The Berlin Guidebook http://blog.urban-apartments.com Blog about Berlin by urban-apartments.com Thu, 20 Nov 2014 19:03:00 +0000 de-DE hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.9.2 Cookie opens Crackers http://blog.urban-apartments.com/crackers/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=crackers http://blog.urban-apartments.com/crackers/#comments Thu, 20 Nov 2014 18:33:30 +0000 http://blog.urban-apartments.com/?p=2153 When Heinz Gindullis came to Berlin in 1992, the 20-year-old opened his first bar Biskuits in the tiny cellar of his house in Auguststrasse. Because he had to wash dishes in the Jewish restaurant Oren all other days, the bar was only open on Tuesdays. The people ignored Heinz naming – his bar was called Dienstagsbar or just Cookies and himself Cookie. So he named his next bar Cookies and started a great career as one of the most creative club owners and gastro gurus with always changing concepts ever since. Seven removals later, the Cookies, which closed down as a club the 19th of July this year – reopened its doors as restaurant for molecular cuisine, served with goldenware Crackers, like his last private club on Heidestrasse. On Tuesday, of course.

Cookie owns now a trio of restaurants, all run by his congenious Chef de Cuisine Stephan Hentschel: The not only breakfast place Chipps on Jaegerstrasse, the famous Cookies Cream upstairs – vegetarian haute cuisine, which has just been awarded with 14 points by the Gault Millau. And now the Crackers, where you can get the most loved dishes of Cookies and his friends. The place is entered through the kitchen which looks like a huge swimming pool on the ex dance floor, in the end you find the bar, where you can start the evening with finest cocktails. The design of Laura Rave and Jörg Schumann is aiming to feel well at a great evening with friends. The neon yellow chair and table legs as well as the petrol benches looks softly in this light – they fit perfectly to the aquamarin tiles in the kitchen. And the tables are stable enough to dance on them, which is sure allowed, when the DJs start on four nights a week – as already tested by Cookies himself on the hilarious party, exactly 20 years after the opening of Biskuit. Congratulations and wishing you a good start.

Then you’re just in the right place at Berlin highest Bar 203 or the restaurant Sphere in the TV tower, which was just renovated for its 45th birthday. From 203 meters above the ground you have a breathtaking panorama look out over the entire city – you can see the Parliament building Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate Brandenburger Tor and the Main Railway Station Hauptbahnhof from here, as well as the Red City Hall Rotes Rathaus, the Museum Island Museumsinsel, the Berlin Dome Berliner Dom and many more. And you don‘t even have to move, because the place rotates once an hour. As a Berliner you don’t do this very often, but yesterday a friend invited us to party her birthday and so we started out in the pretty cool 70ties bar with with a perfect pink sunset and stayed until midnight – letting the stars circle around us.

Kraftwerk at Neue Nationalgalerie http://blog.urban-apartments.com/kraftwerk-nationalgalerie/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=kraftwerk-nationalgalerie http://blog.urban-apartments.com/kraftwerk-nationalgalerie/#comments Fri, 07 Nov 2014 07:59:07 +0000 http://blog.urban-apartments.com/?p=2114 The legendary quartet Kraftwerk plays their farewell blues at Neue Nationalgalerie before the renovation. Planned are eight spectacular concerts by the electro pioneers from January 6 to 13 – afterwards the famous Mies van der Rohe building will be closed for several years due to renovations. As the Neue Nationalgalerie announced yesterday, the musicians will in eight concerts present their eight albums in chronological order: From Autobahn, 1974 to Tour de France 2003. Besides a performance with the robots, there will be 3D projections, which shall lead us into a dialogue with the impressing architecture of the space. 3D-glasses will be provided at the entrance. Kraftwerk, founded in 1970 by Ralf Huetter and Florian Schneider in Duesseldorf, are considered as pioneers of modern electronic music. On the night of 14 to 15 November from midnight on there is the opportunity to purchase a limited number of tickets in front of Neue Nationalgalerie. The official online presale is handled exclusively through kraftwerk.tickets.de and begins on 15 November 9 am. Seems, that one of the biggest art and music events of 2015 already takes place in January – we are electrified.

Kate Moss: The Icon http://blog.urban-apartments.com/kate-moss-the-icon/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=kate-moss-the-icon http://blog.urban-apartments.com/kate-moss-the-icon/#comments Wed, 05 Nov 2014 18:37:32 +0000 http://blog.urban-apartments.com/?p=2106 It seems impossible to get tired of seeing the legendary member of the league of supermodels Kate Moss. A visit to the exhibition Kate Moss: The Icon is therefore a more than welcome change to gray November days. Initiators of the tribute in pictures are the galerie hiltawsky in Berlin – at the same time an exhibition – and Ono Arte Contemporanea in Bologna. The recordings from the earliest model days, which are the focus of the exhibition, make the visitors aware how long Kate Moss – she was discovered at the age of 14 years on JFK Airport in New York – has lost none of her charisma. The photographies of Moss, including works by Jurgen Ostarhild, Chris Levine, Satoshi Saïkusa and Albert Watson, illustrate the many sides of the model icon, sometimes playful and tender, sometimes sensual and elegant.

Lemongrass and Onsen http://blog.urban-apartments.com/lemongrass-onsen/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=lemongrass-onsen http://blog.urban-apartments.com/lemongrass-onsen/#comments Mon, 03 Nov 2014 11:30:18 +0000 http://blog.urban-apartments.com/?p=2091 After having heard a lot about it, we finally checked out the Gastro-Gold Europe decorated sushi and thai restaurants Lemongrass and Onsen in Friedrichshain yesterday. Since you get two menu cards and can order everything from both places, the choosing ceremony in our group of twelve took quite a while. Since many of our friends live around the corner, we got a lot of recommendations and were extremely positive surprised. The meals are a little adapted to European taste, but fresh and in the Lemongrass you can watch the open kitchen while all Thai people are working very fast. Everything is cooked at the moment and all the dishes are big size. Since we sat in the more quiet Onsen next door, the service has to run a lot between the two places and the Thai ones took a little longer than our choice mainly from the Japanese menu, but is was all so friendly, that we did not care. Finally the table was full of food and favorites on the Thai side were Tom Kha Gai soup, Bun Bo with marinated beef and one of the best Phad Tais with duck I ever had in Berlin. From the Japanese card we loved the scallops with spinach, the fried Gyoza and many of the fantasy named sushis like The last Samurai. And when my chinese fortune cookie told me in the end, that my life will be happy and content, I was sure that we will soon return to this Asian fusion food place to get more of that.

royals & rice – Vietnamese Rice Bar and Coffee http://blog.urban-apartments.com/royals-and-rice/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=royals-and-rice http://blog.urban-apartments.com/royals-and-rice/#comments Thu, 30 Oct 2014 16:36:54 +0000 http://blog.urban-apartments.com/?p=2070 The royals & rice, a new restaurant concept by Nguyen Ngoc Duc and Le Yang, has in less then six month established as one of our favorite lunch break places on Torstrasse. While we used to sit on the couch in the backyard in summertimes, we now get used to the beton, copper and wood chic inside of the cozy and modern and young restaurant. The classic Vietnamese cuisine is pepped up with modern accents and a coffee bar – for the ones who don’t want to go back to the office after lunch, free WIFI is offered. In the always freshly prepared dishes with a lot of vegan variations no flavor enhancers are used. Today, we had our all-time-favorites summer rolls with warm rice and sate sticks, followed by a delicious peanut pepper curry and a heartwarming Vietnamese Pho Ga – the famous noodle soup dish with chicken. The Vietnamese house coffee was served as always by the friendly and trained baristas and we could not resist the sweet temptation of the chai cheese cake. Được mùa chớ phụ ngô khoai.
