I have just reviewed Mark Joyner's book "Simpleology: The Simple Science of Getting What You Want" on my Business Books Review Blog and while I am a fan of Mark Joyner, the book was a bit of a struggle. Strangely I believe that Mark Joyner wrote the Simpleology in a way that would interest, amaze, confound and baffle the reader deliberately to put over one simple point. Taking control of your life is not a spectator sport. You have to be ready to take actions, to decide what you want and then go out and get it. Reading a book is nice but too often nothing happens. Mark Joyner wants you to take up the offer of the free Simpleology 101 course to help you to re-program you brain the right way based on the five laws of Simpleology. Watch this video posted on YouTube by one of Mark's affiliates...<div class="feedflare">

Sorry about the absence of book reviews recently. I have slipped into the irritating habit of starting but not finishing books. This is unlike me because I hate wasted effort. I'll normally either decide that a book is a complete waste of space and I'm not going to struggle on with it or that the book is well worth reading. If you remember I set up the separate Business Book Review Blog because I felt that the book reviews were crowding out the tips and advice articles so how wrong was I? The last book review compendium was published on 16th April so here are the book reviews since then. Full Book Reviews Turning Your Business Around - Mark Blayney - 4.5 Stars - excellent guide for companies that find themselves in financial difficulty. Easy to read and practical. Business Health Check - Carol O'Connor - 3 Stars - nice...<div class="feedflare">

I have recently read and reviewed "The Chic Entrepreneur: Put Your Business In Higher Heels" by Elizabeth Gordon and Leanna Adams (see my Chic Entrepreneur review) which is a step by step guide for female entrepreneurs. It is a very good book but what really hit home was the power of the stories which Elizabeth and Leanna make to illustrate their key points. Each story is beautifully crafted and presents a comparison between a business success and business failure and mediocrity. I do recommend that you buy "The Chic Entrepreneur" book but I really want to talk about the power of marketing stories to connect with your prospective customers and to pull them in and involve them. The Power of Story Marketing Too much marketing is dull, boring and misses out any emotional involvement and connection with the reader, the listener or the watcher. Even worse, a lot of marketing...<div class="feedflare">

One of the most successful bloggers and the leading teacher/trainer/coach of the skills of business blogging for profit is Yaro Starak and I am pleased to say that he is re-opening his Blog Mastermind program. I signed up for the last program which started in December 2007 and while Taro upset me with his blunt message that effectively said "forget Typepad, you must have a Wordpress blog" he has given me lots of tips that have helped push my Business Coaching blog forward. I have not implemented everything yet. The course comes with a weekly lesson and that means that when you are busy, it is easy to fall behind but it's no problem. Even after the course ends, Yaro keeps you in the program so you still get access to all the information. Blog Profits Blueprint Forget about the course for a moment.
I am reading Elizabeth Gordon's book "The Chic Entrepreneur" after a reminder comment and email from Elizabeth yesterday and I've just been jolted. On page 90 Elizabeth writes "women-only businesses yield much lower profits than those owned by men." Now I know that men are better drivers than women and better chefs than women but it had never occurred to me that men were better at business. (Just joking ladies, what good is a car driver who is incapable of stopping and asking for directions.) A very quick Google search has revealed that Elizabeth could be right. A small business entrepreneur profiles report by the government of Canada (see here) reveals that male owned businesses yield nearly double the profit of female owned businesses. This appears to be mainly because men build bigger businesses with revenues 110% higher in male owned businesses. This is interesting. It is also at odds...<div class="feedflare">

He has been writing "The Complete Guide To Highly Successful Internet Joint Venture Partnerships." Interesting. Very interesting. Rich Schefren has built much of his success based on joint ventures and I remember the teleseminar series he did with Stephen Pierce and Jay Abraham a few years ago that pulled in an amazing amount of money. Rich says it is "The only A-to-Z marketing manual that takes you behind the velvet rope to break down every facet of JV partnering into quick... easy-to-digest bites." Have I read? No. Do I want to read it? Yes. I consider joint ventures a critical element in the marketing of small businesses.
