Joshua Saunders (b. 1981) is a hoarder and gatherer of the highest order. He spends many days sifting through the books and papers section of the Blue Hanger and various other trash bins/stores, searching for the pornographic drawings, decades-old advertisements, thrown-away documents and other pieces of disposable Americana that make up the bulk of his collages. His art occassionally incorporates juxtaposition, but more often relys on an interplay between the various parts that isn’t quite so obvious, but attempts to put a twist on an idea of America that may not have ever
existed. And can fuck for a really long time.

Some of Josh’s delicious work (more on his website):

Enclosed and mixed with love are the newest Italo Disco, Hi-Nrg and even Electro tracks that have been perking my ears within the last few months. A few old songs, like “Living in Japan” by Fun Fun, have also gained new appreciation. I never noticed that “Living in Japan” is so progressive!

Due to the fact that I’m going to be abroad for the rest of summer, I probably won’t be posting for the next two months in Kitsch Club. I’m taking a usb drive replete with all-time Italo favorites and a significant dose of cold wave, but life on the road might prove to be too time consuming.

So my new mix comes as if on vinyl, meaning you get two sides of twinkling bells, lovable choruses and Traktor backspins. Side A, “Spaghetti Dancer,” contains a few edits I’ve made in hope of modernizing a sound already hopelessly lost. Nonetheless, I enjoy these guilty pleasures; Italo Disco should be heard with ice cream in hand and full-blown camp theatrics, anyways.

Side B, “Alternative Diamond,” includes some unchartered territory: Raz & Kirlian Camera. Raz – Amor Puerto Riqueno has the classic chicago house sound, though I only included a small snippet of it because the latino-rico-suave vocals proved to be too much; what I wanted was its drums. As for Kirlian Camera, the instrumental dub version of “Edges” is great because it’s so cold. Peggy & The Pill’s “Nobody’s Bride” moved the remainder of my mix into progressively darker territories, and the two Kirlian Camera tracks I included (”Edges” and “Communicate”) are almost industrial, which is a departure from the warmer melodies I’m accustomed to.

Enjoy.

New Work by Corky Sinks
June 6th through June 27th Opening: Saturday, June 6th 10pm – 12am
MASS Gallery, 916 Springdale Rd. Austin, TX 78702

You dreamed about the same creep I did. – Tina, Nightmare on Elm Street

Sinks’ work examines the way bits of information are transferred from source to source and the space that exists between sources. As information travels, the space between each bit fluctuates, drawing representation nearer to the truth while distancing the two through editing processes, new discoveries, new technologies, and living language.

mardröm investigates the mythological creature, mara, and the popular horror series, Nightmare on Elm Street. Centuries ago, the mara slowly permeated Europe, taking on new forms in different regions as culture after culture adapted the story. Modern media innovations for entertainment and communication have compounded the spread of information, forcing parts of mara to be lost and expanded upon, spawning countless monsters, urban legends, and nightmares.

Corkey Sinks was born in Dallas, Texas in 1983. She received an integrated B.A. in Media Studies from the Johnston Center at the University of Redlands, CA in 2005. Shortly after moving to Austin in 2006, Sinks joined Okay Mountain and, in 2007, she became a founding member of the multimedia collective, Austin Video Bee.

Women & Their Work is proud to present The Medicine Show, a new interactive installation by Brooklyn/Texas based artist Lizzy Wetzel.

Last seen at Women & Their Work in a spirit-animal headdress conducting a bone painting ritual during Donna Huanca’s show last January, Wetzel is back with her own solo show.

Drawing from alchemy, mysticism, acid rock, supernatural phenomena and indigenous cosmology, installation/performance artist Lizzy Wetzel explores the concept of sacred space and the boundaries between one world and the next in The Medicine Show. In this interactive, multisensory sculptural installation, Wetzel transforms the gallery into two dreamlike realms, featuring an ambient desertscape giving way to a shrouded spiral chamber. Outside the chamber, the desert scene seems haunted by the sounds of drumming. Inside the chamber, visitors cross into a separate, black-lit world to experience a geodesic drum ritual performed by Wetzel and masked attendants. Ceremony, sand, cloth, mandalas, enshrined objects, lights, smells and sound all converge in The Medicine Show to forge a sensual, tactile interactive experience that places viewers in a heightened state as they cross the threshold between two mystically charged realms.

Born in Austin, Texas, Lizzy Wetzel received her BFA from the School of Visual Art at the University of North Texas in Denton.
“From May to August, Church of the Friendly Ghost presents a series featuring female artists who push the boundaries of art and music. Too rarely are experimental art and new music events in Austin female-centric. In order to temporarily reject this truth and spark a renaissance, the series will provide several evenings of performance from female artists.

The primary goal is to provide these artists with a space to expand their art form while providing the audience with an panoptic impression of work that some women are producing in Austin and points beyond. Lady Friends, stemming from the desire to experience female performance, will focus on media art, performance art, and music that is thought provoking and original. This series will include experimental bands, filmmakers, solo performers, and improvisers.

Additionally, CotFG aims to contrive a new point of ingression for the female arts community that coincides with a focused forum for discourse and networking. The series will culminate in August with our final show as an evening of improvisational works by an all female cast. Alissa DeRubeis and Amanda Lewis are the principal curators.”

Self-described Garage Synthers, conjoining a preoccupation with glitter-soaked visions of the cultural apocalypse – past, present, and future – with a faith in music’s ability to conjure visions that transcend physical reality; yet their songs are soppy with sensuous cravings, lighting up the listener’s chakra network like a pinball machine while linking the lowliest reptilian urges to a third eye caked in green shadow and batting a false eyelash – i.e., a pop band with both its rear in primordial muck and a mythical horn poking the galactic swirl.

***Years ago How I Quit Crack was rolling around naked on the floor in a drug addled craze sharking for invisible lost pieces of crack. Now she seeks redemption from Christ through cooing into her mic and falling onto her synth.
