NBA Draft Lottery Preview

If you're a Sixers fan, you might want to check out tonight's NBA Draft Lottery before doing anything else. If you're a Lakers and/or Heat fan, you may want to brace yourself.

While the thought of walking away with the #1 overall pick in this year's draft sounds nice and I'm sure most fans would love to have a problem like figuring out how to maneuver a roster that boasts the likes of Nerlens Noel, Joel Embiid and either Karl-Anthony Towns or Jahlil Okafor.

Philly could be leaving Brooklyn tonight with much, much more. In fact, they have a chance of owning 3 picks within the first 11 selections of this year's draft.

After finishing with the 3rd worst record in the NBA following the end of the 2014-15 regular season, the Sixers are guaranteed a Top-6 pick in this year's lottery. With a sliding scale, the probability of picks within the Top-6 varies (#5 - 26.5%, #4 - 22.6% & #1-3 - 15% each) but the biggest steal depend on the fate of two other franchises; the Los Angeles Lakers and the Miami Heat.

Thanks to what has turned out to be a completely disastrous trade for Steve Nash, one which the Lakers could continue to pay for. The Lakers will have to sweat it out tonight as they potentially watch their top-5 protected 2015 1st-rounder (Lakers/Suns Nash deal in 2012), now owned by Philly, fall out of the top 5.

After an abysmal year in Laker-land came to an end, the only redeeming factors were the development of rookie point guard Jordan Clarkson and the possibilities surrounding their pick. With a 16% chance at the #6 pick, the Lakers dreadful season may continue well into the spring.

Although the Heat's season didn't fare quite as badly as the Lakers, it was no less disappointing considering the fall from grace that has taken place in South Beach over these past 11 months.

After reaching the NBA Finals for four straight seasons, including two NBA titles, the Heat's tumbled started last July when the face of the league LeBron James decided to return home to Cleveland. Despite the team's still very talented roster, Miami stumbled throughout the season and was then forced to deal with a devastating blow when star PF Chris Bosh was lost for the season due to a scary blood clot found in his lungs.

As if things couldn't get any worse, the Heat now face the possibility of losing its 1st round lottery pick if they fall out of the Top-10. The way things have gone for Miami of late, it wouldn't be completely shocking to see their nightmare season continue but for the sake of their fans, here's hoping at least some good can come out of this year.

All told, there is a scenario (albeit with 1-in-357 odds) that they could go home tonight with the #1, #6 & #11 pick in this June's 2015 NBA Draft.

Certainly worth following tonight if you cheer for the boys from the city that boos Santa.

Whether this does anything to change the Sixers "tanking" philosophy...well, that remains to be seen.

National Championship: Tale of the Tape

Big Ten - Wisconsin (36-3) vs. ACC - Duke (34-4)
Monday, 9:18 p.m., CBS

The Road to the Finals

Wisconsin & Duke have taken very different roads to get to tonight’s championship game in Indianapolis. Both teams come in as the top seeds from their respective regions and both are playing their best basketball of the season but it's the Badgers who have been through an absolute gauntlet to get to tonight's big game.

Wisconsin, the top seed out of the West Region, defeated #16 Coastal Carolina, #9 Oregon and #4 North Carolina before knocking off the best 2-seed in the field, Arizona.

The Wildcats were the odds-on favourite to play spoiler to the OTHER Wildcats before getting knocked off for the 2nd straight year by Wisconsin in an Elite Eight.

While that result was hardly surprising, and I for one was of the belief that the winner of the West Region would pose the biggest threat to Kentucky's perfect season, it was still a remarkable feat given how well Zona was playing this season.

The Badgers 2nd half vs Arizona, really helped set the tone ahead of Saturday's Final Four match up with Kentucky. As the Final Four game got deeper, it was that level of play/confidence that Sam Dekker, Frank Kaminsky & co. fed off of once again, to carry them to their shocking 71-64 win.

Duke on the other hand, come into tonight's game after going through a far less daunting schedule yet still faced some challenges en route to winning the South Region. The Blue Devils took down #16 Robert Morris, #8 San Diego State, and #5 Utah, before playing a tightly contested game, not recognized by the final 14-point spread, verses Gonzaga. Duke followed that up in Saturday’s Final Four, by putting forth a dominate performance which overwhelmed the 7th-seeded Michigan State Spartans en route to a 81-61 victory.

Overall in the tournament, the Blue Devils have looked like a completely different team on the defensive end and uses its athleticism extremely well, getting out in passing lanes and disrupting their opponents offense. On the other side of the ball, the Dukies do what we've all come to expect (find open shooters to knock it down, get the ball into Okafor to do his work & to attack off the bounce) which will pose problems for the Badgers lack of depth.

Despite the Blue Devils obviously easier road to the finals, they've still managed to impress and knock off some quality teams but it's the battle-tested Badgers who've benefited from the tournament's draw.

Advantage: Wisconsin

Coaches
Wisconsin's head coach Bo Ryan is one of the elite coaches in college basketball today and he has been instrumental in bringing the Badgers program to national prominence since taking over in 2001. Prior to his time in Madison, Ryan spent 15 years at Division III Wisconsin-Platteville, where he led the Pioneers to a record of 353-76 and four national championships (1991, 1995, 1998, 1999).

Thrown into a ring, Bo comes out on top when comparing him to most college coaches but it goes almost without saying that Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, is NOTHING like most coaches.

In fact, Krzyzewski owns a staggering 1017-310 coaching record, placing him 1st in all-time NCAA coaching victories which is only a sample-size of the coaching records currently in his name. Speaking of which, Krzyzewski also joined legendary UCLA Bruins coach, John Wooden earlier this tournament, after advancing to his 12th career Final Four and now sets his sights on national championship number 5.

Not only is Krzyzewski the best college basketball coach in NCAA history, Coach K may be one of the best coaches period, regardless of the sport.

If Duke wins tonight, it will mark Coach K's third national title in Indy (1991 & 2010).

Sorry, Bo. This is just one of those things you can't win.

Much was made of Wisconsin only being able to go about 7 deep, while Kentucky could go to 9 without seeing a drop off. Well, with the Badgers starting 5 playing the way they have in their last two games, does it really matter how deep into their bench they can go? Clearly not.

Listen, the starters can't be relied on for everything but when you put out the Naismith National Player of the Year, alongside a guy in Sam Dekker, who if he came back next season could very well it back-to-back Wisconsin players, you give teams SERIOUS problems. Regardless if the opponent is Kentucky, Duke or North Dakota...

With Nigel Hayes helping to spread the floor and provide his tough-nosed defense, and the backcourt of Bronson Koenig & Josh Gasser bringing a steady hand and high-IQ, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better starting 5.

Advantage: Wisconsin

Considering Wisconsin only goes about two deep into its bench... should I say more?

Fine, I will. Amile Jefferson, Marshall Plumlee, & Grayson Allen vs Traevon Jackson & Duje Dukan...

Duke wins!

Star Breakout
In a game that features two Wooden Award finalists (Kaminsky & Okafor), one of which won the award (Frank the Tank), there is a lot of star power on display tonight. Sorry Skip Bayless, maybe it's not as star-studded as a Ketucky-Duke game could have been but the prospect of seeing a star shine tonight is still pretty damn good.

As mentioned above, the Wooden Award finalists in Wisconsin's senior, Frank Kaminsky and Duke freshman, Jahlil Okafor, steal the headline but it is far from a two-man showdown.

Considering the Badgers program has only 3 current players in the NBA, the 2015 version is stacked with talent and could very well double that number in the coming years thanks to Kaminsky, Dekker & Hayes.

Then there's the Dukies freshmen. With the potential #1 overall pick in Jahlil Okafor, a likely Top-5 pick in SG/SF Justise Winslow and point guard Tyus Jones who's stock has risen considerably during this tournament, this is probably the easiest one to call outside of the coaching match up.

Hands down, Blue Devils.

Advantage: Duke

X-factor
While Duke has several players (Winslow, Jones, Cook) worthy of tipping the X-factor scales on any given night, in tonight's game, there is no bigger X-factor than Wisconsin’s Sam Dekker.

Dekker has been outstanding all tournament long but it's the way he's continued to come up big for his team, especially late like he did vs North Carolina, Arizona and Kentucky, that really sets him a part.

At 6'9/230 with a good handle, great shooting touch and sneaky athleticism, Dekker will give Duke a lot to handle and if he can continue his clutch play alongside Frank Kaminsky tonight, the Badgers could be well on their way to championship #2!

Advantage: Wisconsin

Style of Play
At times Wisconsin seemed like it might get caught up in the up & down pace of Kentucky but then they showed their headiness, slowed things down and played their style of ball.

Unlike Duke or Kentucky, Wisconsin won't overwhelm you with its athleticism but they've got good size, play smart halfcourt offense and take great care of the rock. Most importantly, they play sound defense which allows them to switch it up. While they can slow it down or speed things up, they would probably prefer to keep the scoring in the 60's - mid 70's. Much like they did against Kentucky, expect Wisconsin to spread the floor to open up lanes for Dekker and Kaminsky to attack and find their open teammates.

Duke picked apart Michigan State with its relentless pressure defense, Tyus Jones' ability to penetrate and dish to his efficient shooters and of course, by exerting its physicality down low. Duke will need to do much of the same tonight vs the Badgers in order to win but will face a much tougher opponent.

Duke's 80 points was the most allowed by Wisconsin in any game this season, if the Badgers play to their tempo, don't expect a repeat of December 3rd.

Prediction
A lot of talk heading into Monday night's championship has been about the game played on December 3rd in Madison, when the Blue Devils left town shooting 65% on its way to earning the 80-70 victory. Well that's a fair starting point given it's the only time these two teams have met this season, it doesn't serve as the best indicator on what to expect tonight since both teams are dramatically different today.

After taking down an undefeated and historically loaded, Kentucky team, Wisconsin's confidence and overall performance is at an all-time high. The thought of taking down another high-powered team featuring a star freshmen and several McDonald’s All-Americans, doesn't seem all that crazy. Come to think of it, this would make the 3rd straight game the Badgers have attempted to do so (Arizona, Kentucky & now Duke).

This Duke team is one of the more talented teams Coach K has had in recent years and are made even more impressive by their defensive play during the course of the tournament. Frankly, this isn't the same team that went 15-3 during ACC play.

With the freshmen trio of Okafor, Winslow & Jones leading the way, Duke is in great position to earn the program's 5th national title (all under Coach K's tutelage) but they face a tough test in Wisconsin.

The Badgers haven't been this far in the tournament since their 1941 championship run but don't expect them to be happy just to be here. This is a veteran led team, fueled by their failed experience endured at the hands of Kentucky in last year's Final Four.

With a top-level offense led by Player of the Year Frank Kaminsky and tournament stud, Sam Dekker, the Badgers seem poised to complete their destiny-like run...as long as Duke doesn't shoot 65% again.

After tonight, it will be Coach Bo Ryan who will be making room beside his four other national championships and help earn the Big Ten its first national title in 15 years.

The last couple months, The Bench has been bringing you some big name guests, and while we could just rest on our laurels, we decided to book an interview with the man who has more laurels than anyone else in college basketball history!

Our guest is quite possibly the greatest player in NCAA Tournament history! He played 13 years in the NBA as a member of the Wolves, Hawks, Pistons, Wizards and Heat, and he is the subject of ESPN's most recent documentary.

Can Anyone Stop Kentucky?

With three games in the tournament now under their belts, the Kentucky Wildcats are 37-0 heading into tonight's Elite Eight matchup against the ACC's Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Attempting something only seven other teams in NCAA tournament history have accomplished before, and not since the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers, the Wildcats are a mere three games away from a perfect championship season.

Despite being perfect, the Wildcats are far from the perfect team. They can be prone to short scoring lulls and trying to do too much to make that "big play". Other times their shooting can be streaky and flat. But then they can follow it up with a game like West Virginia or UCLA either in the year (41-7 at half vs the Bruins). This group is scary unpredictable.

Perhaps us fans and followers are also the ones to blame for part of this. We look at this team on paper and expect things that we can't realistically think are possible. Regardless of our insanely high expectations, overall this team is on its way to something special for good reason.

They've had to fight through some tight games this season and in some cases, games that had no business being close but collectively, they've put together one of the most impressive season's in D-I history.

When thinking of those other great teams, how high up on that list the Wildcats could potentially climb will depend solely on whether anyone can stop them.

Of the remaining teams left in the tournament, these four are my picks for having the best chance at giving the Wildcats their first loss of the season.

Arizona Wildcats
Potential Matchup: Final Four
Next Game: Wisconsin (West Region)

Former A10 Freshmen & Defensive Player of the Year (Duquesne), T.J. McConnell was OUTSTANDING guarding the potential top-3 pick this June's Draft (D'Angelo Russell) during the Round of 32 play vs Ohio State.

Although Russell was allowed to impact the game in other areas (passing, rebounding, defense), his inability to create space for himself or get anything going towards the basket severely limited his team's offense. Without his scoring, the Buckeyes had virtually no chance at keeping pace with the efficient Wildcats.

McConnell will need to build off his 2nd half performance against Xavier where he scored 13 of his 17 points and locked down his man defensively. The senior will be counted on to do the same Saturday vs Wisconsin if they have any chance at advancing to face the OTHER Wildcats.

If Arizona were to survive and face Kentucky, the pressure would be on its talented but smaller frontcourt of Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, Kaleb Tarczewski & Brandon Ashley. Along with lottery-bound freshmen Stanley Johnson, these four will be responsible for limiting Kentucky's 2nd chances, keeping their bigs off the offensive glass and pressuring the ball inside. No small order.

As a team Arizona shoots 49% from the field and can score in a variety of ways. They'll need to spread out the more physical UK Wildcats with solid ball movement and hard screens off the ball, in order to free up its shooters and create room heading towards the bucket to get an easy look or draw a foul.

Sean Miller has the personnel to get through Kentucky on its way to a National Championship but it will have to play its best basketball, both sides of the floor, verses the supremely talented boys of Lexington.

I view the winner of the Wisconsin/Arizona West Regional Final as the current favourite to beat out Kentucky.

Duke Blue Devils
Potential Matchup: National Championship
Next Game: Gonzaga (South Region)

One of three #1 seeds still left in the tournament, Duke is loaded with talent...Quinn Cook, Justise Winslow, Tyus Jones, Amile Jefferson...some guy named Jahilil Okafor. Maybe it's not as deep as the Wildcats but it does include the best player in the country not named Frank Kaminsky.

Both Kentucky and Duke have a player considered to be a possible No 1 pick in this summer's draft (Okafor and Towns).

All the things I talked about before as being keys to beating Kentucky; creating space down low, smart possessions with good ball movement, and efficient shooting from deep; Duke checks every box.

Connecting on nearly 40% of their 3's and . The Blue Devils are as capable as anyone, to beat Kentucky, as long as they can execute coach Krzyzewski's game plan. If that happens, that could be a final for the ages.

Notre Dame
Matchup: Elite Eight (Midwest Region)

Playing in its program's first Regional Finals since 1979, Notre Dame heads into Ohio on the quite the run. After capturing the ACC tournament title, the Irish have are coming off an impressive 11-point win in the Sweet 16 over Wichita State and are riding an 8 game win streak.

Shooting 52% over its first three games in the tournament is a good start for the Irish but they'll need to improve upon their 37% from beyond the arc if they want to stay with the Wildcats. Although severely undersized, Notre Dame plays smart and does a nice job moving the ball to spread you out while they wait for good looks. People may scoff at the prospect of Notre Dame unseating Kentucky but Mike Bray will have his guys ready.

Senior Pat Connaughton will be called on in this one to bring his outside shooting touch but it will be Zach Auguste who will be Notre Dame's X-factor. It will be his ability to establish his spot inside to free up his shooters and get some points in the paint.

Jerian Grant and Demetrius Jackson will need to use their unique skill sets to get both Auguste and Connaughton involved early and often, and add a scoring punch by freeing themselves for the outside and attacking the basket off the bounce.

The bottom line is Notre Dame would need to be very efficient on both ends of the floor and get contributions from everyone on the court to have any chance at shocking the undefeated Wildcats.

Is this the best Wisconsin team in program history?

No disrespect to the Badgers 1941 National Championship team but the top-level talent on the 2015 edition is off the charts.

Senior forward Frank Kaminsky has been a man on a mission all season and he's seemed to take that to another level during the tournament.

In the Badgers 79-72 Sweet 16 win over North Carolina, Kaminsky saved his best play for late down the stretch en route to a relatively quite 19 points. Teammates Sam Dekker and Nigel Hayes fill out the rest of the Badgers first round talent and will be counted on for strong showings against Arizona if they want any shot at Kentucky in the Final Four.

The most impressive thing about Wisconsin, aside from having three future NBA players, including the probable POY (Kaminsky), the talent runs much deeper than that in Madison. Bronson Koenig, Josh Gasser and Traevon Jackson (when healthy) are as fine a role player as you could find. Dekker will need to continue his impressive play but the Badgers have the roster and shooting ability to torpedo any hope of a perfect season in Lexington.

As mentioned, the winner of Wisconsin/Arizona is my favourite to beat the Wildcats in the Final Four. Having the chance to revenge a tight loss from last season would make for a great plot line in the storied history of Wisconsin head coach Bo Ryan's career.

The Rest

Sorry fans of Michigan State, Louisville, and Gonzaga. I could very well have made a case for each and every one of your teams but that wasn't the purpose of this article. To be honest, I only had the Bulldogs in a Final Four in any one of my brackets and they went no further than that.

Tom Izzo and his Michigan State Spartan teams have been making a living by making people like me look foolish with their bracket picks. Maybe they'll be doing it again this year. I respect this team and its star, how could you not? This team is just gritty. You can't rattle them. You could also draw on a number of parallels between this team and last year's national championship squad, Connecticut Huskies.

Aside from the same #7 seed, both teams have a veteran leadership group that experienced deep runs in previous tournament's. Although they don't have a comparable star to Shabazz Napier, the Spartans do have a skilled trio of Branden Dawson, Denzel Valentine and Travis Trice. Each bring to the table a steady hand and as the tournament has proved, a certain unflappability regardless of the environment.

Fellow Bluegrass powerhouse Louisville, also an intensely hated rival, played Kentucky back in December where Rick Pitino's team left with an 8 point loss. The Cardinals were able to force 18 turnovers and at times, visibly rattle the younger Wildcats. Or maybe that was just Montrezl Harrell...

The game did showcase the disruption brought on by the suffocating Wildcat defense as they limited
Louisville to 26% shooting. The Cardinals defense is more than capable of keeping the game close but ultimately its lack of scoring will be its downfall.

I mentioned Gonzaga was the only one of the three teams here that I had advancing this deep. I even went as far as predicting them upsetting Duke in the South Region.

Its not that I don't believe in their talent, I just don't think its a good matchup for the Bulldogs. The frontcourt battle would be intriguing but Przemek Karnowski and Domantas Sabonis have never faced the likes of Willie Cauley-Stein, Karl-Anthony Towns and Trey Lyles. I don't think the Zags can keep up with the versatile trio and will find it extremely difficult to get consistent looks in around the rim.

Kyle Wiltjer would likely still go off since he can score from just about anywhere on the court. Not to mention he's gone up against guys of similar status as this the current crop of Kentucky Wildcats back from his days representing the Big Blue. Wiltjer of course played alongside the likes of Anthony Davis during the Wildcats last championship season in 2012.

Kentucky vs the Field

The Wildcats size, skill, depth, relentless defense and did I mention size?..is downright scary. If any team is going to break down the walls of UK, they're going to need to play out of their minds for 40 minutes.

As EVERYONE who has played this Kentucky team can attest to, those guys can cut you down in a so many different ways and can wear you down with their incredible depth. If you're not ready to hit back, the Wildcats will not hesitate to bury you.

In order to beat coach Cal and company, a team will need to match their rhythm on both ends of the floor. Defensively, they'll need to stay in front of the Harrison twins so as not to allow them to penetrate deep and open up the D on the back end. Containing them could also take a big of the wind out of the Kentucky attack.

As crazy as it sounds, despite Kentucky's intimidating frontcourt, if anyone is going to have any success they'll need to challenge the likes of Towns, Cauley-Stein and Lyles, and hope to get them in foul trouble but more importantly, carve out space for shooters on the perimeter.

Kentucky is so long, quick and closes out so well, even the best 3-point shooting teams have a difficult time finding clean looks. Without establishing that position down low, the Wildcats will leave you absolutely no room to operate which puts in doubt any hope for proper spacing.

Find a way to do all this, and maybe avoid any significant scoring drought, and a team has a chance to shock the college basketball world despite the Wildcats abundance of promise.

Just remember.

If you can...keep an eye on those Harrison twins. As we saw last year and throughout this season, when the game is on the line, those kids can burn 'ya.

March Madness: East Preview

Elephant in the room

Can Justin Anderson return to form and lead Virginia to the Final Four?

Through the first half of the season, outside of those guys from Lexington, there was perhaps no better team than Virginia. A big part of that success was junior G/F Justin Anderson, whose diverse skill-set presents an absolute matchup nightmare for opposing teams.

Unfortunately for Anderson and his team, the talented swingman has been plagued by injuries of late, which has limited his ability to help on either end of the floor, especially on the offensive side. While there is still plenty of time for Tony Bennett and his staff to get their star player back in game shape during their opening round bouts, the worries in Virginia are very real.

Although they remain far from a one-trick pony; the Cavs led the nation in defense, allowing a suffocating 50.8 ppg. For an offense that at times leaves much to be desired, not having its 2nd leading scorer (just under 47% from 3) 100% healthy could be all it takes to send the Cavaliers home early.

Dark horses to ride

I've watched Villanova all year long and I feel that they are much better than they sometimes let on. I also disagree with a lot of pundits pointing to Nova as the unquestioned first 1-seed out of the tournament. HOWEVER, when looking for a dark horse in this bracket, (unless you want this whole breakdown to be about the Panthers of Northern Iowa) there is one team that intrigues me and could completely destroy the top of the bracket for the majority of us. That team is the LSU Tigers.

Sporting the nation's 37th best scoring offense (73.7 ppg) and 12th best rebounding (39.2 rpg), the Tigers are an intriguing team that could surprise a lot of folks in March. Overshadowed by the conference's darling Kentucky, the SEC has had a strong 2014-15 despite a down season from perennial tournament team Florida. The Gators loss has been a major gain for the likes of Arkansas and LSU who now, given their potential are looking to cash in.

As seen in its 71-69 loss to Kentucky last month, LSU can play with the best teams in the nation. Unfortunately for them, they've also been known for playing down to the competition and suffering some serious head-scratching losses. Regardless, if the young frontcourt of Jordan Mickey & Jarell Martin can play to their strengths (hit the glass, dominate the low block) and hold off a deeper NC State team, the Tigers (and Wolfpack) are very capable of knocking off Nova and going on a bit of a run.

Player you've likely never heard of...
6'8 F Seth Tuttle, Northern Iowa Panthers

Players that average 15.3 ppg on 62% shooting are welcome on any team but add to that 6.7 rpg & 3.3 apg, and you have yourself one of the more impressive players in the country. The Panthers are a veteran team that has not looked undeserving of its Top-10 billing over the latter part of the season and Seth Tuttle is a major part of that. If the Panthers can string together a deep run in March, expect to see a heavy dose of this big man.

Cinderellas to "Swipe Right" On

Outside of the South bracket, there is no other region capable of seeing more upsets than the East. With top teams struggling of late (Louisville, Virginia) and other perennial tournament contenders lacking their typical abundance of talent (Michigan State), there is a real good chance we could see a couple lesser known schools make a deep run in the region.

Although not the same team as last year, Dayton could be an interesting Cinderella option in the East but their lack of size (no player over 6'6) will limit their opportunity to become a real threat. This makes my Cinderella pick in the East the Panthers of Northern Iowa.

A team with a record of 30-3 is far from your typical Cinderella story, especially when they've spent the last few weeks hovering around the Top-10. Led by senior F Seth Tuttle (see above) and a 5th ranked defense, the Panthers are a real threat to Villanova's high-powered offense. If Northern Iowa can avoid an extended dry-spell on the offensive end, their defense should carry them deep in the East bracket.

Elite Eight Prediction

#2 Virginia vs #5 Northern Iowa

If offense sells tickets and defense wins championships; this game could end up a slugfest being fought in front of a half empty building.

While both teams are better known for their defense, the Panthers and the Cavs are also efficient scoring teams (UNI ranks 13th nationally from 3). The biggest concern for the Cavaliers is the status of Justin Anderson and its sometimes anemic offense. If they go into a scoring drought late in games, the Cavs could be sent packing long before this game.

All things considered, with the nation's best defense and a group of guys that have been knocking on the door for the past two seasons, I expect Tony Bennett's team to be here and to get the better of the Panthers on its way to the program's first Final Four since 1984.

Elephant in the room

At last year's West Region Elite Eight in Anaheim, Wisconsin's then junior forward Frank Kaminsky put on the showing of a lifetime. When the Badgers needed a big shot, Kaminsky - the favourite to win the 2015 Wooden National Player of the Year Award - was video game-esque in his delivery, coming through for the team, time and time again.

In what turned out to be a physical, back and forth game, chalk full of late-game/overtime heroics between last year's only 1-2 regional final, we find ourselves wondering if another epic performance is on the horizon in this year's West bracket.

While it would certainly be difficult to top what was one of the 2014 tournament's best games, the prospect of seeing a rematch in 2015 is something I, and I'm sure plenty of others, have been hoping for since the brackets were released on Sunday.

In less than just two weeks, we'll have our answer.

Dark horses to ride

I'll be blunt. My pick here is North Carolina. Now I must admit it seems kind of strange to put UNC in this spot, given the program's tremendous history, North Carolina basketball and dark horse aren't exactly synonymous. The fact of the matter is, I just don't see any other team hanging with Wisconsin or Arizona in the West so why not give a shot to an athletic, high scoring Tar Heels team. Especially one coming off an impressive victory over Virginia in the ACC semifinals.

Roy Williams has had a lot of talented teams come through his gym since coming to Raleigh. His 2015 edition...well they're not really up there with anyone of significance. However, where this team lacks in star power, they more than make up for it in depth. The Tar Heels do have future NBA players on its roster... they just happen to be likely 2nd round picks. Not that that's a bad thing. A lot of programs would dream of having the luxury of fielding a lineup full of future NBA role players.

Leaning on that depth and its excellent coaching, look for Carolina to get to a Sweet 16 vs Wisconsin where, if they can contain the Badgers stars, Frank Kaminsky and Sam Dekker, we could be seeing UNC competing for a spot in Indy.

Player you've likely never heard of...
6'6 G R.J. Hunter, Georgia State Panthers

If you don't know about Ohio State's D'Angelo Russell by now... you shouldn't be watching this tournament, so I won't even go there. Bobby Portis from the Arkansas Razorbacks is another solid choice here but even he's had his profiles raised throughout the season. For me, it's the coach’s son who steals the spotlight in the West region. Even if Georgia State's only game at this tournament is its opening round game against Baylor, Hunter is poised to make a big impression.

The funniest part about it is, R.J.'s dad and the team's head coach, Ron Hunter is perhaps more famous heading into the tournament than his NBA-bound son. During coach Hunter's Sun Belt championship celebration, he hobbled to the floor with an apparent injury, which would later be diagnosed as a ruptured Achilles. Undeterred by his injury, the elder Hunter is ready to go regardless of his condition, so make sure you keep an eye on the animated coach "rolling" the sideline.

Getting back to the younger Hunter. The junior guard with huge offensive chops is averaging 19.8 ppg, 4.8 rpg and 3.6 apg in leading the Sun Belt champs. While an extended stay in the tournament could lock up Hunter's status as a 1st-round pick in this June's draft, don't be surprised if he does enough in NBA scouts minds regardless of the outcome vs Baylor.

Cinderellas to "Swipe Right" On

From everything I mentioned above, Georgia State isn't the worst pick as the West region's potential Cinderella team. With the combination of Hunter, Kevin Ware (Sun Belt tournament MVP) and perhaps Georgia State's second NBA-hopeful, Ryan Harrow (former Kentucky pg), this is far from your average Sun Belt team. By the way, how great is it to see Kevin Ware (see injury while playing for eventual champion Louisville in 2013) back in the tournament? It's fantastic he's been able to resume any career at all, given the issues he's had following that brutal injury.

Much like Tinder, I've teased you far more than I probably should have because despite my well-wishes for the Panthers, I couldn't find the courage to put them ahead of Baylor in any of my brackets.

But, hey, if you're looking for an incredible long-shot Cinderella story, you can't do any better than a team with a father/son combo, two transfer players from national contending programs and one of which just so happened to sustain the most gruesome sports injury's caught on TV. Elite Eight Prediction

#1 Wisconsin vs #2 Arizona

Basketball Gods...please let this happen!

I don't even care who really comes out of this one because no matter what I know it will be another insanely entertaining battle. Not to mention, I think these are the two programs with the tournament's best chance at knocking off Kentucky.

Although Arizona fields a much different team than last year's edition (no Aaron Gordon, no Nick Johnson); they're bigger, deeper and better on both sides of the ball.

With stud lottery-bound freshmen Stanley Johnson leading a balanced attack along with Brandon Ashley, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, T.J. McConnell, Gabe York & Kaleb Tarczewski; all hovering around the double-digit mark in scoring, the Wildcats are without a doubt the deepest team outside of the OTHER Wildcats from Kentucky.

Expect another classic in the South final with strong performances by Wisconsin's Kaminsky, Sam Dekker and Nigel Hayes. In the end, it will be the outside shooting, speed, length & incredible depth of Arizona that wins out.
