Roni Size "(Reprazent) in the Mode" Album Review

No, It's not Newforms.
In case anyone's wondering why the reviews are so mixed on this album, I'll clear it all up. Half of us want this album to be "Newforms Part 2" (or Part 3, technically) very badly. The other half of us appreciate the album on its own without the troubling "Newforms" comparison. I'm personally kind of in the middle, as I heard "In the Mode" long before "Newforms." Yes, "In the Mode" is pretty good, yes it's worth buying/ripping/stealing/taping/remixing/whatever, but damn, man. It sure as hell ain't "Newforms." But again, what is?

Rae and Christian "Sleepwalking" Album Review

Blazing the crop
Rae and Christian suffer from some serious sophomore-slumpin' in "Sleepwalking." While their second studio release is not even close to bad -- actually it's fairly good -- it suffers from a lack of new ideas, and some Pharcyde songs that stick out like sore, bloody thumbs.

It opens with a swippy hip-hop intro, "Blazing the Crop," an entertaining little number with what sounds like panpipes. What follows is alternately satisfactory and hilarious, with everything from outrageously genteel falsettos to swooning trip-ballads featuring Kate Rogers and Tania Maria, as well as the trippy, smoldering "Trailing in the Wake."

Unfortunately, there are two songs by the Pharcyde that simply don't fit in with the smoother, mellower hip-hop. "Let It Go" and "It Ain't Nothing Like" meander aimlessly through mellow beats, sounding jagged and uncomfortable. Perhaps it would have been better back in the "Bizarre Ride II" era, but here they sound overworn. And the legendary Bobby Womack does a good job, but it feels like Rae and Christian weren't quite sure how to use his talents.

Rae and Christian broke some new ground with "Northern Sulphuric Soul," a delightful acid hip-hop album. There, they made new inroads and breathed some fresh life into the subgenre. But here, they feel like they are on autopilot... or even worse, out of inspiration.

Fortunately they do turn out some very good material, mostly the layered downtempo numbers, and the hilarious number with the Congos: "Like putting one foot right in front of the othah," in an intensely posh voice over some trippy hip-hop beats. And Rae and Christian duet well with the female singers on here, including the soaring finale with Siron.

Unfortunately, they forge no new territory with "Sleepwalking," and the album is burdened with some songs that should have been cut. Fortunately it redeems itself with some beautiful downtempo songs.

Roni Size and Reprazent "New Forms" Album Review

Changed My Listening
I first borrowed New Forms four years ago with a view to hearing more lush beats driven sounds like displayed in the #8 Heroes track, but without the vocals. On first album listen I didn't get it, the sound, or the form. Left alone for it to settle, on later reflection I realized I had just been taught how to listen to music anew.

Aside from the nice but deceptive sounding #1 Railing (no other track was as conventional) this album struck me after three long borrows, so I now recommend you this double bass jazz step manifesto.

Track wise, I found some parts to be cinematic - # 4 Lets Get It On, #6Matter Of Fact, #7 Mad Cat.
Other times like an epic score - #2 Brown Paper Bag.
I felt it had hype sounding manifesto lyrics like - #1Railing,(`Direct, believe me you ain't heard nothing yet!') #3 New Forms, #8 Heroes.
Into a formulated, and natural sounding blends of jazz step with eerie effects-#5Digital, # Mad Cat.
Killer buildups, and infinite ride through- #12 Morse code, and #13 Destination,
In my opinion very anti-pop, yet deserving of it's hype.
In short a new form.

Of all tunes most notably #6 Matter Of Fact, I found as the plethora point. A python of a song which sounds to me like an invite into the never ending openings of Roni sizes/reprezent Pandora's box. No preparation is enough for this one.

Some people have described Roni's album as a mantra- with its ever-cycling repetition of beats, which can never truly be absorbed by just a few listens. I think Roni Size's/Reprazent New Forms especially disc2 (Roni's own cerebral suite?) has the potential of a lifetime of listens. With the result that the rhythms may get under your skin in such a way that will leave you coming back for more like the track `Mad cat', and `Morse code', do to me ad infinite.

just slightly disappointed
This band's awesome "Breakbeat Science Excercise 6" is what encouraged me to buy this disc. I love the artwork on the disc itself. However, I live continous DnB mixes, and this had segregated songs. You can tell the duo is trying to branch into new genres, or at least not do just typical DnB. However, since I was in a pure DnB mood with them, I was disappointed. Don't get me wrong: I don't hate this disc. It just wasn't heavenly like J. Magik or "Safari" by Bad Company or many Diesel Boy discs. There are some tracks that keep it true to the genre. Those were great.

Fink "Fink Funk" Album Review

Handel Handled by Masters Led by a Soaring Daniels
This is a magnificent recording with an absolute dream cast. Despite its historical context within the late 11th century battles between the Crusades and the Saracens, Handel's "Rinaldo", written in the early 18th century, is actually a fanciful tale of love, devotion and betrayal populated by kings and warriors, fair maidens and sorcerers. It has all the elements of a great period action movie produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.

You need a real vocal swashbuckler in the title role, and countertenor David Daniels is ideally suited with a rarefied voice that is alternately heroic and romantic. With his stunning coloratura and dramatic intensity, it would be hard to imagine anyone better as the conflicted Christian hero Rinaldo, who can lead an entire army to take Jerusalem but still have trouble taking his true love Almirena away from the hands of evil magicians. Daniels is particularly convincing with the music that reflects his deep love for her, in particular, with Rinaldo's famous lament, "Cara sposa, amante cara, dove sei?". The beauty of his timbre really flows out of him in what seems like an effortless manner, and provides proof positive that his is a special talent. As great as he is here, Daniels actually surpassed this performance two years later in David Alden's audacious update of the opera, staged in Munich in 2001 and luckily captured on DVD two years later (also strongly recommended). While not the most ideal interpreter of Handel, superstar mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli displays her supreme technique as Almirena. Her style is famously full of dramatic fire, but one gets the sense that a more plaintive manner would be more appropriate for such a lovelorn character. I kept thinking she could have been better cast as the sorceress Armida were it as important a role. At times, her presence is so overwhelming that she singes some of the more openly yearning arias with her bravura technique and amazing range. Ironically though, she and the more delicately toned Daniels meld together perfectly on their brief duets, notably "Scherzano sul tuo volto", and she certainly delivers the goods on the sonorous "Lascia ch'io pianga", likely the most definitive recorded version on the market now.

In a "pants" role, i.e., a female playing a male, mezzo-soprano Bernarda Fink convincingly plays the Christian army general Goffredo, who almost acts like the chorus for all the action. Although the role is a bit passive, she lends a beautiful tone to all her pieces. Soprano Luba Orgonasova plays Armida, a sorceress that requires a singer to convey a concurrent sense of sensuality and melodrama, especially as she seduces and then falls in love with the stalwart Rinaldo. She falls a bit short though not at the sacrifice of communicating the fury of feelings which cause her change of heart. Quite impressive is baritone Gerald Finley, who is pitch perfect and provides clear diction as Argante, the King of Jerusalem. Perhaps because his voice is so dramatically deeper than anyone else's in the cast, he fully captures the dominating presence of his character. Amazingly there are two other countertenors in this stellar cast, which just shows how versatile this voice type truly is. Bejun Mehta brings a velvety quality to his aria, "Andate, o forti, fra stragi e morti"; and Daniel Taylor, with his choirboy innocence, does as well as he can in the least interesting role of Goffredo's brother Eustazio, especially with the lovely "Siam prossimi al porto", which opens Act II.

I love how characters will sing successive couplets culminating in some amazingly dulcet tones. Sound effects of thunder and battle and even simulations of birdsongs provide effective bridges between pieces and acts. Special praise should go to conductor Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music for the authentically dramatic sound of the period instruments. This is one of Handel's great early works, and we are lucky to have it preserved in such an exemplary manner here. Make sure to reserve three hours of your time to listen to this opera in total as it should be experienced. An absolute must-have for Baroque music aficionados.

(11.30.05) Over the years, Ed Rush and Optical have been renowned for their leading role in producing some of the darkest drum'n'bass, but also for regularly losing the DATs of their studio productions. Back in 1998-'99 there was also a site dedicated to all the unreleased Virus stuff, called The Place To Be (allegedly coming back very soon), and i remember spending hours of internet connection at my high school listening to all those dubplates on crap speakers with my friends, addicted to distorted bass. So it's kinda strange listening to Virus Vaults now; I do remember with nostalgia tracks like "Vendetta," "Zoner" and "Side Effect" and finally after something like seven years I can appreciate them in full effect on my stereo. It's really what I always wanted, plus the big surprise when listening to unheard tunes that sound fresh and fat, showing no sign of time.

Still, it's not enough. There are two major faults in this release that prevent Virus Vaults from reaching the absolute masterpiece status while scoring nonetheless a really superb album. First, the inclusion of a track like "Flute," dated 2005, shows sadly that the creative vein of the duo nowadays seems to be gone. It's not far from all the so-called new jump-up stuff going on these days, that only means a scarce production in favour of a (supposed) dancefloor effect, but to me it's plain boring material, repeating itself over and over. Second, there's a mix CD, which is indeed a good idea, since not all the unreleased tracks could have been recovered from dusty DATs or crackling warped dubplates, and it would have been nice to get all the remaining dubs mixed together. The problem is that it's mixed in a fast as you can fashion, a good thing when you see Andy C or DJ Friction live, but it's complete nonsense when you want to hear the perfection of sick tunes like "Slip Thru Rmx (Amenizer)," "Sonar VIP" or "Rigmasher," the Holy Grails of drum'n'bass. A couple of minutes don't do justice to such beautiful works.

So, the only solution is to focus on CD one and rinse to death the mysterious "Vendetta," the Hancock inspired twisted funk of "Headhunters," the heavy distortions and the massive beats of "Can U?" and "Side Effect," or the ominous darkness of "Big Slick." Not to talk about the absolutely incredible "K-Wire" and "Zoner," the first is a relentless assault of menacing alien bass driven by infinite layers of breaks and percussions, the latter is an unstoppable crescendo from a quite stepper to a growling technoid monster. And obviously you can't forget the nice addition of "Gro-Bag," heard in the Wormhole mix and now in complete form, and "Hitek Dreams," previously published on the glorious Prototype and always a classic. In the end, I really love this record despite the aforementioned flaws, but the best work from the duo will always be Wormhole. I think "Kranzor" has done TOO many drugs to realize you shouldn't need that to listen to EDM....... Sounds like it has taken over your personality....... It takes someone smart and strong to be able to over-come the bad aspects of the rave scene. OH, AND BY THE WAY, go tell the doctors and business owners in the scene that they don't have real jobs. They'll probably laugh at you, waving their $100,000 in your face. (this last paragraph is just for "Kranzor" - hope no one takes offense to it) I've been around far too many jaded losers to agree with their crapping on my beloved scene...

ANYWAY, I loved this CD. Aphrodite is one of my favorite Dj's, track #8 is hot, hot, hot!!!!!! This CD is more of a dirty drum and bass rather than funky, or hip hoppish...

I have "Move n' Rhythm" playing on a website of mine, I always get questions from random people asking who is playing. I always recommend this CD to them!!

Future Loop Foundation "Phunk Roc" Album Review

FLF rises above the crowd!
Future Loop Foundation provides another great CD. Without question one of the more interesting drum n' bass acts out there, this record is much more uptempo than his debut cd "Time and Bass" (there is a 2nd cd as well, that i've never had much luck finding!?). Parts of this disc are very intense, heavy cuts, along with a collection of mellower tracks. FLF has always made extremely interesting records, and this is no exception. Not really well known here in America unfortuneatly. If you're looking for some adventurous yet slamming drum n bass, check this out!

Various Artists "Modern Living" Album Review

Not your grandson's electronic music
For those who are unacquainted, this set is the gateway into an entirely new experience of sound. Few listeners, and likely not many practitioners, for that matter, of dance, techno, and trance fully appreciate the extent to which "electronic music," as we know it, was borne from the world of avant-garde classical music...

...and don't expect a killer drum and bass rhythm section on any of these pieces. As you'll soon learn from listening to this box set and reading the ample liner notes (with intro by Brian Eno, no less), the origins of electronic music were anything but simple, or dull. The set takes off by introducing a couple standard-ish classical pieces which put to use some of the first electronic instruments invented. The theremin and ondes martinot (a small keyboard-based instrument which was a distant precursor to the synth) are featured in the first two tracks, respectively, and after that the set moves into some of the different movements and styles developed throughout the middle part of the 20th Century.

Track three is by Pierre Schaeffer. For all you dance and techno buffs out there, this was the first man ever to loop a track, play a track back in reverse, or use a host of other effects which are all common tools for musicians of today. His "Etude Aux Chemins de Fer," or "Railroad Study," is a field recording of various train sounds which was manipulated by Schaeffer in his Paris studio. He developed this method of documenting found sounds and applying various effects to them, dubbing it "Musique Concrete." The process caught on fast. John Cage uses the same method in "Williams Mix," but organizes the sounds in random, rapid succession according to complex principles of chance. This piece is absolutely jarring. Another amazing example of musique concrete is Hugh le Caine's "Dripsody," a virtuosic piece composed from the repetition and manipulation into different pitches of the sound of a single drop of water.

Before entering the age of synthesizers, there is some fine tape-music in the form of Varese's "Poeme Electronique," a fantastically subtle blend of found sounds and instruments grossly manipulated by tape cuts, as well as Richard Maxfield's "Sine Music," a sort of pointillist tape piece which rearranges the sound of a sine wave.

Shortly following the era of musique concrete, synthesizers were being brought into development. One of the first synth pieces on the Ohm set is an excerpt from Milton Babbitt's "Philomel," a complex serialist work scored for female voice and the Mark II synthesizer, (one of the earliest ever developed, to which Babbitt had sole access for a time). "Cindy Electronium" by Raymond Scott is another highlight, which uses Scott's own "Electronium," a "spontaneous composing and performing machine," as he described it, developed half a century ago. As you will notice when hearing this track, the Electronium was capable of producing electronic sounds which sounded as modern as anything churned out by the electronic musicians of today. Also provided in the synth category is a sample of Morton Subotnick's infamous "Silver Apples of the Moon," one of the most popular electronic pieces ever recorded.

The later tracks on this box set delve into digital computer pieces and soundscapes. Paul Lansky's "Six Fantasies" is a rather haunting piece for robotic-sounding voices harmonically enriched using early computer technology, and David Behrman's "On the Other Ocean," is a brilliantly thought-out improvisation between a solo cellist and a computer program written by Behrman himself, which reacts to the soloist's performance. The four or five tracks rounding out the set can be considered some of the earliest forms of New Age, as these artists used combinations of the earlier techniques to make some of the first intentionally ambient and hypnotic music.

To me, the most fascinating aspect of all of this music is not only the lack of conventionally-produced sound, but also in many cases the complete abandon of traditional compositional form. In 90-95% of the pieces, there exists either no recurring themes, introductions, crescendos, counterpoint, etc., or there exists merely a complete distortion of these standards. This music truly represents everything new and revolutionary we have come to expect from the beginnings of the postmodern era.

The Ohm box set serves as a fantastic historical document and THE definitive entrance point for anyone interested in the origins of electronic music. The fact that edits are occasionally used can be a bit frustrating (the original versions of many of these pieces are loooooong), but some of this music is not available anywhere else, and let's face it: after being infected by the incredible sounds encased here, you'll be searching for all of the artists' original albums, anyway.

Nicolette "DJ-Kicks" Album Review

Solid Music for ears that can Hear!
I am to old to have been to a rave, so most of this music and the artist who make it are fairly unknown to me. So I expected one thing from Nicollete based on Massive Attacks Protection. Like many others I got something else, though I have to say that this time I liked the surprise. Yes, I heard people howl about drum and bass for one reason or another, but that's because so many people have demonstrated how "bad" it can get. Nicollete brings us only the "cream" of a very diverse crop called by many names(techno,trip-hop,drum and bass,down tempo, it's all rather confusing to me). I 'll bypass the labels and get down to the music. It's adventurous in a time when major record moguls want anything but adventure, and fortunately Nicollete leaves the mixing to Plaid, the production duo who also contribute to this mix. I'll admit to having "problems" relating to Aphex Twin, but over all this is a pretty daring project done well(even if you didn't care for the monolouge) and well worth the money.

Good Laid back Drum N' Bass
I had purchased this on a whim since the reviews were so good, and it was so cheap, and even though I dont think its perfect, its a real solid laid back drum N bass CD. It isnt my favorite Drum N Bass CD, but for the price it is pretty damm good. The one thing that I dont feel is perfect is that it seems to drag a bit in some parts, but then again, I would consider it more to be a "chill out" type of electronica, then straight up drum n bass. If you are looking for something that is similar with a heavy jazz influence, that is a bit more upbeat, then try "History of our World, Part 2" on Smile Records which is mixed by DJ DB. Its old school, I believe that it is almost 10yrs old, but it is still my favorite of all time on the Drum N Bass compliation CD's. ENJOY

(12.05.05.) One of my first reviews here on Igloo was about Dom and Roland's Chronology, and at that time I wished to cover regularly some drum'n bass albums. During these months several d'nb LP's have been released, but none of these convinced me to write a line. The main cause is that everyone in drum'n bass nowadays is settled into a sub-subcategory, from liquid to second wave neurofunk, from wobbly (also called new jump up or mockingly clownstep) to intelligent (but as Klute said, "intelligent? you don't know the meaning"). There have been nice records, Klute, TeeBee and High Contrast made great albums, nonetheless they were overshadowed by their predecessors and you knew exactly how they would sound like before the first drum kicked in. Influx UK and Nu:Tone also did a great job but again it wasn't enough.

So, apart from Virus Vaults (by Ed Rush & Optical) which is mainly a retrospective, the big news came from Planet Mu with the mighty return of Bizzy B and this absolutely stunning Pro Agonist by Exile. Which is not only a d'nb album, but it has its root deep down in the jungle. Exile started some years ago doing average drum'n bass tracks on Moving Shadow and Renegade Hardware that didn't impress me much, but since I heard he was doing wicked live sets mashing up jungle hits with hip hop and pop tunes, processed and reconstructed with handmade software patches, I knew something had changed. The first releases that showed to the world what this guy was capable of were the twisted d'nb of "Broken Language remix" on Planet Mu and "Hanzo Steel Cuts" on Mosquito, that was creative techno at its best.

I was obviously eagerly awaiting for Pro Agonist to come out, and it's a record that will be remembered for seriously kicking drum'n bass' butts. Exile tunes are the most effective and fresh I've heard in a long time, he takes inspiration from breakcore, processing and mangling beats while retaining a drum'n bass texture. "The Forever Endeavour," "Broken Language remix," "Big Bad Purple Bad Boy" and "The Devil's Chimney" are well above the average d'nb material, they will blast any club without the harshness of breakcore. Exile's music is not mere exercise of technicalities nor plain repetition of drumloops, but it's evolving and surprising with layers and layers of sound, explosive breakdowns and produced with a surgical attention to details. This is especially evident in those track more focused on sound design, like "Sure You Did," "Spring Cum Air," "Rage Is The Beautiful Light That Struck Her," "Sliime" and "Merlin," that mix abstract compositions that remind me of Leafcutter John with flashes of breaks and bizarre vocal samples. There are even a couple of tracks that are a hybrid between the dancefloor and the experimental material: "Mushroom Santa" is a joyful and uplifting piece of upbeat electronica while "Silicon Chop" is a sort of reveler dubstep, crafted with the help of Sub Focus. Sub Focus is another guy I rely on when I think of the future of drum'n bass, he will allegedly release an album soon on Ram Records, so that I will hopefully be back with some d'nb review before another year goes by.

Ground Breaking Fast Soul Music
Hospital Records never fails to put out ground breaking soulful drum and bass with a different spin than your more common grimey floorburners. London Elektricity's live performances are without compare and the included DVD - while not A+ quality - does offer good sound quality and a feel for the band on stage and behind the scenes.

This is my favorite London Elektricity album to date. It offers up some of my favorite tracks like Power Ballad and Remember the Future as well as other chart toppers like Strangest Secret and live favorite the Mustard Song.

Dreamy & Drowsy
Not nearly as ambitious as "The K&D Sessions," nor as energized as "DJ Kicks," "Conversions" is Kruder and Dorfmeister at their most introspective. The Austrian duo displays their typical panache with a serving of soulful drum and bass, seamlessly blending a wealth of clean and cool rhythms into something that plays like a single, hour-long anthem to twilight. Although this album is, in true K&D fashion, immaculately presented, it is also the most passive thing they've ever created. The end result is something as drowsy as it is brilliant. Put this record on and you will undoubtedly enjoy it, but it's soothing pulse may put you to sleep long before you have time to reach the end.

Fauna Flash "Aquarius" Album Review

Drum & Bass masterpiece
I can't believe I'm the first person to review this album. This is Fauna Flash's only true "Drum & Bass" album. It's also one of the first compost releases to get play by members of the Metalheadz crew. I would consider this album to be pretty essential in drum & bass headz' collections. The production is flawless, the jungle breaks are tight and on-point, and the analog bass is tearing! Really, the only complaint I'd have on this album is that it only has 9 tracks. The first 7 tracks are drum & bass steppers, and the last 2 are jazzier, more downtempo tracks. The individual tracks are around 6 minutes long on average, so it's not quite as short as it seems. Overall it's an excellent album, and one that I keep in heavy rotation even now.

Techno Dub
I wasn't sure what to expect from this album. Bill's Bass work is very reminicent of his Dub recordings. The difference being instead of the reggae inspired beats you usually find on his Dub CDs, they are backed by fast moving techno grooves provided by Submerged. Although this is an up-beat album I still foung the music to be some what hypnotic. It took me a few listenings to find my place with these recordings. I guess I expect to be challenged by a Bill Laswell CD in the first place, thats why I listen to him.

phenomenal
quite simply one of the best albums of the 90's in any style, electronic or otherwise. leoni laws is a brilliant singer and writer and roni size and dj die are at the peak of their production mastery here -- the perfect partners. one of the very few EDM albums that succeeds both in song craft and total dancefloor destruction. i consider this a desert island disc -- near perfect in artistry and execution. highest recommendation.

Best US DnB album EVER
I know it sounds like an overstatement, but damn, Dara straight up delivered with this album.
The beats have a rough and tumble minimal quality that mix perfectly with the mysteriously soulful edges.
Each song holds it own perfectly, with Kah and Discipline standing out as the strongest of the pack.
This album represents a time and place for DnB in America. Right before the tech step boom, right after the amen jungle craze.
The funk and soul on this album are thick, and I highly suggest it for anyone interested in the history of 1990s DnB.

Photek's Masterpiece
this is all photek was on his debut, "Modus Operandi", but with some dressing added, if you will. while photek is known for Drum n' Bass, there are 2 house tracks and one ambient track on here that are very worthwhile. The opening track, Terminus starts off with beats like none other and by the time it reaches full swing, youll find yourself wanting more. also be sure to check out the house track Mine to Give featuring the awesome voice of Robert Owens. the title track, Solaris is perfect in every way, and is a real chill out song on a great chill out album which is a necessity for those long trips where you have nothing to do and just feel like tuning out to everything around you. Essential for any DnB collection.
This was the CD that got me listening to jungle and DnB. It has intense upbeat energy that is almost funny but is definitely fun. For me the upbeat sound keeps it from feeling too repetitive, but some might not have my love for this CD and get kind of tired after hearing it for awhile. It is in the old jungle style of Dieselboys 'Drum and Bass Selection USA'(I know DnB selection isnt 'jump up' but..generally the same style), but I find this album to be a harder hit and not as drawn out. Turn the subwoofer up and roll with the bass!

Miles Would Approve
Squarepusher revisits Miles' most controversial album "On the Corner" in Music is Rotted One Note. At one time bands would not touch that album, now everyone wants to say they were influenced by it. However, Music is Rotted One Note uses Miles music as a sketchpad for something even darker and disturbing. Unlike Miles this is not a continuous jam. Some tracks are in the vein of dark ambient and one track even sounds like Morton Subotnick. Despite the variety, the album is cohesive. Each track feeds into the next. Though Squarepusher is known for drill 'n' bass, this to me is his best album because it takes Miles' music to new hights that it could have reached.

The Third Eye Foundation "Little Lost Soul" Album Review

Soundtrack for a Foggy Evening
Fans of former Depeche Mode member Alan Wilder and his personal project, "Recoil," should enjoy this haunting album. While Recoil's album structure relies on spoken word vocals to tell a story, "Little Lost Souls" does it without having to say much. If there ever was an album to keep you on the edge of your seat while driving in backwoods country during a crisp, foggy evening, it's this one. 3EF (Third Eye Foundation) carefully constructs eerie ambient soundscapes without ever sounding tired or uninteresting (a problem with some trance-based atmospheric artists).

Atmospheric music can easily be ruined by the overusage of vocals if they dominate the ambience. On "Little Lost Souls," 3EF carefully adds them to give the tracks a more "humane" sound. Never does any track feel forced, nor do they sound typical of the genre. Aphex Twin, who may be a distant cousin to 3EF, can sometimes come across a little weak and "thrown together" as to meet an apparent deadline.

It's an excellent album and I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys "intelligent" techno and/or dark music that could very well appeal to electronic music fans who don't care much for the bright lights of clublife.

When i first saw this cd i thought oooh an import this has potential. So i bought it and found to be quite soothing although it does have some fast breaks. Goldie "Timeless" Album Review

the pinnacle of drum and bass
This cd should be hanging on a wall in some museum because it's not just a collection of songs, it's a musical work of art. The emotion and creative effort that Goldie put into this cd is evident on every track. Each track has a story to tell, starting off with the 21 minute epic journey Inner City Life/Pressure/Jah that is worth the price of the cd by itself.

But don't stop there. I've had this cd for many years and every now and then I "rediscover" it and find something new. It's hard to pick favorites but I've played 'Sensual' more times than any other song in my entire life. The track is so unique in it's structure that I've never heard anything quite like it. 'Sensual' is a perfect title but there are sounds that also invoke a profound sense of longing. Just an incredibly emotional song, a piece of art really.

'Sea of Tears' is stunningly beautiful and complex. Birds, ocean sounds, and guitar give this song a nice atmospheric quality. Another unique and startlingly original composition.

'Kemistry' is a drum n' bass tour de force. Rapid drums and deep bass lines pound away and become increasingly intense as the track progresses until a frenzy of bass and drums is pounding you into submission by the end.

I could go on. There's not a weak track on the whole thing. This cd should never be out of print and it is as I write this. Goldie can be proud that he's forever left his mark with this masterpiece of modern music.

Bass and drum heavy jazz electronic fusion w/lucious tones
This group from Berlin brings a sound where heavy bass jazz meets club and eletctonica with a lucious vocal track. Some tracks such as "Step Into the Gallery" (my fave) and "Playmobile Soldier" from this cd have found their way into cds such as the US release of the Mini Cooper, and various clubs albums and remixes.

With a voice reminisent of Billy Holiday, singer Lisa Bassenge makes a memorable sound flow out of the tracks and soothing your senses and bring a sense of history and the bands jazz roots to the music.

Highly recommendly for lovers of jazz mixes and bass and drums heavy tunes. Bright sound, smart songwriting makes one wonder why this kind of innovation and art is so rare in modern prefabricated music.

Source Direct yes. source dircect
Source Direct were key in defining the technical, breaks driven sound of the mid-90's. Possibly th most sorely missed producers of that era who hung it up a year or so after the release of Exorcise the Demons. Jim returned in 1999 and even resurrected the SD imprint for a run that included the stomper "Yo Bitch" as well as a few others. It was really the labels original series of tunes (Snake style, etc)that pushed the SD sound at its peak. THe platinum breaks selection and subsequently Controlled Developments showed a maturing process which extended to 'Exorcise'. Most fans agree that though SD pushed forward, the prime of their sound is stil the tunes they made from 94-96, Controlled being the only easily obtainable record.

Amazing
I have listened to Fernanda live shows many times, and it still amazes me that she composes her own songs, arranges, performs and sings then so brilliantly. Besides electronic instruments (sinths and stuff like that) she also plays saxophone, piano and guitar. Her lyrical singer training can be seen at the song 1999, and believe me, that is her natural unaltered voice.

FIF at their best
If you're exploring ska, Five Iron Frenzy, or Christian music in general, buy this album. I garuntee you that you will enjoy this album immensely.

This is by far my favorite Five Iron Frenzy album. Light-hearted, upbeat, and yet superbly well written and played. They give off the vibe of a lets-just-scream-our-heads-off-and-have-fun punk band, but they are all extremely good musicians, and their talent shows in the quality of their music.

Fantastic music, artistry, and you can't go wrong with songs like "Kiss Chase" and the all-time favorite "All Ya Favourites". The story of Rob Smith and Ray Mighty, more commonly known as Smith & Mighty, began long before the world became fascinated with Bristol as the central source of the best downtempo and drum&bass the electronic music world has seen to date. It was the innovative precedent that Smith & Mighty brought to Bristol's music community, helping launch artists such as Massive Attack, Roni Size, Portishead and Tricky into the international spotlight. Due to a major label contract dispute, much of their early work was previously unavailable to their fans. Good
I was expecting more too from dillinja before i heard this album. But i still like it because its not a complete let down. Sometimes the beats can feel like they drag on in some dillinja tracks, but they are still nice to listen to. I respect him because it is hard to make these sounds and dirty distortion from scratch into melodies. I would still recommend this album to anyone who wants to hear it, its not dillinjas best, but still worth it. If you want the king of technical production though, thats Andy C lol. Later!

Possible Label Scores A Hit ...
Definetely a hit ... a drum-n-bass hit ... Below The Belt. The Possible Label, ran by Mick Harris of Scorn/Napalm Death fame, releases this album in conjunction with Invisible Records, and it is a very ruff, almost minimalistic DNB journey. Scorn-like major bass lulls up against hard (usually simplistic) breaks and eerie atmospheres. Could be comparable to Dryft (Gridlock sideproject) in certain segments and also a sped up Scorn. 4/5 rating.

Quality Drum and Bass
This CD is a great collection of tracks from one of the best acts to come from LTJ Bukem's Good Looking/Looking Good Label(s). Blu Mar Ten combines awesome drum and bass with the best in floaty, atmospheric textures and tones. Great stuff to drift away to. The first track, "Adrift on Deep Water" is almost a classic, first presented on LTJ Bukem's "Earth Vol. 2" compilation. You really get the idea you are adrift on water somewhere. There are honestly a few tracks near the end that aren't so hot, but "Ir-on-ing" is also another classic for sure, presented first on "Earth Vol. 3". All in all, a definite good buy for someone into the UK drum and bass sound.

Incredible album for dreary cultured ambient D'n'B
This album is amazing! The textures that this duo came up with are intriguing. The mix of soundscapes and odd instrumentation are beautiful like touring the country of Japan in a speedtrain on an over-cast day. I picked this album up when it came out and had it stolen but something in the back of my brain begged me to buy it again. To this day it is a source of inspiration. During every listening session I find some nuance that I had missed before. Kamikaze isn't for everyone and should only be picked up by the most open minded and machine loving audiophile.

Great...
The two CD's on DRUM 'N' BASS: VISIONS represent two "categories"--organic and synthetic. Jazz is the primary source of inspiration on the "organic" disc, as whiz-kid producer John B lays down pulse-quickening drum tracks while real musicians play trumpet, saxophone, and flute lines in looping, often abstract patterns. The result is something like the early '70s work of Miles Davis or Herbie Hancock, but informed by the stricter meters and more insistent repetitions of electronica. As disc 1 progresses, sequenced loops and synth burbles insinuate themselves into the "organic" fabric. There are no "real" instruments to be found (all the sounds are synthesized) on the "synthetic" disc, and the soundscapes are equally dense and compelling. Here, the pieces take on an expansive, majestic quality reminiscent of such electronica pioneers as Tangerine Dream and Walter Carlos, anchored all the while by ferocious beats and driving, churning bass loops. In all, this is a highly impressive collection that not only compels with its music, but blurs the boundary between "organic" and "synthetic," making the listener question the very meanings of those words.

Previous to this album i've heard several other suv tracks that where hotter than that desert(u see on the cover) aswell as 1 fat azz mix he has(called suvs world mix or sumthin' like that...d/l it newayz it's hot)I guess as opposed to what i heard on this album i was really expecting ALOT more from El Señor Suv but he still has a tight album with pretty tight songs just not any mind blowing sht.But Suv duz his Job and represents nicely Most songs are spanish influenced which got me to cop this album so if you like a little spice n salsa with your dnb then get this album it's good but don't expect 2 much you might be dissapointed.

First off, I know this is an expensive album. One, b/c it is an import; and secondly, b/c it is a 2 CD album (the 2nd disc being a mix/remix of disc 1.)But it a great investment from the members of Ram Records (founded by Andy C and Ant Miles). It includes tracks by: Andy C, Shimon, Red One, Moving Fusion, and Ant Miles (formerly known as Origin Unknown.)You might have heard some of these tracks on other albums (like on the Ram Trilogy album), but it is definately worth it for disc 2 alone.A dynamically sounding album.

Lost Metalheadz members masterpiece
As Boymerang is been out of the scene since the release of this album, and his final remix, that being the Goldie & KRS-One track "Digital", anyone who is trying to increase their exposure need look no further.

As one of the earlier members of the greatest D&B label on the planet (Metalheadz), Boymerang's creativity, soundscaping, and drum composition are a great ode to the nearly extinct "classic intelligent jungle"...not to be confused with "classic intelligent drum n' bass" or "classic ragga"...

This CD is a memento of where the music was before Drum N' Bass had the definitions it does today...when the producers had to reach a pinnacle of the jungle sound in order to break into something other than ragga, two-step, and broken beats.

Amongst the finest "Intelligent Drum 'N' Bass albums ever...
As a Hip-Hop / Drum & Bass musician & Producer that has worked with some of Dance music's most revered artists (Goldie, Redman, LL Cool J), he burst onto the album scene with this his 1997 debut "Colours". Forget hard edged Drum & Bass...this album has its hand in the smooth Jazz-tinged 'LTJ Bukem' intelligent Drum & Bass end of this...."Metropolis" opens the album very strongly, with late night ambient Jazz layered over the D & B breaks. "Music in my mind" is a smooth synth-sampling breakbeat excursion of sublime structure. But it not until "The Tree knows everything" that the introduction of a accomplished vocalist is introduced (courtesy of "Everything But the Girls - Tracey Thorn") that the true melodic spirit of the album truly unleashes on the listener. And the inclusion of the astonishing atmospheric "Circles", easily matches anything produced by similar artists, and matches 'LTJ Bukem' seminal "Logical progression" for innovation, scope, production, atmosphere & downright influential tracks.

J-Majik can actually be found!
This cd is pricey but well worth it. J-Majik provides two cds, the 2nd cd is a mix including some of the songs in the first one. His production is unique and energizing for the soul: fast and not TOO rough like every other freakin' cd out. This is probably my best Drum and Bass cd out of a collection of about 20. MUST BUY! :::::::also look for Dillinja's CYBOTRON !

"Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is a song written mainly by John Lennon (credited to Lennon/McCartney) and recorded by The Beatles for their 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Julian's drawing According to the Beatles, one day in 1966 Lennon's son, Julian, came home from nursery school with a drawing he said was of his classmate, a girl named Lucy. Showing the artwork to his father, young Julian described the picture as "Lucy — in the sky with diamonds." Julian later said, "I don't know why I called it that or why it stood out from all my other drawings, but I obviously had an affection for Lucy at that age. I used to show dad everything I'd built or painted at school, and this one sparked off the idea for a song about 'Lucy in the sky with diamonds'." His son's artwork appears to have inspired Lennon to draw heavily on his own childhood affection for Lewis Carroll's "Wool and Water" chapter from Through the Looking-Glass. At least one lyric was influenced by both Carroll and skits on a popular British radio comedy programme (The Goon Show) making references to "plasticine ties", which showed up in the song as "Plasticine porters with looking glass ties". A parody of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star", recited by the Mad Hatter, appears in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Carroll's work has also been cited as having influenced Lennon's "I Am the Walrus" which refers to a character from Through the Looking-Glass and his two books, In His Own Write and A Spaniard in the Works. Who was Lucy? The Lucy referred to in the song was probably a classmate of Julian's at Heath House School named Lucy O'Donnell, born in Weybridge in 1963.[2] She has met up with him on a few occasions in the last few years, and occasionally appears on daytime shows for the anniversary of the "Sgt. Pepper's" album. She is featured in the book "A Hard Days Write". She now lives in Surbiton in Surrey, and owned a nanny agency for children with special needs until she was taken ill with psoriatic arthritis and lupus some years ago. Reference to drugs and the title of the song While Lennon and the Beatles were often frank about their drug use, for decades they denied that "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" had anything to do with LSD. In a 2004 interview, however, Paul McCartney spoke openly about his Beatles-era drug use, revealing that songs such as "Day Tripper" and "Got To Get You Into My Life" were written directly about LSD and marijuana. When questioned about "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," he noted that Julian's painting had inspired the song, but that it was "pretty obvious" that the song was about an acid trip.[3] In a 1971 interview, Lennon recalled hearing about how the initials of the title spelled out "LSD", then checking if the same thing had happened with other Beatles songs and finding "they didn't spell out anything." In that same interview, he stated the song was composed in a conscious attempt to craft poetry, and in 1980 he confirmed the images were taken from Alice in Wonderland. In The Beatles Anthology (2000), Ringo Starr claimed he was present when Julian showed his "crazy little painting". McCartney recounted the time he and Lennon spent in Lennon's music room, swapping suggestions for lyrics, saying, "We never noticed the LSD initial until it was pointed out later, by which point people didn't believe us."[4] Although the Beatles say they did not name the song after LSD, the song was conceived and recorded during a time when the Beatles were experimenting with LSD frequently.
