So Many Gowns, So Little Time - Choosing a Bridal Gown That Flatters You

So you're at the bridal shop and there are so many gowns - how do you know what's right for you? Well, first, what body type are you? Not every gown style flatters every body type. Once you know your body type, it makes dress shopping so much easier! There are so many body types, here I'll just be addressing the main body types or most commonly known body types.

Are you large busted?
A heavier top needs to be minimized, meaning you want to draw the attention away from the ta-ta's. An A-Line gown or Ballroom style gown works great because the gowns are fuller at the bottom giving a more evenly proportioned appearance. With or without sleeves, even! Just make sure that the bodice of the gown holds you well, but not so tight that you're busting out of the bust! Keep in mind, too, that the more decoration that you have at the top is going to draw that much more attention to your bust. It's better to have decoration flow evenly through the gown or more so towards the bottom for the best effect.

Is your body more "boxy" or athletic?
If your hips and bust are relatively the same size and your waist is "hidden" then you fit this body type. You could get away with wearing almost any type of gown that can give you the appearance of a waist. The A-Line, Ballroom, Sheath or Mermaid are a few that would look great on this body type. A Sheath gown is a fitting gown all the way down to your feet, where the Mermaid gown is almost the same, but it flares about the knee area. The A-Line and Ballroom have waists, so maybe a higher waist like a baby-doll bodice or a lower waist to rest at the hip would be a great way to enhance your bust or hips without bringing notice to the area where you have no waist.

For the full-figured bride
There's nothing wrong with being full-figured because women (like me) have curves! A Ballroom gown or Empire style gown would be right up your alley because it will accentuate your curves smoothly while giving the appearance of an even proportion as well. Fitted bodices are nothing to be afraid of, just make sure that you are fitted well in areas that are meant to be snug. It's not flattering to have the "busting at the seams" appearance, believe you me (I've been there and done that!).

Do you have the coveted hourglass figure?
If your bust and hips are the same size with a little-bitty waist, then my dear you are an hourglass! You would look smashing in a Sheath or Mermaid gown. These styles will totally show off that lovely figure of yours, whether you have sleeves or not. Once again my advice is to make sure the dress is snug enough to hold you up, but not so snug that you are popping out.

Why a Fall wedding? What a beautiful color palette Fall brings! The maroons, browns, golds, tans ... leaves changing, crisp air - nature provides so much beauty for a wedding in the Fall. There's so much you can do with a Fall wedding theme, from delicate leaves on your dress to watermarked harvest scenes on your invitations and floating fall leaves with tea lights in water globes. If I could redo my weddings I would certainly have had a fall wedding, that's for sure!

Some great color themes for a Fall wedding are darker shades of red like maroons, burgundy with shades of browns and golds to match the leaves of Fall. I've also seen darker shades of orange done for weddings, too. I've included a few swatches below to give you some ideas for Fall colors:

Planning Your Wedding - Timelines & Checklists

Traditionally, weddings follow timelines for booking vendors, putting together your bridal party, sending out invitations, etc. These are certainly good guides to follow, but keep in mind nothing is set in stone when you are planning your own wedding. My first wedding was planned in 6 months, my 2nd in 3. You can bend the rules where you need to, but something's you absolutely want to take care of as soon as a date is set. Why? Because you would be surprised how fast photographers, venues, caterers and other must-haves for your wedding will book up. As soon as you set your date, book your vendors and venues if you want to make sure you are getting what you want!
Right off the bat you will want to buy a wedding planning binder, decide on a theme, research your vendors and venues, research wedding planners if you'll be using one and find out how far in advance orders must be made for gowns, favors, food, etc.

6-12 months before your wedding:
Announce your engagement - newspaper and/or engagement party
Set your budget and decide who pays for what
Decide your time and place for the wedding
Book your photographer before you announce your engagement. Many photographers offer engagement portraits with their wedding packages and this will give you a beautiful portrait for your newspaper announcement and engagement party!
Choose and book your venues for the wedding and reception
Book your vendors: caterers, DJ and/or band, vidoegrapher, stylists, transportation services, lodging, bakery, etc.
Decide on your scheme and colors since many decisions will be based on your scheme
Choose your bridal party and decide who will be responsible for what
Choose your wedding gown and the bridesmaids gowns - there will be ordering and fittings required more than likely so you want to give yourself plenty of time.
Choose your guest list since caterers and the bakery will need to know how many guests to expect and can accommodate the number in their estimates
Choose your bridal party gifts and find out how far in advance they will need to be ordered
Hire your wedding planner if you will be using one

4-6 months before the wedding
By now your gowns should be in so time for a fitting
Decide on the men's apparel
Choose your wedding rings
Choose your honeymoon destination and book it, get passports if you will be honeymooning abroad
Order favors, gifts, guestbook, and accessories
Have the mother-of-the-bride and future mother-in-law shop for and/or order their attire for the wedding
Order announcements, invitations, save the dates, RSVP cards, thank you cards and maps
Bridal registries are a must!
Confirm bookings
Select your music for the reception - especially the bride and groom's song!
Get with your stylist for hair and makeup decisions
Finalize your menu selection with the caterer and your wedding cake with your bakery
Finalize your rehearsal arrangements including dinner and transportation
Find out the information needed for your wedding license and make sure you send out for anything you don't have, such as birth certificates, etc. Some states still require blood tests so you may need to schedule those as well.

2 months before the wedding
Address your invitations (if you didn't have the printer address them) and get them in the mail
Finalize all your decisions with your vendors and venues such as menu selection, music selection, hair and makeup, limos, etc. Confirm all dates and times and remember to leave enough time with the hair and makeup for all the bridal party and still make it to the wedding on time!
Confirm all arrangements for the rehearsal, rehearsal dinner and transportation for the rehearsal.
Confirm all lodging
Finalize your wedding license information and find out when you will need to get your license (varies state-to-state)
Bridal luncheon with your bridesmaids and the mothers
Order flowers

1 month before the wedding
Final fitting for gowns
Make sure you that all orders have arrived for gifts, favors, accessories, etc.
By now you should be receiving RSVP's and/or gifts so start your guest list and if you will be doing seating assignments, begin arranging seating
Send thank you notes for gifts you are receiving
Confirm the men's apparel and arrival date/time
Confirm the flowers and arrival date/time
Take care of legal needs such as name changes, social security forms for changing the name on your social security card, forms for changing your drivers' license, finalizing the wedding license, passports (if you will be honeymooning abroad), etc.
Prepare your wedding announcement for the newspaper - some have forms to fill out, others you can just e-mail or call them with your information. After the wedding they will need a photo of you and the groom
Check with your jewelry and make sure that your wedding rings fit - find someone trustworthy to hold on to the rings until the wedding (usually the best man)
2 weeks before the wedding
Address and stamp the wedding announcements to be mailed on the wedding day
Re-check that all favors, gifts, apparel, accessories, etc have been delivered
Meet with your photographer and vidoegrapher to go over your portraits, album and what you would like photographed and videoed
1 week before the wedding
Contact guests who have not RSVP 'd just to be sure
Final guest counts need to be given to the venue and caterer
Make sure you have your wedding license and any other documents needed such as passports
Make sure all gowns have arrived and fit
Re-confirm all honeymoon arrangements and make sure you have your plane tickets
Bachelorette Party! Do you really want to have it the night before the wedding? I think not!

1 day before the wedding
Rehearsal and dinner with the wedding party
Confirm times and events such as portrait sittings, flowers, men's apparel, etc with the bridal party
Make sure the rings are still in safe hands
Arrange for someone to receive the flowers that should be delivered the morning of the wedding day
Arrange for someone to receive the men's apparel that should be delivered either today or the wedding day
Make final arrangements for the transportation and who will ride with who, etc.

Wedding Day
Hair and makeup
Confirm that the rings are still in safe hands and ready for the ceremony
Present the wedding officiate with your wedding license before the ceremony
Mail out wedding announcements
Get married!

So You're A Bride - How Exciting .... and Stressful?

Congratulations on your engagement! I know you are thinking of everything - that perfect wedding, the perfect honeymoon, the perfect dream you've envisioned since you were a little girl. And then ... reality sets in. Do I have a formal wedding or informal? Wedding planner or do it myself? Big or little? Budget, budget, budget. Shall we just fly off to Vegas or maybe get a Bahamas Wedding package? And the Engagement party, the bridal shower and ooh-la-la the Bachelorette Party. Wedding theme or no? And who am I going to cut out of the bridal party without getting my head ripped off? And OMG - my gown - what do I want in a gown and when should I start looking?? Aaaarrrrrggghhhhh. And your head is spinning .... so much to do!

First thing, let me tell you from experience - as soon as you set your date start calling and reserving your venues, photographers, caterers... you would be surprised how many of these have a year or more waiting list!

Second - get yourself a good wedding planning binder, even if you are hiring a Wedding Planner. You can make one yourself or you can buy one that's ready for you. Your binder will be your life until this wedding - you can store all of your contacts, receipts, contracts and notes in there. To make your own, simply buy a nice thick 3-ring binder with some blank paper, folders with pockets, and address book and a calendar. It usually works out the same price-wise whether you buy one that's pre-made or put one together yourself. The benefit of putting one together on your own is you have more control (and usually more paper and folders). But, if you are interested in buying one, there's a few I found below that might be what you're looking for.

So that's what this blog is about, helping you keep some organization (and sanity) while planning your wedding. I've been married twice (no - there will be no 3rd time's a charm for me thank you anyway), I've helped friends with their weddings, I've attended a LOT of them and I watched Bridezillas (yes, I made it through every episode without throwing something at my t.v. or laptop).

Can I just give you a bit of advice? You can get what you want, you deserve to get what you want, but please - DO watch a few episodes of Bridezillas and know that this is NOT behavior that is looked upon well. Have you ever heard that saying, something about honey attracting more bees than vinegar? Yeah - it's true.

So first things first - get your planner together and start putting together the ideas you envision for your wedding so you can get-to-moving on finding out what you can reserve for your date before the date fills up. Work on that this week and next week we'll move on to the time-lines and how much time you should really give yourself and where you can cut time/budget. Fun, fun and more fun. Until then - don't throw anything away - keep it in your binder! Yes, the majority of people on this earth are honest and word-binding human beings, but you can never be too careful, especially when these people want some money upfront :-)

So - wedding binders. Take a look at a few of these - I'll be adding some pages with links to more resources as well as a "shop my vendors" site to help you along the way, too.
