The following is a selection from "The Ether Ship Mystery (and Its Solution)" by Meade Layne, oft-forgot godfather of modern UFOlogy and one of the last great mystic-scientists. A complete version of "The Ether Ship Mystery" is printed by Borderland Sciences, available through its online catalog.

Etheria is here – if we know what here means! Along-side, inside, outside of our world. Because our world, that is, the so-called dense matter of the objects in our world, is a rarefication. It is spaced out like a vast net – a net with enormous meshes. Imagine, if you will, a net of wire with meshes a mile wide. Would not wind and water flow through that net as if it did not exist? A little friction, very, very little!

On the strands of those meshes we live. That is the so-called dense matter of our world. We look out across the mesh and do not see anything in it, or hear or feel anything in it, and so call it empty space. Meaningless words in the abysses of folly! We see, hear, feel the other strands of the mesh, and call our world solid , firm and material! Call it a real and substantial thing! But the “spaces” of the mesh are a thousand and ten thousand times greater than the substance of the strands. What is in these spaces of the mesh of our “matter”? Space? Space is not nothing. Space is stuff, is matter. What kind of matter? The matter which makes the ethers. More dense – not less, but more dense by far than the rarefactions of our world. The matter of the Etheric world! Inside the molecules, inside the atoms, other atoms – still other atoms inside of those, or ten thousand Chinese eggs each inside of another. If you think that this is imagination, or that there is no room for these interpenetrating universes – ask the physicist and the mathematician. They will tell you there is nothing in the omniverse but room; and room, again, is space, is stuff, is basic world-stuff, mindstuff, life-stuff; and there is no emptiness anywhere – And that is why Etheria is here! But it is also everywhere. All heavenly bodies have an etheric realm.

A few lines more and we shall have done with the more practical and pressing aspects of our subject. The etheric “ships”, as everyone knows, are of many types, not all of them Discs by any means. Some are long and cigar shaped; many are shaped like balloons or dirigibles; some have wings or wing-like attachments. Many of them appear to change shape while in the air. Their color varies also and has also been seen to change. Some of them resemble fire-balls; others are accompanied or followed by smoke, vapor, and luminous appearances. Some are translucent, or seem to glow from within. They travel at all speeds, from zero (stationary) to thousands of miles and hour. They also vary widely in size, from a few feet or yards in diameter to nearly incredible dimensions; we have reports considered trustworthy of at least one craft ten miles in length. They have a curious way of disappearing suddenly when in plain sight, and also of rapidly dwindling in size without withdrawing in distance. It is well to bear all these items in mind, since any single explanation must obviously cover all of them; it is not enough to invent some theory for the discshapes alone and then imagine what that the whole matter is accounted for. Now, under the “etheric explanation” which we are presenting here, our understanding is briefly this:

ETHERIC EXPLANATION OF FLYING SAUCERS
All of the types of craft just mentioned come from the same source. All are constructed by Etherians. Their variety arises from the fact that many of them are experimental, and that different types of them serve different technical purposes. These craft are built in matter of the etheric plane and are imperceptible to us, since they exist in what we call “empty space”. They enter our plane or our level of perception by a process of materialization. The extremely dense matter which fills in the pattern of etheric stresses is replaced by matter of the kind that is visible to us – or better, its vibration rate is lowered until it becomes visible. A little like slowing down a very fast fan until one can see its blades. This is closely similar to what happens in the phenomenon or apportation (where objects, of any kind or size, are “miraculously” transported into and out of sealed rooms, sealed containers and the like). Many people, and most scientists, take no stock in this alleged phenomenon, but it is well attested and cannot be surrendered on that account. Neither the pattern nor the molecular filling is destroyed; the object becomes invisible because the atomic motion is speed up, and it can pass through other matter (a wall, e.g.) because of this same fact. This is equivalent to an increase in density when an object on our place is being apported from one place to another. To an Etherian, an object materializing on our plane would dematerialize on his; to us it materializes in our field of perception, and dematerializes when it returns to its etheric state.

If we understand this, we are on the way toward accounting for many odd items of behavior, such as have been mentioned above.

It is probably well known by this time, that several of these ether ships have fallen, and their contents carefully studied – although with utmost secrecy. We cannot enter here upon this part of, which has been printed in other BSRA publications; we wish to refer only to the “little people”, dwarfs about 30 inches in height, whose bodies were found within the Discs. We have reason to believe that the Etherians, who must operate on their bodies just as they do on the etheric substance of the disc in order to accompany them choose to materialize in small forms, simply for the convenience of operation and flight. This, like everything else set forth here, is according to our best knowledge and belief at this writing. We repeat, that we are offering the first words and not the last on this extraordinary problem.

The propulsion of the etherian craft is beyond the present concepts of our science – yet we have a good clue to its nature, and shall comment on it on a later page. (There is no motor, propeller or other mechanism inside the fallen discs, so far as we have been able to learn.) We must add the extraordinary fact, that under certain conditions, or at certain states of materialization, or at certain altitudes and pressures, the substance of the ether ships is jelly-like and actually does change in shape and apparent size. (The outer skin of the fallen discs, however, is harder than steel, and of unidentified substance.)

It is our information that certain types of the ether ships are and have long been used for interplanetary travel. Those who persist in the belief that they come from visible planets of our system, will eventually seize upon this as a confirmatory fact. But the ether ships do NOT originate on visible planets, as we have said. Interplanetary travel is simply one of their innumerable uses, and this fact should not mislead us. The craft are made in Etheria, and Etheria is in and around all visible objects. It is also the home and motherland of our plane, all the objects we see about us derive from that source, and our own bodies also. We ourselves are Etherians by ancestry and descent; for Etheria is the home of the human race. That we should be so grossly ignorant of it is strange indeed.

Project LUCAS was initiated by Borderland Sciences Research Foundation (BSRF) in 1996, and was dedicated to the work of the late Dr. L. George Lawrence - pioneer in Remote Biological Sensing (RBS) techniques applied to the capture of Interstellar Communications (ICOMM). The project's purpose is to explore alternative methods in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI), and to continue with Dr. Lawrence's work in RBS and ICOMM. Our approach differs from the science of radio astronomy - a technology which is limited due to the necessity of obeying the confines of the electromagnetic spectrum. Dr. Lawrence recognized this limitation, and sought to overcome it by introducing a means of communication which was not bound by conventional electromagnetic laws. ELECTRICITY IN AGRICULTURE.

It is well known that currents of electricity exist in the atmosphere. Clouds are charged and discharged. There is a constant change of electricity from earth to air and from air to earth, the latter being the great reservoir for all electricity. Hills, mountain peaks, trees, high chimneys, spires, in fact all points elevated above the earth's surface assist greatly in charging and discharging the atmosphere. Again, if two iron rods are driven into the earth and connected by a copper wire with an electrometer in the circuit, the instrument is almost immediately affected, showing that currents of electricity are running through the ground. Now, what is the function of these atmospheric and ground electric currents? Many scientists are agreed that certain forms of precipitation are due to electrical action; but my observations have led me to believe conclusively that electricity is a potent factor in the economy of nature, and has more to do with the growth and development of plants than has hitherto been known. Davy succeeded in the decomposition of the alkalies, potash and soda, by means of electric currents. In our laboratories, water and ternary compounds are rapidly decomposed by the battery, and we may reasonably suppose that that which is effected in our laboratories by artificial means takes place in the great laboratory of nature on a grander and more extended scale.

Plant food is carried throughout the plant by means of the flow of sap; these currents circulate through all the rootlets and center, as it were, in the stalk, carrying their tiny burdens of various elements and depositing them in their proper places. That this phenomenon of circulation is due to electricity cannot be doubted. Most plants grow more rapidly during the night than in the day. May not the following be a reason for this?

We have already mentioned how electric currents pass from air to earth and vice versa; at night the plant is generally covered with dew and the plant itself becomes a good conductor, and, consequently, currents of electricity pass to each through this medium, and during the passage convert soil elements into plant food and stimulate the upward currents to gather up the dissolved elements and carry them to their proper places.

From the time electricity became a science, much research has been made to determine its effect, if any, upon plant growth. The earlier investigations gave in many cases contradictory results. Whether this was due to a lack of knowledge of the science on the part of the one performing the experiments, or some defect in the technical applications, we are not prepared to say; but this we do know, that such men as Jolabert, Nollet, Mainbray and other eminent physicists affirmed that electricity favored the germination of seeds and accelerated the growth of plants; while, on the other hand, Ingenhouse, Sylvestre and other savants denied the existence of this electric influence. The heated controversies and animated discussions attending the opposing theories stimulated more careful and thorough investigations, which establish beyond a doubt that electricity has a beneficial effect on vegetation. Sir Humphry Davy, Humboldt, Wollaston and Becquerel occupied themselves with the theoretical side of the question; but it was not till after 1845 that practical electroculture was undertaken. Williamson suggested the use of gigantic electrostatic machines, but the attempts were fruitless. The methods most generally adopted in experiments consisted of two metallic plates—one of copper and one of zinc—placed in the soil and connected by a wire. Sheppard employed the method in England in 1846 and Forster used the same in Scotland. In the year 1847 Hubeck in Germany surrounded a field with a network of wires. Sheppard's experiments showed that electricity increased the return from root crops, while grass perished near the electrodes, and plants developed without the use of electricity were inferior to those grown under its influence. Hubeck came to the conclusion that seeds germinated more rapidly and buckwheat gave larger returns; in all other cases the electric current produced no result. Professor Fife in England and Otto von Ende in Germany carried on experiments at the same time, but with negative results, and these scientists advised the complete abandonment of applying electricity to agriculture. After some years had elapsed Fichtner began a series of experiments in the same direction. He employed a battery, the two wires of which were placed in the soil parallel to each other. Between the wires were planted peas, grass and barley, and in every case the crop showed an increase of from thirteen to twenty-seven per cent when compared with ordinary methods of cultivation.

Fischer, of Waldheim, believing atmospheric electricity to aid much in the growth and development of plants, made the following tests:

He placed metallic supports to the number of about sixty around each hectare (2.47 acres) of loam; these supports were provided at their summits with electrical accumulators in the form of crowns surmounted with teeth. These collectors were united by metallic connection. The result of this culture applied to cereals was to increase the crop by half.

The following experiment was also tried: Metallic plates sixty-five centimeters by forty centimeters were placed in the soil. These plates were alternately of zinc and copper and placed about thirty meters apart, connected two and two, by a wire. The result was to increase from twofold to fourfold the production of certain garden plants. Mr. Fischer says that it is evidently proved that electricity aids in the more complete breaking up of the soil constituents. Finally he says that plants thus treated mature more quickly, are almost always perfectly healthy, and are not affected with fungoid growth.

Later, N. Specnew, inspired by the results arrived at by his predecessors, was led to investigate the influence of electricity on plants in every stage of their development; the results of his experiments were most satisfactory and of practical interest. He began by submitting different seeds to the action of an electric current, and found that their development was rendered more rapid and complete. He experimented with the seeds of haricot beans, sunflowers, winter and spring rye. Two lots, of twelve groups of one hundred and twenty seeds each, were plunged into water until they swelled, and while wet the seeds were introduced into long glass cylinders, open at both ends. Copper disks were pressed against the seeds, the disks were connected with the poles of an induction coil, the current was kept on for one or two minutes and immediately afterward the seeds were sown. The temperature was kept from 45° to 50° Fahrenheit, and the experiments repeated four times. The following table shows the results:

It was also observed that the plants coming from electrified seeds were better developed, their leaves were much larger and their color brighter than in those plants growing from non-electrified seeds. The current did not affect the yield.

At the Botanical Gardens at Kew, the following experiment was tried:

Large plates of zinc and copper (0.445 meter and 0.712 meter) were placed in the soil and connected by wires, so arranged that the current passed through the ground; the arrangement was really a battery of (zinc | earth | copper). This method was applied to pot herbs and flowering plants and also to the growing of garden produce; in the latter case the result was a large crop and the vegetables
grown were of enormous size.

Extensive experiments in electroculture were also made at Pskov, Russia. Plots of earth were sown to rye, corn, oats, barley, peas, clover and flax; around these respective plots were placed insulating rods, on the top of which were crown-shaped collectors—the latter connected by means of wires. Atmospheric electricity was thus collected above the seeds, and the latter matured in a highly electrified atmosphere; the plots were submitted to identical conditions and the experiments were carried on for five years. The results showed a considerable increase in the yield of seed and straw, the ripening was more rapid and the barley ripened nearly two weeks earlier with electroculture. Potatoes grown by the latter method were seldom diseased, only to 5 per cent., against 10 to 40 per cent. by ordinary culture.

Grandeau, at the School of Forestry at Nancy, found by experiment that the electrical tension always existing between the upper air and soil stimulated growth. He found plants protected from the influence were less vigorous than those subject to it.

Macagno, also believing that the passage of electricity from air through the vine to earth would stimulate growth, selected a certain number of vines, all of the same variety and all in the same condition of health and development. Sixteen vines were submitted to experiment and sixteen were left to natural influences. In the ends of the vines under treatment, pointed platinum wires were inserted, to which were attached copper wires, leading to the tops of tall poles near the vines; at the base of these same vines other platinum wires were inserted and connected by copper wires with the soil. At the close of the experiment, which began April 15, and lasted till September 16, the wood, leaves and fruit of both sets of vines were submitted to careful analysis with the following results:

Thus we see that the percentage of moisture and sugar is greater and the undesirable acid lower in those vines subject to electrical influences than in those left to natural conditions. There are also experiments which prove the beneficial effects of electricity on vines attacked by phylloxera.

The following experiments were made at this station: Several plots were prepared in the greenhouse, all of which had the same kind of soil and were subjected to like influences and conditions. Frames in the form of a parallelogram, about three feet by two feet, were put together; across the narrow way were run copper wires in series of from four to nine strands, each series separated by a space about four inches wide, and the strands by a space of one-half inch. These frames were buried in the soil of the plot at a little depth, so that the roots of the garden plants set would come in contact with the wires, the supposition being that the currents of electricity passing along the wires would decompose into its constituents the plant food in the vicinity of the roots and more readily prepare it for the plants. Two electric gardens were thus prepared and each furnished with two common battery cells, so arranged as to allow continuous currents to pass through each series of wires. Near each electric garden was a plot prepared in the same manner, save the electrical apparatus. We will call the two gardens A and B.

The place chosen for the experiments was in a part of the greenhouse which is given up largely to the raising of lettuce, and the gardens were located where much trouble from mildew had been experienced. The reason for this choice of location was to notice, if any, the effect of electricity upon mildew, this disease being, as it is well known, a source of much trouble to those who desire to grow early lettuce. The soil was carefully prepared, the material taken from a pile of loam commonly used in the plant house.

Garden A was located where mildew had been the most detrimental; the experiments began the first of January and closed the first of April. For the garden, fifteen lettuce plants of the head variety were selected, all of the same size and of the same degree of vitality, as nearly as could be determined; the plants were set directly over the wires, so that the roots were in contact with the latter; the plants were well watered and cared for as in ordinary culture, and the fluid in the battery cells was renewed from time to time, that the current of electricity might not become too feeble. At the close of the experiments the following results were noted:

Five plants died from mildew, the others were well developed and the heads large. The largest heads were over the greatest number of wires and nearest the electrodes. It was further noticed that the healthiest and largest plants, as soon as the current became feeble or ceased altogether, began to be affected with mildew. On examining the roots of the plants it was found that they had grown about the wires as if there they found the greatest amount of nourishment; the roots were healthy and in no way appeared to have been injured by the current, but, rather, much benefited by the electrical influences.

Beside garden A was prepared another plot of the same dimensions, having the same kind of soil and treated in like manner as the first, but the electrical apparatus and wires were wanting. At the close of the experiments only three plants had partially developed, and two of these were nearly destroyed by mildew—one only was free from the disease. The results, therefore, show that the healthiest and largest plants grew in the electric plot.

In the second experiment, which we called B, twenty plants of the same variety of lettuce and of equal size were taken. The treatment given was the same as the plants in plot A received. Five plants only remained unaffected with mildew; seven died from the disease when they were half grown; the rest were quite well developed, but at the last part of the experiment began to be affected. Several heads were large, the largest being over the greatest number of wires and nearest the electrodes. Examination of the roots disclosed the same phenomena as in A.

Near plot B were also set twenty other plants, subjected to like conditions as the first, but without electricity; all but one died from mildew before they were half grown, the solitary plant that survived being only partly developed at the close of the experiment, and even this was badly affected with the disease.

Everything considered, the results were in favor of electricity. Those plants subjected to the greatest electrical influence were hardier, healthier, larger, had a better color, and were much less affected by mildew than the others. Experiments were made with various grasses, but no marked results were obtained.

The question would naturally arise whether there may not be a limit reached where electricity would completely overcome the attack of mildew and stimulate the plant to a healthy and vigorous condition throughout its entire growth. From the fact that the hardiest, healthiest, and largest heads of lettuce grew over the greatest number of currents and nearest the electrodes, it would seem that electricity is one of the agents employed by nature to aid in supplying the plant with nourishment and to stimulate its growth. To what extent plants may be submitted to electrical influence, or what strength of current is best suited to them and what currents prove detrimental to their development, have not been determined as yet, but it is desirable to continue this research until some definite information shall be gained on these points. Probably different varieties of plants differ greatly in their capacity for enduring the action of electric currents without injury—experiment alone must determine this.

It has been proved that the slow discharge of static electricity facilitates the assimilation of nitrogen by plants. Faraday showed that plants grown in metallic cages, around which circulated electric currents, contained 50 per cent. less organic matter than plants grown in the open air. It would seem from the researches of the latter physicist that those plants requiring a large percentage of nitrogen for their development would be remarkably benefited if grown under electric influence.—Massachusetts Agricultural College, Bulletin No 16.

Cultivating Vegetables With Electricity by Thomas Stanley Curtis (Everyday Engineering, June 1917)

Every radio telegraphic transmitter, large or small, amateur or professional, is a potential cultivator of plant life. Through a simple conversion of the oscillation transformer, the apparatus to be found in the possession of every licensed radio amateur can be made to perform this practical service in connection with the so-called "kitchen gardens" springing up all over the country.

Following this line of reasoning, Mr. F. F. Pickslay, an ardent experimentalist of Mamaroneck, N.Y., called at the offices of this magazine a few weeks ago and made known his plans, which were formulated largely as a natural result of the order to dismantle all radio stations. The net result of the conference is that Mr. Pickslay will collaborate with the Laboratory Staff of EVERYDAY ENGINEERING to conduct of a line of serious experiments made on the plot adjoining his residence at 24 Tenny Avenue in Mamroneck, which is situated a short train ride from New York City.

The entire stretch of ground being planted measures 38 ft. front by 110 ft. deep. This plot is divided into two parts, one of which will be electrified, and the other without current, for purposes of checking results obtained.

THE DISTRIBUTING SYSTEM

The system for distribution of the high-tension, high-frequency current is simple. It comprises essentially a net-work of copper wire suspended above the garden at a distance of some 8 ft. from the ground, and a series of copper wires placed in shallow trenches beneath the ground.

In the case of our garden, the placing of the ground wires was a simple matter. The plot was first plowed, then raked, and finally the ground wires were placed in furrows produced by means of a hand plow or cultivator of the kind sold in nearly every country hardware store. The ground wires, nine in number, were bridged at either end with a piece of heavy stranded copper wire. All joints were soldered before the wires were buried. The ground lead is a piece of No. 4 stranded copper wire leading down a side of the house from the transformer apparatus and making connection with the nearer bridging wire beneath the ground.

The aerial network was formed by stretching four stranded copper wires between insulators secured to the supporting posts in the four corners of the electrified plot. Guy wires and turnbuckles stiffen the structure and enable us to make the net-work taut. Smaller copper wires are stretched between the stranded conductors, forming the closed loop as shown in the drawing. All joints in this network were carefully soldered with the aid of a blow torch. A rat-tail, composed of wires leading from each of the longitudinal strands, leads directly to the switch outside the house which formerly served the purpose of a lightning switch when the wireless outfit was in commission. Indeed, the scheme of connection is exactly the same as that employed for wireless, the switch being so arranged that when current is not being sent through the net-work the switch connects to the aerial net-work with the ground wires.

CONSTRUCTION DIFFICULTIES

A shelf of rock runs beneath the entire plot under cultivation. The depth of the soil varies from less than a foot to over four feet at different points. While this forms an ideal condition from the standpoint of vegetable raising, in view of the fact that it maintains practically a constant state of moisture in the earth, the rock caused no little difficulty when we understood to erect the supporting poles for the aerial net-work. As the strain on the poles is considerable, we found it necessary thoroughly to guy the poles, and in this connection were forced to resort to various expedients such as the using of convenient trees upon which to fasten the guy wires. Where this was found necessary, we protected the bark by placing strips of wood under the loop of wire where it passed around the tree. In other cases, we were forced to rely upon stakes driven into the ground. We are not certain that the latter will stand the strain, and we may find it necessary to use "dead-men" at the ends of the guy wires. Be it understood a "dead-man" in this case is an anchor-like contrivance buried in the earth.

We used one 10-in. strain insulator of the high-tension variety at each pole. We expect to find it necessary to install additional insulators in the guy wires.

In erecting the net-work, the posts were placed about two feet in the ground. In this comparatively small plot only four posts were used. The guy wires were placed next without any attempt being made to tighten them. Finally the stranded wires forming the closed loop were stretched tightly between the insulators on the posts and the joints soldered to insure non-loosening and good conductivity. The turnbuckles were next brought up to stretch the loop tightly. The longitudinal wires, five in number, were next stretched tightly between two end wires of the loop. These joints were soldered. Then the three transverse wires were stretched between the side wires of the loop and the joints soldered. This gave us a perfectly taut net-work of ample height to permit freedom of movement underneath it in cultivating the garden.

VEGETABLES PLANTED

At this writing, the following vegetables are being planted in both the electrified and check plots: Radishes, lettuce, peas, carrots, beets, onions, potatoes and celery. Corn will be planted as soon as the weather gets sufficiently warm.

It is proposed to keep accurate records sheets with photographs showing the progress of the vegetables in both plots. The results with be published in this magazine from month to month.

APPARATUS REQUIRED

The method of cultivation will be the high frequency or Tesla current method described at length in Mr. Curtis's book, "High Frequency Apparatus." Mr. Pickslay is the owner of a Clapp-Eastham Hytone transmitter of the 1/2 k.w. capacity, and this transmitter will be used to produce the necessary current.

The secondary oscillation transformer is composed of 100 turns of No. 18 annunciator wire wound in a single layer upon a cardboard cylinder 5 1/2 in. in diameter which slips within the edgewise-wound copper strip forming the secondary of the oscillation transformer used for wireless purposes. This coil gives less than a half-inch spark when operated without any capacity attached to its terminal; however, when the aerial net-work is attached, the potential is so increased that a spark several inches long may drawn from the coil. The diagram of connections is given in the accompanying drawing. a later instalment will cover more specifically the apparatus employed as to certain protective measures that have been deemed necessary.

MUSHROOM GROWING

We have plans under way for the erection of mushroom beds in Mr. Pickslay's basement, where conditions are quite ideal, though not so different from those found in the basement of the average suburban residence.

With the mushrooms, it is planned to employ a straight high-tension discharge for the cultivation rather than an oscillatory current. This method is simpler and it requires less expensive apparatus. Two separate beds will be maintained for checking purposes.

Every reader who has access to the necessary ground, and who is the possessor of suitable apparatus, is urged to take up this work and to report results to the Editor.

Electricity Being Used to Hasten Crops (Electrical Experimenter, November 1917)

Experiments on a large scale with the use of electricity to stimulate the growing of crops are among the English government's latest efforts to incrase the country's home food production. The department of agriculture has taken over a large area near Hereford, where installations have already been set up for the use of ionized agricultural experts under Prof. W. H. Blackman of the Imperial College of Science and Technology who will supervise the experiments.

In the Hereford experiment high tension alternating current is to be used. Spring wheat, barley, oats and clover will be dealth with, and fertilizers of various types will also be used in these experiments.

The method adopted is to stretch over the field to be trated a number of thin wires on poles, something like low telegraph wires, but high enough for loaded wagons to pass underneath. The wires are supported by high tension insulators on posts in long parallel spans thirty feet apart.

"The charge fizzes off from the wires," says one account, "with a sound which is sometimes audible, and with a glow which is visible in the dark. Anyone walking about below the wires can sometimes feel the effect on the hair of the head, as a cobweb on the face. The electricity does not act as a fertilizer but as a substitute for sunlight. The current is only used in the early morning and in cloudy weather." The initial cost of the apparatus for twenty-four acres is about $1,500, and the animal cost, including depreciation and labor, is about $300, which is not so very high.

The present method of overhead discharge from wires stretched over the crops was introduced into England twenty years ago by Professor Lemstrom of Helsingfors, whose book "Electricity in Agriculture and Horticulture," anyone interested in the subject should consult. The method was modified by Mr. J. E. Newman, in conjuction with Sir Oliver Lodge. These and others formed themselves into the Agricultural Electric Discharge Company, which disposed of a large number of installations both in England and abroad.

Very contradictory results were obtained by the various users of the Lodge-Newman apparatus, and the subject lost much prestige. The results of the company's own experiments with wheat in over a series of years were reported as an increase varying from 0 percent to 39 percent. The next phase in the development of electroculture opened in 1911. The British Board of Agriculture gave a grand to Professor Priestley of Leeds for a scientific investigation of these new methods and their value. Professor Priestley collaborated with Mr. I. Jorgensen, an electrical expert and plant physiologist, and with Miss E. C. Dudgeon of Dumfries. In the result it appeared that many technical difficulties existed. At first no favorable results were obtained, but in the last two years, with improved methods, increased of 50 percent over the ordinary crop have been recorded with oats on Miss Dudgeon's land.

A very complete installation has recently been connected up in the extensive vegetable gardens owned by Sir Thomas E. Roberts, near Carnarvon in Wales.

The engineers of the Carnarvon plant are convinced of several important features which have not been previously noted. They are emphatically of the opinion that the ionization of atmosphere is but of secondary importance, though attention is being particularly paid to the influence of prevailing winds to widen the area of influence. They maintain the main effort of discharge is notceable on the soil, and that soils heavily manured are more effectively benefited by reason of the latent humidity. The active result upon the soil is apparently due to the release and nitrification essential to the well-being of plant life.

The dark green foilage and the building-up of new tissue is evidence proof of the greater vigor and incrased growth of the plant. Furthermore, confirmation is provided of the fact that sunlight is detrimental for the discharge to be in operation at the same time (more successful working is obtained at sunrise and sunset); a time-switch can be automatically arranged to switch the current on and off at these times.

This fact also emphasizes the approximate degree of humidity necessary for the success of the discharge, as the amount of dew or latent humidity prevalent at the periods are more or less helpful. Whereas in heavy rain the discharge is inclined to run to waste, owing to insulation troubles. It must be born in mind that the intensified and rectified voltage of 75,000 volts to 100,000 volts has to be dealt with a very different manner to the ordinary electric light voltage, and the methods of control together with the periods of working are important factors in the welfare of the installations. The current expended at Carnarvon is economical in working. The current required at the primary terminals amounts to 450-460 watts per acre per hour (aproximately only half a unit); the reason for the discrepancy is entirely atmospheric, the energy required being greater in proportion to the prevailing humidity to make up for the sundry current loss. This occurs on dull heavy days when mist or heavy dew prevails, whereas on prevailing dry periods the efficiency is uniform.

At Carnarvon the apparatus is fixt permanently in a small shed, and is connected to the main cbale which supplies electric light for the residence, the out buildings and farm. The initial voltage is 220 volts continuous current, and passes thru a controlling switchboard to the intensifying apparatus. The chief feature of the overhead wiring is the careful manner observed in insulating the wires, which are suspended over the respective garden plots— a uniform height of 7 feet has been adopted in order to allow freedom for the garden staff to carry on the work of cultivation when the current is not in use.

Electroculture has past the back-garden, amateur stage. It is now a serious proposition. But knowledge of its possibilities and limitations is scanty. It falls into place with other possibilities of development in plant industry, which will only reach fruition with the help of well-organized, large-scale research and experiment supported by public funds.

From "Electricity in Agriculture: the uses of electricity in arable, pasture, dairy, and poultry farming; horticulture; pumping and irrigation; electroculture; and general mechanical and domestic service on farms; for farmers, agriculturists, horticulturists, supply-station engineers, electrical manufacturers, and others" (1922) by Arthur H. Allen. Nearly ninety years later and we seem to be stuck in the same stage of "experiment".

Electricity and the Growth of Plants. For many years the idea of accelerating the growth of plants by electrical treatment has been the subject of experiment and more or less scientific research on the part of inventors, but the results on the whole have been disappointing. Of the numerous methods of applying electrification that have been tried, very few have shown any real promise, and only one has shown fairly consistent and favourable results, viz., that which makes use of a high-pressure electrical discharge into the air over the growing plants. During the past fifteen years a good deal of attention has been devoted to this process by a number of patient experimenters, and it appears to be certain that, other things being equal, the high-pressure discharge does increase the yield and hasten the growth of plants. The amount of the increase varies a good deal with the season's weather and with the mode of conducting the process, which is still in the stage of experiment.

The High-Pressure Discharge. This process of electrification of plants is known as "Electroculture," and is usually carried out by suspending over the young plants a series of parallel wires of small section, which are maintained at a pressure of from 30,000 to 60,000 V above earth potential. The treatment is applied for a few hours daily, morning and evening. The fine parallel wires are supported by a stouter wire running along each side of the field under treatment, and attached to insulators on poles; in some cases the network is fixed at a height sufficient to clear loaded wagons, in others it is only 5 or 6 ft. from the ground, so that it has to be removed before the harvest is taken, and in other experiments the network has been supported from the poles in such a way that it can be kept within 1 or 2 ft. of the tops of the growing plants throughout their development, and hauled up out of the way for harvesting. There is little doubt that the last-named method is the most effective. The network is very light and easily raised or lowered. According to Dr. C. Chree, uniform conditions at the level of the crop can be secured if the distance between adjacent wires does not exceed the height of the wires above the crops.

Preferably the charge is unidirectional, the wires being positive with regard to the earth, but in some cases alternating current has been used; the latter is the easier to apply, the production of a continuous current at such high pressures presenting some technical difficulties, which however are not insuperable. In all cases the high-pressure current is obtained by means of a transformer in the first instance, being afterwards rectified. The first investigator in this country who obtained marked results was Sir Oliver Lodge, who used for the purpose of rectification a device known as the Lodge valve, which permits the current to flow
through it in only one direction, and this system has been followed by most of the researchers. Another effective rectifier is that of Delon, which employs a combination of condensers with a mechanical revolving switch of simple construction, and has been proved very satisfactory in operation. When the process is at work, a slight hissing sound is heard from the charged wires, and at night they may be seen to glow faintly. The amount of energy used to charge the wires is very small, and the cost of the network is also very moderate compared with the results attained, while of course the apparatus can be used year after year. The operation of the plant is simple, and can be entrusted to any man of reasonable intelligence.

Results of Electrification. It will be of interest to quote some of the results which have been obtained in recent years, premising that in every case control plots adjoining the electrified areas, but not electrified, are sown with similar seed and serve for the purpose of comparison. In 1912, Miss E. C. Dudgeon, Lincluden Mains Farm, Dumfries, experimenting with potatoes, recorded an increased yield of 10 cwt. 3 qr. per acre; in 1913 the increase was 13 cwt. 3 qr., and in 1914 1 ton 3 cwt. It will be noticed that the increase is progressive, and it has been found that a plot which has been electrified in one year will again show an increased crop in the following year, although not then electrified, so that apparently some influence is exerted on the soil. In 1915 Miss Dudgeon grew oats, and obtained an increase of 31 per cent in the grain, and 63 per cent in the straw. Her theory is that under the influence of the electrical discharge, the ingredients in the soil necessary to plant growth are rendered more soluble and more easy of assimilation; that the sap is enabled to flow more vigorously, and the formation of starch and sugar is increased; that respiration, absorption, and evaporation are accelerated, and by increased chemical activity in the plant its whole fabric is improved.

Official Trials. In 1916 further experiments were carried out on Miss Dudgeon's farm, under the observation of Prof. V. H. Blackman and Mr. I. Jorgensen, and were described in the Journal of the Board of Agriculture. The crop was oats, and the field had been in pasture without manure for three years. The network consisted of No. 24 S.W.G. bronze wires 4.5 yds. apart, supported at their ends at 7 ft. from the ground, and sagging to 6 ft. at the centre (the wires had been 10ft. high in 1915, and 15ft. in 1914). The current was 3 A at 50 V in the primary circuit, and the electrical discharge was used for 848 hours during the season, in the daytime. The result was an increase of 49 per cent in the yield of grain, and 88 per cent increase in straw, in spite of a heavy loss of grain through stormy weather. The increased value of the crop was calculated at £6 7s. per acre, whilst the energy expended cost 11s. at Id. per unit.

Other Experiments. Some interesting experiments were carried out at Llantwit Vadre, near Pontypridd, in 1917 and 1918. The plant included a Delon rectifier, and maintained a pressure of 30,000 to 39,000 V on the network, according to the weather; it cost £300, and was capable of dealing with 100 to 150 acres— say, £3 an acre.

The network was of galvanized Steel wife, and cost (for 1-2 acres) about £12, or £10 an acre, making a total first cost of £13 per acre. The crop was potatoes, and increases of 17-2 and 12-6 per cent were registered, in comparison with control plots, the yield in 1918 amounting to 9-46 and in 1917 to 7-5 tons per acre. The duration of treatment was 282 hr. in 1917, and 588 hr. in 1918, and the current going to the network was 2-5 mA in 1917 (dry), to as much as 7 mA (wet weather); in 1916, with a different arrangement of the network, the current averaged 0-5 mA. Many other records could be given, if space permitted, but we must be content with stating that many experimental installations have been set in operation, and the Board of Agriculture is conducting researches with a view to developing the system on scientific lines. The latest report of a committee appointed by the Board to investigate the subject states that the average effect of electrification on spring-sown oats and barley is an increase of 22 per cent in the yield.

The process is equally applicable to greenhouses, and in a number of market gardens it has been employed with success, tomatoes, cucumbers, strawberries, etc., being ready for market from two to three weeks before unelectrified produce, and commanding a correspondingly high price. The cost of an apparatus for four large greenhouses, 200 X 28ft., including an oil engine, was £135, and the running cost was 2s. 6d. a week.

The Wolfryn Process. During recent years much has been claimed for a system of electrifying seeds before sowing the Wolfryn process, in which the seed is soaked in a weak solution of salt or calcium chloride, through which a current is passed for several hours, after which the seed is dried in a kiln. Large areas were sown with the electrified seed in Dorset, and the results obtained were said by many farmers to be quite comparable with those given above for electroculture. Reports of the Director of the Government Agricultural Experimental Station at Rothamsted, and by Messrs. Sutton and Sons at Reading, on trials carried out in 1919, were, however, unfavourable. While in both cases some tests showed a slight increase of yield, others showed the contrary, and the conclusion was that the process lacked certainty, and could not be compared in effectiveness with manuring the soil. It was regarded as an "adventure," which might or might not prove profitable. At the time of writing, therefore, it cannot be considered a sound process.

Amongst other methods of increasing plant growth, the use of artificial light has been tried, with the aid of electric lamps. By this means the rate of development is doubled, but the cost is considerable, and the process is suitable for use only under special circumstances (see Chapter V, p. 63).

Artificial Fertilizers. The use of chemical fertilizers is an indispensable feature of modern agriculture, and great quantities of "nitrate" are imported from Chile for this purpose, as well as various chemicals from other sources. In recent years great progress has been made in the production of nitrogenous manures, such as sulphate of ammonia, by the "fixation" of nitrogen from the air -by- electrical means; * this source of nitrogen is inexhaustible, and in certain districts where a cheap and abundant supply of electricity is available the fixation of nitrogen has become an exceedingly important industry. One process, in which an electric arc is employed, is comparatively simple and easily controlled, and it is confidently anticipated that at no distant date it will be possible for a farmer who operates on a fairly large scale to manufacture nitrogenous fertilizer with the aid of his own electrical plant.

June 27th, 2007: An expert in the polygraph and biocommunication, Cleve Backster related details of his research into electrical responses in plant life. His studies indicate that plants can sense human intent in a kind of "primary perception" that he compared to ESP. For instance, in experiments with bean sprouts --one group of sprouts was praised, the second group ignored, and the third sent negative thoughts-- the praised group grew much faster, he reported.

An experimenter can influence the results of a study. The studies which showed plants preferred classical music might've been the result of experimenter bias against rock music, he said. Backster's first plant experiment took place in 1966, and he's now spent over 40 years on this type of research, which he conducts out of a former DEA lab in San Diego, in an under-funded fashion.

He also discussed his work with the polygraph, and noted that newer polygraph equipment incorporates the use of a camera in its readouts.

Cleve Backster is the founder of the Backster Research Foundation and currently teaches at the Backster School of Lie-Detection. He is also on the teaching faculty at the California Institute for Human Science and serves on the advisory board at the Institute of HeartMath.

Cleve is an international speaker on the subject of Biocommunication and has been a professional observer of human psycho-physiological tracings since 1948. Since 1966, Cleve has conducted extensive research related to observed electrical responses in plant life and at a cellular level in other living organisms. His research into what has been called "The Backster Effect" has attracted world-wide attention.

Experimenting on living organisms is exciting and -as history shows- often rewarding. But there just aren't many people, dogs, birds, fish, etc., that you can (or would want to) subject to tests to determine such things as emotional reactions, nervous response, or sensorial perception. So, how about plants? They are after all, living things, and there are many indictations that when stimulated, they have sensitive, sensible reactions which can be measured on ordinary electronic equipment. Before going into the details of the equipment (which you can build yourself), let's get to know a little more about plants and how they tick.

Do they just sit? On first thought, plants appear to be quite remote from life as we know it. Their sedentary existence stands in strong contrast to energetic animals, which are endowed with a massive inventory of sensory capacities, fast reflex movements, and many active organs.

However, recent research has revealed that many of the same environmental factors and stimulations that affect animals also affect plants. of course, here we find modified abilities to sense, feel, and react. also, since a plant cannot run away from a threat to its existence, it would appear that special internal forces are set in motion to protect the organism from shock and possible death. These phenomena are akin to states of anxiety in animals and are evidenced by changes in the plant's psychogalvanic or electric states which occur in threatening situations. The recently discovered "Backster Effect" seems to provide evidence that plants have some ability to function in a mode of supersensory perception. This, of course, invites a host of exciting and unique investigations.

However, prior to engaging in plant-oriented experiments, you should realize that living systems frequently produce maverick results. While a plant may be regarded as an organic semiconductor having variable resistance and self-generating properties, it also has elements of apparent cellular consciousness. Electronic and mechanical response profiles are not uniform.

Some plants (such as the Mimosa Pudica) react rapidly; others give no discernible reactions to stimuli and still others exhibit strangely delayed responses. Remember that typical electrical signals provided by plants are in the low millivolt/microampere range. The equipment described here for making experiments should give you a good start, but for some extremely sensitive tests, you should avail yourself of an ultra-high-gain electrometer with input impedances of 10¹⁰ ohms or higher.

Transmitter Effect: The behavior of plants in strong r-f fields has been studied only superficially. Although excessive energy levels induce heating and death and although plants are (electrically speaking) DC-oriented organisms, they nevertheless incorporate mechanisms which allow them to survive in the immediate vicinity of high-power radio transmitters of all types. To our knowledge, no tests have been performed to detect psychogalvanic behavior in plants under these conditions.

Another factor to remember is the importance of repetition. If, for example, a plant specimen is stimulated continuously, badly injured by burns or cuts, infrequently watered, etc., it is bound to tire quickly, perhaps lapse into shock and die. Terminal conditions are indicated by wilting, and discoloration usually forecasts death. Depending on the plant's overall chemistry and the amount of moisture retained in leaves and stem structures, a dead specimen is little else than a simple conductor of the carbon type and no psychogalvanic response of any kind should be expected. In short, be gentle and allow your plants to recuperate after they have served your purpose.

Some 350,000 plant species are known to science. At this time, we have no concise information as to which group is psychogalvanically superior to others. In general, however, it has been discovered (Lund, 1931) that the distribution of gradients of electrical potentials in large plants (such as trees) is more complex than in small plants. Apparently, each individual cell in a plant is electrically polarized and acts as a tiny, variable battery. The electrical potentials occurring in tissues are summation effects of the potentials of individual cells which may net either in series or in parallel (Rosene, 1935). Various mechanisms of correlation are involved here; but, as you are bound to discover, there is no complete uniformity from one specimen to the next, either in looks or reactions.

Misc. Suitable chassis and cabinet, battery holders, pilot-lamp mounting assembly, clamp support, machine clamp, clamp insulators, metal electrodes, twin shielded lead, rubber feet, plastic pot for plant, knobs, mounting hardware, etc.

Plant Response Detector. The basic instrument for plant experiment is a response detector whose schematic is shown in Fig. 1. The detector has both visual (meter) and acoustical (speaker) indications of plant reaction. The audio tone output can also be connected to a conventional audio tape recorder and a pen-type recorder can be connected to the DE amplifier output to make permanent records of results.

The schematic is divided into four operational sections: the Wheatstone bridge input with exciter and input-output polarizer; an op amp guard circuit having a disabling feature; a high-gain DE operational amplifier; and an audio tone generator whose frequency varies with the potential generated in the plant. The op amp used has a large-signal gain of 100,000 and has built-in short circuit protection.

The circuit can be assembled on a perf board or a printed circuit board. Be careful to avoid heat damage when soldering the IC and other semiconductors. Observe the polarity of the electrolytic capacitor. Either a well-filtered dual 9-volt power supply or 9-volt batteries may be used for the power source. Use a suitable metal chassis to house the detector, with the meter and all controls on the front panel.

Connections to Plant. The pickup electrodes which are attached to the plant (see Fig. 2) can be of almost any shape and any metal that has good conductivity. Stainless steel or silver electrode pairs will work very well. Use of dissimilar metals can cause undesirable electrolysis. The effective size of the electrodes can be determined experimentally, but normally would be less than one inch in diameter. If it is found that the leaf resistance is very high, a larger diameter on the electrodes is required. If the plant has thin, moist, semi-opaque leaves, a smaller electrode is used. Leaf conductance can be enhanced by using electrocardiographic electrode contact cream, such as ECG KONTAX (Cat. No. 391, Birtcher Corp., Los Angeles, CA 90032). It is water soluble and should be wiped off plant leaves after the experiment is complete. Give the leaf a good rinse after that. Connections to the electrodes are made through a shielded pair cable. The electrodes are insulated from the metal clamp by pieces of plastic with the leaf gently compressed between the electrodes. Using the bridge resistor values shown in Fig. 1, the resistance between the electrodes should not exceed 250,000 ohms. Also keep in mind that the plant generates a small current of its own which, depending on the setting of switch S2, is superimposed on the excitation current flowing in the circuit.

Theory of Circuit Design. The resistance of the plant leaf, when connected to BP1 and BP2, forms part of a Wheatstone bridge with the other arms formed by R1 and the two portions of R2. Power for the bridge is supplied by B1 controlled by R3. The final values of R1 and R2 are determined by the type of plant leaf being used. The resistances must be increased when the leaf is thin and sensitive to avoid over-excitation and undesirable side effects.

The input / output polarizer switch S2 permits reversal of the current applied to the plant leaf since living matters tends to saturate and gradually cease to function as an organic resistor.

Magneto-Tropicism: This phenomenon was discovered by Dr. L. J. Audus, of Bedford College, London, in 1959, and reported by him in "Nature" in 1960. This report clearly showed that plants are highly susceptible to electromagnetic fields.
In tests, a viable seed of any plant is inserted in a small plastic container which is then placed between the poles of a strong magnet (of the magnetron type). For control purposes, another similar seed and container are placed far away from the magnet but with all other conditions being the same.

The "magnetized" seedling should show some bending effects plus a more emphatic growth than the control specimen.

It is also possible to "quick-ripen" fruit with a 900-gauss magnet. For example, a number of tomatoes placed at various distances around the magnet poles (anywhere from 3 to 17 inches away) will show varying rates of ripening. Those closest to the magnet will be the first to turn red. Horticulturists at the University of Utah believe that the earth's magnetic field activates an enzyme system inside the fruits and vegetables causing them to ripen and that a similar thing is caused artificially when the fruit is placed near a power magnet.

The offset signal fro the bridge is amplified in IC1, which is guarded by diodes D1 and D2. When S3 is closed, these diodes limit the input voltage to the op amp and protect it from large signals. However, once the circuit is operational and maximum sensitivity is required after M1 has been nulled, S3 can be opened. The output of the DE amplifier is indicated on a meter and can be used to drive a DE pen recorder if a permanent record is desired. The output also drives an audio oscillator (Q1 and Q2) whose frequency is a function of the DE signal. Transformer T1 couples the audio tone to an optional audio tape recorder and to an internal speaker. Capacitor C3 and resistor R16 provide feedback for the oscillator.

The circuit is sensitive to a few microamperes of input current, and when this current changes as a result of plant stimulation, the bias on Q1 changes to alter the pitch of the oscillator. Indicator lamp I1, momentarily activated by pushbutton switch S7, permits intermittent tests of battery voltage and provides for injection of ene markers on a tape recorder since pitch increases when S7 is activated. Power to the audio oscillator is controlled by switch S5.

Transformer T1 provides an audio output for the tape recorder at all times regardless of the position of S6. In one position of S6, R17 serves as a load; while in the other position, R21, an 8-ohm pad, is the load. Volume control is essential since the beep in the audio tone produced by S7 is annoying to listen to and can produce undesired stimulus to the plant.

While performing a particular experiment, the audio signal can be fed to one channel of a conventional stereo recorder, while the other channel is supplied with time markers (from WWV or CHU) or vocal announcements. This permits recording of vocal stimulus to the plant as well as the plant's response.

DC Booster: In tests performed on a tree by the U.S. Department of Agriculture at the University of California in 1964, the application of about 58 volts DC (negative electrode high in the tree, positive attached to stainless steel nail drive in the base of the trunk) showed that leaf density on the electrified branches increased substantially after 28 days. Over a much longer period of time, the leaf growth was 300% over that on the non-electrified branches.

It was also noticed that when a sensitive DC voltmeter was connected between two conductors drive into a living branch (one at the center of a cut-off portion; the other in the layer just under the bark), cutting twigs or branches in any other part of the tree produced a sudden fluctuation on the meter. Even burning a leaf produced a noticeable effect. Not only did the natural voltage rise and fall, at times it even reversed polarity. There is no explanation for this effect.

The Backster Effect: Cleve Backster, one of this country's leading authorities on the polygraph (lie detector) connected a pair of electrodes to a leaf of a dracaena massangeana while it was being watered. Surprisingly, the plant's psychogalvanic reaction pattern resembled that of a human subject exposed to emotional stimulation.

In further tests, Backster decided to ignite a match and burn the leaf to which the electrodes were attached. At the instant that the thought image occurred in his mind, a dramatic change appeared on the plant's polygraphic readout. Tests were carried out on other living matter including paramecium, fresh fruits and vegetables, amoeba, mold cultures, scrapings from the roof of a human mouth, and yeast. All showed similar results. It would appear that there is an unknown communication between all living things, outside the orthodox electromagnetic spectrum. For exampling, placing plants in lead-lined, Faraday-screened cages, fails to suppress the phenomenon.

It also appears that plants form some sort of emotional attachment to their owners. Cleve Backster has reported that one plant responded to his emotional attitude at a distance of 1000 miles. Obviously, much work remains to be done in this area.

Conducting Tests. In connecting the electrodes to the leaf, apply just enough pressure to make a good contact with the leaf without crushing it. Place the guard switch (S3) in the closed position to protect the IC from an excessive input signal.

When S1 is turned on, power is applied to the bridge circuit at a level determined by R3. Then turn on S4 to activate the op amp IC. Potentiometer R2 is adjusted for a meter null indication. This null may have to be re-adjusted when the plant is in a non-stimulated condition. Note the pitch of the audio tone coming from the speaker when the plant is quiescent. A change in pitch, as well as in the meter indication, may result when the plant's well being is threatened.

The amount of excitation (via R3), and the state of the input / output polarizer switch S2 must be determined by actual use. Obviously, the gain control (R8) can be adjusted to obtain more or less sensitivity, and S3 can be opened to increase the gain of the DE amplifier.

There is very little more to be said about the use of the response detector. Patience and repetition are the key words. Obviously, also, controlled conditions are a must. The area in which the plant lives must be quiet so that stimuli can be applied. There should be a minimum of power-line noise to avoid fluctuations in the audio and meter indications. There should be no r-f transmitters in the vicinity to cause fault indications.

From the time I was capable of intelligent thought, I always regarded as completely baseless the assertions made by astronomers and other scientists that life on other planets was an impossibility. Brought up in the Christian Science religion, I preferred to attribute to my Heavenly Father the ability to make on other worlds creations and creatures immeasurably superior to those whose squalid activities have turned this planet into a place where all now walk abroad in fear of being seared into oblivion by new engines of a perverted science.

I became interested in flying saucers through reading the well- known books on the subject, which fascinated me completely. I read Keyhoe, Wilkins, Cramp, Jessup and a dozen others, all of whom wrote from varying viewpoints and with varying conclusions as the origin, purposes and nature of the flying saucers. The result for me, as for everyone else who has read these books, was a confused state of mind as to just exactly what was going on; are they friendly, or hostile? If so, how friendly and how hostile?

As a world traveler of many years standing, having served as a seagoing radio officer for more than five years, I had noted one singular fact about the places I visited in my travels, which led me to think about communications with the flying saucer people. In every country, the standard of living and material civilization was keyed to its communications.

In parts of the Orient and Middle East, if you wanted to make a telephone call, you would have considerable difficulty in locating a telephone. Having located one, if you wished to communicate a hundred miles, you might wait a day or two for the connections. Telegraph offices are few and far between in these parts of the world, and radio communications are equally sparse.

One reaches bottom as far as communications are concerned in portions of Africa where the bongo drum or the human runner still serve as the means. In these locales, material civilization is at its most retarded in every respect.

This fact of communications being an index of civilization is not widely appreciated in the United States, where through habit, we speak and write over thousands or tons of thousands of miles with an ease and familiarity bound to breed a contempt for it. Far from being happy with our communications system, including radio and television in their exquisite refinements, communications firms are driven into improvement of facilities by relentless public and business pressure for improved ability to communicate. The ability to communicate on a world wide scale by a variety of different methods is available to every American. And in this country we possess the highest material civilization known on this planet.

From their observed speeds and maneuvers, and their magnetic propulsion systems as now acknowledged, the flying saucers are products of a civilization immeasurably advanced beyond our own. While we boasting the world's newspapers of airplanes capable of fifteen hundred miles per hour, other aircraft, perhaps not of this earth, have been electronically measured and visibly observed traveling six times this speed, in our atmosphere.

It is by no means an unreasonable assumption that the intelligences capable of manufacturing these craft would have mastery of _all_ methods of communication, since we have been forced to admit from the evidence that communications development is the handmaiden of progress.

When we say _all_ methods of communication, we must be prepared to admit, if we have any humility remaining as a race, that perhaps these saucer intelligences have systems of communication beyond anything we know, or perhaps mastery of some methods which we have forgotten.

As a professional radio operator for some years, I found myself constantly wondering at the miracle which permitted me to convey intelligence to another man twelve thousand miles away at the touch of a key. I was also conscious of the fact that this science was founded by Marconi a scant fifty years ago. I therefore did not find it at all unreasonable that other methods, perhaps far more effective and advanced methods of communication were in the hands of the saucer intelligences Methods as far beyond ours as ours are beyond the bongo drum.

I found completely unacceptable and rejected as absurd the bald assertion frequently made by the other saucer investigators that no communication had been made or was likely to be made. In some cases, this assertion was made in a purblind fashion without investigation of any kind.

With a mental attitude of humility, I set about looking into some of the various claims made for contacts with the saucer beings, convinced that somewhere authentic contact must be being made, and that only in this way would we ever discover why the saucers were here and where they came from.

One place I felt bound to visit was Giant Rock, California, a desert airstrip in a remote location between Victorville and Twenty-nine Palms. With a long history as a landing ground for aliens in pre-war days, Giant Rock is difficult of access over dirt roads that try the springs of the stoutest automobile. There is a dry lake bed with a single strip running uphill to the foot of the Giant Rock, which towers some seventy feet in the air and has enormous girth. Behind the rock is a four hundred foot high pile of enormous boulders, smooth and round.

In this arid and flinty locale there dwells a man who seems to harmonize with his environment. Middle aged, balding, of average size, George Van Tassel is one of the pioneers of "communication" with the space ships.

No radio towers or electronic equipment clutter the area, but beneath the Giant Rock a room has been hollowed out from whence Van Tassel carries out his communications by telepathy with the saucer beings.

In darkness under the rock, and after preparatory measures, there booms forth from Van Tassel's general direction a voice that is most definitely not his own.

"I AM HULDA. Your people will soon witness more fireballs, which we are dropping as nullifiers. Greetings of love and peace to you. I am Hulda."

More messages follow, in voices which vary in accent and timbre. They deal with everything from life on other planets to the fate that awaits humanity if we continue to toy with atomic energy.

Sometimes, the messages have the habit of running into forecasts of future events. Take for instance the case of the now famous buzzing of the National Capitol and White House in Washington, D.C. on the nights of June 25, 26 and 27, 1952. Van Tassel has a receipt from Air Force Intelligence, Washington, dated June 23, 1952, for a message passed to them by the saucer beings stating that the Pentagon was to be given "something to muddle over," and '"we are going to give this old globe a buzz".

I left the area of Giant Rock with the distinct impression that genuine contact had been made. I was considerably interested in putting into practice the method of training for telepathic reception which Van Tassel gave me prior to my leaving the rock. I felt that here was a man with nothing to sell, no gimmicks, no popcorn stand, no razzmatazz. You took it or you left it, and if you wanted to try it yourself, here was the method.

In view of what I had witnessed, read and been told while at Giant Rock, I felt that the very least I could do was to persevere with this system of telepathy and see if I could actually do anything with it.

I was prepared, by religious training and deference to the Father to admit Van Tassel's hypotheses that if you believe in God, you had also to believe that he was capable of making a better communications set than the Radio Corporation of America, namely, the human mind.

I began practicing regularly and religiously the art of open perception which trains the mind to receive thought vibrations. Nothing happened for several months. However, I had decided that six months was a fair trial, after which I could Justifiably go out and call Van Tassel a liar, and a fake. I felt this attitude to be both more intelligent and likely to be of profit than the out of hand dismissal of telepathy as a communications medium by people who had never tried it, nor talked to anyone who had.

Side by side with my practice, I continued to study the phenomena from all aspects, seeking to bring order out of the chaos of conflicting reports and confusing interpretations of the reports.

One night about ten o'clock, I was studying very carefully a passage in Keyhoe's "Flying Saucer Conspiracy". I received an impulse of an overpowering nature to get a pencil and write. Obeying the impulse, I grabbed up a pencil and began writing on the back cover of a paper back book, the nearest thing on which I could make a mark. My arm was impelled and controlled by an unseen force, and I wrote a scrawl which was largely unintelligible across the back of the book. At the bottom of the cover, I distinctly wrote the word "Discontinue", at which point the force on my arm cut off as though a switch had been thrown.

I discussed this event with my wife, who was somewhat startled. I stood in the middle of the floor gesticulating and giving vent to my puzzlement, when a similar force was exerted upon my head, drawing it upwards and backwards with surprising power.

Only by a great effort of will, was I able to return my head to the normal position. The moment I ceased willing it there, the force drew it upwards and backwards once more.

Suddenly, as before, the force cut off as though a switch had been thrown, and my puzzlement and confusion was doubled. I discussed it briefly with my wife, and a few minutes later I had an overwhelming impulse to go outside. Not wishing to further alarm her, I made the excuse that I had to go outside and move the car. As I walked to the door of the apartment, my right hand rose by this selfsame force once more, and the hand closed around the knob. Once again, I could _will_ it to my side. I turned my body slightly so that the left hand was closer to the knob, and it too rose and grasped the knob, without any conscious effort on my part.

I went outside and descended the stairs. Immediately I reached the bottom, the force seized upon my whole body and I was propelled like a mechanical man down the street and to the corner. Here, I was halted, and my body spun in a neat, military right turn. Then I walked to the end of the block, was stopped, half turned again and thus propelled right around the block, returning to the entrance to apartment where the force once again cut off as though switched off.

Inside, I thought deeply about the entire process, not knowing what to think, since no communication of any kind had been received by me.

In the end, I simply shrugged and went to bed. Hardly in bed five minutes, I suddenly found my entire vocal mechanism functioning involuntarily, and through it intelligent words and phrases were being conveyed to me. I did not hear voices, but rather, found my speech mechanism being used as the agency to communicate with me. The message, as best I can remember, went like this:

"I am Ashtar. I greet you from Schare. Your interest in our cause is well known and we would like you to help us. Would you wish to do so?"......

The message went on to convey to me some intelligence concerning a theory of mine on the saucers which proved my theory both wrong and dangerous to me. I therefore felt that this first message containing such a warning with intimate knowledge of the subject concerned, was indeed genuine.

However, I was still considerably disturbed by the entire happening, although I had actually sought with energy and regularity to make a telepathic contact. I therefore related my experience to a kind gentleman greatly learned in occult matters.

From this man I obtained certain secret information concerning the protection of oneself during telepathic contact, since all who seek to contact one telepathically _may not be true spacemen_. This, my first contact with the world outside the purely physical came as a severe jolt to me. Up until these few vital minutes with this man, I was thoroughly certain that only the spacemen had telepathy and that there wasn't anyone else anyway, who could contact human beings telepathically.

In the weeks and months that followed, I was able to appreciate that all beings who circle our globe in high performance aircraft or spacecraft, pseudo or otherwise are not tall, handsome spacemen with no dental caries and only an earnest desire to uplift humanity. There are others, whose morals and values and purposes and allegiances are not identical with those of the bulk of humanity.

The information that follows, and the comment on it by myself, is presented with but one purpose in mind. To clarify the saucer mystery for all who earnestly seek an answer. I do not ask that all that is written should be accepted as fact, despite its origin. every single thing written should be turned over to the reader's critical judgment, scrutinized, weighed, evaluated and either accept or cast out in accordance with what these faculties dictate. One thing can be taken as certain. The messages are authentic communications, through telepathy, by myself in the conscious, waking state. At no time was I under any form of control, seen or unseen. The messages have assumed their particular character because of my sincere insistence upon valid and useful information of high grade. I was not interested in finding out whether Mrs. Venus has a washing machine and a mix master, but rather in what her husband was doing flying around this planet. I have at no time been interested in prophesy, but rather in seeking out explanations of various phenomena which have been observed in connection with the flying saucers.

The messages were compiled from notes made during the receptions. That is, during reception of the information, all pertinent material, names and other portions likely to suffer from memory lapses were written down. Immediately upon terminating the contact, the messages were compiled into written form as close to verbatim as possible.

The messages were received from Ashtar, who identifies himself as Commandant, Vela Quadra Sector, Realms of Schare, all projections all waves.

Let us begin with one interesting phenomenon observed frequently in connection with the flying saucers which everyone had wondered about. My questions appear after the Q. letter:

Q.	What is the relationship between the sightings of space craft and the proximity of Mars to Earth?
A.	"There is, in fact, no real relationship, only one which seems to present. When Mars approaches Shan (Earth)there is what I shall describe as an etheric reaction between the two. The result of this reaction is that craft in your skies become more easily visible to your optics. In actual fact there are no more and no less craft in your skies during Mars proximity than at any other time. The difference lies in what is available to your physical optics."
Q.	Great controversy in the saucer world has long surrounded the exact nature of the beings operating the space ships; What type of beings are they? Are you "etheric" beings, or are you possessed of a fleshly physical body such as mine?
A.	"I am etheric. I do not have a fleshly body like yours, bounded by flesh. But it is possible for me to make my being visible to your optics by certain changes in its vibratory rate."
Q.	This would mean you are normally invisible to us.
A.	"Yes."
Q.	As you are an etheric being, are other etheric beings visible to you?
A.	"Yes, although not exactly in terms of optical vision as you know it."
Q.	From your statement that you are etheric, am I to presume that you have evolved beyond the stage of a physical and astral body?
A.	"Correct. I do not possess a physical casing of the dense type such as yours. I am definitely etheric, as are all people on other planets in this solar system. However, this does not mean that we are invisible to each other as we are to you under normal circumstances. We see each other and live much as you do, but we do not have this dense physical casing which you possess. The advantages, benefits and comforts of this form of living are enormous, and the irritations of a fleshly envelope are most uncomfortable. Unless we choose to convert the vibrational frequency of our bodies to one which is visible to your optics, we remain invisible to your people. Highly evolved people with a good "psychic eye" as you call it, can frequently see us in vaporous form, although we may be invisible to other earthlings in the same location. When your clairvoyants travel to our civilizations on other planets, they see and are able to interpret our lives because they are not using their physical eyes but rather their astral or psychic sight, to which we are visible just as though we were physical."
Q.	When you become visible to our optics, does the person who sees you know that you are a "converted etheric"?
A.	"Not as a rule. The conversion can be made so completely that a physical person encountering us thinks that we, too, are physical."
Q.	What of those who claim to have been taken up in your craft?
A.	"In our contacts with earthlings, we have to be careful not to go beyond their understanding. In these instances, the ships and all entities within them are converted to a vibrational level at which they had the substance of physical things as known to you. Whether the experience was physical or astral is not known to some people who had the experience."
Q.	The astral and etheric concepts are difficult to grasp at first.
A.	"Persist and have faith. There is much to learn."

This last sentence impressed me as a masterful understatement. Already a sense of my own puniness hung over me like a cloud. But I resolved to learn more since nothing had thus far been withheld from me. One of the most puzzling phenomena connected with the saucers; the famous " fireballs" reported in various parts of the US. was the next subject broached by me.

Q.	Are these fireballs dropped from your craft? What is their purpose?
A.	"The fireballs are nullifiers for certain radioactive effects which your scientists do not even know they are releasing. These nullifiers prevent the poisoning of your people, and are released upon the orders of our Heavenly Father. We cannot intervene actively in the cessation of such experiments, but we must do all possible to prevent the wanton destruction of human life resulting from these experiments."
Q.	It has been noted that the air contains a large percentage of copper after these fireballs have been seen.
A.	"This is true. This is part of the fireballs' functions. For the most part, the fireballs are seen in the vicinity of atomic installations and laboratories. But not all fireballs are ours, and all do not have the same purpose."

This final sentence set me thinking very hard along the lines expounded by Mr. Harold Wilkins, the distinguished English saucer writer. Wilkins first book "Flying Saucers On the Attack", bearing a title that was thrust upon him without his consent by his publisher, disturbed many saucer fans who could not bear to think of the saucer beings as not being kind, beneficent entities intent on saving mankind. About this time, I came into contact with the famous "Shaver Mysteries"' which told of the "dero", a greatly degenerated underground race purported to be still living on this planet.

Here, again, confusion seemed to be present, as a large body of thought completely discredited the Shaver Mysteries as a highly imaginative science fiction story. Another equally large body of thought gave great credence to this aspect of the saucer mysteries.

Q.	A question which has greatly disturbed me, concerns the rumors of an underground race on this planet. I would appreciate any information you can give me.

I was hardly prepared for the import, impact and significance of the answer which followed.

"At the core of your planet there dwells a greatly degenerated race, an astral race, which is degenerate not so much in science, but in every moral respect as you know and understand lt. They are capable of space flight within the astral regions around the earth, but are earthbound. They are the forces of Eranus, whom you call Satan. They emerge at the South Pole. On your surface they have allies who are without mercy and without morals. I give you this information that you may be aware of their existence. I enjoin you to forever close any researches into this astral activity in the interests of your own safety. Be on your guard always, be careful and vigilant.

Here, then, was the beginning of the real explanation of the hostile "space" craft. The higher forces, the true interplanetary forces are etheric, the hostile ones astral and OF THIS EARTH.

Any person at this point wishing a more exact, scientific explanation of etheric, astral and physical states of existence, is directed to read "The Power Within", by Professor Dr. Sir. Alexander Cannon, who amongst other things, is an M.D., Ph. D., D. Sc., Ll.D.

Immediately this explanation became available, many pieces in the flying saucer puzzle began to fit into place. I felt that the explanation of the origin of the threatening men in black suits who called upon saucer investigators to shut them up, as related in Gray Barker's "They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers" was very near. Only one of these men was ever identified, one who was seen sitting in the car down in Australia. He was "a known criminal". Who better to carry out the bidding of the creature we call Satan than a man with nothing to lose, a criminal wanted by the police? Could this be one of those "on our surface, without morals and without mercy"?

I felt that further clarifications were required, and directed additional questions were required, and directed additional questions to Ashtar on this subject.

Q.	In our solar system, are there any other physical beings like us?
A.	"No. All beings on other planets in your solar system are etherics. On your planet, as you now know, there are two kinds of beings, physical and astral. Outside the earth-moon system in your solar system, all are etheric."
Q.	How far from the surface of the earth, in our measure, do the astral regions extend?
A.	"125,000 Miles. Within them, the astral beings are confined. At certain times of the year, travel to the moon is possible to the astrals when the astral shells of the two bodies overlap. When these shells separate, however, any entities on the moon are cut off from the earth until the next time the astral shells overlap. NO PHYSICAL OR ASTRAL ENTITY can go beyond the earth-moon system."

To our optics, and observations, any craft capable of traveling 115,000 miles out in space from our surface would be considered a space craft. In fact, however, these astral vehicles from the earth's core can travel that far and no rather. There are, therefore, craft which appear to us as space craft but which are in fact earth- bound machines capable of going no further than the moon, and that far only under certain conditions.

The pattern gradually began to emerge in my mind. Two types Or craft, one a genuine interplanetary space craft, capable of traveling throughout this solar system at will. The other, a pseudo space craft capable of traveling to a certain altitude only. These latter, the hostile ones responsible for many acts of violence against our surface recorded through the ages and having active agents on our surface.

Presumably the two forces are opposed to each other, perhaps with the earth as the prize, or perhaps with something else in view. decided to ask further questions on the nature of this seeming conflict going on above our Earth.

Q.	What is the nature of the astral regions around the earth?
A.	"The astral world is divided into two broad sections. First, there are the bodiless entities from your surface, the so-called dead people, who must become incarnate again in order to qualify to pass on completely to the etheric state. Some of these entities are awaiting what will be their last incarnation. Others are those who have had their carnate existence terminated abruptly or accidentally, such as soldiers and criminals. All these entitles have in common the intense desire to become fleshly once more, in order that they may either carry out something left undone, or else may qualify to be no longer earthbound when their incarnations terminate. This is the Garden of Waiting. There are also the monstrosities and phantasmagoria which are degenerate thought forms. The other great section Or the astral world is the astral regions of evil which surround and interpenetrate Earth, inhabited by beings who are forever discarnate and forever earthbound by decree of the great God of the Universe. These beings cannot enter the Garden of Waiting. It is against these forces that we of the etheric world are warring."
Q.	What form does this war take? Is it a clashing of space ships in combat?
A.	"It is not a matching of violences, as you suggest, but a battle for the control of earthly minds. Our purpose is to overcome the destructive influence, the physically violent influence which the dark ones seek to exert over mankind. Our purpose is to nullify the astral influence by restraining beings devoted to destruction and physical violence. The dark ones seek to relegate the whole world to the darkness wherein they dwell and have power, and there- by increase their influence further. Our task, as decreed by the Heavenly Father is to nullify, overpower and banish the work of the dark ones by good influences upon humanity. This is the true nature of the battle, rather than spacecraft versus spacecraft."
Q.	These astrals from the earth's core are, I take it, the 'Dero' of legend? The Dero of the 'Shaver Mysteries?'
A.	"No. The Dero are no longer confined in the caves of legend and story but are reincarnated again upon your surface. Many of your eminent scientists on Earth, driving forward with the perfection of ever more prodigious blast forces, are reincarnated deros. Because of their prior lives as cannibals and degenerate beings, they are prone to exert themselves for destructive ends, since they fall easily under the astral influence."

Here, in this latter message is perhaps the explanation for some of our scientists turning away in disgust from the perversion of their talents for destructive purposes, while others seem to flourish best perfecting destruction.

At this time I sought from the higher forces an explanation of the matter of which their craft are constructed, since it does not seem to be of an order comparable to our own.

Q.	I wish to ask a question or two concerning etheric substance.
A.	"We will be glad to answer whatever we can for you. We wish to arm you with as much knowledge as possible, and are limited in this only by your power to assimilate it. I do not wish to talk over your head, but we will supply you with knowledge to the limit of your understanding."
Q.	I am puzzled by the concept of etheric matter. For example, there is one case on record where one of our jet aircraft flew right through a space ship without hitting anything solid whatever. Are your ships made of a vaporous substance, or are they a different form of earthly matter?
A.	"We have all the elements you know about on earth, and many more. The etheric form of these metals differs in its atomic and molecular structure from earth made metals. for example, the distance between the nucleus and the orbiting electrons of the etheric iron nucleus is much greater than in iron as you know it on earth. This permits the atoms of earthly steel to pass right through the atoms of etheric steel in such a way that nothing happens to either form of steel. The etheric steel enjoys a higher vibratory rate than earthly steel, and is therefore not apparent to earthly vision, or, if you prefer, physical eyesight. Under certain circumstances it becomes visible, as in the presence of certain atmospheric gases of Shan (Earth), or at will in accordance with the desire Or the controlling intelligence. No matter how great the mass of the etheric substance, even a space ship measuring many miles across in your measure, physical matter cannot damage or injure it or its contents."

This last sentence might well be studied and acted upon by those military minds in various countries who have ordered airplanes to try and shoot down the saucers. Not only can the entitles in the saucer read the minds of the attacking pilots with exactness, as revealed in many reports of such encounters, but even if the saucers are placed in a position where bullets or rockets or shells can be fired at them the military are wasting time and fuel. The saucers cannot be shot down.

Q.	When you speak of making etheric matter visible at will, is this the way that George Adamski was permitted to take his now famous photographs?
A.	"Yes. 'Ether Ships' as they have been called on your surface have been made visible to and for certain individuals, selected, upon your surface, of whom Adamski is one. Normally, the ships are a part of the invisible world."
Q.	If one were to develop astral vision, or the "psychic eye" would he then see the ships?
A.	"No. Not unless the vibratory rate of the ship were converted to the vibratory range of astral vision. Remember, the etheric I vibratory rate is higher than the astral. Very few physical humans have some perception of the etheric, but they are not normal people as you know them and for the most part dwell in very secluded places. As a general rule, perception of the etheric through vision cannot be accomplished except through the will of the etheric, converting etheric substance to a vibratory level where it is physically visible."

These explanations, rendered down to very elementary terms for my benefit indicate that there are certainly higher orders of matter than that which we know. The explanations of etheric matter and its behavior can be applied to numerous sightings where only lights, or vaporous forms were seen, rather than clear cut sightings of a hard, solid physical craft which could be clearly described.

It is interesting to learn from these last few messages that George Adamski, long the recipient of derision, disbelief and even abuse, is a "selected" individual whose photographs are NOT fakes, flukes or figments of the imagination.

Any revelations about any kind of persons living at the core of our planet are certainly subject to a barrage of questions, most of which I put to the higher forces.

What is the nature of the core of our planet? Is it solid, or hollow?

"The center of the earth consists of matter of a density comparable to air, although it is not air. You would term it hollow in your expression. It is here that the forces of Satan dwell. Near the south magnetic pole, they emerge in their craft and circle the planet. Clumsy and primitive by our technology, their craft are still greatly advanced above yours, and they are easily able to outperform any mechanical aircraft of physical manufacture. They are also considerably faster, being capable of speeds in excess of three thousand miles per hour."

It is interesting to note that for aeons the legend has been part of our lives in the Christian world that Satan is in hell and that hell is down there, underneath. Hell has also been depicted as an extremely hot place, but nevertheless still a place. Perhaps "matter of a density comparable to air" is exactly what we have at the center of the earth. All theories and indications are that it is hot at the center of the earth, but the time honored one that the core of the earth i8 molten material is theoretical in the extreme since _no one has been there to find out_, and the deepest oil bore and the deepest mines are but infinitesimal fractions of the total thickness of the earth.

This seemed to be the appropriate time to learn more about the powers of flight of these astral beings, who "emerge near the South Pole".

How far above our surface may they penetrate and can physical man penetrate this far? That is, will man ever be able, in physical form, to penetrate this far?

"The limit of their altitude attainment is 125,000 miles. Physical man is also limited to this extension. In the upper portions of it however, man in the physical form will exist only with extreme difficulty and after years of training and development. As previously described, when the moon's astral envelope or aura overlaps with that of the earth, commerce is possible to and from the moon. At other times, commerce is not possible. At times of contact, the astral entities from the core of Shan travel to the moon."

In looking at our modern jet and experimental flyers, currently reaching out for 2,000 mph speeds, one sees these intrepid men clad in special pressure suits which have the function of holding his body together and keeping his blood in the right portions of his anatomy. He must take along his own atmosphere at the altitudes he is flying, and refrigeration of his aircraft is necessary at the fantastic (?) speed of two thousand miles per hour. To me, it is not unreasonable that the physical vehicle is already out of its element when this is required to keep life in it, and that before long we will find the conditions outlined in the communications above to be true, namely, that physical man will reach his limit. It would seem that he might well reach the moon in these endeavors. What therefore, might he expect to find there?

Q.	What is the nature of the life on the moon. Are the moon people physical or astral?
A.	"The moon people are physical in form and astral in activity and allegiance. They are allied with Satan."

This information would indicate that the great rush mankind is making to get to the moon is only likely to be exceeded by his haste to get down again when he meets with Satan's allies once there.

The various types of craft sighted have also been the subject of great speculation. A considerable number of sightings have been recorded in Australia and New Zealand, especially of cigar shape, or cruciform machines. It is interesting that these countries are in Southern latitudes. Perhaps there is some way, I thought, to distinguish friend from foe.

Q.	Is there any broad general method by which the etheric or friendly craft, can be distinguished from the astral machines from the center of the earth?
A.	"As a general rule you may conclude that all cigar shaped craft are potentially hostile to your people. These are the craft from the center of the earth which have carried out and are carrying out hostile acts against your people. Our craft are for the most part heel shaped, or disc shaped. This is a rule of thumb, as you term it, for distinguishing between them."
Q.	We read much about craft which flew in earlier civilizations, such as Atlantis. Are these astral craft comparable to Atlantean machines?
A.	"They are almost identical with those craft. They are of course, made of a material that is akin to, but of a higher vibratory form than your own matter. They are therefore not normally visible to your optics."
Q.	By whom are these craft manned?
A.	"They have a variety of beings in these craft. They may be human type entities in the astral body, in every way similar to yourself. They may be elementals, sub-human slaves of the astrals, or they may be astral monsters of a proportion and type likely to fill you with terror were you to contemplate them. In your measurement, many of them are gigantic, and horrible to behold. The craft may be manned by all or any of these creatures."

This would seem to provide the long-sought answer to the many monster stories connected with the flying saucer phenomena. It should be remembered that astral entities are not subject to gravity, and therefore we may expect strange manifestations when they are seen. particularly the case of the Sutton, W. Va., monster comes to mind. A craft was seen shooting overhead, and then the boys who went to look for it encountered this towering, horrible creature which broke and ran with the switching on of a flashlight. It did not run, but rather "bounced', across the fields, indicating that despite its size, it was not subject to gravity or was weightless, as we would say. Since the craft was visible when it landed, it is probable that atmospheric conditions in that area were suitable for rendering astral matter visible, accounting for both the sighting of the ship and the encounter with the monster.

The battles and encounters which have taken place between various sub-human forms in various parts of the world, including the now famous flight in Colombia reported by Keyhoe in "Flying Saucer Conspiracy" would indicate that Ashtar's description Or the hostile crews is indeed accurate.

On one occasion a pitched battle took place between these elementals and a farm family in West Virginia, and despite the fact that the farmers shot and riddled the little men time and again they could not "kill" them. This obviously indicates to the reason that these beings were not of the same order or matter as ourselves, and in addition were hostile.

One thing connected continuously with the appearances of these "little green men", who might turn out to be much more durable than the newspaper writers and radio commentators who deride stories featuring them, is their frequent sighting near water reservoirs and similar places. In addition, flying saucers have many times been seen in areas where masses of water have mysteriously disappeared overnight, leaving a green saponaceous scum on the surface.

Q.	On occasions, creatures fitting the descriptions of the elementals you have described have been seen stealing water, or water has disappeared in large amounts following saucer sightings. Why is this?
A.	"Water is a valued commodity in the center of the earth where they dwell. One of the reasons they come to your surface is to steal water, which they do from tanks, lakes, rivers and reservoirs as convenience dictates."

If it is as hot in the center of the earth as legend and theory both dictate, water might well be a "valued commodity .

Through these messages an interesting explanation of many saucer phenomena is made available. What concerned me more than anything else, however, was the hostility against our surface by the Satanic forces. How extensive would it be, and what form would it take?

Q.	What are the present intentions of the dark forces concerning assaults on our surface?
A.	"During the next few weeks and months, the astral forces will increase their activities along the western coast of America. Many of their craft will be sighted. Should aircraft of yours be sent against them, they will be destroyed through the agency of a heat ray. Fires of mysterious origin will occur in the Americas and Western Europe. Explosions and unforecasted weather phenomena of a destructive type are a part of their system of attack. Communications will be interrupted and airplanes forced down. Failures in electronic equipment are easily induced by them."
Q.	Many investigators are anxious to know why the dark forces cause these crashes of airplanes and collisions involving loss of life. It is not readily apparent to us, nor exactly how it is done?
A.	"First, let me say that the dark ones are highly desirous of causing destruction to airplanes and do so frequently. They would, if it were possible, bring down many more of them if this action would not result in their being detected by some of your people. The reason for this airplane crashing is really very simple for one who has grasped the concept of astral and etheric realms beyond the physical. Frequently the astrals desire some particular person for a special purpose. Perhaps a technician, an engineer, or one of special skill or talent. They wish to abduct him, in other words. After an airplane crash, when the person concerned is released from his physical body after his 'death" his astral form is seized and taken to the nether regions. The crashes are brought about by several methods. First J instrumentation failure, resulting in collision of one kind or another. "Secondly, production of fire, usually in the vicinity of the fuel tanks. Thirdly, complete suspension of the entire electrical system of the airplane. Fourthly, the use of the force field of their own craft to induce structural failure."

In this intelligence I found great interest because of the one factor that many strange airplane disasters have had in common -- complete suspension of radio communication. The examples are legion. The worst, of course, was the loss off the Florida coast of six Navy planes without a trace ever being found of any of them. Radio communication was interrupted. Strange accidents have had this in common, no communication has ever been received indicating attack. When one casts one's mind back to the days of 'World War II to recall that pilots limping back to England after raids in shattered bombers were frequently able to make distress calls and get themselves picked up, one is led to wonder why it is that these disappearing airplanes under conditions of peace are unable to emit even a squeak of warning before crashing.

M. K. Jessup's book "The Case for the UFO" tells an amazing history of abductions through the years, to most of which this theory would apply. The higher forces, the true interplanetary forces, seemingly have no use for human technology or ordinary earthly people and their skills. The case is different, however, for those who come from below, who are not as well advanced as the etherics, even if they might be advanced over us. The thought occurred to me, even as it doubtless occurs to the intelligent reader that it seems strange that this degenerate race under the earth should have such scientific skills. I asked this question of Ashtar, and received what seems to me to be a piece of first rate cosmic wisdom.

"Scientific advancement is not now, never was, and never will be, related to moral development."

As a member of the human race which is presently striving with might and main to wipe itself off the face of the earth with every scientific refinement, I am compelled to admit the validity of this statement.

One additional factor enters into this saucer phenomena, and this is the question of the THREE DIMENSIONAL SAUCERS or space ships which have been sighted. These are seemingly of an order of matter identical with ours. They are clearly craft of metallic nature. Do they come from some unexplored portion of the earth, or are they, too, interplanetary?

Three dimensional craft have been seen in addition to the others described through these contacts. They are believed to be of a mechanical type. Are there such ships, and where do they come from?

"Yes, there are such ships. They come from the continent that you call Antarctica. Before the Lemurian flood and re balancing of the earth on its present axis, this was a great civilization. It was frozen quickly and its splendor swallowed up under the ice. One city, Rainbow City, remains above the ice, with a few dwellers. They have these craft, and there are also some in Tibet. These dwellers are entirely separate from the forces in the center of the earth, and plan hostility against no one. Mechanically propelled, these craft also outperform earthly aircraft."

In the past year, a tremendous acceleration of interest in the Antarctic has taken place. The U.S. is setting up a permanent base there, in cooperation with the New Zealanders. The Australians and the British also have bases and expeditions going to Antarctica. On top of all this, and ominously, the Soviets had an expedition down there recently. No portion of the earth is further from the Russian bailiwick than the Antarctic. Never before has there been a Russian expedition to the South Polar regions.

Much of this activity can be explained away by the Geophysical Year, but in the light of the communications contained in this manuscript, I am inclined to think that more is at stake than this.

My own view is that part of the story is known to the various governments. I believe that the majority of the major nations know, in their highest circles, that some saucers are coming from the center of the earth. It is also my belief that evidence has been presented the governments to the effect that the whole world is in the power of the craft from the center of the earth, and that this is the reason for the so-called "conspiracy" regarding saucer information.

Perhaps the governments are being wise, in suppressing this somewhat awesome information. Panic is an ugly thing, especially on a nation-wide scale which would conceivably follow any announcement of a general nature telling the truth. Added to this, the concept of astral beings, and etheric beings is presently beyond most people, although abundant evidence is available that such creatures exist, including evidence from scientists whose qualifications place their utterances on a basis of high authority.

At the present time, any person claiming contact with space people is subject to ridicule. At the head of the battalions who ridicule these claims are the saucer writers themselves, who are making the fundamental mistake of thinking that this entire saucer mystery can be explained on the basis of known physical science. No valid explanation of the saucer mysteries is available on a purely physical basis. For this reason, I feel that the information which has come through me, offering as it does reasonable explanation for almost all observed phenomena connected with the saucers, should be disseminated.

The higher forces, that is, the interplanetary forces, are called "higher" because they are of a higher authority than the astral forces. The interplanetary saucers have power OVER the astral saucers. Performing the mission of their Heavenly Father, it could be no other way. There is no one above God.

As with most of these things, the secret of establishing supremacy over the evil side lies in elevating oneself more fully into the higher side. Dependence upon God for protection, when properly invoked, provides that protection with a certainty, a force) and an impregnability that speaks for itself.

The appearance of the saucers in recent years, and their accelerated activities in contemporary times indicate that mankind is approaching a point where he must choose. His allegiance cannot be for the dark, and also for the light. He cannot go UP, and at the same time go down. He cannot preach good, and do evil. Aspiration to higher things will automatically impel man's evolutionary ascent away from the lower orders of creation. The time is approaching when all must choose.

I quote a further message from Ashtar on this aspect of the flying saucers who are hostile to the bulk of humanity:

"Let me give you this earnest injunction. Cast out all fear, for fear is the lubricant, the food and the vehicle of the dark forces. Without fear, you are truly impregnable, so strive for this attainment."
