In late January, he played in just one game during a seven-game stretch. That appearance was the definition of garbage time: The final six minutes of a 33-point win against Charlotte.

That's when the Knicks came to AmericanAirlines Arena on Jan. 27th. This is where Haslem tells his story.

"Before each game, I go to chapel," Haslem said.

It is held an hour before tip-off in a small room between the two teams' locker rooms. A handful of players attend. A pastor oversees it and typically asks the players if there's anything they want to pray for.

Often, players talk of health or loved ones or maybe a friend going through a tough time. Haslem has been attending these chapels for eight NBA seasons and has heard it all.

Until this one.

Lin did something Haslem never heard before.

"Can you pray I don't get cut?" Lin told the pastor and other players.

This wasn't a joke or a passing thought. Lin already was cut twice, after all. He felt he was at the end again.

Haslem never had played against Lin, never talked with him, never even seen him before this chapel. But he looked at him that night and immediately appreciated his story.

Haslem knows what it's like to go undrafted, to be not wanted by any team and forge a career through hard work and self-belief.

"I understood where he was coming from," Haslem said.

The pastor prayed for Lin that night. Haslem did, too. Then Lin went out and did what he usually did. He didn't play in the Heat's win.

"But a week later it was da-da-da," Haslem says, giving the ESPN SportsCenter entry noise.

Lin scored 25 against the Nets. He then had 38 against the Lakers. And hit a game-winner against Toronto.

He kept the improbable on the court by leading the Knicks to victory and the impossible off it by making them a lovable team for the first time in decades.

Now he's a known story. Something called the Harvard Sports Collective Analysis compared his effect on ticket prices to Tim Tebow's effect (Lin has made a greater effect). There's a movement for him to play for China in the Olympics.

Haslem will go to chapel again before Thursday's game. He expects Lin will be there, too. Maybe they'll trade hellos. Maybe not.

But Haslem is sure one thing has changed in 27 days since they last sat there.

"I don't think he'll be praying not to get cut," he says.

I never would have imagined I would look up to Jeremy Lin for inspiration.

Lin's combination of humility, hard work, faith, and relentlessness is rare. Just today I compared my own life journey to the overnight sensation. We need more humble, straight headed players like Lin for the youth to look up to and pattern their own journey after.

That’s the kind of flexibility that brands, some of them still wary of the limitations of what they can do on Facebook, have been looking for. They want even more as well, but this could crack open more advertising dollars to the company

Facebook is making big promises as well, as the slide pictured shows: a 40% rise in engagement, an 80% jump in recall and a 16% increase in fan rate.

via forbes.com

10 Quotes From "The Start-up of YOU"

The following memorable quotes are from Reid Hoffman (co-founder and chairman of LinkedIn) from his new book, "The Start-up of You: Adapt to the Future, Invest in Yourself, and Transform Your Career."

These quotes can apply to almost everyone so I thought I'd share:

1. “All humans are entrepreneurs not because they should start companies but because the will to create is encoded in human DNA.”

2. “Entrepreneurship is a life idea, not a stricly business one; a global idea, not a strictly American one.”

3. “Before dreaming about the future or marking plans, you need to articulate what you already have going for you – as entrepreneurs do.”

4. “When you’re doing work you care about, you are able to work harder and better.”

5. “You remake yourself as you grow and as the world changes. Your identity doesn’t get found. It emerges.”

6. “Whatever the situation, actions, not plans, generate lessons that help you test your hypotheses against reality.”

7. “No matter how brilliant your mind or strategy, if you’re playing a solo game, you’ll always lose out to a team.”

8. “The fastest way to change yourself is to hang out with people who are already the way you want to be.”

9. “If you want to build a strong network that will help you move ahead in your career, it’s vital to first take stock of the connections you already have.”

10. “What will get you somewhere is being able to access the information you need, when you need it.”

via forbes.com

But Digital Sport is not just about creating must-have sports gadgets. Getting so close to its consumers' data holds exceptional promise for one of the world's greatest marketers: It means it can follow them, build an online community for them, and forge a tighter relationship with them than ever before. It's part of a bigger, broader effort to shift the bulk of Nike's marketing efforts into the digital realm -- and it marks the biggest change in Beaverton since the creation of just do it, or even since a graphic design student at Portland State University put pen to paper and created the Swoosh.

Nike's new digital hook: the Nike+ logo; the new Nike FuelBand; and the Nike+ SportWatch GPS

Just try to recall the last couple of Nike commercials you saw on television. Don't be surprised when you can't. Nike's spending on TV and print advertising in the U.S. has dropped by 40% in just three years, even as its total marketing budget has steadily climbed upward to hit a record $2.4 billion last year. "There's barely any media advertising these days for Nike," says Brian Collins, a brand consultant and longtime Madison Avenue creative executive.

In what seemed like an unrelated move, in September, Facebook announced a brand new type of profile called Timeline, where your whole personal history is laid out by month-by-month, all the way back to your birth. At the time, Facebook described it to consumers as a chance to: “Share and highlight your most memorable posts, photos and life events on your timeline. This is where you can tell your story from beginning, to middle, to now.” By the end of this year all 800 million plus Facebook profiles will have been converted to this new interface.

What most users don’t know is that the new features being introduced are all centered around increasing the value of Facebook to advertisers, to the point where Facebook representatives have been selling the idea that Timeline is actually about re-conceptualizing users around their consumer preferences, or as they put it, “brands are now an essential part of people’s identities.”

The name itself is cleverly designed to conceal the fact that your profile no longer arranges information chronologically. Yes, things are laid out by year and by month. But, when it comes to what’s displayed to your social circle at any given time, other metrics, including direct payments to Facebook itself, will now influence the ranking and placement of stories. This payola will be a crucial part of the graph rank, the new metric for placement that the social network uses to determine what appears on your profile.

via betabeat.com

Google Circles and Path 2.0: How good UI design cannot fix a broken solution

Once again: it doesn’t matter how great and fun an experience is, good UI design cannot fix a broken solution. Good design can effectively differentiate a good solution, and bad design can completely ruin a good solution. But good design simply cannot make up for a solution that doesn’t address a core user need really well. As a recent post on ZURBlog proclaimed, people don’t buy products – they buy the benefit.

I’m afraid that in the case of both Google Circles and Path 2.0, they might just be flawed solutions wrapped in a layer of beautiful UI design. It’s fun to play with for a while, but when it inevitably becomes tedious you eventually just forget to use it. Forever.

via elezea.com and brianfrank.com

As more of my own peers join Path and Google+ still resembling the remnants of a ghost town, the benefits of both are starting to dwindle for me. What happened to attacking the problem of sharing for "normal people"?

Path was originally meant for sharing only with your 50 closest friends, but since Path 2.0 I can't help but add friends that send me a request that I don't really consider super close. And when I do, they're over sharing the most mundane of things (i.e. self-portraits, napping on a Tuesday afternoon, listening to Lady Gaga, etc.) without giving me too much control on what I see (aside from booting them). Path really is a personal journal, but do you really want your friends reading it?

There's no question the app is beautiful, but I don't know how much longer it will prove to be beneficial for my own sharing needs.

Admittedly, Path was more fun when I was just friends with my girlfriend.

Google+ has not solved any need for me as of late. It's great for the occasional sharing of a funny .gif or YouTube video with the same circle of friends, but social media pundits have seemed to overtake the network. Where are all the "normal people"? Of course, they could just be sharing privately, but what does Google+ do for me an email couldn't serve just as well?

This post is more so about my own sharing preferences and not a critique of the services. The private sharing idea is still new to a lot of people, but the benefits are so immense that it will be the decisive factor in a future where more "normal people" are cognizant of privacy, ease of use, and overall benefit.

How effective are QR codes in marketing to college students?

Here are just a few of our findings:

81% of students owned a smartphone

80% of students had previously seen a QR code

21% of students successfully scanned our QR code example.

75% of students said they are “Not Likely” to scan a QR code in the future.

QR codes do enjoy a high-level of awareness among college students yet only a fraction (21%) could properly scan and activate the code. Why the discrepancy? According to our findings, students simply struggled with the process. Some didn’t know a 3rd party app was needed, many mistakenly assumed it could be activated with their camera, and others just lost interest, saying the activity took too long. This could be why 75% of students said they were “Not Likely” to scan QR codes in the future.

I still have never scanned a QR code. Ever.

When I see a QR code in an advertisement, I ask myself two things:

1. How the hell do I scan this? Even if I really wanted to scan this QR code, I have absolutely no idea which app I would use. I consider myself pretty tech-savvy, but this is one thing I won't bother finding out how to solve.
2. I usually see these codes durring my commute. Who in their sane minds would go through the trouble and walk up to an advertisement in a crowded, moving train?

Am I alone in this? Have you ever taken the time to scan a QR code?

For member-based organizations looking to foster community in a walled web-garden, Posterous has your back. The site also makes good on its tagline by offering autopost services for any social-web destination you can think of — and then some.

What an incredible statement game at the Stick against an evenly matched team to go 8-1. Like always, the defense continues to play like the elite unit they are and Alex Smith did a great job moving the ball even without Frank Gore. The only iffy moments we had were the times our secondary got torched by Eli Manning who's campaigning to be in the conversation of elite QB's in the NFL.

The atmosphere had a playoff vibe to it and from the looks of how we've been playing and how our upcoming schedule is, the question of whether the 49ers are making the playoffs is more of a when than an if. Now that that question's solved, Niner Nation still has one question for the non-believers: Who's got it better than us??? (Answer)
