Apparently, Australia had gun-toting outlaws, too. Aido Kessler has built a LEGO replica of Ned Kelly, an Australian outlaw who roamed the Land Down Under almost 150 years ago. He was known for wearing a suit of bulletproof armor with an iconic helmet. What is neat about this is it was the official convention model at Brickvention this past weekend. So, if you were there, it is possible that you could have also gotten -uh-your cold, dead hands on this hot exclusive model. Aido tells us it’s very odd seeing your creation on the front of a box, an experience not many of us can boast. He must be having the best week ever as we have recently featured another of his creations. Check it out as well as many of his other amazing works in our Aido Kessler archives.

We see a lot of enormous collaborative LEGO dioramas here on TBB, albeit often through the individual modules that make them up. At first glance, this serene windmill scene by Sandro Damiano might seem like one such module. There are some conspicuous holes to connect to other parts of the diorama, and after all, it is referred to as “Module #2”. But the only person Sandro is collaborating with on this particular project is… Himself! He has taken on the construction of an entire medieval village. This section is already pretty big, so this could end up being very impressive once finished!

Not only that – if the other modules are as well-built as this one (and with Sandro’s skill, there’s no reason to doubt they will be), it could be pretty stunning too. Take a look at the river flowing over the weir here, for instance. Using trans-light-blue cockpit is the perfect way to capture the movement of the water! We can’t wait to see more, Sandro…

As an avid fan of LEGO microscale, I adore this Lilliputian Liebherr by builder EMazingBrix. As we’ve seen with other models made for the ongoing Iron Forge competition, this scene utilizes so many cups and vessels in its makeup. A series of yellow mugs comprise the dozer’s wheels, from front idler to sprocket. An upside-down goblet forms the earthmover’s exhaust, and a pair of teacups form hardhats for the compact construction workers. And with so many atypical (and highly illegal) connections between parts, this scene bears all the hallmarks of inventive microscale.

In the realms of fantasy, it seems like there’s always a horde of orcs taking on a band of elves somewhere. And in this Tolkien-inspired LEGO scene by Graham Gidman, these two groups are at it once again. But this time the battle appears to be more fluid than normal, and I mean that literally! There’s a rush of trans-clear bricks about to knock those orcs right off the bridge. But the shaping of this “water” is only one part of Graham’s brick-built mastery on display in this scene. The smooth white curves of the Elvish architecture feel perfectly at home here, projecting a regal tone. And every bit of plant life dotting the rocky landscape is inspired. But my favorite detail in the whole scene has got to be the darker shade of tan used on the waterlogged portion of the bridge. It’s quite the excellent, and easy-to-miss, detail that sets this build apart!

LEGO has been no stranger to brand tie-ins of late, and they have added another popular TV character to their line-up. The Danish company is teaming up with Hasbro Entertainment to produce DUPLO sets featuring Peppa Pig and her friends. Peppa has been a mainstay of children’s TV for 20 years as of 2024, and the collaboration will see sets released in the Duplo line aimed at toddlers and pre-schoolers. Merlin Entertainment, custodian of the LEGOLAND parks, is also being brought into the fold. In LEGO’s hometown of Billund, the LEGOLAND park will get its own Duplo Peppa Pig play area. Meanwhile, LEGOLAND Deustchland in Gunzburg, Germany, will get a new neighbour in the form of a Peppa Pig-dedicated theme park. More details on the sets are slated to come later on this year.

Here is the press release from LEGO:

Billund, January 23rd, 2024: A delightfully unexpected mashup of companies founded in fun and play is now revealed between the LEGO Group, Hasbro and Merlin Entertainments, who are coming together to bring a truly joyful and beloved character to life in LEGO® DUPLO® form – PEPPA PIG!
Just in time for PEPPA PIG’s 20th anniversary, the companies are celebrating everyone’s favorite piggy with new experiences for toddlers. With a shared commitment to create and deliver great play experiences to children all around the world, the three brands will introduce new ways for preschoolers to engage with the much adored and globally celebrated PEPPA PIG character, known for her little snorts, giggles and love of jumping in muddy puddles.
“PEPPA PIG is hugely popular and LEGO fans have been asking us to do a partnership for years, it was only natural that the world’s most popular pig needed to come to life in buildable LEGO sets, so we are excited to finally make that happen with the amazing team at Hasbro,” says Roberta Cardazzo, Design Manager at the LEGO Group.
“Peppa is known for her confidence, ability to express herself and adopt new skills. She handles everyday tasks and obstacles with curiosity and charm and inspires children to be patient and learn to share. Toddlers can be creative with the Peppa sets and play out stories with the iconic figures, while they learn about caring for nature, friendship, and daily routines. It has been a joy bringing Peppa to life in products and we hope our LEGO DUPLO PEPPA PIG will create laughs and joyful moments wherever she goes.”
The exciting collaboration will see PEPPA PIG come to life in LEGO DUPLO form for the very first time in LEGO products, as well as incredible attractions and rides in Merlin theme parks. The first experiences will launch this year in Germany and Denmark, including the world’s only LEGO DUPLO PEPPA PIG area at LEGOLAND® Billund and the brand-new PEPPA PIG Park in Gunzburg in Germany, situated next to LEGOLAND® Deutschland Park. The theme park experiences will bring to life the LEGO DUPLO PEPPA PIG sets, iconic scenes, and characters from the TV show in real-life PEPPA adventures.
“For 20 years, PEPPA PIG has leaned into storytelling that reflects the real lives and first experiences of preschoolers around the world. With kids at the center of the brand, we recognize the importance of working with best-in-class partners to deliver toys and experiences tailored to her littlest fans,” said Casey Collins, President of Licensed Consumer Products at Hasbro. “LEGO Group and Merlin share in Hasbro and PEPPA’s goal of designing play experiences specifically for little ones, giving children the confidence to treat every first step as a new adventure and confidently jump into all of life’s muddy puddles.”
Since the beloved animated television series first premiered in 2004, PEPPA PIG has encouraged kids to jump in together and explore the world around them. With their best friend Peppa by their side, preschoolers have the confidence to treat every first step as a new adventure – from the everyday to the epic. Now in its 10th season, the PEPPA PIG animated television series has been running for 20 years in over 180 territories. Globally successful, the brand connects with consumers across every touchpoint, from entertainment and retail to theme parks, touring shows and so much more.
Scott O’Neil, CEO Merlin Entertainments, said: “This is an exciting step forward for two of our iconic partners, whose purpose is to entertain and educate through creativity and play. We’ve partnered with the LEGO Group for over 18 years and the power of the brand, across borders and ages, is unparalleled. We’re really proud to bring Hasbro’s PEPPA PIG to life with the DUPLO brand, beginning with our new PEPPA PIG Theme Park in Gunzberg and our LEGOLAND Billund Resort, as our guests make life-long memories and learn through play.”
Stay tuned for the full reveal of LEGO DUPLO PEPPA PIG products coming soon: www.LEGO.com/duplo or find inspiration and play tips here: www.LEGO.com

News Contributor

A large part of the LEGO scene is to be able to keep our global audience updated with the latest breaking news. If you have a good sense of the LEGO community, a knack for discovering sources of information and connecting with individuals, you may just be the person we’re looking for.

We’re looking for an individual with the following background and skillset:

Ability to maintain high confidentiality and discretion for embargoed news and other information you may learn through non-disclosure agreements between TBB and its partners, including the world’s largest toy manufacturer.

Ability to cover breaking news with website posts, as well as plan out news articles where we have great lead time. This means the weekly time commitment can fluctuate from week to week, but on average amounts to about 3-4 hours per week. More availability could produce even stronger results.

Existing access to graphic design software required

On average, this role requires availability of a couple of hours a week.

TBB team roles are unpaid — The Brothers Brick is run by a bunch of passionate volunteers who write about LEGO in their spare time. All money the site earns through the support of our loyal readers goes toward server and bandwidth costs, purchasing products to review, ensuring timely news coverage of important events, sponsoring contests and fan events like BrickCon and Japan Brickfest, and helping out the LEGO fan community wherever we can.

Even though all roles are volunteer positions, being a TBB Contributor provides a genuine opportunity to participate in one of the top hobby sites in the world. If you don’t have prior web writing experience, you’ll have the opportunity to learn or improve on tangible professional skills such as writing for the web, headline writing, search engine optimization, editing, and graphic design. More than one TBB “alumni” has successfully referenced experience earned through contributing as a team member during professional job interviews with well-known international companies.

To apply for any of the roles, please use our standard contributor application form and indicate which role you’re interested in.

It’s not too often that the LEGO bricks line up in a way that we can do a theme day here at TBB. But when two great builders push the limits on a certain hard-to-use part, it’s tough not to write them up together. We already saw Nate’s spaceship earlier today, and now we’re treated to this delightful gnome-built cottage by Maxx Davidson, both built around this human-sized LEGO mug. Fitting with the Iron Forge challenge to use as many LEGO liquid containers as possible, the creation also features mug-turbaned gnomes with Minecraft Shulker faces, and some lovely window awnings made from latte cups.

What does it take to succeed in the Iron Forge? Well, I don’t exactly have any experience to draw on, but you can be sure that a bit of ingenuity and outside-the-box thinking will go a long way. Exhibit A: Nate Chiles‘ latest effort. In this early phase of the contest, the seed parts are not always as prescriptive as in the Iron Builder finals, so the ongoing second round challenges builders to use any LEGO piece tagged as a cup or goblet. And that does technically include the actual LEGO mug that forms the engine of this spaceship. Or at least, we’re assuming that’s what’s going on here. The alternative explanation is that this is a standard minifigure mug, and Nate has a shrink ray. Are they even allowed in this competition? Can we get a ruling on this please?!

Even if your aim’s so terrible that you can’t hit the broadside of a barn, you can certainly use one to hide, as we see in this LEGO vignette by Mihał Ch (BardJaskier). With an army dressed similarly to the 10297 Boutique Hotel staff hiding in the foreground, my attention is drawn to the <del>expect</del> expert techniques used in the granary. Brown brick-built doors look sturdy as can be and the foundation is appropriately cobbled. But it’s those thick black lines framing the structure that really make the building pop. Make sure to zoom in and check out the cheese slope technique used to get those smooth diagonal lines.

Aido K‘s latest LEGO masterpiece has left me lost for words. Well, not completely speechless – but this is a family-friendly website, so I can’t publish my audible reaction. My favourite genre of creation – if you can call it that – is people using the engineered properties of the LEGO system of parts in unusual ways. That’s where the idea for this build came in: LEGO bricks are designed to work under compression – that is, being squashed together. Aido turned that on its head, so this uses elements in tension (i.e. being pulled). So that boat in the middle is almost entirely shaped by chains under tension and the pull of gravity. It’s beautiful!

That means the boat can fold down flat for easy transport – which is just as well, as this model made its debut at the Brickvention show in Melbourne over the weekend. Seeing the boat rise from the chains is very satisfying!

In a LEGO world of castles, mechs, and spaceships it’s neat when someone with the amusing name of Pistash comes along and builds something totally ordinary. A golden faucet is an ordinary thing if you happen to be in a higher tax bracket than most, but you get what I mean. The smooth porcelain of the sink and even the water splatter effects are all amazing touches. I even love the gold wheel rim used as the drain. It was built for the Iron Forge competition over at, well, Iron Forge. We’ve been amazed with this builder’s work before. Check out our Pistash archives to see what I mean.

The proficiency of LEGO builders never ceases to amaze me. Timothy Shortell (AKA Classical Bricks) tells a story of coming across a photo of the Ta Prohm temple in Cambodia. A week goes by, and boom – we get this amazing model at the end of it. That’s no time at all! Just the careful positioning of the roof tiles for that jungle-weathered temple look must have taken a good while. In fact, all the weathering is very well judged, and the tree roots winding their way down to the ground – very nicely done. It’s almost unfair how quickly this was all achieved. When I build for a week, I’m lucky if I’ve even got a half-finished model at the end of it, let alone one as good as this!

Space Jam contestants, beware. Ted Andes is done with being a judge as of this year, and he’s getting involved in the LEGO building competition instead! It’s not just Ted you need to be wary of, though. His “Ravager” looks as deadly as it sounds. It has a touch of the “HR Giger”s about it – which is appropriate, given it’s entered in the Bio-Mechanical Fusion category (Giger was a pioneer of the biomechanical art style). But it’s even more apt that this look is achieved using a host of Bionicle parts. Bio-Mechanical, indeed!

Before Robert Pattinson, before Ben Affleck, and before Will Arnett, the world called Christian Bale Batman. And @jnj_bricks commemorates that time in brick from this first foray into the character

While LEGO Batman will forever be Will Arnett, there’s certainly room for creations that take the caped crusader a bit more seriously. For instance, check out this glorious scene from Batman Begins by Joe (jnj_bricks). Within their temple high in the Tibetan Himalayas, the League of Shadows is about to adopt a new member. But Bruce Wayne manages an escape from Ra’s al Ghul and his minions. Here we see the explosion that kicks off the action-packed scene, frozen in plastic-y time. And it’s a good thing, too, because it allows us plenty of time to admire Joe’s impressive use of Harry Potter wands in the vignette. Employed both in the windows above and the railings below, the pair of wands still attached to their sprue provide an interesting and hard-to-achieve texture in the model.

Sometimes LEGO legends fade away for a little while but come back onto the scene in style and still chock full of piss and vinegar. Dennis Glaasker reminds us that it has been three years since he last built something but comes screeching back on a glorious low and bagged Harley. LEGO released the 10269 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy way back in 2019 and Dennis used this as the basis for his new ride, but even a casual glance at our old review proves that Denni’s design diverged greatly from there. Most notably you have the lowered stance, the massive 30″ front wheel, the slanted bags, and enough custom chrome LEGO pieces to make anyone’s heart rate race a little. Throw in some custom LED lights and you have all the makings of a badass build, true to Dennis’ style.
