In this episode, we brought on Travis Johnson to give his take on how he preforms different types of game calls while in the field, hunting deer.  This is the perfect episode to publish as we are getting close to the rut phase.  The techniques that Travis talks about on this show are things that work for him, but even he says that what he does isn’t the only way to be effective. It’s just a way to preform some of the calls like doe bleats, buck grunts, rattling, etc.  The goals is to take what you hear and apply it to your own style. I want to go ahead and let you know that we had some technical difficulty during the show, but overall what we talk about is solid information. Show Notes:

• Travis started in the outdoor industry at the age of 4 years old.
• The hunting industry isn’t all fun and games.  It’s work, like anything else.
• Travis suggests that you don’t fall in love with hearing your game call, because you might end up calling too much.
• There is a lot to understand when it comes to vocalization in game calls; however, it’s not as hard as you might think to start.
• If you notice a buck and you do a call, assess the situation and see what the buck is doing in response before you call again so that you can adjust the approach for better reaction.
• Don’t just buy a call and try it out the first time in the woods while you hunt.  Travis suggest to bring it with you while you’re driving around and get an idea on how you are making calls.  Get good beforehand.  The woods is not the time to start learning to call.
• Have multiple calls with different sounds on hand to use so that you don’t need to reposition a multi tube call.  One suggestion would be to have a grunt call and maybe a “doe in a can” call for doe bleats.
• Watch your moon phase as it will give you an idea on when you have a higher change to see activity.
• Have confidence in your call.  The calls will work as long as you believe in your ability to use them.

In this episode we speak with Casey Smith about managing a small property to yield big deer.  A lot of us are no strangers to hunting on small properties and sometimes trying to imagine what to do with the little property you have can be challenging.  Casey doesn’t just play around with ideas, he’s in the fields trying out things that he’s learned over the years. It just so happens that he also loves to share his passion for hunting, the preparation of the land he’s managing while showing restraint to allow the deer population to grow.  Enjoy!

Show Notes:

• If you keep deer feed and give them as little pressure as possible, you’ll have deer.
• Try to establish year round food sources.
• To keep costs down, Casey would try to purchase local seeds that farmers would normally plant that deer would eat. If it worked for farmers and deer ate it then why couldn’t you do the same and save on cost?
• Know your property and who hunts outside the property line.  If you have hunters near, then you might want to plant your fields more in the center of your property to help draw the deer to stay in your property.
• The best education for Casey about hunting and the land management was by taking time to learn from other people.
• If you set your property up with food plots to draw in turkeys, you will in turn provide deer with great bedding areas plus year round food source as well.  This also gives does areas to hide fawns in the spring.
• Another idea for land management would be to do controlled burns.  This brings new life to the property which is great for all wildlife that would live on the property.
• Start establishing mineral sites on your property.  Try to put near water.  Tips... check out tractor supplies for salt blocks that are used for cows because if cows eat it why wouldn’t deer. It’s almost the same nutritionally as a trophy rock, but at a third the price.  Use deer cain and pour it all over the salt block to get the deer attracted to it.
• If you are going to do food plots, make sure to do soil tests and that you fertilize them.
• When taking on new property, meet the neighboring property owners and try to learn their hunting intentions and let them know yours.  This will help you understand the hunting situation surrounding your property.

Do you even know what’s going on in Africa right now with lions?  I bet you don’t. Heck, we didn’t know the real story either and with all the news, media and their one sided agenda, it just made it even harder to get the truth.  After speaking with Cody Draper on his most resent African Lion hunt, he was adamant that we contact Aaron Neilson as he is one of the few people who actually understands the whole story.  Well, that’s who we have on here today and I assure you that you will be satisfied with what Aaron has to say.  Why do we feel Aaron is the right guy to be speaking with? Well… how about that he’s hunted in Africa over 1000 days, which is an incredible feat in itself, so we think it’s safe to say that Aaron knows what he’s talking about.

Fun Fact:

Africa is a continent, it’s not a country.  There are 54 soviet countries on the continent of Africa.

Show Notes:

• What most western Americans don’t understand is that Africa is a third world country and thus the people that live there live by third world rules.
• As human population grows, wild animals will always loose.  When the wildlife starts to encroach on humans, like the lions, humans start killing them off, because lions and predators like them start killing off live stock, like cows.
• 100% of the animals are used in Africa, so nothing goes to waste.  There is a large amount of money coming in to help preserve the wildlife.
• What most, if not all, anti-hunters and animal rights activities don’t understand is that we, the hunters, are the largest, if not, the only contributor in habitat protection and conversation.
• The outfitters put every effort to insure that the wild lions that are killed are at least 6 plus years old before harvesting them. There is no full proof way to know for sure as they are still field judging of a wild animal. It’s not what it was like ten years ago when they would just shoot a lion.
• Hunting in Africa is more part of a conservation minded hunting instead of sport hunting that many like to portray.
• Aaron helped cofounded a lion conservation taste force which brought scientist and non-hunters together and to create the hunt able lion definition.  It’s basically a guideline on which lions to take. It’s by no means a law, but it has been adopted by hundred’s of safari clubs, outfitters and booking agents around the world.
• The only people that are protecting these animals are the hunters. Quote from Aaron to anti hunters and activists:  What you’re doing is saving these animals to death.
• We asked Aaron to share how to have a conversation with anti hunters in a compelling way.
• Aaron feels that within the next 20 to 30 years, private game reserves will be the only last strong hold for African wildlife.
• Aaron is a international booking agent and no, we did not know that ahead of time. It just came out during the conversation.

Anthony Dixon is back to share one of his extreme hunting trips that he took with Michael Waddell on Bone Collector back in 2011.  It was an Adak, Alaska Caribou hunt.  If you’ve been following our show for a while, you know that a Caribou hunt in Alaska is my Top-Of-The-Bucket-List hunts so needless to say (but I’m going to) this episode was something that I was really looking forward to recording. It was a pleasure to hear Anthony’s take on the whole experience because he set the stage really well on what it was like being out there. I hope you enjoy!

Fun Fact:

Adak is an island in Alaska where at one point in time was a military base (after research I found out it was a Naval Air Facility), but was abandoned back in 1997 and reopened as Adak Airport. The facility was designated a National Historic Landmark for its role in World War II, although most of its elements from that period have been demolished or lay in ruins.

Show Notes:

• Adak means:  The Birthplace of the Winds.
• This is a do it yourself type of hunt, but it’s very affordable for the average hunter to achieve.
• Caribous were transported onto the island years ago to help supply the people who lived there as a meat source.
• Back in 2011 there were around 60 to 100 people who still lived in Adak, so it’s a very small community or at least based on Anthony’s recollection of his trip from back in 2011.
• I asked Anthony why Adak and he said Adak is a do-it-yourself hunt experience in Alaska which was the type of hunt he wanted.
• Anthony, Shawn and Michael Waddell, and Steve, the camera man, rented 4-wheelers to help get them in and out of the island.
• They went out about 5 miles or more deep into the island and there is no help so you are all on your own to survive.
• It’s a hard terrain to hunt, because of its high valleys, large mountains and it rained, making the ground wet and muddy.
• There are no other predators other than human on this island.
• Anthony brought up the mindset of “in and out – and save” while on hunts like these, because the simplest mistake can effect your hunt and everyone else.
• As a perfect example of who Anthony is, during the conversation, he jumps right in to teaching archery techniques.  I don’t mind, because he has a wealth of knowledge and I’m always open to hearing his thoughts and ideas so that I can be a better bow shooter.
• Important fact to be aware of is that you might find yourself in a few spots where there are some unloaded ordinance or a better way to put it… decommissioned grenade launchers. Keep an eye out for them.
• If Anthony would do the hunt again, he would do it in a boat on the south end of the island. You can’t pay a captain over there to do that, because they are not guides and don’t have a license so you would need to find a trade that can happen like a hunt somewhere else in the states.
• If you go on a hunt like this to Alaska for animals like Caribou with a group, the dynamics of your team is everything.
• When you come home, if you’re a dad then jump back in the role as a dad and be a good dad.  Let your family know how important they are to you and show them how much you care and appreciate them.

In this episode we spoke with Cody Draper on his recent African Lion hunt.  This was what most would consider an extreme hunt right out of the movie, “Ghost and the Darkness”. Well not really, but if you’ve seen that movie with Val Kilmer and Michael Douglas, there is a part near the end of the movie which gives a perfect example of how powerful these lions really are. Cody did experience something similar with his lion hunt which he shares all about it on the show.  Cody also dives in on a few of his North American hunts near the end of the conversation so make sure to listen to it all.  Enjoy!

Show Notes:

• To hunt a lion in Africa with your bow, you have to be approved first.  You can’t just purchase a tag and go. It requires approval beforehand so make sure to do your homework in what regulations you need to follow.
• The total time it took to hunt the lion was about 12 hours when they committed to a specific lion.
• The lion hunt Cody went on was in Kalahari, Africa.
• You ultimately need to rely on the guide you pick to insure legitimacy in every step of the pre hunt, the hunt and what happens after the hunt is over.
• Nothing goes to waste with the animal.
• The hunt is only 10% of the experience.  You learn so much about the culture and the area that you’re in, which adds to the overall experience.
• Get with a qualified agent when traveling so that they can help to handle your flight and weapons transportation arrangement.

• You need to be not only physically ready, but also mentally ready for taking on Big Horn Sheep.
• Some advantages to being a native Canadian is that you can get almost all individual hunting tags for around $60.00 and that also including Big Horn Sheep (Ram) as well.  Canada might have higher taxes, but heck, with the cost of the tags, it might be worth looking at moving to Canada.
• Cam works on shooting at different angles and putting his body in different difficult positions in the preseason.  He will even put on a bag and put himself in as many uncomfortable situations so that he can stretch his ability during the season.  He will even wear his heavy camo clothing during the offseason to help train.
• Give yourself about two years to plan out your first Big Horn Sheep hunt. This will give you time to reach out to many hunters, guides and outfitters and learn as much as you can.  Don’t try to rush this type of hunt, because it requires a lot of preparation.  It can be done last minute but you really need to know what you are getting yourself into.
• Know the local regulations for taking a sheep.  Some areas require that the sheep be at least 7 1/2 years or older or full curl.  Each province can be different.  Also, full curl means that the horns curls past the bridge of its nose. It’s also up to interpretation but it’s best to find out ahead of time.

Top 5 Things Cam carries at all times when hunting:

1. Bow and arrows.
2. Backpack.
3. Really good pair of boots.
4. A really good pair of binoculars and rangefinder.
5. A backpack target *gives you practice shot opportunities while out in the field to double check that your bow is still tuned.

Cool Travel Tip: Cam sometimes puts a bicycle sticker on his bow case which he feels helps when traveling.  Some people think the bow case is just a bike broken down in parts for shipping.  Not a bad idea if traveling in known areas where anti hunters might be a problem.

So fitness and hunting can coincide with one another, it’s true.. don’t believe it? Well in this episode you’ll find out how and why we feel it’s relivent.  We spoke with Dan Staton, the owner of CrossFit Spokane Valley in Washington and the guy behind Elk Shape website.  Dan was also one of the original owners of Train To Hunt.  We go over some simple ways to start getting back in shape and even how Crossfit might be a key to that goal.  Crossfit isn’t the only way to become hunt strong, but after hearing what Dan has to say, you might feel intrigued enough to give Crossfit a shot.  Look, the goal is to be your very best at hunting and being strong only helps in that achievement.

Here’s a thought…  do you want to harvest the weakest animal or the strongest in the herd?  My guest is that you want the biggest, strongest oldest bull alive, correct?  Well if that is the case, shouldn’t you at least own it to the animal to be at your very best before taking it’s life?  It seems only fair in my opinion.

Dan recently came back from the Crossfit Games 2016 and he shared some of his personal experience while attending.  Dan gave a good perspective on delayed gratification from the Crossfit games and hunting.

Dan started Crossfit in 2006 and in fact, was not for Crossfit before he understood the value it can provide.  This is a common situation among many people, but as each year comes and goes, more and more people turn to Crossfit as an option.

One of the things that Dan fully believes is that fitness can truly help off set your hunting skills by allowing you to hunt harder and longer with more effectiveness.

Get out your pen and pad and get ready to start taking notes, because Dan shares some great hunting tips while in the backcountry.

Fitness Tips For A Beginner:

• Start walking everyday for 20 minutes in an interval training style. Speed up, slow down throughout the walk and wear a backpack when you can.
• Look at your nutrition.  Weigh and measure your food and cut out the crap, no fast food.  You should be able to, over time, drop at least 5 pounds which makes a big difference.

Throughout the show we go over a few hunts that Dan has lined up for this season and they seem amazing.  We can’t wait to get him back on the show and share how the season ends and hopefully hear some awesome stories.

Have you been in a situation where you needed to figure out how to eat healthy while on a multi day hunt?  If you said yes then I’m sure you have resorted to buying dehydrated food at least ones from companies like Mountain House, etc… right?Well if you’re anything like me you know that not all the packets they make taste good, plus it seems like they always have a two portion size which is overkill.  Try packing 3 to 4 days worth and you start to realize that most dehydrated foods are crazy big, take up way too much space and quite frankly, don’t taste all that great.  I’ve had this issue for years, but today, my friends and fellow listeners, I have a solutions and that solution is Heather’s Choice.  Not only are these packets crazy small (single portion), they are also the only dehydrated food that I’ve found using only the highest quality ingredients.  I wanted to know more about Heather’s Choice and so I reached out to Heather and she was graciously willing to take some time out of her afternoon in Alaska and give us some insight on her company and dehydration process.  Heather has a background in Paleo Nutrition and a degree in Sports Nutrition. Nothing directly; however, for the ones who go on long hunting trips, weight and pack size is very important and every ounce counts when figuring out what to pack in.

Cost for Heather Choice:  This is my own personal opinion, but the price is actually reasonable based on the quality ounce-per-ounce, if you understand nutritional value and pack in value.  When I brought that up to Heather, she made good point that each packet has 6 ounces of quality protein packed in.  Remember, quality is important.  Just because you can get a $0.99 cent burger at a fast food restaurant doesn’t mean that the meat and flavor is of the same quality as a $5.00 to $15.00 burger at a higher end restaurant.  You know this to be true, so why question it.  You pay for the best, but in relation to price with Heather’s Choice over other dehydrated foods, the cost isn’t really that much more.  You know the source of ingredients is of the highest quality and designed to give you maximum space when packing in.  The cost of Heather’s Choice ranges from $5.00 to $8.00 to $15.00.  If you are used to buying food based on price along “cheap crap” then Heather’s Choice might not be of interest. If you’re looking for healthier options, because you care about what you eat while backpacking, camping or multi day hunting trips and you also care about the weight and size limitations, then Heather’s Choice is the way to go.

How important is nutrition overall?

Heather shared that 80% of your physique or performance is based on food, because food gives us the building blocks for having healthy muscles and faster healthier recovery. Heather brought up a good point that people in general tend to put more time in the gym to workout well before putting any solid effort towards cleaning up their diet.  After a person does put more focus on their diet, they start to feel better and see better results overall.   The reason why I asked Heather this question is because nutrition doesn’t stop while you’re out on a multi day hunt.  You need the proper nutrition while out-in-the-field to stay focused and have sustainable energy to get the job done.

Multi day hunting tip!  It’s better to have heathy fat sources to burn instead of carb (Carbohydrate) sugars.  Fat is a more efficient source of food to burn while in the back country as it’s going to fuel your body longer and can help keep you from having to reach for a snack less often.

What to look for when buying meat:  do some research on how the animal was raised.  What did the animal eat? Was it raised on open pasture gracing on grass? Are you buying 100% grass fed or grass finished?  Note!  Grass Fed does NOT mean Grass Finished and Heather took a moment and shared the difference which was a real eye opener. Do you know the difference?

A Few Dehydration Process Tips:

• When making a meal, best practice is to cut everything in quarter inch pieces.
• It’s easier to use ground meat instead of inch pieces of stew meat.
• The thicker the recipe is better, because soup or broth based meals would flow off the tray.
• Look at your micronutrients balance, because something that is very fatty like a ribeye steak wouldn’t really dehydrate at all. That’s why jerky is normally from very lean meal source.

On this episode, we did a camp fire setting (but on the phone), to go over the Pre Rut, Rut or Peak Rut and Post Rut phases.  We changed up the dynamics of this episode by bring on three different hunters in three different regions to share what they personally do to capitalize on each phase of the rut.  It’s packed full of useful tips.  The guests we brought on are Andy Garcia, Graham Johnson and Tommy Hale. Enjoy!

Andy Garcia (Texas) Rut Phases Tips:

• Knowing the deer in your area and pick one deer and go after it.
• Run camera to know the pattern
• Rut peeks around second of December
• Corn Feeders are your friend in this area. (controversial topic)
• Get up on top of a hill near a corn feed and spot and stock.
• We rattle for about two weeks and then we put it away.

Graham Johnson (Georgia) Rut Phases Tips:

• Hunt the does
• Graham personally doesn’t do any calls during the rut.
• Rut peeks around end of November, early December.
• Take the older does as they will bust your all the time.
• Get the tarsal glands and hang them in the woods.

Tommy Hale (Missouri) Rut Phases Tips:

• Hunt the does because the buck are around them.
• Hunt all day because you don’t know when they will show so bring something to read.
• Tommy feels in his area the best cover scent wold be diesel fuel.
• Go back to hunting the food source after the rut.
• Hunt based on the weather pattern because when there is a big change in air patterns, the deer tend to be up on their feet.

Lessons Learned:

Andy feels that the buck bombs are amazing for the first time around but afterwards they tend to be a waste of time as it seems like the deer are not reacting anymore from it.

Tommy is OCD when it comes to scent control but for good reason. The less he smells like a human and more like the woods, the better chance he has because he eliminated a variable.  He uses scent free nose jammer wipes on his bow to help with scent control.

Graham learned to always have an arrow nocked even after shooting a deer because you never know when another doe or buck might show up.  Graham takes two sweatshirts and wraps them around his feet during the cold weather.

General show notes:

When speaking with Garret, he was very open about how making your own jerky is “a great source of healthy snack”.  That is as long as you are making it.  If you go to a store to buy a bag a jerky, however convenient it may be, that packaged jerky is loaded with sugar and lots of filler ingredients that you don’t know what it is or how to even say it.

Garret makes jerky either with strips or ground and though he prefers using ground as the primary choice he gave us a really good tip on how to make it with strips.  First, don’t let the meat thaw completely as it will make it easier to cut the strips in the same strip sizes.  Second, aim for 1 quarter of an inch in size for the strips and then marinade the meat overnight.

When using the dehydrator, you usually want to let the meat cook for at least 6 hours or longer.  A good rule of thumb is that if you bend the jerky and it snaps in half then you cooked it too long.  You don’t want to undercook it either.  You want it to be cooked enough so that when you try to bend it that it will start to crack but not snap in half.  You want to hear and feel cracking but it should still stay together.   You don’t want to under cook it, because there may still be harmful bacteria.

How to make your own healthy jerky blends:
I have to say I have always been kind of cautious doing this because I never wanted to mess up the limited amount of meat I had so I tend to fall back on pre-blends to insure taste but I want to start taking the steps in making my own.  Garret gave some good tips to get me started which I think everyone might like to know.

• Substitute brown sugar with coconut sugar, honey, or agave.
• Add red pepper flakes to for a spicy kick.
• Using broth (beef, chicken, or vegetable broth) to make it a liquid spread.
• Use salt to cure the meat.
  • You can use a type of salt that Morton provides called Tender Quick  which is a concentrated salt used for the purpose of preserving meats.

How to cure the meat:  
Salt is the main form of curing the meat, but you want to make sure you use just the right amount of salt so that you don’t over salt.  It’s better to use less salt than more; however,  if you don’t put enough salt then you can expose yourself to harmful pathogens.  So based on some of Garret’s recipes he uses, an example would be to use about 1 tsp for every 1 pound of meat.  This would be a good place to start.  

A recipe that Garret really likes is one he got from a website from Alergy Free Alaska.

• 5 tsp Garlic powder
• 4 tsp Onion powder
• 3 to 4 tsp of sea salt  * Garret usually only does 2 tsp
  
• 2 tsp of ground black pepper
• 1 quart plus 1 cups of beef, chicken or vegetable broth
• 1 tbsp of liquid smoke
• 2 tsp of unsulphured molasses *Garret uses honey
  

Mix it all up with the meat and let it set for up to 12 to 18 hours.  Use jerky gun to separate the meat on the dehydrator trays.  Dehydrate the mean between 4 to 6 hours.

This week on The BowRush Podcast, we covered Mathews Archery with Brad Christian, who works at Mathews as their Brand and Marketing Manager, who shared with us some history about Mathews and talked about their new product line.   If you have ever watched a hunting show or looked at a hunting magazine in your life, then you’ve seen Mathews Archery at some point.  Over the years Mathews has developed game changing bows that give the slogan “catch us if you can” a true meaning and with the NEW No-Cam product line, well, it looks like Mathews has done it again.

General show notes:

Mathews Archery has been around for over 20 years. Before Mathews Archery was formed, Matt originally started a company called McPherson Archery which he sold so that he could produce the SoloCam bows by Mathews which Matt believes was the answer to the trimming issue with dual cams at the time. It happen to be over 10 years afterwards Matt bought back the McPherson name to create a dual cam series which they called the Monster and was very successful.

When speaking with Brad, I asked him how the No-Cam bow came to the market.  Brad said that it was a combination of the Monster series dual cam and the AVS® Cams system which helped Matt finally have a process he needed to design and achieve the No-Cam system.  This also allowed the No-Cam to have the Nock point completely centered between the axels which is not normal to any other bow on the market.   If you ask anyone who has shot the No-Cam bow, you will hear them say that this bow is Dead-In-The-Hand.

No-Cam TRG: is the target line.

No-Cam HTR: is the bow hunter line.  The No-Cam HTR is more than effective for both hunting as well as if you want to do 3D shoots. Another good option is their Chill X Pro bow, which is their dual cam system and has a longer axle to axle and would be perfect for the hunter that is looking for speed.

Mathews On-A-Budget Bow option:  So if you are on a budget and are looking for a quality bow still made by Mathews, you might want to check out their Mission line at http://missionarchery.com which is made by Mathews at their Mathews facility.  The Mission bows will cost between $200 to $500 range depending on the model, but you will be buying a bow knowing it was made by Mathews.

Size note…  Always USE Mathews Zebra Strings even when it comes time to replace your string as the Zebra Strings preform best on Mathews bows over aftermarket varieties.

What about Mathews Warranty:  On a personal experience, Mathews has taken care of me with my Mathews Drenalin in replacing the limbs at no cost even after years of wear and tear.  This was also after already repairing my bow years beforehand when Scott accidentally damage by bow and even then Mathews replaced and repaired at no cost.  When I said this to Brad, he confirmed that even with the slim number of warranty situations that come up, Mathews will always take care of their shooters and stand behind their product.  I can agree based on my experience so far and have appreciated the ease in which they handled each situation.

Welcome back to another awesome addition of The BowRush Podcast.  This week we covered Obsession Bows with the Co-Owner/Founder Dennis Lewis.   Talk about a down to earth kind of guy who loves what he does.  You might not know this, but Dennis is hard at work making the bows just like the ones who work for him.  Obsession Bows have sure made a big name for themselves for just a young company, but maybe it’s because who’s behind it all.   What you will learn from Dennis is that he’s a straight shooter and tells it how it is for the company, their bows and the future.  It was truly a pleasure speaking with Dennis.  Side note, since Obsession Bows are made here, in Georgia, maybe I’ll try to see if I can take a tour of their facility.

General show notes:
Obsession Bows do a color fusion process for their wicked camo designs which is a new process that many bow companies are not doing.  Obsession bows chose to do this instead of the water transferred (dipping of bows) process which is how it’s been done in the past and still done today from other companies.  As many are aware, water transfer process has a tendency to wear off over time, especially around the handle due to sweat and chemicals we use.  Color Fusion is a process done by a heated transfer of a dye. Basically think of it as if you were to give your riser a tattoo.

Obsession Bows are building their bows with a two track cam system which is the latest in bow architecture.  These cams are a mirror image cam from top to bottom.  Nice tidbit of information is that the two track cam system was invented here, in Georgia.

What set Obsession apart back in 2014 was when they introduced their new design of the riser with the shape of a bat wing and also got exclusive rights to the stormy hardwoods pattern camo.  It was the same year they won the Editor’s Choice Award.

Best Obsession bow for this year: is the Fusion 6 because of it’s a 32 inch axel to axel setup; however, the Delta Six is the runner up as it’s a very good hunting bow.

Sneak-Peak for 2016:  Obsession is working to add Realtree and Mossy Oak camo pattern to their bow line.  On top of that, they are going to let the consumer have more freedom with the pattern of choice.  What Dennis says, is if you want something like a Cryptic camo then you can get it.  He believes that is what set Obsession Bows apart from other companies.

Dennis thinks that their Addiction OBB bow which is a 36 1/2 inch axel to axel bow, might be his personal pick to use for hunting and 3D shooting.  The Evolution and Fusion bows are just as good, but it really depends on your preference.

Some Cool Facts!  In this episode, Dennis is about to school you on different cam design systems and the difference between slim limbs to slit limbs in a way that you may have never known before. Dennis even shared the fact that most, if not, all manufacturers are paying out some sort of licensing or pertinent fees which seems crazy.  I won’t share it on the post, but man it will have your heads turning.  It’s in the second half of the show.

With all the good things to say about Obsession bows, the thing that sucks about them, and Dennis is the first to admit it, is their current delivery time.  That being said, it’s only because the demand for their bow is so high, keeping up with the orders has been a challenge which is why they are currently putting so much work into building an in house color fusion process.  This should allow them to speed up their fulfill time and get your bow in your hand sooner.   I guess if you think about it… anything good takes time and so if you want one of their bows, you’ll just have to wait a little while for it, but hopefully not as long anymore.

Guest – Tommy Hale

In this episode of The BowRush Podcast, I brought Tommy Hale on the show to discuss with me what seems to be a controversial topic: does paper tuning still have a purpose even with today’s compound bows?  No matter where you stand on the subject, I believe Tommy gives valid points on why paper tuning can still be a useful method.  Tommy and I even talk about other tuning methods such as walk back tuning, bare shaft tuning, modified french tuning.  Tommy also discusses how to build your very own paper tuner. This episode was a great continuance from my previous conversation with Justin in Episode #023.

General show notes:

Paper tuning was originally used because the bows back in the day didn’t necessarily have a true center shot which made you have to work around the archer’s paradox.  What is an Archery Paradox? It’s when the arrow is binding as it’s going past the riser.   The purpose of paper tuning is to insure that we get our arrow leaving the bow as straight as we can.

Paper tuning isn’t the only method; it’s really just a starting point.  The cost to build a paper tuner can depend on what you build it with.  Tommy believe as long as you can find a way to suspend the paper in a way that the paper has tension on it you should be fine.  Note** However you decide to make the paper tuner station, you’ll want to have a very sturdy base to keep the tuner as static as possible otherwise you might get false readings on the tares.   A general method archers use today to build the paper tuner is with PVC piping which you can pick up at your local hardware store.

Tommy mentioned Paper Tune-IT Tuning System as a pre-built system for less the $20. You can google to find out more about it and where to purchase.

Types of paper to consider:  butcher paper or wax paper/parchment paper.

Other things that paper tuning can help you identify about your bow which are things like cam lean, spine issues with arrows, nock height, cam timing especially on two cam or a binary cam system.  Tommy has even identified a bent riser on a bow because of paper tuning.

Paper Tuning Tears:  There are 4 main tears.

• Tail Low
• Tail Hight
• Tail Right
• Tail Left

Tommy said that instead of moving your rest around to correct the tear pattern, first start of by turning your yoke on the bow string before you start moving the rest around.  Tommy explains how to preform this on the show.  It seems simple enough but you will need a bow press.

When paper tuning, you’ll only need your target to be 3 to 4 feed away from your paper tuning station.  You want to basically be far enough away so that your arrow has cleared your bow by the time it’s entering the paper.

Tommy believes that no matter which tuning method you choose to do, he personally believes that all these tuning methods need to be done at shoulder level. This will help remove variables in your shot and should give you a more accurate reading.

Welcome back to another awesome addition of The BowRush Podcast.  This week we wanted to do an episode on custom builds that will help you be a better bow hunter. We brought on Justin Munday to shares on how to build a custom arrow spinner which helps analyze your arrow shaft for imperfections.  We even get into the subject of different types of tuning techniques.  If you are interested in custom builds then you’ll like this episode.

General show notes:

The arrow spinner build: The cost to build this can be done for less than $20.00 depending on what you have around the house.  Justin took apart an old CD Walkman and used the rotational motor that moved the CD and attached a rubber band which goes around the arrow. This allows you to remove your hands and have a more effective observation with different perspectives to fully see how your arrow is spinning.

Justin purchased some parts from a home improvement store, but he also used skateboard bearings as the rotational pieces that the arrows rested on.  It seems this is a fairly simple build, but can give you an extra insight on what your arrows are doing.  This is just another way to be more proficient at your skills.

Do it yourself reflecting:  Justin purchased a Bitzenburger Dial-O-Fletch Fletching Jig which allows him to reapply fletching to your arrow.  The jig itself is not that cheap, but over time can be a cost saver if you factor in the time, gas, etc. it takes to have a bow tech do it for you rather than doing it yourself.  Justin talks about different ways to adjust the fletching angle to give you different flight patterns which improve your shot as well as things to look out for when shooting at longer distances.

Tuning Practices:  Justin and I got on the subject about different types of tuning practices that you can do.  We briefly spoke about paper tuning, walk back tuning, French tuning and modified finch tuning. Each have their advantages in helping you narrow down the irregularities in your shot and provide insight on things to adjust on your bow.

Overall, this episode was packed with great topics.  Justin is just an every day bow hunter who has a passion for bow hunting, like myself, and loves sharing what he knows with others.  What I love about talking with people who love bow hunting is that you can learn something from every person you meet.  It was a pleasure chatting with Justin.

Welcome back to another awesome addition of The BowRush Podcast.  This week we covered Elite Archery by bring back Anthony Dixon as he shoots Elite and has a simple way of sharing why he loves these bows.  Anthony even shares on his past experience with a previous company and why he switched.

General show notes:
Elite started to cerakote their bow cams to help cut down on the shimmer that cams normally have.  Elite doesn’t have a large selection of models to choose from but the bows are built for just about everybody.   Elite bows are built on a modular system to change your draw length.

Elite bows are normally heavier than other manufactures by design ranging around 4 pounds and up;  one purpose is to help with better stabilization and weight distribution when the bow is loaded down. Anthony explains why Elite build their bows this way and how pin float patterns play a part in this.  Elite bows hold on target extremely well.

Best Elite bow for the price: Elite bows are around the $800 range.  Anthony’s opinion is that the Elite Synergy is the best bow for the price.  The Synergy is a 33 1/2 axel to axel which is small and perfect for tree stands and ground blinds.  Anthony shoots the Elite Energy 35 at a 28 inch draw length which is a little long at 34 1/2 axel to axel but here is the catch, the Energy 35 sits on target which is great for target shooting.

Anthony explains why target archers are the best in the world and how Elite is starting to make a name for them in that area outside of hunting.  If you do any research, you’ll also find out that Levi Morgan left Mathews Archery and went with Elite Archery and is now shooting Energy 35 as well.

Best Warranty in the business:  Elite Archery gives a limited liability on the bows, but what makes them unique is that they allow you to transfer your warranty to a new owner if you sell it, which means your bow has a higher resell value.  If you were to sell your Elite bow today, the person who buys the bow will have the comfort in knowing the bow is still under warranty.  Elite doesn’t stop there, if for whatever reason you have any issue with the bow while on a hunt, Elite will send you one of their bows fully geared up for free as a loaner so that your hunt isn’t over.

Remove your variables.  Anthony explains that the more variables you have in a bow, the less successful you’ll be and in his opinion, Elite builds bows that have fewer variables.

Zach Holt – Pro Staff and sales rep for Hoyt

Welcome back to another awesome addition of The BowRush Podcast.  This week we covered Hoyt bows with Zach Holt, who is a Pro Staff and sales rep for Hoyt.  You might be asking, why bring on a Pro Staff to speak about the company?  Simply put, they know the bows inside and out and what you will figure out soon enough about Zach during our conversation is that he doesn’t push the bow on you with a hard sell.  He was once a consumer just like all of us so he keeps his approach with that mindset that the end goal is to find the right bow for you. He’s confident that if you give Hoyt an honest chance then Hoyt will be one of your top picks. Zach is the type sale rep who I would like to personally deal with when the time comes to pick a new bow.

General show notes:
Hoyt’s game changer bow was the Carbon Matrix as it was by far the strongest bow Hoyt has ever built.  Fun fact:  Hoyt spent around 10 to 12 years in developing the original Carbon Matrix.  The key component that made it all work together was when they introduced the hollow carbon tubes which helped with the weight ratio.

Best Hoyt bow for the price: The Hoyt Charger.  It has a very similar pocket design and very similar multi layered laminated limbs as to their higher end line but with a price point package.  Zach’s personal opinion is that the Charger is the biggest value in the Hoyt lineup.  Depending on where you live, the price ranges between $599 to $649 walk out ready to kill.   The Charger also has a long draw version to 31 inches so for the guys who are 6’2 – 6’4 and still on a budget, the Hoyt Charger Long can meet their needs.

Zach spoke about really deep concepts to how bows are created.  One of the terms we covered was the dynamic efficiency and how it effects the cams on a bow.

What has always interested me about Hoyt bows is that they have a standard that the bow limbs must be able to withstand 1000 dry fires. The Hoyt risers have to be able to withstand 1500 dry fires with 30 inch draw and 80 pound let-off.  I personally learned the hard way what happens when you dry fire a bow – Scott dry fired my bow before I ever had a chance to shoot my first arrow through it and ended up snapping the string and damaging the cam.  It happens, it happened to me and it could happen to you. Knowing Hoyt builds their bows to withstand this issue is something to take in to consideration.

Zach gave a quote which makes perfect sense… “There is no free lunch in archery”.  He explains what he means on the show.

Daniel Gissendaner APA Archery Pro Staff

Welcome back to another awesome addition of The BowRush Podcast.  In this week’s episode we cover a bow company that you may have never heard before, but they have been around for about 10 years.   The company is APA Archery (https://apaarchery.com) and they are known for making one of the fastest, if not the faster, high speed bow on the market.  They’re a Canadian company, which might be the reason why you have never seen or heard of APA Archery until now.  We brought on Daniel Gissendaner, a Pro Staff for APA Archery.

Their best selling bow is the Mamba M34

You might start to notice that all their bow modules are based on different types of snakes.  The designs match features of snakes as well.

Most of the bow models that APA Archery makes have built in a unique tool kit that sets the bar in invitation. The only bow modules currently that don’t is the Viper Air, Copperhead LTI and the Rattler kids bow.

What is the Took Kit you ask?
Well for starters, you don’t really need a bow press anymore with these bows because they have what they call a cam locking system built right in that will allow you to change out the string to even the ability to do a quick twist or reposition the peep sight.  It has a broadhead wrench, a nock wrench and a knife sharpener.  You might be thinking, this is a gimmick, right? But if you think about it, each serves a purpose and Daniel shares why on the show.  Just take moment and think though, let’s say you were out west during a spot and stock hunt and you need to make some adjustments and or your string broke, what are you doing to do?   The system they created answers these issues in a fast effective way.

These are really interesting bows.  I personally got to shoot them with Daniel while he shared with me the different elements on why these bows are so unique and he was right!  If you are looking for a high speed bow, maybe APA Archery might be the company to look at.

Welcome back to another awesome addition of The BowRush Podcast.  This episode was a very interesting one.  We had Tyler Roach come on and share with us his awesome Colorado Moose hunt that he had last year.  It was well worth the listen because he brings you along with him as he tells his story.  Tyler even shares some of his tips that he’s learned over the years of hunting.

What’s impressive is that Tyler thinks about hunting all year long instead of focusing only when the season is near.  He has spent years hunting elk and other wildlife in Colorado and has learned many skills to make him a deadly hunter.  He’s a great story teller and can share on so many experiences that he has had whether good or bad and yet it is still fun to listen.  Tyler is only in his mid to late 20’s and so he has such a long hunting carrier ahead of him so keep your eye out one day as you might see him on TV one day.

We asked Tyler what’s next for him and he told us that he’s taking steps to get his foot in the outdoor industry by learning how to film hunts professionally.  He has filmed a few hunts in the past but it’s time for him to step up his game and join the big boys of the industry.

Welcome back to another awesome addition of The BowRush Podcast.  I brought back Anthony Dixon again to help me personally with an issue I’ve been having revolving around my bow upkeep.  I know it’s important to keep my bow tuned up but I want to know why and Anthony is great with technical issues like this.

What is the telltale sign that your string is stretching?  You might start to notice that your peep sight is twisting and not centered when at full draw.  A simple solution is to have the string reset to half a turn. In some cases it could be set a full rotation of the string depending on the amount of stretch.

Tips from Anthony:

• Give yourself at least 8 weeks before hunting season to get your bow checked out and serviced.
• Make sure to purchase any new arrows ahead of time* weigh the arrows at the show to make sure they are all equally balanced.
• Make sure to use the same broadheads.
• Depending on the bow, you can periodically rub some oil around the cams and axles and use a toothbrush to help clean up your bow if you start to see dirt sediments forming.
• If you start to see rust around the bolts, get some Testors model paint

How often should you service your bow?  Anthony made a good point that each person and the shooting style and the frequency in which you shoot your bow will weigh in on how often you need to get it checked out.  That being said, you should always keep your eye on the bow every time you shoot.

Anthony provides a simple way to insure your bow is in tuned: 

Set a target up with about 5 bulls eyes to practice.  Take 3 arrows and shot 1, 2 and 3 in a row.  Take the first arrow and color in the area with a black sharpie and write a #1 by it. Repeat for #2 and #3.  Shot again 3 times at each target spot and mark each shots on the paper.  You’ll start to see a pattern.  If your #2 and #3 are up and left for example, you can adjust your sight pins to chase the arrow.  If your sight is micro adjustable, you can move the sight pin to adjust the windage first which is your left and right.  After you adjust for windage, shoot 3 more rounds at the same 3 targets.  You should start to see your arrows more center though your elevation might still be slightly high.  The next step is to adjust the elevation by again chase the arrow and narrow down the offset of the shot placement.    This tuning method is very simple but it can tell you if your bow is on and if you are off. Pay more attention to your windage over elevation as the elevation is usually the lack of form.  Make sure not to do this type of tuning after workouts as it will have an effect on your shot placement which might give you false placement for adjustments.

The MOST important thing to take care on your bow if you can’t personally get your bow serviced is to take care of your string.

What is the knuckle tap on a bow and why is it effective? it’s a simple method to find vibration within the bow which could point to something that needs adjustment and or tightened.

Welcome back to another awesome addition of The BowRush Podcast.  Both Travis and Scott are proactive towards staying physically healthy.  That requires a lifestyle that most of us bow hunters are already actively living.

Let’s start off by asking if you’ve had the chance to listen to our previous episode #014 regarding off season fitness tips to keep you thin and ready for next year.  If you have, then you’ll love this follow up episode with Anthony Dixon as he shares his side on how to handle mental and physical fatigue during the hunt right up to the moment of the shot.  You don’t have to live out west to enjoy what he has to say.

How to handle mental fatigue during that shot opportunity:  The mental fatigue usually happens after the shot, but it’s how you choose to handle that.  The best way Anthony has found to handle it is keeping the moment light.  You don’t want to crack too many jokes, but it’s all in how you choose to control that stress.  One way to keep your mind focused is to keep thinking about all the variables that are happening around you during the hunt.  Anthony always has a pad and pencil to bounce information off of it with his hunting partner.  The paper helps clarify your thought process with the individual.

Mentally Prepared:  Is your wife happy, are your kids happy, is your j.o.b. going well?  It’s not just about your shot practicing.  You have to make a priority to be mentally prepared.  Something has to give during this time.  You might have to give up going to the bars at night.  Maybe you went to Crossfit the night you felt like not going.  It’s all about what you do, or choose to do that gets you mentally prepared.  One of Anthony’s number 1 thing he really watches for is that he doesn’t like taking untested gear into the field.  If you know the gear works, it’s ones less thing to think of while on the hunt.

Before the shot breathing tip that Anthony does:   There is no real good answer for this.  You just want to breathe.  If you hold your breath, all you are doing is creating a more anxiety moment to put your body thought.  What Anthony personally does is try to breathe and then exhale half a breath right at the moment you take the shot.   But timing is difficult.  It’s great to practice it, though it doesn’t always play out the way you are hoping.

Tips on preventing body fatigue: Anthony’s first thing he does is a lot of running in the off season.  That or any type of sports that are anaerobic is best.  There is a balance on trying to build muscle while training for a hunt because you are trying to build shot muscle memory during the off season and if you are lifting weights and shooting, the days you do both, your shot will not be as effective.  The best thing is to start leaning down rather than build heavy muscles.  That being said, it depends on your current body strength, because some people might need to bulk up to be able to pull back a bow with very solid form.

**Anthony test to see if you need bulk up:  If you can sit on your butt with your legs out in front of you; the target is at 12 o’clock and your abdominal area is facing 2 o’clock; and if you can draw the blow cleaning then you might not need to lift weights.  But if you can’t, you should start working out your back muscles and shoulders where they can handle that draw.

Another tip is to drink lots and lots of water.

In field body fatigue recovery methods to keep you at peek shape for the following days on your hunt:   Anthony eats full macronutrient meal in a form of tacos at night depending on if they base camp.  While on the stalk, Anthony packs protein in a form of nuts and some string cheese but he’s carful with that because cheese is a binder when dealing with bathroom situations.

Anthony shares his tips on how to keep from muscle lockups while glassing for hours.  Let’s say while one personal is in the group glassing, the rest should be behind him out of sight, either drinking water, doing jumping jacks, stretching, etc.  Basically doing some sort of motor movement activity to keep you loose. But know that it’s going to suck to just man up.

Now is not the time to get lazy and become a couch potato just because it’s off season.  This is the best time to prep for your the next season.  You might be thinking, “Can’t we just wait until we’re 30 days out and pack in some quick strength training to get prepared?”  Well no.. and we have just the guy to explain why.  We brought on Davie “Crockett” Ferraro who runs Hunt Strong for this episode just for that reason.  We talk with Davie about what to do now, during the off season so that you are always ready for the next hunt and boy he shreds some great advice… We hope you’ll really enjoy this episode.  We sure did.  : )

We go over many different areas within this episode.  In fact it might be a good time to state that this is a two part series.  This episode is all about off season.. well you read the title.  Our follow up episode is going to be just as good when we bring back Anthony Dixon to discuss what to do while on the hunt.

Let’s get to it.  Below are things Davie shares while on our show.  It’s all good stuff so enjoy.

Any good habit takes upwards to 21 to 30 days become a good habit.

The key is to try to lean down as much as possible and staying as strong as possible.

If you are going to do a high elevation hunt, there are some great tools out there to help train such as a high elevation training mask, weighted vest or loaded backpack, put your hands behind your back so you are not temped to use your hands and walk up and down the stars in the tallest building that you can find or have assess to.

Cool quote. “Why is it that the people who say they don’t have time to exercise always makes time to go out to eat.”

Staying fit during the off season really is the preparation or survival for the fittest during hunting season. Try visualizing the animal that you’re doing to hunt. The animal is already acclimated to the environment, you however need to train to be ready for it.

A lot of the training Davie does are functional workouts.   He also suggests mixing up the workouts – don’t do the same workout over and over again otherwise your body will adapt to it.

The two biggest failures Davie sees when preparing yourself during the off season:

1. The first thing is the inability to shot or perform under pressure and exhaustion.
   • A way to help is to factor in your shooting of the bow during your workouts.
   • Do your lunges, do your squats, grab your bow and shot.
   • Shoot from different angles.
   • Shoot from sitting down.
   • Shoot from your knees.
   • Shoot on one foot.
   • Shoot on an uneven fitness balance ball.
   • Practice like you have only one arrow to shoot and you have to make this shot.  Visualize what you are hunting.
2. The second is the lack of nutrition and lack of understand of what to eat.
   • This is very important during the off season as well as important while on the hunt.
   • The proper nutrition will help aid the muscles that will get you there to the end and afterwards.

We go over how important water is and the amount of water intake is needed for the best energy output. Without water you’ll be dehydrated, you won’t be thinking clearly, you’ll have a higher possibility to strain a muscle.  Water is very important.  A good round number is at least a gallon of water a day.  Water is key.

Davie is adamant about one ingredient foods.  Think of it as in a chicken breast is a chicken breast, sweet potato is a sweet potato and so on and so on which are all natural one ingredient foods. Another important nutrition is protein that you can carry at room temperature such as venison (not store bought but home made), nuts like raw almonds, raw pumpkin seed.  Things that are light that has some bite to it.

Davie talks about what are complex carbohydrates such as sweet potatoes, jasmine rise, brown rise, pastas, things like oatmeal and how important it is as a fuel base. Recap on things to carry are complex carbs, protein and good fats.

Find out your max heart rate so you can know what level you can train at: Take the number 220 minus your age to get your max heart rate.  Take that number and times it by 0.7 to 0.85.  That’ll give you what heart rate you should be training at for 45 minutes to an hour.

Hey guys, we are excited to be releasing our first addition to the Bowhunters Educational Training series that we’ll be publishing throughout the year.  We hope that these specific episode will be useful for any bow hunter no matter what experience level.

So today we brought back Anthony Dixon to share with us what we should be thinking about and what we should be asking a bow shop sales guy when buying a new bow.  Plus, we get into some of the basic bow shop terms that usually gets said and yet sometimes we forget what they mean.  This episode should allow you to be more engaged in the conversation at the archery shop which should give you a better experience overall.

 The 3 things to ask for when looking for a compound bow at a local archery shop.

1. I want a bow that has a smooth draw cycle with the highest let off.
2. I want a nice back wall.
3. I want the largest brace height  –  7 to 7 1/2.

** write those three things down and bring with you to a bow show and let the sale rep know thats what you are looking for.  This is hands down the best tip Anthony gave us for any new archer when choosing a bow.

General Terms that we talked about on the show.

Surprise Brake – is the best way to shoot a bow and what you are trying to achieve as you become a better archer.

Arrow – The arrow is the projectile that is shot from the bow.

Arrow Shelf – is located just above the grip and below the sight window.

Axle to Axle Measurement (ATA) – The axle to axle measurement of a bow is the distance (in inches) from center axle to center axle of the two cam. Try to keep this measurement within the manufacturers spec range which is most often within 3/16 of an inch of specified ATA.

Cable(s) –  The cables are tied into the bowstring and work with the cams during the draw process and execution of the shot.

Let Off – Let off is the % of the bow’s draw weight that is subtracted after reaching full draw. A good example would be a bow having a let-off of 80%.  This will require the shooter to only hold back 20% of the actual draw weight: 70 pound draw weight – 80% let off = 14 lb full draw holding weight.

Paper Tuning – is done by shooting an arrow into a piece of paper at a very close distance. This will reveal to the shooter how the arrow is behaving.

Riser – The riser is the long section of the bow which the limbs attach to and what you hold on to.

String Stop – These are attached along the riser or at the ends of the limbs, and extend back toward the bowstring.  Any excess vibration is quickly transferred from the string and soaked up by the stopper.

Nock – The nock is a plastic piece inserted into the rear of the arrow, that allows the arrow to be “nocked” onto the bow string.

Nocking Point – The nocking point is the location on the bowstring where the arrow attaches.

IBO Speed – is the initial velocity in feet per second.

Draw Weight – A bow’s draw weight is measured by the amount of force (in pounds) that is required to bring the bow to what we call “full draw”.

Cams – Cams are located at the end of each bow limb. The cams store energy and essentially transfer power from the limbs to the bowstring and to the arrow during the shot. Bow’s can have either one or two Cams.

Bow String –  is where the arrow is attached and the strings ends at the cams.

Back Tension – Back tension is a technique that involves using your back muscles to trigger the shot rather than simply pulling the trigger finger.

Jen shares on a few steps to consider before taking on a debate with an anti hunter.   When anti’s are pointing the finger at you during a stand off, we as hunters can sometimes get defensive instead of reflexive.  Remember, its not about you that they are angry about.  They could be acting on something that’s accruing.  They don’t like that this is going on… we are doing this… so how do we have a conversation now?

Jen loves teaching the youth in safety when using any type of weapon.  The more education the child has, the more they are able to handle the situation.

We get into the topic of reverse sexism as it seems that a lot of comments Jen gets are from women.  It seems that women outside the hunting industry are policing the women inside the hunting industry because huntresses don’t fit in the box.

We talk with Jen about her favorite type of bow hunting.

The Meaning of Pro Staff Is Finally Answered!

Jen shares great advice for new hunters which is to ask a ton of questions and sit on the information for a minute, then ask more from someone else and sit on that for awhile.   You’ll learn so much more by asking different people and seeing different points of view.

Jen is a certified archery instructor from USA Archer.

Jen shares a great insight on the difference between food politic ideals and hunters ideals.  If you really think about it, they’re kind of similar.  The biggest argument point that both sides seem to have is the term cruelty free and what it really means. It would help we hunters and non hunters become more educated and more conversations and stop being so reactive on both sides.

Jen shares her opinion in the differences between anti hunters and non hunters in this episode. You might be surprised at how similar they are.

Not every hunter knows what it’s like to get death threats just because you share with the public your passion for hunting. That being said, Jen has had it a little harder these last few months.  Jen shares on some of the struggles she’s dealing with on the show.

• Make sure you always wear your safety harness.  *He gives you a good reason why in this episode.
• Make sure to know your hunting property or home property rules and regulations if you plan to hunt it as that just might save you from a lot of headache later on.

• Don’t let anything stop you from doing what you want to do.  If something happens to your stand, hunt the ground.  If the weather is bad, get out in the woods anyways, because that could be the day you get your biggest buck.  If you are not in the woods, you’ll never know if that day was the day or not.

Simple…. Proof!
But that doesn’t mean the photos have to look like crap.  That’s why we brought on Shane Durrance to give us some much needed tips on getting those awesome photos to help tell the story to your buddies.  It’s not just point and shoot – look at the camera and smile – anymore.  We’re media driven nuts posting on Instagram, Facebook and all other types of social sites just to get our 15 minutes of fame (so-to-speak).

Photos Tips from Shane:

• Don’t straddle your buck when taking success photos, get behind it and raise the head up high which will make the animal more impressive.
• Take shots looking at the animal instead of just looking at the camera.
• Buy the iPhone extra lenses for about $60.00 which will give you a zoom and or wide-angle shots.
• Shane gives his top tip when using an iPhone and Costa’s sunglasses.
• Make sure there aren’t any forward ground or background objects in view.  Plus you don’t have to take photos where you found the game animal laying, drag them to an area that looks more presentable for a photo.  Try to pick an area where there is completely open shade to help cut down on specular lights.

We had a great time speaking with Anthony Dixon about long distance shooting.  Anthony is someone we believe helped pave the road for other hunters to accept that it’s ok to shoot long distance at an animal as long as you know your capabilities.

Fun fact to know when choosing the right broadhead for long distance shooting:
Fixed broadheads will shoot very well up to 50 yards, but the separation will start once you leave 50 yards reaching past 70, 80, 90, 120 plus.  Fixed broadheads leave you zero room for mistakes while a mechanical broadhead can be more forgiving.

Tips to improve your shooting while having fun.
Anthony has always believed that you should climb higher than the average tree stand hunter and place shots that are more challenging.  If the average tree stand is around 18 feet off the ground, then climb 20 to 25 feet off the ground.   This will help you learn more about your capabilities.  Plus deer are used to seeing huntings at around the same height so if you’re higher than normal, they might not even notice you.   Over time, you’ll start to learn your ark and the projectory that the arrow will fly when challenging yourself on what you and your bow is capable of performing.   This is great stuff, but you can’t learn that unless you start coming up with cool shots – per Anthony.

Always shoot at the distance you’re comfortable with. If you are only comfortable  in shooing at 35 yards then shoot at 35 yards but push your self in the off season by practice at longer distances and harder shot placements.  This will only improve your confidence in the 35 yard shots at that you take when it counts.

Today we brought on Phil Mendoza from No Limits Archery, who happens to be heavily involved in Train to Hunt and the archery challenges they have created.  Phil shares on what it takes to win the Train to Hunt archery challenges and sure enough, being fit is one of those things.  This is a perfect subject to cover with Phil as we dive in to training tips to help get you physically prepared to pack out your game meat.  Since Phil owns an archery shop, we asked him his personal opinion on what a new archer needs to know when looking to buy your first bow.  This episode of The BowRush Podcast is full of great advice.  Enjoy!

Training Tips:

• When practice shooting, after you’ve shot a few times and are going to retrieve your arrows from the target, do lunges between your shooting distance and the target. You’ll feel a difference in your legs and knees afterwards.
• Take stairs when you can, off season and wear your pack while walking up and down stairs.
• Plan out your workout routine months beforehand and write down your process so that you can see what needs more attention before an archery event or hunting adventure.

Safety Backpack Tips:

• When packing out your game meat using a backpack, a good way to get up would be to role over and do a pushup while standing instead of lifting the pack up using your back.
• Have a proper backpack with most of the weight on your waist belt rather than your shoulders.
• Make sure it fits and comfort is key, because of your torso length as not everyone is built the same.
• Prefers the Kifaru Duplex Frame Packs.

 Basic Knowledge for Beginners Trying to Get into Bow Hunting:

• Always try to go to a pro shop first before a box store!
• Take time to hang out at the pro shop and listen in on other people’s conversations about archery.

If you take your meat to the processor, here are some tips that will help you get the best out of your meat.

• Shot placement is key
• If you’re field dressing beforehand, ice down the animal as soon as you can.  This helps stop the blood flow.
• Bring ice bags and put in chest cavity to help drop down the temperature of the meat.

Tips on killing the gamy flavor:

• You can use any kind of acidity
• Orange juice
• Buttermilk
• Pineapple juice
• Marinade * Terry uses water, 1 tbsp of salt, 1/3 cup of vinegar and let sit overnight, drain and wash before eating.

Things you’ll need to start processing your own meat:

• Refrigerator or cooler and allows the meat to age 5 to 10 days.  This helps the meat to tender and for the blood to drain out.
• Pan to catch the blood
• Cuber Saw for cubed meat
• Table
• A good Fillet knife
• Butcher gloves – his helps keep you keep all of your fingers
• Grinder to grind the meat.  The $120 ones work just as good as the commercialized ones.
  • For ground, you’ll need fat (about 0.10% of fat for 1 lbs of meat), usually you can ask the butcher at your local grocery store for pork fat.
• Vacuum seal to help preserve the meat

We had Monte Perron on as as a guest to talk about hunting public land in the eastern states.  Monte is very good at sharing wisdom through the art of stories and though we were talking more about hunting public land in the eastern states, a lot of his advice could be used anywhere.  There was a great point he mentioned throughout the podcast which is that your attitude is the key to a successful hunt.  You can’t always control the weather, the environment and or the people around you, but as long as you have a positive attitude, at least your time hunting in the public land will be a more enjoyable one.

Brief Show Notes:

– Evan was very adamant in having a colored touch screen GPS devices when hunting public land out west.  Look for ones that show full state unit so that you can see where the public land area are and private which could help prevent trespassing on land you are not allowed on.

– Some western states have made it illegal to hunt with any type of electronics so make sure to find out beforehand what the regulations are for that state you’re hunting.

– Toxic broadheads are illegal to hunt with in Colorado.
