"Who's scruffy look'n?!", definitely not you after you've paid a visit to Stag Hair Parlor on Melrose in LA! We've been patronizing this Mom 'n Pop for some time now and we love this place!

It's a fun place to get gussied up and it's just as fun to wait here to have your ears lowered! Until you're up, you can pass the time on one of their vintage sofas whilst sipping freshly brewed coffee or even throw back a beer (both offered for your refreshment - 21 and older on the later…ID pls). Above the sitting area is a lovely selection of artistic and inspirational magazines for your reading enjoyment and if that wasn't enough, your ear-holes will be soothed with great music, too.

The staff is great and they'll remember you ("The usual?"). When you've had a good chin-wag and a mop-chop you can add a little something extra to your stylish upgrade. Stag stocks hard to find hair products (imported from Italy - Ooh La La!) and a small selection of CDs, Vinyl and now new items from Maiden Voyage Clothing Co!

So, the next time you need a trim - check out Stag and while you're there pick up one of our wallets, t-shirts or posters!

Cryptozoology Tracking Society + Vote

Our newest design showcases Cryptozoology (the study of hidden animals). Cryptozoologists around the world have searched many years for these mysterious creatures, but only a few have come close enough to see these peculiar specimens of nature. Pay homage to their quest or wear it on your own obsessive search for an elusive cryptid!

Okay guys - we're interested in seeing what you think. We love this new design so much we're having trouble deciding what color way we like best! Of course we have our favorite(s), but for now we're keeping that a secret. So, if you would - look over the mock-ups and let us know what you think! We were always pretty sure our audience was comprised of at least a portion of people like us - nerds. Recently that was confirmed and we couldn't be happier!

Our Dark & Stormy Night tee was worn by Yuri Lowenthal on TableTop, a new show about board games. Yes, there's a show about board games and it's hosted by none other than, Wil Wheaton!

The show features a different game each episode and teaches you how it's played. The humor of the show makes learning the game fun and easy, while you also get a sense of whether you'll like the game before you buy and play yourself.

If you're even remotely into board games or gaming in general, check it out. You'll probably enjoy it!

Amazing Wooden Beer Caddy

Our friend J. Holden is a highly skilled jewelry craftsman, but don't let that fool you. He's a tough guy like you and me. He has a workshop. He uses tools. He has a mustache. He drives a '61 Rambler. He works with fire. He brews his own beer. Oh, and speaking of beer... for his latest creation he has constructed the most manly (and beautiful) wooden-six-pack-beer-bottle-caddy that you can own.

Mr. Holden hand makes and finishes each caddy to give it a beautiful patina and luster. The piece is then hand assembled with brass hardware and topped off with a hand stamped copper name plate that rests high atop the handle and simply reads BEER (that's JH's logo below the the beer stamp).

You should probably stop looking and just buy this for your dad's Father's Day gift - or - do like we did and pick one up just because. Email sales{at}jholdendesigns.com to get yourself in the queue or run over to his Etsy shop and pray they're in stock!

On June 6, we joined forces with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation at the 23rd "A Time for Heroes Celebrity Picnic" to support the Foundation’s mission to eliminate pediatric AIDS around the world. The event is a fun way to support and bring awareness to a serious cause.

We had a blast live printing t-shirts for the event and speaking with everyone that stopped by our booth. Live t-shirt printers Ink+Cotton (a great group of guys) were there hand-pulling our designs for over 500 t-shirts during the event!

Patchwork Culver City Edition

Ship photography on display in Los Angeles

Who doesn't love black and white photography of industrial settings and towering ships?

Running June 17th through September 30, you can see photographer and ship enthusiast Martin Cox's show Stranded at the Los Angeles Maritime Museum. His show focuses on older ships that are slated for dismantling since the tightening of Safety of Life at Sea laws.

In a brief interview with MaritimeMatters, Cox explains how experiences of his youth helped shape this show.

The Hester Street Fair is a New York staple when it comes to street fairs. The fair dates back to 1895 and any street fair that has been around 100+ years has something go'n on! Oh, you don't live in NYC? That's cool - neither do we. Now, luckily, you can get your dose of Hester on either coast - Hester is coming to Hollywood. This NYC transplant makes its left coast debut tomorrow morning! Get your rump up bright and early for a stroll down the walk of fame, some fresh Hollywood air and some street fair goodness! Oh... and you don't have to get up early... it'll be there till 7pm.

This double-sided pillow commemorates the Battle of Davenport*, in which General Scooter "Foxy" McGee led the Catfederate Grey Coats against the Union Blue Bellies led by General Cornelius Fuzzington.

*A name sometimes given to a more formal sofa.

General Scooter "Foxy" McGee (Cat Side):
General McGee's stealthy ability to catch the enemy off guard earned him the nickname "Foxy", as well as an array of medals. The ribbon below his portrait reads "Nine Lives to Live, Nine Lives to Give".

General Cornelius Fuzzington (Dog Side):
Even after suffering the loss of an eye in battle, he pressed on and earned himself the coveted Crossbones Medal of Valor. The ribbon below his portrait reads "Loyalty in Life, Honor in Death".

Masters of Illusion

We’ve been on a magic kick lately and after our recent Houdini post, we’ve decided to delve a little deeper…

Harry Houdini was amazing – what about all the other magicians throughout history? Masters of Illusion is currently on exhibit at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA – some of our crew saw this exhibit along with the Houdini: Art and Magic exhibit.

This exhibit covers Jewish magicians throughout the Golden Age of magic (1875-1948). On display are multitudes of magic ephemera, beautifully colored lithographs and playbills, photographs, and artifacts - the real costumes and props used in shows by famous magicians, such as Alexander Herrmann (1844–1896), Albert "The Great Rameses" Marchinski (1876–1930), The Great Leon (1876–1951), Carl Ballantine (1917–2009) and even a few pieces from Harry Houdini (1874–1926), himself.

Just the sheer amount of pieces and the colorful displays transport you to the times of long ago, into the interesting lives of these mysterious magicians. You’ll encounter old radio and video clips of these people, too. Docent led tours are available at set times (and are included in the price of admission.) The museum gift shop has a wonderful array of magic books that include how-to’s on magic tricks, to biographies on magicians.

The exhibit will end January 8, 2012. General admission is $10, $7 for seniors and students, $5 children 2-12, Museum members and children under 2 are free. Also, Thursdays are free for all!
