Buena Park Library is breaking out, even further, into the social media universe! Today, we posted our first photo on Instagram. If you are not familiar with Instagram, it is a social media platform built primarily for mobile devices. With Instagram, we will be able share photos and videos from our programs and events as they happen!

Catch ‘Em All: Pokemon GO at the Buena Park Library

I’m sure you’ve all heard about the latest rage in mobile apps…Pokémon GO. It’s an updated version of the classic Pokémon game where you attempt to catch Pokémon (a play on the words, Pocket Monsters) and battle for domination. The game uses a Google Maps like interface that takes you out into the real world to find Pokémon. There are also Pokéstops, where you can collect Pokéballs (needed to catch your Pokémon) and gain XP (experience) to level up.

Pokémon GO is available free to download for iOS (8+) and Android (4.4 to 6.0.1). For the most part, the game is free to play. There are some options to purchase items within the game, so watch out for that if you want to keep your gaming experience a free one!

Also, in case you haven’t already heard, the Buena Park Library has two Pokéstops, so stock up on those Pokéballs on your next visit to the library. You can never have too many Pokéballs or Pokémon!

Teen and Adult Summer Reading

The theme for teens this summer is “Get in the game. Read.”

Teens and adults, sign up for our summer reading program, and get prizes throughout the summer for reading. To get started, simply pick up a log at the library. You’ll get prizes along the way and might even win one of our grand prizes. Teen grand prizes are a Kindle Fire, tickets to Knott’s Berry Farm, and tickets to Six Flags. The adult grand prize is a Kindle Fire. Our summer reading program won’t last forever, so pick up a log today!

The theme for adults this summer is “Exercise your mind. Read!”

Children’s Summer Reading Kickoff

Mark your calendars! The children’s summer reading program kickoff will be on Saturday, June 4, from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Come join us for games, crafts, a petting zoo, and fun. And, of course, this will be the first chance for your little readers to pick up their reading logs and start reading.

We will have a petting zoo at this year’s kickoff. Yay!

Also during the summer we will have children’s afternoon clubs and special performances featuring magicians, musicians, balloon twisting, animals, and more for the whole family. Stop by to pick up a monthly calendar to stay updated on all that’s happening this summer at the library.

Fun for Teens

If you’re a teen, then check out Teen Tuesday Night, held every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. At Teen Tuesday Night, you can play games (video, board, and card), make crafts, eat snacks, and meet new friends. You can also bring your homework and study if you want to.

Here are the crafts we have scheduled for the month of April:
April 5: Japanese and garden themed coloring
April 12: Watercolor painting
April 19: Make and eat candy sushi
April 26: Make your own mini garden

Also, our teen librarian is a sewing pro, and she whips out the sewing machine sometimes. If you’re interested in learning how to use a sewing machine, then check our calendar in coming months for sewing related crafts.

No registration is necessary. Just come!

Buena Park Reads 2016

Our sixth annual Buena Park Reads is underway. Every year we read one book together as a community. This year’s selection is Gail Tsukiyama’s The Samurai’s Garden, a poignant story set in 1930s Japan.

Stephen is a young Chinese painter who goes to his family’s summer home in a Japanese coastal village to recover from tuberculosis. There, he meets Matsu, a master gardener, and Sachi, a beautiful woman with leprosy, who change his life profoundly.

Be a part of this communal reading experience by reading this year’s selection (we have several copies at the library) and then joining us for one of our book discussion meetings in April.

Read to Me A-Z

Parents, have you heard of Read to Me A-Z? Read to Me A-Z is a reading program for children ages zero to six. Read a picture book to your child for every letter of the alphabet according to the first letter of the author’s last name (you can read any book for letters Q and X). When you have finished reading through the alphabet, your child will get a small prize, and you will be entered into a drawing for four Knott’s Berry Farm tickets.

Read to Me A-Z reading logs are available for pick up in the children’s room. The program will end on February 29, so pick up your log soon!

Adult Coloring Club Coming in 2016

We’re excited to announce a new club for adults: the first meeting of our adult coloring club will be on Thursday, January 7, 2016, at 2:00 p.m.

Join us on the first Thursday of each month for a time of relaxation, conversation, and creativity. All supplies will be provided. Just bring yourself, and enjoy the afternoon creating works of art.

Did you know that you can download and keep issues of your favorite magazines for free with your library card? It sounds too good to be true, but it isn’t! Your Buena Park Library card gives you access to more than 130 popular magazines, including Glamour, Car and Driver, Food Network Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, ESPN, Newsweek, Forbes, Men’s Health, Popular Photography, Yoga Journal, O: The Oprah Magazine, and more.

The magazines are available through the library’s subscription to Zinio. Anyone with a Buena Park Library card can sign up for Zinio and start reading immediately on a smartphone, tablet, or computer. Readers who will be reading on a smartphone or tablet will need to download the free Zinio for Libraries app on their device.

Are You Prepared for an Earthquake?

California is considered to be at high risk for a large earthquake. How we prepare or fail to prepare now will determine our quality of life after our next large earthquake.

The library will participate in the Great California ShakeOut on Thursday, October 15, at 10:15 a.m. The Great California ShakeOut is an annual drill with millions of participants across the state. During the drill, everyone inside the library building will be asked to drop, cover, and hold on. We will then evacuate the building, and library service will be interrupted but will resume shortly thereafter.

You could be anywhere when an earthquake strikes: at home, at work, at school, or even on vacation. Please take steps to prepare yourself and your family for an earthquake wherever you may be. For more information about earthquake preparedness, visit earthquakecountry.org/sevensteps/.
