Nikola Mirotic, the Bulls "rookie" who is far from your average NBA rookie, is turning heads early in training camp, according to the Bulls' (with all due respect to newcomer Pau Gasol) "Big Three" - Tom Thibodeau, Joakim Noah, and Derrick Rose.

For those of you who have been living under a rock for the past three years, the name Nikola Mirotic has become synonymous with "mixed attitudes" since he was drafted by the Bulls in the first round of the 2011 NBA Draft.

Bulls fans have described him with comparisons ranging from Dirk Nowitzki to Darko Milicic.

Some believe he will barely play season, while some expect the Bulls to trade Taj Gibson to clear playing time for the 23-year-old who has been All-Euroleague and ACB (Spanish League) Most Valuable Player over the last two seasons.

His first time on the Bulls' practice floor seems to have impressed the most important people in the Bulls' organization.

Veteran NBA referee Dick Bavetta has announced his retirement.

The official NBA press release:

NEW YORK, August 19, 2014 – NBA President, Basketball Operations Rod Thorn announced today that longtime NBA referee Dick Bavetta will be retiring after 39 years of service.

Bavetta, who began his NBA career on Dec. 2, 1975, at Madison Square Garden in a game between the New York Knicks and the Boston Celtics finished with a record 2,635 consecutive regular season games officiated, having never missed an assigned game throughout his entire career. Bavetta also officiated 270 Playoff games including 27 Finals games.

“Dick’s dedication and commitment to his craft has been an inspiration to all NBA officials,” said Thorn. “We are grateful for his contributions to our league, and we wish him the best as he enjoys his well-earned retirement.”

Bavetta worked three NBA All-Star Games (1989, 1995 and 2006) and was the first NBA referee selected to officiate the 1992 Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona. Bavetta also refereed the 1997 McDonald’s Championship in Paris, 1993 Mexico Challenge and 1990 Japan Games in Tokyo.

“On behalf of myself and the entire Bavetta family, I would like to thank the NBA family and the National Basketball Referee Association for allowing me the honor and the privilege of representing them for 39 wonderful years,” said Bavetta.

Prior to joining the NBA, Bavetta was an official with the Eastern League (CBA) for nine years, as well as the Rucker League, FIBA, Jersey Shore Basketball League, and both the Public and Catholic High School leagues in New York City.

Bullsville.net is currently looking for talented writers to join the Bullsville Network. This is not a volunteer position, you will be paid for each article you write.

Your pay is based on the number of views that each article receives, which means if you can bring traffic to the site to read your articles, you will make even more money.

Write as often as you want, about any subject you want (as long as it pertains to the Bulls or the NBA in general).

This is the perfect job for students hoping for a career in journalism - and unlike most web sites who expect you to write for free just to get your name out there and get experience, here at Bullsville we believe you should be paid for your work.

After all, if you bring readers to Bullsville.net, the site makes more money, so why shouldn't you receive some ot that revenue?

If you are interested, send an email to don@bullsville.net and I will get back with you ASAP with all the details.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in the email you send.
You forgot ugly, lazy and disrespectful. - John Bender, "The Breakfast Club".

Yes, I'm a huge fan of "The Breakfast Club". I'm assuming that many of my readers are as well - it was set in Chicago, after all. While there are thousands and thousands of Bulls fans who don't live in Chicagoland, there are lots and lots of Breakfast Club fans all over the world, and odds are that some of them are also Bulls fans.

Bullsville is the home of the intelligent Chicago Bulls fan - it started out as a catch-phrase, but it has become reality. I am truly humbled when I read the comments to my articles, because they are so... intelligent. Seriously, I am honored to reply to the comments I read, because they often challenge me and make me do more research on the subjects I write about.

Where am I headed with all this? To the other end of the spectrum. I'm sure my readers also read other Bulls blogs/websites/message boards. I know I do. And like my loyal readers, it bothers the hell out of me to read stuff written by complete idiots. By Bulls fans who are "stupid, worthless, no good, retarded, big mouth, know-it-alls" who do nothing but spread lies about the team I love all over the internet.

They type stuff that other innocent, unknowing Bulls fans might believe, not because they are stupid, but because they don't know any better. Guys (and some girls, of course) who are just becoming serious Bulls fans read their ignorance and believe it, because nobody is there to give them the facts. The truth. The real story.

I'm sure some of my readers are also readers and/or posters at the busiest Bulls site on the internet, the RealGM.com Bulls message boards. A Bulls fan who is looking to discuss the team online would likely Google "Chicago Bulls discussion" or "Chicago Bulls message board" or "Chicago Bulls forum" - and the top search result would be the same.

Today's winner of the "Stupid, Retarded, Big Mouth, Know-It-All Bulls fan" award is a RealGM member who goes by the handle HomoSapien. This is what he had to say about the Bulls today:

I've been extremely vocal over the years about the Bulls inability to make trades. They are downright terrible at them. I know some of you are dying to point out the McDermott trade, or the Eddy Curry trade that happened nearly a decade ago now, but let's be more nuanced than that. The Bulls aren't able to trade for established talents.
They're great at making trades for picks or ones that help them out financially, but they're probably worst in the league at actually acquiring established talent.
Well we haven't made any trades for established talent, so by default we are last. It's not very hard to argue.
And to be clear, I'm not talking about trades for super stars. Just guys who can immediately help you.

Apparently, this HomoSapien person wasn't paying attention to these trades that the Bulls have made since John Paxson became GM:

December 1, 2003: Traded Jalen Rose and others for Antonio Davis and others.
August 5, 2004: Traded Jamal Crawford and others for Othella Harrington and others.
February 18, 2009: Traded Andres Nocioni and others for Brad Miller and John Salmons.

Antonio Davis, Brad Miller, John Salmons and to a lesser extent Othella Harrington all "immediately helped" the Bulls.

Davis was a starter, and Harrington a key reserve, on the 2004-05 Bulls team that won 47 games and earned the Bulls' first playoff berth since the breakup of the dynasty team.

Miller and Salmons were added to a 25-30 team and were crucial to the team going 16-11 down the stretch, helping to lead them to a playoff berth and the epic 7-game, 7 overtime first round series against the Celtics.

Every fan of every team is more than welcome to express their opinion. However, someone who is a Forum Moderator on the busiest Chicago Bulls message board in the world should have enough brains to get simple FACTS correct.

So congratulations, HomoSapien, on being named the 1st ever winner of the Bullsville "Stupid, Retarded, Big Mouth, Know-It-All Bulls fan" award.

You most certainly earned it with that stunning display of ignorance.

EDIT, Saturday, July 5th, 12:05 AM CT:

I had to edit this article after what I just read.

A RealGM poster named DaeDae was obviously quite jealous that HomoSapien was the 1st ever winner of the Bullsville "Stupid, Retarded, Big Mouth, Know-It-All Bulls fan" award, because he had to jump in and show how incredibly stupid he is just a few hours after I published this article.

Just to prove I am not making anything up, here's the link to DaeDae's genius comment in the same thread that HomoSapien created in search of his "idiot" award - DaeDae's jealous streak gives us intelligent Bulls fans an incredible laugh

We traded for a draft pick and got lucky when joakim Noah a) didn't come out the year before, and b) fell to us in the draft. Had the kings taken him instead of Spencer hawes

Just in case you don't feel like looking it up, the 2007 NBA draft went like this:

CHI - 9th pick - Joakim Noah
SAC - 10th pick- Spencer Hawes

So yes, apparently somehow, the NBA draft allows teams to move up a spot in the draft, just jumping right over the team that is supposed to draft in that slot.

I have to admit, I had never heard of that rule until tonight. Thanks DaeDae for letting me know about a rule whose existence I had no clue of.

See, that's why I still read RealGM, for knowledge like that!!

So I'm forced to edit my previous award, and congratulate HomoSapien and DaeDae for being co-winners of the 1st Bullsville "Stupid, Retarded, Big Mouth, Know-It-All Bulls fan" award!!

BULLSVILLE.NET

The Arron Afflalo Bulls era is possibly less than a month from beginning. Afflalo is an absolute perfect fit for the Bulls, for several reasons:

He is a very accomplished defender

At 6'5", 215 pounds, he has good size for a shooting guard

He is an outstanding 3-point shooter (over the last six seasons, he has shot .402, .434, .423, .398, .300 and .427 from behind the arc)

He has a very reasonable salary ($7.5 million this season)

He has 5 postseasons worth of playoff experience

An Arron Afflalo Bulls marriage would give the team a shooting guard who is leaps and bounds better than any they have employed during the Tom Thibodeau era. Not that being decidedly better than the likes of Keith Bogans, Ronnie Brewer and Rip Hamilton is anything to write home about, but Afflalo is a combination of the best of qualities of those players.

He defends better than all of them, he is a better 3-point shooter than all of them, and even his mid-range game was outstanding last season. Afflalo shot 50.9% from 10-16 feet last season, and 42.0% from 16-23 feet.

Read the entire article on The Bullsville Blog

Melo as a free agent AND trade for Love? Bulls can do it

BULLSVILLE.NET

Can the Bulls sign Carmelo Anthony as a free agent (without a sign and trade) and then have enough assets left to trade for Kevin Love?

A reader sent me that question (kudos to Jay Sparkz)but when he asked, it was with the attached condition that Melo sign for the same salary as Derrick Rose (who will make $18,862,876 in 2014-15). That answer is... well, I can't tell you in the second paragraph, where's the fun in that? I'd rather explain the reasons on the way.

To start, we'll assume that Rose and/or Joakim Noah won't be dumped to sign Melo, and they won't be traded for Love. I wouldn't consider either move, and most Bulls fans wouldn't, either.

The Bulls will have to send out a minimum of $12,495,250 in order to absorb Kevin Love's salary in a trade. And they are required to have 12 players on the roster during the summer- every empty roster spot incurs a charge of $507,336 (the rookie minimum salary) against the salary cap.

The current estimate is that the salary cap will be $63.2 million next season (according to Larry Coon). If the Bulls sign Melo for $18,862,876 next season, while keeping Noah and Rose, that's a combined $55,325,110 in salary (that total includes the $334,000 cap charge for the last year of Rip Hamilton's buyout).

BULLSVILLE.NET

Mario Chalmers was called for a flagrant foul with 6:43 left in the 4th quarter of the Heat's 98-96 Game Two victory that tied the Finals at one game apiece.

While the Mario Chalmers flagrant foul wasn't a turning point in the game (unless you count the Spurs missing four consecutive free throws on the ensuing possession which could have taken a two point lead up to six), the point is that is absolutely should have been called a flagrant foul 2, for which Chalmers would have been ejected from the game.

The definition of a flagrant foul, from NBA.com:

These fouls are considered unnecessary and/or excessive. There are two types of flagrant fouls, 1 and 2. A flagrant 1 is unnecessary contact. This is usually when a defensive player swings and makes hard contact with the offensive player or makes hard contact and then follows through. A flagrant foul 2 is unnecessary and excessive contact. This usually has a swinging motion, hard contact, and a follow through. Both fouls carry a penalty of two free throws and the team that was fouled retains possession. A flagrant foul 2 also results in an ejection of the player committing the foul. A player also is ejected if he commits two flagrant foul penalty 1’s.

Chalmers certainly threw the elbow in a swinging motion, and there was most definitely hard contact. It was intentional and blatant contact that had nothing to do with attempting to make a basketball play.

From the NBA's Official Rulebook, Rule 12B-Section IV :

b. If contact committed against a player, with or without the ball, is interpreted to be
unnecessary and excessive, a flagrant foul—penalty (2) will be assessed. A personal foul is
charged to the offender and a team foul is charged to the team.

It's obvious from watching the video that the Mario Chalmers flagrant foul was "unnecessary and excessive"- he was already past Parker with the dribble, and he blatantly and maliciously threw an elbow backwards and hit Parker in the ribs.

I don't really expect the league to review the Mario Chalmers flagrant foul, and even if they do, I don't expect them to change anything regarding the call. Leave a comment if you agree with me that this should have been called a flagrant foul 2.
I guess to the untrained eye, it makes sense that the team that spends the most money on players and pays the NBA luxury tax will have the best team. After all, the best players make the most money, so if your team spends the most money, they should have more good players, right?

Wrong.

100%, absolutely, positively, wrong.

It's a myth. An untruth. A fallacy.

Having the highest payroll in the NBA only guarantees that your team won't be accused of being cheap.

Bulls avoid luxury tax is not really news, since it has been widely reported for over two months that the team would almost certainly stay under the tax threshold as soon as Erik Murphy was claimed by the Utah Jazz after the Bulls waived him.

But for some strange reason, the overwhelming majority of Bulls fans still believe that avoiding the tax was the team's number one priority after Derrick Rose suffered another season-ending knee injury. While ignorance of the law is no excuse, it is simply inexcusable for a Bulls fan to not realize that the team actually tried to pay the tax this season. Read the entire article at ChicagoNow.

Please pardon the mess

As you can see, Bullsville.net has really grown over the last week or so, and I am still working out the kinks.
