10 Things That Bloggers Tend to Forget, But Shouldn’t!

I must admit that I tend to forget some of these myself, so hopefully this post will also serve as a checklist to go through once in a while. What about you, do you forget them?

1. Proofread. If you browse around the blogosphere you will notice that the vast majority of the bloggers do not proofread. Confusions with its and it’s, your and you’re, and their and they’re are very common. So the next time you finish writing a post or article, remember to proofread it. 2. Backup. Over the past year I had around five friends coming to me on MSN and asking: “Hey Daniel, my blog crashed, and I had no backups, any tips on how to solve it?” Trust me, you really don’t want to find yourself in that position. Backup regularly if you do it manually. The best option, however, would be to get a script or your hosting provider to do automatic daily backups. 3. Link to older posts. Linking to older posts can increase your traffic and search engine rankings. Additionally, it can also give more information for the readers that want to go deeper into certain subjects. 4. Answer to comments. When you started blogging I am pretty sure that you got excited with the first few comments that arrived. You would even take the time to answer to each of them individually. That approach helps to create loyal readers and to build a community around them. Even if your blog is much more popular now, do not neglect the comments. At the very minimum you want to answer the people that post direct questions to you.

5. Answer to emails. Depending on the size of your audience it might become cumbersome to answer to all emails, but you should try nonetheless. Create a standard letter to common questions that you get asked. Answer to them in batches. Do whatever it takes, but try to be responsive to people that want to interact with you. It might be the difference between an upset visitor and a faithful reader. If you have a hard time dealing with your email, check these 10 tips to manage it more efficiently.

6. Approve comments. If you use comment moderation (and you should unless you get very low volumes of spam) you should approve pending comments on a regular basis. There is nothing worse than taking the time to leave a meaningful comment on a blog and not being able to see it published within a couple of hours. Not to mention when your comment doesn’t get published at all.

7. Check the spam folder. This point is valid both for your blog comments and for your emails. Some legitimate comments and emails might slip to the spam folder. This is not your fault, but it is not fault of the sender either, so check these folders once in a while to make sure people are not getting ignored.

8. Upgrade WordPress. Common sense, yet many bloggers are reluctant to upgrade their WordPress software. Some people deliberately choose to use older versions. That could be possible if you know what you are doing (i.e. if you know to patch the security holes). If that is not your case, though, just stick with the latest version. 9. Update WordPress plugins. Not all plugins are compatible with all WordPress versions. Some require special functions or features that are found only on a particular version, and they might end up messing up your blog. Some of them also come with bugs and security problems, which get fixed by the author on consecutive versions.

10. Network. Ask ten bloggers what is the secret of their success, and I am sure that at least half of them will mention their network of contacts and friends. Sometimes who you know is more important than what you know. Keep that in mind and try to network with people as often as possible. As a blogger you have numerous way to do it.

Have you seen Jon’s “Drunk on Your Own Words” post at Copyblogger? It’s a good piece, go read it if you haven’t already. After reading it I realized blogging has some things in common with drinking the booze:

Inhibitions - For some of us blogging can strip away inhibitions. This could be in the way people deal with criticism or trolls, lashing out in a way they never would in real life, or it could be just the lack of self censorship. I have seen people say stuff in a blog that they would never say in mixed company in face to face meetings. Everything from details of their sexual encounters to political opinions and bigotry. Is it interesting human interest or “over share”? You decide …
Solution: Don’t post in haste. Write like your mum or boss is reading.
Arrogance - We have all seen at one time a cocky drunk. The “I can take on anyone in the room” guy. Some people seem to take a blog audience as confirmation of their infallibility and fame. Everyone else is there as a potential victim to be torn down. This seems particularly rife in the tech and celebrity sectors. Thankfully in both cases someone usually gives them a reality check eventually.
Solution: Realize you are not perfect yourself and what you put out you get back.
Despair - Just like alcohol can be a mood enhancer for both good and bad moods, blogs can either make you feel more connected or exaggerate your feelings of being unloved and alone. People are often asking me why nobody visits? why will no one comment? why doesn’t anyone like my blog? Just like when the booze alters your judgment, sometimes we find it difficult to be objective about our blogging so continue as we always have while getting more unhappy.
Solution: Make friends in forums, comment on others blogs, chat on IM and email. Other people are usually happy to let you know the truth of the situation or just give support.
Buzz - People drink for the buzz, for that elevation of mood. Blogging can make you happy, and can make you super-friendly. This is great but don’t let it loosen your grip on reality. Being friendly is great but not every visitor wants to be your friend. When drinking hold on to your wallet and keys, when blogging look after your passwords and privacy.
Solution: Post in draft, do not reveal too much, have clear procedures for keeping details safe and not always using the same passwords, keep backups.
Hangover - Inevitably realty sets in and you look at recent events objectively. You have to clean up your mess and feel the sting of shame every time you remember what you said or did.
Solution: Prevention is easier than cure but if you do find yourself having to clear up a mess, be honest and remorseful and hope people forgive and forget!

The answer might be “don’t drink”, but like most things in life, moderation with a clear mind is the key!

Alexa is crap !
This is what one of a blogger told me when I was new to blogging.

I don't think so. As we all know Alexa Rank is very important for Paid Posting !
I have been working hard to get a alexa rank !
The first time alexa rank appeared for my blog was on 31 Dec. 2007.

It was around 4,665,465. on 2nd it changed to 3,665,465 .... and increase
by 1,000,000 in 2 days ! I was really happy to see this !..

Then it 1,824,321 .... I was very happy again !
The more the rank is increasing the competition is increasing...
Then form 1,824,321 to around 1,500,000 and now its 10,41,466.

Within 25 days i have archived this rank !..
I am looking forward for a 6 figure rank in this week !

If you already have a Gmail (or Google) account, then the hard part is out of the way. Google Groups are like a blend between message boards and e-mail lists, where various topics can be discussed. Not only can you learn a lot and establish yourself using Groups, you can also build traffic to your blog.

Initially, you may not be a member of any Groups, however, you can quickly change that by browsing the various groups by category or doing a search. Try to find groups that have active discussions and that spark your interest. Once you’ve chosen a few groups, I’ll provide you with some tips for making the most of them.

Give Your Profile Some Attention

Before you jump into all the discussions, it’s a good idea to fill out your profile so when people begin to wonder about who you are (and if you participate enough, they will), they’ll know how to find your website. To spark additional interest, you may want to add a picture to your profile as well.

Discover Blog Topics

People are usually asking plenty of questions in Google Groups and if you happen to know the answer, great. You can respond to the group, but you can take it beyond the group by polishing up the answer and blogging it. Of course, it should go without saying that you shouldn’t reveal any personal information about the inquirer.

A discussion may even spark a heated debate that you can chime in on from your blog, and also get a wider group of people involved. Be sure that you also check the group’s rules to make sure that certain topics aren’t confidential and to be contained within the group environment first.

Contribute to the Discussion

You don’t have to be a know it all to participate in the rhetoric. Ask questions or garner opinions about a topic. Whenever the opportunity does come up to answer a question, do so. And don’t be afraid to put your opinion out there in an open discussion.

Add a Tasteful Signature

Your signature doesn’t need to be big and flashy to get noticed. Simply signing your name, followed by your web address, should be enough. If you participate regularly and offer insightful commentary, people will be more inclined to click through to see what else you have to offer.

But, before you run off to start crafting your new signature, make sure that the group you’ve joined allows them. Some groups specifically request that you don’t use signatures or that you keep them under a certain number of lines.

Play By the Rules

This is common sense, but bears repeating. Various groups will have their own code of conduct. Not playing by the rules can land you in a kettle of hot water. You may end up being labeled a spammer or kicked out by the group admin.

Conduct yourself as you would being a guest in someone’s home, and you can’t go wrong. If you keep your nose clean, get involved, and show others that you are passionate about a topic, then you’ll be opening many doors for networking and growing your website.

Google Changes Referral Policy For AdSense Referrals

Pricing structure change for North America, Latin America, or Japan: If you are based in North America, Latin America, or Japan, and you refer someone to become an AdSense publisher via the Google referrals program, you will now earn a lot less. Starting the last week in January, the payout for referring a user who generates $100 with AdSense in the first 180 days will be $100. In the past, you earned $5 if the AdSense publisher you referred made $5 within 180 days; plus, if that publisher made $100 within 180 days, you get $250; plus, if you referred 25 people who make $100 within 180 days, you get a bonus of $2,000.

Program is canceled for publishers outside of North America, Latin America, or Japan: Google will stop paying a commission to those affiliates who refer publishers to sign up with AdSense, if that affiliate is based outside of North America, Latin America, or Japan.

Again, this only impacts the AdSense referral product. This does not impact the referral products for AdWords, Checkout, Google Pack, and so on.

Of all people in the world I was easily one of the most pessimistic about computers, the Internet and now that I even know they exist-blogs. I think blogs are pretty cool but I never thought I could have one. I thought the processes of getting a site; domain name and the actual building of the blog would just be out of my league. I’m a complete novice when it comes to technology, but I do like writing a journal, and I thought having a journal on-line would be both fun and make life simpler for me. No more writing with pens, other people can read my stuff and comment on it, and I could add pictures to illustrate my points and make things look more interesting.

Well, now I’ve got one! It’s awesome. I won’t lie and say it was easy, but I think if you hook up with a good web hosting company it’s not such a daunting experience as you might expect. I got a few work mates to help me. I went through a couple administrative hitches when filling in my personal information forms for the registration-just because I’m a bit silly in the head. We had a little trouble with the blog program we used, but these challenges were eventually overcome. My boss says he’s going to make a simple program that people can hook up easily.

I chose my domain name: thepowerofeverythingthatis.com. It’s my own name-no one else on Earth can have it. I own it. I picked a nice picture out for the background-it looks really sweet, much better than a blank sheet in a diary. I got it from a site that gives photos out without charging a royalty (the first few): www.istockphoto.com.

I just want you to know the great feeling I got when I first typed in my domain name and my site came up! It was the equivalent to a person who’s afraid of heights being accepted into an astronaut’s mission into outer space. Or maybe it was like a turtle driving a Ferrari 300km per hour. Possibly it was like all the ants in the world getting together for peace talks.

It’s a real blast having this blog. I can write on it any time, anywhere, from my laptop, at an Internet café etc. I can write as much as I want, and I’m hoping one day my writing may inspire others to communicate with me about the subjects that I’m interested in.

Look, if you like writing about anything, and want to have your thoughts and opinions on the Internet, maybe meeting others similar to yourself in the progress; you have to get a blog and get it now. Don’t be afraid any longer, the world is in the palm of your hands; it’s time to get on!

The Importance of Favicons

Favicons should not be taken lightly. They are an excellent way to help create brand awareness of your website, bring visitors to your website, and to keep bringing them back again. If you do not know what a favicon (favorites icon) is, it is the little 16×16 icon that shows up next to the websites title on the tab bar or bookmarks.

1. Brand Awareness

Just as big corporations create ‘brand awareness’, you can do the same thing too with your websites. Your logo and the favicon will help create a visual representation to your visitors. Since your logo is too big to fit everywhere, the favicon is the next best thing to represent your website in those small spots.

2. Bookmarks

Browsers and bookmarking websites now feature your favicon in your bookmarked listings. This is a good way to help your visitors who bookmarked your website, to see your favicon and come back to your website again. Sometimes we have so many bookmarks in one folder that it is hard to figure out which website may have the information we need, having your favicon next to your listing will help them find you quickly and not ignore your website.

2. Tab Bar and Search Bar

Most web browsers will list your favicon not only on the tabs, but also on the search bar as well. So there are 2 more places your website brand is shown to your visitor. Also keep in mind that when your visitors change websites, the favicon might change to a new one and this may clue them into the fact that they’ve left your website even if they did not intend to. It is excellent way to remind them to go back and open up a new window.

4. Search Engines and Websites

Firefox has an extension called Google Icon, that places the websites favicon in Google search results. You can certainly attract more eyes to your listing if you have your favicon next to it. We may see more extensions made and search engines picking up on adding favicons to their results in the future.

5. Comments Sections

Some blogs will fetch your favicon and place it next to your comments. I am currently doing that with my blog now too and have seen this on other blogs as well. It makes the comments look very unique. Just as avatars can attract visitors, so can an interesting favicon attract other visitors to clicking on your website link.

6. RSS Feeds

If you feature an RSS feed on your website, you will certainly want to have a favicon. When your readers are viewing your feed through their RSS feed readers, they will see your favicon listed next to your feed. This is another way to help create brand awareness for your website and get them to read your feed.

The last reason you should have an favicon, is because I love them! I enjoy seeing what creative favicons other webmasters can come up with in a small 16×16 pixel space. Also because it really does help me identify with your website.

Once they leave your website, you want to take as many steps as you can to bring them back to your site. Your favicon is a clever way to get your visitors attention and promote your website through several different mediums.

Google PR Update: Here We Go Again!

Keep in mind there is nothing confirmed, but several people started to notice changes both in PageRank and backlinks count numbers.

I tried to check on Google’s data centers but most of them are behaving strangely (reporting a PR0 even for established websites). One tool that appears to be working is this one.

No one was expecting such an early PageRank update in 2008. The last one, as you probably can remember, happened late in October and it created a lot of buzz due to a new policy that Google decided to adopt towards websites that were selling text links without the nofollow tag.

There are several lists of “Top 10” Wordpress plugins around the Internet. Most of them, however, refer to the best or most popular plugins. Guess what, I’ve had enough of Akismet, Adsense Deluxe, Related Entries and company!

Jokes apart, those plugins are certainly awesome, but there are many others out there that can be life savers, and people often neglect them. Below you will the Top 10 Underrated Wordpress plugins; if you think there is a plugin missing on the list just post a comment.

1. Custom Querry String

Wordpress is a very flexible platform, but regulating the number of posts that are supposed to be displayed on the different pages is quite difficult. Most of the times you will want to display a limited number of posts on the Homepage while displaying a larger list for the categories, archives or search results pages, and this is not possible through the control panel. The solution for this problem is the Custom Querry String plugin, which allows you to configure this number individually for each page type.

2. Head Meta Description

While the Meta Keywords Tag is no longer used by most search engines, the Meta Description Tag still has some influence. Having the same Description Tag on all your pages, however, might be inneficient and send part of your website to the supplemental hell. This plugin is extremely easy to install and it will create a dynamic Meta Description Tag for every page on your blog, based on post excerpts or on the first words of the page.

3. Clean Archives

Most blogs have a “Monthly Archives” section on their sidebar, displaying a huge list of months and wasting some precious space. A more efficient structure for your archives would be a single page where all the posts are displayed, month by month. That is exactly what this plugin will do (you can see an example here). Notice that you might need the plugin below to install this one successfully.

4. Exec-PHP

Many plugins or Wordpress features require that you run some PHP code. When you need to use those features or plugins inside static pages or posts, however, Wordpress will not recognize the code. The solution for this problem is the Exec-PHP plugin. Once installed the plugin will enable PHP code on virtually all the pages of your blog. There are similar plugins available, but this one is the most reliable.

5. Enforce www. Preference

If your site can be accessed through http://www.domain.com and http://domain.com you might have some problems over the long run. Most search engines treat those addresses as two different domains, spliting your backlink count. In order to solve this issue you need to setup a 301 Permanent Redirect. The are several ways to setup this redirect, but if you are not familiar with PHP or if your host is not Linux based (for the .htaccess file) this plugin represents the simplest one. You just need to activate it and all the visitors and search bots will get redirected to the address that is specified on the Wordpress control panel.

6. Chunk URLs

Ever experienced someone posting a huge URL on your comment section? Those long strings are not only ugly, but they might also break the design of your website on certain browsers. This plugin will trunk those long URLs into smaller ones, and you can even specify the amount of characters that the output should contain.

7. Sig2feed

Sploggers are feed stealers are spreading out like fire. The first measure to protect your content is to add a copyright notice to your feed, possibly with a link pointing to your site. Sig2feed is a very light plugin that will do just that.

8. FeedSmith

This plugin is very similar to the Ultimate Tag Warrior, but it is much more user friendly. Once the plugin is installed you will be able to tag individual posts and to create an internal tag system and tag clouds. Secondly you can also use it to generate a dynamic Meta Keywords Tag.

10. WP-Cache

WP-Cache is a very robust plugin that will increase the responsiveness of your website and reduce the server load. It is also very useful to handle sudden burts in traffic coming from social bookmarking sites. The plugin basically creates static versions of your pages and serves them without querrying the MySQL database.
