Shopping for a washing machine can sometimes be difficult because there are so many different models out there. You might be looking at a washer-dryer duo or one that has special features that others do not have like a steam washer. There are quite a few things you need to keep in mind when you are in the market for a washing machine so that you and your family have a beautiful machine that is going to work wonderfully each day.

1. Establish a Budget

One of the first things you need to do is to establish a budget for yourself. The problem with washing machines is that they can get very expensive, very quickly. You might find a machine that looks cheap, but then the delivery and installation costs come into play and increase the price. Set a budget for yourself and then consider looking at machines that are within that range.

2. Read Reviews and Compare Models

The great thing about doing research online for different washing machinesis that you can easily read reviews written by people who actually own the washer themselves. These people are going to review the machine in a very honest opinion so that you know if it is going to be the right machine for you. Just because a machine is made by a great company does not mean that it is going to perform to its standards. Online reviews can help you to weed out the good washing machines from the bad ones.

3. Consider Buying Used

If you would rather not pay the high price associated with a brand new washing machine, you really need to think about buying one used. Used machines can work just as well as a brand new one, granted that you buy it from a good seller. You want to make sure that the washer is in good working order before you spend the money on it and have it delivered to your home.

4. Look Closely at Delivery and Installation Costs

Buying the washer is sometimes the easiest part of making this type of purchase. Having the large machine delivered and put into your home is a whole different story. The one thing to remember is that you will be paying for delivery and installation if you buy the machine from a regular store. If you are able to bring the machine home yourself and do the installation yourself, you might be able to save a decent amount of money in the process.

5. Work with the Space You Have

One of the most important things you need to remember about buying a washing machine is that you need to work with the space that you have. If you have a very tiny cupboard that the machine is going into, you need to shop exclusively for smaller-sized washing machines. You will notice that by taking these tips into consideration, it is easier for you to find the machine that you need for your home or flat.

With the objective to enhance the current catering quality standards of their outport catering stations, Hong Kong Dragon Airlines Limited (Dragonair) introduced their newly developed Caterer Performance Management Program (CPMP) in 2012. This program serves as a very comprehensive system to measure and recognize caterers’ performance from all perspectives including Quality, Safety & Customer Satisfaction for a period of one year.

Part of the rating system included a survey conducted in January 2013. Direct ratings were given by managers in catering departments, KA local airport managers and the Cabin Crew. The results were tabulated with MacroAsia Catering Services (MACS) in Manila successfully clinching the Silver Award, the second highest award, recognizing the company as a top performing caterer amongst the 24 catering outstations where Dragonair flies to/from worldwide.

The outcome of the CPMP survey indicated that MACS achieved outstanding ratings in all perspectives of the 7 measuring criteria and executed reliable, consistent and high quality catering services to Dragonair.

The awarding ceremony was held at The Den, Marriott Hotel last 12 April 2013. The ceremony was attended by Mr. Patrick Yeung, Dragonair’s Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Andy Wong, General Manager for Inflight Services. Ms. Kim Chong, Manager for Catering Services and Mr. Edmond Lo, Manager for Performance, Quality Assurance & Special Projects.

The award was received by Mr. Joseph Chua, MACS President and Mr. Rhodel Esteban, MACS General Manager.

The handing of the award was witnessed by the local executives of both Dragonair and Cathay Pacific including Mr. Martin Xu, Country Manager. Mr. Ray Fung, Dragonair Reprsentative in Manila and Mr. Eddie Monreal, Airport Station Manager. Also present are the executives from MacroAsia Corporation and the MACS Management Team and staff.

Dragonair (KA) operates five (5) weekly flights from Manila to Hong Kong.

MY World is a global survey for citizens led by the United Nations and partners. It aims to capture people’s voices, priorities and views, so that global leaders can be informed as they begin the process of defining the new development agenda for the world.

The sixteen issues have been built up from the priorities expressed by poor people in existing research and polling exercises and they cover the existing Millennium Development Goals, plus issues of sustainability, security, governance and transparency.

Last May 03,together with the group of friends, Kendrick and I attended the opening of the photo exhibit at The Rice Wold Museum entitled,Feathers In The Field: The Birds Of IRRI, at Los Banos Laguna.

The objective of the photo exhibit is to educated people about birds, that not all of them are harmful to rice production, that many of them actually are very helpful.

“The biggest myth about birds is that all of them eat rice. This just isn’t true.”-Richard Smedley.

Mr. Richard Smedley, a long time bird-watcher and studying birds from different country are trying to debunk the old myth about birds and rice. The exhibit shows a lot of birds with information about their habitat and diet.

If you go visit the exhibit, which by the way, will be on display until September 27, 2013 at IRRI (International Rice Research Institute) Headquarters in Los Banos Laguna, you’ll see a lot of birds which all of it are from the IRRI surrounding area, either a native of IRRI while the others are just visiting for a stop over.

A lot of IRRI ambassadors from neighboring Asian countries were there to graced the event and of course, photo exhibit and museum are places that my boys love to visit as well.

Here is Kendrick posing with foreign visitors.

The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) is beginning a three (3)-year program aimed at generating growth for the country’s agribusiness trade, directly benefitting workers in the agricultural and fisheries sectors across the country, in line with President Benigno S. Aquino III’s push for inclusive growth.

The DOTC announced on Wednesday (May 8, 2013) that it has signed a Cooperation Agreement with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to pursue various policy and regulatory reforms in the Philippine shipping sector in order to improve our farmers’ market access and integration by reducing the cost of domestic shipping.

The project will involve a diagnostic review by the IFC to identify areas where pro-competitive practices will help meet these goals. The DOTC will work together with its frontline agencies, the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) and the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), in reviewing the results of the study and implementing the recommendations of the IFC from 2013 to 2016.

“This partnership with the IFC is a very welcome development. It will have a major impact on our economy, especially for farmers and fisherfolk who stand to realize the most gains from our policy reforms,” said the Transport Department.

The DOTC explained further that, by reducing domestic shipping costs, the prices of commodities will also go down. According to a study prepared by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in 2005, 24.2% to 43.8% of the wholesale price of food products is on account of transport and logistics costs.

“By making it cheaper to move agricultural goods from farms to markets, the prices of these commodities will also be reduced, making them more affordable to consumers,” remarked the DOTC. “These benefits are the reason why the DOTC, MARINA, and PPA – all of whom share the President’s vision of inclusive growth – look forward to this project.”

This effort is partly funded by the Canadian International Cooperation Agency (CIDA), and will require no cost on the part of the Philippine government. It is also part of the IFC’s Philippine Agribusiness Trade Logistics program.

According to IFC Resident Representative Jesse Ang, this agreement demonstrates the IFC’s confidence in the DOTC, MARINA, and PPA’s efforts to undertake shipping and port reforms.

OUT FOR A NIGHT TIME RUN: ENERGIZER NIGHT RACE FOR SAFE AND ECO-FRIENDLY LIGHTS

Variety is the spice of life, and the same is true for runners, who also like to mix things up in regard to their routine and their training. This need for variation extends all the way to the events and competitions in which runners participate.

To satisfy different quirks and fancies, event organizers have explored a multitude of ways to keep the running community on their toes. This includes running competitions with added obstacles, on off-road tracks and, most recently, holding races at night.

Competitive racing in the dead of night certainly adds a different dimension to the running experience. Being enveloped by darkness requires runners to be more sensitive to the slightest conditions on the road, demanding complete focus and undivided attention. Preparations in the run-up to competition also vary. Training regimen, as well as prep time, tend to differ, too, which only adds to the challenge.

Local runners have already had the pleasure of trying out night races through different competitions already hosted here in the Philippines. This night race craze, however, started in 2011 with one event, the Energizer Night Race.

That race was part of Energizer’s bigger initiative called the “Energizer Night Race for a Brighter World”, a series of nighttime running events held around the world including countries in Africa, Europe, North and South America, and throughout Asia. Over 75,000 participants joined the more than 30 Energizer Night Races held in 20 countries across the globe.

The magnitude of the event’s success, transcended more than mere numbers. This global night race has served as an effective vehicle in raising awareness of the world’s need for safe, clean, and affordable solar lighting. “It’s hard to believe that in this day and age that there are still around 1.3 billion people deprived of electricity and clean lighting,” says Energizer’s Brand Manager, Joan Mendoza. “This event is just one way in which Energizer can bring this issue forth and be addressed for the benefit of less fortunate communities all over the world.”

Running at night guided only by Energizer LED Headlamps, runners get a sense of how important light is. Usually taken for granted in developed areas, light and clean energy are extremely valuable in off-the-grid communities. They dictate a child’s capacity to learn, an adult’s ability to work, and the community’s maximum functionality. They also help promote personal health and the environment by lessening carbon emissions made by alternative light sources such as candles, kerosene lamps, and firewood.

The need for efficient and eco-friendly lighting has led Energizer to partner with One Million Lights (OML), a nonprofit organization that shares the same goal of providing rural communities around the world with the gift of light. Since 2011, Energizer and OML have donated 23 million hours’ worth of light through Energizer Solar-Powered LED flashlights and lamps to different remote communities in Latin America, Ethiopia, Kenya, and the Philippines.

Energizer’s efforts to put the issue of light and energy in perspective are part of their “That’s Positivenergy™” campaign that serves as the company’s platform to show its commitment to performance and responsibility. This means providing consumers with durable and energy efficient products for everyday needs.

Running has been an effective way of gathering the public’s support for worthy causes, from community health and fitness to environmental advocacies. By immersing runners in the kind of situations individuals in remote, off-the-grid communities go through, the company hopes participants look beyond the event and appreciate and support what it stands for.

To alleviate the lack of energy and light in far-flung communities, Energizer again strengthens its drive by calling out running and fitness enthusiasts to join in the cause by participating in this year’s Energizer Night Race Manila. The race will be held on May 4, 2013 at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig with the help of partners GMA Network and Schick.

Registration is on-going until April 30, 2013 at BROOKS SM North EDSA, RUNNR Bonifacio High Street, and Toby’s Sports EDSA Shangri-la, Glorietta, and SM Mall of Asia. For more information about the race, visit www.energizerglobalnightrace.com.

Krispy Kreme is known as one of the best place to work and to dine with. Their customer service is superb and now, they are taking it to the next level by teaming up with Support And Empowred Abused Deaf Children, Inc. (SEADC) and Stairway Foundation, Krispy Kreme Philippines launched, Sharing The Gift Of Joy Through The Read Along Program.

The aim of this program to spread awareness about how hearing impaired people having problem communicating with people when they are in a public place,or establishment, like Krispy Kreme.

For example, when placing their order, they wrote down everything on the piece of paper and give it to the crew. Krispy Kreme is trying to break that communication barrier by teaching their crew the basic sign language so that they could communicate with their customers more appropriately. By learning the basic words and phrases that’s been use regularly like,”how much”, “where’s the washroom?”,”small size”,”medium”,”dozen” ,etc..etc..accomodating them will be a pleasant experience for both.

Below is Mrs. Liwanag Caldito, spokeperson for SEADC, telling us how important it is for them, kids with hearing impaired,to let them know that they are not different from the rest of us. That,us,people that could hear, are doing everything we can to accomodate them as pleasing as possible and make it a lot easier for them to communicate with us and vice versa.

Here, kids are enjoying the story telling as you can see how serious they are while “listening” to their teacher during the Read Along session.
