+ MUSIC: TA-KU - 50 DAYS FOR DILLA (VOL. 2)

Local producer Ta-ku has been releasing a solid stream of quality beats for the past few years, with his production appearing on projects for the likes of Illy and Cyhi Da Prynce, this man is defintiely one to watch. Earlier this year he decided to pay tribute to one of the most revered and loved producers in hip-hop, J Dilla by releasing a new beat each day for 50 days straight. The result was the very dope 50 Days for Dilla. Now Ta-ku has just released volume 2 (Days 26-50) digitally for the masses. In the project Ta-ku mixes "signature Dilla-esque drum swings, melodic transitions, and creative sampling in his tribute to the late producer". This project has definitely been one of my highlights of 2012 thus far and volume 1 was playing non-stop in my car for weeks on end. These are the perfect laid back beats to work, chill or party to and you don't have to necessarily like hip-hop or have heard much Dilla music before to appreciate the time and effort that has gone into this project. Yes, I'm back! I finally have a bit of spare time on my hands so thought it was time to lace everyone with a few new gems, starting with this dope mixtape. The London 2012 Olympic Games are just around the corner and I don't know about you guys but I've most definitely got Olympic fever! In celebration of the upcoming games DJ, producer and remix master Mick Boogie has linked up with Hypetrak to release this 18-track mixtape titled Represent The Stripes. The mixtape has been inspired by adidas Originals (hence the title) and is dedicated to the US Olympic team. Now, the tape is quite hip-hop heavy but you don't need to be a fan of hip-hop or the US Olympic team to enjoy the music offered here, there's something for everyone. Hands down one of the best interviewers I've ever seen, the man, the myth, the legend that is Nardwuar "The Human Serviette" hit up the 2012 SXSW music and film festival in Austin, Texas this past couple of weeks. While he was there he interviewed a bunch of great hip-hop acts and I've picked out his interviews of 4 of my favourite MC's at the moment Action Bronson, A$AP Rocky, Danny Brown and Kendrick Lamar. Narwuar delivers these interviews in his customary quirky "show and tell" style and his research is once again second to none. It's always awesome to see the surprise on the artists' faces when he pulls out a little known fact or a significant piece of music memorabilia from their childhood. Continuing on the R&B tip, Usher recently released a new track "Climax" which is the lead single from his upcoming album "The Shanertance". The track which was produced by Mad Decent head honcho "Diplo" and is genuinely the best thing I've heard from Usher since his Confessions album way back in 2004. Even if you're not an Usher fan there's no denying Climax is a real slow burner. Don't anaylyse it, just listen to it and get a bit of good R&B back in your life. + MUSIC: FRANK OCEAN - WHIP APPEAL

First post in quite some time, but how could I resist posting another Frank Ocean banger? This time the Odd Future crooner has dropped the track "Whip Appeal" which was previously rumoured to appear on the deluxe edition of his very dope "Nostalgia, Ultra" album. This track definitely needs to be played loud while you're cruising in your whip late at night. Ocean is killing it right now, he's got his fingers in countless pies for other artists yet he continues to put out bonafied R&B hit after hit. He's by far the pick of the Odd Future crew (well in my opinion Ocean and Earl Sweatshirt are the only two good things to come from Odd Future) and definitely one to keep an eye on. + MUSIC: TENDA MCFLY - GETTINGMAD (MIXTAPE)

So this particular mixtape, "GetingMAD" by Tenda McFly ended up coming across my virtual desk in September after a referral by my man Spoz of Spoz's Rant fame. I gave it a few spins back then and was pleasantly surprised but I've only just gotten around to posting it up on the site. McFly describes himself as a:
21 year old rap artist and spoken word poet from Brisbane. My music borrows a lot from other genre's and can be best described as an amalgamation of indie pop culture and hip hop. My influences range from the xx, phoenix and miike snow to Theophillus London, Jamie-T and Kanye West.
According to McFly the The 13 track mixtape is inspired the 1976 film The Network and is "centered on the concept of accessing the emotion of madness and expressing a discontentment with the current state of affairs".

I'm always up for giving young, up and coming artists some props at The Benjamins so urge you all to check out the this tape. Sure it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea but McFly has potential and plenty of room to grow and mature as an artist. + MUSIC: FRANK OCEAN - THINKING ABOUT YOU (VIDEO)

OK, so I might be more than a little bit late with this video but as I'm a big Frank Ocean fan I thought it was well worth highlighting. So the story goes that Odd Future member, Ocean initially leaked "Thinking About You" onto the interweb back in July and it was later revealed that the song was actually a reference track for Roc Nation arist, Bridget Kelly's debut album. Then in September High 5 Collective released the official video clip for the song. So who knows where this this track will end up, all you need to know is that it's Frank Ocean and it's good. The video is unsurprisingly weird involving some vengeful Native Americans, catatonically sick children and of cource Ocean, making a brief appeareance as a male nurse. This is definitely one of my favourite tracks of 2011 so stay tuned to see if this makes it into my best singles of 2011 list, which I'm currently compiling. + PHOTOGRAPHY: BACKYARD OASIS - THE SWIMMING POOL IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 1945-1982 (EXHIBITION)

The "swimming pool", nothing says summer like going for a delightful swim on a stinking hot day at a person's place who is lucky enough to have a backyard pool and who quickly becomes your best friend when the weather is hot and the days are long. So what better way to celebrate the great tradition of backyard swimming pools than an exhibition and that's exactly what the "Palm Springs Museum" has done with the opening of Backyard Oasis: The Swimming Pool in Souther California 1945-1982. Backyard Oasis showcases a series of photographs of pools in Southern Califronia from the past 30+ decades. The exhibition depicts a wide and varied range of images, from Tony Alva skating a pool to 1950's architecture and numerous private residences. The photographs illustrate the role that the ubiquitous swimming pool has played, and continues to play in California culture.

+ WHERE ARE YOU BENNY? (THE "AH WHAT THE HELL, IT'S CHRISTMAS" EDITION)

As we near the festive season many of you may have noticed that things have been a little quiet around The Benjamins of late. Well I'm here to reassure you that everything is still OK and I'm still kicking on. My extremely busy schedule over the past couple of months has unfortunately prevented me from putting a great deal of time into the blog. However with some time off over the Christmas season, you readers should see a whole lot more content on the site as I endeavour to clear my way through a monstrous backlog of posts. I'm even hoping to bring back everyone's favourite weekly series, Throwback Thursday.

It's also with this little announcement that I thought I'd take the opportunity to wish all you readers a very merry festive season! May all your bellies be full of delicious food and may you all get some awesome presents from Santa. At this special time of the year also take some time to think about those less fortunate than us and remember that Christmas isn't all about the presents and material possessions, for you it may be about celebrating the birth of Christ or simply spending some quality time with your loved ones, appreciating the smaller things in life and being thankful for making it through another year. Most importantly enjoy yourself and be safe if you are travelling over the Christmas/New Year period. So it's onward and upward to better things and in the words of the great Dennis Franz "ah what the hell, it's Christmaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasss!"

+ MEDIA: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES - TRAILER 2 (VIDEO)

The second trailer for arguably one of the most anticipated movies of 2012 and the conclusion t Christopher Nolan's reboot of the franchise, Batman: The Dark Knight Rises has been released to the masses. The trailer looks pretty epic and it gives us a first hand look at Batman's enemies for this movie in the form of Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) and Bane (Tom Hardy). I also have to take this opportunity to give a special thanks to Ryan Ingram. As a result of his Michael Caine impression I don't think I'll ever be able to take another monologue by the actor seriously again. + MUSIC: MICK BOOGIE - MY ADIDAS: A TRIBUTE TO RUN-DMC

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of legendary hip-hop group Run-DMC's ode to their sneaker of choice "My Adidas", Adidas have released a special edition Adidas x Run-DMC Superstar 80's "My Adidas" sneaker. However that's not the main point of this post, to continue the celebration DJ Mick Boogie has also released a very dope mixtape aptly titled "My Adidas" which pays homage to the pioneering hip-hop group. This isn't just any old compilation mixtape with a few remixes thrown in but a complete re-working of some of Run-DMC's most iconic songs, with the tape featuring cameos from the likes of DJ Jazzy Jeff, Bun B, Rapper Big Pooh, Skillz, Tanya Morgan, GLC, The Kid Daytona and many more. This is another quality release from Mr. Boogie and is definitely a must listen if you're a fan of Run-DMC or hip-hop in general. It's no secret that I've been a huge fan of up and coming remix collective Urban Noize for quite some time now, so I was pretty hyped when they announced the release of their new project, "Brooklyn. Chicago. London (The Urban Noize Remixes)". The release pays homage to Jay-Z, Kanye West & Adele, bringing together all Urban Noize's best remixes from the trio of superstars. As I've mentioned previously remixes or mash-ups like this can be a bit of a hit and miss affair in my books, but yet again Urban Noize come through with the goods, they are truly masters of this kind of music. There's not one bad remix on this release and if you're a fan of Jay-Z or Kanye West or Adele or all three artists this is a must listen. Stream/download Brooklyn. Chicago. A-Trak and Armand Van Helden AKA Duck Sauce are back with the hilarious visuals for their latest single "Big Bad Wolf". The Keith Schofield directed video sees the duo playing the part of some enthusiastic male appendages getting up to all kinds of mischief. This is a genuinely creative and humorous video and it gets especially crazy towards the end (cue the ping-pong ball). Also if you didn't read the "Not Safe For Work" title it's probably not a good idea to watch this at your place of employment unless you have a very lenient boss. American rock duo The Black Keys have announced the follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2010 Brothers album, "El Camino". As well as unveiling the official cover and track-list the band have released a pretty funny fake commercial starring Bob Odenkirk AKA "Saul Goodman" from Breaking Bad which reveals the full details of the album. El Camino, which was co-produced by Danger Mouse will be feature 11 fresh tracks and will be released on December 6 through Nonesuch, while the first single "Lonely Boy" will be revealed on October 26. + MUSIC: BET HIP-HOP AWARDS 2011 CYPHERS

As we near the end of the year there are several events that everyone starts to anticipate - Christmas, New Years..... oh yeah and the annual BET Hip-Hop Awards show which has rolled around once again. Even though the show itself is usually pretty crappy overall there's one segment that everyone always looks forward to and that's the cyphers. Once again BET has brought together some of the best and most respected lyricists to showcase their skills in the cypher. After watching all 9 cyphers I would say that the Shady 2.0 Cypher featuring Yelawolf, Slaughterhouse and Eminem was the pick of the bunch (Eminem was on fire and Royce Da 5'9's "Hi Rihanna" line was classic) although I was genuinely surprised by Chris Brown who is definitely improving as a rapper and Machine Gun Kelly, Skills and B.o.B. all had classic punchlines to finish off their verses. It's a strange combination of song and video with the mellow break-up track put against the backdrop of an all-out gunfight between two lovers, Mr. and Mrs. Smith style. Queensbridge MC Nas has dropped the visuals for his single "Nasty", taken from his upcoming tenth studio album "Life Is Good". The track was originally released way back in June and has been hailed as a long awaited return to form for the rapper. The Jason Goldwatch directed video sees Nas trading in his lavish lifestyle and making a return to his roots and the projects of Queens. The video is somewhat symbolic, mirroring the rapper's return to the raw hip-hop sound of his early career. I for one am very much looking forward to hearing Life Is Good when it drops sometime in 2012. + MEDIA: THE AVENGERS TEASER TRAILER

As many of you may already know the new Joss Whedon directed The Avengers movie is currently in post production and to whet our appetites Marvel has released a teaser trailer for the movie. I must say overall the film looks like it's going to be pretty damn cool and Robert Downey Jnr. has a couple of absolutely classic one-liners in the trailer. The Avengers movie will of course feature all your favourite Marvel super heroes - Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, Haweye and Captain America played by a who's who of Hollywood stars including Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson. Check out the full teaser trailer after the jump and look out for the finished movie when it releases in May next year.

+ MUSIC: DAVID DALLAS - FEEL LIKE OASIS

NZ rapper David Dallas has unleashed the new track "Feel Like Oasis" which will appear on the deluxe edition re-release of his very dope "The Rose Tint" album. The new track is produced by Fire and Ice and also features cameos from Tayyib Ali and The Kid Daytona, plus it references Oasis and has a Liam Gallagher sample which will make anything a winner in my books. The deluxe version of The Rose Tint will feature 4 new tracks (including Feel Like Oasis) along with a bonus disc, chock full of instrumentals. Even though I'm an Aussie and D.Dallas is a Kiwi and there's is a long standing rivalry between the two countries I can honestly say that he's a true talent and one of most talented artist's around, and both Something Awesome and The Rose Tint were quality albums. So there you go, that's the one and only time I'm going to talk up a New Zealander, and if you see the man tell him to do the right thing and come and do a show in Adelaide, sometime soon. + EVENT: SNEAKER FREAKER SWAP MEET/FLEA MARKET - OCTOBER 16 AT SOUTH YARRA MARKETS

If you live in Melbourne or will be visiting that neck of the woods this weekend make sure you head on down to the South Yarra markets because the world's number 1 sneaker magazine Sneaker Freaker is putting on another massive swap meet/flea market. There is guaranteed to be plenty of dope sneakers, vintage apparel, toys, bikes and a whole lot more so make sure you bring your cheque book (Although you should probably bring cash, because I can't guarantee you'll be able to pay for items with cheques). The swap meet is on this Sunday 16 October and starts at 10:00am and runs until 5:00pm so there's plenty of time for you to puruse the wears on offer. This is sure to be a huge event and as Sneaker Freaker themselves put it "Always a massive day out, make sure you don't miss out!" If you're a gamer and you like sports titles, you'll know that even though we're barely a week into the month of October it's already been a big month for franchise sports games. The latest release in the EA soccer stable FIFA 12 was released last week and now the best basketball simulation game in the business NBA 2K12 has finally seen the light of day. To celebrate the release of NBA 2K12, the games developers 2K Sports have released a bunch of amusing video clips which feature Young Money rapper Drake and NBA legend Michael Jordan along with a host of other people debating which NBA team was truly the greatest of all time. This is to promote the fact that for the first time thanks to 2K12, gamers will be able to take control of some of the most iconic players in NBA history, including Hakeem Olajuwon. Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan and put them against other classic and modern-day teams to finally settle the debate and find out who is greatest team of all time. To celebrate with the long awaited commencement of the second season of How To Make It In America, HBO has released a parody video of the Duck Sauce hit Barbra Streisand featuring star of the show and all round awesome hombre, Luis Guzman. Like the original the video features a host of celebrity cameos including Mark Wahlberg, Kid Cudi, Bryan Greenberg, Lake Bell, Victor Rasuk, Duck Sauce, Q-Tip, Pharrell Williams, Asher Roth, Pusha T and Justin Beiber.
