Opening a Roth IRA Account At Your Bank

It may be that you can open a Roth IRA at your bank. But should you? Most banks do offer Roth IRA investment services but it may very well not be among the best Roth IRAs that you can choose. Why not?

Banks are usually not the place to open a Roth IRA account because your investment options are severely limited.

Usually, you only get to choose from CDs, money market funds, and some variety of cash equivalent. Another downside of using your bank as your Roth IRA provider is that banks often charger higher fees on transactions than a mutual fund or brokerage house.

With that said, many banks have recently expanded and are vying to become full service financial providers. If you have a lot of trust and confidence in your bank (which is tough with all the bank activities of late), then you may want to set up a meeting with your bank counselor to find out if their Roth package is right for you.

Opening Your Roth IRA With a Mutual Fund Company

I am a big fan of opening your Roth IRA with a mutual fund company. To me, mutual funds offer the best Roth IRAs because you have the availability that you need without a whole lot of risk. (I find it ironic that it is so easy to open a Roth IRA account with so little paperwork given the huge importance of retirement money.) After we open a Roth IRA account, we will then be looking for Roth IRA best rates within that account.

Mutual Fund companies come in many varieties so be mindful to choose the right ones.

When choosing a mutual fund for your Roth IRA, be especially mindful of two things: commissions/account fees and variety of funds available.

Avoid–like the plague–any mutual funds with large commissions and fees. Many of these mutual funds make their money on the fees that they charge you. Thus, they will take a percentage of your profits and outfit themselves with new homes with your retirement money. Don’t allow this to happen to you.

Some mutual fund companies that have earned loyalty for their honesty and investment availability options are Vanguard (my personal favorite), Fidelity, and Charles Schwab.

Opening Your Roth IRA with A Brokerage House

Your final option in choosing the best Roth IRAs is a brokerage house.

When we inquire as to the Roth IRA best rates, you will have the best opportunity to earn money in your Roth IRA if you go with a discount brokerage house. However, I do not recommend this.

Why?

If you have your retirement money in a brokerage house, you will have the availability to trade stocks frequently at practically no charge.

While this may seem like a benefit, for your retirement fund, it is not safe and offers a temptation that you do not need.

When the market plummeted in 2008/2009, I saw many people lose their entire retirement savings. This happened because they were “playing the market” with their retirement money and this is never a good idea. Mutual funds, which diversify your financial assets in a number of investments, were not as affected as many individual stocks, which essentially lost all of their value.

Though you can get some of the Roth IRA best rates if you are a savvy investor, it is probably not the safest choice for the majority.

Roth IRA Best Rates: Summary

As we stated in the beginning, a Roth IRA is an investment vehicle and not an investment itself. You first need to find which would be among the best Roth IRAs for you: your bank, a mutual fund, or a brokerage service.

I do not recommend your bank because this is not usually their specialty. Also, fees tend to be higher. I do recommend a Mutual Fund with low fees and commissions. This will allow your money to grow steadily without the risk of losing it all.

Finally, you may find that you can achieve the Roth IRA best rates with a brokerage account because you can trade stocks–and have potential huge gains–by investing in personal stocks. However, this is too risky for your retirement money. Do that with your “play money.”

My Conclusion: Open your Roth IRA account with a mutual fund company, set up steady automatic payments that equal the maximum Roth contribution (currently $5,000), and forget about it.

When retirement comes, you will be happy that you took this path!

In a home theater system review on January 22 entitled Excellent Sound and Picture, Great Deal, indianajones25 wrote, “I was watching the prices fluctuate so much on this and I almost bought it at a really low price a week ago or so. I noticed a “used” one in “very good” condition at Amazon Warehouse for about 60 dollars lower than that with free shipping so I took a chance and bought that one instead. I don’t know what was “used” about it, but it must’ve been either the plastic bags or outer carton because the system itself was brand spankin’ new! Couldn’t have been more surprised (or happier!). Don’t be afraid to buy from Amazon Warehouse! Some people may have had bad experiences with them, but not me. Now, on to the unit. I got all the speaker wires hooked up and everything connected. I did not use the supplied microphone and the set-up mode associated with it because I couldn’t figure out where to plug the damn thing in! It’s probably in the manual somewhere but it was late and I didn’t feel like looking for it. So once everything was hooked up, I just used the set up within the menu to adjust the various speaker volumes etc. Worked out fine. The speaker wire label stickers are helpful for some I guess, but I didn’t use them since everything’s color coded and the rear surrounds are about 8 feet (don’t quote me on the exact length) longer than the surrounds. I put my first blu-ray in and watched a little of The Prestige. Hey, it’s the only I have right now! Chose the THX mode on my P50G10 and all was good! Awesome all around.

PROS:

Easy set-up, excellent sound and picture. The surrounds and center speakers have a nice quality weight to them, not some light, cheap speaker feel as some may expect from a HTIB. The fronts are very light, but still sound great. Blu Ray loads very fast (under 20 seconds), unlike what I heard from other reviews. I must’ve gotten one with updated firmware or something because it loaded almost as fast as my regular dvd player.

INCONVIENCES:

Manual’s index didn’t cover half the features on this unit. For someone impatient like me, I suggest calling Panasonic’s tech support for direct answers. They were very helpful the couple times I called.

I tried putting in a concert dvd (non-blu ray) and it said “disc is not compatible” or something like that so I still may need to update the firmware or change a setting on the unit. If anyone has experienced this, please let me know the workaround, if any. Oh, and if there’s any speaker brackets out there that fit the surrounds, I would like to know that as well. My only complaint is a minor one. I don’t understand why Panasonic uses this cheap speaker wire with the Panasonic connectors. It limits the people who want to spend the money on high grade speaker wire (or at least they have to splice them together).

All in all, this is one of the best electronic purchases I have ever made.

Chrome is Google’s new Internet Browser. Because it just came out, it has a relatively small market share. Chrome is already rated #2 of the best web browsers. The Opera Browser has also been making some slight headway but faces stiff competition from Firefox and Google. It also uses very few system resources and is great on older computers.

Technically and functionally, Mozilla Firefox is the best Internet browser. However, it is not the most implemented because Microsoft still controls the market by bundling IE with their Windows products.

The only “drawback” that I would agree with is that it is slow brewing, but slower means better coffee!! So unless you are one of those people that prefers things like easy microwaveable mac-n-cheese that saves you a whole 2 minutes…oooooh…. this is the same principle…i can wait an extra minute for coffee. You could always just set the timer to brew a couple minutes earlier in the morning.

–BTW it looks great on the counter

The drawback that one person pointed out is that this could cost you more in energy. You do have the option (you didn’t have this with “older” Bunn models) of switching on and off for when you are going to be away…I switch off for the weekend if I’m going to be away and then fire back up on Sunday PM. The way I look at it is that using the energy saver means that you are going to have to wait 15 minutes for coffee. You will have that with ANY coffeemaker WITHOUT a reservoir, so don’t see that as a drawback. But if you are like me and rushed in the morning, having the reservoir means having great coffee when you wake up without having to set the timer.

I’m glad I switched back to a Bunn. Great quality machine, and convenience makes up for any drawback you could try to point out.

Nowadays, cheap, junky, plastic drippers that produce tasteless, lukewarm coffee are the norm. Worse, they’re made so cheaply that they rarely last a year. This is the real deal, and is worth every penny for those who want REAL coffee that actually has some flavor, and it is built to last a lifetime.

This pot isn’t overly heavy, but is very solidly constructed. Everything up top is made of stainless steel, not cheap, junk plastic or aluminum. The heating element and base are attached with screws, not glue or rivets, and is seviceable. The lid fits solidly, and although the perk-knob isn’t made of glass, the large knob on top makes it very easy to remove a HOT lid after perking. Glass is attractive but breaks easily if dropped and is too hot to handle, so I’d argue this is an improvement over classic design. The cord is perfectly short and heavy-duty, and the fit and finish is excellent. Everything inside is polished stainless steel and there’s nothing to corrode or rust. It perks quickly and makes a wonderful whooshing/bubbling sound, and in about 10 minutes, you get a pot of heavenly-tasting joe that will bring a serious smile to your face. It’s amazing how perks can make even the cheapest beans taste wonderful! The old ways are always the best, and owning a really nice stainless steel percolator is really the only way to go.

The internal construction is interesting. The basket is firmly held to the lid by a spring. This helps keep the basket lid from floating off if the grinds are too powdery or drip holes are plugged, keeping grounds out of the coffee. The lid fits solidly as well. As long as the basket is kept clean and the drip holes are not plugged from neglect, it will perk nicely and your coffee will taste great. The tube-spring assembly design is very clever and addresses the problem of grinds in the coffee very well. The coffee you get from this pot is HOT, and is kept that way, and there is no annoying 2-hour timer that shuts the pot off just when you want another cup. Hot, fresh coffee from this pot is available anytime, all day, without having to hit the sodding brew button every couple of hours.

Some notes for those considering a purchase: be sure you grind your beans properly. Overgrinding will produce a good, strong cup of joe, but will make coffee bitterly acrid and will quickly plug the drip holes in the basket. Don’t use a paper filter –it absorbs essential oils and ultra-fine sediment that makes for great coffee, and will often cause the basket to overflow, forcing grounds into the pot. You CAN easily get a great pot of awesome-tasting coffee without using paper filters if you grind the beans properly. The strainer basket and tube are dishwasher-safe and cleaning the interior with a scotchbrite pad and mild soapy water is easily done.

Technique is everything. Be sure to remove the basket and tube immediately after perking for best flavor. This prevents re-perking and steam-drip which quickly ruins flavor. Be careful though - it is HOT, and it’s best to let the basket sit in the sink for a bit before dumping and cleaning.

I have only discovered one annoyance on this wonderful perk –that stupid aluminum sticker that is placed around the “ready” light. Peeling this crap off makes for a much nicer-looking product. In fact, this pot is so attractive and elegant, it would look right at home in the finest hotel. Do yourself a favor: dump that cheap, plastic drip-thing and step up to this wonderful percolator. On January 21, this reviewer said: “After 7 years, I broke the carafe for my Braun coffee maker and the replacement was about $20, so for $15 more I decided to get the Black & Decker DCM2500B instead. A basic coffeemaker is all we needed, and this one works just fine for us. The best thing about this coffeemaker is the carafe because it does not drip/leak when you pour the coffee (which was my biggest complaint with the old Braun). The worst thing about it for me is the large “lid” on the top of the machine. I have to pull it almost completely out from under the cabinet in order to open the lid and pour in the water. (However, I already expected that because of another review I read before buying.) I also don’t care for the bright red clock; I’d prefer blue/green or one that doesn’t light up at all. These little complaints are not a big deal to me though.
