If you're a right handed person you will use the left hand for constructing chords. The fingers of the left hand are bent and you will be pressing down on the strings on the fret board.

The guitar neck's back is curved, so that your hand will naturally conform with the shape of its neck. Your thumb should arch over the top of the neck when you hold it properly. From there, your thumb is in position for constructing chords.When you are constructing chords it is ok to press your thumb into the back of the guitar neck, albeit this is more in common with playing guitar scales. You should try both thumb positions and then you will be able to use the one that is most comfortable for you.

Strum the strings with your right hand to make sounds. Position your right arm over the body of the guitar. Your right bicep should rest on the top of the guitar. Position your right hand in front of the guitar's sound hole. When playing guitar, the sound comes out of the sound hole.

Many people chose to play guitar with a pick. In order to use a pick it should be held between the forefinger and thumb of your dominant hand. Then the pick is pulled across the strings in order to "strum". It is similar to plucking, but more pressure is necessary then you would use with just your fingers.

If you're left handed, you'll be happy to know that guitars are available for left-handed players. If you can't find a suitable one for playing guitar left-handed, simply buy a regular guitar and have re-stringing done to reverse the order of the strings.

When playing guitar, holding the instrument properly as well as maintaining a good posture permits you to play longer, which will be crucial to achieving the correct tone. Get into the habit of starting properly and it will serve you well.

The form of musical notation specific to the guitar is acoustic guitar tabs, or tablature. Each chord is notated with one tab, a small chart of the guitar strings themselves. The string at the top of the diagram is the one furthest from your body as you hold the guitar. Each string will show a number, which is the fret you should hold to create that chord. If you see a zero, that means an open string. An X means that string should be muffled.

The area between the two metal bars on the neck or fingerboard of a guitar is called a fret, if you are not familiar with this. On an acoustic guitar, there are usually 21 to 24 frets. The dots on the frets are visual guides for your convenience when playing.

Although looking at acoustic guitar tabs the first time may seem very confusing, with a little time you can become very good at it.  One thing you first need to learn is when the numbers are listed  one after another that tells you which fret to use and to pluck that string individually.  If the numbers on the line are stacked on top of each other vertically, the acoustic guitar tab is letting you know that you need to play all of those notes at the same time.

When researching acoustic guitar tabs you will find things like hammer-ons, pull-offs, bends and slides. The letter "h" notates hammer-ons. This might be noted on a line as 7h9. Pull-offs are noted in the same way by the letter "p". Bends are notated by "b"s and slides,  "/" (slash).

After you’ve gotten accustomed to the notion of reading music by string position, search online for basic acoustic guitar tabs and find a tune you’re really familiar with to practice on. While the approach may be new to you, you’ll see that you can pick up its melody quickly this way now that you can read tabs.

Chord diagrams help to communicate what acoustic guitar chords need to be played and when.  Guitar tabs used with electric guitars and the chord diagram used for acoustic guitars look similar, but do have their diffrences.  The chord diagram for an acoustic guitar will be written vertically from top to bottom.  The guitar tabs for a electric guitar are written out horizontally.  Both types of chord diagram look like a group of horizontal and vertical lines.  The horozontal likes mark each fret while the vertical lines mark the strings on your guitar and where each string should be held down there will be a dot.

The acoustic guitar chord diagram will display six lines with numbers on those lines. The lines represent the stings from top to bottom of the guitar neck, and the numbers represent which finger is to be used on the string to produce a chord. 1 indicates that the index finger should be used, 2 for the middle finger, 3 for the ring finger, 4 for the pinky finger, and T for rare instances that the thumb is used. O represents an open string that is played, and strings marked with an X are not played.

One acoustic guitar chord you will use frequently is G major. This chord uses three fingers of your left hand: the middle finger on the third fret of the sixth string, the index finger on the second fret of the fifth string, and the ring finger on the third fret of the first string. Leave the other three strings open. Then play all six strings, one at a time. You should be able to hear the chord clearly. If you hear buzzing or rattling, adjust your fingers on the frets. Move your finger down the string or try pressing the strings down harder on the fingerboard if the tone sounds off. Check to see that your fingers aren't touching each other or any of the other strings. Then when all the notes sound in tune, give them a strum all at once. You've just played a G-major acoustic guitar chord.

The chord E-minor is considered to have easier fingering than the others. Use your index finger to hold down the fifth string on the second fret and your middle finger to hold down the fourth string on the second fret. Both fingers need to have plenty of room on the fret and can not touch each other. Try the notes out and alter your fingering a bit until it sounds right to you.  Finally, strum the E-minor chord. You will note right away the dark sound associated with this acoustic guitar chord. With a little practice, you will have this chord down in no time.

There are only a few basic acoustic guitar chords you need to learn. These include C-major, D-major, A-minor, and A-major. You should familiarize yourself with them by moving back and forth between these acoustic guitar chords.   With practice, you will commit them to memory and playing will go more smoothly.

Learning an instrument and a guitar specifically, can be a wonderful experience that fills you with the joy of achievement.  Remember when first learning the acoustic guitar chords you will need to start off slow, and eventually, your fingers will get in place by themselves. With some practice, your fingers will be moving quickly across these acoustic guitar chords.

The best way for acoustic guitar tuning is to use an electronic tuner.  The electronic tuner has a built in microphone and as you strum on each string, the indicator will show you how close you are to the correct pitch, showing you whether you are flat or sharp.  Then by turning the tuning key for each string and doing a bit of tweaking until the tuner shows that you are are now in tune.

Keep in mind that one always tunes up, which means going from looser to tighter till it’s in tune. If it becomes too tight, don’t just unwind it a little bit to try to improve it (called “tuning down”). It works far better to give the string some play and then start tightening it again till it’s right. When you tune up, not only are your results more accurate, but you also help the string hold its tuning longer.

You’ll need a way of getting the reference pitch even if you prefer to train yourself to do acoustic guitar tuning by ear.  An already tuned second guitar, a piano, a tuning fork, and an in-tune MP3 will all work, but an electronic tuner is consistently more reliable. However, an excellent method for developing your ear is to attempt to tune the instrument by ear first and then check it out using the tuner.

To begin tuning your guitar, use the refence pitch to tune the sixth string (the thickest string) to low E. Once this string sounds right, the other strings can be tuned to their correct pitch based on that note. There is a reason why this technique works, but the explanation is long. Acoustic guitar tuning is a bit like driving. You don't have to understand the internal combustion engine to drive a car, and you don't have to understand music theory to tune your guitar.

Then proceed with your acoustic guitar tuning as follows:

1. After verifying the guitar is in tune, play it on the fifth fret. Use that as a basis to tune the open fifth string. 2. Using the fifth string as a guideline, play the fifth fret on that to tune your fourth string. 3. Use the fifth fret on the fourth string to tune the third. 4. Pay close attention here, because there's a bit of a change. The third string should be played using the fourth fret to tune the open second string. 5. Changing it up again- return to playing the fifth fret, only using the second string this time, to tune the first string.

If you're just starting out with acoustic guitar tuning, you may want to ask someone at the music store when you purchased your guitar to show you how to do acoustic guitar tuning the proper way. Then just keep practicing until you're comfortable with the process. It takes time and practice to learn to do acoustic guitar tuning, especially by ear. For the novice, the simplest way to perform acoustic guitar tuning is with the use of an electronic tuner. You can find one for around $20 and you will definitely get your money’s worth. An electronic tuner that is made specifically for tuning guitars has the ability to recognize which string is being played.

If you decide that quality is important then one of the best acoustic beginner guitars you can invest in is the Seagull S6.  Priced at around $400-$500, it’s not a play it once and stash in the closet deal.  Definitely pricier than what a beginner might want to spend, but the exceptional quality well justifies the price.  Even professional guitar players who’ve played and owned huge collections of guitars cherish the Seagull S6.  Another high-end acoustic beginner guitar to consider is the Washburn D10S.  In the under $500 range, the Washburn D10S has received the top vote in Acoustic Guitar magazine.
