CEO to ‘significantly downsize’ Sesame Workshop after more than 200 employees revealed plans to unionize

Sesame Workshop, the non-profit behind Sesame Street, is cutting staff in an effort to “downsize significantly”, its president and CEO, Sherrie Rollins Westin, told employees this week.
The news of layoffs at the organization came just shortly after more than 200 employees at Sesame Workshop revealed their plans to unionize and comes several months after Warner Bros Discovery decided not to renew the distribution deal for new episodes of Sesame Street, the long-running, beloved children’s program.

In an email to staff on Wednesday, Rollins Westin told employees that Sesame Workshop was not “immune to the current economic challenges inherent to the drastically changing media landscape” and that the end of their distribution deal combined with policy changes affecting their federal funding made them “confronted with a perfect storm”.

“These factors, among others, have left us with a significant budget gap that we must solve as we head into the next fiscal year,” she added.
Rollins Westin said that the company’s largest single expense is people and benefits, and that the company therefore must “downsize significantly and make what we hope will be temporary changes to our benefits and bonus program”.....

UC has launched a “fact-finding mission” into the issue.

For years, Maylei Blackwell has worked to lift up Indigenous and Chicana women’s voices as a UCLA professor who identified as a mixed-race person of Thai and Cherokee heritage. Her research was widely cited, her use of oral histories praised. Her most recent book was poised to receive a prestigious award last year from a Native American and Indigenous studies association.
Then came a bombshell revelation.
The scholars association abruptly rescinded the award after allegations surfaced last spring that Blackwell’s claims of Cherokee heritage, based on family stories, were phony. In a public apology, Blackwell confessed that her research triggered by the allegations found her mother was white. She vowed to seek repair for harms caused. The furor reverberated nationally after Charlene Villaseñor Black, chair of Blackwell’s Department of Chicana/o and Central American Studies, posted a public message of gratitude to the Indigenous scholars who brought the issue to light.
Now the University of California, following several cases of questioned Native American identity over the last few years, has launched a “fact-finding mission” on the issue, according to UC Academic Senate Chair Steven W. Cheung. UC provided no details on the scope of the effort. But the action comes after UC Native American scholars held their first symposium last year on what they say is a growing problem of what are called “Pretendians” — pretend Indians — in the UC system and across academia nationwide.
“We just decided that people need to start talking about this in the system or it’s going to keep happening,” said Phenocia Bauerle, UC Berkeley director of Native American Student Development, who has helped lead efforts for action. “There are so many people pretending to be Native, so I do think people who are claiming it, who are building their careers on it, should have to prove it.”

The murder of a U.S. Border Patrol agent has unveiled a possible link between a “transgender vegan cult” and a string of murders across the U.S.

On January 20th, Inauguration Day, U.S. Border Patrol agent David Maland, 44, and other agents pulled over 21-year-old Teresa “Milo” Youngblut and German citizen Felix “Ophelia” Bauckholt in northern Vermont, near the Canadian border.

Youngblut quickly opened fire on the agents, and they all engaged in a back-and-forth shootout.

Maland and Bauckholt were killed in the incident, and Youngblut was injured in the crossfire.

The 21-year-old was finally arrested in Washington last week. She now faces one count of using a deadly weapon while assaulting a United States Border Patrol agent and one count of using and discharging a firearm during that assault.

A judge recently ordered Youngblut to be held without bail until the preliminary hearing on February 7th.

Federal investigators have now expanded their focus to 32-year-old Michelle Zajko, who police say purchased the handguns used in Maland’s shooting.

Zajko, a biological man who identifies as a woman, is also believed to be a person of interest in the 2023 murder of his parents, Richard and Rita Zajko, who were both shot to death in their Pennsylvania home. ......

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A Houston college student sentenced for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021 breach at the U.S. Capitol is one of the alleged victims of an FBI agent who was indicted for theft.
Alexander Fan was sentenced to 12 months probation for trespassing during a sentencing hearing on Friday. His attorney, Mark Thering, said he pleaded guilty and expressed genuine remorse in a statement to the court.
Fan's home was searched after his arrest in June 2023. Court records filed ahead of the hearing state, "the next day, Fan reported to the FBI that some items--including cash and silver bars--had gone missing from his bedroom. These items were not seized pursuant to the warrants."
Thering said the loss was several thousand dollars, and his client never expected his report to materialize.
"He was under the assumption, well, that was the last he'd hear from them," Thering said.
On Jan. 31, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced the arrest of Nicholas Anthony Williams, a Houston FBI agent.

"It's commendable. The agency took the lead and took my client's allegations seriously," Thering said.
According to the charges, Williams took money and property from multiple homes while executing search warrants from March 2022 to July 2023. He is also accused of stealing FBI cell phones and lying about charges on his government-issued credit card.
In response, Williams' defense attorney, Chip Lewis, told ABC13, "Nick has cooperated with the authorities from the outset of this investigation and will continue to do so."
Prosecutors have not disclosed the number of victims or how much more was stolen during searches. The indictment states Williams allegedly converted the money or property to his personal use.
"We put our faith in public officials to do the right thing," Thering said. "But I don't think it's indicative of any police agency or any federal agency."
If convicted, Williams faces up to 10 years in federal prison and up to a $250,000 fine.

It was a busy day in Washington on Wednesday as the intelligence bureaucracy tried to foment a national security panic over Russian nukes in space in hopes of ramming through the Ukraine aid package and killing reforms designed to curb its power to spy on Americans.

Lest you think that sounds crazy, consider the timing of the panic provocations, which came almost immediately after House Speaker Mike Johnson said he and other Republicans weren’t going to be “rushed” into approving the $61 billion aid package for Ukraine. It also came at the precise moment — just coincidentally! — that the House was debating reforms to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, set to expire in April, that would end warrantless surveillance of Americans, which of course the White House and intelligence agencies oppose.

All of it just goes to show that the most serious threat facing America isn’t Russian nukes in space or overseas terrorist plots, it’s the political class in Washington and our intelligence agencies that think they’re above the law.

Here’s what happened. On Wednesday, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner issued a cryptic warning about a “national security threat” related to a “destabilizing foreign military capability” so grave that President Biden should declassify all information about it immediately. Michigan: Beer-toting customer shot at robbery suspect 7 times

CASSOPOLIS, Mich. (WOOD) — Newly-released surveillance video shows a Cass County gas station customer firing seven shots at a suspected armed robber, all while holding a six-pack of light beer.

The July 27 shooting at the Stone Lake Marathon Mini Mart seriously injured the suspect, who had armed himself with a box cutter.
Three weeks later, the customer is waiting to learn if he’ll face criminal charges.
“You know why I’m here” is how the robber announced himself that day, according to police reports.

The gas station surveillance video showed the customer holding a six-pack of Miller Lite as the suspect, dressed in black, walked in.
The suspect, identified in court records as Cordelius Anthony Martin, 35, of Dowagiac, pulled a mask over his face.

Another angle showed him approaching the store clerk.

Police said he threatened the clerk with a box cutter.

The customer, who has a valid concealed carry permit, told police he couldn’t see what was in the robber’s hand, but he could see the look of fear on the clerk’s face.

Video showed the customer pulling a handgun and firing three shots, then another three, all while holding the six-pack.

It appeared one of those shots hit a liquor bottle.
The customer fired the final shot several seconds later.
Bullets struck the robber in the arm, back and face.

The customer told police the suspect fell to the floor but was crawling toward him.
That, he told police, is when he ran to his car to get another loaded magazine.
He held the suspect at gunpoint until police arrived.

Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz said he is waiting for police to finish the investigation before deciding whether to file criminal charges against the customer.

“In Michigan, obviously, we do have defense of others as part of the law in Michigan, that you can defend others if they’re in a situation that there’s dangerous force being used against them,” he said. “And certainly in this case, we’ll be looking at the facts in regard to that.”
Target 8 reached out to the man who fired the shots, who lives about four blocks from the Marathon station, but he declined to comment.

The victim of the robbery wouldn’t go on camera but said: “He saved my life.”
The suspect was released from the hospital on Wednesday and arraigned on three charges, including armed robbery.

He is being held on a $100,000 bond. Because he’s a three-time felon, he could face up to life in prison.

One day after California green-lighted a massive expansion of driverless robotaxis in San Francisco, the implications became clear.
At about 11 p.m. Friday, as many as 10 Cruise driverless taxis blocked two narrow streets in the center of the city’s lively North Beach bar and restaurant district. All traffic came to a standstill on Vallejo Street and around two corners on Grant. Human-driven cars sat stuck behind and in between the robotaxis, which might as well have been boulders: no one knew how to move them.
The cars sat motionless with parking lights flashing for 15 minutes, then woke up and moved on, witnesses said.

Aaron Peskin, who represents North Beach on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, was flooded with texts, emails and videos from constituents as the robotaxis, programmed with artificial intelligence software, sat unresponsive. In one video, zeroing in on a robotaxi’s “driver” seat, a man says “this is what our country has come to.”
Cruise blamed cell phone carriers for the problem. At 11:01 p.m. Friday, Peskin sent a text message to Cruise government affairs manager Lauren Wilson. At 8:25 a.m. Saturday, she texted back: “As I understand it, outside lands impacted LTE cell connectivity and ability for RA advisors to route cars.” Outside Lands is a three-day music festival held in Golden Gate Park, four miles from North Beach.

The situation is loaded with irony, as the California Public Utilities Commission on Thursday voted 3-1 amid great public controversy to allow a massive robotaxi expansion. The vote allows General Motors-owned Cruise and Waymo, owned by Google’s Alphabet, to charge fares for driverless service and grow the fleet as large as they’d like. Cruise has said it plans eventually to deploy thousands of robotaxis in San Francisco.
City officials in San Francisco, from the mayor’s office down, have been fighting the move, with officials saying the robotaxi industry needs to fix problems that endanger the public first before further expanding the business. The city’s fire department has logged more than 55 cases of robotaxis interfering with first responders. Fire Chief Jeanine Nicholson has repeatedly said Cruise and Waymo are getting in firefighters’ way and their technology is “not ready for prime time.”
The CPUC decided to go ahead anyway. One of the three yes votes was cast by Commissioner John Reynolds, who served as head lawyer at Cruise before appointed to the CPUC by Gov. Gavin Newsom.
The no vote came from Commissioner Genevieve Shiroma, who said the companies should explain the problems and how they plan to fix them first. .........

Gray squirrels were once a rare breed mostly found in forests. Now they are abundant in the city's parks.

Minneapolis parks are swarming with gray squirrels — those fat-cheeked, bushy-tailed tree rats that stalk picnics and snatch Doritos out of people's hands.
They're smart. They're audacious. And they might be overpopulated.
Reader Dennis Becker wanted to know if it was true that one of the founders of the Minneapolis park system, longtime superintendent Theodore Wirth, had imported gray squirrels to Minneapolis from afar. He sought answers from Curious Minnesota, the Star Tribune's reporting project fueled by reader questions.

"I heard they went around shooting all the red squirrels so they could have the gray squirrels," said Becker, who suggested it might be time to shoot the grays now. "They're such a nuisance, you know. They chew on everything and there's so many of them."
The answer is, amazingly, yes. Wirth did go out of his way to supplant one squirrel with another.

That's according to old newspaper articles, Minneapolis Park Board records and local park historian David C. Smith. Wirth, who did many heavy-handed things to reshape nature in pursuit of the perfect park, was actually quite proud of himself for the accomplishment.
It's hard to imagine parks today without the common gray squirrel — though it is not clear how much of the Twin Cities' urban squirrel population can be attributed to Wirth's effort. They were once a rare breed mostly found in forests, a sought-after lawn ornament for budding urban parks around the country......

Black News Channel, a cable news network that went on the air two years ago to provide an alternative look at news from Black Americans’ perspective, is shutting down, the outlet’s chief executive told employees on Friday.

“Due to challenging market conditions and global financial pressures, we have been unable to meet our financial goals, and the timeline afforded to us has run out,” Princell Hair, who has been chief executive since July 2020, wrote in a memo to staff. “Effective immediately, BNC will cease live production and file for bankruptcy.”

Black News Channel’s abrupt closure comes just a year after the network revamped its lineup with high-profile commentators like Charles Blow and Marc Lamont Hill, and added a new morning show. It also shows the difficulties traditional cable-TV channels face as cord-cutting continues and consumers turn away from the channel dial.

The network, which was co-founded by former Oklahoma congressman J.C. Watts, is largely backed by automotive-parts billionaire and Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan. Mr. Khan had explored a sale of some or all of the network in recent months, people familiar with the matter said. Mr. Khan, who has invested roughly $50 million in BNC, won’t invest any further, according to some of the people. A spokesman for Mr. Khan had no comment.

By 5 p.m. ET on Friday, the network will start running old programming, which will last through the rest of this month, according to one of the people familiar with the matter.

BNC’s more than 200 employees didn’t receive their paychecks this week, the people said. They won’t receive severance pay or benefits beyond the end of the month, the people said.
“Arrangements have been made for the company to pay all earned but unpaid wages to laid-off employees,” the board of BNC said in a statement Friday evening.

Under Mr. Hair’s leadership, BNC landed distribution deals with most pay-TV providers, including Comcast Corp.’s Xfinity, Dish Network Corp. and DirecTV. The network said it reached roughly 50 million households.

BNC didn’t receive fees from distributors for carrying its channel, according to one of the people familiar with the matter. Instead, the network relied on advertising revenue and funding from its backer—a practice that is commonplace for most upstart cable channels.

The network’s viewership hit a peak of 80,000 this week, according to Nielsen data, as it aired wall-to-wall coverage of confirmation hearings for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman nominated to the Supreme Court.

Mr. Hair, a TV veteran whose resume includes CBS, CNN, Turner Broadcasting and NBC Sports, had looked to shake up the cable-TV news landscape, which has seen audiences divided among major networks like CNN, Fox News and MSNBC. Millions of Americans are not getting the second doses of their Covid-19 vaccines, and their ranks are growing.

More than five million people, or nearly 8 percent of those who got a first shot of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, have missed their second doses, according to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That is more than double the rate among people who got inoculated in the first several weeks of the nationwide vaccine campaign.

Even as the country wrestles with the problem of millions of people who are wary about getting vaccinated at all, local health authorities are confronting an emerging challenge of ensuring that those who do get inoculated are doing so fully.

The reasons vary for why people are missing their second shots. In interviews, some said they feared the side effects, which can include flulike symptoms. Others said they felt that they were sufficiently protected with a single shot.

Those attitudes were expected, but another hurdle has been surprisingly prevalent. A number of vaccine providers have canceled second-dose appointments because they ran out of supply or didn’t have the right brand in stock ......
