An article recently published at About.com: Holistic Healing says that magnetic therapy really does work.

This particular study was done in Houston at the Baylor College of Medicine and has been published in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. In the study 76% of patients treated with a magnet received relief from their pain. This compared to only 18% percent treated with a sham magnet experienced pain relief.

Magnets provide relief from pain by increasing the blood flow to the painful are on the body. It has also been found to prevent muscle spasms by intefering with the muscle contractions. In nerve cells, magnets have been found to interfere with the electrochemical reactions which impedes the nerves ability to transmit pain messages to the brain.

While chronic pain can be treated with many over-the-counter medications, magnets offer a way to control pain that brings with it no side effects.

If you've never used magnets as a source of pain relief, you may not know what to expect. Here are answers to common questions that we receive from our customers at Beads-N-Style.....

Q: I've been wearing my magnetic jewelry for a couple of weeks and it doesn't seem to be helping me any -- why is it not working?
A: In order to experience the best results possible, you must wear your magnetic jewelry 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If left in place day and night the wearer should begin to experience relief from their pain within 3-6 weeks. The magnetic field works to reduce inflammation and increases endorphin levels. This cannot happen immediately. Be patient and give it a good 1-2 months before giving up and determining that is just doesn't work for you.

Q: Is it possible to use too many magnets?
A: Quite simply, the answer to this question is "No". The magnetic field given off by magnets cannot harm the body. An electromagnetic field already flows thru all living things. The magnetic field that flows through a magnetic bracelet is quite similar to the magnetic current that already flows thru the human body.

Q: Does the strength of the magnets matter?
Yes, it is important to know the strength of the magnetic beads in the jewelry you wear. The strength is measured in guass. The higher the gauss, the greater the healing power of the magnet. It is recommended that jewelry worn with the purpose to relieve pain be (at least) between 800 and 3000 gauss. At Beads-N-Style, we state the gauss of each item in the product description.

What is Hematite?

The majority of beads that are used in the jewelry at Beads-N-Style is made of magnetic hematite. But, what exactly is hematite?

Hematite is a type of iron oxide. This means that it contains oxygen molecules that are mixed with iron. Hematite is the most abundant iron-conaining mineral on Earth and is an important source of iron.

The name hematite comes from the reddish color that shows when the hematite is powdered. This reddish color reminded many of blood. The Greek word hema means blood, so was used to describe this stone.

Sometimes the hematite will be mixed with other minerals. Ilmenite is one such mineral that also includes titanium.

A number of products are made from hematite -- cosmetics, paints, carvings and jewelry.

This institute awarded a million dollar grant for the study of magnetic therapy in 1997.

Baylor College of Medicine, USA
In 1997 this college did a double blind study of 50 patients suffering pain from muscular or arthritic pain. Seventy-six percent of the patients treated with magnets reported a significant improvement in their levels of pain.

New York Medical College, N.Y.
Dr. Michael Weintraub released information from studies in 1999 that showed significant reduction in foot pain in diabetics with the use of magnets.

Vanderbilt University Medical Centre
In studies at this medical center, it was found that between 80% and 90% of patients with pain due to sport injuries found relief from their pain after being treated with magnets.

Do you wonder how magnets work to relieve pain? It does seem strange, doesn't it, that something like a magnet could relieve pain brought on by so many ailments. It does work, though.... read on to find out how!

The magnetic fields that radiate from a magnet increase the blood flow in the body. When the body's blood flow is increased, the oxygen, nutrients and hormones are distributed more effectively and more quickly. This gives your organs a fresh supply of oxygen and nutrients. Additionally, as the tissues gain this fresh supply of oxygen and nutrients, endorphins are also distributed. It is these endorphins that do the job... they are the body's natural painkilling hormone.

Does the Strength of the Magnet Matter?

When you shop for magnetic jewelry do you pay attention to the strength of the magnets? If you don't, you should. This is important information and could make the difference as to whether or not you experience relief from pain from the use of magnets.

According to the Magnetic Therapy Council, the minimum strength for an adult should be 800 gauss per magnet or magnetic item (bracelet, necklace, etc). Magnets with a lesser strength will have difficulty penetrating the skin and tissues. Beyond that, the strength of the magnet is dependent on the ailment.

Below is informaton (also from the Magnetic Therapy Council) that shows the approximate ratio of strength of magnet to ailment.

Sprains, strains, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, RSI, muscle strains, bruising, tennis elbow, minor sports injuries - 800 gauss, between 4 and 6 magnets encircling the injury or pressure point

Joint pain (not arthritis pain), mild back pain, swollen joints (not from arthritis or osteoporosis), frozen shoulder - 1,700 gauss, between 6 and 12 magnets encircling the injury or pressure point

Spondylosis, sciatica, arthritis, osteoporosis, migraine, insomnia - 2000-2500 gauss, between 10 and 25 magnets encircling the injury or pressure point

chronic arthritis, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, MS, ME - 3000-3500 gauss, between 12 and 125 magnets (depending on the amount of different pain points) encircling the injury or pressure point

**Pressure points - as with acupuncture, magnetic therapy acts upon pressure points in the body. For example, by wearing a bracelet you have placed a magnet on the pressure point in your wrist. This can help with pain in your shoulder, your hands and certain types of back pain.
