The term 'Cantenna' originally referred to a product sold by Heathkit Co. in Benton Harbor, MI, USA. It was a 50-ohm resistive load used by radio amateurs.[1] However, in the more casual vernacular of the Do-It-Yourself community, it has functionally become a portmanteau of can (e.g. an empty Pringles can, see below) and antenna, since they're used to broadcast (and receive) signals, and not just terminate them.

Although some designs are based on a Pringles potato chip can, in reality this tube is too narrow to be practical.[2], however a cantenna can be made from various cans or tubes of an appropriate diameter.[3] Some designs include a pole mount to elevate the cantenna.[4]

While cantennas are useful for extending a wireless local area network (WLAN), the tiny design makes them ideal for mobile applications such as wardriving. The design of the cantenna is so simple that it is often the first antenna WiFi experimenters learn to build. Cantennas can even be used to increase cell phone range,[5] improve reception and decrease noise.

Seems like MSI has put a lot of effort with the GT660 — not just with the hardware specifications but with the design and the audio system as well. Check out the full review of the MSI GT660 after the jump and see if it’s worth the Php110,000 price tag.

The GT660 is just huge and for a 16-inch notebook, it’s just heavy (7.7lbs) and is like a beast of a laptop. It may not be as cool-looking as an Alienware M17x but it’s got some design inspiration from the latter with all that chiseled corners. Even the lid cover reminded me of the Mazda 3′s hood.

Open up the lid and you’d be greeted with an extended keyboard that includes an alpha-numeric keypad on the right side. It’s a nice addition but if you’re a regular laptop-user, the orientation is confusing that you always tend to hit the wrong keys when typing. One needs some time to get used to the extra keys and learn to familiarize where the Enter button is.
The chiclet-type keys are appropriately sized with special color labels on the gaming keys (asdw) and the arrow keys.

And while it’s glossy black on the outside, it’s rough and textured in the inside — the palm rest has this honeycomb finish and the trackpad feels like sand-paper and is somewhat flushed to the left. The left and right click buttons are not separated but shaped accordingly to differentiate the two.

Above the keyboard are light indicators with the power button in the center. On both sides are two huge stereo speakers powered by Dynaudio. The speakers are impressive, offering good sound volume to appreciate movie playback even at a distance. The audio quality is somewhere between good to great with a strong, deep bass and probably is the best laptop speakers I’ve tried so far.

The 16-inch display is bright and crisp with a maximum resolution of 1366×768 pixels (I was actually expecting it could be higher, somewhere in the 1600×1200 range, because of the large real estate). The glossy display is also prone to glare in the outdoors and against bright light sources.

The MSI GT660 is powered by Intel’s Core i7 720QM with 4 cores and 8 threads that runs at a base clock speed of 1.6GHz for each core but can boost up to 2.8GHz. This chip is among the most powerful processors to be fitted in a laptop.
Couple that with an nVidia GeForce GTX 285M with 1GB GDDR3 VRAM, 6GB of DDR3 memory and you get a beast of a gaming machine. The GT660 is also the very first notebook I’ve seen that sports two (2) hard disk drives — it has two 500GB HDD for a total of 1 terabyte (would be interesting if it can do Raid 0/1 here). Windows Experience Index gives it a base score of 5.9 due to the HDD but the CPU got a sub-score of 7.0 and the graphics got a 6.9 sub-score. Posted PassMark performance test here but the WEI should be enough to compare with your own rig.

As expected, battery life suffers from all the power requirements. Even with a high-capacity 9-cell (7800mAh) Li-Ion battery, the notebook only lasts just over 2 hours on a single full charge (as indicated by BatteryBar in the screenshot above).
As a desktop replacement and gaming rig, I reckon you’d always be plugging this notebook to a power outlet so battery life isn’t a big issue for a laptop in this category although I can appreciate MSI’s effort to put in a 9-cell battery here.

To make it more interesting, MSI retrofitted several red lights around the notebook to make it look meaner (front and side as well as the edges of the lid) but forgot to include a backlit keyboard.
The MSI GT660 has a premium price tag of Php109,990 but the specs of this gaming rig is very impressive to somewhat justify that. It’s not your regular multimedia notebook and this kind of combination is hard to come by.

The cable is 5m long and has an RP-SMA male connector on one end (which is used to connect to devices such as PCI and USB wireless adapters that have RP-SMA antenna ports on them) and a standard N male connector on the other end. We recommend this extension cable compared to some others online because this has a special low-loss cable. What does this mean? The antenna to which you will connect this has a gain. Dual band 802.11n WiFi from Alfa Networks is here! This is the Alfa AWUS051NH wireless 802.11a/b/g/n USB adapter. If your speed is between 65 and 150 mbps, you have an 802.11n connection, but you can likely improve the speed by putting your router into N-only mode, and adjusting between the 20 and 40 MHz band in your router settings. Also keep in mind that connection speeds will be lower as the distance between the router and adapter are greater. Your router has as much to do with your connection speed as this WiFi adapter so if you are not achieving desired connection speeds please contact us with you router brand and model for suggestions on what to do.

More about dual-band networking:

Dual band 802.11n wireless networking offers some advantages that single band 802.11n networking cannot, but there are some requirements and limitations. For starters, to take advantage of the dual-band capabilities of this or any 802.11n dual-band adapter, you must also have a dual-band 802.11n wireless router to which you are connecting. If you are connected to a single band 802.11n router, or an 802.11g router, you will not be able to utilize the 5 GHz functionality this product offers.

-When to use 5 GHz-

Many dual-band 802.11n routers will let you broadcast two network signals simultaneously, one 2.4 GHz signal and a separate 5 GHz signal. The 2.4 GHz band offers slower speeds, but can transmit over a further distance and penetrate obstacles better. The 5 Ghz band offers great speed improvement, but is not able to transmit as far.

· Use 5 GHz to stream video or transfer files from your router to your computer when in the same room as the router (or relatively close by)
· Use 2.4 GHz when you need to get a connection from further away
· Using 5 Ghz allows optimal 802.11n speed performances. Simultaneously running a 2.4 GHz signal will allow older 802.11g devices in your home to still connect to your wireless network.
· Use 5 GHz in a small apartment in a city area where there are a lot of 2.4 GHz networks in operation, creating lots of interference

Some dual band 802.11n routers, such as the early versions of the Apple Time Capsule, do not support simultaneous networks and require you to choose to broadcast either a 2.4 GHz signal or a 5 GHz signal. Note that when running a 5 GHz-only signal on these types of devices, older 802.11g or 802.11b devices will not be able to connect to it. In that case, if 5 GHz connectivity is desired, it is recommended to get one of these dual band Alfa devices for each compatible device in your home. This way they can all connect at 5 GHz.

This is a 7 dBi gain rubber duck antenna for use with wireless adapters that have an RP-SMA connector on them. Many PCI and some USB adapters have this type of device. The 1000mw USB adapter from Alfa we sell here on this web site has an RP-SMA connector and this is compatible with that adapter.

This is a 16 unit directional yagi antenna. It comes with mounting equipment as shown. This antenna is ideal for outdoor mounting and includes a short built-in cable with RP-SMA male antenna connector. Most likely you will need a longer cable to be able to use this outdoors, and we recommend our Alfa low-loss shielded 5m extension cable.

Directional antennas concentrate gain in one particular direction and can do a better job at piercing obstacles in a particular direction, providing you with better distance and signal. A directional antenna does not need to be pointed in the precise direction of a signal, just in the general direction. This illustration demonstrates the proper way to mount a yagi directional antenna. Note that the antenna can also be mounted in the same outward direction but so the lobes are parallel to the ground. You do not want to have the antenna pointing directly upward or downward though, as that will negatively impact performance.

Because of the way these antennas are designed, we do not recommend using them indoors. The yagi antenna should have some open area between it and the very first obstacle between the antenna and the source AP. If you place the yagi right up against an obstacle, that will also negatively impact performance. A trial-and-error process may be necessary to determine the optimal location and position.

1. I just hooked this up to the WiFi adapter by my computer, and I see fewer networks than my factory 5 dBi antenna that came with my WiFi adapter. Is my antenna defective?

There are two issues at play here. One is that your factory antenna is omni directional, while this antenna is directional. This means this antenna will concentrate gain in the direction in which is pointed, resulting in better range and signal in that direction. While it can pick up from other directions in which it is not pointed, the distance will be limited and signals will be weak. Your factory omni may pick up more total Aps, but this antenna should pick up stronger signals in the direction it is pointed. The other issue has to do with positioning. Using this antenna indoors on your desk pointed out a window is not an optimal place to have it. This was designed to be mounted outdoors in a very open area. Not only will this give you the added benefit of not having your building walls as an obstacle to the connection, it will also allow the antenna to perform much better as well.

2. Is this weatherproof?

It is weather resistant. It can be used outdoors and exposed to some elements. We do not recommend long term exposure to extreme temperatures, or immersion in water.

3. On an auction web site I saw a Yagi advertised as 20 dBi gain coming from Hong Kong cheaper than this one, what gives?

Gain is commonly inflated by sellers because it cannot be easily measured by end users. This is why you can get a "18 dBi gain" dipole antenna on some auction web sites that is the same size as a 7 dBi dipole antenna for just $4.00 from Hong Kong sellers. When it comes to any type of Wi-Fi device, the reputation of the seller matters a great deal. Before you take the plunge on a Wi-Fi kit showing a Wi-Fi adapter with "4000mW" of output power and a dipole antenna with "24 dBi gain" all for $20.00, remember you get what you pay for. Our antennas are carefully built and tested to specs. We could advertise this as a 20 or 22 dBi gain antenna if we wanted to I suppose, but our reputation is our business, and our advertisements include only correct specs.

If you are reading this, be sure you are aware of the slight difference in the model of the Alfa AWUS036NH as compared to the AWUS036H.

The NH version is the cousin to the famous Alfa AWUS036H. Although on paper the NH's 2000mW Transmitter Output Power seems impressive and should be able to outperform the original H - it's actually quite the opposite in my opinion. Also, many people have said that this adapter is not as great as it seems and had a lot of compatibility issues.

It is an updated version of the original Alfa AWUS036H and although professional tests have shown the NH version to have phenomenal range, typical users (such as you and I) have said that there were too many problems. Click Here to See More.

I personally do not recommend the NH as since a friend of mine purchased it thinking he could "beat" me in the wireless range test. It didn't work out too well for him I should say. It's one of the reason why I state in my review here that the H will be able to stand the technological test of time.

It is still a great adapter, but don't let the 2000mW be the only thing blinding you to buy this. My friend wishes he could return it and get the 1000mW AWUS036H version, but maybe in due time Alfa will release better drivers for this adapter since as of current there is a lot of compability issues with this NH model because most wireless routers are set up for wireles B/G anyways. N routers are virtually unused except by those who MUST have the latest and greatest.

The Alfa AWUS036H is the ultimate USB Wifi card and it is everything that you imagine it to be. This wifi card is the most sensitive card you can get and the range at which it can detect other wireless networks is astonishing.

I’m not going to go into all the technical stuff about this card, to be honest I don’t need to. All you have to know is it will boost the number of bars for your wireless connection. You don’t have to worry about why you can’t connect to your wireless router that’s on the other side of the house. No more worrying about any kind of interference that causes signal loss. If you have a clear line of site to your router, this thing can detect it from literally a mile or more away (some reviewers tests have proven this!).

You will still find basic tools for cropping, minor cleanup, red eye removal and even a cloning tool. The Quick Fix tool is where most people start in Photoshop Elements 9. This lets you apply basic edits like color and lighting adjustments with one click. A preview window displays a before and after comparison of the image prior to actually applying the correction.

A project wizard is available to walk you through creating custom projects like photo books, calendars, greeting cards and photo slide shows.
Photoshop Elements 9 photo editing software has advanced selection tools that allow you to extract portions of a photo and insert that clipping into another shot. Also, the High Pass Filter can be used to extract line art and large black and white portions from scanned images.

If you have taken several shots of a scenic view, you can use Photomerge to combine the shots into one perfect image. You can also combine a series of individual shots to create a panoramic image.
The Recompose tool is another fantastic and recently added feature in Photoshop Elements 9 photo editing software. This lets you resize photos without losing important visual elements like people or buildings. Normally when scaling an image, the result includes squatty or lengthened objects in the photo. Recompose identifies important objects in the shot and scales everything around them, resulting in a resized image with correctly proportioned objects.
People Recognition is a fascinating tool in Photoshop Elements 9. The Auto Analyzer automatically tags images that contain faces. Once this process is complete, you can begin identifying people in the photos. The program will learn what people look like and will start making suggestions about who is in each photo. Eventually it will actually find groups of photos of a particular person and allow you to batch tag them to save time.
