Basic Attention Token (BAT) is the new token for the digital advertising industry created by founder of Javascript. It pays publishers for their content and users for their attention while providing advertisers with more in return for their ads.

Basic Attention Token shares 70% of their ad revenues with their users. Simply download Brave browser, enable “Brave Ads” within the browser and get notified about ads to earn free BAT while surfing the web. You can also earn BAT by claiming random token. New token grants typically become available on a monthly basis. Users may claim token grants once every 30 days on a first-come-first-served basis. You can do so by downloading Brave and enabling “Brave Rewards” to be eligible for possible token grants. A notification will appear on the Rewards icon when a grant is available. Also, earn up to BAT for each referral. Basic Attention Token is already listed on Coinmarketcap.

HOW IT WORKS

Brave Rewards is built on the Basic Attention Token (BAT), a new way to value attention, connecting users, content creators, and advertisers.

When you join Brave Rewards, your browser will automatically start tallying (only on your device’s local storage) the attention you spend on sites you visit. Once a month, Brave Rewards will send the corresponding amount of BAT, divided up based on your attention, from your local browser-based wallet to the sites you’ve visited. You can remove sites you don’t want to support, and tip creators directly too.

All of this is anonymous: nobody (not even us here at Brave) can see who supported which sites. We can only count up the total support for each site and send the BAT their way. Content creators can use our partner Uphold to convert the BAT they earn into a currency of their choosing.

Where to get tokens

You can fund your wallet with a currency of your choice or earn tokens by viewing ads you’re in control of.

Brave Rewards goes beyond anonymously supporting your favorite content creators. Brave Ads are enabled by default in Brave Rewards, providing the ability to earn Basic Attention Tokens (BAT) every time you view an ad. Brave Ads are presented separately from your web content at a convenient time, and keep your personal details completely private and anonymous. They can show up in the form of system notifications or sponsored images on the new tab page.

You can control every aspect of Brave Ads — from the number of system notifications you’d like to see, to whether or not you want to hide sponsored images. You’ll earn 70% of the ad revenue that we receive from advertisers. In exchange for your attention, you’ll accumulate tokens as you browse. You can contribute these tokens to the sites you love — with more options coming later.

Guide: Earn free BAT while surfing the web:

Download and install Brave browser on your desktop device. Brave Ads will be integrated in Android and iOS apps in the coming months.

Start Brave browser and click on the BAT triangle logo next to the address bar.

A popup will occur where you enable rewards by clicking on “Join Rewards”.

Now navigate to your reward settings from the popup or by typing “brave://rewards/” and make sure “Brave Ads” toggle is turned on.

From now on you will be presented with offers in form of notifications at a time that the browser finds appropriate and not disruptive.

Simply engage with these notifications, view the ads and you will earn 70% revenue share from the viewed ad, while Brave only receives the remaining 30%.

At the close of the Brave Rewards monthly cycle, you can claim your accumulated tokens. The BAT can be automatically donated on a monthly basis to your most visited sites, or used to tip favorite content creators or friends. Soon, you will also be able to use BAT for premium content, as well as redeem it for real-world rewards such as hotel stays, restaurant vouchers, and gift cards. Brave is also working on an option to let users withdraw BAT from their wallets for personal use, converting their BAT to a local fiat currency through exchange partners.

Please note that Brave Ads are geo-restricted to the following countries: US, UK, Canada, Germany and France. More geographies will be available soon.

HTC has long championed metal phones with harsh lines and chamfered edges, but the Ultra U is about as far from that as possible. The HTC U Ultra comes with a 5.7-inch display protected by a curved Gorilla Glass 5 screen, as well as an independently controlled two-inch “Dual Display” screen along the top.

Like an increasing number of smartphones, it is a dual-nano SIM device, with the second slot able to accommodate a micro-SD card to bump storage up to 2TB.

The hardware specifications look like what you would expect from a top-tier flagship device today: 4GB RAM, Bluetooth 4, NFC, USB 3.1 Type-C port, GPS and GLONASS for location, and even support for China’s BeiDou satellite navigation system. The HTC U Ultra feels noticeably lighter than other 5.5-inch to 5.7-inch devices in its class.

Key Features

Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 821

Display: 5.7 inches (2560 x 1440 pixels) with 2-inch dual display (160 x 1040 pixels)

Dimensions: 162.4mm x 79.7mm x 7.9mm

Weight: 170 grams

Memory: 4GB RAM, 64GB ROM, expandable micro-SD slot

Battery: 3,000 mAH, Quick Charge 3.0

OS : Android 7.0

Cameras: 12 megapixel with f/1.8 aperture, with a 16 megapixel front-facing camera

Software

The U Ultra runs Sense HTC’s chronicle of Android Nougat 7.0. Each manufacturer’s essence of Android is a matter of personal choice though we can’t get on house with HTC’s.

It’s finished swell in new years by putting things like Google Photos in place of a possess app, though there’s still too most on here.

The second screen leads into the other standout feature of the HTC U Ultra: the software is all built around ‘AI’. Artificial intelligence is a phrase bandied around a lot these days and it can be affixed to anything from a speaker to a toothbrush. Apple uses it for Siri, Google with its Assistant and, perhaps the strongest use so far, Amazon with Alexa. HTC isn’t using any of these, but instead is intertwining smart elements throughout the software.

The HTC U Ultra will supposedly only show you notifications that actually matter and learn your schedule to set relevant alarms when you’re travelling.

If it senses you’ve got a busy day and you’re likely to run out of battery before it’s up, it will shut off non-essential functions to make sure you make it through. There are a lot of little things going on here, and it has the potential to be the first actually useful phone assistant if it all works correctly. If the right data isn’t there, though, then I imagine it being yet another gimmick that’s forgotten very quickly.

The phone I was using during my demo was running older software – hence the HTC 10 style of homescreen – but it’ll look different when it ships later in the month. I was told the icons will be different, but HTC wouldn’t confirm what other changes it’ll be making.

Overall, a tough to clear a £649 cost indicate with foe such as a Google Pixel or Samsung Galaxy S7 in a Android market, generally with Samsung’s subsequent large thing around a corner.

Other points

Battery life is subsequent what I’d design of a phone this size, generally true out of a box, nonetheless it will get we by a day.

Generally, a phone is zippy and responsive, and a haptic feedback is reassuring.

As common with HTC, sound by a speakers is good above average

Memory during 64GB should be adequate for roughly anyone. A 128GB chronicle also exists, though does not seem to be on sale in a UK during launch.

Pros: Good looking, fast, second shade can be useful
Cons: Falls on a building a lot, no headphone jack, Sense Companion not accessible during launch.

Huawei’s successful Honor series received a handful of additions to its repertoire last year including the Honor 6 and Honor 6 Plus. In the same month Huawei also launched the Honor 6 Plus, which features a nearly identical build and spec sheet as the Honor 6, just in a larger body.

Specs

The Huawei Honor 6 Plus doesn’t set the bar for any kind of bleeding edge specs, but it’s no slouch either. Performance wise the Honor 6 Plus contends with most high-end phones that came out in 2014, with only later entries like the Galaxy Note 4 and Nexus 6 pulling ahead. Powered by Huawei’s own Kirin 925 Octo-core processor, which is a slight bump up from the Kirin 920 in the Honor 6, as well as a new high-end standard 3GB and a larger 5.5-inch screen over the Honor 6, this phone is near the cream of the crop.

5.5-inch 1080p IPS LCD

HiSilicon Kirin 925 Octo-Core CPU (1.8GHz Cortex-A15 Quad-core, 1.3GHZ Cortex-A7 Quad-core)

Mali-T628 MP6 GPU

3 GB of RAM

16/32GB internal storage, microSD card support

3600 mAh Li-Po battery

Android 4.4.2, Emotion UI 3.0 Skin

Dual 8MP rear-facing cameras, Dual-LED flash

8MP front-facing camera

Dual-SIM support

150.5mm tall, 75.7mm wide, 7.5mm thin

165g

The Honor 6 Plus supports a wide range of spectrum that works throughout the world, but only up to 3G HSPA in most countries that aren’t China. If your country’s LTE bands are on the list and your carrier uses the technology, the Honor 6 Plus supports LTE Cat-6 Carrier Aggregation.

2G: GSM 900/1800/1900MHz

3G: HSPA 850/900/1900/2100MHz

4G: LTE 1800/2100/2600MHz (Band 1, 3, 7, 38, 39, 40, 41)

Display

The display on the Honor 6 was already one of the better 1080p LCD displays I’ve ever seen, but the one packed in the Honor 6 Plus is even better. Ghosting is almost non-existent and isn’t noticeable in anything I tried, which is a marked improvement over the other LCD’s out there I’ve seen with good black levels. The only issue here are the viewing angles, where light bleed from the sides of the device become obvious as you tilt the screen, but are completely unnoticeable when viewing straight on.

Hardware and Build

The build quality of the Honor 6 Plus feels largely the same as the Honor 6 before it, however this time around Huawei actually used metal for the sides of the device instead of the faux brushed-metal looking plastic. This results in a higher quality feeling device, especially when it’s cooler and you can feel the cold metal against the sides of your hands. The back is the same shiny plastic glass material and the same pattern underneath as the Honor 6 has, which gives it a bit of an elegant appearance. Huawei kept the unique 3-sided trim around the device where both sides and the top of the phone feature a metal trim, but the bottom is a smooth rounded plastic.

Looking at the right side of the device you’ll find both volume rocker closest to the top of the device, the power button just under that, and both SIM card trays below the power button. What’s really cool that Huawei did here was make two different sized SIM tray slots, so one fits a micro SIM and one fits a nano SIM. On the top side of the device you’ll find an RF blaster for remote control of TV’s and other RF-controlled devices, with a noise-canceling mic to the left and a 3.5mm headset jack to the right. The bottom side of the phone has a microUSB port nestled right in the middle of the device with another noise-cancelling mic to its left.

Moving onto the face of the device you’ll find no physical buttons at all, as the screen takes up the vast majority of the face. Above the screen you’ll find the earpiece with the proximity and light sensors above it, and the 8mp front-facing camera to the left of the earpiece. The back of the phone you’ll see the speaker on the bottom left, which features the same vertical dotted pattern as on the Honor 6. The top left of the device holds something special, as the dual-LED flash sits alongside a dual-8MP camera setup.

Performance and Memory

Just as you would expect from a high-end Android device the Huawei Honor 6 Plus breezes through apps without issue. Huawei’s EmotionUI is a sleek and powerful Android skin that’s got plenty of features and a low overhead, ensuring that your phone won’t choke on any performance-intensive task such as gaming, HD video or multitasking. Benchmarks like AnTuTu show it at the top of its game, competing with the likes of the Xiaomi Mi4, OnePlus One and Meizu MX4 Pro without using the same chipset. Gaming performance is phenomenal and handled everything I threw at it with ease. The 1080p display delivers sharp, crisp visuals and the framerate never let me down even in demanding moments on visually intensive games.

Multitasking was just as much a joy to use as the rest of the phone. Huawei uses a Recents button to make multitasking quick and easy, so bringing up the list of recently used and currently running apps is just a single software button press away. Instead of the standard virtually scrolling list of apps with thumbnails Huawei uses a paginated interface that shows 4 large thumbnails of open apps on the screen, arranged in each of the four corners of the device. Swiping left or right moves between pages, while swiping down locks and app in memory and swiping up closes the app. This is a fantastic layout that’s different from stock Android but doesn’t change things in a negative way as Xiaomi’s MIUI does with its awful small row of icons. Switching between apps was an instant affair, only taking any length of time because of the transition animations between windows. I never saw any redraw or other symptom of poor RAM management the way I’ve seen on some other Android skins. This means you won’t have to wait for the page to reload in the browser every time you reopen the app, as it stays in memory like it’s supposed to instead of being cleared out all the time.

Battery Life

Battery life was nothing short of spectacular in my testing. With a 3,600mAh battery the Honor 6 Plus features a larger battery than the vast majority of phablets out there, and with a screen resolution of 1080p you’re absolutely guaranteed to get better battery life than with the available line of Quad-HD screen phones out there. There was nothing I could do in normal use to kill the battery on the phone, from streaming music all day, watching YouTube videos, keeping the brightness on max and using the phone for chatting on Hangouts all day. This thing just wouldn’t die, and that’s a great thing. I’d wager you could easily get a day and a half out of the battery in any normal scenario, and Huawei also provides an ultra power saving mode to keep your battery lasting for days and days. In this ultra power saving mode only calls, messages and access to contacts will be available, meaning Huawei’s integrated communications app is the only app able to be running. This makes your smartphone not so smart, but it ensures that you won’t be stranded in situations where you absolutely cannot have your phone’s battery die.

Software

EmotionUI 3.0 is a bold new step for Huawei, and one in the right direction in nearly every facet of the OS. It takes Android 4.4 KitKat’s appearance and turns it almost all white, with thin-lined teal icons gracing the notification bar and other areas of the OS. There’s definitely some iOS 7/8 influence here but it looks much more like Huawei’s own creation rather than just a clone or a good impression of what Apple is trying to do with its OS. The biggest defining software difference between the Honor 6 and Honor 6 Plus is the inclusion of screen-off gestures. Huawei now lets you double tap to wake the device as many phones since the LG G2’s debuted the feature. Within the options menu under gesture controls you’ll find the screen-off gestures setting, which enables you to launch any app by drawing the letter c, e, m or w on the screen even while the phone is locked and the screen is off. This is a level of convenience that’s easily overlooked but one that’s not easily let go once you start using it.

Sound

As can be expected from a single-back facing speaker, the sound output from the physical speaker on the Honor 6 Plus leaves a lot to be desired. Volume was lower than I would have liked in every application, from music to using the loudspeaker on the phone app. I found it impossible to use the loudspeaker when in a moving car, especially on the highway, where the volume was just too low to hear the person on the other end of the line. There’s no audible distortion from the speaker when the volume is all the way up but that’s not really saying anything given the overall low volume present from the speaker.

Audio output from the 3.5mm headset jack

Camera

One of the most unique features on the Huawei Honor 6 Plus is the camera, as the back of the phone has not one but two 8 megapixel cameras. This is a similar setup to what HTC did with the One M8 in the Spring of 2014, except instead of having one fairly low resolution Ultrapixel camera and a super low resolution Duo camera, Huawei features two full-quality 8MP shooters nestled right next to eachother. HTC branded its sensor the Ultrapixel camera because the physical pixels were 2 microns in size, which is nearly double the 1.1 micron pixel size of most sensors in smartphones nowadays. Huawei sort of follows this by creating a 1.98 micron “effective” pixel size, meaning both cameras are somewhere in the range of 1 micron pixels, but combining the image of both produces one that’s roughly the equivalent of the quality you would see out of a sensor with 1.98 micron pixels.

If all of this tech talk bores you, just remember this: the bigger the pixels the more light is allowed to enter the sensor, meaning low light photos will look better than on phones with smaller pixel sizes. Combining both images results in a 13 megapixel image in the end rather than an 8mp or a 16mp one. This gives you the best of both worlds, with an effective resolution higher than a single 8mp sensor but without the noise that a smaller 16mp sensor would bring. Overall I found the pictures taken with the Honor 6 Plus to be superior to most 13 megapixel shooters out there, with less noise, better color accuracy and almost no need to use those nasty denoise filters we’ve become so used to that make pictures muddy and unusable at large sizes.

Huawei also features a couple of interesting depth tricks that use the secondary camera to isolate objects and allow you to not only apply filters to the foreground or background of an image, but also to refocus after taking the picture. Using what’s called “Wide aperature” mode on the camera takes an 8mp shot with only a second or two of processing time in between. Because of this processing time wide aperature mode isn’t going to be good in every situation, especially one with lots of movement, but it gives you the freedom of more post-processing options than you would normally have with a picture taken from auto mode. After taking the shot you can select where the focus should be in the picture and adjust the virtual aperature of the lens, meaning the objects not immediately in focus will either become more or less blurred as you increase or decrease the aperature. You can also apply filters here such as making the subject in focus colorful while tinting the rest of the shot in black & white, or applying a pencil sketch filter to the unfocused part of the shot.

HDR photos are extremely quick to take, and while it obviously doesn’t use an instant on-sensor HDR method it does produce a full 13mp resolution image. There’s a bit more noise going on here than I would like to see in this mode, which unfortunately means the denoise filter goes into overdrive in lower light situations. This makes low light HDR very difficult to use as the images get muddy and details fade away. In strong lighting situations though the HDR produced some phenomenal results, taking near-instant shots with excellent color accuracy, great shadow balance and overall natural looking lighting without haloing or other common HDR imaging artifacts.

Low light shots are generally fantastic so long as you’re not in areas that are too dark. For these areas you need to switch from auto mode to Super Night mode, which uses both cameras to hold the shutter open longer and grab more light, then stitches the photos together in an attempt to make a less blurry photo. I found that letting it automatically choose these settings was usually a bad idea, as it held the shutter open a little too long and always resulted in a blurry photo. In this mode there are quick options for changing ISO and shutter speed right on screen, so dropping that shutter speed to something more manageable like 1/2 or 1 second fixed my problem and produced absolutely stellar low light photos. Just don’t move when taking these or try to capture anything moving as it’ll come out blurry. Check out the gallery below for a smattering of different shots.

Conclusion

Network support in the US remains a low point for the Honor 6 Plus, but unlike the Honor 6 I was at least able to get 3G HSPA connectivity out of the device. Beware if you’re planning on using this phone on T-Mobile’s network or one of its MVNO’s though, as it didn’t play well and I received not only a number of dropped calls but no MMS support whatsoever. If your carrier supports the bands here you’re going to get one of the finest wireless network experiences possible though, especially if LTE Category 6 Carrier Aggregation is supported in your region. At around sub $400 this high-end phablet is perfect competition against what’s already in the market, but I’m not entirely sure about what’s to come. The Spring 2015 lineup of phones is looking to be more killer than ever, and if the pricing is right on these new phones Huawei’s latest might not look quite as good as it does right at this moment.

After Google’s launch event today in San Francisco, I had an opportunity to get my hands on its new Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL phones. My initial impression is that they are decent-looking, well-made phones. Google took a more active role in creating these phones than previous Nexus devices, taking the lead not just in hardware selection, but design as well. Using quality displays and not having a camera bump on the back were decisions driven by Google.

I say that both as a complaint and a compliment. Both phones are extremely well made, with the aluminum back, glass rear window, and glass front forming a shell that really feels like it’s worth the price tag. The design is also extremely derivative, to the point that I almost picked up someone’s iPhone on a display table thinking it was a Pixel.

The iPhone and Pixel share similar bezel sizes, but the iPhone has the excuse of having a hardware home button. Nothing takes up this vast amount of space on the front of the Pixel. The only unique part of the design is the glass window on the rear, which both allows RF signals to escape and serves as the camera lens.

You will find a minor change to the iPhone design on the sides, which starts as a rounded edge on the Pixel but is interrupted by a bezel around the perimeter of the back. This is an HTC-made device by the way, which Google will freely admit if you ask.

At least with the higher price tag comes a set of top-tier specs. The highlight is probably the storage solution, which uses UFS 2.0. We didn’t have a chance to run a storage benchmark, but hopefully they’ll be somewhere near the speed of high-end Samsung phones. The days of Google phones having slow storage should be over.

The Pixel phones will be one of the first devices to run the Snapdragon 821 SoC, which has a top speed of 2.4Ghz but Google chose to clock the chip back down to 2.15GHz. This makes it just a minor revision to the 820.

The best reason to buy a Pixel might actually be the software. Google is keeping the Google Assistant exclusive to the Pixel phones, at least for now. Long pressing on the home button activates the Assistant, which will pop up and answer questions. On a phone it looks a lot like it does on Google Allo, showing a chat-style interface that contains your questions along with the results.

There are smart reply responses that allow you to drill down on the result, too. For instance, saying “show me restaurants nearby” will show a carousel with results, and then “Italian,” “Chinese” and other restaurant types will be shown as smart reply options.

This is also the first device to launch with Android 7.1. The new build of Android (still called Nougat) is mostly a collection of minor APIs that enable Pixel features. There are things like a “Shortcut launcher API” which can somewhat replicate Apple’s 3D Touch on the home screen, but as far as we know this doesn’t work yet. There’s also “Night Light” mode (which turns the UI brown), circular icon support, and support for fingerprint scanner gestures. Some improvements to existing Android 7.0 features are included, like Seamless Updates and Daydream VR.

There are tons of aesthetic changes on top of this, like solid white System UI buttons, circular home screen icons, and a redesigned settings app. Inside the settings app is a “support” tab that offers a 24/7 link to Google support. A new “screen share” option even allows support to see your device.

We’ll need a lot more time to test out the camera properly, but Google promises this will be one of the best cameras on the market. The camera app did start-up very fast, but we’ll have to see how consistent that is after more usage.

At first blush, the hardware is fine. It’s just so much like an iPhone that it doesn’t even seem “new.” It lacks excitement and identity. The software looks interesting though, and I look forward to digging in for a full review. But no matter what, Google’s update speed automatically makes this one of the best Android devices currently available.

With prices starting at $649 for the 32GB, 5-inch version, Google is positioning its Pixel phones to compete with Apple’s and Samsung’s flagships. This will no doubt disappoint Nexus fans who were hoping for a more affordable option. It’s also a questionable strategy, considering the lack of brand awareness around Nexus/Pixel among the general public and Google’s lack of retail exposure. Its alignment with Verizon should help, but I imagine it will be difficult to convince someone looking to buy an iPhone or Galaxy phone to buy a Pixel instead, especially when its premiere feature, the one advantage it has over every other Android phone, is timely software and security updates—not exactly a sexy selling point. For those who do value up-to-date software, and who do not want to tinker with custom ROMs, the new Pixel phones are the new price of admission.

Samsung’s first try at this kind of “smart” band, which shipped in 2014, launched with flaws; only worked with Samsung’s Galaxy phones; and initially only tracked a few activities — and it cost $200. In contrast, the new $170 Samsung Gear Fit2 wristband works with all phones running newer versions of Android, has built-in GPS, and tracks a boatload of fitness activities — so many that I couldn’t try them all even though I’ve been wearing it for three weeks. This is not your basic step counter.

Right now, though, there’s still a tradeoff with these things: you either go with something lightweight and simple, with a long-lasting battery, or you go for a bright, colorful display and sacrifice battery life. The Gear Fit 2 is the latter. But does the platonic form of the activity-tracking wearable even exist yet? I’d say no. And so in the world we’re currently in, where there is no fitness tracker that does it all, this is one of the best possible tradeoffs.

Samsung Gear Fit2

Samsung Gear Fit2 Product Information

Since the first thing you’ll notice will be its display, let’s cover that first. The Gear Fit 2 has a 1.5-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen. This display, with its black background and punchy colors, is glossy, rich, and responsive. It has a slight curve to it, like the first Gear Fit, but lacks the weird bezel of its predecessor.

And Samsung has opted to display all of the data vertically on the band, which means you don’t have to twist your wrist to read things like notifications.

To enjoy music, connect Gear Fit2 to Bluetooth speaker or headphones.

IP68 rating means it’s water-resistant in up to 5 feet of water for up to 30 minutes; rinse residue/dry after wet. See user manual.

Compatible with select devices using Android 4.4 and later with at least 1.5GB RAM. Supported devices may vary by carrier and device. Some features may not be available. For best results, connect with compatible Samsung Galaxy devices.

Gear Fit2 is also about the same size as the previous iteration – however it will now come in two sizes for different wrists: small (size of wrist: 125-170mm) and large (size of wrist: 155-210mm). It doesn’t sound like much but for people with smaller wrists, like me, it sounds like a chorus of Hallelujah. Generally, fitness trackers and smartwatches are now getting better at supplying us tiny wristed people with good fits, and a size small Gear Fit2 sits snug on my arm. The one button prong also fastens on like magic – quick, easy and hassle-free compared to the likes of Fitbits and Jawbones.

Despite the variations in sizes, there’s no difference in features, display size, resolution or battery, except that the large version is slightly heavier at 30 grams while the smaller is 28 grams.

There are also more colour options now as you can choose from black, blue and pink in both sizes. They aren’t the flashiest of options and while mine is black, the texture does give it an added layer to lessen the boring colours.

Activity tracking and heart rate

Keeping with the trend of auto-tracking, the Gear Fit2 can auto-detect and track steps, calories and sleep, along with being able to recognise when you’re doing squats, riding a bike, using a rowing machine or doing yoga, which it will then log accordingly. More on the fitness portion later.

Fit2 can also detect when you’re sleeping and napping. Fit2 then takes all this data and sticks it in a 24-hour log to give you a sense of what you’ve been up to. It even adds in times you didn’t have the wearable on so you’ll know when it wasn’t tracking.

It’s a neat service to see how many calories you’ve burned from each activity and when you’ve done everything. From what I can tell, it was also pretty accurate in noting my strenuous walking paces and light bouts of activity.

Water and caffeine intake are other areas you can track with Fit2. They’re basically the same app, which requires you manually record how much water or caffeine you’ve consumed – with the difference being that you’re trying to hit a target with water, and you’re trying to limit yourself with caffeine.

Fit2 also checks on your heart rate every 10 minutes, but monitoring becomes continuous once you begin tracking most activities. Some activities, like rowing and the “other workout” category in the list, don’t make use of heart rate tracking, though. You can also turn it off to conserve battery life and tag manual heart rate checks as specific activities to better keep track of each lull and spike.

For the most part, heart rate tracking has been shaky. If you’re pushing hard during more strenuous workouts, the Fit2’s heart rate measurements can be off by as much as 20 beats per minute compared to the Polar H7 heart rate sensor, which is worn on a strap around your chest, and the Garmin Fenix 3 HR.

The Fit2’s heart rate tracking is remains steady in general, with measurements often within two to 10 beats per minute from the Fenix 3 HR and Polar.

It’s worth noting that inconsistent heart rate is an ongoing issue with most wearables using optical sensors, as we’ve widely reported. However, our testing of Garmin and Fitbit devices have seen fairly decent reporting of heart rate (between 2-5bpm) until you push heavy interval loads where longer lag times kick in. With discrepancies of up to 10bpm in normal ranges, the Samsung Gear Fit2 doesn’t hit that standard, and will certainly fall below par for some users. That said, all optical heart rate sensors are imperfect, and choosing a device requires honesty about how you will use that data.

Fitness tracking

Though there’s no altimeter, Samsung says the Gear Fit2 can still detect when you walk up stairs. The other sensors packed inside include GPS, heart rate monitor, gyroscope, barometer and accelerometer.

Again, the GPS is completely built-in so you don’t have to carry your phone around during outdoor workouts. You can also see a map of your running or biking route (along with running pace) all displayed on the screen.

As mentioned, Gear Fit2 can auto-detect workouts, or you can manually choose one. After you select a type of workout, you can pick a goal for that workout. The goals vary but examples include target pace, duration, distance or calories – or you can choose to have no goal at all. The Gear Fit2 can even read status updates to your connected headphones at various intervals.

The Gear Fit2’s auto-tracking was fairly accurate and it was able to calculate when I started walking at a ‘good pace’ until the time I stopped. Walking around my neighbourhood and walking hurriedly to appointments at E3 would trigger the Gear Fit2. It would vibrate, tell me I was keeping up the pace and showed a timer that had started tracking several minutes before which reassured me it was logging everything accordingly.

When you manually start your workout, the Gear Fit2 gives a 3-second countdown before the timer begins. As mentioned, for my runs the Gear Fit2 is able to track my GPS location, the distance, calories burned, pace, run speed and heart rate.

The Gear Fit2’s fitness tracking performance may look impressive to enthusiasts looking to get into shape, but if you’re already wearing a dedicated fitness watch, you may not be so easily swayed. Aesthetically, the difference between the two devices is like comparing a Kindle e-reader to a sleek tablet.

Additionally, swiping through the touchscreen is cumbersome when you’re active and moving. The UI is fine if you’re stationary, but pushing a button to get your workout stats is far easier than having to precisely swipe on such a small surface. Half the time, I felt like if I wanted to do this much work with hitting a button to turn on the display and figuring out where to swipe, I might as well reach into my pocket and pull out my Galaxy S7 to check my workout on Samsung’s own S Health application.

Notifications and apps

Notifications include text, calls, email, apps and calendar. Double tapping on notifications changes the font and makes them bigger to read, while double tapping again shrinks the font. Similar to most smartwatches and the Band 2, you can also send pre-written quick replies and emoticons to anyone who calls or messages you – with a slight caveat.

Only the native Samsung messenger app and Facebook Messages allow actions. Other apps, like Instagram and Messenger for SMS texting, only let you open the notification on your phone to reply there. There’s also no microphone to send your own clipped messages.

The app for the Gear Fit2 is as bare-bones as you can get, however it does come with S Health. If you’ve used any other Samsung wearable, you’ll get the gist of it. Your steps, sleep and more are kept in one place so you can access whatever you want. Then there’s the Gear manager app which holds the key to watch faces, specific apps and settings for the Gear Fit2.

Battery and compatibility

According to Samsung, the Gear Fit2’s 200 mAh battery should last up to three to four days, or five if you’re generous with usage. My time spent using the Fit2 involved a screen brightness of six, receiving and sending text messages, getting calendar, call, app and social notifications plus using it during exercise. With all that running, the Fit2 only lasted two days at most.

Charging requires about an hour or so depending on how dead the Gear Fit2 is. It comes with a proprietary USB cradle that can sit on your nightstand or desk.

Gear Fit2 isn’t the mess Gear S was in terms of compatibility, yet it’s still sorely lacking in this area since it will only work with handsets running Android 4.4 and above. Most Android Wear devices have limited capabilities with iOS but nonetheless, it is still an available option. I’m hoping round three will let Apple users enjoy Samsung’s devices too.

The Amazon Fire TV is a streaming media player, which means it takes content from the Internet (videos, music, games, etc.) and displays it on your TV. The Fire TV comes in two models: the Amazon Fire TV, which is a small box and the Fire TV Stick. The two models work very similarly but obviously there are some differences.

The main differences between the two models:

Both models support 1080p HD resolution. The box also supports 4K Ultra HD.

The Fire TV box connects to your TV with an HDMI cable and plugs into the wall with a standard A/C adapter. The Fire TV Stick plugs directly into an HDMI port on your TV, which makes it great for wall-mounted TVs. The power comes from a USB cable that you can plug into a USB port on your TV or into the wall with the included adapter.

The box is faster and has more memory. It also has a port for connecting it to your router with an Ethernet cable and a USB port and microSD slot to provide additional storage, none of which the stick has.

The remote for the box has voice-search capability; the latest version of the stick, released in the fall of 2015, comes with a voice remote as well, but you can also get it with a non-voice remote for $10 less.

The box has a bigger library of supported apps.

Watch Streaming Videos
Not surprisingly, the Fire TV is very tightly integrated with the Amazon Instant Video service. But there are tons of other content providers that work with it including Netflix, Hulu, HBO GO and HBO NOW, Sling TV, ESPN, Disney, PBS, History, YouTube, NBA, and many more.

Note: Buying an Amazon Fire TV does not give you access to the content you can watch on it, just like buying a TV does not give you access to cable TV shows. You need to have accounts with each service that provides the content (some free, some paid) and/or subscribe to a cable/satellite package that gives you permission to access shows from specific networks through the Fire TV.

Listen to Streaming Audio
The Fire TV supports lots of music services as well, including their own Amazon Music, Pandora, Spotify, and iHeart Radio.

Play Games
There are free and paid games available for both devices, including highly popular ones like Crossy Road, Candy Crush Saga, and Minecraft.

Mirror a Mobile Device’s Screen
If you have a compatible Kindle Fire tablet or Android device, you can duplicate your screen on your TV. This has a couple of benefits:

Any streaming media you can access via your compatible device you can now watch on your TV—for example, you can watch shows from broadcast and cable networks this way if the network streams them on their websites or through mobile apps that don’t have built-in Fire TV support.

You can also see any non-streaming content from your tablet or phone on your TV. Maybe you want to scroll through your Twitter feed on a large screen or access your email or browse match.com profiles—anything you’re doing on the device will display on your TV.

Where to Buy

If you want the best price, Amazon is certainly the place for you to go Amazon Fire TV (99.99$) and Fire TV Stick (49.99$)

How to use?

The process for setting up the Fire TV is basically the same as it is for any streaming media player:

Connect the Fire TV to your TV and plug it in. Switch your TV’s input to the one you’re using with your Fire TV.

Connect the Fire TV to the Internet. The Fire TV has an on-screen wizard to walk you through the steps to get connected.

Connect to the content providers you want to watch/use.

Connect the Fire TV to the Television and Plug It In

To connect the box to the TV, you’ll need an HDMI cable with full-sized plugs on each end. This doesn’t come with the Fire TV; you’ll need to get your own. Plug one end of the cable into the box and the other end into one of the HDMI ports on your TV. The stick just plugs directly into the port; no cable needed.

Note the number of the port (e.g. HDMI 1, HDMI 2…) and use your television remote (NOT your Amazon Fire TV remote) to switch to that input. You’ll know you’re on the right channel when you see the Fire TV logo on the screen.

Note: If you don’t have your television’s remote, your cable/satellite/universal remote probably has an Input button but if it doesn’t your TV should have a button on it to switch inputs. When you want to go back to watching regular TV, use the Input button to switch back to the port where your TV signal goes into the TV.

Next, connect the power cord to the box/stick and plug it in. Note that there is no on or off switch for the Amazon Fire TV; it’s always on (but uses very little energy when it’s not actually in use).

Connect the Fire TV to the Internet

With the box, you can connect to your Internet router using an Ethernet cable (also not included) or wirelessly. If you use a cable, it will automatically detect the Internet signal. If you connect wirelessly, the messages on the TV screen will walk you through the steps to connect.

Connect to the Content Providers You Want to Watch/Use

The Amazon Video and Music services come pre-installed on your system including any watchlists and playlists you’ve set up. So you can just use your remote to navigate through the interface.

For third-party apps, you’ll first need to install them on the player and then sign in to any accounts associated with them. The screenshots below show the steps for installing and signing into A&E.

There are two different ways to install apps on your Fire TV: through the TV interface and from the Amazon website.

Installing an App Through the Fire TV interface

The home screen will have a number of popular apps listed as well as ones recommended for you. If the app you want to install isn’t already showing up, you can search for it using the text-search function (top of the left-hand menu) or the voice search feature from the remote. The latter will bring up various options for what it heard you say.

When you select the right option, it will then show you a screen with various results, broken down by category. When you click on the chosen app name, it will take you to a screen with more information about that app. You then click on the button that says Free to begin downloading and installing the app. Once it’s finished, the button will change to say Open.

When you return to the Fire TV’s home screen and scroll down to Apps, you’ll now see the app added to your App Library. When you scroll over to it, a number of options will appear.

Installing an App Through the Amazon Website

Go to the Fire TV Apps list on amazon.com.

Search for the app you want to install. Select your Fire TV from the Deliver To dropdown box. The next time you start up your Fire TV, the app will be added to your Library.

Using the Voice Remote

The original Amazon Fire TV box came with a remote control that let you use your voice to search through the Amazon catalog of movies, TV shows, music, games and so on. With version 2 of the player, they’ve expanded the voice capabilities to let you not only search through a few additional content providers (Hulu, HBO GO, etc.) but to also use Amazon’s voice assistant, Alexa, with your Fire TV.

What You Need

To enjoy Alexa on your Fire TV you, at the minimum need the following things:

A first generation Fire TV or above, updated to Fire OS 5 or above with the included voice remote.

A first generation Fire TV Stick or above, updated to Fire OS 5 with the optional voice remote.

Support for the older Fire TV units is a relatively new (and welcome) change–now anyone with a Fire TV can use Alexa. You can check your Fire TV version number by navigating to Settings > System > About on your Fire TV.

For lack of a better definition, you can think of Alexa as Amazon’s Siri, the voice assistant used with iPhones and iPads. Alexa does a number of things including answering questions, providing weather forecasts, setting alarms, building shopping lists, and controlling lights if you have the related products.

How to Use Alexa On the Fire TV

If you’ve recently purchased your Fire TV or updated to Fire OS 5 or above, Alexa integration is automatically turned on–though if you haven’t used one of Alexa’s specific triggers you may not have realized it. Let’s take a look at how to trigger Alexa with the voice remote and then how to customize your Alexa experience.

To summon Alexa, let’s start from the main Fire TV menu. Press and hold the microphone button on your voice remote.

Let’s start off with a simple natural language command. Press and hold the microphone button and begin speaking (you’ll see the “Listening…” microphone indicator pop up on the screen). Make a weather request like: “What’s the weather like in Beverly Hills?”

Almost instantly–the Alexa system is really fast–you’ll get audio feedback and a nice looking pop-over information card with the forecast.

Hit the back button on the remote to return to the main screen. Let’s try another simple command to dip into our Prime music collection: “Play some jazz music.”

“All Jazz” courtesy of Prime Music, with some nice cover art to go with it, will start playing and be presented in an information card.

If you want an on-screen run through of some various tricks and techniques you can always head over to Settings > Applications > Alexa > Things To Try for a laundry list of commands.

Mirroring Your Kindle Fire, Fire Phone, or Android Tablet

Setting up the mirroring is easy. With the Fire TV remote, hold the Home button for a few seconds until the Quick Menu comes up. Select Mirroring.

On your mobile device, go into Settings and find the option for Display Mirroring or a similar name. (On a Kindle Fire HDX, go to Settings > Display & Sounds > Display Mirroring). Select your Fire TV from the list of devices showing. It takes about a minute for your Fire TV to start the mirroring but once it’s going, it stays on your TV screen until you turn it off.

Note: Once you’re mirroring your device, anything you do on it will be done on your TV. So if you switch apps on your phone or tablet, they’ll switch on your TV as well.
