This week we were be joined by Glenn Readus of The Chicago Crusader

and Maria Zamudio of the Chicago Reporter.

Plus, we talked with WBEZ’s Bill Healy about the Mother’s Day Parade tragedy in New Orleans. He was there. He shared his thoughts on the story, and the group discussed why they think it’s not getting the national news coverage that the Boston Marathon Bombing got.

<itunes:summary>On this installment of the Barber Shop Show, we updated two local stories that are probably being talked about at barber shops all over town: pending CPS closures and local sports.

This week, independent hearing officers reviewed Chicago Public Schools’ list of 54 slated closings. They oppose 13 of the proposed closings, saying those schools don’t meet state standards that warrant a shutdown. In addition to this, more and more questions are being raised about the savings CPS has projected from the closures.

Joining us at the shop to update us on all this was: WBEZ’s Linda Lutton

Later in the show, we got an update on what’s going on in local sports, particularly baseball and basketball. For that, we were joined by:

· WBEZ Sports Analyst Cheryl Rae Stout

· and Fred Mitchell of the Chicago Tribune

...as well as a couple of folks at the shop getting their hair cut.

Coming to you live each Friday at Noon from Carter's Barber Shop in Chicago's North Lawndale neighborhood, The Barber Shop Show is your weekly dose of real talk, straight from the shop floor. No punches are pulled and no topic is considered off-topic. Hosted by WBEZ's Richard Steele. Produced by Ayana Contreras and Engineered by Sarah Lu.

<itunes:summary>On this installment of the Barber Shop Show, we talked about the changes impacting riders of the CTA, including the Red Line south of Roosevelt being shut down until October 2013. There’s also a lot of changes around the new Ventra card, and the Jeffrey Jump (and early foray into high speed bus service). We also hear about proposed changes to bus service on 31st Street, that could impact residents in Bronzeville, Bridgeport, Armour Square, and Little Village.

Will all these changes amount to better, faster more reliable public transit in Chicago?

Joining us at the shop:
•	Jon Hilkevitch, Transportation Reporter for the Chicago Tribune,

•	Claudia Ayala, a Public Transit and Enviromental Justice activist with the Little Village Environmental Justice Organization.

•	and Brenna Conway, Campaign Manager at the Active Transportation Alliance.

In this issue, The Reporter is highlighting how harsher drug legislation is impacting communities. The Reporter’s own Angela Caputo tackles two facets of this situation: and the increasing number of convictions for drug-related crimes, and the growing cost to incarcerate those who are convicted.

We talk to Michael Flowers and Eric Ware. They are from a block in Chicago's Austin Community that has the highest concentration of convictions in the city. They are also trying to turn their lives around after years of selling and using drugs.

We also talk to Elce Redmond and Bob Dougherty, two people trying to help people who've made the decision to start over.

In this episode of the Barber Shop Show, we get down to what same-sex marriage really means for families, especially families with kids.

Joining us at the shop is Jim Bennett, Midwest Regional Director of Llambda Legal, Ray Koenig III, an attorney who specializes in estate planning for lesbian and gay folks, and Vernita.

Vernita is in a civil union with Pat. Vernita and Pat recently had an upsetting experience getting care at a hospital during a medical emergency. The consensus around the table is: it never would have happened if Vernita and Pat's relationship had the legal recognition that married people do.

Hosted by Richard Steele. Produced by Ayana Conteras. Directed and engineered at Carter's by Sarah Lu. Engineered in Studio 11 by Collin Ashmeade-Bobbit.</itunes:summary>

A Black female TV Meteorologist in Louisiana was criticized by a viewer on the TV station’s Facebook page for wearing her hair in a short afro. She responded to the viewer and ultimately lost her job for not following what the station called an “unwritten” code of conduct.

The goal is to help build more more diverse voices in Documentary Filmmaking here in Chicago (and ultimately abroad). More diverse voices means more facets of “the story” can be told.

We’ll also talk with youth from The West Side Writing Project who are both documenting and asking questions about the world around them. The program was featured in the Chicago Reporter’s Chicago Muckrackers Blog in an article by Megan Cottrell.
