Heck, the first time he was featured on this here blog was way back in 2007! And he’s still going strong, with a build that takes inspiration from two other space veterans. The first is Theo Bonne (Titolian), who created the D.O.A.S satellite back in 2011, before he went on to join LEGO as a set designer. That in turn inspired Hase0 to create a manned version, which we featured here at the time. Rob took his time with his iteration, but that allowed him to take advantage of plenty of new parts released in the meantime. And that makes for a great refresh of a classic piece of LEGO space design!

LEGO shipwright and Pirates fan Marooned Marin has created several impressive tall ships, from a remake of the Black Seas Barracuda to take on the Black Pearl. The builder’s latest is a cut above, and not just because of the saw-toothed prow that looks ready to rip through seas or rival ships. This time, it’s Captain Hook’s Jolly Roger that gets reimagined, but while the minifigs used are all from Disney, nothing about the ship’s design is taken from the animated classic. Instead, Marin finds a boldly original take that blends cartoony curves and nautical authenticity.

Marin built out the ship’s interiors with as much detail as the hull, with bunks for the crew, a galley, and an impressive captain’s quarters complete with an organ. There’s even a jail cell for oversized fairy prisoners.

Perhaps the most impressive feature it the ship’s stern that’s designed to look like a skull, complete with it’s own prate hat (with a smaller skull on it also wearing on a hat!). I love the rudder sticking out of the toothy maw like a blackened tongue. The skull motif was inspired by the Charon’s Chest from Pirate builder legend Captain Barbatos.

Instructions for Marooned Marin’s Jolly Roger are available on Rebrickable.

It’s just another LEGO build by Tim Lydy. Well, we say ‘just’ another LEGO build; in truth this builder is showing great prowess in his arena! Tim has done a great job of sculpting the muscles, for one thing. And yes, those 1×1 medium nougat studs are, ahem, well placed. Let’s focus on the armour that makes these Murmillo gladiators so recognisable! The different shades of gold serves to draw the focus to the helmet, where rings and clips are used to brilliant effect to create a nice organic faceplate. Whoever is building this guy’s opponent: may the Gods be on your side!

This week, we’re also posting a build from ToroLUG’s building challenge involving a lot of furniture – but it comes from Slick_Brick! And it’s funny how a similar prompt and idea can yield such different results. The rocking chair is the centrepiece, but that ball of yarn and knitting needles are great too. The cat makes more conventional use of the seed part, as does… Whatever lurks under the floorboards. Is that what was doing the knitting?

House of the Dragons is back with a vengeance as Season 3 kicked off on Sunday. Builder
Kamil Karpiński pays respect in LEGO to a standout pair from season 2: Meleys the Red Queen and her rider Rhaenys Targaryen. Kamil has proven adept at building minifig-scale monsters over the years, drawing on the world of The Witcher and Slavic mythology, and those skills shine in Meley’s design, specially the head and those piercing eyes peeking out from blade brows. Rhaenys looks great in minifig form too, wearing her wrinkles and armor proudly.

Seen in full, Meleys is truly dragon royalty, with nary a stud in sight, but oh so many spikes. Custom cloth works wonderfully for the leathery wings. As a fan of LEGO dragons, I wish that LEGO would incorporate supple cloth like this into their catalog for wings instead of rigid sail cloth or plastic.

Pinball machines bring out the kid in all of us, hanging out in an arcade losing quarters and setting high scores. And the Classic Space era of LEGO sets appeals to so many of us who got our first LEGO sets back in the 70’s through 90’s. The Brothers Brick contributor Bre Burns hits it out of the nostalgia ballpark with a fully functional LEGO pinball machine called “Benny’s Spaceship Adventure.” She spent several months perfecting the design with over 15,000 LEGO bricks, including LEGO Mindstorms NXT programmable bricks to make sounds and count your high score.

Bre has kindly shared loads of details about her LEGO masterpiece, which stands over two and a half feet tall, exclusively with The Brothers Brick. Let’s pull back that ball launcher, flick those flippers, and learn more about this amazing LEGO creation!

But first, let’s take a look at the pinball machine in action as Bre shares its working features and tells us a little bit about the design process in our latest TBB video.

Technical details

The complexity of creating a fully functional LEGO pinball machine is rather mind-boggling to those of us who work mostly with System bricks. What’s truly astounding is that Bre herself is new to Technic — Benny’s Spaceship Adventure is her first major LEGO Technic and Mindstorms project!

Bre tells us that the pinball machine incorporates three LEGO Mindstorms NXT “brain” bricks (one “mother” and two “subordinates”) connected to each other via Bluetooth. These NXT bricks control 9 NXT servo motors, 7 touch sensors, 2 color sensors, 2 light sensors, and 2 ultrasonic sensors.

In addition, the game includes 7 sets of LEGO PowerFunctions lights, at least 10 9-volt PowerFunctions single-bulb lights, a 9-volt double-bulb flashing light, 4 M motors, and 1 XL motor. Light-up features are further enhanced with a 9-volt fiber optics element.

The entire pinball machine can run on three or four PowerFunctions battery boxes, but can also be powered using an old 9-volt LEGO Trains speed regulator plugged into the wall.

Even the bouncing bumpers user LEGO rubber bands (more than 30), and the balls themselves are LEGO! Bre used several LEGO Mindstorms steel castor balls, of which one to four are on the table at any given point in time (depending on your luck and skill).

Build process

Bre tells us that she first came up with the idea for Benny’s Spaceship Adventure after Emerald City Comic-Con (ECCC) in March 2017, and spent the next few months building the first version, with a “mad dash” to finish it ahead of BrickCon in October. She unveiled the current version at this year’s ECCC in Seattle, just over a year after she began building. Overall, she spent between two hundred and three hundred hours to design, build, and program the pinball machine.

For those who played with Benny’s Spaceship Adventure at BrickCon last year, we asked Bre about the differences between the earlier version and the current version. How did the design and functionality improve? “At BrickCon, it wasn’t very functional due to programming bugs and limited strength in building connections that didn’t survive the drive to the Con,” Bre tells us. “At the time, removing the tabletop (or playfield) was the only way to get inside and fix things, which was really difficult.” But today, the machine includes lots of little doors and drawers to get inside and tweak or fix things, as well as much stronger connections to improve stability during gameplay and transportation for display.

Bre entered Benny’s Spaceship Adventure in a LEGO Technic contest called “Amazing Technic Machines,” and it’s no surprise to us that her amazing machine won! LEGO sent Bre several of the components she needed to finalize her creation, including the parts she used to build the movement feature with Benny’s Spaceship on top of the rear panel.

We asked Bre what she learned from displaying her final version at ECCC in March. “At ECC I realized,” she says, “That, like most real pinball pinball machines, leveling issues, realignments, and periodic breakdowns needed to be addressed, but I was able to achieve my goal of giving a couple hundred people the opportunity to play it.”

Resources, software, & tools

But before LEGO sent Bre a whole bunch of free brick, she had to gather most of the rest of the 15,000 parts. How did she do that? First, she planned sketched everything out on pen and paper to help estimate what she would need. Next, she turned to LEGO Digital Designer, but that turned out to be rather inefficient, “due to the need to see all the physics in action.” Nevertheless, she designed some of the side panel artwork digitally before she began sourcing various parts from the LEGO Store Pick-a-Brick wall (“at least 20-25 cups”), BrickLink, and eBay.

The mosaic parts were created by overlaying a digital LEGO grid, created by a computer program that Bre’s fiancée uses at work, onto images. The program was then used to place digital bricks into the images to get the right looks and part-counts. Printouts were used as blueprints.

We wondered how she managed the cost of purchasing multiple NXT bricks. “I began purchasing the robotic components on eBay,” she says,”And kept with NXT because I couldn’t afford multiple EV3s.” Bre then used the LEGO NXT-G software to program the bricks, learning as she built by watching LEGO Mindstorms tutorials on YouTube. Here’s a bit of the program Bre built to run her pinball machine.

This early version of a flow diagram illustrates just how complex the interactions are between the sensors and other input devices, the Mindstorms NXT “brain” bricks, and the various motors and other output components.

Challenges & obstacles

Bre set herself a particularly challenging goal — use only official LEGO products. What impact did that constraint have on the process? “No gluing, screwing, fabrication, or modification of any of the parts, including balls, rubber bands, and even the use of the LEGO NXT-G software instead of another programming platform.” We watched Bre build and rebuild her pinball machine during BrickCon and ECCC, and continue to be impressed with how committed she has been to this goal!

She also tried to build the table itself as close as possible to a 6.5-degree standard pinball grade.

How the heck do you move this from place to place without it falling to pieces?! “I get asked a lot about this,” Bre tells us. “The machine sits on a custom piece of plywood and is moved as a whole unit. It can technically be broken down by taking off the tabletop (which is actually two parts), and sliding the faceplate (the Classic Space logo) through the top. But leaving these in place actually holds it together better, so I don’t take them off during transport. Honestly, it doesn’t transport well, because bumps eventually throw things out of alignment.”

Ultimately, Bre was fighting with the limits of the plastic medium and the laws of physics, which both proved the most challenging obstacles as the table flew apart repeatedly, hammered by steel balls in motion. But she persevered over nearly 14 months, with help from her fiancée Jessie, who designed the little control room and the platform for Benny’s moving spaceship, among other things. But LEGO is a global community, and Bre was able to collaborate not just with local friends and LEGO builders like fellow SEALUG members, but also people far away like Steve Hassenplug, who built one of the earliest LEGO pinball machines.

What is Bre the proudest of? “LEGO is meant to be played with,” Bre says, “And I wanted this to be an inspiration to young builders, so getting people to play it and seeing kids’ faces light up made all the difficulties totally worth it.” Her pinball machine is a wonderful marriage of functionality and aesthetics, with wonderful mosaics on the case surrounding an incredibly complex mechanical interior.

And what did Bre learn from this marriage of System, Technic, and Mindstorms? “Combining these elements is easier than some may think,” she says, “And that really enhances the build. I had only really used System until this point and learned how to incorporate Technic and Mindstorms by teaching myself from scratch. If I could do it, anyone can. It’s meant for kids, after all!”

#HamsterMadness is here, as a pack of builders reinterpret the LEGO Creator hamster set in their own ways. They've all gone ham(ster)!

Last year we covered the Happy Plant Madness collab, where a group of skilled builders took the Happy Plants set and each added their own creative spin to the model. We’re pleased to announce that the madness has returned, this time with LEGO Creator 3-in-1 31376 Cute Hamster with a Flower! In the group’s own words, the name hamster comes from the German word ‘hamstern‘, which means to forage. Many of the original builders (and some newcomers!) returned with a goal of transforming the cute little Hamster into a creation of their own. We’re continually impressed with the creativity that this community brings to official sets.

As a master of unique character builds and one of the collab founders, tee_baum_bricks introduces Lord Lemmiwinks the Brave and his trusty snail squire Ronald Ectum. These two are very adorably prepared for battle, and we’re fawning over our hamster hero’s armor.

Matthias Freund offers a somewhat grim take on the little hamster, though a soft warm seat by the fire makes for a nice evening for someone else.

Trevor Pearson-Jones is no stranger to TBB features or unconventional builds, and the Hamsterhead Shark is nothing short of what we’ve come to expect out of such a creative builder.

Trevor has developed a habit of having more creativity than one build will allow (see his multiple entries for the Mega Poké-llab), and he fittingly introduced a second build this time around with Huey The Hamstropod. In a purist move for the ages, this furry snail leaves behind a slime trail of plastic LEGO bag trimmings.

The Hamster of Justice by Bushido Bricks is a S.H.I.E.L.D. classified hero with multiple powers and backstory deserving of its own Disney+ series. Check out the lore on Benny’s post!

In “Hamster’s Bad Day”, Thundrabuilds shows off a lucky mouse and a not-so-lucky hamster. We choose to believe he’s okay, but if he’s not, this could also work as a prequel to Matthias’ build.

Even with the abundance of building contests in the community, creating LEGO MOCs is not a competition. In fact, far from competing with other builders, other people’s creations can often be a great source of inspiration! TBB alum Nannan Zhang‘s sculpture of the mighty Aztec deity Quetzalcoatl has been a whole five years in the making. It started out as an idea to develop Bruce Lowell‘s bottomless pit optical illusion into an Aztec temple. The intricate pattern around the outside was to make use of interlocking rail plates, as posted by Piotr Hofman some dozen years ago. The structure they combine to create is already very nice. But then, like all of us, Nannan was wow’ed by Donny Chen‘s legendary golden dragon, which inspired the feathered serpent rearing out of the top. All that remains to be seen now is who will be inspired by Nannan’s creation to make something new!

Matt de Lanoy (@pepa_quin1) has finally completed his model of the John G. Shedd Aquarium, just in time for @brickworld Chicago!

The post Enormous Shedd Aquarium replica houses every LEGO fish under the sea! appeared first on The Brothers Brick.

When Matt de Lanoy builds with LEGO, he builds big. This is a builder who has a history of enormous dioramas packed full of juicy brick-built detail, and his latest creation is a doozy! Chicago residents may recognise this as the Shedd Aquarium. We’re told this has been on Illinois native Matt’s bucket list for a while, and after three years of building, it made its public debut at Brickworld Chicago this weekend.

The best thing about such big builds is all the detail and easter eggs that can be squeezed in. And the LEGO Shedd doesn’t disappoint!

Let’s get a lay of the land first. It’s a bit tricky to judge from here, but by my rough calculations this is 250-odd studs wide by well over 300 long. That’s big!

All sides of the building are covered too. Here’s a minifigure’s-eye view that will be familiar to anyone who has ever visited the aquarium.

The outside is full of detail, including some lush gardenscapes. I particularly like the use of a Duplo figure as a statue!

You may recognise some of the visitors, especially in the car park outside! Is animal transport Mack’s side-hustle in the Piston Cup off-season?

Since this is a build designed for the exhibition circuit, many of the roofs have been omitted to allow viewers to see inside parts of the building. I love rays, so I know which bit of the aquarium I’ll be heading to first!

As with many aquariums, the centrepiece is the oceanarium where we can see dolphins performing tricks to the denizens of brick-built Chicago. (Should that be Brickago?)

As for the rest of the tanks, they’re displayed along the outside of the build, allowing just about every aquatic LEGO creature to be represented…

Now that many of us have finished building the largest Lord of the Rings set to date (and are collectively wondering where on Earth we’re going to put it), we thought we’d take a look behind the scenes with the design team. We had the opportunity to preview the set last September and Jake sat down with LEGO Designer Francois Zapf to get a peek into the design process behind the White City. We had very high expectations for this one, and Francois and team took the challenge and exceeded them. If you’re on the fence or just curious to see more, be sure to check out our monstrous set review of LEGO Lord of the Rings 11377 Minas Tirith (a set so large and detailed that it requires a Part 1 and Part 2).

TBB: Why don’t you start from the beginning with how you settled on this design for Minas Tirith?

Francois Zapf: The idea was to explore a different approach for this model – it was tricky to nail it. The first thing we had was a gigantic concept. It was too big, but impressive….and it kind of sold the idea of doing Minas Tirith. We made some other explorations, like a totally microscale Architecture model, but we wanted to align it with Barad-dûr and Rivendell and to allow some minifigures in the model. This meant that we had to build locations where minifigs can interact with the model, and the mix of those two approaches was the solution we found.

There’s a lot of compromise with the model. It’s really big, so we tried to present the whole shape of Minas Tirith – like the rock and the seven levels. The walls are actually a little bit too big and not to scale, but that also means that you can have a sweet location where a minifig can be displayed and interact with the set. The gates were designed to accommodate a horse and a minifig, like Gandalf and Shadowfax.

TBB: So a cave troll can fit through there as well?

FZ: Oh no, don’t break my beautiful wall! (laughs) A big-fig can also go through the doors.

That’s the funny thing – to keep the microscale look at the front, everything is hidden behind the walls. But if you want to recreate a battle scene, you can also place the minifigures on top. There is also a tiny feature where you can actually remove the roof to the gate towers and you can place minifigs in them.

We went with the Barad-dûr approach of micro- and minifig scale. We were thinking about what we could put in the gigantic space in the back of the model. There’s not a lot of internal stuff you can see in the movie, except for the gigantic throne room: The Hall of Kings. With this space, we thought, “Let’s go big. Let’s make something that’s impressive and massive.” With all the geometry and decor it’s breathtaking. Honestly, I love it.

We have this crown ornament hanging there, and also some hidden rooms. A little library for Gandalf, and a bedroom that was inspired by the Houses of Healing. We cherry-picked some references to come up with the furniture.

TBB: We can put Faramir in there – but we have to wait until next year to get Eowyn?

FZ: (Laughs) Who knows? That was also something that was super tricky with Minas Tirith, since there are a lot of things going on outside and inside. We had to create some boundaries, because we went to thinking, “Oh, we can introduce the Battle of the Pelennor Fields”, but then where is my Oliphaunt? Where are the siege towers? Then, “Let’s focus on the coronation”, but then where is the entire cast? Then it’s a different model. Here it’s just a celebration of Minas Tirith as a landmark. That’s why with the minifigure lineup we tried to keep it with what is inside the city and not what is happening outside. Just as Barad-dûr is a celebration of Sauron and the bad guys, here the main character is Aragorn King Elessar.

TBB: It seems like a good opportunity for fans to supplement the build if they want to do Pelennor Fields. I’d bet a minifig-scale elephant would make a great Oliphaunt at this scale. Are you allowed to talk about the GWP at this point?

FZ: No, but there is one that has been made for this model. So, your best guess?

TBB: You decided to focus on the good guys (the Gondorians and their allies), but we see some trebuchets and battle damage – are there other things that are more oriented with the Battle?

FZ: It’s more like an icon of the city – you can see the trebuchet before the battle. It’s also because designing something that is big and wide is a little bit boring. So the challenge was also to introduce as many little splashes of color as much as possible, and the trebuchet is a nice little addition. You were talking about battle damage. Those walls are super boring and all white, so to break a little bit of the whiteness up we made some cracks and things to represent that it’s a really old city – over a thousand years – but the walls are still standing. Those are the tiny nods we implemented so that the city feels like it has a past.

TBB: The doors of the Main Gate feature minifigure statuette/trophies. Did you consider using any of those minifigure trophies to represent scenes from the movie at microscale?

FZ: No, but as I mentioned there was once a concept that was architecture scale. With that concept we tried to play with trophies, but we really wanted to introduce some minifigures with the model, so making a lot of trophies just to represent characters when we could make actual minifigures that were more desirable….

TBB: Much more desirable.

FZ: Plus, introducing minifigures for the first time like King Elessar and the Gondorian guards.

TBB: Did you work on any previous LOTR sets?

You’ve probably heard of Antica Bracanov, she designed Barad-dûr and she helped me especially with the outer walls. And actually the chicken… She insisted on keeping the chicken in the model. I know you can see it for a split second in the movie. She insisted. She made it pretty clear: “You have to keep the chicken.” So there it is.

Another designer who helped me a lot in designing the model is Mike Psiaki, who worked on Rivendell of course. More than 8,000 pieces is a lot for one person. Having a couple of brains helping on the model is always nice. And all of the graphic designers, because of the minifigs.

The best one to highlight is definitely Aragorn, who is fully decorated. He has decoration on the armor, the torso, and also has a new element which is the crown and hair piece. If you’re looking at the head of the white statues, it’s the same element as the one used for Aragorn.

TBB: Are there any new sword elements?

FZ: The swords are actually existing elements. Our approach with the swords was to have three different kinds. The main swords are the hero’s swords. Gandalf actually has this same sword in the book nook set while fighting the Balrog. There’s one smaller sword for Pippin. Then there is a medium-sized sword for Faramir and all of the soldiers. We made sure to have one sword for every soldier, so they can fight with a sword in addition to their spears. This element I think was first made for The Hobbit sets back in 2012, so it’s still a Lord of the Rings element! (laughs)

TBB: When researching this set, did you exclusively use the Peter Jackson films for inspiration or did you look at other references or illustrations of the location?

FZ: I did, but we were making a set based on Peter Jackson’s trilogy, so we mostly looked to get it accurate to the bigature model from the pictures. That was a great reference and we tried to match as many details as possible, like the towers being roughly at the same location. You can have fun by just looking at the houses and things like that and saying “Oh yeah, that one is actually this one from the movie”. It was really fun to try to capture as many details as possible. But yeah, it’s totally 100% based on the Peter Jackson trilogy.

TBB: For a model of this shape and scale, making sure that it’s structurally sound and sturdy enough to be a major release must be really challenging. What were some of the challenges that you faced, and were there any tricks that you came up with to overcome those challenges?

FZ: Okay, so you can see it’s pretty empty in the back. That’s an issue when you want to just stack bricks and make it strong. At the beginning of the development process when I showed a first draft of the model to my model coach, he said “Yeah it’s nice, but can you make a split here to make the building experience and build flow easier?”

Then there was a problem of how to make it strong enough. It works really well because I was inspired by real life architecture. All those triangles everywhere are Pythagorean triples. It’s 3 – 4 – 5 over there, 8 – 15 – 17 at the front, and everything is connected right at the top where the ornament is hanging. As you can see, all the weight of the model on every side is locking here with the arches, so this is actually super strong. That’s fun, because it works in real life and also works in LEGO.

TBB: You mentioned the split halfway through the city, does it lift off?

FZ: No, actually. It’s during the building of the model. You start from scratch – you’re building up to there and then you stop. Then you build this entire section and you place it on top and it’s locked in with the rocks, so the rock is actually locking the two sections together.

TBB: I think the Death Star had some similar techniques where different layers get locked in.

FZ: It’s mostly to facilitate the build flow and the building experience. Because it’s hard to show the entire model on one page. That’s why we like to do some set builds. You start from scratch, you’re building a nice little set build, and then you attach it to the main model. This is a gigantic set build.

The Court of the Fountain is also a set build, it serves no purpose (separately) aside from just carrying the model around. We also build this as one chunk, and then you place it on top.

It actually makes a really nice forced perspective with the back. It was a compromise we made, because otherwise the model would have been too big if it was full size. But you can place minifigures on top of it if you don’t mind the scale.

And where better to go than back to the source? This is the xenomorph, mechanised! You know, as if they weren’t scary enough as is, without a suit of armour. The white is in contrast to the original black, making it look almost clinical. It’s a good job no-one tried to bio-engineer these things…

I must confess: when I saw this sculpture by LEGO artist Raymond Girard – AKA Pen and Brick – my first thought was all the great puns one could make about a LEGO hand sculpture. But I won’t be doing that. Partly because we’ve made plenty of them already (exhibit A), but mainly making shoddy puns feels a bit reductive for such a personal build. Some years ago, Raymond had an accident that left him with reduced use of his dominant hand. Thanks to years of surgery and therapy, he has been able to resume his colourful, MC Escher-esque LEGO artworks. This sculpture is both a self-portrait of his own journey through that process, and a gift to those who helped him along the way. It only serves to make an already beautiful build that much more poignant.

The past fortnight or so has seen a huge amount of gaming news, from the hotly-anticipated Nintendo Direct to an entire event dedicated to wholesome games. But what got this writer hyped was the next instalment in the Halo series. OK, it’s a remake, but still: three new levels! Master Chief! Sergeant Johnson! And where the Chief and Johnson go, you can be sure to find <del>high levels of sass</del> an M12 Force Application Reconnaissance Vehicle – better known as the Warthog. That would have been reason enough to celebrate this LEGO model recently posted by Axidroid!

Axidroid’s model makes great use of some new parts to achieve the vehicle’s complex angles. But Halo – and by extension the Warthog – have been around for 25 years now. LEGO builders have been building them for almost as long, and many didn’t have the range of parts or even colours we have now! So let’s take a trip down memory lane and examine the brick-built history of the Halo ‘hog…

The first Warthogs were likely made out of LEGO shortly after the first Halo trailers were shown, so we need to go back to a time before Flickr, Instagram, or even the Brothers Brick. We need to go to the gloriously old-school Brickshelf! The earliest model I can find is from 2002, posted by a user called BrokenEarth. It – and the photos – may be rudimentary, but within a couple of years it had already developed into the shape below. As we shall see, it set the tone for what was to come. It’s even built seven studs wide, a standard that car builders still use today!

Around the same time, a couple of names that will be familiar to Brothers Brick readers of a certain vintage crop up with their own versions. First, Tyler Clites (Legohaulic) took a punt in the limited sand green palette…

… and Mike Psiaki built the version on the left around the same windscreen piece. He also updated his model two years later, posting this comparison in 2006. Mike would of course go on to work as a designer at LEGO. They all start somewhere!

The first Warthog to grace the pages of the Brothers Brick was another of Tyler’s, this time posted on Flickr. He’s still sticking with sand green, but the windscreen looks more similar to the BrokenEarth one posted earlier. Building in purple may have been a step too far though, opting instead for a red Covenant Phantom to oppose the Master Chief in the Warthog!

Brian Kescenovitz, however, flipped that idea on its head. The Covenant now fly in purple, but the UNSC has ditched the green for the grey (and yet another approach for the cockpit area). This was posted to the now-defunct MOCpages in 2007, so even then, dark bluish grey was only three years old.

You know what hadn’t yet happened in 2007? Mega Bloks picking up the Halo license. That meant that many LEGO fans (including yours truly) harboured dreams of LEGO Halo sets or games. Even the Official Xbox magazine took note of this, featuring then-TBB contributor Nannan Zhang‘s take on Tyler’s Warthog design. He later made a civilian variant, too.

That, in turn, inspired Alex Jones (AKA Orion Pax) to make his own version of the vehicle. But hey, guess what, sand green is still rarer than IWHBYD dialogue! So the diminutive Warthog here is in desert camo. That’s a Slizer windscreen on the Pelican dropship, by the way – another blast from the past!

If we’re going to talking about LEGO Halo, there is one builder who cannot go unmentioned: Nick Jensen. Nick has made a name for himself building life-sized LEGO replicas of props, including those from the Halo franchise. But he had a few cracks at the humble ‘hog, too. First in 2010…

… Then in 2012, which was refined shortly after for this Halo 4 version…

… Followed by further refinements in 2016, culminating in this most recent model posted in 2019. Even 15 years later, that 2×4 sloped wedge is still the closest match to the angular Warthog windscreen. But look how much sand green we have now!

In fact, that solution for the windscreen was something of a constant for many years, despite some big variations in chassis design. Chris_cobra also built this in the wake of Halo 4 releasing in 2013, making good use of flex tube to break up the sharp edges of the LEGO slopes.

The colour still wasn’t a good match though – and some took drastic action to remedy this. Purists, look away now! Marius Hermann busted out the spray paint to create not just an accurately-coloured Warthog, but a great big Pelican to go with it too. But let’s be honest: who are we to argue when the results are this good?

While System builders may have been lamenting a lack of proper colours, at least they weren’t building in a medium like LEGO Technic, where such parts were even less readily available. So what to do instead? Upscale, add motorised functions including steering and a moving turret, and you have a Warthog that’s as wicked as Nico71‘s Technic model!

And even after all this time, people are still finding new ways to revamp the Halo Warthog. HereticCreations is a builder who likes to refine their MOCs, as we heard in their excellent interview! And with all that talk about shades of green… Did no-one really think to make an Arctic camo Warthog?!

LEGO artist why.not? returns after a 5 year hiatus with a new scene of urban decay.

After a five year absence, the LEGO artist who goes by why.not? has returned with another haunting build of subtle beauty. Over an incredible 4 year run of posting, why.not? shared dozens of challenging creations that explore mortality, identity, despair, and islands of hope in nightmarish visions. Existential themes are matched by stunning techniques, especially the mosaic work as brick-built skies or graffiti. When the mysterious builder stopped posting back in 2021, it was a huge loss for the frontiers of LEGO art. We’re certainly not alone at feeling relieved by the builder’s surprise return, even if the art itself can be disquieting. The builder’s latest is a return to an earlier motif of urban decay, evocatively lit. Here, just a dim beam of light illuminates a sliver of a long-forgotten room.

The build picks up right where the builder left off years ago with this scene that showcases the grungy specificity of abandoned places. Cheese slopes and SNOT trickery make possible impressive graffiti, grime, and what appears to be blood. Cloth tent elements are uncanny as soiled cardboard. A mysteriously lit PC monitor hints that this hopeless place might be more metaphor than urban exploration.

why.not?’s metaphorical power really shines on this abandoned scene where ugly graffiti and cracks in a darkened room open up to a bright green world.

If you haven’t encountered why.not’s work before, it is absolutely worth a deeper look. However, be warned that there are images of self harm, and the mature subject matter isn’t for children. You can also see our past why.not write ups here.

As of today, they have announced another one: light blue, applied to both a minifigure and baby-figure. But the best part? It comes with an entire pinball machine! LEGO Icons 11374 Arcade Pinball Machine is a fully-functional replica of the classic arcade pastime. Launch is 1st July for LEGO Insiders, while non-Insiders will need to wait until July 4 for their turn. It will contain 2,274 pieces and set you back US $229.99 | CAN $319.99 | UK £189.99. Thankfully, though, you won’t need to insert a nickel every time you want to play!
