The Future of the Global Muslim Population

The world’s Muslim population is expected to increase by about 35% in the next 20 years, rising from 1.6 billion in 2010 to 2.2 billion by 2030, according to new population projections by the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life.

Globally, the Muslim population is forecast to grow at about twice the rate of the non-Muslim population over the next two decades – an average annual growth rate of 1.5% for Muslims, compared with 0.7% for non-Muslims. If current trends continue, Muslims will make up 26.4% of the world’s total projected population of 8.3 billion in 2030, up from 23.4% of the estimated 2010 world population of 6.9 billion.

While the global Muslim population is expected to grow at a faster rate than the non-Muslim population, the Muslim population nevertheless is expected to grow at a slower pace in the next two decades than it did in the previous two decades. From 1990 to 2010, the global Muslim population increased at an average annual rate of 2.2%, compared with the projected rate of 1.5% for the period from 2010 to 2030.

These are among the key findings of a comprehensive report on the size, distribution and growth of the global Muslim population. The report by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life seeks to provide up-to-date estimates of the number of Muslims around the world in 2010 and to project the growth of the Muslim population from 2010 to 2030. The projections are based both on past demographic trends and on assumptions about how these trends will play out in future years. Making these projections inevitably entails a host of uncertainties, including political ones. Changes in the political climate in the United States or European nations, for example, could dramatically affect the patterns of Muslim migration.

The declining growth rate is due primarily to falling fertility rates in many Muslim-majority countries, including such populous nations as Indonesia and Bangladesh. Fertility is dropping as more women in these countries obtain a secondary education, living standards rise and people move from rural areas to cities and towns. (See the Related Factors section for more details.)

The slowdown in Muslim population growth is most pronounced in the Asia- Pacific region, the Middle East-North Africa and Europe, and less sharp in sub-Saharan Africa. The only region where Muslim population growth is accelerating through 2020 is the Americas, largely because of immigration. (For details, see the charts on population growth in the sections of this report on Asia-Pacific, Middle-East-North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, Europe and the Americas.)

Falling birth rates eventually will lead to significant shifts in the age structure of Muslim populations. While the worldwide Muslim population today is relatively young, the so-called Muslim “youth bulge” – the high percentage of Muslims in their teens and 20s – peaked around the year 2000 and is now declining. (See the Age Structure section for more details.)

In 1990, more than twothirds of the total population of Muslim-majority countries was under age 30. Today, people under 30 make up about 60% of the population of these countries, and by 2030 they are projected to fall to about 50%.

At the same time, many Muslim-majority countries will have aging populations; between 2010 and 2030, the share of people age 30 and older in these countries is expected to rise from 40% to 50%, and the share of people age 60 and older is expected nearly to double, from 7% to 12%.

Muslim-majority countries, however, are not the only ones with aging populations. As birth rates drop and people live longer all around the globe, the population of the entire world is aging. As a result, the global Muslim population will remain comparatively youthful for decades to come. The median age in Muslim-majority countries, for example, rose from 19 in 1990 to 24 in 2010 and is expected to climb to 30 by 2030. But it will still be lower than the median age in North America, Europe and other more-developed regions, which rose from 34 to 40 between 1990 and 2010 and is projected to be 44 in 2030. By that year, nearly three-inten of the world’s youth and young adults – 29.1% of people ages 15-29 – are projected to be Muslims, up from 25.8% in 2010 and 20.0% in 1990.

Other key findings of the study include:

Worldwide

Sunni Muslims will continue to make up an overwhelming majority of Muslims in 2030 (87- 90%). The portion of the world’s Muslims who are Shia may decline slightly, largely because of relatively low fertility in Iran, where more than a third of the world’s Shia Muslims live.
As of 2010, about three-quarters of the world’s Muslims (74.1%) live in the 49 countries in which Muslims make up a majority of the population. More than a fifth of all Muslims (23.3%) live in non-Muslim-majority countries in the developing world. About 3% of the world’s Muslims live in more-developed regions, such as Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
Fertility rates in Muslim-majority countries are closely related to women’s education levels. In the eight Muslim-majority countries where girls generally receive the fewest years of schooling, the average fertility rate (5.0 children per woman) is more than double the average rate (2.3 children per woman) in the nine Muslim-majority countries where girls generally receive the most years of schooling. One exception is the Palestinian territories, where the average fertility rate (4.5 children per woman) is relatively high even though a girl born there today can expect to receive 14 years of formal education.
Fewer than half (47.8%) of married women ages 15-49 in Muslim-majority countries use some form of birth control. By comparison, in non-Muslim-majority, less-developed countries nearly two-thirds (63.3%) of all married women in that age group use some form of birth control.

Asia-Pacific

Nearly three-in-ten people living in the Asia-Pacific region in 2030 (27.3%) will be Muslim, up from about a quarter in 2010 (24.8%) and roughly a fifth in 1990 (21.6%).
Muslims make up only about 2% of the population in China, but because the country is so populous, its Muslim population is expected to be the 19th largest in the world in 2030.

Middle East-North Africa

The Middle East-North Africa will continue to have the highest percentage of Muslim-majority countries. Of the 20 countries and territories in this region, all but Israel are projected to be at least 50% Muslim in 2030, and 17 are expected to have a population that is more than 75% Muslim in 2030, with Israel, Lebanon and Sudan (as currently demarcated) being the only exceptions.
Nearly a quarter (23.2%) of Israel’s population is expected to be Muslim in 2030, up from 17.7% in 2010 and 14.1% in 1990. During the past 20 years, the Muslim population in Israel has more than doubled, growing from 0.6 million in 1990 to 1.3 million in 2010. The Muslim population in Israel (including Jerusalem but not the West Bank and Gaza) is expected to reach 2.1 million by 2030.
Egypt, Algeria and Morocco currently have the largest Muslim populations in the Middle East-North Africa. By 2030, however, Iraq is expected to have the second-largest Muslim population in the region – exceeded only by Egypt – largely because Iraq has a higher fertility rate than Algeria or Morocco.

Sub-Saharan Africa

The Muslim population in sub-Saharan Africa is projected to grow by nearly 60% in the next 20 years, from 242.5 million in 2010 to 385.9 million in 2030. Because the region’s non- Muslim population also is growing at a rapid pace, Muslims are expected to make up only a slightly larger share of the region’s population in 2030 (31.0%) than they do in 2010 (29.6%).
Various surveys give differing figures for the size of religious groups in Nigeria, which appears to have roughly equal numbers of Muslims and Christians in 2010. By 2030, Nigeria is expected to have a slight Muslim majority (51.5%).

Europe

In 2030, Muslims are projected to make up more than 10% of the total population in 10 European countries: Kosovo (93.5%), Albania (83.2%), Bosnia-Herzegovina (42.7%), Republic of Macedonia (40.3%), Montenegro (21.5%), Bulgaria (15.7%), Russia (14.4%), Georgia (11.5%), France (10.3%) and Belgium (10.2%).
Russia will continue to have the largest Muslim population (in absolute numbers) in Europe in 2030. Its Muslim population is expected to rise from 16.4 million in 2010 to 18.6 million in 2030. The growth rate for the Muslim population in Russia is projected to be 0.6% annually over the next two decades. By contrast, Russia’s non-Muslim population is expected to shrink by an average of 0.6% annually over the same period.
France had an expected net influx of 66,000 Muslim immigrants in 2010, primarily from North Africa. Muslims comprised an estimated two-thirds (68.5%) of all new immigrants to France in the past year. Spain was expected to see a net gain of 70,000 Muslim immigrants in 2010, but they account for a much smaller portion of all new immigrants to Spain (13.1%). The U.K.’s net inflow of Muslim immigrants in the past year (nearly 64,000) was forecast to be nearly as large as France’s. More than a quarter (28.1%) of all new immigrants to the U.K. in 2010 are estimated to be Muslim.

The Americas

The number of Muslims in Canada is expected to nearly triple in the next 20 years, from about 940,000 in 2010 to nearly 2.7 million in 2030. Muslims are expected to make up 6.6% of Canada’s total population in 2030, up from 2.8% today. Argentina is expected to have the third-largest Muslim population in the Americas, after the U.S. and Canada. Argentina, with about 1 million Muslims in 2010, is now in second place, behind the U.S.
Children under age 15 make up a relatively small portion of the U.S. Muslim population today. Only 13.1% of Muslims are in the 0-14 age group. This reflects the fact that a large proportion of Muslims in the U.S. are newer immigrants who arrived as adults. But by 2030, many of these immigrants are expected to start families. If current trends continue, the number of U.S. Muslims under age 15 will more than triple, from fewer than 500,000 in 2010 to 1.8 million in2030. The number of Muslim children ages 0-4 living in the U.S. is expected to increase from fewer than 200,000 in 2010 to more than 650,000 in 2030.
About two-thirds of the Muslims in the U.S. today (64.5%) are first-generation immigrants (foreign-born), while slightly more than a third (35.5%) were born in the U.S. By 2030, however, more than four-in-ten of the Muslims in the U.S. (44.9%) are expected to be native-born.
The top countries of origin for Muslim immigrants to the U.S. in 2009 were Pakistan and Bangladesh. They are expected to remain the top countries of origin for Muslim immigrants to the U.S. in 2030.

About the Report

This report makes demographic projections. Projections are not the same as predictions. Rather, they are estimates built on current population data and assumptions about demographic trends; they are what will happen if the current data are accurate and the trends play out as expected. But many things – immigration laws, economic conditions, natural disasters, armed conflicts, scientific discoveries, social movements and political upheavals, to name just a few – can shift demographic trends in unforeseen ways, which is why this report adheres to a modest time frame, looking just 20 years down the road. Even so, there is no guarantee that Muslim populations will grow at precisely the rates anticipated in this report and not be affected by unforeseen events, such as political decisions on immigration quotas or national campaigns to encourage larger or smaller families.

The projections presented in this report are the medium figures in a range of three scenarios – high, medium and low – generated from models commonly used by demographers around the world to forecast changes in population size and composition. The models follow what is known as the cohort-component method, which starts with a baseline population (in this case, the current number of Muslims in each country) divided into groups, or cohorts, by age and sex. Each cohort is projected into the future by adding likely gains – new births and immigrants – and subtracting likely losses – deaths and emigrants. These calculations were made by the Pew Forum’s demographers, who collaborated with researchers at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria on the projections for the United States and European countries. (For more details, see Appendix A: Methodology.)

The current population data that underpin this report were culled from the best sources available on Muslims in each of the 232 countries and territories for which the U.N. Population Division provides general population estimates. Many of these baseline statistics were published in the Pew Forum’s 2009 report, Mapping the Global Muslim Population, which acquired and analyzed about 1,500 sources of data – including census reports, large-scale demographic studies and general population surveys – to estimate the number of Muslims in every country and territory. (For a list of sources, see Appendix B: Data Sources by Country.) All of those estimates have been updated for 2010, and some have been substantially revised. (To find the current estimate and projections for a particular region or country, see Muslim Population by Country, 1990-2030.) Since many countries are conducting national censuses in 2010-11, more data is likely to emerge over the next few years, but a cut-off must be made at some point; this report is based on information available as of mid-2010. To the extent possible, the report provides data for decennial years – 1990, 2000, 2010, 2020 and 2030. In some cases, however, the time periods vary because data is available only for certain years or in five-year increments (e.g., 2010-15 or 2030-35).

The definition of Muslim in this report is very broad. The goal is to count all groups and individuals who self-identify as Muslims. This includes Muslims who may be secular or nonobservant. No attempt is made in this report to measure how religious Muslims are or to forecast levels of religiosity (or secularism) in the decades ahead.²

10 Events Surrounding September 11

People all over the world are familiar with what happened on September 11, 2001. On that morning, 19 al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four US commercial passenger jet airliners and intentionally crashed two of them into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. The Twin Towers collapsed within two hours of being struck by the planes. Civilians from over 70 countries were killed in the attacks, with a total of 2,995 casualties. In the months before and after September 11, many important international events occurred. On October 7, 2001, the US military’s Operation Enduring Freedom was launched, starting the War in Afghanistan. This list will be documenting ten news stories and international events surrounding September 11, 2001.

10 - Enron Scandal Revealed

Most Americans are familiar with the failure of the Enron Corporation. Enron was an American energy company based out of Houston, Texas. In 2000, Enron was one of the largest businesses in the world. They had working operations in many areas, mainly electricity, natural gas, communications and pulp and paper. Amazingly, Enron claimed revenues of nearly $101 billion in 2000. The problems for Enron started from the beginning, when a group of executives in the company began misleading the board of directors and audit committee. They did this by hiding billions of dollars in debt, acquired from failed deals and projects. In the months following 9/11, the illegal activity caught up with Enron and the company failed. Enron stock holders lost nearly $11 billion, and the resulting scandal marked the largest bankruptcy reorganization in American history at that time.

The Enron scandal ended the business career of accounting firm Arthur Andersen. Arthur Andersen Corporation was found guilty of unlawful practice in the auditing of Enron. In October of 2001, one month after the attacks in New York and Washington, details of the Enron scandal were leaked to the world press. The story sparked a panic among Enron stock holders, and by December 2, 2001, Enron Corp. filed for one of the largest corporate bankruptcies in US history, with assets of $63.4 billion. Because of the failure, new regulations and legislation were enacted to expand the reliability of financial reporting for public companies. Many conspiracy theories have been formed around the Enron Scandal, and the date on which it was revealed to the public. Most of these claims document the ties between former Texas Governor George W. Bush and Enron founder Kenneth Lay.

09 - Executive Order 13233

In 1972, thousands of official and unofficial FBI records were destroyed, upon the death of J. Edgar Hoover. In fact, in the past it was common practice for high ranking officials to destroy their most important business documents. For this reason, in 1974 the US Congress passed the Presidential Recordings and Materials Preservation Act, placing the presidential records of Richard Nixon in federal custody to prevent their destruction. The Act was meant to reduce secrecy at the highest levels of government, and to give historians the materials they need to perform their duties. The Presidential Records Act of 1978 expanded such protection of historical records. This was accomplished by mandating that all records of former presidents automatically become the property of the federal government upon leaving the Oval Office.

The presidential papers of Ronald Reagan and Vice President George Bush were due to be made public when George W. Bush took office in January, 2001. However, George W. Bush first delayed the release for 90 days, and then repeated the action, pushing the date back into September, 2001. On November 1, 2001, Bush issued Executive Order 13233, limiting public access to the records of former U.S. presidents. The Bush executive order also includes the documents of former vice presidents. Many people were critical of this action, claiming that it violated both the “spirit and letter of existing US laws.” The order severely curtailed public access to presidential records and added to delays in obtaining materials from presidential libraries. On January 21, 2009, Executive Order 13233 was revoked, by executive order of President Barack Obama on his first day in office. Obama essentially restored the original Executive Order 12667.

During his presidency, George W. Bush was accused of acting in violation of the Presidential Records Act of 1978. In 2007, the Bush White House e-mail controversy was revealed. The event started when George W. Bush initiated the, unprecedented, midterm dismissal of seven United States Attorneys on December 7, 2006. The U.S. attorneys were replaced with interim appointees, under provisions in the 2005 USA PATRIOT Act reauthorization. Following the action, a congressional request was called looking for documents indicating why the attorneys were fired. This caused the Bush administration to reveal the fact that not all internal White House emails were available, because they were sent via a non-government domain, that was hosted on an e-mail server not controlled by the federal government. In 2009, it was announced that as many as 22 million emails may have been deleted by the Bush administration.

08 - 2001 Atlantic Hurricane Season

Hurricane Erin was the first, and longest lived, hurricane in the 2001 Atlantic hurricane season. The storm developed from a tropical wave on September 1, 2001, and by September 9 it strengthened into a full blown hurricane. Hurricane Erin passed within 100 miles of Bermuda, and created nasty weather and rip currents along the East Coast of the United States. On September 11, Erin decelerated as it turned to the east, but the hurricane would gain power over Canada and not dissipate until September 15. It is an interesting story because many flights and air traffic control workers were directly affected by Hurricane Erin. The storm produced 6 foot swells off the coast of North Carolina.

The second hurricane of the 2001 season struck on September 12, 2001. The storm is named Hurricane Felix and it originated 1,500 miles (2414 km) south of the Azores. Felix did not impact land, but caused weather problems for boats and aircraft. Hurricane Gabrielle was the third hurricane recorded during the 2001 Atlantic hurricane season. The storm developed on September 11, 2001, in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. By September 13, Gabrielle intensified and accelerated northeastward toward Venice, Florida. On September 14, the storm made landfall near Venice, Florida, and was soon categorized as a hurricane. Hurricane Gabrielle caused heavy rainfall and bad weather conditions in Florida, Alabama, Bermuda and Canada. Three people were reported to have died in the storm, and it caused $230 million in damages. It is truly unfortunate that the September 11th terrorist attacks fell in line with a string of high powered hurricanes.

07 - Abnormal Stock Trading

In the week prior to 9/11, an “extraordinary” amount of put options were placed on United Airlines and American Airlines stocks. If you are unfamiliar with the stock market, a put option is financial contract between two parties that will offer the buyer insurance against a company’s excessive loss. Someone who purchases a put option is expecting a stock to drop or they are protecting their assets. Between September 6 and 7, 4,744 put options were purchased on United Airlines stock, compared to 396 call options. On September 10, 4,516 put options were purchased on American Airlines, as compared to 748 call options. The trading activity was 600% above the normal level. United and American Airlines were the only two companies who had planes hijacked on 9/11. There were also an abnormal number of put options purchased in companies who had a stake in the World Trade Centers.

The majority of the suspicious trading was linked to Deutsche Bank Alex Brown. On September 12, 2001, the head of the bank, Mayo A. Shattuck III, resigned from office. The previous director of the bank was A. B. Krongard, who is the former head of the CIA. Citigroup Inc and Morgan Stanley also received an abnormal number of put options, and both companies held offices in the World Trade Centers, and saw a decrease in stock price after the attacks. On September 10, 2001, Raytheon, a defense contractor, had an anomalously high number of call options traded. The Securities and Exchange Commission launched an insider trading investigation, in which Osama Bin Laden was a suspect, but no action was taken. The trading was traced to areas all over the world, with most activity occurring in the UK, Italy, Germany, Japan, Switzerland, France and the US.

In the days prior to 9/11, the Chicago Exchange saw the highest number of United and American Airlines options traded in history. The names of the investors remain a mystery, because they never claimed their money. After it was discovered that a single U.S.-based institutional investor, with no conceivable ties to al Qaeda, purchased a large amount of these options, the 9/11 Commission dismissed the importance of the events. Unfortunately, the abnormal trading did not tip off law enforcement, as intelligence agencies constantly monitor the stock exchange and the sudden rise in activity could have allowed analysts to “connect the dots” and see that a major event was about to take place involving American Airlines, United Airlines and The World Trade Centers. However, nobody could have imagined the scale of the tragedy.

06 - Death of Ahmad Shah Massoud

In 1979, the Soviet Union began their ten year long conflict with Afghanistan. Ahmad Shah Massoud was a military leader that played a leading role in driving the Soviet army out of Afghanistan in the late 1980s. His military prowess made him a hero in Afghanistan, earning him the nickname Lion of Panjshir. During the war, Massoud was known for his strategic and mass ambushes against Soviet and Afghan convoys. In 1983, the Soviets offered Massoud a truce, which he accepted. He then turned his attention to expanding the Afghan resistance movement, and liberating the northern provinces of Afghanistan. Massoud’s military forces were considered the most effective of all the various Afghan resistance movements.

In the middle of the 1990s, the Taliban took control of approximately 90 percent of Afghanistan. In response, Massoud formed an alliance to fight the Taliban, and provided shelter for people fleeing Afghan cities. However, on September 9, 2001, two days prior to 9/11, Ahmad Shah Massoud was killed by a suicide bomber at Khwaja Bahauddin, in Takhar Province, northeastern Afghanistan. The assassins may have intended to attack several Northern Alliance council members simultaneously because others were killed. Prior to his death, Massoud had warned the European Parliament that a terrorist attack was evident. The timing of the assassination is considered significant by people who believe Osama bin Laden ordered the murder, and wanted Massoud dead before staging the 9/11 attacks. Ahmad Shah Massoud died a national hero, and hundreds of thousands of people attended his funeral. The date of his death, September 9, is observed as a national holiday in Afghanistan, known as Massoud Day.

05 - US Government Exercises

On September 11, 2001, the United States government held a series of military exercises and drills. Operation Northern Vigilance was a NORAD operation, which involved deploying fighter aircraft to the northwestern part of North America, specifically Alaska and Northern Canada. The exercise was one part simulation, one part real world. It was in response to a similar test acted out by Russia on September 11, where long-range bombers were dispatched to Russia’s high north. The exercises were immediately called off after the news of the terrorist attacks and all simulated information was purged from NORADs computer screens. However, the event was a distraction for the US government on 9/11.

Operation Northern Vigilance was not the only US exercise planned for September 11. A series of war games were also acted out, specifically Global Guardian. Global Guardian is an annual, command-level exercise held in the United States. It is an important task, and the purpose of the drill is to test and validate US nuclear command, control and execution procedures. Vigilant Guardian is an exercise that was run in conjunction with Global Guardian. It involved a simulated bomber attack from the former Soviet Union. The drill was conducted in real time, and appeared legitimate in offices and on computers, but without any planes in the air. One of the drills included was a traditional simulated hijacking.

The National Reconnaissance Office drill that was being conducted on September 11, 2001, is the strangest. In the exercise, a simulated small aircraft crashed into one of the towers at the NRO headquarters. No plane was involved in the drill, but to simulate damage from the crash, some stairwells and exits were closed off. A bioterrorism exercise was planned for September 12, 2001. It was named Operation Tripod and included a real life test of the US plan to distribute antibiotics to an entire city population during a bioterrorism attack.

04 - Nimda Virus

In the months before and after September 11, 2001, the United States was bombarded with a series of cyber attacks. A group of criminals exposed vulnerabilities in the Microsoft operating system, and created a buffer overflow virus, which executed arbitrary code and infected hundreds of thousands of computers. By July 19, 2001, the amount of infected hosts reached over 350,000 zombies. A series of separate viruses named Code Red I and Code Red II crippled valuable servers and made calculated attacks on US government computers.

On September 18, 2001, a new virus attacked United States operating systems. The worm was given the name Nimda, and it was an advanced version of Code Red II. Some might say that the Code Red viruses were created in preparation for the much larger Nimda attack, which was executed the week following the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Due to the release date of the virus, members of the American government speculated on a link between the cyber attacks and Al Qaeda, but this theory ended up proving unfounded. The American media did not report much on the virus because of the terrorist attacks.

Multiple propagation vectors allowed Nimda to become the Internet’s most widespread and dangerous virus. It took only 22 minutes for the worm to rip through the American financial sector, causing over $3 billion in damage. The Nimda virus was so effective because it used five different infection vectors. People could, and still can, get the virus via e-mail, open network shares, infected websites, exploitation or via back doors left behind by the Code Red II virus. The group of people behind the Nimda virus and the theft of billions of dollars are unknown. The event greatly damaged the world’s financial sector and economy.

03 - Wave of Accidents

In the months following September 11, 2001, there was a wave of international accidents and events. On September 21, 2001, the AZF chemical factory located near Toulouse, France exploded. The event occurred when three hundred tons of ammonium nitrates ignited. The blast left a crater at the depth of 20 to 30 m (65 to 100 ft), with a diameter of 200 m (650 ft). It was a major incident in France, and 29 people were killed. The event is recognized as an environmental catastrophe, and the total damages already paid by insurance groups are exceeding 1.5 billion euros. The blast is believed to have occurred due to the improper handling of ammonium nitrate, including the mixing of chemical impurities. However, on October 2, 2001, France’s then Environment Minister, Yves Cochet, announced that the explosion “may have been a terrorist attack” and identified Hassan Jandoubi as a person of interest.

On October 4, 2001, Siberia Airlines Flight 1812 crashed over the Black Sea. The plane was en route from Tel Aviv, Israel to Novosibirsk, Russia, and all 78 people aboard were killed. The crash was initially thought to be a terrorist attack, since an Armenian plane near the scene reported seeing the Russian plane explode before it crashed into the sea. However, American intelligence reported that the crash was due to an errant S-200 surface to air missile fired as part of a Ukrainian Air Defense Forces exercise. Many people have labeled this hypothesis unlikely, considering the missiles range and safety features, claiming that the US was in fear of mass hysteria with yet another terrorist attack in the weeks following September 11. Ultimately, the government of Ukraine officially recognized their military’s fault in the accident and started negotiating compensation payments for victims’ relatives.

On November 12, 2001, the United States experienced its second deadliest aviation accident in history. It occurred when American Airlines Flight 587 crashed into a Belle Harbor neighborhood of Queens, New York. The accident took place two months after the September 11 terrorist attacks, and it caused panic in New York. Thousands of people witnessed the Airbus A300 crash to the ground, killing all 260 people on board. Many people reported a fire and explosion before the plane crashed, but the National Transportation Safety Board attributed the disaster to the first officer’s overuse of rudder controls. Al-Qaeda has listed the crash among its successes, but physical evidence was never presented indicating terrorist activity. Surprisingly, the story was widely underreported in the United States, considering the magnitude of the crash. In the months after the tragedy, rumors were circulated that suggested that the plane was exploded by a shoe bomber, similar to the failed attempt of Richard Reid, but these claims are unsubstantiated.

02 - 2001 Anthrax Attacks

Most people are familiar with the wave of anthrax attacks waged against the United States in the weeks following September, 11. Beginning on September, 18, a group of letters containing anthrax spores were mailed to US media outlets, and the offices of two US senators. In all, five people were killed in the terrorist activity, and seventeen others were seriously affected. The letters addressed to the US senators, Democrats Tom Daschle of South Dakota and Patrick Leahy of Vermont, were laced with a highly refined dry anthrax powder. Shortly after the first wave of attacks, two letters were sent to the New York Post and NBC News. The letters contained threats mentioning 9/11, and implied a new wave of terrorist activity. For this reason, it was highly reported in America that Al-Qaeda was behind the 2001 anthrax attacks.

On September 11, George W. Bush and the White House staff began taking a regimen of Cipro, which is a powerful antibiotic. This activity has led to a list of conspiracy theories accusing the US government of having pre-knowledge of the anthrax attacks. The investigation into the crimes was one of the longest and most complex in the history of law enforcement. Ultimately, investigators began to focus their attention on an American scientist named Bruce Edwards Ivins. Ivins worked at the US government’s biodefense labs at Fort Detrick in Frederick, Maryland. After extensive research, on August 6, 2008, federal prosecutors declared Bruce Edwards Ivins to be the sole culprit of the 2001 anthrax attacks. He committed suicide on July 29, 2008, after learning that he was going to be formally charged with the crimes. One would think that a media circus would have ensued, but little was mentioned about Bruce Edwards Ivins in the US press. His motives for blaming the attacks on Al-Qaeda are unknown.

01 - USA PATRIOT Act

On October 26, 2001, US President George W. Bush enacted the USA PATRIOT Act. The bill was in direct response to the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11. The goal of the Act was to reduce restrictions on law enforcement and government officials when investigating criminal activity. It gave international law organizations the right to probe and search citizen’s e-mail, medical, financial and personal records. Some of the main sections of the law enacted restrictions on foreign intelligence gathering, expanded the Secretary of the Treasury’s authority to regulate financial transactions, and broadened immigration laws in regards to detaining and deporting immigrants suspected of terrorism-related acts. The bill was passed by a wide margin in the US Congress. It was supported by some people and seen as an attack on civil liberties by others.

Entire websites have been dedicated to examining the Patriot Acts apparent lack of safeguards surrounding the rights of American citizens and foreign advocates. The bill made significant amendments to over 15 important constitutional statutes. The sections of the Patriot Act discussing Internet supervision and monitoring are confusing and extensive, ultimately reaching far beyond simple e-mail correspondence. One of the most surprising aspects of the USA PATRIOT Act is the lack of public and media debate regarding its introduction. Before September 11, provisions of the Act related to electronic surveillance were proposed and highly debated. However, many people feel that the Patriot Act has helped make America a safer place and stopped terrorist activity. In the first part of 2010, Barack Obama signed a one-year extension on several provisions in the Patriot Act.

Indeed the United States has sent troops abroad or militarily struck other countries' territory 216 times since independence from Britain. Since 1945 the United States has intervened in more than 20 countries throughout the world.

Since World War II, the United States actually dropped BOMBS ON 23 COUNTRIES. These include: China 1945-46, Korea 1950-53, China 1950-53, Guatemala 1954, Indonesia 1958, Cuba 1959-60, Guatemala 1960, Congo 1964, Peru 1965, Laos 1964-73, Vietnam 1961-73, Cambodia 1969-70, Guatemala 1967-69, Grenada 1983, Lebanon 1984, Libya 1986, El Salvador 1980s, Nicaragua 1980s, Panama 1989, Iraq 1991-1999, Sudan 1998, Afghanistan 1998, and Yugoslavia 1999.

Post World War II, the United States has also assisted in over 20 different coups throughout the world, and the CIA was responsible for half a dozen assassinations of political heads of state.

Church plans to burn the Quran on 9/11

A BOOK WHICH SAYS TO WORSHIP ONE GOD, THE GOD OF ADAM, NOAH, ABRAHAM, MOSES, JESUS AND MUHAMMAD

The Holy Quran

Even now as several churches across the United States plan to burn copies of the Quran, Islam's holy book, it is suggestive of the flare of the pride that spread throughout Italy and Europe in 1497. disease, poor harvests and social and political strife escalated fear, distrust, intolerance and religious fanaticism.

Some Christians assumed the unfolding chaos surrounding them was God's wrath and punishment for their selfish and immoral behavior. They gathered what was thought to be vain objects, like secular books, works of art, mirrors, jewelry, combs and playing cards (sometimes even people), to be burned.

A half of millennium later and as the Sept. 11, 2001 commemoration draws near, several churches are preparing to ignite bonfires to burn Qurans. Known as "International Burn A Quran Day," church leaders and members want to send a strong message to Americans and the rest of the world that Islam is a violent and oppressive religion. Along with being responsible for the attacks on Sept. 11, they also claim Islam is a religion of the Devil and is causing billions of people to go to hell. They are fearful that Islamic governments and Muslims want to take-over and dominate the world, including the United States.

It is unfortunate that such thinking negates the numerous achievements of the Quran and Islam. The Quran states, "O mankind! We created you from a single pair of a male and a female and made you into Nations and tribes, that ye may know each other, not that you may despise each other." (Surah 49:13) Not only has the Quran provided hope, meaning and guidance for billions people, but it still offers a universal message of understanding and peace. Islamic cultures have been responsible for some of the greatest advancements in medicines, astronomy, health, literature, philosophy and math.

Some Islamic civilizations also uphold enlightenment ideas. While honoring the sanctity of life and justice: "...take no life, which Allah has made sacred, except by way of justice and law," the Quran encourages goodness and forbids killing: "Slaying an innocent individual is like slaying the whole people." (Surah 6:51/5:32) Regarding rights, the Quran secured freedom of conscience and worship where at one time they did not exist. "Whoever does right, whether male or female, and is a believer,...will enter the Garden," has guaranteed women the right to property, education, and to participate in public and political life.

The Quran also prohibited the killing of daughters and specifically ensured the protection of orphans and widows. In some Islamic cultures, everyone enjoys equal protection under the law. The Prophet Muhammad, who began his message with the words, "In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful,..." established religious toleration by working with and recognizing other faiths. When he entered Mecca everyone was spared, ending cycles of revenge and retaliation that had dominated the region. Jihad, which has been distorted by the West, means an inner struggle to achieve spiritual peace and entails acts of charity.

While the churches plan to burn Qurans in remembrance of the 9-11 victims, fortunately the Council on American-Islam Relations (CAIR) will provide an educational "Share the Quran" dinner. The council believes American Muslims and people of conscience should support positive educational efforts to prevent the spread of Islamophobia. Some pastors and Christians have forcefully denounced the burning of the Qurans and are calling for a spirit of trust, understanding and religious unity. They are rejecting conspiracy theories too about Islam, that are either propagated out of ignorance or by political demagogues.

Regrettably, there are some who have always succumbed to hysteria and fanaticism, acting as if they were a divine judge and executioner. Still others have distorted the purposes and meanings of the major faiths in the world. When horrific events-like plagues or Sept. 11-are mixed with imagined fears, blame, self-interest, militancy and ethnocentric views, one's perception of God can easily be twisted into a destructive ideology. As Christians in Italy burned what they thought were vain objects, another Italian, just one of many Europeans, was enslaving and committing mass genocide against Amerindians. What was really vain?

When religious faith is intermingled with military and commercial empires, it has a way of hindering God's love and mercies and denigrating the "Other." In confronting the Roman Empire, Jesus said what comes out of the heart-murder, evil intentions, adultery, slander, fornication, theft, and false witness-is what really defiles a person. (Matthew 15:19,20.) Christians in Italy, not to mention other European imperial powers, should have readied bonfires to burn their deadly allegiances to materialism, racism and militarism, not books, artworks, combs and mirrors.

Can the same be said today? Hopefully, churches planning to burn sacred Qurans on Sept. 11 will reconsider their belief and behavior. Would it not be much better to burn the vanity of collaborating with a corporate-military and national security state trying to control the entire world and its resources? Would it not be better to set ablaze vain modernity and its technological superiority that steals human dignity, devalues others faiths and cultures, and commodifies individuals while producing economic, psychological and spiritual poverty?

These churches might want to try and distinguish between sacred and profane rights and laws, and how some Islamic republics are experimenting with toleration of mosque and state (versus a strict separation of church and state ruled by a secular military regime). At the same time, when highly valued beliefs are threatened or preemptively attacked, Islam and the Quran does justify using self-defense to protect their communities against external acts of aggression by non-Islamic populations. This important faith-principle is important to understand when collaborating with and empire and its many preemptive wars.

Perhaps the real fires needing lit are acts of charity, empathy, religious toleration and an historical awareness with regards to Islam. Has there not been enough acts of militancy, hatred, revenge and political ignorance-all of which preceded and then followed Sept. 11, and none of which mirrored Christianity or Islam, let alone the Quran or Gospels? If some churches and Christians do burn the Quran on Sept. 11, it will be a Bonfire of the Sacred instead of a Bonfire of the Vanities. It will cause more ill-will and division, not only with others, but maybe even with God.

The game allows players to shoot down minarets and muezzins with a 'Stop' button

A far-right party in Austria has sparked outrage by launching an online video game which allows players to shoot down minarets and muezzins calling for prayer.

The game, called "Moschee Baba", or "Bye Bye Mosque", gives players 60 seconds to collect points by placing a target over cartoon mosques, minarets and Muslims and click a "Stop" sign.

It is being used by the Freedom Party (FPOe), which has a link to the game on its website, to encourage voters to elect Gerhard Kurzmann, the party's candidate in the picturesque region of Styria.

"Game Over. Styria is now full of minarets and mosques!" it says at the end of a session, before inviting players to vote for Kurzmann on September 26, when local elections are being held.

The website then invites viewers to take part in a survey which asks them whether the construction of minarets and mosques should be banned in Austria, and whether Muslims should sign a declaration in which they accept that the law takes precedence over the Quran.

According to the Austria Press Agency there are no mosques with minarets in Styria, where 1.6 per cent of the population is Muslim, and only four such buildings in the entire country.

'Religious hatre beyond comparison'

Anas Schakfeh, the leader of Austria's Islamic community, has described the game as "tasteless and incomprehensible".

"This is religious hatred and xenophobia beyond comparison," he told Austrian broadcaster ORF.

Austria's Social Democrats and Green Party have joined the Islamic community in condemning the video.

"The FPOe is targeting minarets that don't even exist," Werner Kogler, the Green candidate in Styria, said.

The game also appears to have divided the FPOe camp, with its deputy, Manfred Haimbuchner, quoted as saying the party should "seek attention with substance, not with constant provocations".

However Herbert Kickl, the party secretary, defended the game saying it did not involve any real shooting, but rather "the pushing of a stop-button to halt a bad political decision."

European debate

The Islamic community and the Green party filed complaints for incitement of hatred and degrading of a religion on Wednesday, which can be punished with prison sentences of up to two years.

Prosecutors in Graz, the capital of Styria, have launched an inquiry and will decide whether to take the game off the Internet.

Islamic buildings and dress have sparked debates in many European countries recently, with French and Belgian MPs voting to outlaw the niqab, and Swiss voters backing a ban on building minarets.

Austria's Freedom Party wants a special vote on banning mosques with minarets and Islamic face veils.

Heinz-Christian Strache, its leader, has said he wants to see anti-Muslim protests similar to those in New York over the building of a Muslim cultural centre near the World Trade Center site.

The debate isn’t just coming from the right. In Germany central banker Thilo Sarrazin, a Social Democrat, has provoked uproar for saying that Muslim immigrants undermine German society, refuse to assimilate, and sponge off the state. He has also said “all Jews share a particular gene” angering people across the German community.

The Freedom Party said its “Bye bye Mosque” game was in part in reaction to Sarrazin’s comments saying they would prefer to have “Sarrazin rather than muezzin,” in Austria. Freedom wants to “deal with a situation which has already long been widespread in Europe,” Kurzmann said. He said young people needed to be informed about the problem.

With its catchy slogans and youthful leader, the Freedom Party enjoys strong support from young people in Austria, polling 17.5 percent of the vote at a national level in 2008.

Zach Evans, from the U.K., spotted the outline in satellite pictures of a field on farmland in Hungary.

He told the Sun: "I'm not a religious person looking for images of Mary or Jesus in everything, but this is obvious."

We're a little more concerned that Zach was scanning the farmlands of Hungary for his vacation. Nice this time of year?

Why Somalia's Fishermen Became Pirates

Ever since a civil war brought down Somalia's last functional government in 1991, the country's 3,330 km (2,000 miles) of coastline - the longest in continental Africa - has been pillaged by foreign vessels. A United Nations report in 2006 said that, in the absence of the country's at one time serviceable coastguard, Somali waters have become the site of an international "free for all," with fishing fleets from around the world illegally plundering Somali stocks and freezing out the country's own rudimentarily-equipped fishermen. According to another U.N. report, an estimated $300 million worth of seafood is stolen from the country's coastline each year. "In any context," says Gustavo Carvalho, a London-based researcher with Global Witness, an environmental NGO, "that is a staggering sum."

In the face of this, impoverished Somalis living by the sea have been forced over the years to defend their own fishing expeditions out of ports such as Eyl, Kismayo and Harardhere - all now considered to be pirate dens. Somali fishermen, whose industry was always small-scale, lacked the advanced boats and technologies of their interloping competitors, and also complained of being shot at by foreign fishermen with water cannons and firearms. "The first pirate gangs emerged in the '90s to protect against foreign trawlers," says Peter Lehr, lecturer in terrorism studies at Scotland's University of St. Andrews and editor of Violence at Sea: Piracy in the Age of Global Terrorism. The names of existing pirate fleets, such as the National Volunteer Coastguard of Somalia or Somali Marines, are testament to the pirates' initial motivations.

The waters they sought to protect, says Lehr, were "an El Dorado for fishing fleets of many nations." A 2006 study published in the journal Science predicted that the current rate of commercial fishing would virtually empty the world's oceanic stocks by 2050. Yet, Somalia's seas still offer a particularly fertile patch for tuna, sardines and mackerel, and other lucrative species of seafood, including lobsters and sharks. In other parts of the Indian Ocean region, such as the Persian Gulf, fishermen resort to dynamite and other extreme measures to pull in the kinds of catches that are still in abundance off the Horn of Africa.

High-seas trawlers from countries as far flung as South Korea, Japan and Spain have operated down the Somali coast, often illegally and without licenses, for the better part of two decades, the U.N. says. They often fly flags of convenience from sea-faring friendly nations like Belize and Bahrain, which further helps the ships skirt international regulations and evade censure from their home countries. Tsuma Charo of the Nairobi-based East African Seafarers Assistance Programme, which monitors Somali pirate attacks and liaises with the hostage takers and the captured crews, says "illegal trawling has fed the piracy problem." In the early days of Somali piracy, those who seized trawlers without licenses could count on a quick ransom payment, since the boat owners and companies backing those vessels didn't want to draw attention to their violation of international maritime law. This, Charo reckons, allowed the pirates to build up their tactical networks and whetted their appetite for bigger spoils.

Beyond illegal fishing, foreign ships have also long been accused by local fishermen of dumping toxic and nuclear waste off Somalia's shores. A 2005 United Nations Environmental Program report cited uranium radioactive and other hazardous deposits leading to a rash of respiratory ailments and skin diseases breaking out in villages along the Somali coast. According to the U.N., at the time of the report, it cost $2.50 per ton for a European company to dump these types of materials off the Horn of Africa, as opposed to $250 per ton to dispose of them cleanly in Europe.

Monitoring and combating any of these misdeeds is next to impossible - Somalia's current government can barely find its feet in the wake of the 2006 U.S.-backed Ethiopian invasion. And many Somalis, along with outside observers, suspect local officials in Mogadishu and in ports in semi-autonomous Puntland further north of accepting bribes from foreign fishermen as well as from pirate elders. U.N. monitors in 2005 and 2006 suggested an embargo on fish taken from Somali waters, but their proposals were shot down by members of the Security Council.

In the meantime, Somali piracy has metastasized into the country's only boom industry. Most of the pirates, observers say, are not former fishermen, but just poor folk seeking their fortune. Right now, they hold 18 cargo ships and some 300 sailors hostage - the work of a sophisticated and well-funded operation. A few pirates have offered testimony to the international press - a headline in Thursday's Times of London read, "They stole our lobsters: A Somali pirate tells his side of the story" - but Lehr and other Somali experts express their doubts. "Nowadays," Lehr says, "this sort of thing is just a cheap excuse." The legacy of nearly twenty years of inaction and abuse, though, is far more costly.

A 15-year-old French Muslim girl has beaten the ban on Islamic headscarves in schools by shaving her head.

France decided to ban all religious symbols in state schools, including large Christian crucifxes, Sikh turbans and Jewish skullcaps.

As the law was introduced in September, schools were told not to automatically exclude pupils who arrived wearing headscarves, but to try and avert a showdown through dialogue.

Cennet Doganay, whose family is of Turkish origin, had only been allowed into the study room at her school in Strasbourg since early September, as they negotiated her return to class without a headscarf.

With her newly-shaven look, she was allowed into school on Friday.

She told journalists waiting outside: "I respect the law but the law doesn't respect me."

Her mother said Cennet had tried everything "a beret, a bandana - but they still refused to let her into class".

"She has been traumatised since the start of term. But all she wanted to do was go to school like everyone else," she told French news agency AFP.

Reports say about 120 schoolgirls across France insisted on keeping their headscarves at the start of term, but most have since given in under threat of expulsion.

A woman of Courage from Sri Lanka, Jensila Majeed

A Muslim woman who has been under tremendous pressure in the battle fields and who was driven out by the Tamil Rebels in 1990 from northern Mullaittivu to Puttalam, this lady had the courage to take up the challenge and serve the community under many difficulties with her husband and with her three children, her struggle began in 1992.

Ms. Majeed has become an energetic activist for services for displaced Muslim and Tamil civilians, focusing particularly on grassroots programs on life skills, health, and women's empowerment. Her activism began in 1992 with a working group of five people. She overcame both the general neglect of the problem of IDPs in the Muslim minority as well as her own community’s parameters for women activists to build a broad-based organization that effectively works on minority and women’s issues in a highly sensitive and politicized environment.

The annual International Women of Courage Award was started in March 2007 to recognize women around the globe who have shown exceptional courage and leadership in advocating for women's rights and advancement. This is the only award within the Department of State that pays tribute to outstanding women leaders worldwide. It recognizes the courage and leadership shown as they struggle for social justice and human rights.

BBC Report says || “A Sri Lankan Muslim woman who has been internally displaced in the north of the country for 20 years has won a top award from the US state department.

Majeed Jensila is one of 10 worldwide recipients of the state department's International Women of Courage award for 2010.

She heads a group called the Community Trust Fund, engaged in "activities for the betterment of minority women".

The state department said her focus was on uniting Muslims and Tamils.

The US Embassy in Colombo said that Ms Jensila had worked with young people on minority women's issues including women's rights, peace building, relief work and mine risk education.

Ms Jensila, from Mullaitthivu in Sri Lanka's northern province, told the BBC Tamil service that she had been displaced when Tamil Tiger rebels evicted the entire Muslim community from the area in 1990.

She and others sought refuge in Puttalam, a small fishing town on the north-western coast, where she lives now with her husband and three children.

She started the Community Trust Fund with five people in 1992.

"At the start the task was very difficult," she said.

But she was able to overcome the obstacles with support from her husband and family.

The annual International Women of Courage award was started in March 2007 to recognise women around the globe who have shown courage and leadership in advocating women's rights.

Two women from Afghanistan also won awards this year.”

Who are the TALIBANS?

Talibans of Afghanistan are making the world headlines since 1994, but most people have little knowledge who they are and what are they really far? Some paint them as demons and some praise them as the true representatives of the true Islam in the 21st Century. Writer of this article along with a team of professionals has been working in Afghanistan since last two years on different relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction projects, and thus coming in close contacts with the people and also with the high ups in the Government, including the Ameer-ul-Momineen, Prime Ministers, Ministers and heads of departments. Also he had to deal with their civil bureaucracy in connection with getting approvals for the projects. Thus he can claim first hand knowledge about the working of the Taliban Government, and is quite qualified to shed light on the above questions to help the readers in knowing the reality.

WHO ARE THE TALIBANS?

In Persian language the world "TALIB" means "Seeker" which in its common meaning in used for every "students". Taliban is the plural of the word Talib. A Talib after about ten years successful stay in school can appear in the Mullah examination, which is the intermediate level of education. But one still needs another four years to qualify as Moulvi, who is eligible to work as an Islamic Teacher. It is interesting to know that Ameer-ul-Momineen, Muhammad Omar's surname Mullah indicates that he has yet to complete his education to earn the title of 'Moulvi'.

HISTORY OF TALIBANS

History of Talibans in Afghanistan is as old as the history of Islam in that country, which reached there in the year 635AD, when soldiers of Islam, a good proportion of whom were the companions of the Prophet (May peace be upon him) occupied Kabul after ferocious battle with the Indian Hindu Raja of Kushan family. It is worth noting that Afghanistan and present day's Pakistan have been one country for more than 2000 years. They departed only after the British occupation of India. Afghanis proudly tell you that their country is blessed with many shrines of the companions of the Messenger of Allah (May Allah be pleased with them). I have been to some of these Shrines which are visited daily by hundreds of the devotees. We have also visited the common grave of forty martyrs. As the story goes, they were treacherously killed by a neighboring Hindu Raja in a feast arranged to sign submission agreement. Muslim rule was fully established by the year 650AD and majority of the Afghans accepted Islam as their religion. They were so keen to learn the details of their new faith that they called themselves "Talibans" seekers of the knowledge of Islam. Every city tried to surpass in establishing Colleges/Universities to graduate scholars/teachers and preachers. Thus Taliban has been enjoying great respect in the society always. Normally they engaged themselves in religious studies and works of reformations in the society. But through out Afghan history when ever there was call of duty for Jihad, they left their colleges for fighting with the infidels. For example, major portion of the army of great conqueror Mahmood Ghaznavi is said to consist of Talibans during his conquest of India.

TALIBAN MOVEMENT

As said earlier, throughout the history of Afghanistan, Taliban's role has been only supportive for Jihad. As soon as the objectives of Jihad were achieved they would go back to their schools. The same happened in their Jihad against the Russian Communists. In 1989, when Russians left their country, Talibans as per their tradition went back to their schools, mosques on learning or teaching jobs. In the confusion that followed, country was occupied by hundreds of warlords without any central command. The chiefs such as Ahmed Shah Masood, Hikamat Yar, Rashid Dostum had very little control on their men, who behaved autonomously in their areas of control. Each of the big cities like Kabul and Kandhar had more than one rulers, all fighting with each other, collecting their own taxes from citizens, looting, beating and killing there opponents indiscriminately.

In 1993, Kandhar had four warlords who had divided the city into their area of control. If a citizen wanted to travel from one area to the other, he had to pay toll tax at each ones boundary. One of the road barrier was by the side of the mosque where Mullah Muhammad Omar was an apprentice teacher. He was a veteran Mujahid who in the Jihad days was given the nickname of Mullah Rackety, because he was very good in firing rockets. I have been told by various senior persons that Omar was a silent and a very serious soldier, who cared little for his life. Once he was seriously wounded by enemy fire, with multi injuries, the serious most being that he lost one of his eyes which is permanently closed now. Moulvi Saeed ur Rehman Haqqani told me that Mullah Omar remained unconscious for many days in a Quetta hospital. But as soon as he could walk, he went back to Jihad.

Mullah Omar was perturbed deeply about the happenings in the city of Kandhar and openly spoke against them, which put him on the hit list of the warlords of the area. One day it so happened that a family was stopped at the check post, while the husband and the children were kept waiting in the open, the bandits took away the wife; she was gang raped and the poor woman died in this horrible process. To tease Mullah Omar, they threw her body in his mosque. This outraged him but his companion prevailed upon him not to react, fearing that the enemies will kill him. However, a similar happening took place again. This time, the victim was a fourteen years young boy. Now Mullah Omar could not be controlled by any body. He said to his friends and students, "Whether you come with we are not, I will fight against this cruelty till my death". With a stick in hand, he ran to the check post alone but soon he was followed by forty two of his students and co-teachers. It was 5'Oclock in the morning. After a little resistance they occupied the post, and snatched their weapons. Now equipped with Kalashankofs, Mullah Omar and his companions rushed to the next post, and thus one by one they took over six of them till people came to know at sunrise what had taken place early dawn on that day. They started rallying behind him, and by that evening, warlords had vacated the city leaving huge quantities of weapons behind. Entire city had come under the control of Taliban by next morning. But they did not rest. Mulla Omar appointed one of the Talib as Governor of city with the instructions to enforce Islamic rule there. The word had spread in the neighboring localities also and they came in large numbers to join the Talibans and free other towns from the occupation of the bandits. As they took over the control of any city, Mulla Omar went on establishing Taliban rule under the Islamic law, on the pattern of the Khilafat-ur-Rashida i.e. the Govt. established by the Caliphs after the departure of the Messenger of Allah, (May peace be upon him).

As the Taliban movement picked up warlords began to unite also; and took refuge in Kabul under their chiefs like Ahmed Shah Masood, Gulbadin Hikamat Yar; Rashid Dostam and Ismael. When Taliban reached Kabul, to their surprise, it was a no man land with Masood, Hikamat Yar and Dostam pitched on the surrounding hills, firing missiles on their own city mercilessly from three sides. City population welcome and joined Taliban, to win their freedom from the warlords, and after some resistance succeeded to push them out but the city had already turned into rubbles, with tens of thousands of innocent people dead at the hands of their ex-Mujahideen. Warlords had not only destroyed the city with rocket attacks, but they also looted it most mercilessly. They even ripped apart windows, doors, and flooring of schools, stole laboratory equipment, tables, and chairs. Nothing indeed escaped from their hands. They removed anything, they could from the 124 industrial units in Kabul alone. If machine were too heavy to carry, they broke them into parts and took them away. I was extremely sorry to see large transformers bodies cut into pieces to remove copper of the winding. One of the commander had the Asphalt covering of the road removed to sell it in the neighboring Pakistan. We saw similar cruelties and loot all over the country, in Hirat, Mazarsharif, Jalalabad and Kandhar, and every where.

CHALLENGE FOR TALIBAN

This was the Afghanistan, what Taliban had to put together, rehabilitate and reconstruct. Its people were horrified, dismayed, divided, hungry and poor; suffering from depression and psycho illness of various types due to 15 years of horrow. Women and children had been the worse sufferer, most insecure and deprived.

APPOINTMENT OF AMEER-UL-MOMINEEN

After Kabul fell to Taliban they decided to establish their Government. Their guidelines was Islam and only Islam. Therefore it was natural for them to establish the Khilaft system of Govt. on the model of the pious companion of the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him). In this Govt. constitution is "The Quran book of Allah"; and "The Sharia" the explanation of the Quran as delivered by the Prophet, peace be upon him. So Taliban had a ready-made constitution.

As far the system of the Government, an Islamic State is based upon Shoora i.e. Mutual Consultation of a body of people, selection criteria for whose members is also prescribed in Islam, which is piety, knowledge and physical fitness of the person. Thus Taliban called a grand assembly of 3500 Ulma i.e. recognized practicing scholars of Islam from all regions of Afghanistan, many of whom were their teachers. Their task was to select their Ameer i.e. ruler could to run the Islamic Govt. in Afghanistan. Muhammad Omar was excluded from this grand assembly of the learned ones as he was only a Mullah. After three days deliberations the assembly decided that Mullah Omar was the best among them to lead the Islamic Emirate and to achieve its objective due to his leadership qualities, boldness, wisdom and par excellent contribution to Jihad against infidels. Moulvi Saeed-ur-Rehman Haqqani told me that Mulla Omar was called in the final session to listen to the judgement of the leaned ones. As they announced his Emirate, he wept bitterly and begged them to spare him of this great responsibility; while pleading that there were many among them who in his opinion were formore suitable for this great job. But the grand assembly of learned it ones unanimously asked him to accept the responsibility. Thus Mullah Omar was established as the Ameer-ul-Momineen, with the title "Almujahid" - but even this honor does not make him Moulvi, untill and unlessl he appears in examination and qualifies it, till then he will remain a Mullah only.

MISGIVING AND MISUNDERSTANDING

Appearance of Taliban on the political scene of Afghanistan was a surprise for every one in Pakistan as in the rest of the world. If you go through the newspapers of 1994-1995, you will see many types of whims and stories about the Taliban. It was commonly believed that Americans had brought them to power, some called them the force of Naseer Ullah Babar, who was Interior Minister of BeNazir Government in those days. Some said, "They are American stooges nourished by Naseer Ullah Babar", some credited Pakistan's I.S.I and some went so far to say that it was Russian inspired revolution. But none of these theories was right. As you have seen, it was an indigenous people's revolution led by the students of Islam against the oppressive rule of the warlords. It was the fruit of the blood of two million myrtars of Islam who came from all corners of the world to fight and sacrifice their lives for the glory of Islam. Thus Taliban and their leader Mullah Muhammad Omar are not ordinary people in power but upholders of a movement - the movement of reconnaissance of Islam in the world. Simple proof of this is that all anti Islamic forces are united in opposition to them. In the Holy Quran Allah has told us "All Kufr (wrong) will unite against the Haque, the truth of Islam". Today world is witness of this truth.

According to the study, based on data from 232 countries and territories, Asia is home to nearly 20 percent of the global Muslim population.

Nearly one in four people worldwide is Muslim — and they are not necessarily where you might think, according to an extensive new study that aims to map the global Muslim population.

India, a majority-Hindu country, has more Muslims than any country except for Indonesia and Pakistan, and more than twice as many as Egypt.

China has more Muslims than Syria.

Germany has more Muslims than Lebanon.

And Russia has more Muslims than Jordan and Libya put together.

Nearly two out of three of the world’s Muslims are in Asia, stretching from Turkey to Indonesia.

The Middle East and north Africa, which together are home to about one in five of the world’s Muslims, trail a very distant second.

There are about 1.57 billion Muslims in the world, according to the report, “Mapping the Global Muslim Population,” by THE PEW FORUM on Religion & Public Life. That represents about 23 percent of the total global population of 6.8 billion.

CNN Report says: Nearly one in four people worldwide is Muslim -- and they are not necessarily where you might think, according to an extensive new study that aims to map the global Muslim population. CNN Story page says Islam winning converts in Western world The second-largest religion in the world after Christianity, Islam is also the fastest-growing religion. In the United States, for example, nearly 80 percent of the more than 1,200 mosques have been built in the past 12 years

TIMES ONLINE Says : Muslim population 'rising 10 times faster than rest of society' further it goes to says 'The Muslim population in Britain has grown by more than 500,000 to 2.4 million in just four years, according to official research collated for The Times.The population multiplied 10 times faster than the rest of society, the research by the Office for National Statistics reveals. In the same period the number of Christians in the country fell by more than 2 million.'

Indonesia is the world’s most populated Muslim country with 203 million Muslims, about 13 percent of the world’s Muslim population.

Pakistan has 174 million Muslims, India 161 million, Bangladesh 145 million, Iran 74 million and Turkey 74 million, according to the study.

“Together these six countries are home to about 85% of Asia's Muslim population and more than half (53%) of the global Muslim population.”

Nearly half of Asia’s Muslims are concentrated in South Asia.

“The remainder are somewhat equally divided between Southeast-East Asia (26%) and Central-Western Asia (24%),” says the study.

It found that the Middle East and North Africa have 315 million Muslims, about 20 percent of the world’s Muslims.

“The Middle East-North Africa region has the highest percentage of Muslim-majority countries.”

The study also finds that there are 240 million Muslims in sub-Saharan Africa, making up about 15 percent of the global Muslim population.

One-third of them live in Nigeria, which has about 74 million Muslims, about half of its population.

The region is home to countries with very large Muslim majorities, including Mauritania (99%), Niger (99%), Somalia (99%), Mayotte (98%), Comoros (98%), Djibouti (97%), Senegal (96%), Gambia (95%), Mali (93%), Guinea (84%) and Sierra Leone (71%).

Muslim Minorities

Europe has 38 million Muslims, making up five percent of the continent’s population.

The study, described as the first-ever of its kind, indicates that one-fifth of Muslims (300 million) live in non-Muslim countries.

“There minority Muslim populations are often quite large.”

Hindu-majority India has the third-largest Muslim population after Indonesia and Pakistan.

“China has more Muslims than Syria, while Russia is home to more Muslims than Jordan and Libya combined.”

The study notes that China’s 22 million Muslims are distributed in every Chinese province, with the highest concentration in the western provinces, primarily Xinjiang, Ningxia and Gansu.

“Xinjiang is the only Muslim-majority province of China, with Muslims accounting for approximately 53% of the total population.”

The study finds that Europe has 38 million Muslims, making up five percent of the continent’s population, mostly concentrated in eastern and central Europe.

Russia has more than 16 million Muslims, the largest Muslim population in Europe.

According to the study, Germany has the biggest Muslim minority in western Europe, with more than four million population.

It put the number of Muslims in France, which was previously known to have the continent’s biggest Muslim minority, at 3.5 million.

Britain has fewer than two million Muslims, nearly 3 percent of the total population, while Italy has 36,000 Muslim populations, the smallest in Europe.

The study says there are nearly 4.6 million Muslims in the Americas, with nearly 2.5 million Muslims in the US and 700,000 in Canada.

It notes that Muslims make up 16 percent of Suriname’s population, the largest Muslim population in the Americas.

Argentina has a Muslim minority of 800,000, the largest in South America.

The figures presented by the study about Muslim populations in the West, particularly in Europe and the US, contradict the estimates usually reported by Muslim organizations in these regions.

Muslims in the US, for example, are commonly believed to number more than 7 million while France is believed to be home to more than six million Muslims.

THE PEN AND THE SWORD

So far 'Satanic' Salman has succeeded in causing the death of 40 Muslim men, widowed Muslim women and orphaned Muslim children with his poisoned pen, proving the old saying (if proof was needed) that "The Pen is Mightier than the Sword!"

Despite all my anger, sorrow and bitterness i still plead with my fellow Muslims in travail - "Stop crying", "Don't wail!", "No more protest marches or book burning!" All our visible signs of pain and anguish are giving the enemies of Islam gleeful sadistic pleasures. I say, STOP IT! Turn the Tables!

TURNING THE TABLES

Let us learn a lesson from the life of Jesus Christ (peace be upon him). His detractors came to him again and again with posers - and riddles as recorded in the Christian New Testament. His own people, the Jews, came to him, whit mockery on their lips and mischief in their hearts, saying "Master, we caught this women in the act of adultery, what must we do to her?"1 Jesus turned the tables on the Jews. Again, on another occasion, they said, "Master, must we pay tribute (taxes) to Caesar or not? Once more again Jesus turned the tables on the Jews in the temple of Solomon on his triumphant march into Jerusalem with his disciples, he physically overturned the money-changers´ tables and, with a corded whip, whipped them out of the Temple2. We shamefully acknowledge that we lack the potency to whip anybody, but every Muslim who reads these words and understands what he is reading can turn the tables on every Westerner who defends Rushdie.

UNEXPURGATED RUSHDIE

There is no way of cleaning the stable without dirtying your hands. I have seen numerous TV programmes debating Rushdie´s "Satanic Verses." But not one, I repeat again NOT ONE, Muslim defender of our Cause grappled with the nettle. One who came nearest was one of our intellectuals who, when prodded as to what in Rushdie´s book created such terrible umbrage in the Muslim minds, in Rushdie´s work, timidly quoted the word "bhaenchud" Satanic Salman´s "The Satanic Verses."

What did this word "bhaenchud mean to some 50 million American viewers on ABC or was it PBS TV network? Absolutely NOTHING!

"Bhaenchud" is only for starters. You have been warned. This publication , the word "UNEXPURGATED" , which means that Rushdie´s text in his original "The Satanic Verses" are not tampered with. That nothing is done by me to remove, expunge, erase any obscene or pornographic word or phrase. If you can´t stomach Rushdie´s "shit"3 in print, please tear up this publication and throw it in your toilet pan. In all my lectures on Rushdie, I had warned my audiences in advance that my talks were "Definitely not for Prudes, children and Bashful Men and Women"!

From now on, you can look forward to sharing the "gems" (the shit which Rushdie has excreted) whit your Western friends and neighbours. Create opportunities to expound "The Satanic Verses".

A NOVEL APPROACH

Begin like this - "Admitted that Rushdie has many filthy, dirty and obscene things to say about Islam and its heroes and heroines: but sir, do you know what he has to say about you, his benefactors and protectors, what thanks he gives you for his upbringing, cultural and moral deportment, and unsolicited refuge and hospitality?"

On the very first4 page of "The Satanic Verses", Rushdie calls his god-fathers the British- "PROPER LONDON, BHAI!5 HERE WE COME! THOSE BASTARDS DOWN THERE WON'T KNOW WHAT HIT THEM."

Bastards! He could have said those sons of bitches. But wait, let Rushdie get warmed up.

The first time i ever uttered the word "bastard" was in the early sixties at a public meeting in the City Hall of Durban, at question time, I happened to quote a verse from the Holy Bible to illustrate a point; I had read:

"The bastard shall not enter the conregation of the Lord; even unto the tenth generation...?" Deuteronomy 23:2

This one word - bastard, nearly brought the roof down on me! How could Deedat utter such a word? Remember, I was only quoting! My audience did not know that this Anglo-Saxon unsavoury word bastard was repeated in the "Book of Books" only three times, in nearly 1,500 pages. Rushdie does it 29 times in his bid to beat all records for all times in his tome of 500, double-spaced, sparasely typed pages. Observe this evil genius constructing a one-word sentence out of it.

"THAT, AND ALSO HER, THE ICEWOMAN, BASTARD. (note: this b-a-s-t-a-r-d is a sentence by itself) NOW THAT I AM DEAD I HAVE FORGOTTEN HOW TO FORGIVE. " Page 8 of the Devil's "The Satanic Verses" (in short TVS in all future references.).

This Devil incarnate has learnt from his British peers the art of staccato sentences. Now watch him do the impossible whit words. He can introduce THREE "bastards" in a single short sentence..."THAT BASTARDS, THOSE BASTARDS, THEIR LACK OF BASTARDS6 TASTE" (PAGE 137 TSV).

WHAT A PRIZE!

Could Viking/Penguin, the publishers of this filth, have given Rushdie eight hundred thousand dollars ($800,000) as advance money for this? Not likely! They have good (?) business sense. They smelt their "PIECE OF PIG EXCREMENT" (Rushdie's words: page 7 TVS), "ROTTEN COCKROACH DUNG" (page 13 TVS). Not smelly enough? Rushdie excretes his shit quite late in his book; in his own words - "THE SHIT STARTS" (page 434 TVS). Please check up! "THIS SHIT, YOU CUNTS," "IT'S SHIT," "IT'S FUCKING SHIT," "SHIT DINNER," Four "shits" on one page alone (p441 TVS), page 449 "THREW SHIT." Page 461 "WHIT MAN'S SHIT," there must be something special in it for this Brown Britisher, because he says, "BLACK SHIT IS BAD," on page 529 of his bullshit book TVS, and also on page 461 "NIGGER EAT WHITE MAN'S WHIT," and he shuns his reasons, as to why!

PROLOGUE

SELECTIVE SENSITIVITY

Everyone in the West, British and American, giants of the literary world, are not impervious to sacrilege, insults and profanities as contained in "The Satanic Verses". Roald Dahl, a British author and member of the Literaray Guild had some pertinent remarks as reproduced from "The Daily News" dated March 1 st, 1989 (see next page). Cynical supporters of Rushdie's rights of freedom of speech and expression might say that for Dahl it was a question of "sour grapes", not having been nominated for the short-list of the prestigious "Book Award" himself.

CHRISTIAN AND JEW UNITE

What would they say of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Robert Rucie, who has said in the first official statement by the Church of England "ONLY THE UTTERLY INSENSITIVE CAN FAIL TO SEE THAT THE PUBLICATION OF SALMAN RUSHDIE'S BOOK HAS DEEPLY OFFENDED MUSLIMS BOTH HERE AND THROUGHOUT THE WORLD." The Anglican Primate continued: "I UNDERSTAND THEIR FEELINGS AND I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT OFFENCE TO RELIGIOUS BELIEFS OF THE FOLLOWERS OF ISLAM OR ANY OTHER FAITH IS QUITE AS WRONG AN OFFENCE AS TO THE RELIGIOUS BELIEFS OF CHRISTIANS."

And what have the dullards on the Rushdie bandwagon to say of the Chief Rabbi of Britain, Lord Jakobovits, who has the first religious leader in Britain to "DEPRECATE....THE OFFENCE CAUSED" by the book, has reiterated his view that it "SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED." In a letter to The Times (4th March 1989) the Chief Rabbi also agreed on the need for "PROHIBITING THE PUBLICATION OF ANYTHING LIKELY TO INFLAME, THROUGH OBSCENE DEFAMATION..." What motives can we attribute to the three above? Nothing other than the Love of God and Love of Man based on Eternal Thrust. The Holy Qur'an describes these godly men as "And among them (the Jews and Christians) are Mu'mins, (meaning Faithful, Sincere People)..." Holy Qur'an 3:110

But lest we are deluded into complacency, the All-Wise Merciful God reminds us in the concluding phrase of the above verse "But the majority of them are perverted transgressors."

How amply are the words proven true, again and again! Are these atheistic and materialistic so-called Jews and Christians beyond redemption? No! We are never to despair! There is still much good in them. Learn to talk to them rationally, not emotionally. Give them living examples from their day-to-day affairs.

MPs ANGERED

Datelined from London, on the 22nd May, 1989, was a roaring headline in "The Daily News."

I sympathise with the British in their righteous indignation. Though the English-speaking people, both British and American, bandy around not only four-letter words, but five- and seven-letter profane words in their normal cultural and social relationships. Yet they are highly sensitive when the same words are used in connection with their own heroes and heroines.

DOUBLE STANDARDS

What grates me most is the rank hypocisy of the one thousand and one Poets, Playwrights and Pimps; Editors, Essayists and Eunuchs; Novelists, Newspaperman and Non-Conformists who signed and paid for adverts in the National Newspapers in support of Rushdie's right to absolute freedom of speech and expression.

Yet not a single one of those thousand will raise an eyebrown in defending Rourke's right to use just a four-letter word even once. Not against Mrs. Thatcher in person but against her economic Policies. Their hypocrisy is unbearable!

What was that "four-letter" word wich roused such fury and ire among a people reputed for their calm, placid, sagacity? It is downright silly to beat around the bush. That emotive word is F-U-C-K! Because of this single four-letter word, Lady Chatterley-s Lover was banned in South Africa for twenty years! Even the dullest of the English-speaking people conjure up the word "fuck", when the expression "four-letter" is used.

A TETRAGRAMATTON

The Jehovah's Witnesses, a very active and most militant evangelistic Christian sect, never use the expression "four-letter word" in any of their literature though a four-letter word is the kingpin of their preaching.7 They have invented a fourteen-letter word to describe a four-letter word. Imagine! They ever and anon substitute "TETRAGRAMATTON" instead of simply the word "four".

Rushdie has overcome this typical British aversion by making a "four-letter" word into a seven-letter word by simply adding the present participle suffix to the word FUCK by adding I-N-G, making it FUCKING. See how adoritly he made the whole British nation swallow the word FUCKING while Rourke's "FUCK" was gettting stuck in their throats.

"OH. SHE'S (Maggie) RADICAL ALL RIGHT. WHAT SHE (Maggie) WANTS - WHAT SHE (Maggie) ACTUALLY THINKS SHE (Maggie) CAN FUCKING ACHIEVE IS LITERALLY...FROM FUCKING SURREY AND HAMPSHIRE...NOBODY'S EVER TRIED TO REPLACE A WHOLE FUCKING CLASS BEFORE...THIS COUNTRY THAT'S STUFFED FULL OF FUCKING OLD CORPSES. It is strange that the British can stomach four "fuckings" in one paragraph from Rushdie but one "fuck" from Rourke infuriates them. Is it because Rushdie is there brother-in-law and son-in-law combined? (Remember! His divorce first whife was British.) A cursory count will give you 5 FUCKS and 52 FUCKINGS in this what the Western world has called a literary masterpiece! Don't forget, only 52, just one "FUCKING" for every week of the year!

Dear reader, if any pervert, dolt or dullard protests that the foregoing quotations are out of context, then obtain the text (Satanic Salman's Satanic Verses). If you already have it then please buy three highlighters - red, yellow and green, and go to town in colour-coding Rushdie's shit. RED for all the "fuck" and "fucking" words. YELLOW for all the Hindi exotic words, like "bhaenchud", "yaar", "haramazada", etc. And GREEN for quotable verses: I'll refer you to them later.

Thus armed with a colour-coded "The Satanic Verses", you can plaster the cynics and mockers of Muslims With Rushdie's excrement. They ought to relish it, never mind how much they protest. It's food for the maggots! Like randy hooker Pamella Borders; Mother India also gave birth to Salman Rushdie, alias Satanic Salman, also "Saladin Chamcha" or "Spoono" and "Gibreel Farishta" all are one and the same - Rushdie of "Satanic Verses" fame. Nurtured in the Western culture, both Pamella and Salman spurned their faiths. At the tender age of thirteen, Rushdie was thrown into the laps of the West. He studied at Rugby and Cambridge in England and imbibed its culture. He went the whole hog. Listen to his philosophy, page 211 TVS ie "The Satanic Verses". He wrote -

"BUT TO BE RAISED IN THE HOUSE OF POWER IS TO LEARN ITS WAYS, TO SOAK THEM UP, THROUGH THAT VERY SKIN THAT IS THE CAUSE OF YOUR OPPRESSION. IF THE POWERFUL TRAMPLE OVER YOU, YOU ARE INFECTED BY THE SOLES OF THEIR FEET." TVS p 211

It is worth highlighting the above quotation in GREEN. Rushdie is giving here the source of his own inspiration and nourishment. He has imbibed the worst of both worlds! Now see, how he repays his British god-fathers for all their kind and generous hospitality.

He charges his British benefactors as an incestuous people. He calls them "THE SISTER FUCKING BRITISH."8 TVS p 80. This is the unkindliest cut of them all. He marries Pamela Lovelace according to his story in the TVS. And according to his own philosophy she was destined "FOR FUCKING AND THROWING OVER,"9 which he did by divorcing her.

Where did he get the information from that the British fuck their own sisters? Perhaps his Pamela may have confided in him, and maybe he betrayed her trust.

THE IRON LADY

My wife has a special liking for Mrs. Thatcher. She cannot explain. She does not understand her politics. Perhaps it is the clarity of her voice and forceful speeches that attract her to the "Iron lady."

Islam forbids the giving of offensive nick-names to anybody. I take it that "Iron Lady" is not offensive. If it is, my apologies. I owe Mrs. Thatcher nothing. But my wife and I were offended on learning that beside disparaging her successful economic policies with obscenities (refer page 10 herof), now he makes his character to say "I'M TALKING ABOUT YOU-KNOW-WHO," VALANCE EXPLAINED HELPFULLY. Mickey Rourke (p 8) used only a four-letter word for Mrs Thatcher's POLICIES and Britain was incensed, but when Rushdie applies a five-letter title (B-I-T-C-H), it becomes Kosher10. Halaal, Permissible! Strange. Oh British, how did Rushdie bewitch you with b-i-t-c-h?

IS "TVS" A NOVEL?

Rushdie claims that his TSV is only a novel, it is a dream within a dream. Don't you remember that every movie before its screening, at one time, displayed a notice, to wit "All characters in this film are fictitious and the similarity of any name to persons living or dead are merely coincidental." Tell that to Mark Thatcher or Carol Thatcher, Mrs Thatcher's son and daughter, and see what they do to you! Nobody will blame them for any grievous bodily harm. Try! Try!

In the house of Islam, anyone traducing the fair name of any lady, living or dead, will be required to produce four "EYEWITNESSES" to the alleged indiscretion to qualify as a "bitch", and if under cross-examination one of them fails, all four witnesses will receive 80 lashes each. Cruel! Barbaric! you say. You would not say that if your mother's integrity was involved, I bet! If Rushdie himself was an eyewitness to his wife's adultery, he may divorce her on that ground but he would not be allowed to have her arrayed before an Islamic Court without three other impeccable eyewitnesses to corroborate his charge, failing which he too will receive eighty lashes.

NEW MEANING

The Western world has developed an art of glamorising filth and sin. IMMORALITY is now termed "new morality!" A BASTARD is now called a "love-child!" and a BITCH, which normally meant a female dog, when applied to a woman it implied that she was like the bitch in season (rut) - given up to unhibited sexual abandon, free to all comers. This word is derogatory no more if you apply a superlative to it, ie simply add the adjective "super" and make it "SUPERBITCH".

SUPER BITCH

It is defamatory and libellous to call a woman a bitch, but not if you call her a "Super Bitch".

My country South Africa is an industrial giant. It produces 50% of the total electricity of the African continent. 60% of Africa's total industrial output. THE QUEEN NOT SPARED

I was born British. I still cherish a British passport over 60 years old. I don't know what's its worth. English has become my mother tongue. I dream in English and I also swear in English. I have visited Britain a dozen times. More than once I was tempted to visit the Speakers' Corner, Hyde Park, London, enjoying the many passionate and vehement harangues. It's free for all. But the Congo, with ten to twenty times as many African dead over the same period is not called“genocide” and passes almost unnoticed. Sudan sits atop lakes of oil. It has large supplies of uranium, and other minerals, significant water resources, and a strategic location near still more African oil and resources. The unasked question is whether the nation's Republican and Democratic foreign policy elite are using claims of genocide, and appeals for "humanitarian intervention" to grease the way for the next oil and resource wars on the African continent.

The regular manufacture and the constant maintenance of false realities in the service of American empire is a core function of the public relations profession and the corporate news media. Whether it's fake news stories about wonder drugs and how toxic chemicals are good for you, bribed commentators and journalists discoursing on the benefits of No Child Left Behind, Hollywood stars advocating military intervention to save African orphans, or slick propaganda campaigns employing viral marketing techniques to reach out to college students, bloggers, churches and ordinary citizens, it pays to take a close look behind the facade.

Among the latest false realities being pushed upon the American people are the simplistic pictures of Black vs. Arab genocide in Darfur, and the proposed solution: a robust US-backed or US-led military intervention in Western Sudan . Increasing scrutiny is being focused upon the "Save Darfur" lobby and the Save Darfur Coalition; upon its founders, its finances, its methods and motivations and its truthfulness. In the spirit of furthering that examination we here present ten reasons to suspect that the "Save Darfur" campaign is a PR scam to justify US intervention in Africa.

1. It wouldn't be the first Big Lie our government and media elite told us to justify a war.

Elders among us can recall the Tonkin Gulf Incident, which the US government deliberately provoked to justify initiation of the war in Vietnam . This rationale was quickly succeeded by the need to help the struggling infant "democracy" in South Vietnam, and the still useful "fight 'em over there so we don't have to fight 'em over here"

nonsense. More recently the bombings, invasions and occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq have been variously explained by people on the public payroll as necessary to "get Bin Laden" as revenge for 9-11, as measures to take "the world's most dangerous weapons" from the hands of "the world's most dangerous regimes", as measures to enable the struggling Iraqi "democracy" stand on its own two feet, and necessary because it's still better to "fight them over there so we don't have to fight them here".

2. It wouldn't even be the first time the U.S. government and media elite employed "genocide prevention" as a rationale for military intervention in an oil-rich region.

The 1995 US and NATO military intervention in the former Yugoslavia was supposedly a "peacekeeping" operation to stop a genocide. The lasting result of that campaign is Camp Bondsteel, one of the largest military bases on the planet. The U.S. is practically the only country in the world that maintains military bases outside its own borders. At just under a thousand acres, Camp Bondsteel offers the US military the ability to pre-position large quantities of equipment and supplies within striking distance of Caspian oil fields, pipeline routes and relevant sea lanes. It is also widely believed to be the site of one of the US 's secret prison and torture facilities.

3. If stopping genocide in Africa really was on the agenda, why the focus on Sudan with 200,000 to 400,000 dead rather than Congo with five million dead?

"The notion that a quarter million Darfuri dead are a genocide and five million dead Congolese are not is vicious and absurd," according to Congolese activist Nita Evele. "What's happened and what is still happening in Congo is not a tribal conflict and it's not a civil war. It is an invasion. It is a genocide with a death toll of five million, twenty times that of Darfur , conducted for the purpose of plundering Congolese mineral and natural resources."

More than anything else, the selective and cynical application of the term "genocide" to Sudan , rather than to the Congo where ten to twenty times as many Africans have been murdered reveals the depth of hypocrisy around the "Save Darfur" movement. In the Congo, where local gangsters, mercenaries and warlords along with invading armies from Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Angola engage in slaughter, mass rape and regional depopulation on a scale that dwarfs anything happening in Sudan, all the players eagerly compete to guarantee that the extraction of vital coltan for Western computers and cell phones, the export of uranium for Western reactors and nukes, along with diamonds, gold, copper, timber and other Congolese resources continue undisturbed.

Former UN Ambassador Andrew Young and George H.W. Bush both serve on the board

of Barrcik Gold, one of the largest and most active mining concerns in war-torn Congo . Evidently, with profits from the brutal extraction of Congolese wealth flowing to the West, there can be no Congolese "genocide" worth noting, much less interfering with. For their purposes, U.S. strategic planners may regard their Congolese model as the ideal means of capturing African wealth at minimal cost without the bother of official U.S. boots on the ground.

4. It's all about Sudanese oil.

Sudan, and the Darfur region in particular, sit atop a lake of oil. But Sudanese oil fields are not being developed and drilled by Exxon or Chevron or British Petroleum. Chinese banks, oil and construction firms are making the loans, drilling the wells, laying the pipelines to take Sudanese oil where they intend it to go, calling far too many shots for a twenty-first century in which the U.S. aspires to control the planet's energy supplies. A U.S. and NATO military intervention will solve that problem for U.S. planners.

5. It's all about Sudanese uranium, gum arabic and other natural resources.

Uranium is vital to the nuclear weapons industry and an essential fuel for nuclear reactors. Sudan possesses high quality deposits of uranium. Gum arabic is an essential ingredient in pharmaceuticals, candies and beverages like Coca-Cola and Pepsi, and Sudanese exports of this commodity are 80% of the world's supply. When comprehensive U.S. sanctions against the Sudanese regime were being considered in 1997, industry lobbyists stepped up and secured an exemption in the sanctions bill to guarantee their supplies of this valuable Sudanese commodity. But an in-country U.S. and NATO military presence is a more secure guarantee that the extraction of Sudanese resources, like those of the Congo , flow westward to the U.S. and the European Union.

6. It's all about Sudan 's strategic location

Sudan sits opposite Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States , where a large fraction of the world's easily extracted oil will be for a few more years. Darfur borders on Libya and Chad , with their own vast oil resources, is within striking distance of West and Central Africa , and is a likely pipeline route. The Nile River flows through Sudan before reaching Egypt , and Southern Sudan has water resources of regional significance too. With the creation of AFRICOM, the new Pentagon command for the African continent, the U.S. has made open and explicit its intention to plant a strategic footprint on the African continent. From permanent Sudanese bases, the U.S. military could influence the politics and ecocomies of Africa for a generation to come.

7. The backers and founders of the "Save Darfur" movement are the well-connected and well-funded U.S. foreign policy elite. According to a copyrighted Washington Post story this summer

"The "Save Darfur (Coalition) was created in 2005 by two groups concerned about genocide in the African country - the American Jewish World Service and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum...

"The coalition has a staff of 30 with expertise in policy and public relations. Its budget was about $15 million in the most recent fiscal year...

"Save Darfur will not say exactly how much it has spent on its ads, which this week have attempted to shame China , host of the 2008 Olympics, into easing its support for Sudan . But a coalition spokeswoman said the amount is in the millions of dollars."

Though the "Save Darfur" PR campaign employs viral marketing techniques, reaching out to college students, even to black bloggers, it is not a grassroots affair, as were the movement against apartheid and in support of African liberation movements in South Africa, Namibia, Angola and Mozambique a generation ago. Top heavy with evangelical Christians who preach the coming war for the end of the world, and with elements known for their uncritical support of Israeli rejectionism in the Middle East, the Save Darfur movement is clearly an establishment affair, a propaganda campaign that spends millions of dollars each month to manfacture consent for US military intervention in Africa under the cloak of stopping or preventing genocide.

8. None of the funds raised by the "Save Darfur Coalition", the flagship of the "Save Darfur Movement" go to help needy Africans on the ground in Darfur, according to stories in both the Washington Post and the New York Times.

"None of the money collected by Save Darfur goes to help the victims and their families. Instead, the coalition pours its proceeds into advocacy efforts that are primarily designed to persuade governments to act."

9. "Save Darfur" partisans in the U.S. are not interested in political negotiations to end the conflict in Darfur

President Bush has openly and repeatedly attempted to throw monkey wrenches at peace negotiations to end the war in Darfur . Even pro-intervention scholars and humanitarian organizations active on the ground have criticized the U.S. for endangering humanitarian relief workers, and for effectively urging rebel parties in Darfur to refuse peace talks and hold out for U.S. and NATO intervention on their behalf.

The slick, well financed and nearly seamless PR campaign simplistically depicts the conflict as strictly a racial affair, in which Arabs, generally despised in the US media anyway, are exterminating the black population of Sudan . In the make-believe world it creates, there is no room for negotiation. But in fact, many of Sudan 's 'Arabs", even the Janjiweed, are also black. In any case, they were armed and unleashed by a government which has the power to disarm them if it chooses, and can also negotiate in good faith if it chooses. Negotiations are never a guarantee of anything, but refusal to participate in negotiations, as the U.S. appears to be urging the rebels in Darfur to do, and as the "Save Darfur" PR campaign justifies, avoids any path to a political settlement among Sudanese, leaving open only the road of U.S and NATO military intervention.

10. Blackwater and other U.S. mercenary contractors, the unofficial armed wings of the Republican party and the Pentagon are eagerly pitching their services as part of the solution to the Darfur crisis.

"Chris Taylor, head of strategy for Blackwater, says his company has a database of thousands of former police and military officers for security assignments. He says Blackwater personnel could set up perimeters and guard Darfurian villages and refugee camp in support of the U.N. Blackwater officials say it would not take many men to fend off the Janjaweed, a militia that is supported by the Sudanese government and attacks villages on camelback."

Apparently Blackwater doesn't need to come to the Congo, where hunger and malnutrition, depopulation, mass rape and the disappearance of schools, hospitals and

civil society into vast law free zones ruled by an ever-changing cast of African proxies (like the son of the late and unlamented Idi Amin), all under a veil of complicit media silence already constitute the perfect business-friendly environment for siphoning off the vast wealth of that country at minimal cost.

Look for the adoption of the Congolese model across the wide areas of Africa that U.S. strategic planners call "ungoverned spaces". Just don't expect to see details on the evening news, or hear about them from Oprah, George Clooney or Angelina Jolie.

Sarkozy - THE NAKED TRUTH

Political opportunist Nicolas Sarkozy (French President) forgot three fundamental lessons when he decided to denounce the burka.

The first one is that men should stay well clear of becoming involved in expressing opinions on women’s clothes, unless of course you happen to be called Lacroix, Gaultier, Lagerfeld or Ghesquiere.

This was a lesson learned the hard way by former British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw who was pilloried when he questioned the nikab after asking a female constituent to lift her veil so he could see her face.

Could you imagine him making the same request of any female members of the Saudi royal household during one of his galloping missions to the Middle East?

Foolishly Scotsmen Gordon Brown and John Reid, hailing from a country where men wear pleated skirts and paint their faces blue, then waded in with the grace of a couple of dancing bears.

Even the Bishop of Rochester - a man who wears a pointy hat and a purple dress - chipped in his dislike of the nikab, full face veil or burka.

Of course they were all despatched very quickly by Muslim women in Britain who proved themselves to be anything but oppressed, subjugated creatures. And just to show there's real solidarity across women of faith and no faith, quite a few western feminists expressed their disdain at Straw and co while standing shoulder to shoulder with their Muslim sisters.

The second lesson is try and be sincere if you are taking up a cause. Sarkozy feigned his utmost respect for women by saying he felt the burka represented the unacceptable symbol of women's enslavement - today I can unveil him to be a purveyor of weasel words.

If he really cared about the subjugation of women he would seriously tackle the appalling levels of domestic violence French women suffer at the hands of French men - two million are victims of bullying, violent partners ... a staggering 400 are murdered by their spouse.

So how many women in France actually wear the burka? The answer is a very tiny minority - so much so that when the BBC'’s Emma Jane Kirby went to interview a burka-wearing woman in Paris she couldn’t find a single one!

The former BBC’'s Europe correspondent went to the Muslim quarter in the capital but all she could find were lots of women of North African origin wearing hijabs. She was given blank expressions and shrugs of the shoulder when she asked if any of them knew women who wore burkas - and the local Islamic dress shops didn’t stock any.

So why would Sarkozy launch such an onslaught on the burka, describing Muslim women who wear it as “prisoners behind a grille, cut off from social life, deprived of their identity"?

As pointed out by one Islamic observer: '“The irony is that many Muslim women would say the current headscarf ban in France has created exactly this situation for them”'.

Well the real reason had nothing to do with the burka and everything to do with Sarkozy putting pressure on the Liberal Left, throwing a few cheap shots at the expense of Muslim women while trying to pick up a few votes at their expense as well.

Sarkozy, like many male politicians, is pretty gutless so in a pathetic attempt to disguise his real motivations in wanting to pick up votes, he invents a proposed ban of the burka as a defence of women's rights. This, he knows will go down well with the French electorate who see veiled women as a threat to their liberal self esteem.

Using women to win votes is a common political ploy - I remember when Tony Blair and George W Bush claimed their invasion in Afghanistan was in defence of women’s rights and designed to liberate Afghan women.

Those two even used and pushed their own doting wives to stand in front of the world's media to justify their husband's invasion of the country - on a recent visit I can tell you there are few career women emerging from the rubble of Kabul.

So next time a politician tries to drive through any form of controversial measure or make a spectacular announcement, please don’t fall for the mealy-mouthed excuse that they're doing it for the liberation of women and/or ethnic minority groups.

Reading the weekend newspaper opinion pages and columnists, I was amazed at how many supposedly intelligent feminists fell for the Sarkozy bull. But they did - hook, line and sinker exhibiting an astonishing shallowness in their writing.

I genuinely have a feeling Sarkozy is one of these weak-kneed, lily-livered men who trembles at the thought of empowered women. And I think the sight of a woman in a burka makes him feel inferior.

Could it be that because his wife - as beautiful as she is - has bared all for every man on the planet to ogle, that the very sight of a burka-clad female makes him feel insecure in his own relationship?

As any European schoolboy can testify from the pictures Blu-tacked to his ceiling, to the crumpled, sticky torn out, somewhat crusty pages of last year's GQ hidden under their bed, France's First Lady is the stuff of male fantasies.

Consider this, if a woman chooses to be veiled rather than show her face to a man, is she doing so to protect her husband’s feelings, in which case she could be seen as being compliant and servile, or - more importantly - is she doing so to protect her own face from the violation of a man's eyes?

Could it be that some of these women, when peering out of their burkas at the French leader, feel so special that they do not want the likes of him staring at all of their features?

And this, I believe, is what disturbs Sarkozy because if burka-clad women don’t want to be peered or leered at by men like him then this would be seen not as a show of subjugation but a sense of female superiority.

After all Mrs Sarkozy can be viewed in all her naked glory by anyone who can access the internet or a copy of last year’s GQ.

And then someone paid $91,000 for a naked portrait at a Christie’s auction in New York.

On top of that it appears someone stole hundreds of “highly intimate” images of France’s First Lady and an ex-lover a couple of months ago.

A fascinating stuff, but let’s not dwell too long on this subject, I've yet to raise the third lesson Sarkozy needs to learn and that is: People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.

A quick scratch beneath the thin veneer of public office reveals the French leader to be a sauteur.*

And the source of this information is none other than the long-suffering Cecilia Sarkozy, who had to put up with 18 years of being married to a man with behavioural problems including being mean, cold and a serial womaniser.

In the book Cecilia, published by Flammarion in January 2008, she said of her husband: "He has a ridiculous side. He is undignified. Nicolas doesn't come over like a president. He has a real behaviour problem ... He needs someone to point it out to him. I did it for 18 years and I can't do it anymore. I am the last person who can do it."

These, and other, extracts incensed Sarkozy and his estranged wife's lawyers sought an injunction to prevent publication on the grounds that the book had invaded the former first lady's privacy – not that it was inaccurate. The former French first lady Cécilia Sarkozy, divorced in October 2007, is quoted as criticising her ex-husband's morals, his parenting skills and his fitness to be president.

That must have been extremely crushing and hurtful for France’s little emperor’. But no more hurtful than attacking and scapegoating harmless Muslim women. I wonder if he feels as though they are judging him from behind their veils.

Well we're all judging France's ‘Little Emperor’ now and the verdict isn’t a good one.

GENOCIDE is being committed in the name of “alternative lifestyles.”

Homosexuals and lesbians, by denying their true, physical sexuality, are denying the reproduction of God’s most precious and the best creatures, the human beings. Hundreds of civil rights groups, environmental groups, and right-to-life groups in Canada and in the USA are generally quick to react to any act that directly or indirectly leads to genocide or other violation of basic human rights. When it comes to the “gay lifestyle,” however, no one objects to the fact that homosexuality and lesbianism are directly leading to the extinction of the human race.

It is beyond doubt that the most valuable specie of the earth is the human being. Without human life on this earth, there is no meaning to creation, and the current environment will cease to exist. Same-sex relationships cut the roots of the human race and seriously endanger the world environmental health and welfare. If cutting the roots of trees can change the climate, then cutting the roots of human beings is a deathblow to the planet. North American Caucasians are moving towards extinction. Current data and research indicates that, if colored immigrants will not move in large numbers into the several states of Canada, populations cannot sustain. Different states are offering different incentives to lure the immigrants. If they will not respond in the immediate future, the daily affairs of the civic life will be badly affected. The majority of the white population is in a higher age bracket. There are more pets than children in their homes. If the situation persists, the white race will become “rare bird” in next 50 years. Several organizations are committed to saving wildlife, but only a few, poorly funded organizations are trying to save human life by curbing the “gay lifestyle.”

White supremacists prefer to promote hatred toward and destruction of people of color instead of discouraging the sickness of gayism in their own societies. Christian priests, ministers, and other church leaders now embrace homosexuality, and their churches are still full of their devotees, and their members never decrease. It shows the apathy and lack of concern of the religious groups of this country. There is even a “Gay Bible,” from which has been deleted any mention of homosexuality as a sin. Both the Jewish Bible and the New Testament, however, categorically condemned the act and suggests the death penalty for active homosexuals.

JEWISH BIBLE (OLD TESTAMENT): You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is abomination. (Leviticus 18:22)

If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them. (Leviticus 20:13)

NEW TESTAMENT: "But from the beginning of the creation, God 'made them male and female.' 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, ‘And the two shall become one flesh'; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh. "Therefore what God has joined together let not man separate." (Mark 10:6-9)

Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; Being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; Who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them. (Romans 1:27-32)

The number of homosexuals and lesbians are no higher in Canada and USA than in any other community; however, North American gays are the most organized. They have become so powerful that all the political and social leadership has completely surrendered to them. Starting legislation from a few states in Canada, the federal law of Canada now allows same sex marriage. Six states of USA has approved legislation for same sex-marriage. These legislations will definitely broaden this peril.

Canada has crossed all the limits. Any remark against this “sickness” would be considered political death of any politician. No one dares to speak out against this disease, against this epidemic, against this anti-human, anti-birth, anti-environment approach of same-sex fanatics. Liberals and NDP are the promoters and activists of promoting the “gay lifestyle” and “gay pride” in Canada, and conservatives have submitted to them.

It is the first time in the history of mankind that sick people, instead of asking for treatment from doctors, are claiming a right to remain the sick. They demand the right to remain sick and practice their sickness their entire lives. The first mention of homosexuality in the Bible and Qur’an is in the story of Lut (Lot) (peace upon him), who was a messenger of God.

“And we sent Lut as a Messenger: Remember that he said to his people, "Have you become so shameless that you commit such indecent acts as no one committed before you in the world? You gratify your lust with men instead of women: indeed you are a people who are transgressors of all limits!" (Al Quran: 7: 80-81)

Before the nation of Lut (peace upon him) the act of homosexuality did not exist, and that is another proof that it is not natural. In the case of Lut’s nation, homosexuality was willful decadence in an act of worshiping one’s own desires and lusts. Lust and desire are the idols of homosexuals, and the breaking of idols is an Abrahamic tradition of Muslims, Jews, and Christians. The Abrahamic religion respect civil rights and freedoms of all people, including the right of future generations to be conceived and born. The gay lifestyle denies future generations the right to life!

The worshipers of lust celebrate an annual Pride Day in Canada and USA, which, this year, was on Sunday, June 28. We Muslims, Christians, and Jews, who believe in One God, procreation, family, and marriage, must unite to fight against this menace of the society. In doing so, we must also offer spiritual guidance and therapeutic health care to those lost in the sin of homosexuality and lesbianism.

I propose that those of us true to God’s Word celebrate Decency Day every year on Gay pride’s shame day.

What is the logic behind a Muslim woman wearing Hijab (Covering her Body)?

The message from a Muslim Woman wearing Hijab is simple! “Men do not look at me like a piece of meat and men are not allowed to treat me like an object of sex toy and I do not allow men to market my body to sell their business products”

In the world; especially in the western world, many negative things are being spoken particularly about Muslim Women. Because of western political propaganda against Islam, the world has been made to believe that Islam does not consider men and women as equal. And those Muslim women are suppressed. They do not enjoy the freedom which non-muslims women do, which is completely wrong!

We have to agree that women are different from men and their rights cannot be won by competing men because their rights in society are different from men, Hijab is one of the righteous deeds and it is a sign of honor and equality which stands as a shield of protection against evil man.

Liberation or Sexploitation

Look at the glossy cover of any magazine or advertisements on TV and newspaper, you will find that most of these advertisements have inadequately dressed women in charming poses to attract the attention of men. This proves that the Western society considers woman only as a sex symbol. The western world teaches women in such ways, women are free to do what they want; does this mean women have got their freedom? Women's freedom is not by exposing their body in the way they want or by challenging men.

In the modern society of today, a woman has always been looked upon as just another sexual object for the men. Why should one display one's beauty for unwanted eyes to feast upon? The Hijab protects a woman's honor and doesn't arouse unwanted passion from the opposite sex.

The liberation of women in Islam is far superior to Western liberation as it allows women to live with respect, dignity and equality in society.

Equality does not mean aping and behaving like men or dancing to their carnal tunes; that would be an act of inferiority in the face of one's own femininity.

A truly liberated woman always dresses decently and modestly. A true woman will never degrade her body and sell her dignity to the highest bidder. No woman is truly liberated if she is still the slave of her wayward conscience, bodily lust or infidelity.

However, in Islam, women, whatever their role as mothers, wives, sisters or daughters, command respect and have a constructive role to play in society. The Hijab itself gives an aura of freedom to the womankind, facilitating their movement and protecting them from provocation and wanton greed of the human wolves. Removal of the Hijab makes you vulnerable to the lust of men.

Some often ask, What is wrong with attacting men? we can answer them by throwing the same question back to them.

There is nothing wrong to attract "A MAN(Husband)" but why do you want to attract "MEN"? a wise and honest woman's choice will be a modest Hijab!

What is Hijab? (Hijaab (Muslim Veil), Hejab (An Act of Faith), Islamic dress for women)

There are many sisters who have failed to understand the actual meaning of Hijab. Hijab technically means covering. Islam desires the preservation of social tranquility and familial peace. Hence, it asks women to cover themselves in their inter-actions with men, whom they are not related to.

Hijab is obedience to her Creator!

Who knows better than the creator; what are the weaknesses and the strengths of what he created!

(Quran 24:31)

"And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms"

Why is Hijab necessary?

The dangerous consequences of the Western culture of nakedness and permissiveness are before us. We should think twice before blindly trying to imitate Western life-styles.

How should women observe Hijab correctly?

Basically, the dress of ladies should cover the whole body except the face and hands (i.e. palms and fingers). Hair should not be exposed because Islam considers it as half of the total beauty of women. The Hijab could be of any form and color, a one-piece chader or a three-piece ensemble, as long as it is not tight fitting and does not attract people's attention.

Baseless objections against Hijab

Hijab seeks to imprison women: Those who feel that Hijab imprisons women should refrain from living in houses because it is nearer to a prison than Hijab.
Hijab subordinates women: In fact, culture, which promotes nakedness, takes people nearer to the culture of animals. Wearing the Hijab, on the contrary, liberates women from the trap of Western fashion and maladies. It gives them greater, rather than less freedom and mobility.
Why only women? Science has confirmed that visual stimulation plays a predominant role in the physiology of men compared to women. The fact that the sex-industry in the West is targeted towards the male-market confirms it.

Victims of Ridicule: Some of our sisters come up with the excuse that the non-believers laugh at them if they observe Hijab and they feel degraded. They may laugh for a little while but after some time they will have no choice but to respect the Muslim women observing Hijab for their discipline, which could not be shaken, by their little laughs.

Let us not forget the famous phrase: The one who laughs last laughs the longest.

Beauty is meant to be appreciated: True! But only by the husband. Hence women who truly love their husbands would never wish to be seen in public without Hijab.

What are the disadvantages of discarding Hijab?

Becoming an easy target of anti-social elements.
Causing great stresses, insecurity and suspicion in the minds of husbands, ultimatelydisturbing the familial harmony.
Instigating young people to deviate towards the path of lust and immorality.
Giving rise to cases of divorce, adultery, rape and illegitimate children.

What are the advantages of observing Hijab?

Confidence in social participation as human being and not as sexual commodity.
Guarding on her self from the lustful looks of men.
Not diverting people's attention from constructive social work.
Improving the moral character of the society.

Those who reject Hijab and wish to attract men are suffering from inferiority complex. They believe men are superior and in order to overcome this feeling, they use their feminine charms. But why should a Muslim woman have such a feeling when she is fully aware of her equality with men?

Hijab, therefore, has such benefits as a guard against any assault, equality with men, air of respect and honor and most important of all, obedience to Allah (SWT) which is equivalent to blood of martyr. Hijab requires women to avoid any sort of attraction to men.

In conclusion, women can achieve true dignity and experience true emancipation by observing Hijab and not by discarding it.

Few months ago the fourth most powerful military in the world escalated its war against a stateless community that has been exiled and crowded into one of the most densely populated 360 square kilometers in the world. According to the Israeli press, this invasion had been planned for over six months.

In 25 days, out of a population of 1.5 million Palestinians in Gaza, Israel massacred 1317, including 419 children & 108 women. It wounded 5340 (6657 were either killed or wounded). This killed the same proportion of Gazan society as would killing 263,400 Americans in the U.S., including 83,800 children and 21,600 women, and injuring more than one million.

The invaders used a wide array of high-tech weapons, including white phosphorous and what appears to be the experimental Dense Inert Metal Explosive, or DIME—a new weapon that penetrates the body with a fine metal dust that amputates limbs, cannot be surgically removed, causesorgan failure and cancer.

This escalation was supported by most governments of the world—most adamantly the United States—and including neighboring Arab states. However, alongside this gruesome assault we saw one of the largest mobilizations of international solidarity the human community has seen in quite a while.

From the beginning of Zionist settlement of Palestine, the settlers have been at war the native inhabitants. Zionist colonization started around the turn of the 20th century. In its first few years Zionists used highly exploited Arab labor to build a Jewish-dominated economy. However, early on Zionists found that Jewish labor could not compete with the local Arab labor and rapidly began excluding Arab labor altogether.

Zionist organizations and investors bought land primarily from the elite Arab absentee landlords and pushed all Arab labor off the purchased land. In buying up so much land the Zionists infused the property market with money. This drove prices up and pushed other small farmers into debt and off their land.

Meanwhile, the Zionists organized campaigns to push Arabs out of the economy. Jews who employed Arab labor were targeted with demonstrations, boycotts, and physical attacks. Here’s an account by a socialist Zionist, David Hacohen, leader of the Zionist workers’ movement in Palestine in the 1930s and 1940s: "When I joined the socialist students’ club (in London) there were English, Irish, Jews, Chinese, Indians and Africans—all under English domination.

“Already at that time I had to fight with my close comrades around the issue of Jewish socialism, to justify the fact that I would not accept Arabs in my union, the Histadrut, that we urged Jewish households to not buy anything at Arab stores, that we organized guards around the orchards to keep Arab laborers from working there, that we tossed gasoline on Arab tomatoes and broke Arab eggs in the baskets of women who had bought them.

"The Jewish National Fund sent Yehoshua Hankin to Beirut to buy lands from rich absentee landowners and we then kicked out the farmers. It was all right to buy dozens of hectares from an Arab, but to sell, God forbid, one Jewish hectare to an Arab, was forbidden. It really wasn’t easy to explain!"

Needless to say, the native communities were not in favor of these developments. And so, Zionists came to rely heavily on the British to protect their project. They procured laws and declarations in support of their colonization—most notably the Balfour declaration in 1917—as well as favored banking status and physical protection.

Zionist police forces eventually collaborated with the British in keeping down native uprisings, which were fighting a dual colonization carried out by Britain on the one hand and the Zionists on the other.

By 1936 the Palestinian resistance came to a head with a general strike that held out for six months. By the fifth month Britain cracked down hard on the resistance. They arrested strikers and blew up buildings, terrorizing the population. One incident alone made 6000 people in Jaffa homeless.

Despite the barbaric force employed, the British were losing to the resistance by 1938 and began to join with Zionist forces, who then aided in crushing the rebellion. By 1939, 14,411 Zionist soldiers had joined this effort.

It should be noted that only in Palestine was the Arab rebellion directed at any Jewish institutions, and that even there the rebellion targeted institutions specifically related to Zionist settlement, and avoided the native Jewish inhabitants.

With the Arab uprising of 1936 the Zionists began to rely on a combination of walls and towers in their settlement construction. This design incorporates two features that have proved essential to the Zionist project: The wall to keep the native inhabitants outside the colonial community, and the tower to dominate them.

Getting hold of a local force that was already mobilized against the native population was a godsend to the British colonial forces. It was in this co-operation that many future Israeli military leaders—such as Moshe Dayan—learned how to crush resistance.

This pact with Britain allowed the Zionists to acquire enough land and power under the British mandate to conquer a far larger swath of land. This was no mere happy accident. From very early on Zionist leaders intended their new state’s land to reach deep into modern Arab territory. This is recorded in the works of modern Zionism’s founder, Theodore Herzl, and right up to the founder of the Israeli state, Ben Gurion.

When Ben Gurion spoke to the World Council of Poale Zion in 1938, he said, "The boundaries of Zionist aspiration include southern Lebanon, southern Syria, today’s Jordan, all of Cis-Jordan, and the Sinai."

In 1947 the United Nations attempted to partition Palestine between Jews and Arabs. The partition was unacceptable to everyone. On the one hand, it would have given far more land to Jews than they were living on. At the time, Jewish land owners held only 6 percent of the land. On the other hand, the Zionist movement sought to claim far more land for itself and would not settle for the partition.

In 1948, war broke out between the Zionist forces and the Arab countries surrounding Palestine. Before the war there were about 950,000 Palestinians in the land that became Israel. The Zionist forces drove out or killed between 700,000 and 800,000 of the 950,000 Palestinians.

In the past, Zionists have hidden the role Zionist forces played in ethnically cleansing the land of its Palestinian inhabitants, but such denial is pretty futile by now. Even right-wing historians like Benny Morris have heavily documented the atrocities committed by Zionist troops and their intent to drive out the native inhabitants. Morris’s only problem with the operations is that they did not do a thorough enough job in expelling the Arabs.

We have, for instance, accounts such as that of Zvi Ankori, commander of the Haganah, who said, "I saw cut off genitalia and women’s crushed stomachs. … It was direct murder."

Menachem Begin, a former prime minister of Israel, expressed great pride in the terrifying effects of the Zionist operations. On the massacre of 254 men, women, and children in Deir-Yasin, Begin said, "A legend of terror spread amongst Arabs who were seized with panic at the mention of our Irgun soldiers. It was worth half a dozen battalions to the forces of Israel. Arabs throughout the country … were seized with limitless panic and started to flee for their lives. This mass flight soon developed into a maddened, uncontrollable stampede.

"Of the 800,000 Arabs who lived on the present territory of the State of Israel, only some 165,000 are still there. The political and economic significance of this development can hardly be overstated."

The 700,000 Palestinians who fled their homes in 1948 have not been able to return since. They and their children now number 4 or 5 million people. Many of them are huddled in the same refugee camps they entered when they first fled. They are one of the largest and longest running refugee populations in the world.

After these Palestinians were expelled, the new Israeli government systematically destroyed Palestinian homes and possessions. They destroyed nearly 400 whole villages between 1948 and 1949, and even more in the 1950s.

Then the newly formed Israeli state confiscated nearly all of the remaining land. By the time the Jewish state was founded, the Jewish National Fund estimates that it had 90% of the land.

Land held by the Jewish National Fund cannot be leased to a non-Jew, not sub-leased to a non-Jew. It cannot be sold, mortgaged, given, or bequeathed to a non-Jew. Non-Jews cannot be employed on the land, cannot be employed in any connection with cultivation of land. In modern Israel, the Jewish National Fund holds 13% of the land. Arabs living within the bounds of Israel were given citizenship, but were placed under martial law until 1966.

The government continues to use a number of methods to limit the power of the Palestinian citizens of Israel, such as refusing building permits or declaring Arab land a closed military zone.

Furthermore, Israeli law explicitly states that a political party "may not participate in the elections if there is in its goals or actions a denial of the existence of the State of Israel as the state of the Jewish people, a denial of the democratic nature of the state, or incitement to racism."

In December 2002, a Palestinian Knesset member Azmi Bishara and his party Balad, which calls for Israel to become "a state of all its citizens," were banned by the Israeli Central Elections Committee since Israel cannot be both a state "of all its citizens" and "a state of the Jewish people." One out of five Israelis are non-Jewish Arabs.

While the Supreme Court overturned the decision in January 2003, the conflict between Israel’s Jewish character and its parliamentary democracy continues to sharpen. During the recent attacks on Gaza the Israeli Elections Committee banned parties representing two-thirds of Israeli Arabs largely in response to the sympathy they showed for Gazans.

Israel has no constitution defending basic minority rights. Because it is a Jewish state with a significant non-Jewish population such guarantees are impossible. The wide disparity between Jewish and Arab ownership of land and wealth, and the solid Jewish control and occupancy of the military, places the material bases of state power solidly in the hands of the Jewish population.

While the majority status of the Jewish population allows the state to afford some parliamentary decorations, the continued growth of the Arab population will increasingly limit the Israeli ruling class’s ability to defend the Jewish character of the state within the framework of majoritarian democracy.

Israel could not have become a Jewish state without forcibly expelling the majority of indigenous population. It cannot remain a Jewish state without forcibly preventing the re-entry of the expelled indigenous population and without forcibly preventing immigration of non-Jews into Israel.

It cannot remain a Jewish state without denying the rights—or even existence—of the remaining indigenous population within Israel.

Israel has an ever-present interest in acquiring control over the natural resources in its region, and over the economy into which it integrates. For its own immediate interests Israel has always been opposed to the strengthening of Arab countries, especially under independent—much less working class—leadership. Because of its inherent isolation from the world around it, and the violence needed to create and maintain its existence, the Jewish state has always required an imperial sponsor—now the United States.

This was never a significant contradiction since, as a colonial project, as a spartan minority in conflict with the majority; the Jewish state has always been formed by the same ideology and has held roughly the same interests as imperial powers in the region. Both imperialists and Zionists need to dominate the Arab majority.

If the Palestinian struggle is to succeed, it must overturn the Jewish supremacy imposed by Zionism and the dominance of U.S. imperialism.

Story behind Abu Ghraib Prison || A woman's tears

Nadia is one of the victims of the American mercenaries in Abu Ghraib prison. She was detained for unknown reasons. When she was released from the prison, didn't throw herself into the arms of her family as most of the oppressed prisoners released have done dose, especially when he is being fueled by the fire of the oppression and a yearning for his family.

Simply, Nadia escaped immediately after she left prison, not because of the shame that will follow her because of some crime she has committed but because of what she and the other Iraqi captive women have been subject to; rape, and torture by the hands of the American mercenaries in Abu Gharib prison. The walls of the prison tell many tragic stories but what Nadia tells is the living truth and a living hell.

Nadia begins her story:

"I was visiting one of my relatives, and suddenly the American forces attacked the home and started to inspect it. They found some light weapons. So, they arrested all people in the home including me. I tried to explain to the interpreter, who was accompanying the American patrol, that I am just a visitor. However, my trials failed. I cried, begged them, and I lost consciousness from fear when they took me to Abu Gharib prison.

Nadia continues "they put me alone in a dark and dirty prison cell. I expected that I will be released soon, especially when the investigation proved that I hadn't committed a crime"

Nadia elaborated while tears poured down her cheek, a telling sign of just how much she has suffered.

"The first day was so burdensome.

The cell was malodorous, humid and dark, and this condition increased the fear inside me more and more. The laughs of the soldier outside the cell made me even more scared. I was afraid of what would happen to me. For the first time I felt that I was in a difficult gridlock and that I had entered an unknown world that I would not get out of.

In the middle of these different feelings, I heard a voice for an American soldier woman who was speaking in an Arabic language. She said to me: "I didn't imagine that the weapons' traders in Iraq are women." When I started to explain to her the circumstances of the situation, she beat me cruelly. I cried and shouted "By Allah! I am oppressed, By Allah! I am oppressed"

The soldier showered me with insults in a way that I have never thought possible or that I would ever be subjected to under any circumstances. Then, she started to deride me saying that she was monitoring me all the day via the satellite, and that they can track their enemies even inside their own bedrooms by American technology.

Then she laughed and said: "I was watching you when you were making love with your husband." I replied in a confused voice "But I am not married".

She beat me for more than one an hour and she forced me to drink a glass of water, and I knew

later that they put a drug in it. I regained my consciousness after two days to find myself naked. I knew immediately that I have lost something that all the laws in the earth will not be able to return it to me once again. I had been raped. A hysterical fit attacked me and I started to hit my head violently against the walls till more than five American soldiers head by that soldier women entered the cell and started to beat me, and they raped me alternately while they laughing and listening to a loud music.

Day by day the scenario of raping me was repeated. And every day they invent new ways that are crueler than the prior ways."

She went on describing the horrible acts of the American criminals:

"After about one month, a Negro soldier entered my cell and threw me two pieces of American military clothes. He said in weak Arabic language to wear them. After he put a black bag on my head, he led me to a public toilet where there are pipes for cold and hot water and he asked me to bathe. He then closed the door and left.

I was so exhausted and feeling pain, and despite the tremendous number of the bruises in my body, I poured out some water on my body. Before I finish my bath, the Negro soldier came in. I frightened, and I hit him in the face with the water bowl. His reaction was so tough. He raped me cruelly and spit on my face, and then he left and returned with two soldiers who returned me to the cell.

The treatment continued that way, to the extent that sometimes I was raped ten times in a day, the matter which affected my health negatively."

Nadia continued in revealing the American horrible actions made against the Iraqi women, saying:

"After more than 4 months, a woman soldier woman came, and I concluded from her conversation with other soldiers that her name is Mary. She said to me "now you have a golden opportunity, since an officer who has a high position will visit us today, if you deal with him positively, you would be released, especially because we are sure you are innocent."

I replied, "If you are sure of I am innocent, why you don't release me?"

She screamed in nervousness, "The only way that guarantees your releasing is to be positive with them."

She took me to the public toilets, and she supervised my bath while she was holding a thick stick, hitting me by it if I didn't perform her orders. Then, she gave me makeup, and warned me not to cry and ruin my makeup. Then she took me to an empty small room where there was nothing but a cover on the floor, and after one an hour she came accompanied with four soldiers who was holding cameras. She took off her clothes and she harassed me as if she was a man. The soldiers were laughing and listening to a noisy music, and taking photographs to me in all poses, and they were emphasizing on my face. The woman asked me to smile otherwise she is going to kill me, and she took a gun from one of her colleagues and fired four bullets near my head, and swore that the fifth bullet will be fired in my head.

After that, the four soldiers raped me alternately the matter which made me lose my consciousness. When I regained the consciousness I found myself in the cell and the traces of their teeth, nails and cigarettes are in everywhere in my body."

Nadia stopped narrating her tragedy to wipe her tears, and then she continued: "After one day Mary came and told me that I was cooperative, and I will be released but after I watch the film that they have shot. I was in pain when I saw the film, and she (Mary) said: "you have been created for the sole purpose for us to enjoy". At the moment I became very anger and I attacked her although I was afraid of her reaction, and I would kill her except for the interfering of the soldiers. When the soldiers released me she showered me with hitting, then they left me.

After this incident, nobody harassed me for more than one month; I spent that period in the praying and invocation to Allah, the All-Mighty who has all power, to help me.

Mary came with some soldiers who gave me the clothes that I was wearing when they arrested me and took me to an American car. Then they threw me on the highway road after giving me 10,000 Iraqi Dinars.

I went to a home that was near the place where I have been thrown out and since I know the reaction of my family, I preferred to visit one of my relatives to let them know what happened after my absence. I knew that my brother had held a consolation board for me for more than 4 months, and they considered me as a dead person.

I understand the knife of shame is waiting for me. So, I went to Baghdad where I found a good family who lodged me, and I worked with this family as a maid and governess for their children.

Nadia wonders in pain, regret and bitterness:

"Who will quench my thirst? Who will return my virginity? What is the offense of my family and kin? I have inside me a baby, and I don't know who his father is."

ISLAM SHAPING A NEW EUROPE || In UK alone, 50,000 entering Islam every Year

New York, July 20th, 2008: In a recent interview with the BBC, British Home Secretary Jack Smith made some interesting observations about the rapid spread of Islam in Europe.

According to Smith, around 50,000 Britishers are converting to Islam each year and since 2001, four lakh Britishers have converted to Islam. He said the Muslim population in Britain has reached 20 lakh and followers of Islam are now the second

biggest population in Britain after Christians. He even suggested setting up an Islamic University in Britain given the overwhelming population of the Muslims in that country.

The momentum and intensity with which Islam is spreading in the West has puzzled the policy makers, religious scholars, researchers and media there. The conversions have especially gained unimaginable momentum after 9/11. Most of the researchers believe that the fast erosion of the religious and cultural values in the Western societies is pushing its people towards Islam that offers a more comprehensive, well-knit and value-oriented cultural, social and family structure.

According to a recent report in the prestigious Time magazine, hundreds of new mosques are coming up in the West and most of the European cities now get to hear Azan (call for prayer) five times a day. In Rome a grand mosque is coming up at a whopping cost of $3 crore for which the land has been donated by the local government.

According to Dr Mehmood Siddiqi Saidi, Director, European Muslim Minority Board, while as per a recent UN report the Muslim population in Europe is 21 million, in actual it could be around 50 million. As per the data available at islamicpopulation.com, in 2006 the Muslim population in Europe, including Russia, was around 50.70 million.

With the increase in Muslim population in Europe, the number of mosques and Islamic centers is also growing speedily. While in Britain there were only 13 mosques in 1963, at present there are 600 mosques and 1400 Islamic organizations in the country.

France, with a population of 60 lakh Muslims, has 1300 mosques and Islamic centers in addition to around 600 Islamic organizations. The Muslims in France have a 24-hour radio channel. The estimated population of Muslims in France would reach around 80 lakh during the next 15 years.

Italy has a population of 10 lakh Muslims with 450 mosques and Islamic centers. According to reputed Italian magazine The Journal, in next 200 years the European society would almost entirely accept Islam as the only religion.

Germany has a Muslim population of 40 lakh with 1400 mosques and Islamic centers. The Muslim population ration in Germany is around 4 per cent. In Canada the conversion rate to Islam has been almost 130 percent between 1991 and 2001. In Switzerland around 6000 Christians converted to Islam after 9/11.

According to San Diego University researcher Jan Wax, by 2020, out of every four persons in Europe, one would be a Muslim. The ratio of Muslim youth (between 45 and 50% of the Muslims) to EU youth is between 16 and 20%. In other words, in a few years Muslims will constitute 16 to 20% of the European workforce, and could therefore influence policies and decision-making.

Albania has proportionally the largest Muslim population in all of Europe, with the exception of Turkey, which is situated at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. According to the most recent census results, Albania’s Muslim population is estimated at 2.2 million, or 70% of the country’s total population. Although Albania was officially an atheist society during the Communist period, and all public expression of religious beliefs was banned, today most Albanians are practicing Muslims.

Following Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina has proportionally the second largest Muslim population in Europe, with 40% of Bosnians, or 1.5 million people, who practice Islam.

In Western Europe, France is followed by the Netherlands, which has over 945,000 Muslims, making up 5% of the population.

ISLAMIC FINANCIAL SYSTEM GIVES THE SOLUTION FOR ECONOMY CRISIS

The collapse of leading Wall Street institutions, notably Lehman Brothers and the subsequent global financial crisis and economic recession, are pushing economists world-wide to consider other alternative financial solutions by leaving interest based economy method which is a failure for global economy.

Attention has been focused on Islamic banking and finance as an alternative model. What lessons can be learnt, and how resilient have Islamic banks been during the current crisis?

Islamic Banking Principles And Sub-prime Lending

The religious teaching underpinning Islamic finance is concerned with justice in financial contracts to ensure that none of the parties is being exploited.

Riba( interest or usury) is one source of exploitation, especially, as in the case of sub-prime lending, the highest rates were charged to lower earners. Such discriminatory charging by conventional banks was justified as being a reflection of the risks involved. Those on lower incomes, with poorer prospects of finding new employment in the event of redundancy, were less likelyto be able to service their interest payments.

Islamic housing finance involves risk sharing between the bank and the client, rather than transferring all the risk to the latter. Under the most commonly used diminishing musharaka(partnership) contract, the bank and the client form a partnership, with the bank providing up to 90 percent of the purchase price, and the client at least 10 percent.

Over a period of usually 10 to 25 years, the client buys out the ownership share of the bank which makes its profit from the rent paid by the client for the share the bank owns.

In the event of a rental or repayments default, the bank may advance the clients an interest-free loan (qard hassan in Arabic) to enable them to continue their payments during the recession in anticipation that they will pay in full when the economy rebounds.

The client retains their home rather than being faced with eviction— like the victims of the sub-prime crisis.

Of course Islamic banks have to appraise credit risk, and indeed are more cautious about who they should finance than conventional banks.

The banks in the United States charged high arrangement fees for sub-prime borrowers which were used to pay bonuses for those signing up new clients. As the mortgages were sold on to Freddie Mac and Fanny Mae, the arrangers were unconcerned that the sub-prime borrowers might be unable to meet their financial obligations. Indeed, gifts were provided to entice the feckless to sign up, and the mortgages often exceeded the value of the property. The banks in other words became mere booking agents, with no long term commitment to their clients.

The Islamic Banking Record

In contrast to conventional banks, no Islamic bank has failed and has needed government recapitalization which ultimately becomes a burden on hard pressed taxpayers.

All Islamic banks comply with the Basel II capital adequacy requirements and the Islamic Financial Services Board (IFSB)- the body which advises regulators with respect to Islamic finance- has produced de

tailed guidelines on compliance. The IFSB has an on-going relationship with the Bank for International Settlements- the institution which developed the Basel standards- and is certain to be consulted as Basel III guidelines are drafted for capital adequacy which are likely to be implemented globally in the coming decade.

The soundness of Islamic banks is accounted for by the fact that they use a classical banking model, with financing derived from deposits, rather than being funded by borrowings from wholesale markets.

Consequently when the credit crunch came and borrowing from wholesale markets was halted, Islamic banks were not exposed. However, Islamic banks are not immune from the effects of the global recession, and the fall in oil prices will inevitably have a negative impact on 2008 results of Gulf-based Islamic banks. The situation will become clearer from February once the audited financial statements start to appear.

Two Islamic housing financial institutions, Amlak and Tamweel are being merged, as both have faced problems given their exposure to the Dubai property market.

In Iran where all financial operations have been shariah-based since the Law on Usury Free Banking was introduced in 1983, banks have been relatively insulated from the financial crisis, ironically because United States sanctions meant they could not deal with institutions such as Lehman Brothers which were trying to place large amounts of toxic debt with Middle Eastern banks.

The sanctions therefore proved to be a blessing in disguise for Iran— although the Islamic banks there have been adversely affected recently by the fall in gas prices. Nevertheless being state owned, institutions such as Bank Melli, the largest Islamic bank in the world, are well placed to ride out the global financial storm. With assets of over $50 billion, and 2007 profits exceeding $540 million, it has more than adequate resources to cope.

Islamic Financial Stability

Islamic banks enjoy a built-in stabilizer to help them cope with economic downturns, as instead of paying interest to depositors, those with investment mudaraba accounts share in the banks profits.

Thus, if profitability declines in an economic downturn, depositors receive lower returns, but if profits rise they enjoy higher returns.

This profit sharing reduces risk for the banks and means they are less likely to become insolvent. However as the banks build up a profit equalization reserve, which can be used to finance pay-outs during difficult years, depositors benefit from some protection of their returns during economic downturns.

The last year has been difficult, if not disastrous, for equity investors, given the fall in stock market prices globally.

Investors in equities screened for shariah compliance have also suffered, but less than their conventional counterparts, because they have not invested in the shares of riba-based banks which have fared especially badly during the global financial turmoil.

Investors seeking Shariah compliance have portfolios which are more heavily weighted in sectors such as healthcare or utilities where revenue streams are maintained even during cyclical down-turns.

Prospects for Islamic Finance

Islamic banking provides a viable alternative to conventional banking and is less cycle prone. The spread of Islamic finance into western markets demonstrates that it now being treated seriously by regulators and finance ministries.

There are already five wholly Islamic banks in London, and the first Islamic bank will open in France in 2009. According to the conservative estimates of the Banker in October 2008, Islamic financial assets globally exceed $500 billion, a figure that could easily double over the coming decade.

The experience of Islamic banking in the United Kingdom has been extremely positive. Islamic Bank of Britain has been operating as a retail bank for over four years, and has attracted over 40,000 customers. HSBC Amanah, the Islamic finance subsidiary of HSBC, has been operating for ten years in London, focusing mainly on institutional clients and business finance.

Alburaq, the Islamic finance subsidiary of Arab Banking Corporation, has become the market leader for shariah compliant home finance in the United Kingdom. None of these institutions has been affected by the global financial crisis, and their resilience bodes well for the future.

Sukuk Are Real Assets

In addition to banking, Islamic sukuk security issuance has enormous potential. Unlike conventional bonds and notes, sukuk are backed by real assets, which provides assurance to investors.

Although global sukuk markets were adversely affected by the global recession in 2008, longer term prospects look promising, with the United Kingdom authorities promoting London as an international centre for sukuk issuance to rival Bahrain, Dubai and Kuala Lumpur.

The Malaysian ringgit sukuk market has been largely unaffected by the global turmoil in securities markets, and issuers such as the Saudi Arabia Basic Industries Corporation, one of the world’s largest petrochemical producers, view sukuk as a desirable instruments to raise funding for plant expansion.

There can be no doubt that Islamic finance has an exciting future, and the quest for a financial system based on moral values rather than greed and fear, is bound to enhance its position in the global system.

Woman blinded by Acid wants ISLAMIC SHARIA LAW " EYE FOR AN EYE "

Ameneh Bahrami is certain that one day she'll meet someone, fall in love and get married. But when her wedding day comes, her husband won't see her eyes, and she won't see her husband. Bahrami is blind, the victim of an acid attack by a spurned suitor.

If she gets her way, her attacker will suffer the same fate. The 31-year-old Iranian is demanding the SHARIA punishment of "an eye for an eye," and, in accordance with Islamic law, she wants to blind Majid Movahedi, the man who blinded her.

"I don't want to blind him for revenge," Bahrami said in her parents' Tehran apartment. "I'm doing this to prevent it from happening to someone else."

Bahrami says she first crossed paths with Movahedi in 2002, when they attended the same university, She was a 24-year-old electronics student. He was 19. She never noticed him until they shared a class. He sat next to her one day and brushed up against her. Bahrami says she knew it wasn't an accident.

"I moved away from him," she said, "but he brushed up against me again."

When Bahrami stood up in class and screamed for him to stop, Movahedi just looked at her in stunned silence. He wouldn't stay silent for long.

Bahrami said that over the next two years, Movahedi kept harassing her and making threats, even as he asked her to marry him. "He told me he would kill me. He said, 'You have to say yes.' "

On a November afternoon in 2004, Movahedi's threats turned to violence, that day at 4:30 p.m., Bahrami left the medical engineering company where she worked. As she walked to the bus stop, she remembers sensing someone behind her. She turned around and was startled to see Movahedi. A moment later came the agonizing pain. Movahedi had thrown something over her. What felt like fire on her face was acid searing through her skin.

"I was just yelling, 'I'm burning! I'm burning! For God's sake, somebody help me!' "

The acid seeped into Bahrami's eyes and streamed down her face and into her mouth. When she covered her face with her hands, streaks of acid ran down her fingers and onto her forearms.

Two weeks after the attack, Movahedi turned himself in to police and confessed in court. He was convicted in 2005 and has been behind bars all along.

Bahrami's lawyer, Ali Sarrafi, said Movahedi had never shown any remorse. "He says he did it because he loved her," Sarrafi said.

Attack victims in Iran usually accept "blood money": a fine in lieu of harsh punishment. With no insurance and mounting medical bills, Bahrami could've used the cash, but she said no.

"I told the judge I want an eye for an eye," Bahrami said. "People like him should be made to feel my suffering." Implementing the Islamic law ( SHARIA LAW)

Bahrami's demand has outraged some human rights activists. Criticizing acid-attack victims is almost unheard of, but some Internet bloggers have condemned Bahrami's decision.

"We cannot condone such cruel punishment," wrote one blogger. "To willingly inflict the same treatment on a person under court order is a violation of human rights."

Late last year, an Iranian court gave Bahrami what she asked for. It sentenced Movahedi to be blinded with drops of acid in each eye. This month, the courts rejected Movahedi's appeal.

Bahrami's lawyer, Sarrafi, said the sentencing might be carried out in a matter of weeks. He said he doesn't think Bahrami will change her mind. Neither does Bahrami.

"If I don't do this and there is another acid attack, I will never forgive myself for as long as I live," she said.

Bahrami is largely self-sufficient despite not being able to see. She can make a salad, prepare tea and walk up the five flights of stairs that lead to her parents' apartment.

She has undergone more than a dozen surgeries on her badly scarred face, but she says there are many more to come. She can't afford to pay for her medical care, so she's using the Internet to raise money.

She's lost her big brown eyes, but she likes to smile, especially when she imagines her wedding day.

"I always see myself as someone who can see and sometimes see myself in a beautiful wedding gown, and why not?"
