Yesterday we have had a terrible time since the first news came in about what was happening at Pukkelpop.

Pukkelpop is more than a festival for us, it’s a second home. A place where we have experienced intense emotions and felt a real communion with its incredible audience.

Out of respect and compassion for people who lost their lives today, Bloody Beetroots Death Crew 77, its crew and its management have decided not to perform at the festival, although the organization has
given us the opportunity to play anyway.

We want to extend a warm embrace to the families affected by this tragedy, the public, friends , organizers and all the people who worked hard to bring aid.

[PIAS] and AIM have created a fund to help support labels that have been adversely affected by the Sony DADC fire.

Official Statement issued by [PIAS]

[PIAS] have been overwhelmed by the response and incredible support offered to both ourselves and the labels that we represent here in the UK.

Labels and artists affected by the destruction of the Sony DADC warehouse are faced with incredible pressures on their businesses in respect to the re-manufacture, re-supply and marketing required as a result of the fire. Whilst it is expected that insurance will cover the lost stock, the reality for many labels is that they will not be compensated or insured for an interruption of trade or the additional capital to reproduce the stock that they have lost and the promotion in which they have invested.

[PIAS] have been working around the clock to ensure that the wheels of supply continue to turn as soon as possible. [PIAS] and AIM (Association of Independent Music) have been in dialogue with MCPS, PPL and other companies and organisations to discuss ways in which these additional and un-insured costs can be mitigated.

Additional efforts from [PIAS] range from securing preferential rates with suppliers for affected labels; encouraging digital retail initiatives to drive and promote digital sales whilst physical stocks replenish; conducting negotiations to reduce fees that might be charged to labels in the normal course of business.

The last 48 hours has seen a genuine outpouring of support for the principle of independent labels, artists and repertoire. [PIAS] and our labels have received offers of support from both some of the largest names in the business to individuals, all of which simply want to do all they can to support the continued vibrancy and creativity associated with independent music.

In addition to the efforts to reduce actual costs through negotiation, and in response to the numerous offers of support, benefits, fundraising initiatives etc, [PIAS] have worked in conjunction with AIM to create a fund that companies and organisers of initiatives can contribute to. In this way, we have created a vehicle for enabling those involved to do so safe in the knowledge that such monies will be distributed fairly amongst the most needy labels with the sanction of both [PIAS] and AIM.

Corrupt Cop Thriller: First Stills from ‘Rampart’ Starring Woody Harrelson
Moverman’s latest is a likely Oscar candidate

In 2010 Oscilloscope Laboratories pulled off something of a miracle. The small distributor managed to earn Oren Moverman’s The Messenger a pair of Oscar nominations despite not having an overwhelmingly large Oscar campaigning budget. It was an example of the art doing the work on its own rather than money being used to influence a decision (something I hope they’re able to do again this year with Lynne Ramsay’s We Need to Talk about Kevin).

Moverman’s next film, Rampart, reteams him with his Oscar-nominated star Woody Harrelson and just as he did when he was nominated for his Messenger screenplay, Moverman has again teamed on the script, this time with crime fiction novelist James Ellroy as the two have adapted Ellroy’s novel for the screen.

Along with Harrelson the film is loaded to the teeth with stars including Sigourney Weaver, Robin Wright, Steve Buscemi, Cynthia Nixon, Ben Foster (whom also starred in The Messenger to rave reviews), Anne Heche, Ice Cube and Ned Beatty.

The story concerns the LAPD Rampart Division, centering on the last of the renegade cops, police officer Dave Brown (Harrelson) who is caught on tape “doing the people’s dirty work” and finds himself at the center of a vicious scandal. The days of being above the law are over. Now a poster boy for police corruption, Dave learns he’s been targeted by cop killers looking for revenge. Nothing is what it seems as Dave descends into the L.A. underworld and exacts his own brand of justice.

Today I have three new stills from the film including the one you see above and the two you see below. The film is in post-production and still without a distributor, which tells me it’s a likely candidate to be found at the Toronto International Film Festival where I hope I’ll see it before what I expect will be an Oscar run.

Moby was born in new york city, but grew up in connecticut, where he started making music when he was 9 years old. he started out playing classical guitar and studied music theory, and then went on to play with seminal connecticut hardcore punk group ‘the vatican commandoes’ when he was 14. he then played with post-punk band ‘awol’ while studying philosophy at the university of connecticut and suny purchase. he started dj’ing while attending college, and was a fixture in the late 80′s new york house and hip-hop scenes, dj’ing at clubs such as mars, red zone, mk, and the palladium.

he released his first single, ‘go’ in 1991(listed as one of rolling stones best records of all time), and has been making albums ever since. his own records have sold over 20,000,000 copies worldwide, and he’s also produced and remixed scores of other artists, including david bowie, metallica, the beastie boys, public enemy, among others.

moby has toured extensively, playing well over 3,000 concerts in his career. he has also had his music used in hundreds of different films, including ‘heat’, ‘any given sunday’, ‘tomorrow never dies’, and ‘the beach’, among others.

currently he’s touring in support of his most recent album, ‘wait for me’, as well as working closely with a variety of different charities, including the humane society and the institute for music and neurologic function.

1993 – goes on tour with the prodigy and richie hawtin and john acquaviva in north america. later in the year goes on tour with orbital, aphex twin, and vapourspace. leaves instinct records and releases ‘move’ on mute records. 2nd performance on ‘top of the pops’ for ‘move’.

1994 – spends the entire year working on ‘everything is wrong’.

1995 – releases ‘everything is wrong’ and tours from march until december. headlines the 2nd stage at lollapalooza and tours europe with the red hot chili peppers.
‘everything is wrong’ is named spin magazines ‘album of the year’.

1996 – releases ‘animal rights’ and tours europe with soundgarden. ‘animal rights’ receives very bad reviews and sells terribly. 3rd performance on ‘top of the pops’ for ‘come on baby’. also releases ‘voodoo child: the end of everything’.

1997 – releases ‘james bond theme’ as part of ‘tomorrow never dies’. it gets to #8 in the uk charts. also releases ‘i like to score’, a collection of music that has appeared in different films.

1998 – ends contract with elektra records. spends entire year working on ‘play’ and trying to find a record contract in north america.

1999 – signs with v2 records(run by dan beck and richard sanders) and releases ‘play’ in may of 1999. ‘play’ sells poorly at first and gets mediocre reviews but eventually goes on to sell over 9,000,000 records worldwide.
‘play’ tour started in march of 1999 and continued until august of 2001.

2000 – touring. 4th and 5th ‘top of the pops’ performances for ‘natural blues’ and ‘porcelain’.

2001 – more touring. some tour highlights: the area1 festival with outkast and new order.
last show of the ‘play’ tour is with u2 at slane castle in ireland.
during this time moby is also working on ’18′.

2002 – releases ’18′ in may of 2002. tours from february of 2002 until autumn of 2003.

The competition is heating up on Uncharted this week; with few major leaps in the rankings, artists are digging their heels in.

First, DJ BL3ND takes back the lead once again, this time from last week’s No. 1 Colette Carr, with a jawdropping 128,000 SoundCloud song streams and 19,000 new Facebook fans during the chart period.

Uncharted welcomes to the ranking Drive A, the power-pop rock outfit whose April 5 album release raked in over 37,000 views of their YouTube channel this week. The LA quartet are on tour in support of the album, “The World in Shambles,” through the end of May.

Despite their being in the finalist pool for Billboard and Chevrolet’s Battle of the Bands competition, Houston sextet Otenki took a hard fall from No. 18 to No. 39 this week. Their Uncharted residency is far from over, however; as the Billboard Music Awards draw closer and with their new album “Kinetic” on the horizon, Otenki’s buzz status is likely to rise again.

Italian dance/electronica duo Bloody Beetroots Death Crew 77 made a huge leap on Uncharted this week, from No. 44 to No. 9. The jump is no doubt thanks to their performance over the weekend at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in Indio, Calif. The Beetroots racked up over 67,000 SoundCloud and 38,000 Last.fm song plays this week.

Finally, minimalist dance producer Nicolas Jaar makes a triumphant return to this week’s chart, with nearly 47,000 Last.fm song plays and more than 35,000 SoundCloud streams. I would not wish what Japan is going through at the moment on my worst enemy. And I don’t want to profit from their terrible situation with cheap analysis or cheap commentary on FB. All I will say is that to see a people SO united/dignified & humble, in the face of such terrible adversity, is a real BIG lesson to us all. No looting, no cheating, no queue jumping – even the prisoners in jails, where the walls were smashed to bits, have stayed put. If we can, and I know this sounds SO cheap from the comfort of my warm flat in downtown comfy Paris, learn ANYTHING from this most amazing of peoples, well, it’s SO simple… Care for others.
