I do like a good mystery, and Christine Falls fills the bill. There is an unnecessary death and an outright murder. The mystery, however is not whodunit, but why.

Quirke (Quirk? Quirky?) is pathologist at a Dublin hospital morgue. He drops in to the morgue one evening and sees his almost-brother (Quirk had been raised from boyhood by Mal’s parents) altering a death certificate to read “pulmonary embolism,” when, in reality, Christine Falls had bled to death during a home birth. She could have been saved if she had been taken to a hospital.

When Quirke arrives at the morgue the next day, both the body and the file are gone, and there is no record of the birth or the baby. Fearing that Mal may be covering up an “indiscretion,” Quirke begins to follow leads and visits the midwife in whose home the woman died. The day after Quirke confronts Mal with what he has learned, and mentions that the midwife has a written record of all her cases, she is found murdered and her home ransacked.

Quirke continues to follow leads, putting himself and others at great physical and psychological risk. He eventually uncovers a 20-year-old transatlantic baby-selling business in which his and Mal’s family, their in-laws, and even church leaders are embroiled.

To tell much more would spoil the suspense, should you choose to read the book—but if you do, be prepared for startling revelations.

A teen boy who has always felt like an outsider with regards to his life finds out by accident that he is in fact a necromancer with powers that allow him to raise the dead. On top of that bombshell, he also finds out that the head evil necromancer of Seattle is out to get him. It seems like a goofy premise, and it is. The ridiculousness of the storyline is what makes this book work, however. It had enough humor wove through which kept the creepy factor in check. There are some loose ends that annoy me because they aren't tied up in a neat bow at the end, but overall the story is a catching tale that I would suggest to anyone wanting a light teen fiction read.

Serendipity: A Novel by Louise Shaffer

If I had to pick one word to describe this book I would say it would have to be GUILT. The story follows three generations of women who have all done less than stellar things in their life, but instead of dealing with their mistakes in mature and adult ways, decided instead to let things fester and grow to the point that the third generation Carrie finds herself having a near-nervous breakdown and in need of answers.

This tale was captivating. By the time I was into the third chapter I couldn't put it down. I was annoyed at times with the characters, but end the end I was happy that I had read it. Even though I would say this book is thought provoking, it is still what I would consider a quick read. It has touches of historical fiction, but not enough to really put it in the genre. If you enjoy mother-daughter stories, this would be a great one to check out.

** spoiler alert ** Overbite is the sequel to Insatiable, so be warned that there will be spoilers for book 1 in this review!

Overbite begins about six months after the events of Insatiable end. Meena Harper’s ex-boyfriend, Lucien Antonescu, turned out to be the son of Dracula and the prince of darkness. Meena has decided to swear off dating vampires, but she just can’t shake her feelings for Lucien. She’s convinced that there is some good within him and that he’s not 100% evil. Even though he doesn’t have a soul, Meena believes Lucien is capable of love.

To complicate matters, Meena has been asked to join the Palatine Guard, which is a secret demon-hunting unit of the Vatican, because of her special gift (the ability to predict how people will die). Lucien has gone into hiding, and a new breed of vampires has emerged that not only drinks human blood but also feasts on human flesh. Meena’s co-worker, Alaric Wulf, is determined to protect her from Lucien, while at the same time, Lucien is trying to protect Meena from the new breed of vampires. Meena’s loyalties are tested, and she is torn between following her head and her heart.

I loved Insatiable, so I was eager to read Overbite. It was a fast-paced and suspenseful read with bits of humor and romance mixed in. Alaric was my favorite character—his personality reminded me a little of Booth from the TV series Bones. I have mixed feelings about the way the book ended. It seemed a little out of character for Meena to do what she did, and the abrupt ending surprised me. Overall, though, I would recommend Overbite to anyone looking for an entertaining read with humor, forbidden romance, a love triangle, and a lot of action!

Columbine by Dave Cullen

Award-winning journalist Dave Cullen has followed the story of Columbine for the past 10 years, and this book is a result of his exhaustive research on the horrifying event, its devastating effect on the town, and the chilling backstory of the killers responsible for the tragedy.

This was a disturbing yet riveting read. It made me sick to my stomach to read some of the details from the killers' journals, websites, and videotapes as they planned their attack. The massacre was described in vivid detail as well, which was difficult to read. At times it was so intense that I had to take a break from reading, but I returned to the book because it was so well-written and researched, and I needed to read on to see if there was any way to make sense of this unspeakable tragedy.

Much of what I thought I knew about the Columbine massacre was actually not true. Cullen dispels many of the myths created by the media about the killers' motives and the events of that terrible day. He details the mistakes and coverups that plagued the police investigation in the years following the massacre as well as the struggles faced by survivors and the families of those who died.

The information in this book is not presented in chronological order. Different narratives from before, during, and after the event are pieced together seamlessly. Cullen presented everything with tremendous compassion for the community and everyone affected.

Columbine is a thought-provoking read which provides a complete picture of the tragedy from multiple perspectives.

I’ve been reading lots of mysteries, stories of the Holocaust, and accounts of conflicts in the Middle East, so I thought it was time to kick back and read a Western. I picked a winner.

In 1949, Jack Schaefer’s Shane was published and was soon made into what is arguably the best Western movie of all time. Monte Walsh follows in the tradition.

A teenager, Monte Walsh runs from an abusive home situation. With the help of a few kind-hearted souls (and a few not so kind-hearted) Monte makes his way to Red Fork Ranch and eventually manages to hire on to a trail crew moving longhorns to market. With experience, he develops into a top-notch itinerant trailrider. A few years in, he meets Chet Rollins and the two form a deep friendship as well as a matchless working partnership. If there is anywhere a “horse that can’t be rode,” Chet will rope it, and Monte, observing “Shucks, it’s a horse, ain’t it?” will not only ride it, but shape it into a dependable cowpony.

When an Eastern syndicate buys up land and hires Cal Brennan, an experienced trail boss, as manager, Cal forms his ranch crew from top trail riders that he has worked with, including Monte and Chet. Thus begins the Slash Y (/Y) era. This tightly knit crew rides herd and copes with drought, blizzard, range fire, rustlers, bar brawls (most of which they start!)—whatever comes along.

As the range begins to be fenced, English beef cattle replace longhorns, and the crew ages, Chet marries (and what a wedding celebration!) and becomes a businessman and civic leader. Monte, however, is a cowboy. Period. To the end. The bitter end.

Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes

The book that inspired the movie “Charly” is a truly heartbreaking piece of 20^th century American literature. The book is basically a set of progress reports told by the main character, Charlie Gordon, as he sets out on a journey to live a second life. Charlie is a mentally retarded adult who works in a bakery. He suffices day-to-day but is offered a chance to essentially get a new brain by a group of scientists.

Charlie elects to go through with the surgery, which has first been performed on a lab mouse named Algernon. Both Charlie and Algernon both begin learning at a monumental rate to the point where people once shunned Charlie now fear his intelligence. The news is broken to Charlie that he might revert back to his former state, though, and his world begins to crumble.

Like “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” and other books of the time period, the story is a critique of mid-20^th century medical science and the way the medical community (and society in general) treated the mentally impaired.

Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me by Chelsea Handler, et. al

I’m a big fan of the E! network show Chelsea Lately, and I have read and enjoyed all of comedian Chelsea Handler’s books so far. Her latest book is a little different from the others in that her friends, family, and co-workers are given a chance to tell their side of the story for a change. Chelsea enjoys playing tricks on those closest to her, and sooner or later they all fall prey to her shenanigans. Her elaborate practical jokes are described in this book by the embarrassed “victims”. Each chapter is written by a different friend, family member, or co-worker, and Chelsea adds a short commentary at the end of each person’s story. Despite all the pranks, they still love Chelsea.

As a fan of the show and a reader of Chelsea’s other books, most of the people who contributed to this book were familiar names to me already. It was interesting to learn more about their lives and experience each person’s unique brand of humor. In the audiobook version, each person narrates their own chapter, but surprisingly, Chelsea does not narrate her own comments. That disappointed me a little bit because I would have loved to hear her deliver some of those lines. Nevertheless, I found the audiobook to be laugh-out-loud funny and would recommend it to any fans of Chelsea Lately looking for an entertaining read. Fair warning – there is quite a bit of crass humor, so if that bothers you, this may not be the best choice. Otherwise, enjoy!

If, as Mark Twain once said, a person who won’t read has no advantage over one who can’t, then surely a person who remains unchanged by what they read is just as disadvantaged. In her memoir, Tolstoy and the Purple Chair, author Nina Sankovitch proves how much a thoughtful reader can milk out of a good book, sharing her experience of reading one book a day for a whole year.

After the devastating loss of her oldest sister, Sankovitch reads her way out of grief, fear and depression back to hope and promise. I know it sounds like a heavy theme, but her shared experience is must reading that will delight all bibliophiles. For reluctant readers who say they don’t have time to read, Sankovitch’s memoir is like a baited hook, demonstrating that a well-read life is a well-lived life, especially when we think about what we read.

This isn’t a work of literary snobbery; Sankovitch finds wisdom in popular mysteries and contemporary authors as well as classics. As you follow her year of reading, you’ll experience her steady recovery, not in psychobabble, but in earnest and profound descriptions of how stories and characters connect with real life.

If you’ve ever felt the loss of a loved one, don’t be surprised to find the pangs of your own heartbreak mingled with the author’s as you read. Her words are a sweet balm for one of life’s most universal experiences. By the end of the book, Sankovitch feels like an intimate friend, having shared in glittering detail what all readers love about books—their ability to transport, comfort, elevate, encourage, befriend, and finally, to chasten us into better people who can deal with all that life has to throw at us.

This one is worth reading again and again, especially as a motivating kick-start for anyone who isn’t setting aside enough time to read. In our achievement-driven world, no one is going to reward us for making time to read and think. But we’ll pay a price for not having done so.

Heather Wells was once a teen pop sensation. That was until she lost her music career, her money, her boyfriend, and her perfect size 2 pant size. Now she’s the assistant director of a residence Hall at New York College, living in an apartment owned by her ex-boyfriend’s brother, and insisting that her size 12 is not fat. (It’s the size of the average American woman!)

Life gets even more interesting for Heather when freshman girls start dying at her residence hall. The police say the deaths were accidents - the result of naïve freshmen elevator surfing. But girls don’t elevator surf, right? Especially, shy quiet ones! Heather begins some investigating on her own to get to the bottom of what really happened. As she starts uncovering some clues, she finds that her own life may be at risk.

This is a fun read. It has a touch of romance and lots of laughs, along with enough mystery and suspense to keep you turning the pages quickly wanting to know how everything ends. I’m eager to start reading Cabot’s sequel, Size 14 Is Not Fat Either, to see what other adventures Heather Wells may encounter. I would recommend this book not only to fans of chick lit and Cabot’s other books, but also to fans of light-hearted mysteries.

A prissy reader might be tempted to rename this memoir within the first 50 pages. Something like Food, Drugs and Cusswords would do. Or, buoyed by a highly-developed moral code, one might set it aside in favor of something sweeter on the palette. But that would be like foregoing a spectacular feast of honest food prepared by a famous chef like…well, like Gabrielle Hamilton herself.

Hamilton’s memoir is a delicious account of her arduous journey from adolescence to adulthood, hurdling obstacles and carrying baggage that might have put a lot of us on the sidelines of life. Instead, the author matures into talented writer and chef/restaurant owner, who starts her own unconventional family and begins the balancing act known to legions of hard-working women.

Thinking of glamour? Well, forget that. Her journey to chefdom didn’t include a lofty chef’s school. It was made on an itinerant apprenticeship of inauspicious greasy spoons, summer camps, catering gigs, and a hungry, sometimes harrowing traipse through Europe as a young adult. None of it paid well, but it did form an unpretentious chef who can simultaneously write and cook the glory and complexity of unfussy, unadulterated food and of life itself.

Keep your dictionary handy. All but the very most sophisticated of foodies will need it to figure out what’s in the oven or on the stovetop and table. Read to the end and take turns shuddering, gasping, salivating and aching your way through a gritty memoir filled with tenderness, honesty, self-reliance and hope.

It is so exciting to pick up a book with little expectation, only to be blown away by its originality, humor, and presentation. When I heard that Lucy Hawking and the renowned Stephen Hawking had coauthored a children’s book, I admit I was a little skeptical as to whether this title would connect well with its audience. Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised. George’s Secret Key to the Universe put me in mind of Judy Moody’s humor combined with Franny K. Stein’s passion for science and adventure. Supernovas, black holes, nebulas, and comets are just some of the subjects touched on throughout George’s explorations. Along with its wonderful illustrations and vivid full color photos of our universe, this title lends itself to a wide audience. Kids who generally roam the nonfiction section will appreciate Hawking’s focus on facts and practical application, while fiction lovers will find George’s adventure both fun and exciting. This book also presents a positive message about the importance of taking care of our planet, and how technology should be a tool used to better humanity rather than destroy it.

Do not be intimidated by the thickness of this book; larger print, illustrations, and photos make this an easier read for younger readers, but older readers will find the science simply fascinating. Though some of the science may be a little above younger readers' full comprehension, I believe they will still be captivated with the pure expanse of our solar system and be encouraged to learn more about the universe we live in. I am very excited to get a hold of the next titles in this series: George’s Cosmic Adventure, and George and the Big Bang.

Rachel, a 30-year-old attorney in New York City, has always been “the good girl.” She’s been a loyal companion to beautiful and outgoing Darcy, her childhood best friend, even though Darcy is fiercely competitive and always seems to be trying to overshadow Rachel. On Rachel’s thirtieth birthday, Darcy throws her a party. Rachel has a bit too much to drink and ends up in bed with her friend from law school, Dex, who also happens to be Darcy’s fiancé. If it were just a one-time drunken mistake, maybe Rachel could forgive herself. But soon she and Dex secretly start to see each other more often, and Rachel must decide whether to be loyal to Darcy or to follow her heart to be with Dex. Giffin created flawed but empathetic characters and added some shades of gray to a situation that would normally seem black-and-white. Darcy was a somewhat one-dimensional and unlikeable character in this novel, but the sequel, Something Blue, focuses on her story and further develops her character.

This was a terrific audiobook. The story captivated and held my attention the whole time. It was pretty fun how I would get lulled into the story and I would find myself in a certain mood and drawn into the "normal" aspects of the relationships discussed in the book and then all of a sudden the "fantasy" elements would just pop up, often in abrupt ways. It was funny and not awkward, just caught me off guard with the audiobook version.

This is a great read for someone wanting a mix of chick lit and romance with a little magic thrown in. It reminded me a little of Chocolat (which is a book I love!).
