Brick Room regular, Gordy, is back for this episode that was, admittedly, recorded some time ago.  Forgive us.  Our hectic lives interrupted our regular recording and posting schedule, but we are correcting that and you can count on regular content from The Brick Room moving forward.

Of course, after this discussion we move to talk about 3D printing and how 3D printers can be used to help commit crime.  3D printers are the crime tool of the future.  We think so because one day people will be able to print a gun in their home.  No more buying illegal firearms from the trunk of a car if you’re a bad dude looking to commit crime.  You’ll be able to do it from the comfort of your own home.  We suppose 3D printers will also be able to print other stuff but we just like talking about guns.

Grab your drink and listen in.  You might learn a think or two about how to be an efficient salesman (or an efficient criminal).

When is food fast food and when is it not?  This is an important matter and we solve the mystery today.  We also talk about vegans.

Then we switch topics and talk about getting fat and being fat.  Why is it that things that are good for us aren’t automatically appealing, but things that are bad for us are very appealing.  Drinking booze, eating sugar, and eating fast food are all very attractive in some way, but not good for our bodies.  Whereas getting plenty of sleep and exercise and eating right is undeniably good, but not always the most attractive option.  Is there any answer?  Of course, just eat right and exercise.  It’s so hard to do though…  Listen in as we face our demons (while drinking beer).

We also discuss movie deaths.  What happens if your character gets shot in a  movie?  Does it make a difference if you are shot with a bullet vs an arrow?  As it turns out, it does.  If you could choose between being shot with a bullet or an arrow in a movie universe which one would you pick?  You should choose to be shot by the bullet.  I know, it sounds like being shot by a gun would be worse than being shot by a bow and arrow but trust me, if you are a character in a movie you do not want to be shot with an arrow.  We talk all about it and explain why that is in this week’s podcast.  Grab your drink, avoid the bows and arrows, and listen in.

We’re back this week with a very international Brick Room! We’ve got Olympic fever and not the kind that you’ll get while swimming in Rio.

We did some research this week for once, fell for click bait, and discussed the status of competing in such a seemingly dangerous place with toxic water and gun play.

We talk about the peak of human achievement as well as find ways to fix the Olympics by adding, combining and improving events because it’s what we do here at The Brick Room.

Since the recording, however, it has come to light that Ryan Lochte wasn’t dumb for talking back to an armed robber but rather for reporting a false crime while being a public figure at an event that is watched by, literally, people all over the world.

Also, what the hell is up with all of this flooding?

How can that be, you ask, since there are 3 match-ups yet to go?  Well, we’re crossing the finish line with strong by doing all three contests in one episode today.

Last week’s guest in the Brick Room, Chris Daily, helped us to determine that Ripley was more badass then Apone, which leaves our bracket looking like this:

Today, we finish up the bracket by deciding the winner between Furiosa and Max as well as Ripley and Vasquez.  Trust me when I say that these match ups were not easy to figure out. Then, we take the final two contestants and determine, once and for all, who is the most badass character ever to appear in an action movie.  The final match was tough to figure out as well but, ultimately, we’re both pretty happy with the result.

We also wonder…has anyone ever made a good movie based off of a video game?  People have certainly tried and they are continuing to try, but has anyone ever pulled it off?  We think not.  We explain why we think no one has succeeded yet and what it would take for someone to actually make a good movie based off a video game.

As for The Bracket of Badassery, fear not.  The Bracket will return in a couple weeks when we begin Round 2 and continue our journey to find out who is the most badass character from all of action movies.  As for Round 1, our last competition in that round was Private Vasquez, from Aliens, facing off against the Predator himself, from Predator.  Who was the victor?

Private Vasquez was the victor in a contest that started close but ultimately went decisively for the young Colonial Marine.

The remaining match ups are sure to be interesting so be sure to keep listening.  But, we’ll get to that later.  For now, let’s talk about virtual reality and video game movies.

The victor was Sgt. Apone and to be honest, it wasn’t even close.  But that was last week and now it’s time to see one last match up before we move on to Round 2.  Grab your beer and let’s see how it turns out!

Ellen Ripley was the victor.  Not to take anything away from her win, but that was a close match and Carl Weathers has nothing to be ashamed about.

This week we find yet another match-up between the Aliens and Predator movie franchises.  Sgt. Apone, from Aliens, faces off against Mac, from Predator.  These two dudes are both totally badass, but only one can be the most badass.  Who will it be?  Grab your beer and listen in to find out.

Well, we finally saw it.  We watched the movie with our good friend, Gordy, and then invited him onto the podcast to talk about the film.  We’ve done this before and you might enjoy listening to some of our previous podcasts where we’ve talked about movies with Gordy (episode #63, 73, and 95 are when we talked about Jupiter Ascending, Jurassic World, and Star Wars, The Force Awakens).

Today, we talk all about Batman vs. Superman so be forewarned, **SPOILERS** abound in this episode of The Brick Room.  Was the movie any good?  Grab your beer, listen in, and find out.

Mad Max defeated Billie in a very close match.  This week, we find Ellen Ripley, from Aliens, competing with Carl Weathers, from Predator, to find out which one of them is the most badass.  It’s another great contest.  Get some popcorn and settle in for a good match.

This week we find Billie, from Predator, vs Max Rockatansky, from Mad Max:  Fury Road.  This turns out to be a very interesting match up, as well.  Considering how little thought we put into seeding this bracket we’re pretty happy with the level of competition we’ve been seeing so far.  Let the contest begin!

This week we have two contests.  We recorded an entire podcast for the match between Imperator Furiosa and Sarah Connor but, unfortunately, we had a technical issue with our audio recorder and that whole episode was lost.  That was a real bummer to us because we really enjoyed talking about those two characters and trying to figure out which one was the more badass.  It was a difficult decision.  At the start of this episode, we take just a couple minutes to summarize some of what we talked about in the lost episode and declare the winner.  Then we get on to this weeks real match up:  Maj. Alan “Dutch” Schaefer vs. Terminator from Terminator 2.  This is a very interesting match up as well and we think you’ll enjoy the discussion.  As always, let us know in the comments what you think about the contest.  Who should win this weeks match up?  Let the games begin!

The Oscars happened.  We didn’t really watch them, it was on in the bar but the sound was off so we couldn’t hear anything.  So, we kind of know what happened.  More importantly, we know who should be getting Oscars for stuff.  We lead off this week’s Brick Room podcast with a discussion of who got some of this year’s Oscars and who should be getting Oscars.

This leads us to a discussion of action movies because one of the greatest action movies ever made hit the screen this year and that was Mad Max:  Fury Road.  We quickly, and unscientifically, determine what the five greatest action movies are of all time.  As we discuss these movies and the characters that are in them we start to wonder:  who is the most badass character to appear in an action movie?  In no time at all we develop a bracket to help answer this import question.

Over the next several weeks, we’ll figure out who wins each bracket position until we know who the most badass movie character is of all time.  Of course, this won’t be the discussion for the whole episode.  We’ll figure out who wins in their match and then move on to discussing the podcast topic of the week.

In this episode, we have match number one from the first round of competition which places Detective John McClane, from Die Hard, up against Corporal Dwayne Hicks, from Aliens.  As expected, this is a good competition.  We announce the winner near the end of the episode.

This week we find out because special guest Chris Daily is back in the Brick Room and Chris is a big fan of superheroes and comics in general.  In fact, Chris is an artist who currently does storyboards and has made comics in the past.  You can find links to his work below the audio.

We play a game this week where Chris tells us the name of a superhero and then we try to guess what that superhero’s power is, or whether or not Chris made up that hero and they don’t really exist.  We had a lot of fun playing this game and we think you’ll find it entertaining.  Grab your drink and play the game along with us.

We hit 100 episodes!  We’re pretty excited about this accomplishment.  We both really enjoy doing the podcast and we want to thank all of you who listen and who have given us such great and supportive feedback.

We’re celebrating today by having a special guest on the podcast:  Chris Daily.  Chris is an improviser who performs with us at National Comedy Theatre, which is where we all met. Chris is also a very talented artist who does storyboards, caricatures, and all kinds of other stuff.  Most importantly, he’s just a cool guy.

Today we start off by talking about the effects alcohol can have on the human brain.  We know it isn’t smart to drink and drive, but are there any skills that improve as you drink?  Everyone has had the experience of having a few drinks and becoming amazing at playing darts or pool in the bar.  What other skills does this apply too?  Do you get better or worse at doing the dishes at home as you drink?  What about judging the quality of a TV show or movie?  We think an experiment is in order.

Talking about drinking of course leads us to talking about Las Vegas.  We discuss the nature of objects in Vegas and how they are all huge and oddly shaped.  We also talk about what it means for a place to be a “vacation spot”.  We all live in San Diego which doesn’t feel like a vacation spot to us because we live here.  People who live in Vegas probably feel the same way.  We suppose, a vacation spot is pretty much any place that isn’t where you live.

Finally, we finish up this week by talking about Star Trek.  You read that right:  not Star Wars, Star Trek.  We’re mixing it up this time.  Which scifi universe has cooler technology?  When it comes to holograms, the Star Trek folks have the Star Wars folks beat.

In this week’s episode we get kind of deep again.  We start kind of light talking about the upcoming Batman vs. Superman movie and we give our prediction of what we think the movie will be like.  Heads up:  it isn’t going to be a good movie.  That’s when the podcast takes a turn and we go deep.

We talk about what makes someone who they are.  Are you the accumulation of all your experiences and memories?  If that’s true, what would happen if you lost your memory?  What if you had amnesia, Jason Bourne style, and retained all your motor skills but just couldn’t remember your past?  Would that affect who you are as a person?  Maybe you would no longer want to be friends with people you are friends with now.  Maybe you would feel differently about things in life that you really hate or really love.  What would happen to your moral compass?  Is it possible that someone who previously thought murder was ok would change their mind?  What about the reverse of that question?

This leads us to the idea:  if it’s possible to change who you are by altering your memories, then maybe who you are is actually a combination of two or three different people.  There is the “you” who is molded by experience and the “you” that is running on the basic hardware that is your brain.  Maybe all of us are kind of two different people observing each other in the same mind, mashed together into one entity?

We end up going down a couple different rabbit holes in this episode and we think it’s pretty interesting.  Of course, neither of us is a philosopher or neurosurgeon so maybe we’re just full of shit and talking out of our ass.  That never stopped us from broadcasting before!  Give us a listen and then weigh in with your opinion in the comments section.  See you next week for the big ONE HUNDRED!

This week we talk about movies, specifically Star Trek (woah, bizarro-cast!) and movie themes! We kinda get into the horrors of the transporter and why away teams are always Kirk, Bones, other officers and some killable dudes.

We go into the potential shared universes of different filmmakers and explore why we think so. And then we gripe about the way movie theaters suck, like a pair of old men…

We also talk about Christopher Nolan movies where we bring up David Bowie and The Prestige. We recorded this on the 10th and had not yet read of Bowie’s passing. We make the joke about he play’s a younger version of himself in The Prestige and lament that we would want to watch him in more films. That feeling hasn’t changed since the recording.

I forgot my ‘cans’ and had difficulty judging sound and we discussed the difficulty and horrors of being born on a leap year and how to embrace this tragedy.

We moved on to the differences of the perception of time between children and adults which caused us to discuss the awesomeness of toys and the incredible depths of the imagination of a kid.

Then we go off the deep end, talking about people’s brains and stuff!

This, of course, led to Lego and thus, Star Wars…

Whatever, no wrong answers!

James Cameron’s movie, The Terminator, is one of the best ever.  But there’s a problem:  the movie involves time travel and as the film’s course of events unfolds we learn that the entire plot hinges around a paradox.  It isn’t actually possible for the story to have happened as presented to the viewer.  Or is it?  Marc has a theory about how the story of the terminator movies can actually make sense, without creating a paradox.

This is one of our favorite conversations and we know you’ll like it too if you missed it the first time around.  Grab your favorite holiday beverage and listen in.  As for us…<imagine Terminator theme here> …we’ll be back.  (I had to do it).

In this episode we welcome back Gordy, who has been on the podcast a number of times before.  We start off talking about what Gordy would do if he became a ghost.  By the way, Gordy wants to be a ghost.  Then we move on to discuss who our characters would be if we were put into a suspense movie.  Would we be the killers?  The victims?

We also discuss the current state of television.  Specifically, we talk about how the best TV you can watch right now isn’t coming from major TV studios.  Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, HBO, Showtime…they’re the leaders right now in terms of quality.  So that’s two online streaming services, a mail order delivery service/warehouse, and two cable channels making original content far superior to what you can find on NBC, ABC, or any other major network.  HBO and Showtime have always had strong original content,  but now Amazon and Netflix are leading the pack as well?  Incredible.  Good TV is no longer made by TV.

Finally, we wrap it up by making guesses about the future of the movie business.  For awhile, every movie had vampires.  Then they all had zombies.  Now everything is a superhero movie.  What will the next trend be?  Grab your drink, give us a listen, and find out the future of movies.  And speaking of movies…go watch Star Wars and then come back and listen to our Star Wars:  The Force Awakens review podcast.

We also discuss a game called DayZ and the ways in which its intense realism has resulted in one of the most interesting experiments in human behavior and human psychology ever.  How do people behave when they are anonymous?  When there are no consequences?  When they can basically do anything they want and have power over other people?  Join us as we discuss the dark side of human nature and learn just how awful everyone will really be in the event of a societal collapse.

How much money do the casinos in Las Vegas make in one year?  We know it’s a lot of money.  What could all the casinos in Vegas buy with one years worth of profits?  Could they build a space station?  Could they fund NASA?  Cure a disease?  Marc went to Vegas for his birthday and his experience in that city got us wondering about these questions and others.  For this week’s Brick Room we both came up with a list of things that were really expensive that we thought Vegas might be able to buy outright or buy in a few years.  Then, during the podcast, we looked up the yearly profits for the casinos in Vegas and compared that number with our research.  So, what could Las Vegas buy with a years worth of profits?  Grab your drink, listen in, and find out.

The Trojan Horse might be the most famous deception in all of history.  It’s so famous that the words ‘Trojan Horse’ are a modern day description for anything that is used to sneak past security or get into a place it shouldn’t be.  Everything from computer viruses to sports plays reference that one time an advanced civilization with the most impenetrable walls ever know to man got its ass handed to it by some clever warriors with some extra wood and some free time.  We discuss the Trojan Horse and the Trojans themselves in this historically based episode of The Brick Room.  We also discuss how the term Trojan Horse is used in our modern culture and how we, as a people, think of this interesting story from the past.  Finally, we discuss how this tactic, and others similar to it, could be used in modern warfare.  Sometimes the old ways are best.  Is there a reason someone couldn’t use a Trojan Horse in a modern military scenario?  Listen in and find out.

Speaking of food.  This week we talk about the horrible food we ate as kids.  Basically, our diets consisted mostly of sugar.  Sometimes that sugar was flavored.  Sometimes it was wrapped in other sugar.  It’s amazing we survived.  We also talk about how doctors and scientists can’t make up their minds about what’s good for you.  Don’t eat eggs.  No, just kidding, eat eggs.  Just don’t eat fat.  Actually, you need some fat, so eat it.  Make up your mind, doctors.

Finally, we talk about advertising.  Basically it comes down to this:  there are some commercials that are so bad it guarantees that we will never, ever buy the product they are advertising.  Also, we come up with our own line of truly awesome toys for girls.  We call it our Natasha Romanoff line of toys.  If you are a little girl, especially if you have an older brother, you will want these toys.  They’ll be on sale in our Etsy store soon.  And, since everything eventually comes back to Star Wars we talk about how Princess Leia is a lot cooler than, and tougher, then many people give her credit for.  Grab your drinks, Brick Room Listeners.  Go football!

Hello, everyone!  We hope you enjoyed your Labor Day weekend.  We did and now we’re back with all new content.  In this week’s podcast we talk about ‘flow’.  Flow is a term some people use to describe the focused mental state people will go into when they are performing a task at their optimal level.  You’ve probably experienced this.  Maybe you were writing something, or building something or playing a sport and time seemed to fly by in the blink of an eye.  You completely lost yourself in the activity.  Not only did time fly by but while you were doing whatever it was you were doing you were completely present in the moment, focused on your surroundings, and everything seemed easy.  Athletes seek to find this mental state when they play their sport.  We wonder, can drinking help you to achieve this state of intense awareness and focus?

Next we talk about the Terminator, and here’s the thing:  the Terminator isn’t evil.  It’s just following its programming.  It’s a machine.  The humans in the Terminator movies, however, are dicks.  We also talk about Michael Biehn and how much we are fans of his.  Michael, we love you.

Finally, we wrap things up by talking about sequels and prequels that don’t need to be made.  As much as we looked forward to Promethius we both agree that the franchise didn’t need that movie.  Similarly, Blade Runner, Top Gun, and Independence Day don’t need sequels either.  Perhaps we’ll have to start writing more movies and save Hollywood from their age old nemesis:  rehashing shit.  Grab your drink, listen to the show, and then tell your friends about us.  Thanks for listening.

Have you ever tried online dating?  There’s a lot to do if you decide to venture into these digital waters.  You have a profile to maintain.  You have to check your account often to see if you have any messages.  You have to send messages out to other people.  It can be a lot of work.  Of course, some apps and websites try to help you manage the amount of work you need to do by pairing you up with potential matches that you will have a high probability of liking.  Each service has its own way of figuring this out.  Some websites make you fill out long quizzes, others just match you with people who happen to be nearby.  Today, in the Brick Room, we discuss the online dating scene and also spend a little bit of time looking at some specific websites.  As it turns out, there are some dating websites that cater to very specific needs and desires.  Did you know there is a dating site for farmers looking for farmers?  Or a site where you can look for someone at the airport?  There’s a lot of choice out there.  Which website is best for you?  Grab beer, take a listen, and find out.  We might just fix your love life.

Is the Sitcom going away?  What do you think, Brick Room Listeners.  It seems like the multi-camera sitcom shot in front of a live audience and featuring a laugh track may finally be going extinct.  We’re pretty happy about that, despite the fact that we’ve enjoyed some sitcoms in the past.  We believe TV has evolved beyond the level of the traditional sitcom.  What else is evolving in the realm of TV?  Well, virtual reality is coming.  One day, you’ll sit on your sofa with a pair of VR goggles on your face and experience your favorite TV show or video game as if you were actually there.  We talk about both of these issues on today’s podcast, as well as the impact “nerd” or “geek” culture has had on pop culture at large.  And what is a nerd these days anyway?  What does that word mean?  Finally, we finish up by talking about the use of CGI blood in movies, as opposed to squibs and blood packs.  If you’ve heard our podcast before, you can probably guess our feeling on using CGI blood as opposed to practical effects in movies and TV.  We want the real fake blood.  Tune in, then share your opinions in the comments, we’d love to hear from you.

We’re back and today we’re talking about space tourism and space advertising.  We’re both looking forward to the day when space tourism becomes an affordable thing.  We’re not looking forward to the day when space is filled with advertisements and billboards.  Some amount of space advertising is already allowed and taking place.  A company could buy space to advertise on the side of a rocket, for instance.  Some space advertising is outlawed.  You can’t put a big billboard on the moon that’s visible from Earth.  We discuss our thoughts on space advertising today.

Then we discuss what we think are the coolest vehicles that have ever appeared in movies.  What’s the coolest car?  What’s the coolest spaceship?  The coolest airplane?

We also have a great discussion about James Cameron and Christopher Nolan (two people responsible for some of the coolest things seen in pop culture) as well as Batman and his moral code.

This week’s podcast is all about cash money.  Marc and Chris start off talking about radio voices, then quickly get into a discussion about money and how much space it takes up.  How much would a million dollars weigh?  If you robbed a bank how many bags would you need to carry a million dollars?  Two million dollars?  The guys also talk about currency in coin form. Would it be better if our one and five dollar pieces were coins instead of bills?  Marc and Chris also come to the conclusion that the US Treasury should reintroduce the 500 dollar bill.  Finally, the discussion turns to Star Wars because in the end, everything is always about Star Wars.  The guys talk about Republic Credits and paying your way in a galaxy far, far away,
