Prospective Pedagogy : Annite's Analogy

The world today demands teachers with differently - abled talents. Pedagogy has emerged as a science and this is a concern for the National Curriculum Framework for teacher Education 2009. As a departure from the existing approaches , St.Ann's College of Education introduces a new theory paper in pedagogy, the rationale behind is to equip teacher trainees with the knowledge of concept and theories of pedagogy.

In the above line of thought, the college has launched a book - Prospective Pedagogy : Annite's Analogy. This book is a conscious effort of the fact that such a document is important to re-look at the futuristic implications for teacher Education. The aim of compiling this book is to capture the wisdom of ages and to make it relevant to these times and to help educators to come up with innovative methodologies.

This article is a extract of an interview with Dr.Ch.Nirmala, a lecturer in Psychology at the St.Ann's college of Education, Sec'bad. She shared with us some vital facets on - Teacher's contribution to the society . The following are the extracts :

How can a teacher help eradicate illiteracy from the society ?

- I would take my students to the community and encourage them to teach for free to those who are deprived of education.

Other than imparting knowledge, what according to you is the most important duty of a teacher ?

- I think that a teacher can be an effective counselor . Hence she should also play the role of a counselor and a guide for her students.

How can a teacher influence her student's behavior towards the deprived in the society ?

- A teacher can encourage them to work together for the deprived. To achieve this, she may see that they visit the home for the deprived such as the home for handicapped, old age homes , etc .

How can a teacher help imbibe the qualities of democratic citizens within her students ?

- The teacher is considered to be the role model to her/his students . Therefore it is important that the teacher herself depicts the traits of a democratic citizen. At the same time she can tell the students the importance of being democratic in nature. She must teach the students to respect one's opinions, ideas and ideologies.

Schools of Educational Philosophy

Eminent educators on the philosophy of education have tried to reduce philosophies to a limited number of types or "schools" of philosophical thought .

Classification by different authors :

Rusk classifies schools of philosophy into Naturalism,Idealism and scepticism but later he dismissed the last and added pragmatism as fourth category .
J.D.Bulter classifies his philosophical thought into Naturalism, Idealism,Realism,Pragmatism .
R.C.Lodge classifies in the same manner omitting Naturalism.
J.S.Brubacher groups Educational Philosophy as progressive and traditional or Essentialism .

The four main schools of philosophy are as follows :

Idealism
Naturalism
Pragmatism
Existentialism

Idealism : Prof.Hornie pointed out that the term "Idealism" has been derived from two distinct sources - on the one hand it comes from the word "idea",on the other from "ideal".The words idea,ideal and ideology all came into the vocabulary of philosophy from the Greek world.These three words ,have in common the fact that they refer to something in which,figuratively,things seen by us differs from each other.

Plato made the word 'idea' most celebrated in philosophy.What is in human mind is an idea according to him .For example "house" becomes an idea in our mind only after we have already formulated the characteristics which are essential to a house . There are four important characteristics of a house.A house must have floor,doors,windows and walls . Without the knowledge of the four charateristics of house ,we develop only a vague notion about house,and not an idea .

Essence of Idealism :

Idealism regards man as a spiritual being .
The world of ideas and values are more important than the world of matter .
This world is the expression of mind .
The world is not purposeless.It is a purposeful creation .
Values are absolute and fixed .
Human life has its aim. It is not aimless .

Naturalism : It is developed in 19th century.Naturalism is the oldest philosophy.It is the philosophical position,says Rusk,adopted by those who approach philosophy from the purely scientific standpoint.They tend to carry natural laws into the spiritual world and apply them to human experience and materials.In other words,the laws of nature must underline the life,thought and history of man.

Essence of Naturalism :

Nature alone is the reality
Return to nature
Unchanging laws of nature explain all the events and occurrences of world.
The naturalists consider the universe as a huge machine.Man is a part of this machine and a complete machine in himself.

Pragmatism : The pragmatic method is primarily a method of solving metaphysical disputes which are unending.It is a method wherein one looks away from first principles and looks toward last last things,or consequences of action.It is basically an attitude or a frame of mind and not a body of ideas.

Essence of Pragmatism :

The reality of change over permanence.
The reality of value.
The social and biological nature of man.
The importance of democracy as a way of life.
The value of critical intelligence in all human conduct.

Existentialism : It has many implications for students and teachers.It seeks to create certain consciousness and attitude about learning.The existentialists know that physical reality exists;they also know that science is a necessary and careful part of the curriculum.

Difference between Evaluation and Measurement

The major differences between Evaluation and Measurement are as follows :

Evaluation Measurement

Evaluation refers to the act or process of determining the value of something . Evaluation is thus a qualitative judgement of how good or how satisfactory an individual performances .

Types of Evaluation :

Diagnostic Evaluation
Formative Evaluation
Summative Evaluation

Diagnostic Evaluation : This type of evaluation is done at the beginning of the teaching-learning process in order to find out the specific weakness either on an individual or at class level.

Formative Evaluation : This type of evaluation is used to monitor the progress made during the instruction process . It helps in making decision relating to development of learner and courses .

Summative Evaluation : This type of evaluation is concerned with making an overall judgement at the end of the course . Terminal examination whether internal or external are an example of summative evaluation . Cumulative assessment,teacher made achievement tests,rating of laboratory skills and evaluation of projects are various forms of summative evaluation.

Purpose of Evaluation :

To stimulate teachers to improve their techniques of classroom instruction.
To enrich and vitalize the course of study.
To establish faculty,assess various ways the degree of improvement in personal and professional attitude in human relations.
Supervisory programme to promote greater educational attention to individual needs of pupil.

Objectives of Evaluation :

To appraise the status and changes in pupil behaviour.
To disclose pupils needs and possibilities.
To aid pupil teacher planning.
To expand the concept of worthwhile goals beyond pure achievement.
To serve as a means of improving school community relation.
To familiarize the teacher with the nature of pupil learning,development and progress.

How to make effective charts

The following are the different ways to prepare effective charts and also the tips to handle charts :

All charts must have borders
Excess Text should not be dumped in charts
The title of the chart should be distinct and clear
The colour of the chart and the colour of the text should compliment one another
Use flannel board for displaying the charts
The size of the chart and the content must be visible to whole class
The text in the chart must be legible
Diagrams if any must be clear and completely labelled
Avoid holding charts in hands during instruction process
Avoid folding charts,instead roll them up

Tips for Teaching Practice

The phase of teaching practice i.e., the internship part of B.Ed is considered to be the most vital as well is enjoyable part of the course . One needs to fully deploy the opportunity and learn as much as he/she can. Some of the tips for teaching practice are :

Be polite with master teachers
Be prepared with the content and lesson plan
Rehearse your class in advance
Avoid Lecture method

Micro Teaching

This article briefs on micro-teaching , one of the most widely accepted ways of learning to teach.
Micro Teaching is a technique in which a teacher make use of one specific teaching skill at a time, so that he/she attains mastery on teaching.

The techniques like.........

Introducing a particular topic,
questioning about the topic,
explaining,
Writing on the black board,
Using teaching aids and so on .

In this micro teaching a teacher can also learn nonverbal behavioural skills such as.........

Smiling,
Nodding and
Gesturing.

These teaching skills can be defined, practised, observed, controlled, measured and evaluated.

Microteaching is a teacher training technique but not a teaching method. It is a real teaching but reduces the classroom complexities. It is a scaled down process in which class size, class time and content is limited.

Practising one teaching skill at a time,
Limiting the content to a single concept,
Reducing the class size,
Reducing the duration of the lesson.

The teacher trainee should plan for the lesson and use each teaching skill at a time. After each skill a feedback is given and if the skill is not achieved, the trainee is asked to re plan and reteach . This is repeated until he/she is mastery over the skill achieved .

It is a supplement to a teaching-training programme, which gives an achievement by providing feedback to the trainees.

Microteaching is a cyclic process of

Plan-->Teach-->Feedback-->Re-plan-->Re-teach-->Re-feedback.

The steps in Micro Teaching Cycle:

Planning

This involves selection of the skill to be practised, awareness of the components of the skill, selection of a suitable concept and the writing of a micro lesson plan.

Teaching

The trainee teaches the lesson in the micro teaching setting.
