Since we were born with hair ranging from medium brown to deepest brown and in some cases black, we tend to add color more regularly than other races. The huge spectrum of hair color options available can easily leave you overwhelmed. Where do you start? What’s the best complimentary color for your complexion? Can you color at home yourself? These are a few perplexing questions that sometimes plague and hinder you from achieving the beautiful bold color that you desire. I will explain different types of coloring as well as best suggested shade to compliment any shade of brown to pale complexions. Looking your best has never been so easy!

What’s Your Shade?
Dark Complexions
My chocolate sisters can quite easily look fabulous wearing jet-black hair, as they are among the only shade that effortlessly and easily are able to pull it off. Not saying that women with lighter shades can’t but rule of thumb is that the lighter your skin, the lighter your hair color should be. When you really think about it, jet-black hair on pale skin only makes the complexion look that much more pale and pasty. With black as the base color, women with dark complexions can add any highlight they choose and still look fabulous. Highlights of red to wine, auburn to blond and everything in between compliment these beautiful women of dark complexions rather nicely.

Medium Complexions
For the women in-between, base colors of #1 through #4 compliments them best. While medium complexions have a little more leeway, spice highlights reign supreme and no one can work spice quite like this chic! Highlights of #33 and #30 look amazing on this skin tone. However, making the mistake of coloring your hair too close to your complexion can be a terrible thing and almost give you a rather dingy appearance. Contrasting your hair color with your skin tone can tremendously improve your complexion. It’s really almost as crazy looking as lip color being the same as the color of your face when you think about it. I happen to fall closer to this category and over the years I have had quite a few hits and misses. I have tried auburn and it didn’t quite sit well with me nor anyone else who had to look at me. I have experimented with jet-black, which was OK, but I didn’t want dark hair, I wanted highlights, lowlights, and all that good stuff in between. The colors that I found looked best on my complexion was base #4, highlights of #27 and lowlights of #30. Over the summer when I consume more sun than normal, my complexion tends to fluctuate so I usually would go darker for the summer to accommodate my ever-changing complexion.

Light Complexions
While women with lighter complexions have a few more options as far as base colors go, it is not recommended that #1 or jet black color be used. Why not? Why? When choosing hair color the first thing you must consider is how the color will look against your complexion. Think about it contrasting against your skin. Let’s be real here, jet black hair on pale skin looks somewhat creepy and witchy. It only makes you look even paler than you really are. Yikes! You have much more color options than other complexions why not go with a honey brown base with highlights of #27 and #30.

Easy Steps To Hair Bleaching
For most of us born with dark hair, first applying a bleach to lighten the hair before applying color is necessary in order to achieve the highlights we desire. You really don’t need to pay someone to do this. In fact it’s easy and just about anyone can do it himself or herself.
Before you begin, make certain you have the following items ready in a well-ventilated area:

• Plastic Mixing Bowl
• Wooden or Plastic Spatula
• Hair Bleaching Powder
• Crème Developer
• Plastic Gloves
• Foil Strips or Hair streaking Cap/Hook
• Flat Application Brush
• Plastic duck-billed clips (optional)

Step 1
Empty the contents of bleaching powder into plastic bowl. Add crème developer a little at a time as you stir until the mixture is the consistency of blue cheese dressing. Leave mixture to sit until you have completed step 2.

Step 2
If you are using foil strips make certain that you secure the strips of hair to the foil using the plastic duck-billed clips. This would ensure the strips of hair to be bleached stay in place for faster application as is vital to even coloring. If you are using a plastic streaking cap, brush your hair backwards then apply the cap. Using the tiny hook included, begin piercing the cap and pulling out small portions of hair through the hole, you pierced in the cap. Repeat this is often, as you desire. The more hair you pull the greater the mass of colored hair you will end up with. After you are satisfied with the amount of hair you want to be bleached, take a fine toothed comb and start combing the free portions of hair you pulled from the cap to make certain the hair is not tangled at the root so that bleaching will be more uniformed.

Step 3
Using your spatula, give the mixture a final whip before applying. Take your application brush and start applying quickly. Remember, virgin hair begins to lighten within seconds of application. For even faster applications, use your hands to apply the bleach. Never put your bare hands in bleach, always use gloves. If you find your mixture’s consistency getting thicker, then add a little more crème developer and mix until it gets thinner.

Step 4
Keep a careful and close eye on the developing color and always remember that wet hair color is always darker than dry hair. If you want subtle highlights then you should process color for a shorter period. For bright vibrant color, leave the bleach on longer, provided your hair is healthy enough to endure this harsh processing.

Foil Instructions
If at glance you feel that the color is what you desired then, wash out a small porting of the bleached hair and dry it. If it’s still too dark then repeat the process from step one. After you have achieved the desired color, remove foil and thoroughly wash all bleaching residue from your hair, deep condition, and style as usual.

Streaking Cap Instructions
Streaking caps are neater and easier to use for an individual applying the bleach themselves. To check the boldness of the bleach, rinse a small portion and dry it. If the color is undesirable, then begin with step 1 and reapply. Afterwards, give your hair a quick rinse to remove the built up bleach for smoother and stress free removal of cap. Remove cap, shampoo and deep treat, then style as usual.

Applying Color
Now that you have the desired brightness of the bleach, it’s time to apply some color. After washing out the bleach thoroughly, apply rinse over the entire head, using a wide toothed comb to blend the color into all of the strands evenly. After color has been applied from root to tip, cover with plastic cap and apply heat as directed on the packaging instructions. Rinse thoroughly and condition, style as usual.
Now you have a beautiful head of bold highlights and stunning lowlights! Enjoy!

With such easy steps, its easy to create a work of art that frames the beauty of your face. Before we begin, lets go over the basics. When drawing your eyebrows, you first need to know where to start, where to end and most importantly, where to place your arch.

Step 1

To find out where to start from the inner corner, take your pencil or brush and place it against the outer corner of your nose vertically, making certain that the inner corner of your eyes straight up to brow line is included. Place a small dot on your brow to mark your starting point.

Next, again take your pencil or brush and line it up from the outer edge of your nose to the outer corner of your eye. Following this line, make a small dot on the outer corner of your brow. This is where your eyebrow should stop.

Then finally, looking straight ahead, take your brush or pencil and hold it from the outer corner of your nose and over your pupil. This is where the highest point of your eyebrow will be, your arch.

As you practice and get better you won't have to do this anymore. Thank goodness! You'll soon become an expert with flawless eyebrows. This YouTube video walks you through the remaining steps easily.

Lace Wigs: How NOT to look "Wiggy"

If you're like me then you already realize that because you're wearing a wig doesn't mean that you should like like you are. There is absolutely nothing worse that wearing a wig that basically looks like a hairy helmet! To avoid this fashion faux pas, I follow these guidelines. It doesn't always provide 100% coverage against purchasing a hideous wig, but at least it would be wearable.

If you are making an online purchase where you aren't physically able to try on a wig then the next best thing to do is take it to YouTube. Just type in the make and model of the wig you are interested in buying and you should get a good amount of videos that feature the wig and its pros and cons. Also, there are a lot of fashion and beauty blogs such as this one that are more than willing to help you choose the prefect one. Sometimes just by looking at the wig picture on its package, just doesn't justify the look of the wig. That's where the videos help. "Is that your hair"?
My rule of thumb when purchasing wigs is that if it doesn't look like it can grow out of my scalp then its not going home with me! I wear my hair naturally and my specific preference is kinky or curly wigs. While I do like the straight ones as well, I won't purchase hair that looks like vinyl. That's a definite NO-NO! Choose a wig that is closest to your hair texture, whether relaxed or natural, it doesn't matter. If you catch other women staring at your hair with a puzzled look on their face then, Congratulations! You've found the perfect match! No one should easily be able to conclude that you are wearing a wig. Keep 'em guessing girls!

Synthetic or Human?
When the notion of wearing wigs outside of Hollywood first came about, human hair wigs reigned supreme; so did their price tags. I always own about eight to ten wigs at any given time, not because I don't like combing my own hair but because I love the options and flexibility they offer. In the time that I purchased my first lace wig to now, I have owned only three human hair wigs. These days, synthetic fibers have come a very long way in the natural look and feel that women desire. There are some synthetic wigs that can truly be passed off as human and the best part being that they are only a fraction of the cost of their human counterparts.They even have synthetic wigs that can be flat ironed and curled. Now if that isn't revolutionary, then I don't know what is.

Tweakin' It

What you see isn't necessarily what you get. When you purchase a wig, half the time you see a few things that can be improved. Some people even go one step further in taking the wig to their salon to have it styled. I don't particularly like wigs with full bangs because I just don't like all that hair on my face all the time. There are some wigs that have bangs that just don't lay flat and it just looks ridiculous! Like I said, it should lay flat like your natural hair. Then on the other hand you have some lace wigs that have a crazy thick hairline that makes you look like you're wearing a geisha wig! OMG! This is the worst thing that can happen where lace wigs are concerned. If you find yourself with a wig like this try taking a tweezer and thinning out the hairline to make it look more natural.When you think of it, NO ONE has a hairline like that on the planet! The whole idea of wearing a wig is for it to look like your natural hair.

The mere thought of trimming the ends of natural hair is a daunting task for many. It is a lot easier for relaxed women and women with naturally straight hair to trim because the hair lays flat. Kinky hair strands are several different lengths at any given time. So how do you get a clean trim to remove those annoying split ends? It is simpler than you think, and in a few simple steps, you can rid your hair of damaged ends and be on your way to having the best black hair ever!

Depending on the desired precision, twist your entire head into a series of small to medium sized two-strand twists. When you do this, be sure to twist the ends all the way down to ensure a cleaner cut.

In this article, I will show the fast and easy way to DIY bonded wraps with invisible parts. The first step in adding extensions is making sure your natural hair is secured and not left open to damage. There are a few ways you can ensure your hair is protected for the duration of your weave or bond. One way you can secure your hair is to part you hair where you want the invisible part to be applied and braid flat corn rows from front to back, sewing the ends back up in the direction of your forehead, and then placing a stalking cap over it. For the flattest and smoothest finished look I would suggest that you part your hair first then gel your hair back into a mid pony tail and gel the hair from the pony tail upwards and smoothly ensuring it blends flat onto the top of your head. For this technique you would not need a stalking cap but it is imperative that you allow your hair to dry completely before preceding to the first step.

Materials Needed

• Scissors

• Straight Blade

• Hair Bonding Glue

• Hair Extensions (usually 1 pack)

• Stalking Cap (optional)

• Rat Tail Comb

• Spritz

Step 1

Begin by applying a little bonding glue to the stalking cap (if you are using one) to secure the cap from slipping once you start bonding your tracts. Do not glue the cap past your natural hair line at the nape. Measure the track by placing one end at the nape from side to side. Cut tract and apply bonding glue and spray glue with spritz for faster and more secure hold. Repeat this process working you way to the top of your head. Your tracts should run from hairline to hairline horizontally tail you get to the top. Depending on the depth of your part you should leave 6-8 inch tract and lay it aside for use in constructing your invisible part. Most hair extensions that were specifically made for wraps will include a closure. If the one you purchased does not have one, I will show you how to close in step 4 but you must again leave about a 12 inch tract to close in addition to the 6-8 inches for the invisible part.

Step 2

You should have approximately one inch between the visible skin on your scalp where you have made your part to the last horizontal track before starting the invisible part line. Take your scissors and cut the stalking cap right above your part and trim the excess off between the cut you just made and the tract. Next, take the 6-8 inch tract we reserved for the invisible part and split the tract down center where the thread is to make two thinner 6-8 inch tracts. Use your scissors to cut the tracts into 1 inch pieces and apply a very thin amount of bonding glue and spritz on them. The more glue you apply the messier the part will look defeating the purpose.

Step 3

As you can see there are two empty sides on either side of your part. Starting at the very front of your head at your hairline where you made your part, place a one inch tract at the very root of your part ensuring that you lay the tiny tracts going forward and not backward. It is very important that you continue laying tracts closely together in a straight line along your part. When placing the tracts use the tail end of the comb to press the tract into place. At first applying light pressure until it becomes tacky then pressing harder as it dries further. This helps prevent glue from gushing out from under tract and making a mess. Continue on both sides of the tract. Remember the narrower the part, the more natural it will appear.

Step 4

Now that you have your fabulous invisible part in place, its time for us to construct our closure. As I mentioned earlier, if your hair extensions came with a closure then you don't need to read about constructing one. Simply apply a thin bead of bonding glue in a circular motion to the closure, spritz and allow glue time to become tacky before applying. Again, very wet glue can run and gush, thus ruining your wrap. When glue is tacky place at the very center of area that needs closure and press firmly.

If you have to construct a closure first take the 12 inch tract we reserved from step one and split it into two 12 inch tracts like we did the tract we applied to our part. You should have somewhat of a circle or oval shape that needs to be closed on the crown of your head. Take one of the 12 inch tracts you split into two and apply a thin bead of bonding clue and spritz and allow glue to tack. Working your way from the outside of the circle to the inside, paste tract in a circular motion. After doing this you should notice that you have a tiny hole left to close. Take the final portion of the 12 inch tract and apply an even thinner bead of glue to the length of the tract, spritz and allow to tack. Starting with one end of the tract, roll the tract tightly into a small roll. Finally place a pea sized dab of bonding glue at the base of the small rolled tract and securely place the tract inside the tiny hole at the crown of your head. Remember after placing the rolled tract in the tiny opening, take your finger and push down on the center of the roll before glue dries completely. This will cause the roll to expand the width of the hole and to lay flat on top.
