Lisa Hannigan is an irishsinger-songwriter who is perhaps best known as the female vocalist from Damien Rice’s best selling breakthrough albums O and 9. Lisa also appears on backing vocals on Mic Christopher’s album Skylarkin, as well as the soundtrack to “Goldfish Memory”.

In 2005 Lisa and Damien co-wrote Unplayed Piano which was released to support the Free Aung San Suu Kyi 60th Birthday Campaign.

A stunning vocalist, Lisa regularly performed live with Damien from early 2001 until March 2007 when Rice’s offical website announced that his professional relationship with Lisa had “run its creative course”.

Lisa was also a member of The Cake Sale, a collective of mostly Irish, but featuring some international artists, formed by Brian Crosby of Bell X1. On 3rd November 2006 they released a self-titled album in Ireland to raise money for Oxfam and the Irish Make Trade Fair campaign. The album was so successful that it was given an international release the following year; released 10th September 2007 in the UK and 16th October 2007 in the US.

Lisa has since gone on to pursue her own solo career, releasing her first album Sea Sew in Ireland on September 12th 2008, debuting at number 4 and earning her a Choice Music Prize nomination as well as two Meteor Music Award nominations. The album’s first single was Lille followed by I Don’t Know.
Sea Sew got an official US release on February 3rd 2009 and a UK release on May 4th 2009.

Joseph Arthur is a contemporary singer-songwriter from Akron, Ohio. He was discovered by Peter Gabriel in the mid-’90s, and signed to Gabriel’s Real World label.

Joseph began writing and playing music in his early teens, after inheriting an electronic keyboard from his aunt: ”I couldn’t play along with my records, so that’s why I started writing my own. The keyboard had a sequencer so I started writing these little electronic music things. I thought I was a genius, and I would play them for my mom. And she’d be like, ‘It sounds like Chinese music,’ and it would crush me. I wanted her to say, ‘That’s the most genius thing I’ve ever heard.’ At age 16, he played bass in a blues band called Frankie Starr and the Chill Factor, which disbanded by 1991. Joseph graduated from Firestone High School in 1990 and continued developing his music.

In the early ’90s, Arthur relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, continuing to record home demos, playing local clubs and working as a guitar salesman at Clark Music Store.

Harvey Schwartz, Peter Gabriel’s A&R associate, was presenting Gabriel new artists at his apartment in New York City, with one of the demo tapes being Arthur’s first EP, Cut and Blind. Gabriel offered him a deal with Real World Records. Both Gabriel and Schwartz arranged a live audition at the Fez in New York City, where Arthur flew up from Atlanta. The night was clearly a success; not only was Lou Reed a guest in the audience, but within a few months Arthur was officially signed, making him the first American recording artist signed to Gabriel’s label. Recording for his debut album began at Gabriel’s Real World Studios in England with producer Markus Dravs (Björk engineer; co-producer of Coldplay’s 2008 album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends). The debut album Big City Secrets was released worldwide in spring 1997, and Arthur joined Gabriel’s WOMAD tour in Europe. Two years later, he recorded a mini-album called Vacancy, which earned him a Grammy nomination in 2000 for best recording package.

In April 2000, he released Come to Where I’m From which, for the first time, exposed him to a larger audience (also thanks to opening up for Ben Harper and Gomez). During the same period, a live album recorded at the Gypsy Tea Room in Dallas, Texas saw a promotional release. After releasing a series of 4 tour-only EPs called Junkyard Hearts, his third album,Redemption’s Son, came out in May 2002 in the UK (and November 2002 in the US, after being dropped by EMI in North America).

In the middle of a long and successful tour during which performances were, to a large extent, recorded and sold immediately after the last note had been played, he found time to release one more album: an alternative rock project called Holding the Void (featuring Arthur on vocals and guitar, Pat Sansone on vocals and bass, and Rene Lopez on vocals and drums).

In Summer 2003, he went on tour with Tracy Chapman in the US. After signing a new recording contract with Vector Recordings, Arthur began recording his fourth official studio album,Our Shadows Will Remain.

Our Shadows Will Remain was released in October 2004. While touring the US alone and with Joan Wasser in promotion for the album, a new EP called And the Thieves Are Gone came out in December 2004. Shortly afterwards, Arthur went on a brief tour with R.E.M. throughout Europe.

Arthur spent 2005 again on tour in both the US and Europe. Arthur staged his first art exhibition in 2006 at the Vertigo Gallery in London from February 10 to February 12. In August 2006, Joseph was invited to help launch the project A River Blue, where one hundred young people in northern Uganda were brought together to participate in a music, drama, and art festival. Joseph also recorded the song “A River Blue” for the foundation:

“

“A River Blue” is a song I recorded with over one hundred orphans of the LRA nightmare in Northern Uganda. I wrote the song before I went to Uganda…I felt a little embarrassed about singing this with them as I could never understand the depth of their plight. During my visit there I was more interested in their own songs and paintings and…their incredible beauty. However upon coming home and mixing this whole event together, the song (”A River Blue”) and our collaboration has gained power for me and strikes me now as a landmark blow against poverty and ambivalence.

”

Also in 2006, Joseph and longtime professional partner Lauren Pattenaude started his own record label, Lonely Astronaut Records. He released an artbook with accompanying instrumental CD in May 2006, titled The Invisible Parade (CD) & We Almost Made It (book). He simultaneously recorded his fifth official studio album Nuclear Daydream in Berlin and Los Angeles, and released the album as the first on his own label in September 2006. Following the new album, Joseph set out on a worldwide tour, the first to feature his new backing band The Lonely Astronauts.

His song “In the Sun” was covered by Michael Stipe of R.E.M. and Chris Martin of Coldplay in 2006 for a Hurricane Katrina Relief EP (available exclusively on iTunes). The EP includes 6 versions of the cover, one of which has Arthur himself singing with Stipe, and another remixed by Justin Timberlake. On March 26, 2007, 14th Floor Records (Joseph’s label in the UK at the time) released a re-recorded version of his 2002 song “Honey and the Moon” as a special single in the UK only. April 17, 2007 saw the US release of his sixth studio album, Let’s Just Be, the first album recorded with his band The Lonely Astronauts. 16 of the reported 80 songs that he and the band recorded in late 2006 yielded the Let’s Just Be album (though it is uncertain whether the remaining 64 songs will ever see the light of day or not). A US tour followed the album’s release.

Joseph quickly started working on the follow-up to Let’s Just Be. In January 2008, it was announced that Joseph would be releasing 4 brand new EPs and one new full-length album throughout 2008, beginning with Could We Survive on March 18; the second EP, titled Crazy Rain, released on April 15; the third, titled Vagabond Skies, released on June 10; and the fourth, titled Foreign Girls, on July 8. Joseph played seven solo shows during the SXSW 2008 Festival: six in Austin and one in Dallas. Live dates in Europe and an extensive US solo tour coincided with the new releases. Temporary People, his seventh full-length studio album (and second with The Lonely Astronauts), was released on September 30, 2008. Following the release of Temporary People in Europe in late October, Joseph embarked on a solo tour, as the opening act for Tracy Chapman on her 6-week “Our Bright Future” European tour, followed by tour dates in Canada.

Arthur recorded a cover of “Step Into the Light” by The Afghan Whigs (originall on their 1996 album Black Love) for the tribute album Summer’s Kiss: A Tribute to The Afghan Whigs. UK tour dates with The Lonely Astronauts are set for late July 2009.

The Entertainments Committee have now bought almost all the new equipment we need to make a full PA (thanks Archie). We have replaced many core items and bought a new mixing desk, all new speakers, new mics, a multicore, amps and other rack equipment, and we still have a little money to spare to finish the job. Archie and Stu will be working on installation in the next month or so.

As the PA has been upgraded, a new set of hire fees will be in operation once the job is complete. You can see these on the PA hire page, which also has some info about hiring and using the equipment.

Nathan has also worked hard on the games room in the past month, which now has two pool tables, two snooker tables, table football, pinball, darts, dominoes, cards and a big-screen TV. The room is now really busy most weeknights, and we are really grateful to everyone who has supported the changes and is using the room regularly. (Pool is still 40p a game, and table football is also 40p!). There is also a brand new quiz machine in the Lounge bar. Please become a Friend of the Brudenell if you use these facilities - it only costs £3.20 when you join online via PayPal.

The third Bring and Buy (pie) sale will take place from 2pm-6pm on 28th January.

Entry is 25p.

All proceeds from the sale will go to the Brudenell PA fund/ practice room fund etc, and any left-over items will be donated to the Meningitis Trust.

Stalls will include the usual books, clothing, records, CDs, bric-a-brac and so on, and we will also have various art and craft stalls, cakes and pies (vegan and veggie), tea, smoothies, milkshakes, soup and a booze tombola! So come for your Sunday dinner and stick around afterwards.

We will also have an auction at around 4pm, hosted by Daniel Chapman, where we will be selling the best items that are donated. These will include a custom screenprinted duvet cover set featuring the Brudenell logo (from the t-shirts)- a totally one-off item.

We need helpers to set up and sort items from noon, look after a stall for a while, and to pack everything away at 6. Just turn up early if you want to be involved. The more people there are, the more fun it is, and the less work we will all have to do! Helpers also get first pick of the donations!!

Don’t forget to donate your items before the sale. For collection, please email bring-n-pie@brudenellsocialclub.co.uk.

PS. Before the sale, there is an Olsen event at the Hyde Park cinema - after the sale, there is a free gig at the Brudenell… see poster for info.

Last night we bought Moz and Stu’s PA with the first chunk of our lottery money, meaning that it is now totally owned by the Entertainments Committee. We will be buying even more equipment in the next couple of weeks, and discussing other uses for the rest of the money.

The money from New Years Eve has been split between C&R and the ents committee. £700 has been donated to Cops and Robbers, which will cover the debts and pay for another years’ printing. The Ents Committee money will be put towards one of the many things we need to work on - security for the room/ new practice room doors/ a backline/ insurance etc etc etc… to be decided.

Also, I forgot to post this yesterday, but there was a page in the Evening Post about us last night - I will scan it in and stick it on the site ASAP.

Happy New Year on behalf of the Entertainments Committee! We had an amazing party on Sunday which you can read about on the Cops and Robbers and Leeds Music Scene forums - also, have a look at Neil’s photos here. Thanks to everyone who came along, dressed up and joined in with the fun… especially the karaoke singers and the people who spent ages making their outfits… Barberella, Barry on Briggate, the Blackboard, the Beastie Boys and Bender were some of our faves.

You may have noticed that the progress meter on the right-hand-side of this page has jumped from 19% from 86%!! That’s because we have received the £10,000 Awards For All/ National Lottery funding and will be buying Moz and Stu’s PA this week. After that, we will be adding now equipment to really bring the PA up to speed with other venues in the city. The last few pounds will hopefully trickle in from our Bring and Buy sale in 28th January, and a PA launch night sometime in late Spring. Watch this space!

Release Date – 19th December 2006

CHRISTMAS CHEERS IN HYDE PARK AS SOCIAL CLUB AND MUSIC VENUE RECEIVES £10,000 LOTTO AWARD

The future of a social club in Hyde Park which acts as a vital part of the Leeds music scene looks safe after an application for £10,000 of lottery money was successful.

The Brudenell Social Club, which has hosted gigs by Leeds heroes The Kaiser Chiefs, as well as indie superstars Franz Ferdinand and hundreds of local, national and international acts, urgently needs a new £15,000 PA system, in order to compete with other local venues, while remaining independent and affordable.

The Brudenell Entertainments Committee, a volunteer organisation attached to the Social Club, have been awarded a £10,000 grant from the lottery funding organisation Awards for All. The grant will be paid to the Committee on Christmas Day.

The group will raise the remaining £5000 needed themselves, through gigs, bring and buy sales and a New Years Eve party.

Many users of the Club work on a non-profit basis and rely on the Brudenell as an affordable space to showcase left-field music and arts events in Leeds.

The Committee also plan to soundproof a back room to provide band rehearsal space. The volunteers will be offering workshops on events management and sound engineering.

The Committee has been working for 18 months on fundraising to secure the future of the Brudenell. In early 2005, noise complaints threatened the future of the Club, and the Committee raised more than £7000 in 2005 for soundproofed fire doors.

Councillor James Monaghan (Lib Dem, Headingley) supported the application:

“I am glad to have played a small part in the bid that will benefit the music scene in Leeds and local community organisations.

“The Brudenell Social Club Entertainments Committee have put a huge amount of work into seeing this project come to fruition and they should be praised for their efforts.”

On New Years Eve the Committee will be holding a party to celebrate the grant, with live music/ entertainment/ DJs. Tickets £5 from the Brudenell bar or Jumbo records, entry by ticket only.

ENDS

NOTES TO EDITORS

The Brudenell Social Club was formed in 1913 as a working men’s club, and has changed drastically over the years, adapting to the changing demographic of the area. It is now an extremely popular live music venue, but has retained its’ status as a non-profit members Club.

The Brudenell’s profile was raised in 2004 when Franz Ferdinand played a secret gig at the venue. It has also hosted gigs for the Kaiser Chiefs and The Cribs as well as hundreds of local artists. The venue still hosts more traditional cabaret nights and private parties.

After the initial fundraising for firedoors, the venue was again threatened in late 2005 when the in-house PA, owned by local sound engineers, was due to be sold. They set a £15,000 target to replace and upgrade the PA so that the Brudenell would be able to compete with other venues while continuing to be affordable and independent.

Ents Committee core members:
Claire Broadley – local resident, musician, promoter. Mature student.
Jonny Ackroyd – local resident, ex-promoter. Disability support worker.
Neil Shumsky – local resident, musician, ex- promoter. Software engineer.
Stuart Bannister – local resident, musician, sound engineer at the venue. Library assistant.
