“If you see 23, you think about Michael Jordan,” James said, according to The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer. “You see game-winning shots, you think about Michael Jordan; you see guys fly through the air, you think about Michael Jordan; you see fly kicks, you think about Michael Jordan. He did so much, it has to be recognized, and not just by putting him in the Hall of Fame.”

LeBron would change to number 6, the number he wore in the Olympics. Apparently, he has until March 5th to change his number. If he does, will these players follow suit?

I think the NBA should retire 23. After all, he is the greatest player ever. The NHL did it with Wayne Gretzky. The MLB did it for Jackie Robinson. Now, the skeptic in me thinks that this could be a marketing ploy. After all, the number 6 jersey would go flying off the shelf. So, I bring it to you: Do you support the retiring of number 23?

“I’ve never been a person to share my private life. But I can help save lives,” he said in a midtown Manhattan conference room. “It’s incumbent on someone like me to talk about this.”

Abdul Jabbar doesn’t have to deal with this publicly. He should not have to. An illness like this should be dealt privately. Which is why I respect him so much more for doing this. He’s using his fame to help others. He’s using his fame to help others. My father had leukemia. Thankfully, he’s in remission. He has moved past that time. He’s as healthy as can be. I do wonder, however, how he would’ve reacted if he knew Kareem had leukemia. Would it inspire him to speak out, because a basketball legend is doing the same? I don’t know. I don’t know if I want to know. I do know that what Kareem is doing is special. Having to deal with leukemia is hard. Having Kareem by your side, even if it makes a little easier, can make all the difference. Good luck, Kareem. We’ll be rooting for you.

We are a nation that is dedicated to the proposition that all men and women are created equal. We live that truth within our military, and see it in the varied backgrounds of those we lay to rest today. We defend that truth at home and abroad, and we know that Americans will always be found on the side of liberty and equality. That is who we are as a people.

I’ve never been to war. I don’t plan on ever going into war, or even the Armed Services. I know veterans. I’ve met them in awe of all they’ve done, in awe of the sacrifices they have made. I have not, however, known anyone who has died in combat. I don’t ever want to know someone who has died in combat. But as an American, I know these 13 soldiers from Fort Hood. I feel the struggle. I feel the pain, even if they can’t feel it with me. I sense the sorrow of their family members, even if they can’t sense it with me.

We are a nation that endures because of the courage of those who defend it. We saw that valor in those who braved bullets here at Fort Hood, just as surely as we see it in those who signed up knowing that they would serve in harm’s way.

I’m not courageous enough to join the Armed Services. I’m not brave enough to risk my life for a greater good. I’m not strong enough, mentally, to deal with war. Which is why the sacrifices these people make are that much more awe-inspiring. They risked their lives for something greater than themselves. They risked their lives to help their neighbor, their friend, their country experience the waves of freedom though their hair, to live in a country free of tyranny. That’s what these soldiers did. They put their country in front of themselves. They put freedom in front of themselves.

For history is filled with heroes. You may remember the stories of a grandfather who marched across Europe; an uncle who fought in Vietnam; a sister who served in the Gulf. But as we honor the many generations who have served, I think all of us – every single American – must acknowledge that this generation has more than proved itself the equal of those who have come before.

Our generation has lived up to the precedents of the ones before us. After 9/11, we raced to become better people, better Americans. When the Afghanistan war started (whether you agree with it or not) countless brave American men and women joined the cause. When the Iraq war started (whether you agree with it or not) countless brave men and women joined the cause. They didnt sit back. They didn’t say “That’s not my problem.” They said, “This is our problem, this our moment to shine, and we cannot, we will not, back down.” That’s the legacy of our generation.

Long after they are laid to rest – when the fighting has finished, and our nation has endured; when today’s servicemen and women are veterans, and their children have grown – it will be said of this generation that they believed under the most trying of tests; that they persevered not just when it was easy, but when it was hard; and that they paid the price and bore the burden to secure this nation, and stood up for the values that live in the hearts of all free peoples.

Tomorrow is Veteran’s Day. I ask if you, even if you don’t know a veteran, to say thanks. To say a prayer for those still fighting. They made the ultimate sacrifice. The least we can do is thank them.

Pittsburgh has lost a lot of tough games this year, but they’re still the strong run, strong defense team. The Steelers are probably not as good as their Super Bowl team, but they are still good and still a threat.

This championship was a bit different. You see, I had a few more friends to enjoy the ride with. When I joined Twitter, I wasn’t expecting much. Maybe I would update a couple times a week. Nothing major. But, once baseball started, it became something much larger. A place for fans to congregate. A little family. There’s Rebecca, or Optimist Prime, the one who kept our heads above water, the one who made sure we didn’t go overboard. There’s Meg, whose rally bra had to account for at least 20 wins. There’s Donna, the family mom. There’s Andrew, who constantly second guessed Girardi, hated Posada, but his love for the team trumps all. There’s Mark Feinsand, Daily News beat writer, whose odds were for entertainment purposes only. There’s Marc Carig, who started the Roll Call. There’s Bryan Hoch, of MLB.com, who has never seen The Godfather. There’s Tyler KepnerSweeny Murti. And there’s Ross, our stadium insider.

I know I’m forgetting people. And I’m sorry for that. The weird thing is, I’ve never met these people. I probably never will. But, we are united under a common love, a love for baseball, a love for the Yankees. I shared this season with these guys. I shared the ups, I shared the downs. I shared a World Championship.

Baseball’s over. We’ll have to wait until April to see it again. But, this title will be one I’ll always cherish. Not because of the win. But because of the people I shared it with.

So guess what? Some good economic news! The GDP rose 3.5% in the third quarter! This is great news. It also means, technically, the recession is over. A recession is when the GDP declines for a certain period of time. When it rises, technically, we’re out of it. Of course, people looking for jobs are not going to find this news encouraging. Until the unemployment rate is to an acceptable number, we’re still in a recession. But technically, we’re out of it. Woohoo!!
