LG has a line of robotic vacuums called Roboking – they are pitched as being square shaped because your house it. I guess it’s a little bit of a dig on the round design of some of the other robotic vacuums on the market, and how they can miss corners due to their design.

Regardless of this one design difference, the people that buy these vacuums find them to be pretty good machines. They cost a little more than some of the competitors, but that different might be justified in some of the features you get. Stuff like better corner cleaning and digital bumpers can make a difference to some people when buying.

LG has another similar model on Amazon, called the HomeBot 3.0, which has a similar design. It’s fairly well rated.

The quick answer is yes. The reasons are the interesting part.

You may have noticed that when you vacuum your home, your machine might kick up a lot of dust and particles. If your vacuum cleaner happens to be a poorly maintained, older model of vacuum, there is a good chance it might be causing just as much harm as good.

Vacuum cleaners can collect dust and particles in their parts, and if not cleaned or maintained regularly, can release those particles back into the air during cleaning. Things like spores, bacteria and other nasty stuff can be included in this.

Basically, the best things to do to ensure that your vacuum cleaning is actually having a positive impact on your health are:

Buy a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter

Clean your vacuum regularly

Clean any filters and parts that collect dust regularly

Clean our house regularly

Clean tough spots (under furniture or behind furniture) regularly

Regularity seems to be the key concept here. Don’t lapse on cleaning or vacuum maintenance, and buy a decent vacuum (it doesn’t have to be the high-end stuff) with a HEPA filter.

Another tip that I use, personally, is to run my air purifier when vacuuming.

I like to compare the air in my apartment to the water in my fish tank. Except you can’t see what’s in the air whereas you can see what’s in the water (usually).

If you stir up the sand in the bottom of my fish tank, the water becomes foggy, and the filters in the fish tank need to work harder to clear the fog in the water. The same thing happens to the air in your home when you vacuum. The vacuum cleaning process will likely kick up dust and particles into the air. Except you probably won’t be able to see them. If you have strong in-home air purification, the air will be cleared quickly, such as in the case where you might have an air purifier connected to your central heating or cooling system. A stand-alone air purifier can also be used to clear the air after vacuuming as well.

The idea of an air purifier might not be as necessary in a very low-dust home or environment. But if you have pets, kids, or lots of indoor-to-outdoor traffic and vice-versa, you might have a tendency to kick up a lot of dust when cleaning. If you need some tips on picking a good stand alone air purifier, check out our air purifier reviews.

As far as health/vacuuming goes, the bottom line is this: care for your equipment and clean regularly. If you have really old or bad vacuuming equipment, consider replacing it. If you are having problems with dust after vacuuming, consider further air filtration. Or maybe consider getting rid of your carpets, seriously. Hard floors don’t nearly promote the dust and air related health problems that carpets and rugs can.

G-tech seems to be on to something here – they have designed a handheld vacuum, The Multi, that is built to handle the tough detailed work that goes into vacuum cleaning. The market is buzzing that this could rival some of the stuff put out by Dyson.

While I don’t like to put Dyson on a pedestal, this is a good comparison for G-tech.

G-tech has already had the AirRam upright vacuum cleaner on the market for a while, with mixed reviews and feedback, and now they are going to add the Multi to their product lineup.

The market will decide whether or not the G-tech Multi stands up to use by everyday users. It’s not really available in the USA yet, at least I can’t find it online to buy anywhere, it seems to only be available in the UK so far.

It does look like a promising handheld vacuum though, and if it gets good feedback from buyers I will likely pick one up, as I use my handheld vacuum a lot but have never found one that felt better-than-awkward while cleaning.

What are some features that the Multi will have?

Powerful motor and high air flow

Designed to clean crevices and tough to reach spaces

Cordless operation, 22V Lithium Ion battery, 30 minutes of operation time

14 inch extension tube

Attachments: Crevice tool, dusting brush, upholstery tool and flexible hose

Searchlights that illuminate the cleaning area

2 year guarantee

Why would you put a robotic vacuum on a counter top? Certain instances might cause you to try something like this on the fly, without thinking ahead enough. For example, these people decided to clean up some spilled cereal by placing their vacuum on the counter. But when they left it on the counter, it managed to switch on again and ended up on the stove top:

“The home-owner had put the small robot on the work surface to clean up some spilled cereal,” he said.

“Once the robot had done its job it was switched off but left on the kitchen sideboard,” he said.

“Somehow it seems to have reactivated itself and made its way along the work surface where it pushed a cooking pot out of the way and basically that was the end of it.

“It pretty quickly started to melt underneath and then stuck to the kitchen hotplate. It then caught fire. By the time we arrived, it was just a pile of ash.

This is one of those instances that probably could have been avoided, but hey it’s just a mistake. People are going to have to get used to robots in the home, especially if they have the ability to move around on their own. When you get machines that can move on their own, I suppose it’s just a matter of time before they manage to do something like this on their own as well.

Either way – be mindful of what your robotic vacuums are capable of. They are designed to be very safe, but if you use them outside of their normal context you never know what can happen.

The word on the street is that the newest Roomba 880 is taking a big step forward for robotic vacuums, with newly designed features and not just minor improvements to existing models.

iRobot is saying that the newest model has 50% better dirt pickup than previous models, and other features such as a larger collection bin and better battery life. The vacuum can be put on a cleaning schedule, and charges itself on the charging station.

The extractor that is on the bottom of this unit is the biggest change. Check out this video to see how it’s different from previous models:

This might be worth looking at if you have been skeptical of robotic vacuums, mainly because this is a turning point for the industry. This model is powerful enough that it might start to turn the heads of those that haven’t really payed much attention to robotic vacuums due to the fact that they can seem kind of gimmicky.

These are great vacuums for everyday cleaning and for cleaning in places that might be more of a pain for you to reach regularly, such as underneath furniture like beds and tables. Are you ready to take a serious look at one of these yet?

Most people probably wouldn’t really think that it’s possible to go out and buy a single cleaning tool that can both mop and vacuum. But with the new Dyson Hard, you can have just that.

To sum it up simply, this is a lightweight, cordless vacuum that has a mop/pad attachment. The mop attachment can be used with standard wet wipes on the market, and it can also use wipes made by Dyson. The unit is battery powered and can last for about 15 minutes on a charge.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_954Pug4YM

This unit has the typical Dyson look, and can be purchased online. Be sure to read the reviews before buying this one, since the reviews are a bit mixed. But if you understand where the reviewers are coming from, you can make a decision on whether or not this is a good vacuum/mop for you and your home.

Some interesting facts about this little guy:

He helped his grandfather repair vacuums, which helped his interest as a collector

His parents used a vacuum to sooth him to sleep as a baby

He spends his own money to find and buy rare vacuum models

He was given his first vacuum cleaner as a gift for his fourth birthday

Part of his collection is a 1930’s Electrolux that he’s entered into a competition to find the oldest working domestic appliance

So, this guy must know a lot about vacuums. What’s his favorite?

‘My favourite is a 1960s Dirt Devil because it’s the best for picking up my Jack Russell dog Jacket’s hairs.’

It looks like the new energy saving rules for the European Union that are going into effect will be taking a bite out the power in many of the vacuum cleaners on the market.

The new rules are pretty straightforward:

New machines cannot have motors exceeding 1600W from September 2014 and on.

New machines cannot have motors exceeding 900W from 2017 and on.

On the surface, this might seem like a bit hit to many consumer electronic industries, like vacuum cleaners. Most vacuums on the market currently have around a 1800W motor, with some as powerful as 2200W. So, as you can see, the new rules will take a good bite out of the power that existing vacuums are relying on.

People that are in the manufacturing and cleaning industries argue that the power of vacuums is very important, at least for the current designs and technology trends in most vacuums on the market. I suppose that over time, technologies will change to adapt to the power usage restrictions, maybe focusing on more efficiency and how to squeeze more out of less in terms of wattage.

These photos make it obvious how visually interesting the light patterns can be when captured with long exposure, but it’s also fun to see the types of patterns these machines will run while cleaning your carpets. As you can see in some of the pictures, these things can be pretty thorough.

I found this little tidbit of information pretty interesting.

Apparently James Dyson developed his dual cyclone technology over the course of 5 years in his garage. He did this because of frustration with other vacuums he had used. Dyson started out as a consumer of vacuums, and had thoughts that there must be a better way to design vacuums. So he created the bagless technology used in the Dyson vacuums today.

How many prototypes did he make to create his technology? Around 5,000. I haven’t been able to verify the exact number from multiple sources, but this article states that he made 5,127 prototypes.

That’s a lot of dedication to solving a small problem of clogged vacuum bags. But it’s payed off for James greatly, as his vacuums are wildly popular.
