Talking Taxes

Privatize PA

As state government runs a multi-billion dollar deficit, it is a good time for governments to shed themselves of non-core government functions.

This week, Matt will look at opportunities for Pennsylvania to privatize certain activities that would be better served by the private sector, including our state liquor stores, public television and radio, professional sports, and human services.

Education Funding & Fallacies

If you only listened to the public school establishment, you would believe that the Senate Republicans are throwing school children out of their air-conditioned, high-tech classrooms and on to dirt floors and dusty chalk blackboards. This week, Matt will address how our government-run education system fares in the current budget debate. Senate Education Committee Chairman Jeff Piccola will talk about public education funding, as well as his plans for higher education reform. Matt will also chat with folks about the impact of the budget on parental choices through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit and cyber charter schools.

The Senate Budget

Despite a projected revenue shortfall approaching $3 billion, Governor Rendell wants to increase spending in the coming fiscal year. But the Senate Republicans countered the governor’s proposal with a reduced spending plan that passed on May 6 by a 30-20 party-line vote.

This week, Matt will discuss the ramifications of this line drawn in the sand with Senate Appropriations Chairman Jake Corman and Dave Taylor of the PA Manufacturers Association. Joe Sterns of the Commonwealth Foundation will also talk about the importance and need for the Taxpayer Protection Act/Amendment.
