Numberlab started with a hockey scrimmage outside The Standard Hotel and then continued inside on the 3rd floor. There was a total of twenty-two looks and each one was better than the next. From perfectly tailored blazers, to electric green jeans, Numberlab truly designed for the well dressed, hip young men of today. Later in the evening was the Red Dress Collection at Lincoln Center – the first show at the tents. Each year the top designers create a red dress and they pair it with a celebrity. This year such celebrities were spotted on the runway including Dita Von Teese (wearing Zac Posen), Taraji P. Henson (Naeem Khan), “Today Show” host Ann Curry, singer Natasha Bedinfield, singer Eve, professional dancer Julianna Hough, and reality star Audrina Patridge – to name a few. Each gown was gorgeous, fit the star to a “T” and more importantly raised awareness of women’s heart disease. A great way to start a crazy week of shows

But there is one ritual that everyone must do and hate doing it. This would be SHAVING! From the time my mother showed me how to use a razor to now it is something I always hated the results of. My legs always became irritated and I never felt they were completely smooth. And obviously I am not a guy but from what my guy friends and family members say they always have some kind of issue with shaving their beard. For those of you that read our last issue (IF YOU HAVEN'T PLEASE GO ONLINE) writer Patrick Joseph wrote Solving The Shave for men. This blog is for the ladies! I am here to tell you about these amazing products that were recommended to me by The Fashion Journal's very own Media and Talent Director Shane Terenzi. So I decided to go check it out at The Art Of Shaving. To my surprise I found out that they also carried women's products. Being a sucker to beauty products I purchased them. I started out with the shaving cream and pre-shave oil, this was $$$ enough. One shave and I was hooked. My legs never felt so good, the products were amazing. The pre-shave oil actually softened the hair and all you needed was a drop of the shaving cream to get the perfect shave. There was one product left to try out and that was the after-shave body milk. So yet again the sucker went back and bought it. And sure enough it was good too. What was nice about the body milk was it did not clog your pores or sting. Oh and I forgot to add how nice they smelled. That fresh clean feeling without being too strong.

I have been spreading the news ever since. Just when I found the perfect shaving cream my friend told me they will be discontinuing the women's line. So I had to investigate! Apparently it wasn't a big seller, not because women didn't like it but they didn't know it existed. The good news is that the only difference between the men and women's line is really the scent. Women are replacing the women's products with the lavender scented men's products.

So if you are looking for the perfect shaving products check out The Art of Shaving. All their products are sold online or you can go to a store near you, they have multiple locations. If you go now you still can buy the women's line, while supplies last.

Hope you enjoy!

http://www.theartofshaving.com/

Sometimes the reviews are amazing, other times, not so much, so what is your opinion on Armani Prive’s Spring 2011 collection showing yesterday in

Paris? With Sophia Loren, Olivia Wilde, and Jodi Foster sitting front row – the

collection began with a bold and shimmery jacket, skirt and leggings combination. The unique fabric and color looked

like liquid mercury flowing down the runway. I did the makeup for the "Beach Daze" editorial and am the Talent and Media Director for the magazine, so the cover shoot and Men preview I put together with the celebrities. It was so much fun and the issue looks so great! Let me know what you all think!!! Go check it out!

www.thefashionjournal.com

I love the good weather because it makes everyone so much happier! As the spring and summer are approaching I never think it is too early to start adding a little color to your face- this makes a real suntan not as shocking from your pasty winter skin. The easiest way to do this is adding a touch of bronzer to your everyday makeup – I am not talking about Snookie from the Jersey Shore amount of bronzer (and fake tanning) but just a little to start warming up your face.

My three top bronzers I use vary in price but achieve the same result.

The first bronzer that I had ever tried was Cargo’s Medium Bronzer. Obviously you would pick the shade that best fits your skin tone, but with using any shade, this is a great product. It goes on light, but layers nicely with other foundations and tinted moisturizers. Sometimes with a thick heavy product, you load up your brush and where you place it on your cheek, the product places and does not move or blend well – this is not the case with Cargo’s. It is relatively inexpensive as bronzers go and online at their website you can get it for $25.00

MAC’s Mineralize Skinfinish Natural Powder isn’t technically a “bronzer” but I have used it as one. This is perfect if you don’t want to add definition to your cheeks or T-Zone, but just want an overall darker feel. I use a “Handy Buki” brush (at Bare Essentials for $20) and with not attention to detail apply it all over the face. It adds a nice, darker shade to your face without making it look un-natural. This product lists for $28.00

The final bronzer I recommend is a new product to me, but I am already in love with it. It is from Estee Lauder and is called the Bronze Goddess Exotic Bronzing Blush. This is a combination bronzer and blush (will work well for skin tones that have a little red in them). This bronzer is great to apply on your cheekbones and a dash on your T-Zone to tie it all in. I would not use this all over you face as you can the MAC one. This product is such a great addition to their line as it combines two products in one. A lot of women don’t know if they can wear bronzer and blush, and if they want to, do not know how to apply it. This product is both. As I said, apply it like a blush and it will warm and darken your face up to a great sun kissed look! This product is listed at $35.00

Hope this helps and let me know if there are any products you would like recommendations on! Enjoy the nice weather!

Follow me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/sterenzi_makeup

Photo Credits: Company Websites of Each Product

I totally understand that people don’t have forty-five minutes to do a smoky eye with eyeliner, a smashing bold lip, and full foundation. It is just not realistic. So, I came up with a couple quick makeup tips and products that can help you have a complete look with only spending less than 5 minutes on your makeup!

The first is eye shadow. Sometimes it is fun to spend time coming up with cool color combinations but when you’re late running out the door, you just want to throw on something. Use Urban Decay’s Eye Shadow Primer Potion. If you buy it in Champagne you can put a little on and it gives your eyes a nice shimmer to them. It will dry and not crease which is always nice not to worry about. Once you have the primer, you can also use this before putting on your normal eye shadow and it should make it last longer and also, not crease.

The mascara that I use and swear by is Benefit’s BAD gal Lash. It has a great consistency, does not clump, and does what you want from mascara. The thing that I like about BAD gal is that it lasts. If you put it on before going out for the night, you will not need to go the bathroom to reapply or de-clump your lashes.

Another great, easy thing to do to complete a look is using Smashbox’s O-Gloss. It is the coolest gloss out there. What happens is that you put the gloss on as usual, but then it changes to your lip color and brings a more reddish-pink color to it. It is different for each person (obviously because everyone’s coloring is different) but really creates a nice effect. I was on a photo shoot awhile ago, and after the shoot the model took off all the makeup because she was going to another casting, and whips out O-Gloss and puts it on. In like 2 minutes she turned around, and I was like, “I thought you took off your makeup?” She then told me about O-Gloss and since then I have loved it.

So those are just three really awesome products that make getting ready simple and quick. The new cover of London’s Harper’s Bazaar featuring Megan Fox is absolutely stunning. Unfortunately, when you look more into the cover, you find out that it is not all Megan Fox. Widely know, Fox has a “toe thumb”- where her thumb is shorter and resembles a toe, not a finger. Many people have this, not a deformity, just a characteristic. On the cover though, photo shopped is a “normal” thumb from a hand model. I guess my concern is why do you need to do that? Megan Fox is undisputedly sexy. Her thumb is not the first thing any guy or girl looks at when they look at her.

I think this problem of photo shopping has dominated our society and increasingly is taking more and more of a presence. As a makeup artist, I understand wanting your work to look the best it can be. I also do not want my work to not be relevant any more. If someone at a computer can sit there and photo shop makeup on the model, give her a hair style, and take out any imperfection, what then becomes my role as an artist. The only people needed in a photo shoot would be the model and photographer- not the art director, makeup artist, hair stylist, stylist, or manicurist.

Some of the covers that I have had a problem with recently include Tina Fey on Vogue and Demi Moore on W. Tina Fey its less of a problem than think that what they photo shopped could have been avoided. Fey has had a scar on her cheek since her childhood, received from a stranger slashing her face at age 5 in her front lawn. I don’t understand why they had to use that side of her face, if there is a scar on it and you don’t want to show it, shoot the other side! On W Magazine, it was blatant that Demi Moore’s hips were corrected, but corrected poorly. There is a chunk missing out of one. When asked about this, W Magazine denied it saying they did no altering of the photo. It is a professional standard now to send the photos to post production and do corrections- so don’t deny it.

In conclusion- I know that photo shop is needed. There is a level of standard that people expect from a cover. I understand smoothing of skin, correcting bumpy eyeliner, or whitening teeth. But- when you change someone drastically- especially when they are a famous personality – we will notice the obvious changes. Photo shop is to enhance a photo, not change it. Lets make the people that we show across all forms of entertainment, real not fake.

Follow me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/sterenzi_makeup

It always surprises me when a celebrity does such avant-garde makeup for something so widely distributed as this magazine. Her makeup in this shot was a combination of clown and mime makeup- a white foundation, bold red lip and her eye’s had a blue cat eye shape to them. You do not see her hair at all as its pulled back with a black headband. The other pictures from the shoot were highly artistic as well. My favorite was the very ice-y blue picture. Her hair is very relaxed, looked as if it was just brushed out. Her makeup was simple, a nice comparison to the first shot, using a nude/pink lip and stone light blue eye shadow.

In the article, Moore talks a lot about her role in “A Single Man”, the Tom Ford movie that starred Collin

Firth. Also, she talks about her natural hair color, red. This is the question and answer:

“Maybe it’s your hair color. At the beginning of your career, did anyone suggest you dye your natural red hair blond, as, say, Nicole Kidman did?”

“No. [Laughs.] Although my very first director told me that if you have red hair, somebody is casting you for a reason. He said, “There will be parts that you don’t get because, especially onstage, people can see you.” I’ve been wigged plenty of times, but the funny thing is that even when I have a different hair color, people tend to still remember me as having red hair.”

Congrats, Julianne! The issue looks amazing and so does every shot of her.

For a similar look to Moore’s, try Dior Five-Color eye shadow in Night Dust and One-Color eye shadow in Crystal white and Lancôme Color Design Lipstick in Red Stiletto. For the Ice-y blue look, try Dior Addict Lipcolor in Undressed Pink and Dior Blush in A Touch of Blush.

Follow me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/sterenzi_makeup

From “The Tent”, to the parties, to the lines, and the schedule of shows – it all was very overwhelming. I have to say how much I loved it though. When I think of what a fashion show is, I think of the stereotypes: skinny models, techno music, gorgeous clothes, etc. And what Fashion Week is, are the stereotypes and more. The atmosphere of when the lights change from the seating lighting to show lighting, or when the gorgeous “wow” piece comes out and you hear everyone around you gasp, or even, the thrill of seeing your favorite model or designer walk the runway, it was all so much fun.

I saw a total of 10 shows that included Tim Hamilton Redux Men, Frank Tell, Cynthia Rowley, Althea Harper, Vaute Couture, Araks show, Toni Maticevski, Ecliptica, Edition by Georges Chakra, and The Red Dress Collection. Wow! No two shows were similar and the point of view of the designers varied so much- some felt like they were showing spring/summer collections and others felt that they were depressed in the dead of winter.

Outside of the shows that I got to see, The Fashion Journal threw its Winter 2010 issue launch party on Tuesday night at HK Lounge. The event went so well with a packed party, celebrities, and friends to celebrate the issue. We put a lot of work into the party with finding over 20 sponsors, making amazing gift bags, and most importantly, getting the word out about the magazine. I think after this Fashion Week, we are on a roll and need to keep going with it. Carol Hannah Whitfield from Project Runway was our guest of honor as she was our cover model and seemed really happy with the event. She brought fellow Project Runway friends including Logan, Epperson, and Althea. Kristin Alderson from One Life To Live was also sweet enough to stop in for a bit.

So overall, very excited, feel like there is momentum that I want to keep going with, and feel relieved I got through my first Fashion Week. So my two big goals by the next fashion week: hopefully have signed with an agent or successfully teamed up to be someone’s personal makeup artist and have two more successful issues of TFJ published.

I just sat for the Edition Collection by Georges Chakra at the Promenade Tent, and the show was great. It was a massive collection of forty-two listed looks with several of them being separates. The overall theme of the collection was tailored and structured. He took masculine ideas and made them feminine. On every look that he had, he played with the back of the dress. Sometimes their were cut outs, in other looks there were specific detailing, etc.

The stand out piece for me was his one shoulder gold lame gown with a beaded butterfly detail on the back. This gown when the model turned for her walk just struck the audience. I could see this immediately on the red carpet for the Oscars. What I like about Chakra is that his clothes are wearable. They are sophisticated, elegant, and look expensive, but simple. Nothing outrageous to draw attention, the attention is drawn because of the subtleties. Another theme in his collection was the tuxedo jacket. Of course the tuxedo jacket has been done before, but Chakra played with it. Usually worn backwards, the jackets neckline created a plunging back V that became very sexy. He had one dress that was a fun black crepe reversed tuxedo cocktail dress. For more of an evening look had a mink silk faille reversed tuxedo gown. So, he played with the orientation of the jacket, the length, the fabric, etc. It really worked in his collection.

The only complaint I had was the middle section of his show where his looks all had this Chantilly lace overlay. Although the lace itself was gorgeous, he used either too much of it in the case of his black gabardine strapless cocktail dress but then layered it in a longer version of Chantilly lace. It was unnecessary and distracted the viewer from the actual cocktail dress.

Overall- a gorgeous collection that will do very well in FW 2010. I haven’t paid much attention to Chakra before this and now will be looking to see what he will be doing in future collections.

I know I was completely spoiled by The Fashion Journal and the show that I got to see was The Red Dress Collection 2010. To those who do not know what that is- The Heart Truth organization celebrates the designers and celebrities who help bring the Red Dress symbol to life in this annual event to raise awareness of women’s heart disease. Tonight, the celebrities and designers that were featured were: Bethenny Frankel in Isabella Oliver, Elisabeth Hasselbeck in Donna Karan, Felicity Huffman in Oscar de la Renta, Dara Torres in Rachel Roy, Estelle in Zac Posen, Heidi Klum in John Galliano, Joan Collins in Stephane Rolland, Jordin Sparks in Badgley Mischka, Kim Kardashian in Marchesa, Kimora Lee in Kouture by Kimora, Kristin Chenoweth in Daniel Swarovski, Mamie Gummer in Michael Kors, Pauley Perrette in Rebecca Taylor, Raven-Symone in Tadashi Shoji, Regina King in Tracy Reese, Robin Roberts in J. Crew Collection, and Valerie Harper in Pamella Roland. It's a long list of celebrities in an equally as long and desirable list of designers.

So for my favorites…my top three would be Heidi Klum, Felicity Huffman, and Jordin Sparks. Heidi Klum was in a simple John Galliano. It has a clean elegance that looked like you could wear it on a red carpet (no pun intended J) or casually at dinner. Klum doesn’t need something over the top, if she is wearing your clothes, she will make it look fantastic. Felicity Huffman was in an outstanding Oscar de la Renta. It was so clearly Oscar de la Renta, too. With immaculate fit on the torso to a gorgeous full gown on the bottom, Huffman had grace, style, and fun all in the same dress. For my all time favorite, and maybe because I am a fan of her, but Jordin Sparks rocked her Badgley Mischka dress tonight. This dress had a great fit, moved well on the runway, and was totally age appropriate. It was refreshing to see Jordin and Raven-Symone on the runway, representing real women. Especially since that is what this event wants to provoke awareness to, women around the world.

Tonight was amazing in my book. This show varied so much in design and was so interesting comparing designers side by side. You had Michael Kors next to Oscar de la Renta, next to Rebecca Taylor. What a great show. Maticevski used a lot of light and sheer fabrics, surprisingly for a fall/winter collection. He played with a lot of asymmetry and broke down a lot of the pieces. His opening piece, a silk tulle and organza skirt with Silk sunray pleat overlay, was something out of a snow princesses wardrobe. It moved very well and the silhouette was new and interesting. I think that his overall collection flowed very well with some stand out pieces that drew the attention from the white and muted color palette. An example of this was his thirteenth look- a polka dot chiffon top with sequin silk drape skirt, or his eleventh look- an old gold satin drape bias top with pencil leg stripe pant and crop boot. This look was trendy, wearable, and season appropriate. One look that I did not like was his twentieth look- a one shoulder black tube dress with sleeve detail and black boots. This look looked like it was a Jersey girl going to a club and she somehow got pushed onto the runway. It took down the overall class of the collection and did not seem coherent. I really enjoyed his work. He puts a lot of detailing into his pieces which makes the individual look very expensive and like its one of a kind.

It was a lot of work but so much fun. I had the opportunity to do makeup for such inspirational women that have had to go through such challenging obstacles. The Red Dress Awards were created 7 years ago to honor those who are leading the fight against heart disease, the number one killer of women. To listen to some of the stories these women told was truly humbling. I am so proud to be a part of this event.

The makeup for the evening was all about a bolder eye than lip. I got to have a little more fun with the makeup for Anna Trebunskaya, from Dancing With The Stars. When she walked in she knew exactly what she wanted - a clean eye that stood out and a red gloss lip. It is so helpful for a makeup artist to know what the client wants - I took what she said and then applied my design with what I thought would make her look the best. She looked great! For her eye, I started with a brownish gold on the outer edge and worked my way in. Taking a pinkish skin tone color, blended the brown into the pink so at the bridge of her nose, it was the lightest. To add a little accent of reddish/orange to the eye to tie it in with the dress, I did a light dusting of an orange eye shadow over the brown. I finished off the eye with a pair of false lashes and a black eye liner.

At the after party of the event, I got a little dose of this season of Project Runway. First of all, I was able to talk to Ping Wu, a designer from this season. Ping talked about the challenges of Project Runway stating how with such design restrictions (aka making a dress out of a potato sack for instance) is not the way she designs, she is very organic from within. Also, Ping is going to show in the final level of a competition at arts fair in Baltimore at the end of February. I also go to see the dress that won last weeks challenge on the television show (to be featured at The Red Dress Awards last night). It was absolutely stunning. Amy Sarabi, the designer, commented on that it was a very hard challenge for two reasons, one they had to make the dress fit a real women, not a model and secondly they were effecting someone with there dress. This dress was for a woman that has been tragically affected by Heart Disease and she wanted to make her happy to be in the outfit.

Throughout the night, I saw these amazing women, with such inspirational stories of how they overcome such a devastating disease, reaching out and spreading the word. There was happiness, tears, and every emotion in between but the overlaying emotion was gratefulness; from the celebrities that were able to be a part of the event, to the women that overcame such a large hurtle in their lives.
The Fashion Journal is a quarterly fashion publication dedicated to showcasing emerging designers in the realm of fashion, art, photography, beauty, accessories, etc. Since November I worked on three separate stories for their Winter 2010 Issue. It has been so much work but has been so rewarding. This morning I was checking emails and going to my websites I always check, and when I clicked on The Fashion Journal’s website, I saw the cover of the issue I have been working on! It was so cool to see my work on such a professional site…I felt so proud!

The three stories that I was a part of in this issue was the cover story about Project Runway’s Carol Hannah Whitfield, The American Women fashion editorial, and the Beauty editorial spread. It is so interesting that each of these shoots felt so different, even thought my role was relatively the same. For the cover story, my friend (and amazing makeup artist/ beauty editor of TFJ) Erica Maniscalco, asked me if she thought Carol Hannah might be interested in the idea of a little story on her. I was lucky enough to do Carol Hannah’s makeup for The Emmy’s, so I said I could reach out to her and ask. Carol Hannah wrote back excited about the story and so we had that shoot in the planning stages. Before planning these shoots with Erica, I always thought that there was little to do in the way of planning for a photo shoot. I quickly learned I was soooo wrong! We luckily had the great opportunity to work with photographer Carsten Fleck and he has a studio in Brooklyn. The only thing left for this shoot was a stylist- and the amazing Sarah Shirley joined on the team. This shoot fell together quickly and, in comparison, was pretty easy.

The second story we worked on was The American Girl fashion editorial. Now this is the one in planning sounded fun and simple, but when we started getting the ball rolling, things came up that we had not expected. We held go-sees for models to come in to see if we could find someone that looked like the dolls we were pulling from inspiration. Even after we found two of the four models, we had to plan four separate location photo shoots in the month of December. Since it was a fashion story, we wanted the same photographer and stylist. Reaching out to one of the photographers both Erica and I have worked with before, Damian Sandone joined and through another connection Erica had, we got Rowshana Jackson and Jason Bui to style. The locations that we got for the shoots were so much fun. One of them was McSorley’s Bar in the East Village. Since it is a bar, and to not disrupt business, we were given the bar to shoot in from 1am-9am. The “Molly” shoot was in an incredible airplane hanger at the American Power Museum in Long Island. There were vintage planes all from WWII that we got to use as our backdrop. The third crazy location we shot at was on a beach off the Belt Parkway. Yes, a beach on January 2nd is very very cold and windy. We braved the weather and got amazing shots. The fourth and final shoot was in a studio; it kind of was a treat for the crew after the three previous shoots!

As a makeup artist who has just begun his career, today was a cool day to see my work published for the first time. I am so proud of the work we all accomplished and it gives me motivation for the future. I know I get down if I am not getting as much work as I would like or if a shoot doesn’t go exactly the way I had imagined but when something you work so hard on comes out better than the way you would have ever imagined you just want everyone to see it! So go check it out and let me know what you think!

Follow me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/sterenzi_makeup

Photo Credits: All Pictures- The Fashion Journal

They met in 2002 at The London College of Fashion and decided to collaborate on a collection for The Fashion Fringe competition. Their collection was picked as the best out of 1500 entries, and it is clear why. Full of innovation, creativity, and uniqueness, JENA.THEO celebrate women’s shape, sexual expression, and boldness in their designs. Their work blends a unique mix of Greek and British heritage to modern ideas and attitudes.

I had a chance to talk with JENA.THEO and when asked why this is the collection they put together, they said that obviously they had thousands of ideas but the pieces that ended up in the collection were the pieces that stood out to them- that really made a statement. Through reviewing the collection of about 20 pieces, some dresses, some separates, I saw the client being someone who wanted to feel that they were wearing the most up to date fashion, couture on some occasions, but that was still practical. They love playing with volume and exposure. There was this gorgeous dress that struck me. It had yards and yards of this amazing fine cashmere jersey. Another piece that I loved was a pair of high-wasted gray denim jeans. Using their idea of exposure, their were two cut outs on either hip that made this jean unique. There were several pairs of pants that were made of the cashmere jersey and full of fabric. I asked if she thought any type of women could wear this pant and she said that her friend that was 6’1’’ and a size 14 raves about how great and slimming the pants look on her. As Holmes said, “You don’t have to wear skinny jeans to feel skinny! That’s what we wanted to show.”

I am so excited to see what this designer duo have up their sleeves for their next autumn/winter collection scheduled to show at London Fashion Week on February 19th in the British Fashion Council Tents at Somerset House.

To check out their collection go to their website, jenatheocollection.com

Follow me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/sterenzi_makeup

Photo Credits: JENA.THEO Promotional, Personal Photos

We got to see stars like Taylor Swift walk the red carpet in a stunning Kaufman Franco glitzy gown to Rihanna taking more of a risk and wearing a gown from Elie Saab Haute Couture. Looking over the pictures I can see that a soft lip and bolder eye is making a mark on this award season. Beyonce looked flawless (as usual). Her eye shadow drew attention but wasn’t over board. Taking a highly pigmented black, she only shadowed until the natural crease of her eye. In doing this it made the shadow almost an extension of an eyeliner and accentuated the natural shape of her eye. Then with a light skin tone color, she applied from the inner corner of her eye and underneath as a drop shadow. This prevented the black from closing in her eyes and making them appear smaller than they are. It effectively offset the heaviness of the black. Miley Cyrus had a similar makeup look to Beyonce. Instead of the glossed natural lip color, she used a matte nude color that matched her skin tone very well. Her eyes were more of a smoky eye but again, only using the dark colors up to the natural crease and using a small amount of a dark drop shadow. Carrie Underwood and Marissa Miller took it just a little farther with a heavier drop shadow under the eye. This worked for both of them as Underwood had such big, piercing eyes, and Miller had such a light lip the attention to the eyes wasn’t in competition with anything else.

The other major trend I saw happens to be my favorite. The bold pink lip. I love the color pink and I love attention brought with an electric, fun color. Of course Lady Gaga draws attention with anything that she does, but her look for tonight’s red carpet was amazing. Her gown (and not your traditional gown) was designed by Armani and was truly a piece of art. Up to her makeup - she chose a dark eye with a fierce eyebrow and strong lip. This is a hard look to pull off and Gaga did it with ease. Jennifer Hudson’s look was simple. She rocked an all black Victoria Beckham dress, a bumped up natural eye and ended with the splash of color on her lips. I think the color pink on one’s lips just brings out such a personality of the women that wear it. Makeup is supposed to be fun and using a hot pink lipstick is so much fun!

To achieve the looks that the stars wore tonight all you have to do is get the products that they use! MAC Cosmetics have amazing “pigments” for eye shadows. Whenever I say to people that I am a makeup artist, the first question I always get is, “So tell me, what are the good products to use?” My answer to what foundation I use is Make Up For Ever’s HD Liquid Foundation ($40 ea). It is an oil-free medium-to-full-coverage liquid foundation that covers skin imperfections flawlessly while remaining invisible on-screen and in real life. The foundation creates a soft-focus effect, which is designed to meet the coverage concerns of those in the spotlight. It leaves your complexion with such a flawless finish; it can withstand bright or harsh lighting. It comes in 25 different shades to suit all skin tones. What is nice about this foundation is that it works well for me professionally in photo shoots and red carpet events but also, for the every day person, it translates well for in-person coverage. Specifically, I recommend this foundation, even if you don’t use foundation every day, for wedding makeup. As a bride you can request specific products for your artist to use but still listen to their professional opinion.

Stylecaster.com just recently interviewed my friend and business partner, Erica Maniscalco, on how to apply a “Flawless Liquid Foundation”. One show in particular was able to do that and have audiences entertained for four years straight. Created by Silvio Horta, Ugly Betty is about a kind, naïve, and strong girl from Queens, NY who knows nothing about fashion. After college she accepts a job at Mode Magazine, a trendy high fashion magazine in Manhattan. Her day-to-day life now is to deal with the fashion world and the people that dominate it. When I first watched the pilot with my roommate in LA, I was skeptical. The Devil Wears Prada had come out that year and I was scared it was going to be a bad rip-off. I was soon completely addicted to this amazing show. I could not wait for the next week’s episode to see what crazy situation Betty got herself into and see what visually stunning outfits they’d show. Unfortunately, yesterday Ugly Betty's executive producer Silvio Horta and ABC president Steve McPherson said in a joint statement: 'We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty's final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion.” This is a bad move on ABC’s part- the show had content, style, and entertainment all in one.

The reason I am writing this blog is because I wanted to talk about the fashion and style that Ugly Betty was all about. The two people that made Ugly Betty the fashion plate as it is are the

two costume designers, Eduardo Castro and Patricia Field (costume designer for Sex in the City). Saying those two names and fashion in a sentence is not new and is gives and understanding on why it has been nominated for numerous Emmy’s, CDG Awards, and many others. Castro and Field took NYC fashion and heightened it to almost a pop art level. The whole style of Mode Magazine was edgy but compatible. The accents that they would do were so detailed oriented it would be hard to notice but for some reason you knew everyone was connected. For instance Betty would be wearing some completely outlandish and ridiculous outfit with fuchsia and gold and then Daniel, Betty’s boss, would be wearing a perfectly tailored navy blue suit, but with a lining of the jacket and pocket square in fuchsia. Castro and Field connected the characters and their relationships in their fashions. Wilhelmina Slater, the creative director at Mode and usually made to be the villainess, would be in contrasting colors to Daniel and Betty. It was really impressive how the designers took a chance on heightened reality and made it work.

I am sad to see the show be in its final season. I do hope though that other shows take notice of what Castro and Field have done. Sometimes they are not successful and fall into drugs, partying, and then, obscurity. Other times, as in the case of Anne Hathaway, you turn into a gorgeous, successful, talented woman. Her first real big splash on the screen was Disney’s Princess Diaries in which she played a socially awkward- but very bright- 15 year old who eventually is turned from drab to dream by her grandmother, played by Julie Andrews. Since then, Hathaway has stared in many amazing movies such as Brokeback Mountain, The Devil Wears Prada, and the highly anticipated, Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland.

Throughout Hathaway’s career, she has always been a style icon of classic beauty. That is not to say she has not taken risks, but somehow almost everything she wears, is absolutely perfect. Most recently she appeared at Giorgio Armani’s Armani Prive fashion show at Paris Fashion Week Haute Couture on Monday January 25 at Paris’ Palais de Chaillot where she wore a knee length cocktail dress. Her hair was up in a simple and classic up-do and he makeup was s light Smokey eye with natural glossed lips. Hathaway, a fan of Armani, wore a gorgeous gown last year to the 2009 Academy Awards - this time, more of a natural eye with a matte red lip. In

the fall, she wore a cute Marc Jacobs’ cocktail dress to the Empire State Pride Agenda Fall Dinner. This time her makeup was a combination of the two previously mentioned, a Smokey eye, thick glamour eyeliner, and a pinkish red glossed lip. Her hair was down and straight.

Hathaway takes her classic natural look and wears dresses that accentuate her flawless body. She always has perfect makeup; usually a red or pink lip and her eyes are accentuated with glamour eyeliner. I am excited to see her at this years Academy Awards. My prediction- she will be wearing another Armani Prive gown from this years line.

Make sure you follow me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/sterenzi_makeup

Photo Credits: Armani Prive Fashion Show '10 & Empire State Dinner- JustJared.com, Oscars '09- starpulse.com

Overall, I thought the effort in hair and makeup along with their choices in outfits, made the SAG Awards so much more glamorous than The Golden Globes just a week earlier. My three top picks were Kate Hudson, Diane Kruger, and Jane Krakowski. I have to admit, if you dress in old Hollywood glamour, and look good doing it, you will move to the top of my list.

I think that is what the red carpet is there for. It is a throw back to the movie premieres when Greta Garbo and Bette Davis would get all dolled up, the cameras were flashing, and these gorgeous women would strut their stuff. That is why I loved these three women last night. Kate Hudson took the more modern twist of old Hollywood. In her floor length gown designed by Emilio Pucci, she walked the carpet with elegance and style. Her hair was pulled back and up in a loose low bun and her makeup was simple and clean. This is the second gown in just two award shows that she has decided to wear a white gown; I am interested in seeing her next choice.

Jane Krakowski rocked the red carpet in her Alberta Feretti gown. I absolutely loved Krakowski’s hair and makeup last night. She drew attention to her eyes while still making her lips pop. The classic red lip is so perfect for a night like the SAG Awards. Her hair had a side part and curls Marilyn Monroe would become jealous of. Her overall look was just spot on.

My overall favorite was Diane Kruger in her Jason Wu gown. The fit of the gown was perfect and had the movement and grace a gown for this event should. More important than her gown was her stunning hair and makeup. Simply put, it was beautiful. Her eyes were done very naturally, a light taupe eyes shadow with a hint of warm red or orange. The lips were done with a matte red that matched perfectly with her accessories. It drew it all in. Her hair was in a low ponytail with subtle waves in it (almost that it had 1930’s finger waves in it the night before). It was the classic old Hollywood I love.

I was really impressed last night with everyone’s look. The cast of Glee was no exception and some of the classic go-to for fashion perfection took some chances that I appreciated (Marion Cotillard). I can’t wait to see the next red carpet.

Make sure to follow me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/sterenzi_makeup

Photo Credits: Hudson- Huffington Post, Krakowski- wireimage, Kruger- justjared.com

I pulled a bunch of them into a folder, looked on the web for more, but when I reviewed the photos that stood out to me of having professional, attractive makeup, a closer look revealed they all had on a similar style. I am not saying that this is bad by any means, just an interesting observation. Take a look at Kate Walsh at the premiere of "Legion" in Hollywood and Jennifer Lopez at the launch party for make-up artist Scott Barnes' book "About Face" in New York. Now of course they do not have on the exact same colors or even finish to their lips, but comparatively, their makeup compliments their own skins natural tones in the same way. With a dark eye as both of them have, it draws focus away from their other features and to their eyes. Walsh applied a classic Fashion Eyeliner (where the bottom eyeliner comes up and meets the top eyeliner). She accented this with a dark eye shadow on the outer edge of her eye transitioning into a lighter almost nude color towards the bridge of her nose. What this accomplishes is attention to the eye without closing in and making the eyes look smaller than they are. The attention she wanted was for her eyes and that was completely effective. Lopez accomplished the same goal of making her eyes the center focus but did it in a different way. Instead of doing the Fashion Eyeliner she did more of a Natural Eyeliner (where the liner ends in a wedge at the outer corner of the eye). With the increased thickness of the liner and the eye shadow being a dark dusting, focus was brought up to her eyes. Walsh and Lopez had several things that were the same in their makeup. In the eye shadow they started dark at the outer edge of the eye and transitioned into a lighter color at the nose. Their cheeks were a rose color without over doing it and they both finished with a nude or natural lip with a bit of gloss. Obviously both of these looks are red carpet ready and both brought out such natural beauty without looking over done.

Make sure you follow me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/sterenzi_makeup

The reason that I decided to begin blogging is to stay active and in-tune with my industry, the entertainment industry. It will make me be proactive and research the trends, analyze celebrities choices in makeup, try different products, and let you all in on how it is to try to make it as a celebrity makeup artist! I am excited to give you my perspective of what’s going on in Hollywood and NYC.

So who am I? My name is Shane Terenzi. Born and raised in Connecticut, I was always influenced in the arts. For college I decided to move across the country and attend college in Los Angeles, CA. Living there for five years I got to begin to see the city of money, fame, and excess. I worked for a production company that produced award shows and charity dinners where I was introduced to celebrity makeup. The celebrities that attended these events included Halle Berry, Natasha Bedingfield, and Kelly Clarkson, to name a few. The different styles that these women had were so unique and different from each other. Their makeup was not drastically different but their choices separated their looks completely.

Moving to NYC I began concentrating on my makeup career. I took intensive course studies of beauty, character, and airbrush makeup and studio hairstyling at The Makeup Designory in SoHo, NYC. After finishing my studies there, I quickly started developing clients in the print and editorial world as well as in the Hollywood community. I did two television pilots, one for B.E.T. and the other Adult Swim.

In September I took a month trip back to Los Angeles where I had the chance to work for Project Runway’s Carol Hannah Whitfield for the 2009 Primetime Emmy Awards. The next project I worked on was the 2009 Environmental Media Awards where my clients included The Devil Wears Prada's Simon Baker, Brother and Sister's Calista Flockhart and Emily Vancamp, and Glee's Diana Agrove. Coming back to NYC, my next clients included The Real Housewives of New Jersey. Needless to say, the fall was very successful.

In November I teamed up with Erica Maniscalco, a fabulous makeup artist, so that we could push and motivate each other. Erica became an editor for The Fashion Journal and brought me in on several projects for the February issue. The Fashion Journal is a quarterly fashion publication dedicated to showcasing emerging designers in the realm of fashion, art, photography, beauty, accessories, etc. It was great to work on a really creative fashion editorial and beauty shoot.

So, I guess that gets you caught up with me. I have recently begun my makeup career but have been fortunate to have some amazing opportunities. I am excited to talk about celebrity’s makeup, new products and keep you all up to date with my journey as a makeup artist.
