How is it that you have no problem paying your bills on company time using company equipment, or even spending 20 minutes using the phone to place an order to your favorite catalog, but you think it’s a damn shame that the Administrative Assistant took $10.00 from petty funds to buy gas as she ran errands?  You might even support her dismissal for such brazen dishonesty. You may also rationalize that what you are doing does not directly cost your company. It isn’t? Damn skippy, you better believe it does!!! Time is money!

The question of ethics for most of us is gray rather than black and white. This is due to how we individually define values and morality and the rules may differ from culture to culture and from one period of time to the other. These standards give meaning to behaviors called ethics. Ethics tells us why we should behave in a certain manner, while values tell us how we should behave.

Organizations may try to legislate these behaviors through company policies, but we often step into the grey area consciously applying our grey matter of rationalization. For instance, ethics state you cannot give your friend or family inside information to get the upper hand in a contract or investment. But blood is thicker than water right? – And you may go right along as long as you don’t get caught. Have you ever switched tags on clothing to get your ideal outfit for the best price, or do you have a girlfriend who is known to keep the tags on a dress she plans to wear and then promptly return it? Would you classify these acts as stealing? Unethical?

The only crime for some is – getting caught. Otherwise you are OK with committing that questionable act. Wasn’t Enron the poster child of this philosophy? But practice does not become perfect and eventually we do get caught. But that’s the easy stuff. Check this out and tell me what you would do…

You Took Too Long, Let’s Just Be Friends

There are exceptions to every rule and people define friends in different ways, but generally these laws hold true.  But very often people take this to another level, and make the mistake of eliminating potential mates for stupid reasons.  Everyone has heard of it, the “friend zone” that is mostly used by women.  To give a bit of perspective men will only tell a woman  he recently met that she is a friend on rare occasions.  1. He isn’t feeling her and wants to be nice, 2. He feels the timing isn’t right and she has potential so he might want to pursue something with her at a later time, 3. The circumstances of the relationship (Distance, Family Situation, etc..) are the only obstacles to both of you getting together.

The method used by women seems to be fairly random and nonsensical, let me give you an example: women will tell a guy he is a friend because he did not lock her up in some undetermined period of time.  The worst part about this is once a man has been placed in this box there is no return from this place, once a woman has made this decision somehow she is unable to move the man back to potential mate mode. So why should the man even bother to care after the proclamation has been made?

First of all they are not friends, she hardly knows  him, but now all of a sudden they’re friends?  All of a sudden he is no longer datable when she was feeling him before?  This seems like something out of high school, we are adults now the kid games can stop.  If women want the professional who handles his business, has the portfolio, and is mentally stable they have to understand that this guy became successful on his own.  He made the choices to do the things needed to be successful, and many times that means sacrificing some social aspects of his life, and giving the company a little more of his time than he would like.

Just because you’re nice looking, sexy, and sporting your heels doesn’t mean this guy is going to cut off some of his earnings for you right away.  You have to show some interest in him from time to time, just like he has to earn your trust and affection.  I am not saying that women need to “court” men, I still believe that duty falls on the fellas, but women need to loosen up a bit and let a guy know they are interested as well.  Pick up the phone and call him, return his voice messages in a timely fashion, send him a text out of the blue, all this is done to distinguish yourself from all the other women coming at him.

Don’t make the mistake of listening to your single, married, or longtime hitched friends on this subject! They have nothing to lose, and your relationship plights are entertainment for them since they have long been out of the game.  If you like a guy go for the win, you do it in all other aspects of your life, but when it’s decision time for a guy you are into some odd rules hold you back?  If someone told you that a woman shouldn’t be partner in a law firm isn’t that going to drive you to make partner and get to where you want despite the critics?  Why not go after you man with just as much tenacity and force as you do with the other aspects of your life?

Trust me if you take the time to understand the man and show him your interested in him as well, rather than sticking to your tried and true methods which have landed you mixed results for the last 20+ years, you might be surprised.  In many cases the guy is really into the woman, but she just can’t see it.  A busy man with everything going for him kept your number and called you after several months have passed.  Why would he take the time to do that just to have the door closed before he can reveal his intentions, he knows he has some making up to do because of the communication gap, so you will probably get treated even better.

The professional man has time on his side, and he is not going to deviate from his plan just because he sees a pretty face.  If his time is worth $50 /hr every time he puts a woman over his work it can turn into a monetary loss, then if it does not work out or the woman is wasting his time it can be a real detriment to what he has built.  Imagine if this happens over and over, at some point the screen goes up and only the ones who distinguish themselves will get through.  He has been in the game for a long time, and he has women approaching him every day and has no shortage of dating opportunities.  Since one can remember women have wanted men to distinguish themselves from the other suitors isn’t it only right for women to do the same?

I’m Sorry I Messed Up, Are You Dating Anybody Right Now?

The game of courtship can be a rewarding one, men earn themselves a beautiful, loving mate and women earn romance stories to brag to their girlfriends about. One of my best friends planted his wife’s engagement ring amongst the branches of the tree that they first kissed under. It is no doubt that she will tell that story forever – they just celebrated the birth of their second child, it’s a beautiful thing. The majority of my friends are seemingly happy in their marriages, so the statistics of divorce rates, alimony and child support woes that I read about daily gets balanced out just by hanging out with them. One thing I’ve noticed however is that all of them were either married out of High School or a few years after college – the younger 20s.

As myself and other men of my age grow older we lose tolerance, accept independence and make no pretense at wanting that to change. The women we date are hungry, wanting to gain what those twenty-somethings have and pushing to get wedded, seeded and established before the mighty four oh. Many of us men still aren’t ready or we will never be ready – this causes conflict. For this reason a man who is ready to settle down will oft-times come out with it within the first few weeks of dating. Other men are gun shy, prior victims to relationship assault or simply observers to enough train-wreck marriages to know that it is not for them. Many women choose not to respect the man’s choice, or choose to have selective hearing when he says no. In their closed, selfish minds, they can “make him” marry them.

Lose My Number, I’ve Already Lost Yours

As a grown man I have had my fair share of women playing games, women not knowing what they want and women regretting that they had let me go. I lost the empathy, care and compassion for those that “could have been” when the seasons changed, my worth multiplied and my taste refined. I keep looking forward, choosing to spend time with those who value my companionship. I have no reason to compromise who I am, what I believe in and what I have. Women who lost interest because I “work too much” or “took too long to call”. The women who think that the world revolves around them, blind to the fact that I have had choices and that I seek no friendship from women I “tried to talk to” or “used to talk to”. I’m a man, we don’t pursue women as friends, get that into your cute little heads and think on it.

Its an ongoing debate as to whether jealousy is inherently a female trait or not. While many guys tend to fall into the passionate/lover boy role because we know ourselves better than any woman does. Disrespect warrants you flipping the switch into beast mode on both her and whoever the other transgressor is.

There was a time when men going to the spa was considered a gay activity, so I can understand where the man’s man would want to argue the validity of him laying in a chair with someone rubbing his feet. However, lately, there has been an influx of men who go to the spa to the point that they now make up about a third of the spa population. The places to go are no longer catered to women where the man feels out of place, but they have gender neutral atmospheres and special treatments just for him.

MANicures
As a woman with soft skin, being touched by a man with callused hands definitely does not feel as good as it should.  I love a hard worker just as much as the next woman, but hard workers can take care of their hands just like the next man.  The manicure is simply a treatment for your skin and exfoliation of dead skin off your hands with professional products that work way better than the rock salt you have sitting on your bathroom counter.  THEY WILL NOT PAINT YOUR NAILS!!! I repeat – they will NOT paint your nails.  So next time you notice your rough palms after a week of hitting the gym without gloves, treat yourself to 30 minutes of a manicure.  Your hands will be left looking and feeling so good to her she won’t want you to stop touching her.

If you are an athletic man, you will benefit from the sports massage.  It is way different than the general pressure rubbing by a masseuse.  A sports massage is catered to you and your sport of choice – golfers get the focus on the shoulders and back, runners have focus on legs, and so on.  Athletes can always use a deep tissue massage to increase flexibility and addressing repetitive motion problems.  Again, spas are more aware of their male population these days, so have no fear as there are more manly choices other than the lavender or flower scented oils.

Telling a man that he needs to be a bit more manicured may sound as an insult at first, but trust me guys – the ladies will love you for it. Understand that being a well manicured man does not mean that you have to go get your “nails done” every two weeks with your girl.  It means that you care about your skin, your appearance, and the way you are perceived by that special someone in your life.  If it helps you can think about it as if it’s a glorified barber shop experience where the man talk is replaced with man magazines and newspapers and women who cater to your every need.

Being of a stocky, hard and solid fighter’s stature, you would think that the man would not get tried throughout his life, but based on the casts and scars he would show up with, and tales that I would hear from him (always in a joking manner), Tommy had more than earned the right to call himself a warrior.

One day Tommy told me of a little secret that he was working on to help grapplers develop their skills without the risk of sprains and broken bones to their opponents. Hearing this from anyone else but the man who had successfully made his own money through a t-shirt business and a nail shop, I would have laughed it off with a mental “ya right”, but I knew my man as a straight-talker. I knew it would be only  a matter of time before this thing came to fruition and I was happy to see him on the local Channel 8 News pimping the Tommy Boi.

If you have a chance to pick this beast up for your gym, store or personal use, I will urge you to do it so that you can improve on your technique. This invention was not made by some dreamer in a suit, or a guy who hasn’t earned his stripes in the ring. This Tommy Boi comes from a warrior, and if you are a warrior or a warrior in training you know that it is only people of your ilk that can provide you the tools for combat.
