Interlude VI: Roetomus and the New Games

Roetomus created the Historic War Games to restore his popularity and as a front to his true intentions. He always viewed the Games as a stepping stone to greater occupations. Others, however, had always seen the Games as an end in themselves. The Games have restored Roetomus’s popularity, and they carried his personal power to new hieghts. It, therefore, came as a shock when Roetomus announced plans to introduce new Historic War Games.

Roetomus addresses the Congress, “We will carry out an interesting game between the Grand Master La Valette and Gonzalo de Cordoba.”

Roetomus pauses as members of Congress speak among themselves, then he continues, “And in this game, I propose, they will use 30^th century weapons.”

The members of Congress sit silently. Altapola stands up and speaks forcefully on the matter, “This is an outrage. I refuse to participate and allow the TIMED to be used for such a purpose. It is dangerous and unnecessary. I…”

Roetomus interrupts, “You will do as you are told, or perhaps the TIMED will be taken out of your hands completely. I have permitted you to maintain control…”

Ledia interrupts, “Please. Roetomus and Leaders of Congress, everything is progressing too quickly. The TIMED rightly belongs to Altapola. For safety reasons, he must retain control. I think we can all agree on that. As for the new Games with past generals using our contemporary weapons, we cannot approve this.”

Gotal agrees, “Yes. Ledia and Altapola are absolutely right. It’s too dangerous. We already have 8 powerful ancient generals on Extross. Bringing more generals from ancient times to the 30^th century is too dangerous. They are not like us. They are too warlike and aggressive. If we arm them with our weapons, then we may ultimately find ourselves under their yoke.”

Jarneous says, “Respectfully, I disagree with you, Gotal. You may be a senior member of Congress, but your time and vision has past. We should support Roetomus and the Games. He has carried us to the threshold of appointment to Central Command. This is something every single Earthling can be proud of.”

Kapaul speaks, “I agree with Jarneous. His point is valid. I see achieving appointment to Central Command by no other means.”

Meanwhile, Roeotmus keeps silent. He knows it is best to allow his allies to argue on his behalf rather than waste his strength proving the obvious points. He listens as the argument sways back and forth. Finally, the argument swings clearly in his favor, so he speaks to end the discussion, “I have proposed a unique Game, but my opponents attack me at every turn. I only have the best of intentions for this Congress and Earth. If the Congress finds fault with my judgment, I will concede to its wisdom.” He sits down.

Kapaul says, “We should vote now and put this matter to rest.”

The Congress votes in favor for the New War Games. The Congress also approves additional War Game powers to Roetomus to expand them. Altapola is retained as Chief Technician on the TIMED.

Roetomus makes a speech thanking members of Congress and promising to carry Earth to great heights of respect and renown. He then approaches Altapola and hands him a list of ancient generals and warriors. “See to it that all these are brought to the 30^th century and properly trained with our weapons. I have many War Games planned for them.”

Napoleon's Offensive

Napoleon sends Massena to hold Hannibal while he deals with Hanstrubal. Napoleon dictates orders to Berthier, “II Corps and X Corps of Cavalry under Murat will command the left. Place the Mixed Infantry/Cavalry Corps I and III under Duvout on the right. I will form the center with V, VII, and IX Corps of Infantry.”

Berthier scratches notes while Napoleon continues speaking, “Advise Murat to send a detachment north towards the seaport to feign an attack on their ships there. Most likely they are not guarded. Hanstrubal will need to weaken his forces to protect them. We will crush Hanstrubal near the east seaport while he tries to protect his ships and maintain his lines of communication with Hannibal.”

Berthier asks about a practical logistical matter, “What about provisions? The supply trains have not yet reached the camp. The supply train met with difficulties crossing into Hannibal’s territory.”

Napoleon responds, “This land is plentiful. I’m not worried about provisions. Each of our troops has three days of rations on hand. If we switch to half rations, then they can march six days. It’s only five days of marching from here. Therefore, the troops can make it on those calculations. If something delays us more than a day or two of marching, then they can forage for the rest of what they need. Like I said, the land here is plentiful.” Napoleon dismisses Berthier to carry out his orders.

“Napoleon!” Ney exclaims as he approaches. He continues, “Do you expect me to play second fiddle to Massena. I heard you placed him in independent command of the Southern Army to attack Hannibal. My VIII Corps is under his overall command. I don’t want to take orders from him. We are the same rank.”

Napoleon responds, “Hannibal is cunning. I need my most experienced commander, who happens to be Massena, to face him while I crush Hanstrubal. You will obey Massena’s orders.”

Neys face turns red with anger, but he restrains his tongue. “Yes, Emperor. I will obey. I will honor my duty to you.” Ney rides away.

The next morning Napoleon’s forces begin their march, but a spy among them reports to one of Hannibal’s scout who lays in wait. The scout, unhindered by an army covers more ground than Napoleon’s columns. He, therefore, reaches Hannibal long before Napoleon’s units can reach him or his brother, Hanstrubal. Hannibal plans a counter stroke.

Alexander's Defensive Campaign

Alexander calls a council consisting of Cleitus, Philotas, Parmenion, and Ptolemy. Night has fallen and they anticipate a battle early in the morning. Alexander questions, “Adolphus has betrayed us. The enemy has us hemmed in to a bad position. Any suggestions?”

Parmenion the elder in the group speaks first. “I suggest we force the east pass during the night and make our escape. Cyrus holds it with a mere 50,000 men. We will have a five to one numerical advantage.”

Philotas agrees with his father, Parmenion.

Cleitus says, “If we must fight from this position, then I think forcing the east pass would be a grave error. According to my assessment, I think Cyrus can hold the east pass with 10,000 men for several days. If we try to force it, then we will endanger our rear.”

Parmenion speaks again, “It’s easy to criticize, but do you have an alternate plan?”

Cleitus answers, “Cyrus has 50,000 men holding the east pass, so he only has 200,000 for his main force. I think we should send 50,000 men to pin Caesar and 50,000 to pin Adolphus in their positions. With the remaining 150,000 men we can overthrow Cyrus, open a passage south, and reunite our troops at a stronger position where the enemies’ number will be a disadvantage to them.”

“A foolish strategy.” Parmenion remarks.

Alexander enters the discussion, “Cleitus, you are correct about Parmenion’s plan, and he is correct about yours. Parmenion’s plan is too passive, but Cleitus’s plan has one major strategic flaw. It will separate us from our only ally, Frederick. If we move south, then we cannot fall back on Frederick’s territory.”

Ptolemy asks, “Then what? Are we beaten? Do you mean defeat and retreat is our only course of action?”

Alexander answers, “No. We are not defeated.” Then he points to a local map of the area and speaks again, “Both Cyrus and Adolphus must contend with bad terrain. Cyrus will not be capable of using his chariots, and Adolphus will only be able to use infantry in those woods. Only Caesar can approach on a level field of battle, but he can only get as many as half his forces in that pass at one time.”

Parmenion points out, “We can only fight a defensive battle there. If we attempt to hold out and ultimately win, then they will wear us down by attrition.”

Alexander smiles and says, “I’m glad you noticed that Parmenion, because I intend to use you for the other part of my plan.”

“What?” Parmenion acts surprised.

Alexander explains, “The battle is only a cover. You will use part of our forces to build a bridge over that river, so we can extract ourselves after the battle. Ptolemy will help you. Cleitus will battle Cyrus and Philotas will battle Adolphus. I will fight Caesar in the main action.”

After the meeting, Alexander falls asleep unworried.

The First Campaign Begins

Frederick marches to meet Genghis. Alexander invades Cyrus’s territory. Adolphus and Caesar meet at the point where their territories connect, but they have no intention of battling each other. Napoleon invades Hannibal’s territory. Spies, scouts, corps of observation, and screening units abound.

Alexander leaves a unit to monitor his rear and cover his advance. He sends advanced units to confirm key routes and points to secure his advance through Cyrus’s territory.

Napoleon leaves a corps of observation to secure his rear as he fears Caesar may betray him. He also sends spies to monitor Caesar in case he faces him in the second campaign. As Napoleon crosses into Hannibal’s territory, he sends Murat with the Light Cavalry to determine Hannibal’s position.

After a while, Murat returns with information. He says, “Napoleon, we captured this Numidian solider. He informed me that Hanstrubal has half the army in the north near their main port, and Hannibal has the remainder of the army in the south.”

Napoleon shows skepticism, “Did you confirm the information?”

Murat replies, “Yes. I rode with the II Corps north and determined a force there. I could not verify its actual size, but it appears they are preparing a sea borne attack on Caesar. I sent the IV Corps south and they routed a cavalry unit but did not pursue in case Hannibal was laying a trap.”

Napoleon’s skepticism turns to excitement and he says, “We are closer to Hanstrubal, so we will attack him first.” He pauses then says to Massena, “Take VI and VIII Corps, form a junction with IV Corps and then pin Hannibal in his position. I will defeat Hanstrubal with the main army, then from a junction with your corps, and finally smash Hannibal’s forces in a single stroke.”

On the other side of Extross, Frederick comes upon an advance unit of Genghis. He engages them, defeats them, and pursues them to destruction.

Meanwhile, Alexander advances only to learn that Caesar and Adolphus are coming upon his rear. However, his advanced units have already made contact with Cyrus’s army, so he quickly withdraws them to re-assess the situation.

Cyrus and Talleyrand watch Alexander’s movements from a nearby hill. Cyrus smiles broadly and says, “Everything is going according to plan. I do not want Alexander to escape. I have sent two units to guard the east pass, my main army bars his movement south, the Sea of Contention will hold him on the west, and Adolphus and Caesar will prevent him from retracing his steps back north.”

Talleyrand nods affirmatively and comments, “750,000 men against his 250,000 men, three of the greatest generals in history against one. Alexander will not survive the first campaign.”

Talleyrand Returns to Cyrus

Talleyrand traveled unnoticed from Adolphus’s territory through Frederick’s territory to reach Cyrus’s territory. There he meets Cyrus again. Cyrus is anxious to see Talleyrand again, because his spies have recovered very little information since Talleyrand left on his mission.

Cyrus asks abruptly without small talk or any type of greetings, “How did your negotiations turn out?”

Talleyrand answers, “Things went well my King. Adolphus and Caesar have agreed to support your effort to isolate and destroy Alexander the Great in the first campaign. All that is necessary is to have Alexander come to us and for Genghis to keep Frederick tied up. Is your end secure?”

Cyrus smiles and says, “The project will be a smashing success. Genghis has agreed to an alliance and he will overrun Frederick quite easily.”

Talleyrand has always been a master of deception and self-preservation, so he never placed too much stock in certainty of allies. He had just proved that allies were fickle and self-serving at best. Of course, Genghis may very well overrun Frederick, but in war there are no guarantees. However, Talleyrand slyly manipulates his master with words that he knows Cyrus wishes to hear, “Yes. Of course, Genghis will keep Frederick occupied, I knew you would cover your end. I expect you also made an alliance with Hannibal?”

“Of course. However, we must keep the secret from Hannibal or he will abandon us or maybe attack us. He’s a wild card, so I don’t want to deal with him and Alexander in the first campaign. If I need to attack Hannibal in the second campaign, then so be it.” Cyrus states plainly. Then he inquires, “Tell me more about the arrangement you made.”

Talleyrand explains, “Adolphus and Caesar will face off to deceive Alexander. Alexander will believe that his rear is secure, when, in fact, Adolphus and Caesar will march on Alexander’s rear when he engages you. Alexander will be utterly destroyed. Three of the greatest commanders in history will match off against the Macedonian. He will not survive.”

Cyrus says, “Not that I need the other two. I simply don’t want to waste my resources early in the war.”

“Your wisdom will ensure you gain the ultimate victory.” Talleyrand says to please King Cyrus.

Friendly Relations Conceal Caesar's Hand

When Caesar returns to his camp after meeting with Alexander, he finds Napoleon waiting for him. Caesar greets him, “Napoleon, I’m glad you came, so I could meet you in person to affirm our alliance.”

“Thank you. I’m pleased to meet you. You were one of my childhood heroes.” Napoleon says quite innocently.

Napoleon’s charm disarms Caesar. Caesar glances away to conceal his emotion, then he asks, “How long have you been waiting?”

“Not very long. One of your officers advised me that you were meeting Alexander. How did it go?” Napoleon responds to Caesar.

“Bad.” Caesar admits. He continues speaking, “But I will meet Adolphus before I contend with Alexander on the field.” His admission of meeting with Adolphus before contending against Alexander is a clever device and deception to conceal his true hand while being on the level with his ally, Napoleon.

Napoleon does not realize the secret plan against Alexander, so the remark passes by him without further thought. Napoleon, however, knows Caesar has much to worry about, so he jokingly states the threat, “Hannibal also wants to cut your throat. If you have too many enemies, then they can overwhelm you.”

Caesar responds, “True. True. However, too few enemies will make you weak. Besides, I’m not worried about Hannibal, because you will crush him.”

Napoleon smiles and says, “Thanks for the vote of confidence. I did tell Hanstrubal that Hannibal should not attempt to cross my territory. Of course, that will bring him directly to me which will be good. I prefer a decisive battle.”

Caesar nods in affirmative, and then he says, Adolphus was foolish to ally with Alexander and Frederick. Their alliance will fall apart.” Caesar makes another clever statement as if to outsmart his unknowing ally, Napoleon. Caesar smiles at Napoleon.

Napoleon’s subtle intelligence picks up on Caesar’s behavior, but he cannot say anything to Caesar, because he does not know clearly what is suspect. Napoleon decides to play the fool for the moment. He says, “Then the odds favor us. Our alliance is small, but we are not widely separated, so it will be easy to cooperate.”

Caesar fully agrees, “Indeed. I think opportunity will favor us. This alliance may last us until the final campaign.” He indicates that they will be the final opponents.

Napoleon does not comment on a lasting alliance. He says, instead, “Whoever wins the first campaign will have many opportunities. Who will win? That’s the big question. Alexander or Cyrus? Frederick or Genghis? You or Adolphus? Hannibal or me? If, for example, Genghis defeats Frederick, then will he pursue him to destruction, turn south and assault Alexander or will he pass around Fredericks’s flank, leave a pinning force to hold Frederick and finally assault Adolphus?”

Caesar responds, “It depends on many factors. Genghis will make dispositions based upon the outcome of other campaigns, but perhaps Genghis may lose, and that would pose a different scenario.”

Napoleon asks a direct question, “Do you think your victory over Adolphus is certain?”

Caesar believes he will ultimately win the entire game, so he answers decisively, “Yes.”

The two leaders continue talking strategy and different situations. Meanwhile, Hannibal, on the other side of Extross, confirms an alliance with Cyrus.

The Noble Roman and Greek Meet

Plutarch, the great historian from antiquity, would have never predicted the outcome of a meeting between Caesar and Alexander the Great. Plutarch considered them to have no equals in history. Perhaps in his mind, he would have imagined a long discussion of strategy and statesmanship, but the deeds of the great baffle us. No one can predict them, and that is the essence of their greatness.

Near the border, where Alexander and Caesar’s territory connect, the two great leaders approach each other. Mark Anthony and Balbus watch from a ridge close by, and Cleitus, Ptolemy, and Haphasian watch from the opposite ridge.

The two leaders exchange greetings, and then Caesar says, “I wish to keep this meeting short, so I will be direct with you. I understand that you made an alliance with Adolphus, so I cannot ally with you.”

“Then we are enemies.” Alexander responds.

“Indeed.” Caesar replies.

Alexander does not say anything else. He mounts his horse, Buphealus, and rides to his men. He tells them, “Just as we expected. Caesar has decided against us.”

Caesar, too, returns to his men. He says, “The die is cast.”

The Plot Thickens

Adolphus and Axel return to their territory. Frederick returns to his as does Mark Anthony to Caesar’s. Mark arranges a meeting between Caesar and Alexander as he promised Alexander. Caesar makes his secret agreement known to Mark, and meanwhile, Talleyrand and Adolphus meet again.

Talleyrand speaks first, “Much time has passed since we last met.”

Adolphus answers, “Yes.” Then he questions, “I trust that all has gone according to plan. Will Caesar play his role?”

“Of course, my King. Caesar will contact you when the time is right.” Talleyrand says. Then he questions Adolphus’s end, “Please forgive me, but I am in the dark concerning what has transpired since we last met. My spies have advised me that you met with Frederick, Alexander, and Mark Anthony and Ptolemy, but I do not know the outcome of your discussions.”

Adolphus says, “I’m shocked at the extent of your network of spies. It appears you have spies in all of the camps.” Adolphus pauses to let Talleyrand respond, but Talleyrand gives only a silent gaze. Adolphus realizes it is fruitless to pry further, so he continues speaking and advises that an alliance between Alexander, Frederick and Adolphus has been secured and that a formal alliance with Caesar is not yet secure. Then he asks, “Alexander plans to meet with Caesar. Are you aware of that?”

“No.” Talleyrand speaks truthfully.

Adolphus is concerned about the secret arrangement. He asks, “What if Caesar betrays us?”

Talleyrand weighs the situation, and then says, “It will not benefit Caesar to betray our secret, because it will sow seeds of suspicion in Napoleon’s camp. Caesar cannot risk enemies on all sides. If he betrays us, then Napoleon will align against him. That would free Napoleon to attack him by land, Hannibal by sea, and, of course, Caesar would be exposed to an attack by you. I feel quite comfortable with our arrangement. I suppose he will reject an alliance with Alexander and then feign a campaign against you.”

“You better hope so, because if Caesar betrays us, then Cyrus will have to deal with Alexander on his own.” Adolphus states his position clearly.

Talleyrand says, “Fair enough.”

Alliance of Mistrust

“Alexander, I do not trust Adolphus.” Ptolemy states bluntly. He continues speaking directly to Alexander, giving him his assessment, “I spent many days travelling with him from Frederick’s territory, and he has made vague statements that give me a bad feeling. My gut tells me that he cannot be trusted. I believe he will betray us.”

Alexander thinks a moment, and then asks, “Has he done anything specific that betrayed your confidence during your journey?”

“No. Not exactly. However, some of the statements he has made seem out of place.” Ptolemy explains.

Cleitus asks, “And you always speak precisely?”

Ptolemy blushes. Then he admits, “No, but I still think we should be careful with any deal that involves Adoplhus.”

“Thank you for your assessment, but only time will time unless we get some direct proof that he is playing against us.” Alexander says. Then he turns to Cleitus and says, “Take the troops and horses out and drill them. They need the exercise.”

“Yes King.” Cleitus leaves as Frederick, Mark Anthony and Adolphus enter the tent. Ptolemy remains with them.

After introductions are concluded, Alexander respectfully asks about Axel. “Axel is not joining us today?”

Adoplhus responds, “He felt his presence was not needed since no prior arrangement was made.”

“Please send him my regards.” Alexander says to extend courtesy.

Adolphus nods to affirm.

Alexander begins since they are in his territory. He says, “Ptolemy advised me earlier today that both Frederick and Adolphus may join an alliance with me. Where exactly are we in these discussions?”

Frederick answers, “I made a pact with Ptolemy. As long as you honor it, then I believe we will both be secure.”

“I will honor the agreement.” Alexander says to Frederick, and then he asks Adolphus, “Can we forge an alliance?”

“I think we can, but I must be upfront with you. Axel’s negotiations with Caesar went sour, so I am concerned about what arrangements you have made with Caesar or what arrangements you plan to make with him.” Adolphus answers.

Mark speaks up before Alexander can respond, “Alexander and Caesar have not yet made arrangements. I believe it is in Alexander’s interest to consider an arrangement with Caesar over Adolphus.” Mark does not realize a secret arrangement between Caesar and Adolphus against Alexander has been forged already, so he reasonably believes Adolphus is at odds against Caesar. Mark continues to press his point by directing his tongue directly to Adolphus, “You are a fool Adolphus if you think you can contend against Caesar.”

Adolphus is somewhat rattled, but he suspects Mark is not in the know. He continues the charade for the sake of concealing his secret plans. “I spoke to a King, Alexander, concerning his agreement or plans for an agreement with Caesar. I did not ask for the opinion of a servant.”

Mark’s face turns red with rage.

Frederick adds force to Adolphus by saying, “An alliance with Adolphus wil serve us both well even without Caesar.”

Alexander shrewdly takes advantage of the situation between Adolphus and Caesar. He says, “A meeting with Caesar for my part makes sense. I think Cyrus is my direct enemy. I also think that an alliance between Caesar and our trifold alliance would be beneficial. In other words, I see no reason why I cannot cooperate with Caesar and Adolphus.”

“Perhaps.” Mark says.

Adolphus does not respond at first, but all eyes are fixed on him. He sits quietly for a minute, then gazing indirectly, he says, “Perhaps.”

Ptolemy looks at Alexander to suggest suspicion.

Alexander and Adolphus finally confirm an agreement of alliance. Alexander and Mark conclude an arrangement for a meeting between Caesar and Alexander. Then the meeting ends abruptly.

The Fog Clears

The journey from Caesar’s camp to Alexander’s camp equals that from Frederick’s camp to Alexander’s camp in distance, however, the terrain is more difficult between Frederick’s and Alexander’s. Ordinarily, Axel would have arrived much sooner coming from Caesar to Alexander than any message from Frederick to Alexander, but a delay on Axel’s part enabled Adolphus’s message to arrive first. It was addressed to Axel, and it instructed him to wait for him in Alexander’s camp and not to make any arrangements. The message did not contain any further instructions so Axel was still in the dark concerning the secret agreement between Adolphus, Talleyrand, Cyrus, and Caesar.

Axel and Alexander did meet to discuss historical events and others matters, but honored Adolphus’s request for a delay. They discussed various events that interested Alexander and his urge to explore and conquer the unknown. The New World was one such subject.

Finally Adolphus arrives and meets in private with Axel. “How are you my old friend?” Adolphus greets Axel.

“Fine, my King.” Axel responds. Then he says, “I was unable to make an agreement with Caesar. He appeared to be concealing something from me when we met. I’m not sure what, though.”

Adolphus blushes and explains, “Sorry about that. It seems that is my fault. Talleyrand and I met after you left and I was not capable of relaying any word to you. Obviously, Talleyrand spoke to Caesar before you. If things went as we planned, then Caesar has joined Cyrus and me in a plot to isolate and destroy Alexander.”

Axel responds, “That explains Caesar’s reaction. He is putting up a front.”

“Yes. He is definitely putting up a front as we are here.” Adolphus states.

Three Agree

Frederick and Ptolemy had concluded an agreement previously that ensures the cooperation between Frederick and Alexander as allies. Now they both intend to discuss arrangements with Adolphus.

Adolphus enters the tent and appears put off by Ptolemy’s presence. He says to Frederick, “I did not expect another interest to be here with you.” He then clarifies the meaning by gazing towards Ptolemy.

Frederick ignores the posturing and says rather bluntly, “Yes. He is here to meet with you on behalf of Alexander. I invited him to our meeting. I decided it best to have all our cards on the table.”

Adolphus answers, “Fine. I have nothing to hide.”

“Nor do I.” Ptolemy intercedes and then continues, “I can tell you Alexander’s interest and perhaps it will fit in with yours.”

“Go ahead.” Adolphus indicates to Ptolemy.

Ptolemy is a skillful diplomat as well as a great solider, so he asks Frederick for permission to prevent an offense, “Do you mind if I fill Adolphus in on our arrangement?”

“It’s fine with me.” Frederick responds.

“Thank you.” Ptolemy continues, “Alexander and Frederick have formed an alliance.” Looking at Adolphus, Ptolemy then says, “This alliance is not hostile towards you. Rather, it’s a defensive alliance to contend against Cyrus and Genghis.”

Adolphus questions, “What about Caesar?”

Ptolemy states, “I can’t speak for anyone else, but, ideally, an alliance with Caesar would protect Alexander more completely while he deals with Cyrus.”

Adolphus questions his role in such an alliance, “If we are all allies, I mean Alexander, Frederick, Caesar and me, then what role would I play? Do you expect me to attack Genghis by sea or play second fiddle to another? I assure you I will not play second fiddle. Perhaps securing Caesar will create more difficulties than advantages.”

Frederick understands Adolphus’s line of reasoning, and he states, “If I must choose, then I prefer an alliance with you, Adolphus, rather than Caesar. Your geographic position is more favorable to the alliance. At least from my point of view, such an alliance would favor all three of us as long as we cooperate together.”

Ptolemy agrees, but adds, “It does appear the more favorable, but Alexander will have to approve the exclusion of Caesar. I can only make alliances on his behalf. I hope you understand.”

Frederick says, “Then let’s go and meet with Alexander in person.”

Adolphus agrees and says, “If we can secure an alliance between us, then Caesar will pose no harm to us. I assure you that I can deal with him.”

A Misunderstanding

Caesar debates the situation he faces. He is waiting to meet with Axel, Adoplhus’s diplomat. Caesar talks to himself. “I wonder if Axel knows that I have already met with Talleyrand? If he does, then our meeting will be pure pretense for prying eyes. If Axel is unaware of my meeting with Talleyrand, then perhaps Talleyrand has deceived me by overstating his hand. Either way, it will be unwise for me to reveal my meeting and agreement with Talleyrand to Axel. I must keep my plans secret. Besides, I can either use or dispense with an alliance with Adolphus as opportunity dictates.”

Balbus enters Caesar’s tent. He announces Axel. Axel enters, and Balbus leaves Caesar and Axel to their business. At first, Caesar acts coy, and he talks only about Roman history. The two great men mostly discuss The Punic Wars and their effects on the history of the Western World thereafter. Finally they move on to the current issue of an alliance.

Axel asks Caesar, “If you make an alliance with Napoleon as my sources have indicated, then do you plan to attack Hannibal by sea or pass through Napoleon’s territory and attack Hannibal by land?”

This probing question indicates to Caesar that Axel is unaware of the secret agreement he made with Talleyrand on behalf of Adolphus. Caesar quickly gathers that he has the upper hand in the negotiations. He is pleased, and replies, “If weather and my security situation permits, then I will attack by sea.” Caesar wishes to get Axel to reveal as much as possible, so he continues by asking, “Who does Adolphus plan to attack? Is he at odds with Frederick or Alexander, or do you wish to perceive my dispositions to attack me?”

Axel feels compelled to protect Adolphus. He states his position clearly, “Caesar. I came here to meet you in earnest. I sense you are not on the level with me. Perhaps these negotiations are not the proper course for us.” Axel then sits silently to give Caesar an opportunity to relent, and to recover the negotiations.

Caesar does not appear moved to recover them. He says, “Perhaps you are right, and we should rejoin our former conversation of history instead of negotiations. You are subtle and intelligent just as I am, and a discussion of history seems more appropriate for us at this time. But please, Axel, I hope there are no hard feelings that we could not reach an agreement.”

Axel skillfully saves face with his reply, “Of course not Great Caesar. We must all prepare and protect our interests as best we can, for we are at war. It is true; war makes men enemies when otherwise they would be friends.”

Caesar replies, “Indeed.”

Inconclusive Meeting

Alexander’s best friend, Hephaestion, enters Mark Antony’s tent. He says, “Alexander will see you now. He is outside exercising. You will see him on the plain.” Hephaestion points up to indicate where he is talking about.

Hephaestion leaves and Mark walks toward the plain alone. In the distance, Mark notices someone on a chariot. The man leaps off at full speed and then quickly remounts. Mark says to himself, “The legend is true. That must be Alexander. I never believed the stories about his physical power.”

Alexander completes his exercise. He approaches Mark and speaks, “You appear baffled, my friend.”

Mark admits, “I am somewhat star struck. I read stories about you when I was a child, and now I am seeing you. This is like a strange dream to me.”

Alexander lightens the mood with a bit of humor, “Then I suppose I don’t need an introduction?”

Mark blushes, “Of course not. I’m impressed with your physical feats during your training. Honestly though, when I read stories about you in my childhood, I never believed them all. But now I see the stories are true.”

Alexander admits, “Yes, I read the stories too when I first arrived here. I wanted to see how history had treated me. Mostly they are true, but I found some embellishments.”

They walk along and discuss various matters of history. Then Alexander says, “I, also, read that the Romans made an interesting statement about me.”

Mark questions, “Was it something Caesar said?”

“No.” Alexander replies. “It was a general saying. It was to the effect that I would have not been invincible if I had fought against the Romans.”

Mark explains the origin of the saying, “That saying emerged when Pyrrhus the Great attempted to wrest southern Italy from Roman control. It encouraged us to fight and expel him.” Mark, however, does not apologize for the saying.

Alexander smiles and says, “What is the Roman opinion now?”

Mark takes an evasive position, “That’s a good question. Of course, the Romans are a martial people, but an alliance may be to our mutual benefit. What is your opinion?”

“If the conditions are right, then we may be capable of coming to terms. I would prefer to speak to Caesar to finalize any agreement.” Alexander speaks his mind.

They have returned to camp by this time, and they enjoy some wine and conversation without any further negotiations.

Hanstrubal and Napoleon: Tensions Rise

“Joseph! You made it back safely.” Napoleon embraces him.

Joseph responds, “Yes, and with good news. Caesar is our ally. He wishes to meet with you also.”

Napoleon expresses his approval of his brother’s efforts, “Great. The odds are in our favor. This is good timing, too, because I have a meeting with Hanstrubal today.”

“What do you plan to tell him?” Joseph questions.

Napoleon states, “He cannot pass through our territory to attack Caesar, and attacking Caesar be sea will be an error, also. I think he will understand.”

Joseph smiles and then says, “Ah. He will be angry, but for now, I need to get some rest. The journey tired me.”

“By all means. You get some rest, but later I want to talk more about Caesar.” Napoleon departs on that note and walks over to his guest’s tent where Hanstrubal waits. Napoleon enters the tent.

Hanstrubal gets up. He has been waiting for several hours, because Napoleon had wanted to talk to Joseph first. Hanstrubal says sarcastically, “Thanks for not making me wait very long.”

Napoleon brushes off the comment. He explains, “My brother had just returned, and it was imperative I speak with him.”

“Where did he return from, Caesar’s camp?” Hanstrubal’s spies had not intercepted any news, but his gut told him the truth. His gut also told him that Napoleon had made up his mind before their meeting.

Napoleon does not answer the question. He instead attacks from another line by asking his own question, “Has Hannibal already made arrangements to attack Caesar?”

Hanstrubal answers evasively, “Of course we will attack someone, and the Romans are a top priority to the Carthaginians.” Hanstrubal shrewdly stops speaking to let Napoleon break any deal they could have achieved.

Napoleon acts shrewdly too. He advises, “It will be unwise if Hannibal attacks by sea.”

Hanstrubal does not deviate from his plan to not offend Napoleon, even though his gut tells him there will be no alliance between them. He asks, “Are you offering to allow Hannibal to pass through your territory unmolested?”

The tension in the tent and between them could be cut with a knife. They both sit silently for a moment. Napoleon gazes steadfastly at Hanstrubal, and then he says to him, “That would be equally unwise.”

Hanstrubal says, “I assure you, Napoleon, you are the fool. The lack of wisdom is on your part. I can tell this meeting is fruitless. Please excuse me now.”

Napoleon does not attempt to correct the exchange. He says to Hanstrubal, “By all means, I expect you to leave my camp immediately.”

Hanstrubal leaves. His spies report all their findings to him. He returns to his camp and reports to Hannibal.

Caesar and Joseph

“Joseph. Wake up.” A voice calls. “Joseph.” The voice calls again.

Joseph rouses and asks while yawning, “Who’s there?”

“It is me, Caesar.”

Joseph asks, “The time? What time is it?”

“Four in the morning.” Caesar responds. “Are you ready for breakfast?”

Joseph was not expecting the early morning wake up. He replies, “Yes. Yes. Please, just give me a minute.”

Caesar returns to his tent. Joseph falls back to sleep, but wakes again after a few minutes. He dresses very quickly and looks outside of his tent. No one is there. He questions himself, “Was it a dream?” He looks around a bit, then he sees a light coming from Caesar’s tent. He walks over and enters.

Caesar looks up from his map. “Please enter.”

Joseph looks around and comments, “No breakfast?”

“I like to start early. Breakfast will be here soon enough.” Caesar tells him.

“Yes. I see you have the same work ethic as my brother, Napoleon. What are you planning?” Joseph comments.

“I was interested in what you told Balbus. He advised me that Napoleon wants an alliance with me. Is this true?” Caesar asks directly.

“Indeed. It is true Caesar. Napoleon is concerned with Hannibal. After all, he believes Hannibal will be a menace.” Joseph states.

Caesar grins. A servant enters with breakfast. Caesar says, “Let’s eat now.” Caesar then diverts the conversation to small talk. Joseph does not mind the change.

After the meal, Joseph mentions that the area reminds him of Naples. Caesar says, “Don’t get any big ideas about acquiring it though, I am rather fond of this territory.”

Joseph recognizes the humor, “Oh no sir. Not me. Napoleon is the conqueror, not me.”

They spend the day together. Caesar asks him many questions, mostly of history related to the Napoleonic Age and The French Revolution. At the day’s end, Caesar confirms an alliance with Napoleon. The next day Joseph leaves to return to Napoleon.

Talleyrand and Caesar

Night falls on Caesar’s camp, and Talleyrand lurks in the darkness. A Century approaches Talleyrand. He questions, “Who goes there?”

Talleyrand speaks, “Kind guard, I mean you no harm. You can see I am lame. I need to speak to Caesar on an important matter of state.”

The guard looks him over and then says, “It is night and Caesar sleeps. You should leave and return tomorrow. Otherwise, I will throw you in chains, lame or not.”

Talleyrand does not back down. He replies, “Perhaps you can speak with your superior. I assure you, Caesar will be pleased with your initiative. Besides, if I leave tonight, then tomorrow will be too late. If you imprison me or let me leave, then Caesar will miss a great opportunity. It’s your choice, of course.”

The Century thinks a moment. He then says, “Come with me. I will see what I can do.”

They go to a Centurion, the Century’s superior. The Century speaks to the Centurion in a low voice. Talleyrand stands in the background. Finally, after some discussion the Centurion leaves. The Century advises Talleyrand that the Centurion will try to make an arrangement, but makes no promises. Later, the Centurion returns with Caesar at his side. Caesar dismisses both the Century and Centurion with orders to remain silent about the event.

Talleyrand introduces himself. Caesar respond, “Yes. I know who you are, but I do not know why you are here. Joseph is here also. What is the meaning of this late night encounter?”

Talleyrand answers, “Great Caesar, neither Napoleon nor Joseph know I am here. Napoleon exiled me from his camp.”

Caesar interrupts, “That is unfortunate for you, but why are you in my camp?”

Talleyrand says, “You have a clear intelligence, so I will not attempt to deceive you. I will present my case and you can decide for yourself if it interests you.”

Caesar responds, “I always decide for myself, deception or not.”

“Yes, of course. Anyway, I am working for another party, and that party wishes to isolate Alexander. They wish to secure you in a secret alliance.” Talleyrand explains without giving away too much. Talleyrand knows the danger. He is close to Napoleon’s territory, Joseph is in Caesar’s camp, and Talleyrand does not know what arrangement Joseph has made with Caesar. Also, Talleyrand does not know how Caesar will react.

Caesar sits down and thinks to himself. Talleyrand may be a plant by Napoleon to determine if I will be a loyal ally to him, but why would Talleyrand arrive before Joseph had actually secured an alliance with me. Caesar decides that Talleyrand must, in fact, be employed by another party. He asks Talleyrand, “Who are you making the arrangement for?”

Talleyrand is confident that he can secure Caesar now. Talleyrand’s special gift has always been to read people, and he sees in Caesar the flaw of overt desire for power. The desire for power rules the mind and the mind such influenced can be swayed by those who are skilled in the manipulative arts. Talleyrand says, “Cyrus is my master and Adolphus is our secret partner.”

“You have given away your hand so early. I thought you would be more elusive, more skillful. I now have the power to destroy your alliance.” Caesar brags.

“Yes, but if you ally with Alexander, then Adolphus will attack you.” Talleyrand retorts. Talleyrand has given away his hand early to control Caesar’s reaction. Talleyrand knows the statement will excite the fury of Caesar, and this is exactly the reaction he wishes Caesar to make.

“Don’t bother with threats. I will conquer whoever opposes me.” Caesar replies.

Talleyrand can now play the submissive role and gain Caesar. Talleyrand says, “No, no. I did not mean to threaten you, Caesar. I only meant to indicate that you have the most favorable position. You can pick the fight of your choice. If you make an alliance with Cyrus and Adolphus, then the advantage is clearly yours.”

Caesar feels confident that he has won the exchange. “Yes. I agree. I will join the secret alliance. Tell Adolphus that I will contact him when the time is right.”

Talleyrand and Caesar finish on a more toned down note. Afterwards, Caesar returns to his tent and Talleyrand leaves unnoticed into the darkness.

Balbus and Joseph Meet

“King Joseph, it is nice to meet you.” Balbus speaks as he approaches.

“I’m honored to meet you, too.” Joseph responds in kind.

Balbus makes small talk, “It’s strange how our fates have crossed, don’t you think?”

Joseph questions his meaning, “How so? We are all out of our normal waters.”

Joseph’s simple perception takes Balbus by surprise. He expected that the brother of Napoleon, so great a man, would quickly discern his reference. Balbus thinks to himself, this is certainly not an intellectual equal. Balbus then explains to Joseph, “I was born in the region you call Spain, but in my own era, I rose to be a Roman Knight. In my time, not even many Romans achieved that rank. While you, on the other hand, came from an Italian family that grew up under French rule, but later in your own time, you became the King of Spain. I do not think many Spaniards ever achieved so much.”

Joseph smiles and says, “Yes. I see what you mean.” Joseph lets down his guard. Joseph then speaks freely as if to a friend, “My brother wishes for me to make an alliance with Caesar. All these arrangements have me frustrated. I would prefer to be in my own time. Business is my strong suit, not war. Do you think it is possible?”

Balbus senses he can make any arrangement he wants. He, therefore, decides to delay Joseph and let Caesar seal the deal. He says to Joseph, “Anything is possible. Perhaps you should rest now. I’m sure you are tired from your journey. I will speak to Caesar on your behalf.”

“Thank you, Balbus.” Joseph replies and then enters his tent.

Balbus returns to Caesar. “Caesar, I have good news. Napoleon wishes to ally with you.”

“That was quick.” Caesar is amused.

Balbus states to Caesar, “You will like Joseph. He is simple and direct. I told him that I would speak on his behalf.”

“Very good. I wish to meet him in the morning. Go and let him know.” Caesar orders.

“Yes Caesar.” Balbus leaves.

Frederick and Ptolemy

Ptolemy, under Alexander’s orders, has arrived in Frederick’s camp in order to make an alliance if possible. Ptolemy watches as Frederick drills his soldiers. Ptolemy comments to his servant, “Stunning! Not even Alexander has that much control over his troops.”

Frederick drilled his troops all day until they could barely stand. At nightfall, Frederick summons Ptolemy to his tent to discuss Alexander’s intent.

Ptolemy enters the tent. He says, “You are truly a great general. I’m pleased to meet you.”

“Thank you. I’m glad you came.” Frederick replies.

Ptolemy questions him, “How do you obtain such iron discipline over your troops?”

“Prussians are brave and strong. They take well to drills, but if I stack a little they get out of hand.” Frederick answers and then he questions, “Doesn’t Alexander have a disciplined army?”

“Of course.” Ptolemy blushes as he answers. “Alexander is a great leader and his troops follow him with zeal, but he has a different style than yours. You remind me of Alexander’s father, King Phillip.”

“Yes, I see your point. All leaders and armies differ in character. Take for instance the Mongols under Genghis. They are fluid and very organized and vicious. They think, but my men only follow.” Frederick notes the differences of leaders and men.

Ptolemy perceives an opening and asks, “Do you think you will face Genghis first?”

“Yes.” Frederick says plainly.

“What do you make of Cyrus, Alexander, and Adolphus? They all border you too.” Ptolemy observes.

“Alexander sent you to make an alliance, correct?” Frederick asks.

“Yes. He expressed a desire to ally with you.” Ptolemy answers.

“Then he has it. If Genghis gets loose from his little corner of the world, then he will likely overrun all of us. I’m the only one who can stop him.” Frederick comments arrogantly.

“Are you confident of your relations with Adolphus?” Ptolemy asks.

“I haven’t made any arrangements with him yet. I am concerned though. If Cyrus and Alexander face off, Genghis and I battle, and Hannibal and Napoleon face off, then that leaves Caesar and Adolphus. If they battle each other, then there will be nothing for me to fear, but if they ally, then the overall situation can become volatile.” Frederick explains his ideas. He continues, “Adolphus and Caesar are wild cards in my opinion.”

“No matter what, as long as there are more than two opponents in this game, then Alexander will not attack you. You are a friend.” Ptolemy states, “If need be, you can fall back on Alexander as a reinforcement.”

Frederick extends his hand to complete the deal, “And Alexander can count on the same from me.” Frederick asks him to stay a few days.

“I wish I could, but I must meet Adolphus before I return to Alexander’s camp.” Ptolemy graciously declines.

“Then it is settled. You will remain.” Frederick says, “As Adolphus will arrive in my camp tomorrow.”

Talleyrand meets Adolphus

Talleyrand departed from Cyrus’s territory and passed unnoticed through Frederick’s territory to finally arrive in Adolphus’ territory. He sent his servant ahead of him to make a secret meeting with Adolphus. Adolphus was receptive to a meeting.

Talleyrand arrives at the appointed time and place. It is dark and he enters a dimly lit tent set up for their purposes. He is alone, but soon Adolphus arrives. Adolphus enters the tent. He gestures to Talleyrand and offers him a seat. Adolphus speaks, “We can speak freely here. Why have you arranged a secret meeting?”

Talleyrand answers slyly, “Why have you admitted me?”

Adolphus replies, “Fair enough. I have read many books about you since Roetomus brought us here. You are a gifted diplomat, and I am interested in your business with me. So why are you here?”

Talleyrand replies more directly now, “I will be honest with you, King. Napoleon exiled me. Another party has employed me. They wish to make a secret alliance with you to isolate and oppose Alexander.” Talleyrand then stops and remains silent. Like a good salesperson, Talleyrand knows that if Adolphus speaks first, then he can gain him. However, if Adolphus does not buy into the arrangement, then Talleyrand’s entire task may fail. Everything hinges on Adolphus now.

Adolphus is no fool. He mirrors Talleyrand. Neither of them move or speak for a great while. Adolphus thinks to himself. This is a decisive moment. Is this a trick conceived by Napoleon and endorsed by Alexander? If so, I could be isolated in the first campaign. I wonder though, if this is not a trick, then who sent him?

Talleyrand sits still. He looks almost lifeless. His soul is twisted and corrupt. His mind is filled with treachery and deceit, but Adoplhus is a man of action as well as intellect and finally he speaks. “Talleyrand, who sent you?”

Talleyrand is confident now. He says, “Cyrus.”

“It makes sense to me. Cyrus wishes to isolate Alexander for the first campaign. Who else knows of your plan?”

“No one. It is essential that the alliance be kept secret from any formal alliance that Cyrus makes.”

Adolphus perceives the intent and voices it, “I see. You wish for me to make an alliance with Alexander, but in secret I will support Cyrus when the time comes. Who else will be involved or will we act alone?”

Talleyrand explains what he thinks will happen, “I think Frederick will ally with Alexander, so that Frederick can deal with Genghis. I also believe that Frederick will try to ally with you to secure his rear. Therefore, the odds are that Alexander will wish to ally with you as well. It seems apparent that you will face Caesar in the first campaign. At least for our purposes, it will appear that way.”

Adolphus smiles and says, “So you want to bring Caesar into out secret alliance.”

“Yes. I hope that we can. If not, then this whole venture may be in vain.”

Adoplhus states, “I’m apprehensive, but I agree. However, if Caesar cannot be brought on board, then Cyrus and I will be in a dangerous situation since our formal alliances may fall apart and leave us exposed on multiple fronts.”

Talleyrand and Adolphus agree to meet again after Talleyrand speaks with Caesar. Afterwards, Talleyrand limps away into the night.

Hannibal and Hastrubal

“I cannot believe it, brother. Nero defeated and beheaded you. That filthy Roman. I will not be capable of preventing it.” Hannibal says to Hastrubal.

“My brother.” Hastrubal comforts Hannibal, “Do not be down hearted. That is another place, another time. It is our true timeline, and we cannot alter it. We are here now and here we will fight and conquer together.”

Hannibal shakes his head, still unwilling to accept his historic fate. He says, “Carthage destroyed by Rome, I must accept that fate. I tell you brother, that may well be our fate in our true timeline, but here, I assure you, no Roman will be left alive. I do not care about Roetomus and the rest of this game, but rest assured, Caesar will die by my hand.”

“Yes, Hannibal. We will do our best, but Caesar is as cunning as you. He escaped Sulla’s wrath, allied with Crassus and Pompey, conquered Gaul, and ultimately defeated his former alley, Pompey, during the Roman Civil War.”

Hannibal strokes his chin. “We need to plot our course carefully. I am more concerned about Napoleon in the first campaign rather than Caesar.”

“Why?”

“He is an opportunist and he will gamble based on the odds. He can accept or refuse an alliance with me based on the disposition of Caesar.” Hannibal notes.

Hanstrubal asks, “What about Cyrus? He is on our east border.”

Hannibal replies, “He has his hands full with multiple enemies on his borders. I think we can keep him out of our hair by an alliance. In the meantime, though, I want you to go and meet with Napoleon. Make an alliance if you can. If not, then determine his disposition.”

Caesar's Arrangements

Caesar meets with Mark Antony and Balbus. His clear intellect immediately sees the situation he will face. He says, “Hannibal will attack us at some point.”

Mark shows consensus and says, “Probably by sea.”

Balbus adds, “Only if he allies with Napoleon and Cyrus. He is bold, but not a fool.”

“Yes. I know. He crossed the Alps against great odds, but he always secured allies where he could. He managed to outwit the Dictator Fabius and crush every Roman army that was sent against him from the moment he entered Italy and until he laid siege of Capua four years later.” Caesar reflects Hannibal’s historic campaign against the Romans.

Balbus concludes it by saying, “And it took another 11 years to compel him to leave Italy.”

Caesar then points to their Extross Map and says, “Napoleon will fight either me or Hannibal in the first campaign. I think we should ally with Napoleon now to avoid the possibility of a campaign against Hannibal by sea and Napoleon by land. If Napoleon faces Hannibal, then we can neutralize any northern or eastern threats from Alexander or Adolphus. If we secure either Alexander or Adolphus along with Napoleon, then we will be secure.”

Caesar then says, “Mark, you will meet with Alexander, Adolphus and Frederick to discern where we stand.”

Mark questions, “Should I arrange any personal meetings with you?”

“Use your judgment, but I don’t think it will be necessary.” Caesar says to Mark, and then, directing his attention to Balbus, he says, “King Joseph is in camp and I want you to meet with him. He is Napoleon’s brother.” He dismisses them at this time.

Cyrus and Genghis 2

Genghis arrived unexpectedly and now Cyrus is uneasy. Genghis Khan, however, realizes that an alliance with Cyrus will benefit him and allow him to direct his attention towards Frederick. This is the same method he used to conquer the steppes and, ultimately, Asia. He would neutralize one enemy, and then attack another. Genghis wanted to gain the moral ground against Cyrus, but now he relents to sow the seeds of friendship.

“Thank you, Good King, for the invitation to visit you.” Kahn says to Cyrus. He continues, “It is an honor to meet the first King of Asia.”

“Thank you, Khan. We are brothers. I was the first and you the last.” Cyrus replies.

Khan questions Cyrus’s intent, “Have you made any alliances as of yet?”

“No, but I do have a plan and an alliance with you and Hannibal would be advantageous to me. Besides, we three are probably the strongest. I will be comfortable with the alliance against any other.” Cyrus explains.

Kahn sits down and dissects what Cyrus intends. “I think you wish to face Alexander, so you need me to pin down Frederick. Of course, you want to keep Hannibal off your borders by occupying him someplace else.”

Subatia laughs and comments to Cyrus, “Genghis is perceptive, yes?”

Cyrus nods affirmatively and says, “It works for me.”

Kahn asks, “If you are planning to isolate Alexander and free yourself, then what makes you think that Adolphus or Caesar will not join Alexander?” He continues, “Consider this, if Alexander allies with Caesar and Adolphus while I contend with Frederick, then you will be isolated instead of Alexander.”

Cyrus smiles, and then says, “You make a valid point, but consider this; if I refuse to ally with Frederick while you are at war with him, then Frederick will most likely ally with Alexander to neutralize our alliance and also with Adolphus to protect his rear. It seems apparent that Napoleon will go to war with Hannibal because of his geographic position. It is unfavorable considering the fact that Hannibal wants through to reach Caesar. I believe Caesar and Napoleon must make an alliance whether they wish to or not. It, therefore, leads me to believe that Adolphus and Caesar will come to grips in the first campaign. I feel confident that we will both be secure in the first campaign.”

Khan agrees with the theories laid down by Cyrus. Then he adds, “In any case, as long as you are occupied with Alexander, then I think we can come to a favorable agreement.” Kahn and Subatia depart.

While they ride, Subatia asks Khan, “What do you make of the meeting between Cyrus and Talleyrand that we interrupted?”

Khan replies, “Deception, my friend, deception. But it will turn against him.”

Roetomus

Roetomus is finishing a speech before the Assembly of Earth’s Scientist.

“I’m pleased with the results of the TIMED Program. The TIMED will enable Earth to ascend to Central Command ahead of schedule.”

The crowd applauds. Roetomus eats up the attention. He adds with his finishing statement, “Earth, under our leadership, will do what no other planet has ever done. We will rise to Central Command in 10% of the time that any other planet has done. We will be immortalized throughout history.”

The crowd applauds generously as Roetomus leaves the stage. He walks to his cohort and says, “There are no limits to what we can do now. Before Altapola built the TIMED, this was just a fantastic dream. But look at us now.”

Jarneous nods with restrained enthusiasm. “Yes, but it was your vision to implement the Historic War Games. Its popularity turned a useless tool of archeology into a worthwhile venture. I cannot think of a better way to use the TIMED.”

Roetomus smiles without responding. Deep in his mind the true plan stirs.

Interlude IV: Altapola's True Aim

“It was never my plan to be involved in the Historic War Games.” Altapola tells his wife Ledia. “It was my aim that the TIMED be used for archeology and genuine historic purposes. We could resolve many myths and misconceptions about history, but Roetomus…”

Ledia interrupts, “Please, this stress is not good for you. I know you are a good man with good intentions. History will ultimately record this.”

“But in the meantime, I am nothing more than a pawn.” Altapola questions Ledia in an accusing tone, “What are you doing to stop Roetomus? Ledia, you are his chief rival in the Congress. Why have you failed to stop him there?”

“You know I am doing everything I can, but he has the majority in his favor.”

“I know, but I am frustrated. I feel corrupted by Roetomus, because I have to go along with his plans to keep the TIMED out of other’s hands.” Altapola sighs.

Ledia comforts him, “We should at least be thankful that Roetomus has limited plans for the TIMED.”

Cyrus meets Genghis

“Good morning, Cyrus.”

“You also,” he replies to Talleyrand. “We need to make arrangements. I am meeting with Genghis soon.”

“What is your plan,” Talleyrand questions.

“I desire you to disassemble whatever alliances Alexander makes. I also need you to keep our arrangement a secret from both Hannibal and Genghis, because I wish to make an alliance with them which may conflict with whatever arrangements you make. Besides, Genghis will not want to deal with you because he knows about your history. If you catch my meaning?”

Talleyrand smirks, “Yes. I understand. Genghis demanded loyalty above all else. But he is the one who does not understand. Napoleon was a madman. How could I have served him with loyalty?”

Cyrus does not argue the point; instead, he continues with the practical matter at hand, “Anyway, if Hannibal goes to war with Napoleon, then your presence in my camp may arouse his suspicions.”

“Yes. I agree with you, Cyrus. If either Hannibal or Genghis find out early in the game, it may end in your demise.”

“Indeed.” Cyrus continues, “Eventually they will know, but for now it is better to keep my plans a secret.”

“I’m sure, “Talleyrand replies. Talleyrand is not a fool and he has always minded his business well, but now that others know his true nature gives him many reasons to pause. He questions Cyrus, “But do you really trust me?”

Cyrus grins and says confidently, “I know you wish to prevent Napoleon from winning.”

A servant enters, “King Cyrus, Subatai is here now.”

“Show him in.”

Subatai enters and speaks first, “King Cyrus, I am very sorry that I kept you waiting. The breakfast your cook prepared was delightful. Perhaps I can borrow him again.”

Cyrus makes a gesture to win the fat general to his side, “He may go with you as your personal cook. He is one of my best.”

“Thank you.” Subatai then says, “Good negotiations always follow a good meal.”

They pause briefly and Talleyrand excuses himself without introduction. He leaves.

After Talleyrand departs, Cyrus asks, “When will Genghis arrive?”

“He is here now.” Genghis enters.

“Ah. You surprised me. I did not expect you so soon.” Cyrus is disconcerted but attempts not to show much emotion. “I did not expect you until tomorrow.”

“Speed, secrecy, surprise. This is the way of war.” Genghis says.
