It's been awhile since I posted anything and this a short review of the Xshot Pro Pole camera extender (selfie stick): I used the Xshot Pro Pole with my UltraProX Adventure Cam 8 action camera of which I am a dealer. The Xshot Pro Pole is of excellent quality and works very smoothly. Actually the only problem I have with the Xshot Pro Pole is it's cost but I am not a daily or even weekly action camera user either! I give the Xshot Pro Pole a 2 thumbs up rating...click for more information on the Xshot Pro Pole

Bowhunter's Checklist

When planning your next back country hunt what you put in your pack could make the difference between success and failure. When you are trying to decide on what to put in your pack you need to consider several things. One thing you need to consider is the weight of each item. You don’t want to overload your pack as this will make you less mobile with a heavy pack. I try and go with the lightest and highest quality items that I can. This allows me to keep my overall pack weight down, which allows me to hunt more effectively.

Here is the current list of items for this years hunting season. This list changes from year to year as I am constantly changing it to better my hunting efficiency. If for any I didn’t use one item during the year I evaluate it and decide if I truly need it. I also determine if there are any better versions of an item to change out. I am kind of a gear nut and am constantly researching items that could improve my pack list. I try and break my list into different categories to help me out with the evaluation process as well.

General Items

Head lamp

Extra flash light

License and tags

Stocking cap

Digital camera- include extra batteries and SD card

Game calls

Chap stick

Face paint- I like face paint over a face mask as I believe I am able to hear things better without the face mask covering my ears.

TP- Many of socks have come to their demise because someone forgot this item. I like to compliment the TP with unscented baby wipes for that oh so clean feeling.

2 Liter water bladder- You don’t necessarily need a bladder, but I find that I drink a lot more when you have one. Staying hydrated in the mountains is a must.

GPS- Not always needed if you know the area really well, but it is very handy for marking interesting things you might find along your way.

Duck tape- I wrap a 4 foot length of tape around my extra flashlight. This saves on valuable space in your pack.

Mole skin- Held in place with duct tape it seems to work pretty well for any hot spots that might develop.

Roll of electrical tape

Wind detector

Air activated heat packets

3-mil contractor bag- Use one for a rain poncho, pack cover, and a pack liner for when I am packing meat out of the back country.

Extra pair of wool socks- Keeping your feet dry can play a huge role in preventing blisters

Multi tool

Ibuprofen- For daily aches and pains.

Tylenol PM- to help you get a better nights sleep.

Bow

Extra D-Loop- It is not uncommon for the strangest things to happen when you least expect them to on a hunt. Whether you bump it wit a broad head or it starts to unravel, being suddenly loop less can ultimately shut down a hunt. Taking a simple 3 inch piece to retie could be a game saver. Could be the best 25 cents you ever spent.

Extra release

Allen wrenches-You should pack the key sizes that fit all the components on your bow. If a rest or sight comes loose your hunt could be over.

Extra serving material

Couple field points

Couple extra knocks

Survival:

Water proof matches

Lighter

Striker and steel

Fire starting material- You won’t be able to always find dry tinder to start a fire. I have a small package of commercial fire starting material. It will burn if it is dry or wet. And it will burn for a long time which will allow you to add materials to build you a good size fire.

Water filter- I like the ease and use of a water pump to filter water. Once you pump water into your container it is ready to drink. There is now waiting for a chemical to go to work. This is my main way to get clean water in the back country.

Portable Aqua water tablets- I always pack a few of these away in case my pump ever malfunctions.

Super Glue

Small first aid kit- At least something to clean cuts. Something to compliment the duct tape and super glue.

Kill Kit-Once success has been accomplished:

2 Knifes- One for the main work of breaking down and animal for packing out, and the other for the delicate work of capping and animal.

Sharpener- always have to have a sharp knife while in the back country.

Game bags

Rope- 50 feet of Para cord is plenty of rope to get the job done

Flagging material

Small pack saw

Latex gloves

This is my list and I am sure your list will be slightly different. Just remember to evaluate each and every item every year and determine if you truly need to be packing it around. You have to determine what level of comfort you are willing to live with while in the back country. Usually the more comfortable you want to be the more your pack is going to weigh. What you put in your pack could help you become successful this fall, or it could also save your life. Choose wisely.

Curry Pumpkin Soup

Prep time: 10 mins

Cooking time: 20 mins

Makes: About 4 servings

Ingredients

½ large onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

4 ½ cups chicken or vegetable broth

4 cups puréed pumpkin (or other squash)

1-2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

1 ½ tbsp curry powder

½ tsp sriracha (optional, but worth it)

Salt & pepper to taste

Garnish:

toasted pepitas

plain yogurt or sour cream

fresh cilantro (assuming you’re not one of those people)

The Nitty Gritty

Add your olive oil to a large pot, and heat over a medium temperature.

Once hot, add diced onion and cook until translucent (about 5 miNow add the minced garlic and cook for another minute or so.

Add chicken broth, increase heat to medium-high, and bring to a low boil. Note: depending on how fancy you want to get, you’ll achieve the smoothest consistency by passing the pumpkin puree through a chinois. If you don’t have a chinois, you can use the back of a large spoon to press the puree through a mesh strainer

Add the pumpkin, curry powder and sriracha to pot.

Stir and simmer until reduced to your desired consistency.

Sprinkle in salt and pepper to taste.

Now that you’ve reduced the soup, puree the whole batch with an immersion blender, or let cool until warm and puree in small batches in a regular blender.

Garnish with a dollop of plain yogurt or sour cream, pepitas and fresh cilantro.

A nice crusty rye bread goes really well with this one. Herbed goat cheese crostini are fantastic too. Serve and delight! I’ll catch you cats on the flip.

Idaho's wolf hunting season ended Sunday, but the hunt continues on private lands in the northern panhandle region.

Idaho Fish and Game spokesman Niels Nokkentved says anyone wanting to hunt wolves in the summer must have landowner permission.

In the 2011-2012 season, hunters shot 255 wolves and trapped 124 others. Biologists estimate Idaho had 746 wolves at the end of 2011.

Fish and Game Commissioner Tony McDermott tells the Missoulian that wolves are getting close to populated areas such as Coeur d'Alene.

The next wolf season on public lands begins Aug. 30, with wolf trapping beginning Nov. 15 in six regions.

In Montana, wildlife regulators are expected to set the dates and regulations for this year's hunt at its July 12 meeting.

South Fork of the Boise River

(1,730 cfs) - With the river dropping in the last few days, the dry fly fishing will probably suffer for a week or so. That being said, the nymph fishing has been outstanding. Try dropping a standard nymph under a big stone or sculpin and dead drift it. Once the fish have found new places to live and get comfy, look for a good caddis hatch in the afternoon. Also keep your eyes and ears open for some cicadas in the upcoming week. Salmon flies should start crawling out soon, too.

Recommended Flies: #4-#6 stonefly nymphs, #6 Sheila Sculpins, #14-#16 Guilde's Choice; #14-16 Copper Johns, #14-#16 Dirty Bird.

Silver Creek
Brown Drake fishing is upon us! From now until next weekend, the fish should be up eating these big bugs with vigor. Look for the duns to start happening in the early evening, with the spinner fall happening right at sunset. If you don't see any drakes, the PMD fishing has been good in the afternoon. Look for a good baetis hatch in the morning and a spinner fall later in the evening. Also, look for some big calibaetis in the stillwater early in the day.

Recommended Flies: #10-#12 Brown Drake, #16-#18 PMDs, #14-#16 calibaetis, #20-#22 Hackle Stacker BWO, #18-#20 Rusty Spinner.

Owyhee River
(249 cfs) - The Owyhee has been odd lately. It has been good, but odd. Nymph fishing has been outstanding, but the dry fly fishing has been very spotty. There are bugs all over the place, with very few fish eating them. Try casting a big calibaetis dry fly fairly close to the bank with an ant or beeetle. The warmer weather on the horizon should get the PMDs exploding. Nymph fishing with a caddis pupae and a PMD nymph has been lights out.

Recommended Flies: #18-#20 Split Case PMD; #14-#16 Bird's Nest, #8 Zonker Minnow; #14 Calibaetis, #16-#18 PT Nymph.

1. Although turkeys can’t smell humans, their eyesight is very keen. You must be in head to toe camo and use a face mask. Setup in the shade if possible. A camouflaged shotgun is a good idea.

2. Setup with your back against a large tree for safety and concealment. If you are right handed, position yourself at about a 90 degree angle to an approaching turkey. Your left shoulder should point at the turkey rather than sitting face on to the turkey. This gives you the most versatility to shoot.

3. If possible, locate Toms in the evening. You will hear them “cackle” and fly up to roost right before dark.

4. Turkeys will “shock gobble” at everything from a coyote howl or crow call to a horn honking! Use a “locator call” to locate toms in the evenings prior to fly up or in the mid morning. Then, go to your turkey calls once you are setup and ready.

5. In the morning, sneak in under cover of darkness, and setup as close as you can to the “roost tree” without spooking the turkeys (75 to 150 yards if possible). As daylight starts to break, give some light hen yelps (“tree yelps”). Once the gobbler answers you, call according to his response. You don’t want to jump all over him, but you can also be too timid. If he is liking your calls, keep him fired up.

6. Decoys can work great to distract turkeys coming to the call. You can use just hens, a hen with a jake, or we’ve also found a gobbler decoy (B-Mobile) to be very effective. Position the decoys where you will have a good open shot when the tom gets to them.

7. Learn to use a slate call, box call, and mouth calls if possible. Some turkeys will prefer one sound while others will like something else. This will make you more versatile and more successful.

8. Once hens get bred and start going to sit on their nests in the morning use this to your advantage. Gobblers will be out looking – this is when hunting mid-morning all the way through afternoon can pay off big.

9. Never wear or carry anything red, white, or blue when turkey hunting since these are the colors of a gobbler’s head.

10. When carrying decoys or a turkey out of the woods, drape them with fluorescent orange for safety.

Salmon fishing in Idaho will be over for the year when the fall chinook harvest season ends Monday, Oct. 31, on the Snake and Clearwater rivers.

- Pitch your tent or park your RV where there’s direct morning sun. Mornings are typically the coldest part of the day, and shady spots warm slower. Avoid camping right next to lakes and streams because colder air settles there at night.

- Have a good sleeping bag or add a fleece liner. Liners usually keep you warmer than adding a blanket over your sleeping bag.

- Check out the desert. The nights are cool, but the days usually are sunny and warm.

- Travel on roads suitable for your vehicle in any weather. You may encounter heavy rain or snow in the fall, which makes dirt roads sloppy and slick. If rain or snow are likely, camp near a paved or gravel road so you won’t get stuck.

- If the weather forecast looks iffy, camp at a state park or a place with electric hookups and bathrooms with running water. It’s a luxury to run your furnace in your RV and not have to worry about draining your batteries. A hot shower is also nice in cool weather.

- If you’re planning to camp at a Forest Service campground, call the local ranger station to make sure it’s still open. Some close after Labor Day weekend.

- Fall is hunting season, so expect to see hunters and hear gunshots. If you’re a non-hunter, it’s still safe to do your favorite outdoor activities, but wear bright colors so you’re easily recognizable

The season will run through Dec. 31 in Island Park and Beaverhead wolf management zones, through June 30 in the Lolo and Selway zones, and through March 31 in the remaining nine of the state’s 13 wolf management zones.

Licensed hunters may buy two tags per year. Wolf tags cost $11.50 for resident hunters and $31.75 for nonresidents.

Harvest limits are set in five zones — 40 in the Salmon, 60 in the Sawtooth, 25 in the Southern Mountains, 10 in the Beaverhead and 30 in the Island Park zones — to preserve connectivity with populations in other states.

Fish and Game will monitor the hunt daily. The seasons will close when the harvest limit for that zone is reached or at the season closing date.

To find out whether a wolf hunt zone is closed, call (855)648-5558 starting Aug. 30.

A wolf trapping season opens Nov. 15 and goes through March 31 in the Panhandle zone, except for units 2 and 3; in the Lolo zone; in the Dworshak-Elk City zone, except Unit 10A; in the Selway zone; and the Middle Fork zone.

All other zones are closed to trapping with the option of opening a trapping season in other zones upon commission review in January.

Details of wolf hunting and trapping seasons and rules are available on the Fish and Game’s website under big game seasons and rules at fishandgame.idaho.gov, and they arepublished in a brochure available at license vendors and Fish and Game offices.

The Idaho Fish and Game Commission has approved a new set of rules guiding public hunting and trapping of wolves in the state's forests and backcountry.

The rules and dates approved by the commission at its meeting Thursday in Salmon includes a few minor changes to the blueprint drafted by state wildlife managers.

Those tweaks include elevated kill limits in hunting zones in eastern Idaho and extending the hunting season in two northern hunting zones where the predators are blamed by outdoorsman for reducing elk populations.

The commission's approval means the general wolf hunting season will have no quotas in about three-quarters of the territory now occupied by wolves.

Officials say Idaho will manage wolves and the hunt so that their population remains above 150 animals and 15 breeding pairs.

Some early elk hunts open Aug. 1, most of them antlerless “green-field” hunts.

The early green-field hunts in seven elk management zones — Palouse, Weiser, Lemhi, Beaverhead, Pioneer, Snake River and Owyhee-South Hills zones — are meant to help landowners reduce crop damage, according to Idaho Fish and Game.

Early archery hunts also start Aug. 1 in the Snake River elk zone, and controlled green-field hunts also open in the Dworshak and Hells Canyon zones.

The green-field hunts are open only outside the national forest boundary and within one mile of cultivated fields.

They help reduce depredation problems and control populations causing crop damage by harvesting or discouraging animals in specific areas or portions of units, the agency said.

August hunts, however, bring concerns about waste. Hunters have an ethical and legal obligation to salvage the edible portions of their kill. But meat spoilage is an important concern during typical hot August weather, Fish and Game said.

The key to preserving meat is starting the cooling process quickly. Game animals should be skinned immediately and quartered in most cases and transported quickly to cold storage facilities.

Early season hunters may consider using large ice chests to keep game meat cool and clean. Removing meat from the bones also helps speed cooling.

Hunters must have a valid 2011 Idaho hunting license and tag in their possession, and they are encouraged to review the 2011 Big Game Rules for details.

Or go to the Fish and Game’s website at: http://fishandgame.idaho.gov.

Coincidentally, that's the same number Idaho set in 2009, but hunters only harvested 188 wolves here during that season. Montana has a smaller wolf population than Idaho. Official estimate is 556 in Montana vs. around 1,000 in Idaho, but some people argue there are more in both states. Idaho did not set a statewide quota for its wolf harvest, but will limit hunter kills in some areas.

Here are the details on the Montana hunt HERE

BOISE, Idaho — Idaho wildlife managers have released their rules for the 2011-2012 wolf hunt.

Idaho Department of Fish and Game officials announced Friday there won't be quotas in much of the state.

That decision will please those who believe wolves have multiplied beyond acceptable levels but anger wildlife advocates who fear Idaho will manage wolves irresponsibly.

There will also be a 10-week trapping season from December to mid-February.

The state says it will manage wolves so that their population remains above 150 animals and 15 breeding pairs.

Idaho has resumed management of gray wolves within the
state’s boundaries.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s rule delisting gray
wolves in the Northern Rockies and Western Great Lakes
took effect Thursday, May 5. The rule affects wolves in Idaho,
Montana, and parts of Washington, Oregon and Utah, but not in Wyoming.
Wolf hunting tags went on sale May 5 in Idaho. Read more!

Fly fishing The Upper Salmon River just below Stanley, Idaho. Lotsa steelhead solt in the river, using my ole standby #10 Adams and knockin' them dead! Averaging around 10 inches but what a blast! River is still a lil high and whitewater rafters are gettin a thrill especially over Shotgun Rapids and around the old dam!!! Please remember to practice "Catch and Release"
