mint and grey. So, I looked like I belonged. But I didn't.

My roommate started laughing hysterically as I desperately looked around at the mint dresses and skirts that surrounded me. It looked like I was trying to be part of the wedding. I should have listened to Scarlett and stayed away from that cursed outfit!

I saw Whitney and went to say congratulations/make my apologies. "I am so sorry! I did not intend to imply that I was a sister or close friend!" I said as she walked towards me. She quickly brushed aside my comment, but that outfit is forever haunted by my accidental attempt at being a bridesmaid.

Bathroom Break

Dang it! I had resolved to return to my usual Sunday posting routine, and then completely forgot about it. You'd think that with Spencer out of town, I would have realized that there was something I could do beside moping around and slowly falling in love with Adam Scott while marathoning Parks and Recreation.

Pretty much the only time that Rob Lowe isn't the most attractive person in a picture.

Other trying to read Anna Karenina, giving up and watching more Parks and Rec, and then trying to find clothes in which I could dress Spencer like Ben, the only thing I've really been doing this summer is working. I love my job and the people I get to work with, but being here so often has left me with a few instances of workplace awkwardess that I would rather forget.

For example, the time that a routine bathroom break went horribly awry. Don't worry and/or get excited, this is just about people being awkward.

The bathroom closest to the cave in which I work is an anomaly to me. It consists of an outer door that locks, and then inside that door there is a room big enough for three or four normal sized stalls. Instead of three or four normal sized stalls, however, there is one giant stall with a comfy chair in it. Why there needed to be a stall at all inside of a bathroom with a locking door, I will never understand.

The other day, I got up to go to this enigma of a bathroom. The door was unlocked, it even said so on the sliding panel above the lock, with its happy green "unoccupied" sign. I opened the door, and to my horror, there was a girl in there, washing her hands. I suddenly had no idea what to do. Technically, there was a stall, and in any other bathroom, this would be ok. But, I was used to absolute privacy in this bathroom, as was she, I'm sure. We stared at each other for a full second. She was taking her sweet time washing her hands and wanted me to know that she would slow down for no full-bladdered woman.

Deciding that it would be more uncomfortable to slink back to my desk and try again later, I went into the stall. She left a few seconds later, and I realized that this could only be the beginning of a chain of events. She couldn't have locked the door on her way out, leaving me exposed in this one stall bathroom of confusion. What if someone else came in while I was washing my hands!? And then I would be left unable to lock the door for them. There would be confused and uncomfortable women sharing this bathroom for the rest of eternity!

Luckily, no one came in and I was able to wash my hands in peace. But seriously, why would you not lock the door? And why is there even a stall!?!

Betrayal

In high school, I dated my best friend Drew. We have successfully proven that exes can remain good friends, because we still talk at least once a month despite our horrendous college schedules. (Yes, Drew, although I am an English major, I still have to do things . . . sometimes). On occasion, I wonder if he has remained friends with me simply to hang out with my family. For example:

Our freshman year of college, I saw package after package of goodies delivered to the girls in my hall. One of my best friends, whose parents lived thirty minutes away sent her a package at least once a month. I never got anything. That was ok. I was mostly confident that my parents loved me, but I would whine to Drew about it every time we Skyped, which at that point was once every two or three days.

I told him that I had never even gotten cookies or brownies delivered from my parents in Florida. He was taken aback. "But, Mary," he stuttered, "your mom sent me brownies last week." I didn't believe him at first. I didn't want to believe him. But he was dead serious and even offered to call my mother with me and ask her.

We called my mom and put her on speakerphone, Drew said, "Mrs. Fulton, Mary doesn't believe that you sent me brownies last week. Thank you, by the way, they were delicious." My mother confirmed to her one and only daughter living over 2,000 miles away that she had sent her ex-boyfriend brownies, leaving her chocolate-less and unloved.

A is my mother, B is Drew, and C stands for calloused and bitter

Drew described in detail over the next few days the delicious, gooey, homemade brownies that my mother had lovingly sent him while she apologized profusely for her misdeeds.

I found out about two weeks later that it was an elaborate ruse. Drew had lied on the spot and my mother had sensed Drew's subtextual plea and complied with his evil plan. My ex-boyfriend and my mother were in cahoots.

I still haven't gotten any brownies.

The Letter

Oh man. I haven't posted since last semester. Apparently, taking 12 credits of pure literature classes wasn't the best idea I've ever had. But, finals week is drawing near, papers need to be written, flashcards need to be studied, and instead of doing any of that, I'm going to fill y'all in on some of the awkward moments that have occurred over the last four months of my life.

I've started dating my wonderful friend Spencer, who was present for The Incident. If a man can witness you vomiting in a bowling alley and still want to date you, he's probably a keeper. He's far more romantic than I am, and is in the habit of leaving me little notes and letters if I'm especially stressed or have a test that day.

Not to be outdone, I decided that the next time that he had a test I would write him a note, be more romantic than him, and therefore reclaim my right to femininity. So, I wrote a little note and waited until I saw him between classes to hand it to him. He was walking me to work when we reached the point when we would need to part from each other. Other couples stop and make out or stare lovingly into each other's eyes. We typically high five. Because we're awesome.

So, we're about to part when I remember that I have a note for him in my backpack. I reach into the small pocket on the front and pull out the folded notebook paper on which I have expressed my emotions in the form of a stick-figure cartoon. I hand it over and he looks at it, first with affection, and then in sheer puzzlement. I look over and realize that I have handed him the wrong paper. I handed him this:

The paper that I had used to blot my lipstick a few days before. Luckily, I still had it in my backpack so I could take a picture of it for you. He says that to this day, he has never seen me laugh harder than I did at that moment as I grabbed the seduction-stained paper from him and handed him the real note. I'm sure many bystanders were worried about my sanity.

Oh, how I wish that were true. You see, you can't just walk away from an incident like that.
I left off with the deletion of a certain picture which could have launched me to internet stardom. However, we had an entire forty minute car ride through those mountain roads to endure. Don't freak out, there wasn't a repeat of "the incident" as it's come to be known.

We got into the car, my date continually telling me that it was no big deal, and that it happened to everyone, and all kinds of other lies. We got into the car and I asked if anyone had gum in the most subtle way I could muster. Everyone grimaced a bit, but luckily I was given something minty. I foolishly thought that I might be able to recover by having a witty conversation. The boy driving had something else in mind. Apparently, how he deals with awkward situations is by listening to a Jerry Seinfeld standup routine on CD. Yeah, instead of being able to talk and prove that I was a normal person instead of a vomit machine, I had to sit in silence in the backseat as we pondered the important life question, "What's up with that!?"

When we reached my apartment, my date realized that his roommates probably hadn't gotten home yet and he hadn't brought his keys. He asked me if he could hang out in my apartment for a bit. I said yes, but I wondered what I was supposed to do in this situation. I wanted to shower. Immediately. I wanted to brush my teeth and wash my hair and sleep until I was dead, but this was no longer a viable option. We walked into my apartment and were greeted by the impromptu party that my roommates had thrown. The entire living room was filled with people from church and the only place that we could sit was between the couch and the wall by the door, completely segregated from anyone else.

I was on the verge of passing out at this point, so I wasn't coming up with anything genius to say to break the ice here. A stand-up comedian who was popular when I was in elementary school stole all of my precious I-just-threw-up-and-therefore-feel-completely-healed time and now I mostly felt like dying. We sat in silence for a few minutes until Elaine walked by and gave me innuendo eyebrows. You know the ones.

I shook my head and motioned for her to follow me to my room, where I regaled her with my tale. Horrified and possibly scarred for life, she rejoined the party and I followed her to find my date talking to his roommate, who had just arrived. He stood up and told me that it was getting late and that he should probably head home. I wondered for a split second if we were even going to attempt a doorstep scene. But by the time I had figured out how I was going to diffuse the tension with witty banter, I heard the door closing and two sets of footsteps fleeing for safety.

Everyone in the party turned to stare at me. One of the boys piped up, "Weren't you two on a date? Why didn't he hug you!?" I shrugged and retreated to my room where I curled into a ball and made the noble decision to become a hermit. As Kenny kindly informed me when I told him my story the next Monday, "There's no coming back from that."

The Tale of Misery and Woe

I'm just going to preface this story by saying: Yes, it happened. Yes, my life is basically a mishmash of all the mishaps that have happened in every romantic comedy but with none of the romance. Yes, feel free to laugh at my pain. That's what this blog is all about. No, that was not sarcastic. And once again, yes, this actually happened.

Anywho, I got asked out on a date, which is always exciting. All I knew about it before hand was that we were driving up to Heber, which is a pretty cool drive up some windy mountain roads. It was a triple date, so we gathered the troops and then began the drive. Everything was going alright until we started going up those dang curvy roads. I don't get carsick, but this time I was feeling it. Add that to the fact that dates make me magically unable to conjure up witty conversation and we were left with a rather dull forty minute ride and it was probably my fault.

We stopped at a place called the Dairy Keen, which is apparently some famous burger place that everyone loves. We walked in and I was hit with the aroma of greasy diner food, which I was suddenly not in the mood for. I felt so incredibly grossed out by the prospect of hamburgers and fries, but I chalked it up to a recent healthy eating kick and pushed past my ill feelings as I ate. As I was forcing down the burger (which was somehow nauseating and delicious at the same time) I remembered that my roommate had been sick with the stomach flu recently. My chewing slowed.

"Are you ok?" my date looked somewhat concerned, probably because I could see the death of my dating life looming before my eyes. I assured him that I was fine and tried to talk myself down.

What are the chances of being sick on this date?, I thought, Horrible things like that only happen in movies.

Once I had sufficiently calmed myself, we were off again, this time to the bowling alley. And this bowling alley was the cutest thing I have ever seen. It probably hasn't been remodeled since 1950. I'm a sucker for random stuff like that. I kind of geeked out about it for a second. Then, I lost a bunch of games. For the last game, we started playing skittle bowling, which is where you assign each color skittle to a way that you have to bowl. Red means eyes closed, purple means through your legs, etc. So, my game got even worse. But, everyone's was terrible so it was cool. Until I got a purple skittle and tried to throw it through my legs but ended up smacking myself in the back of the thigh with a bowling ball.

If only that had been the most embarrassing thing to happen that night.

When we stood up to go, I was hit with the most terrible wave of nausea and stomach pain. I went into the bathroom, but the two other girls followed me, so I wasn't about to go kneel in front of a toilet with people around me. I was panicking. Should I wait around in the bathroom until they leave and then wait even longer to see if I throw up? I didn't want to disappear into the bathroom and leave him out there thinking who knows what. But then there was the windy mountain road that we had to take home. How was I possibly going to survive that? All I could think of doing was Lamaze breathing, so that's exactly what I did.

We were about to leave when my date asked the guy working there if he could get a picture of us. We all stood up in a line, he raised up the phone to take a picture, and then I threw up. Right there. On the floor. In front of everyone. As the others slowly came to terms with what had happened, I ran for the nearest trash can and went at it for another couple of minutes.

As I was lamenting my existence, I felt a hand rubbing my back. I froze. I looked down in absolute horror and saw my date's shoes. He was standing right next to me as I puked into a trash can in a bowling alley! Not only did I throw up while on a date with him, he is going to have the image of me puking right next to him seared into his brain for all eternity. The only way to get through this crushing sadness was to turn it into rage. If he's going to stand there, he might as well make himself useful and hold my hair!

When I was quite finished, I washed my hands, face, and mouth and we headed to the car. The bowling alley man asked if we wanted to take another picture. I could have punched him. Then I remembered.

I turned to my date and stammered, "Oh my gosh...The picture...Was I...? Did it...?"

"We deleted it," he answered immediately. "We didn't want to know. We didn't you to know. We didn't even look at it."

My friends have pointed out to me that I should have insisted that the picture be posted on the internet. I suppose I could have been a meme, which would have been pretty exciting. I mean, I might as well profit from my misery as much as possible, right? Also, looking on the bright side, I probably don't need to worry about throwing up on a date anymore. That could never happen to the same person twice, right?

Basically, they came up with the acronym so that we could have a cool name like Viper and therefore it made no sense to anyone. The name got changed to On-air Promotions, which is much more descriptive of what we actually do. However, everyone complained that our new name was too long, and it was shortened to Blue Ops, which once again makes little sense, but it sounds cool, so whatever.

We had already started calling Kenny "Señor Mustache" at that point and so he decided that we should all have sweet code names to match our new team name. I was the only girl at that point and so we figured that my nickname would be easy. We thought about Black Widow, but then remembered that it would probably be pretty overused in the coming months. Besides, what girl wants to be connected with Scarlett Johansson?

It's sarcasm, everyone. Calm down.

He decided to go with something related to black widows.

Way sexier than any woman capable of marrying Ryan Reynolds.

So, Hourglass became my code name. I thought it was pretty funny and people find themselves incapable of making up a suitable nickname for Mary, so I was kind of excited about it. A week or so later, Kenny mentioned my codename in the crowded lab.

"Uhmm. Why is her name Hourglass?" Duncan questioned him.

"Because she's the only girl!"

As the confusion mounted, I slowly came to realize why the name Hourglass might come off as a little strange if you didn't know the thought process behind it.

I quickly chimed in with, "It's because a black widow has an hourglass shape on them!" That was when Kenny realized what had happened.

"Woah! I am engaged! Everyone calm down!" Everything was clarified and there was talk of giving me a new code name, but at that point the entire circumstance was far too hilarious to change anything about it.

Defusing the Tension

I've been so busy lately that I haven't been able to post much lately (I apologize to my mom, who is probably the only person that reads this regularly). I also haven't been able to actually feed myself very often, which is far more regrettable. I've been frequenting the Twilight Zone for bagels, sandwiches, and other unhealthy overpriced foods on campus. I've been tempted on a daily basis by the mecca of cheap college food, but have yet to succumb to its cheesy allure.

My faux-Mexican weakness

I was in the long line at the Twilight Zone, trying to have all of my materials ready for the checkout line. I get so stressed out in fast-paced situations like that. After working at Disney World, I know how annoying it is when customers aren't ready after waiting in line for fifteen minutes staring at the menu. If you stand in a turkey leg cart line for twenty minutes and are expecting a churro, you deserve the sugarless disappointment, that's all I'm saying. I had my ID card, my wallet, the bagel, everything. I even had my money out and waiting.

I had to break a twenty, so I was anticipating the moment when I got that handful of change back. My preparations profited me nothing. The cashier handed me the change, with the coins on top (which is the dumbest) and I fumbled with it while glancing around nervously. I knew that everyone in line behind me hated me. The cashier hated me. I hated me.

The bills would not fit into my tiny girl wallet. I finally stuffed them in and reached up to grab my receipt with the same hand. I turned my hand to get the receipt and change came pouring out of the wallet I had been unable to close because of the stubborn bills. It seemed like the waterfall of pennies would never end as I glanced around nervously at the aggravated faces around me.

I have this terrible habit where whenever I do something awkward, my first instinct is to attempt to diffuse the tension by making what I think is a clever comment. Really, it just looks like I'm talking to myself. So, when the change went everywhere, I pretended to dive after a quarter and loudly said "Noooo! Laundryyyy!" No one laughed. They just continued to stare at me as I chuckled awkwardly, clutched my bagel closer, and made my escape.

Midfield Sucks

I was introduced to a new sport the other day. This is very unusual for me, but I loved it. It's called walleyball, and if you haven't tried it out, you really should.

I certainly wasn't a pro, but it was highly entertaining. It's one of those sports that you can't take too seriously, so it's perfect for people brave enough to be on a team with me. I texted my friend Brandt to tell him that my arms were sore. He replied with, "Haha, you don't play sports very much do you." The truth is, I have troubles with sports. That's really all there is to it. I love watching sports and I know the theory behind all of it, but it's the application of that theory that I have my troubles with. When I played volleyball at church, every few minutes someone would stop me, position my hands, and explain to me what I was doing wrong. I knew exactly what I was doing wrong, I just stopped physically functioning whenever the volleyball came within a few feet of my face.

I played soccer in high school, and usually it went something like this:

Ok, I'm just gonna run towards the ball. No harm there. Oh! Going the other direction. Ok, gonna follow it back. Shoot! There's a defender running at me! Kick, Mary, kick! Bah! My feet! Do I even have feet? The coach is yelling at me. What am I doing here? Who's idea was this? Oh, it's going the other direction again. Better follow it. Midfield sucks.

That's why I'd much rather sit around and tell these guys what to do.

And with the way they've been playing the Yankees lately, they haven't been listening to me.

Several months ago, a boy asked me to play volleyball with him and his friends one Saturday. I protested that I was terrible at volleyball, but he brushed me off with the "Oh, I'm sure you're fine" that I so dread. I tried a couple more times, but he simply wouldn't believe the deep truths I was throwing at him. So, because I liked him, I agreed to play volleyball.

When I got there, I realized that he and all of his friends had played club and school volleyball in high school and apparently got together to play volleyball rather regularly. It was an odd number as we warmed up and stretched and I was all ready to take one for the team and sit it out, but some fool showed up late.

But don't worry. My clumsiness saved me a few minutes in when I fell into the boy I was with and twisted my ankle. I was finally allowed to sit on the sidelines, as I did every time he and his friends played sports around me thereafter.

I try to keep it under control while writing this blog. It mostly pertains to my use of superlatives in conversation. I knew that I had a problem when I blurted out that The Goofy Movie was "like, my favorite movie!" False. It's good, but not that good.

The best Disney movie, for the record.

My over enthusiasm to categorize the world into "the worst" and "my favorite" sometimes gets me into trouble. A while ago I was in my ex-boyfriend's roommate's car on the way back from Salt Lake City. This roommate was a rather hipsterish young man, and therefore I felt the inexplainable urge to impress him at all times. We were listening to his music and a familiar song came on. I could finally prove my coolness to this trendy kid. "Is this Four Year Strong?" I piped up from the backseat.

"No, it's A Day to Remember. But, I'm impressed that you know Four Year Strong. Do you listen to them?"

This is where I made my fatal mistake. "Yeah! They're one of my favorite bands!"

False. I do like most of their songs that I hear, and I went through somewhat of a punk/screamo phase in high school, but they're far from my favorite band. I have one song by them on my iPod.

It's pretty sweet, but that's beside the point. My feigned enthusiasm excited him and he reached for his iPod. "Well, let's listen to them then! What's your favorite song? I don't know how I feel about their new album."

First of all, I completely blanked on the name of the one song that I definitely knew. Also, I have no freaking clue what their new album is like. I racked my brain for generic answers. Man, they're such sell-outs! or I feel like they've really gone back to their roots, ya'know? I mustered a lame, "Well, I don't really follow them that closely" and settled back into my seat to hear his lecture on how deep their music is.

That was pretty much the end of that conversation. I steered the topic towards literature and I totally schooled him there. English major, what!?

I typically have a strict policy against asking boys on dates, but I decided to deviate from it because it was a special occasion. Bad idea.

If you've never seen the Temple Square lights, Go. Right now.

Elaine and I walked over to my good friend Bradley's apartment. Elaine's purpose in coming was partly for moral support, but mostly to distract Bradley's roommates from what was sure to be an interesting conversation. We got there, and Elaine continually attempted to distract Brandt, but Bradley was paying far more attention to their exchange than to my attempts to divert him. I slowly sank into the couch as I realized that I was not getting anywhere. This boy was far too dense.

We sat there for fifteen to twenty minutes talking with no opportunities for my question arising. Then, there was a knock at the door. Someone else had come to visit Bradley and Elaine and I probably needed to leave. I realized that this was the moment. Now or never. I stood up and walked directly in front of Bradley. I asked him if he would like to go to the concert with me. He agreed to. It didn't take very long, but apparently Brandt was having a struggle of his own.

Brandt told me later that he had realized very quickly what I was trying to do. He ran to the door and blocked the entrance of the other boys, only able to conjure up lame small talk to try and slow their progress. As he tells it, I took ages to finally get the question out as he sacrificed his social respectability to the greater cause of my dating life. Poor Brandt.

The truly post-worthy moment came the night before the concert, when we were playing Mario Kart at the boys' apartment. There was a lull in conversation and Bradley turned to me and asked loudly, "So, who else is coming to the concert tomorrow night?"

"No . . . one." I stuttered, "It's just us."

"Oh..." He stared at me as everyone else squirmed in their places on the couch. The intensity of the race on screen seemed to dissipate to make room for the awkward tension that had filled the air. I didn't know what to do. I could explain that I had meant the outing as a friendly date instead of a romantic one, but the moment had passed and it would have drawn even more attention to my discomfort. Eventually, someone changed the subject and we somehow moved on from that crippling moment.

This was actually the first of two separate dates that I accidentally tricked Bradley into, but the second one doesn't make anywhere near as good of a story. We saw Unicorn City, and it was awesome.
I have a theory. I think that the reason that I get myself into all these awkward situations is that I lack a proper response when I panic. Most people choose to fight the situation, or run from it. I do neither, I curl up in a ball and lose the ability to think, move, or speak. Much like an armadillo.

My friend, Craig Danger, has been trying to set me up with a friend of his for some time. He's married, and so he shares the desire of all married people to get all of their friends to a similar relationship status.

A few hours before Mr. Danger and his wife were supposed to pick me up, he texted me and said, "Just thought I would tell you, I didn't present this to Bow-tie as a blind double date as much as I did like friend going to get food...Just to give you some context..." I assumed that he was hinting that I would need to pay for myself, and I was fine with that. Even if he hadn't been tricked into going on a date with me, I would feel weird about him paying for me, because he doesn't know me.

Well, we went to dinner and it was great. I was proud of myself for not doing anything too ridiculous, but I was congratulating myself too soon. The check came, and they had not split it in any way. We all felt slightly uncomfortable about where to go from there, so we ignored the check and talked for another fifteen minutes. Finally, Bow-tie just took the check and started walking away. Of course, as a man, Craig needed to run after him and argue about who was going to pay.

This manly ritual threw me off and I suddenly didn't know if I was supposed to go up there and offer to pay or not. I looked up at Mrs. Danger and jokingly said that I didn't know what to do. "Well, I'm certainly not paying for myself," she laughed, "Except the joke's on me, because that card goes to my account." As I struggled with my panicked paralysis, the boys paid the check. They came back and I could feel that the dynamic had changed, something had shifted, the awkwardness that I had avoided all night had finally set in.

I quietly took the lollipop that had come with the check and put it shamefully in my mouth. I sat there for a second and then realized that this lollipop was certainly going to turn my mouth blue. What have you done!? I screamed internally. But, there was no going back. Pretty much the only thing weirder than having a blue mouth, would be to stop eating that accursed lollipop. So, as we said our goodbyes, I looked like this:
