Let Freedom Ring: The Return of Unrestricted International Travel

For those of you who have waited patiently to enjoy traveling freely from one nation to another—unrestricted, uninhibited, and unregulated—your time of liberation has finally come. As of June 12, 2022 at 12:01 AM, all pandemic-era restrictions for US citizens returning from international travel have been lifted!

This announcement is a huge step in the right direction to ensure the freedoms for which America was founded upon. It is also a critical pivot for the travel industry—one that has been hit hardest by the pandemic that left millions globally without jobs and nearly wiped out an entire sector of commerce. The two-year restrictions on travel have left families without paychecks, businesses without employees, small agencies without a business, and people without access to one another locally and globally.

As an industry professional, it has been heartbreaking to see the devastation from tyrannical rule on an industry I appreciate so much. I am overjoyed to see this regime of fear, control, manipulation, and torment finally falling to the ground. I pray Americans never fall prey to such foolishness and evil ever again. May we never take for granted our God-given liberties that we have been blessed with as a nation.

Moving forward, the transition to de-regulation of post-pandemic policies will be slow-going and will require much patience on everyone’s part. Because I have an inside view of the industry, I see the day-to-day difficulties afflicting the travel industry including understaffing, inflation, service cutbacks, cancellations, and heightened tempers. It will take time for the turnaround; however, we are on the right track now to see an amazing rebound in the travel industry.

Therefore, I have a few suggestions to help you and others be more prepared as you travel in the upcoming months. As your travel advisor, I am cognizant of both your pent-up excitement to connect with the world again and the pressure industry professionals are facing with the thrust of demand in travel. It is my responsibility as your advisor to help you navigate with peace and patience through this complicated season.

PACK PATIENCE IN YOUR CARRY-ON

Due to extreme understaffing, “revenge travel,” limited flight availability, and flight cancellations, airline travel is a fluid and potentially complicated process. Many workers have been overwhelmed as they are forced to do the job of three people due to staffing cuts. Check-in times may take longer due to constant changes in protocol. Airlines tickets are at a premium. Call wait times can exceed four hours. All in all, it will take time for the industry to recover and move at its pre-pandemic era pace.

As a traveler, you will need to think of others more than yourself, recognizing the demands industry professionals are experiencing on a daily basis. A simple thank you, a kind word, and a smile go a long way in making the travel process much easier and less stressful for everyone. You will also need to be mindful of other travelers whose point of view may not be your own. A divisive word can change the tone of a flight and increase hostility in a moment. Let’s all remember what our mothers taught us when we were children: “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”

BE PREPARED AHEAD OF TIME WITH ALL YOUR DOCUMENTS

Due to major staffing shortages with the Department of State, passport turnaround times can be 12-18 weeks to process. Therefore, it is imperative to apply as early as possible for any travel documentation that you may need. This includes passports, visas, TSA, and Global Entry. If you are traveling last-minute, be sure to expedite any paperwork necessary for your travels. Last-minute passports and visas can be processed; however, the fees to do so are high. Therefore, it’s best to always keep your passport valid with at least 6 months validity from the return date of travel.

BE READY TO PAY PREMIUMS EVERYWHERE YOU GO

Because the demand for travel is at its greatest height after the last two years of meager production, many vendors are attempting to recover their losses. Prices have become higher, availability much slimmer, and choices fewer. Be prepared to pay a premium all across the board on airline tickets, rental cars, hotel lodging, attractions, tours, cruises, and activities. Determine your budget ahead of time and be prepared to come with a little extra on hand.

While the industry begins to recover, keep your eyes out for even more restrictions to lift in the near future. As of Sunday, June 12th, there are 65 countries and counting that have completely lifted all pandemic-era restrictions. I anticipate this number to increase rapidly as citizens and businesses are standing up for their freedoms and pushing back on tyrannical control. On Hourly Fees: How the Pandemic Changed the Travel Industry

If you were to tell me back in 2020 that the travel industry would soon experience a colossal shaking that nearly wiped out the entire industry over the course of two years, I would have shaken my head in disbelief. Sadly, the travel industry has been one of the hardest hit industries from the pandemic era due to the initial onset of the virus followed by a litany of forced restrictions, regulations, and tyrannical control. It's taken over 27 months now to repair the massive damage inflicted upon the industry, but we are finally seeing life and liberation begin to shine in the travel business once again.

Unfortunately, the catastrophe has left some indelible changes on the travel industry and to anyone who works in this field. In addition to millions of job losses globally, the industry has also suffered a decline in flight availability, hundreds of flight cancellations, bankrupted agencies, and inflation. While we are healing in the industry, it will take some time to fully recover and repair.

INGENUITY, TECHNOLOGY, AND PARTNERSHIP

However, not all the changes regarding travel have been bleak. The restrictions enforced upon the nation ignited ingenuity in many as new trends and ideas for travel began to emerge. For example, in the summer of 2020, glamping became a highly-sought after luxury travel experience with several companies making a pivot to facilitate outdoor caravans and excursions. Families began to rediscover the great American outdoors, and the National Parks have seen record visits over the last three summers.

Mastering industry-related technology also became a necessary skill. While the need to depend on internet and commuter work deepened throughout the pandemic, we saw an increase in available online tools servicing the travel industry. In fact, I’ve been a part of several beta teams testing these new tools daily. These tools have streamlined everything from data management to client itinerary presentation and have made both the administrative and service-oriented tasks of running my agency much easier to execute.

The importance of working together has also become a prominent factor since 2020. Due to the unfortunate shifts and closings industry wide, those who were left needed to come together forming beneficial partnerships. The network I work with was one such example—in late 2020, ProTravel positioned themselves within a larger network called Global Travel Collection. The partnership has proven to be a successful move that allows us to offer our clients an even better menu of contracts and choices.

CHANGES NEEDED FOR THE NEW MODEL

But perhaps one of the greatest changes the pandemic left upon the industry is in the day-to-day operations of the travel advisors. For years, advisors have been stuck in a decades-old model that serviced clients with excellence but never charged hourly fees. This concept originally came from the 9-5 office model when travel agents were steadily employed by brick-and-mortars but were not required to provide customized client service. Now that many agents over the last decade have exited the cubicle door, established their own block of clientele, and pivoted their business to functioning as a travel advisor to a niche clientele, they have greatly increased their value and level of service. This change was never reflected in our pricing until the pandemic shined light on just how valuable our services were to the industry. It was way past time to reflect our value and highly sought-after professional services in the way we conducted our business. As a result, we are now beginning to charge hourly fees for service-related requests and research.

RE-EVALUATION OF MY CURRENT BUSINESS MODEL

During this crisis, I, like many, had to re-evaluate my current business model in light of how the business of travel now looks much different than in the past. Upon making this discovery, I had to ask myself, “How can I better service my clients, yet still remain one of the best in the industry?’ After surviving the pandemic-era disaster in the travel industry, I have determined that JSO Travel will emerge stronger than ever for my clients. I also had to find a new way to be effective in the process of designing and selling travel.

My agency is a boutique agency that caters luxury clients and their specific needs. So, I have revised the business model of the past to a custom model for each individual client. Included in this model is a more exclusive design experience for my clients with a tiered five-package structure based upon travel budgets, preferences, and exclusivity.

To deliver a more customized travel experience, I am now also charging a modest per hour fee structure. Over the years, I understand that clients desire quality, excellence, personal preferences, and a customized design process for each trip. This new fee structure allows me to focus on continuing to offer my clients the excellent service they so desire.

In truth, travel design requires hours of behind-the-scenes details for a trip to exceed my client’s expectations. By charging hourly fees, I can be completely focused on every detail of a specific trip, making sure that everything is done just as my clients have requested.

Since the world has changed, we must change with it to emerge stronger than ever before. We can either let the storms destroy us, or we can allow it to reveal our weaknesses so that we can be refined in the endurance process. I choose the latter. While I was greatly challenged in the pandemic era, I know I am emerging better and stronger than before. The same applies to my business as well.

With a more exclusive travel experience, the new fee structure creates a freshness to serve my clients in new ways than before Yes, the pandemic-era may have been a hard blow to the travel industry; however, it did not win! Where to Travel Summer 2020: San Diego, California

Have you been sitting at home looking at the four walls and thinking, “I have to get out of here! When will we ever leave this vortex?” Well, I have good news for you! Travel is opening back up and coming back stronger than ever before. By now, most families have scheduled their summer getaway. However, it’s not too late to get in a quick summer vacation before the kids return to school and our lives resume the normalcy we all crave.

While many travelers long to go abroad this year, my professional opinion is to reserve any far-reaching travel until next year. With that in mind, there are loads of domestic destinations that are awaiting the arrival of guests and preparing to host them. A long-time family favorite, San Diego is currently open for summer travelers. With its nearly-perfect weather, great dining scene, and ample activities, San Diego is a perfect choice for anyone looking for a domestic getaway. Here you’ll find one of the best zoos in The United States, SeaWorld, Old Town, and Balboa Park. All of these hot ticket attractions are located within the metro area.

For a daytrip excursion, Catalina Island is only a 2-hour drive outside the city. If you are an ocean lover, there are great beaches and a perfect place to get your toes in the sand. When traveling to San Diego, I would recommend a stay of no less than 4 days to take in all the major sights and attractions. The Gaslamp Quarter offers some of the best dining venues in the city, and there is always something going on in that district. If you are a baseball fan, you may be able to catch a Padres game at Petco Park. Of course, Balboa Park hosts several museums that are suitable for just about anyone. Most importantly, you’ll fall in love with the warm sunshiny weather and a temperate 72 degree average.

San Diego is also a popular spot for whale watching, so if you happen to visit during whale season, be sure to purchase tickets for your whale watching tour. If you are driving Highway 1, San Diego is a great choice for a driving trip that can be mixed with cities like Los Angeles for a big city vibe or Palm Springs for your desert oasis.

For those who are looking to avoid crowds, now is the time to go since most venues will have limited hours of operation and most hotels and restaurants are open on a limited basis for occupancy. As states are slowly beginning to open back up and people are returning to work, the travel industry is also seeing the initial signs of a comeback. Many travelers are disheartened at the loss of their family vacation this year; however, airlines, hotels, cruise lines, and tour operators are doing everything within their power to pick up the pieces from the pandemic of COVID-19. Travel may look a little different for the next few months, but with a little direction from your luxury travel advisor, you can get out there and enjoy the adventurous world of travel once again.

The main problem facing travelers this summer is clarity on where they can go for the next few months. Congratulations! We’ve made it through one of the most difficult times in history!

If you’re like me, sitting at home with no place to go can only last for a limited amount of time until adventure starts calling again. Thankfully, restrictions are being lifted, and the world of travel is beginning to spin once more. In my home state of Oklahoma, we have now entered into Phase 3 with open businesses, houses of worship, and public places. It’s refreshing to see life reset and resume with resiliency as the summer travel season begins.

While the travel industry endured a significant wound during the Covid-19 crisis, it did not suffer a fatal blow. Like many other sectors caught in the crossfires of the pandemic, the travel industry is now quickly returning to life. While it’s not quite full speed ahead just yet, I can assure you that the world of travel will come back bigger and better than it was before. In fact, industry leaders are calling for an incredible resurgence in 2021!

Weekend Getaway: Chicago

One of the wonderful benefits to living in the US is the opportunity to visit so many diverse cities, even if for only a weekend. Whatever your style or flavor, you can reach any major US city within a few hours flight time and enjoy a couple of days of fun and relaxation. From fine dining and entertainment to culture and outdoor adventure, a weekend getaway can be an exciting investment in your marriage, mental health, or family time.

Since I live in the Midwest, I’ve discovered that Chicago is one of the easiest places to travel for a few days of downtime. In addition to its captivating skyscrapers, Chicago is home to a myriad of amenities including a host of fine dining restaurants, cultural festivals and neighborhoods, concerts, and performances. If a quick weekend getaway is the cure you seek, then Chicago is your ticket.

Here are three tips on making the most out of your weekend in the Windy City:

MEET AN OUT-OF-TOWN FRIEND

Thanks to its convenient location in the middle of the country, Chicago O’Hare airport is connected to almost every major city in the US. In just a matter of 3 hours or less, most Americans can reach Chicago by lunchtime. This direct non-stop route makes meeting friends and colleagues from around the country a breeze! In fact, if you’re planning a reunion with friends from all corners of the US, Chicago is by far the easiest, most accessible center. (Recently, my wife and I met a Madison-based friend in Chicago for the weekend. We flew directly from Tulsa, while our friend drove in across the state line from Wisconsin. Travel time for all of us clocked under 2 hours!)

In addition to the easy commute, Chicago offers an array of activities for the discerning traveler. I recommend visiting the Field Museum for natural history artifacts, cruising down Lake Michigan on a local river boat, or attending a free afternoon concert at the Chicago Cultural Center. And of course, the city boasts a full-service dining scene, ranging from casual deep-dish pizzerias and hip brunch cafes to fine-dining steakhouses. Whether you’re here flying solo or teaming up with friends and family, your schedule is sure to stay full during the weekend. UBER IT!

While Chicago is easily walkable, it is still a major city with a wide-spread net of restaurants and attractions. When your feet are ready for a break, just call for an Uber. We found this car-sharing service is in ample supply in the city, and it is by far the best way to get around.

Chicago isn’t known for its predictable weather—in fact, its winter season and blustery winds can be quite brutal. Where to Travel in 2019

As we turn the page of the calendar and venture into 2019, planning travel for the upcoming year is often at the top of my clients’ list. While some trips can be enjoyed spontaneously, the best trips are planned ahead of time with great attention to detail. Like a beautiful wedding, a memorable trip is carefully chosen, mapped out, and scheduled in advance. Failure to plan carefully can often lead to high ticket prices, costly exchanges, sold out venues, and a host of other headaches. Therefore, as your knowledgeable travel advisor, I encourage you to sit down with your family early on in the year and discuss your travel plans, create a realistic budget, and make arrangements as soon as possible. Being proactive in your travel planning will serve you well in the long run, allowing you to enjoy the journey while minimizing stress.

During the initial planning stages, one of the most important things to consider is destination options. At the beginning of the year, my wife and I sit down and talk about where we would like to travel, what would be the most beneficial locations for gaining knowledge for my clients, how much we want to spend on travel, and when would be the best time for specific trips. We also consider what we’re willing to sacrifice for what we’re willing to gain. For example, Europe is one of our favorite destinations, but it’s also an expensive place for tourists in the summer. However, if we truly want to see a specific city in Europe, we’re willing to compromise and settle for less optimal weather in exchange for low-season prices. Discussing the pros and cons of each trip and the benefits thereof help us stay on track with both our vision and our budget.

After considering our options, we begin formulating a plan and a general budget for the trip. We factor in costs for air travel, on the ground transportation, accommodations, food, entertainment, and shopping. We’ve also discovered ways to cut back on our food budget like eating one larger meal a day, sharing meals, or purchasing snacks and sandwiches from a local grocery store. While these are small exchanges, they add up over the year and help us stay in agreement with our original plan. By the end of the year, we can look back and enjoy all the wonderful adventures and around-the-world memories we made together as husband and wife.

Of course, after having traveled to so many cool places, it can be challenging to narrow down my recommendations of the best 2019 destinations to my clients. Because travel is deeply personal and based on a customized experience, I endeavor to work with my clients to discover their particular interests and desires before planning a particular itinerary for them. As a result, I’ve had an amazing time creating and executing unique trips based on the client’s particular preferences. My concierge experience includes arranging an exclusive birthday party at a 5-star property in London, customizing private theme tours, setting up safaris in Africa, and designing packages for the Olypmics including front row seating to the events. Each trip has been like no other, and my clients come back from their experience with memories to last a lifetime.

In addition to catering to my clients’ individual travel aspirations, I also serve as an experienced resource for travel suggestions. Often, I find that unexperienced travelers can become easily overwhelmed with all the destination options available to them. Afterall, it is a big, big world out there! Thankfully, due to my 20-year tenure in the industry and my personal experience on the field, I can confidently suggest all-time winners that would please just about anyone and everyone regardless of their age or background.

With that being said, I’d like to share three specific destination options for 2019. I have personally experienced each of these destinations myself and have sent several clients to these places as well. None of us were disappointed, as the destinations on this list are both classic and customizable. If you’re at a loss as to where to experience your adventure this year, here’s my list of all-time winning destinations.

ITALY

This southern European country is a traveler’s dream. Rich in culture, art, and history, Italy is alive with adventure and personal connection. Travelers can select from among the country’s diverse offerings including romantic Venetian gondola rides, art tours in Florence, historical ventures in Rome, sunbathing in the Almafi Coast, or spa treatments in Tuscany. Visitors can ski in the snow-capped mountains near Milan, drive a car through the winding vineyard countryside, or dine al fresco in posh resorts. Italy truly has something to cater to everyone.

My wife and I recently took a three-week tour of Italy and scouted the country from Venice to Sorrento. There was not one thing we didn’t absolutely enjoy about that trip—each stop on our itinerary was as magical as the next. We enjoyed meandering through the mysterious labyrinths of Venice, taking walking tours of Rome, visiting the Uffizi with an art history guide, and exploring off-the-beaten-path villages in the country. We had our fill of authentic pasta dishes, savored every gelato, and shopped for Italian made leather goods. The entire trip was full of romance, intrigue, and adventure—the perfect dynamic for any fun-loving couple.

If you wish to visit Italy this year, I suggest planning a minimal 10-day trip. Once you arrive in the country, ease into your trip by resting on your first day. After sleeping off the jet-lag and orienting yourself to the new surroundings, take a morning walking tour of the city. Should you decide to book a multi-city tour, I recommend using the train system until you get further into the countryside. If resort style is your preference, be sure to visit the Almafi Coast, focusing your visit in Sorrento and Positano. Regardless of your personal taste, you’ll return from Italy with a cherished memory and a rich experience!

THE CARIBBEAN

The warm turquoise waters of the Caribbean are hard to resist, even for those who enjoy the cooler Northern climates. Nothing is truly more relaxing than a day sitting out under the warm sun, listening to the flavorful beats of a steel drum, sipping a fruit smoothie, and absorbing the view of white sands, blue waters, and open sky. If travelers have the possibility in their schedules, I would suggest at least one Caribbean trip a year, just for the sake of the slow-paced style and tranquil scenery.

Some travelers have been hesitant to visit the Caribbean after the storm damage of Hurricane Irma in 2017. However, most islands now are almost completely operational and offering their pre-hurricane services. On occasion, a traveler might experience a delay in service or power blackouts, but for the most part, the Caribbean is repaired and back to working order.

If visiting the Caribbean this year, I recommend the Dominican Republic for family-friendly all-inclusive resorts and Aruba for high-end leisure and relaxing properties. On my radar as well is Turks and Caicos, Anguilla, and Barbados. My wife and I have visited Aruba twice in the past 2 years and couldn’t agree more with the country’s slogan—it is a happy island, and one that we’ll visit time and time again.

NON-CONTINENTAL US

American travelers are familiar with crisscrossing the country for business and pleasure, but far few Americans take time to venture farther into Alaska and Hawaii, our country’s two non-continental states. Visits to to these locations are an enriching experience, as they enlarge travelers’ understanding of the US as a whole and give them a much larger perspective of the beautiful diversity in our own home country.

As we have been traveling extensively over these past few years, my wife and I have had opportunities to visit both Alaska and Hawaii and profoundly loved each experience. Like many Alaska visitors, we traveled to the state on a summer cruise and stopped along the coast at various ports of call. Each port provided us an opportunity to experience the most popular tourist attractions of Alaska including whale watching and wildlife sighting. As we sailed through Glacier Bay, the sunrise over the artic icebergs stunned us with its violet hues and cold stillness. We ended the trip with a 3-hour train ride from the last port to Anchorage that gave us a huge window into the Alaskan interior with full views of majestic nature and exotic wildlife.

Our excursions to the South Pacific islands of Hawaii have been no less of an adventure. We’ve visited the state twice, focusing our tour on Oahu and Maui. Of all the places I’ve visited, Hawaii has a special draw in its vibrant culture and beautiful people. Here, we’ve tasted of all the wonderful flavors Hawaii has to offer including incredible fresh seafood and fruit. We’ve seen its gorgeous beaches, experienced its sunset luaus, driven its mountainous heart-racing roads, and even survived its most recent hurricane in August 2018. Hawaii is a state like no other, full of both crazy adventure and captivating beauty.

Any traveler visiting Hawaii will walk away from these islands with unforgettable experiences that will last for years to come. This is an excellent destination for old and young couples alike as well as families of all ages. Many of the hotels offer family-friendly services, while other properties cater more to adults and couples. Regardless of your needs and preferences, Hawaii has something memorable to offer you and your family.

EXPLORE THE HISTORY & CULTURE OF EUROPE

Europe is always a favorite destination for even the most distinguished of travelers, and the continent has something for everyone in the family to enjoy, regardless of age. From ancient history to a modern food scene, Europe is sure to be a bucket list item for all the members of your family.

Because December is a low season for Europe, crowds are lighter in the cities and great deals abound, which makes this an ideal destination for larger families and best-value conscious travelers. Depending on your preferences, you can venture north to Scandinavia for snow and winter sports, central and Eastern Europe for Christmas market shopping, or Southern Europe for beaches and sun.

A few years ago, my wife and I took a 3-week tour of the continent, hopping around through London, Rome, Venice, the French Riviera, Croatia, and Athens. We were able to explore some of the great sights of Europe without vying for space along the crowded sidewalks or standing in long lines at the museums. Plus, due to the low capacity of many properties, we were able to secure some excellent deals on hotel rates and tour packages. This is still one of our favorite trips to date, and we will cherish that country-hopping tour for years to come!

STAY WARM IN THE SUNNY CARIBBEAN

If escaping the cold and snow of the north is your idea of December fun, then I suggest running south towards the Caribbean. Here, you can exchange the gray days of winter for beaches, sun, and tropical paradise!

Because December is high tourist season for the Caribbean, hotels will be full and beaches swarming with visitors. However, since the Caribbean is full of hundreds of properties ranging from family-friendly all-inclusive resorts to luxury 5-star accommodations, island space is plenteous regardless of your preferences. Just be sure to plan ahead and book early before hotel space is sold out.

When traveling to the Caribbean, I recommend the Dominican Republic for larger families seeking all-inclusive properties, Aruba for cultural seekers, and Turks and Caicos for elite travelers. And if you want to hit multiple islands all at once, consider taking a Caribbean cruise over the Christmas holiday.

SHOP & DINE IN NEW YORK CITY

If the hustle and bustle of the big city is more your thing, nothing says metropolitan Christmas like New York City. Thanks to the Real ID Act that went into effect recently, many US residents can no longer travel by air from state to state without a passport. This means if you live in certain states, you can’t whip out your license at check-in, even if you’re just traveling to another US city. While this may be inconvenient for some, the preventative solution is simple: Keep your passport current and take it with you whenever you travel domestically. Apply for Global Entry

For those of you who travel frequently, Global Entry is your golden ticket! This government-approved card will grant you access to bypass long check-in and security lines in most US airports as well as with US carriers flying internationally. I can’t tell you how much time and stress Global Entry has saved me during my extended travels this past year! This is one travel expense worth its weight in gold. If you don’t have Global Entry yet, stop right now and apply. You’ll be glad you did!

Application Note: In order to receive your Global Entry card, you will have to go through an extensive application process, which also requires a scheduled interview with US Customs. Croatia: Beyond the Cruise

When most travelers hear of Croatia, they think of cruise stops in gorgeous port cities along the Dalmatian coast. While Dubrovnik and Split are beautiful beach destinations for a week-long Mediterranean cruise, there is so much more to explore in the little country of Croatia. As a former territory of old Yugoslavia, Croatia boasts of many unique, hidden gems within its borders. Here, you can discover the remains of Diocletian’s palace, trek through the Plitvice Lakes, learn valuable lessons in history, visit some of the best Christmas markets in the world, and experience the many quaint restaurants and cafes throughout the country.

Because tourism is the number one industry in all of Croatia, the hotels and tour companies are extremely hospitable, especially to Americans. The dollar also goes very far in the nation’s economy, which makes visiting for a week or two easy on the wallet. The Croats are a pleasant people, welcoming to foreigners and unassuming in demeanor. For the traveler adventuring farther into Eastern Europe, Croatia is an excellent place to begin this exciting journey.

While there are so many things to discover in Croatia, I recommend an itinerary focused on Zagreb, the Plitvice Lakes, Split, and Dubrovnik. By starting off in Zagreb and working your way through the interior of the country and south along the coast, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to see some unusual sights not available on the typical cruise trip. Based on my recent experience and professional expertise, here are the five ways I recommend exploring Croatia beyond the cruise. Hire Private Tour Guides

When visiting a new destination for the first time, this is always one of my top suggestions. The tour companies in Croatia are exceptional, cooperative, and knowledgeable in their niches. We were quite pleased with Fortuna Tours and their genuine hospitality. Each one of their guides—from Zagreb to Dubrovnik—were extremely well-versed in the nation’s culture and history as well as in the city’s architecture and local spots. The bilingual tour guides were wonderfully fluent in English, exceptionally educated, and personable in their presentations.

For your trip through Croatia, it is most advisable to book several private guided tours along your journey. You’ll familiarize yourself faster with the cities this way, and you’ll learn much more about Croatian history and culture than you would have on your own. By hiring a private guide, you’ll be able to interact with a local professional, learn from his or her expertise, and gain valuable perspective on your destination. Visit Plitvice Lakes

One of Croatia’s unknown jewels is the Plitvice Lakes National Park, the nation's largest park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Situated near the Bosnia and Herzegovina border, the Plitvice Lakes is a system of crystal-clear emerald and topaz lakes, cascades, and rivers covering more than 73,000 acres. A popular summer tourist destination for locals and foreigners, it is also a breathtaking spot during the fall and winter months.

Although the Plitvice Lakes is open to the public, I recommend booking a guided tour of the Park with a local on your first visit. The park is quite expansive, and the some of the trails and bridges are confusing to a newcomer. To gain the most from your experience, it is wise (and safe) to hire a guide. Also, be sure to wear good walking shoes, dress comfortably, and bring your camera! You’ll want to fill up your Instagram at this epic photo spot.

Study the History of Yugoslavia Prior to Arrival

As part of former Yugoslavia, Croatia has a fractured and storied past. In order to properly grasp the various layers of its culture and history—and to connect with its people—travelers need to be aware of the Communist background that surrounds this little country. Do a little research on Tito and the formation and dissolution of Yugoslavia before entering Croatia. This will help you overcome any historical or contextual hurdles that may hinder you from understanding the current culture and socio-economic conditions of this former Soviet state.

Hire a Private Driver for Point-to-Point Destinations

When trekking across the interior and down to the coasts, I highly recommend booking a private guided transfer service from one destination to another. These drivers are professional contractors from reputable companies that can escort you safely from one point to another without any problems. They also provide great narration during your drive, pointing out some of the interesting historical landmarks along the way.

A drive though Croatia will allow you to see the unfamiliar chapters of Croatia’s past—from the sobering to the delightful. You’ll pass through abandoned villages with structures still scarred by bullet holes from the Yugoslav wars, you’ll traverse beautiful coastal roadways, and you’ll catch glimpses of quaint Eastern European fairy-book towns. And for a real surprise—you’ll even have an opportunity to stop through Bosnia and Herzegovena on the drive from Split to Dubrovnik! You can have your passport stamped at the border crossing and spend a few minutes snapping photos on this unexpected multi-country road trip.

Visit the Local Markets

Like most of Europe, Croatian cities and towns are lined with traditional markets, especially during the holiday season. Known widely for its reputation as one of the best producers of Christmas markets, Croatia is a fun, holiday destination in December. As the townspeople come together selling local crafts, food, treats, drinks, and desserts, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to participate in Croatian Christmas traditions. Join the festivities as you walk through the booths, buy a gift for someone at home, and listen to live Christmas music (sung in Croatian of course). And be sure to try the fritules, a traditional Croatian dessert similar to funnel cake, deep fried and drizzled in chocolate or sprinkled with powdered sugar!

With so many adventures to offer, Croatia is certainly worth adding to your travel bucket list. Thanks to its gracious people, rich history, and diverse scenery, this Eastern European gem is one you and your family will enjoy discovering together. As Americans, we are well familiar with our European ancestry as a nation. We know all about King George of England, Christopher Columbus from Spain, and the French roots down in Louisiana. But there’s more to European influences in the New World other than the US. From Canada to the Caribbean, South America to the Virgin Islands, Europe still maintains a strong cultural influence in the western hemisphere.

During my travels over the last year, I’ve been focusing on Europe and European-influenced destinations. In the last 12 months alone, my wife and I have traversed Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean, London, Rome, Athens, and several other exciting cities on the continent. We’ve also explored locations closer to home that still retain a heavy European culture. From Vancouver to the Dominican Republic, this side of the globe still sings the glories of Europe’s golden age of imperialism and exploration.

Surprisingly, two of our favorite unexpected European-influenced destinations are Argentina and Aruba. Both countries have an illustrious history stemming from the Old World and are still major tourist hot spots for both American and European travelers. If you’re looking for a new twist on these hidden treasures, I suggest booking your next trip to either of these locations. Ideal for luxury, family, or group trips, both Argentina and Aruba offer discerning travelers an exciting fusion of European sophistication and New World energy. ARGENTINA

While most Americans typically identify South America with Spanish discovery, Argentina has quite a different backstory. Settled by Germans, Swiss, Italians, French, Portuguese, and Spanish, Argentina is a melting pot of European and Latin cultures. Vespas vroom through the streets of Buenos Aires, hotels feature elegant French and Italian décor, and Patagonia boasts of Swiss chalets amid a picturesque mountain backdrop. To visit Argentina is to explore Europe through a new lens.

As an expert in the industry, I recommend travelers begin their journey in the capital city. Bursting with energy while dancing to bohemian rhythms, Buenos Aires offers a multi-cultural experience full of bright colors and subdued elegance. For luxury accommodations, book your stay at the Park Hyatt, a remodeled Parisian-styled palace in the upscale Recoleta neighborhood. As an added bonus, the Park Hyatt also offers private or group tours of the city with walking, driving, half-day, or full-day options.

Like other major metropolitan cities, Buenos Aires is divided into various districts, each with its own history, subculture, and particular flair. Be sure to check out La Boca--an old Italian immigrant district--for sidewalk artists, local boutiques, restaurants, and brightly colored buildings. Drink an afternoon espresso in trendy Palermo or enjoy some vintage shopping in Italian-infused San Telmo. (We came across an outdoor fountain that could have passed as an artifact from The Borghese Gardens in Rome!) Replete with romantic architecture, artistic energy, and scores of bistros and cafes, it is no wonder Buenos Aires is often referred to as the Paris of South America.

After you’ve toured the capital and eaten your fill of medialunas (Argentina’s twist on the French croissant), take a journey down to Patagonia, the nation’s southern countryside. Here, you will enjoy a slower pace of life, Swiss chalets, rugged mountains, crystal lakes, and open fields. For a rustic, luxurious lodge experience, stay at Llao Llao and take in some of the most beautiful views of Patagonia from your own private balcony. Then journey into German and Swiss inspired Bariloche for shopping, dining, and espresso. And be sure to come hungry for chocolate, because downtown Bariloche is the chocolate capital of the world! Thanks to the dozens of chocolate stores lining the streets, this town will delight your taste buds with confectionary treats from across the globe.

ARUBA

Now for some beach fun, check out Aruba, a small Caribbean island in the Dutch Antilles. Located 20 miles off the coast of Venezuela, Aruba is a former Dutch colony with strong ties to the European continent. Although not often frequented by Midwestern American travelers, this tiny island nation is a popular tourist destination for East Coasters and Europeans.

When visiting Aruba, travelers can choose from several beautiful beaches and luxurious hotel properties. I recommend the Renaissance Ocean Suites (which has its own private Flamingo island) and the Ritz Carlton. Each property has excellent customer service, access to pristine beaches, and family-friendly activities.

To experience a taste of Europe, first try the Dutch pancakes that can be enjoyed as either a sweet or savory dish. Since these are a common menu item throughout the island, you can try a few different variations throughout your visit. (My favorite was the chocolate and strawberry served at the Dutch Pancake House in Oranjestad!) You’ll also have plenty of opportunity to practice your Dutch, although English is widely spoken and understood here. And if you’re looking for some Dutch-inspired gifts to take home, you’ll have no problem finding trinkets imported from the continent. A combination of American franchises, European customs, and Caribbean traditions, Aruba is ideal for the culture-seeking beach enthusiast.

And for travelers who are concerned about circumventing storms south of the US: Thanks to its location in the ABC islands, Aruba is actually out of the hurricane path! If you want to bypass the storm-prone islands of the Caribbean, Aruba is always a safe choice.

As the summer winds down and a new school year begins, many families are fondly reminiscing their fun summer vacations. Many made memories at the lakes or the beach, in theme parks or at Grandma’s house. There’s just no other time of the year when the pace of life slows down and families come together to celebrate the warm, carefree days of summer.

If you’re remembering those fun-filled days of sun and sand with a bit of nostalgia, I have some good news for you! Today is the perfect time to start planning NEXT year’s summer family vacation! And if you’re looking for some exciting new destinations for your crew, I have five amazing vacation ideas just for you.

While there are so many awe-inspiring sights and historically important places to visit in the US, I’ve narrowed down this month’s list to these top five. Because I’ve personally journeyed to all these locations in my recent travels, I’ve gained first-hand knowledge to assist you in booking a hassle-free trip. Any one of these destinations will certainly be the grand highlight of your summer and will have your family reminiscing for years to come!

ALASKA

For our 5th year anniversary, my wife and I ventured out on a Norwegian cruise ship sailing through the southern ports of Alaska. The cruise lasted 7 days, beginning in Vancouver and disembarking in Seward, and stopped at 3 different Alaskan ports along the way. Our week was full of exciting adventures from watching whales breach right in front of us to hearing the snap, crackle, and pop of falling ice in the glaciers.

Venturing to the last frontier by cruise is one of the best ways to get an overview of our 49th state. With port stops and excursions as well as onboard activities and dining, a cruise affords travelers the opportunity to bond with loved ones in a variety of settings. To maximize your time, I suggest booking a port-intensive cruise that docks nearly every day with a limit of two and half days at sea. This will allow you and your family to stretch your legs, avoid seasickness, and see plenty of the sights. Although there’s many cruise-sponsored excursions to fill your schedule, I highly recommend booking excursions with the locals. You’ll get way more bang for your buck while learning from local guides.

No trip out west is complete without a trip to Yellowstone National Park. Full of iconic American scenery, thermal pools, geysers, and wildlife, this park is accessible from both Wyoming and Montana state lines.

If you plan a driving trip, I recommend scheduling at least a full day to view the various natural wonders, tour the gift shops, and enjoy the day. To avoid traffic, get an early start, pack a picnic lunch, mark a route with the Park maps, and try to opt out on holiday weekends. If you prefer a longer stay, there is a historic lodge with cozy, rustic accommodations. And for the adventurous types, there are plenty of spaces within the Park to set up camp.

A word of caution: Drive carefully! The drive up and down and around the mountains can be a stomach churner for an inexperienced driver. For extra safety, travel in daylight in a small SUV.

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA

Of all the historic cities in the US, Philadelphia is one of our nation’s most outstanding treasures. Here you can trace Revolutionary War and early American history, tour the city’s amazing architecture, and enjoy a traditional Philly Cheese Steak sandwich.

If your goal is to focus on history, then I suggest staying in the Loews in the financial district. This hotel is just a few walking blocks away from the heart of the historical district and makes commuting back and forth fast and easy. LEWES, DELAWARE

While Lewes may be familiar to those on the East Coast, this quaint beach town is a hidden gem for those visiting from the South or Midwest. About an hour’s drive from Rehoboth Beach, Lewes is one of the more family-friendly towns on the quiet Delaware beach. Known as the first city in the first state, this iconic Atlantic summer town is full of charm, history, and beautiful waterfronts.

If you’re looking for a hotel on the bay with a bed and breakfast feel, I recommend trying The Inn at Canal Square. For those who prefer more modern accomodations, look for hotels near Rehoboth Beach. And be sure to try the wholewheat blueberry pancakes at the Nectar Café in the town square. They are out of this world!

With outdoor sports and recreation activities in abundance, Asheville is an ideal place for families desiring to escape the bustling noise of the city.

When visiting Asheville, I recommend booking a room at the Biltmore Hotel on the grounds of the Biltmore Estate. With stunning views of the property and easy access to shopping, this is the best location for first-time guests in the area. After visiting the Biltmore, take a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway, check out the waterfalls, and drink in the gorgeous scenery!

5 Ways to Experience Europe Like Never Before

EUROPE…A complex continent, filled with diversity and paradoxes, ancient history and modern conveniences, lush fields, pulsating cities, rocky beaches, and snowy mountains. Thanks to its charm, beauty, mystery, and sophisticated culture, Europe is one of the most desired destinations of many travelers. However, for the unseasoned tourist, Europe can be challenging, expensive, and a bit overwhelming without proper planning and guidance.

As I’ve been traveling extensively through Europe the past several months, I’ve learned first-hand some secrets that will help you navigate through transportation complexities, utilize the exchange rate to your advantage, and maximize your positive experiences. By following these few simple tips of the trade, your next European journey will not only be the adventure of a lifetime, but a surprising success as well!

Request a Meet and Greet Service

For American travelers, one of the most frustrating travel experiences is navigating customs upon arrival, especially if there’s a language barrier. After nearly 20 hours of flying over the water and being herded through one airport security line after another, anyone can feel pretty tired and jostled once they’ve reached their final destination.

To relieve some of the stress, I recommend requesting a “Meet and Greet” transfer service when booking your trip. These services are not expensive and are well worth the savings in time and energy!

A typical Meet and Greet service will meet you at the airport upon arrival, escort you through customs, help retrieve your luggage at baggage claim, assist in transporting luggage through the airport, and walk you to the transfer vehicle. From there, the service will drive you to your hotel where the bellman will pick up the luggage and escort you to check-in.

My wife and I have used a Meet and Greet service several times during our recent travels, and it has been one the most well-invested parts of our budget! We were even surprised at how quickly Queen of Clubs Concierge moved us through the express line at customs in London. Book a Private Tour

Another recommended way of experiencing Europe is touring the city with a private guide. Many local companies (especially within the Virtuoso network) offer pre-packaged or customized private tours of your destination. The guides of such excursions are usually highly qualified locals who are trained, educated, and extremely knowledgeable of their city, its history, people, and culture. (Many of the guides we’ve worked with in Europe have a PhD and are fluent in multiple languages.)

Depending on availability and preference, private tours can consist of a walking tour, a driving tour, or a combination of both and can be booked for a few hours, half-day, or full day. Upon booking, the tour can be arranged with a meeting place in your hotel lobby or at a central location within walking distance of your hotel. From there, the guide will personally escort you through some of the best highlights of the city, providing a fully-researched commentary, personal anecdotes, and lively conversation. You’ll walk away from this experience being well-informed, enlightened, and just a bit more cultured than when you first arrived.

Travel by Train

If you plan on booking a multi-city trip across Europe, I also recommend utilizing the train systems en lieu of airports. Not only is this mode of transportation far more comfortable and less stressful than flying, but the train systems on the continent are also highly developed and efficient. Within just a few hours, a commuter can travel from one capital city to another in a nearby country with very little effort. Need to work while in transit? No problem! The trains come fully connected, providing complimentary wifi to all passengers.

On our last trip to Europe, we opted for the three-hour train commute from Vienna to Prague. In addition to watching some pretty amazing scenery through our windows, we were able to make our time productive…both of us worked, contacted clients, and enjoyed breakfast and coffee from the dining menu. We arrived in Prague refreshed, accomplished, and relaxed!

Visit Eastern Europe

Some of the most beautiful hidden gems of the continent are the former Soviet Union nations. Rich in history and diverse in culture, these destinations offer a better value market for the American dollar, gorgeous vistas, undiscovered sights, and valuable lessons in history. From the crystal green waters of Croatia to the bohemian vibe in Budapest, the former USSR countries are a must-see for both the non-experienced and well-seasoned European traveler. And if you prefer off-the-beaten-path adventures, Eastern Europe is definitely a destination well suited for your bold palette!

Since December, my wife and I have journeyed through Croatia, Prague, Budapest, and Warsaw, enjoying the sights, meeting the locals, touring several of the high-end properties, and hearing insightful stories of the people. One of our favorite off-the-road discoveries was the Plitvicka Lakes, a natural lake and falls reserve in central Croatia. Covering more than 73,000 acres, this UNESCO World Heritage site includes 16 lakes, dozens of waterfalls, and multiple rivers flowing through the mountains and ranging in jewel-tone green waters to sapphire blues streams. 7 Tips for Working On The Go

As a professional in the travel industry, part of my job is to stay fresh in my skills and knowledgeable in my craft. This means visiting new locations, touring different cities, testing out the latest markets, inspecting hotel properties, connecting with vendors, sampling various transportation companies and methods, and experiencing both the art and business of travel first hand. The more I can personally taste, smell, touch, and hear in the wide world of travel, the more valuable I am to my clients.

My first-hand experience becomes the trusted resource for those who travel after me. Venturing out first ahead of others, testing the waters, discovering what works, eliminating poor options, and bringing back reliable information, tools, and resources to my clients is definitely one of my favorite perks to this adventurous travel profession!

In order to better serve my clients and hone my craft, this year my wife and I are venturing out and experiencing travel first-hand like never before. In the last 9 months alone, we’ve traversed the United States, hitting many of the major cities all the way from Honolulu to New York City. In December, we turned our focus to Europe and spent three weeks journeying from London, across the Mediterranean, and over to Croatia. This year we’re on the road even more, returning to Europe several more times over the next several months. (There’s even a few Caribbean islands thrown in just for fun!)

Thanks to the wonders of technology and self-employment, both of us are able to pack up our jobs and work while on the road. This lifestyle has enlarged our thinking, broadened our horizons, and created a season of adventure that’s thrilling for us both. While experiencing new cultures and learning more about the current issues in our world, we are able to provide non-stop excellent service to our clients. Working from wherever has taken on a whole new meaning for us this year!

Since we’ve had so much first-hand experience working mobile, I wanted to share a few tips from our recent journeys. Whether you’re a corporate executive, self-employed boss, or non-profit team leader, these seven little working-on-the-go secrets will help you enjoy your travels AND work effectively while on the road.

Work Ahead of Time

Over the last several months, we’ve discovered that working ahead of time is one of the best strategies to implementing a seamless work-on-the-go trip. If you know you’ll be traveling and working simultaneously, work ahead as much as you can. This is a great time to make phone calls, communicate with clients, and send out invoices. Knock out any major client proposals, projects, or deadlines before you begin packing. This may mean a few hours overtime during the weeks you’re home, but it will help you eliminate many emergencies or tight deadlines that may arise while you’re traveling.

Prepare Before and After Lists

Another way to streamline the work-on-the-go method is to prepare before and after lists. By looking ahead at your calendar, you can schedule those heavy-duty work projects and house maintenance chores while at home in between trips. The key to minimizing the stress and maximizing productivity is being organized, planning ahead, and executing discipline.

Rely on Technology and Automation

If you plan on being a frequent traveler, be sure to utilize technology and automate your work projects, communications, finances, and personal responsibilities as much as possible. Set up automated email responses, create digital downloads for clients, sync your devices and software subscriptions, enable mobile or electronic deposits, and set up automated bill paying. These small steps will keep the administrative side of your home and business running smoothly while working on the road.

Be Fully Equipped and Backed Up

There is nothing worse than being far away from your home office and having only 10% left on you cell phone battery. To ensure your profitability from anywhere, pack plenty of extra batteries for your devices and keep them charged at all times. Utilize those few extra minutes at the airport gate or in the coffee shop to charge up your phone, laptop, and battery packs. Whatever you do, don’t be caught miles away from your office with no means of communication. Think smart, plan ahead, and implement a strategy for staying in touch.

Invest in a Mobile Office Carry On

One of the best investments my wife and I made recently was a Delsey spinner carry-on with a front compartment for laptop and tablet and an easy side access compartment for notebooks, shoes, and other necessary items. Whenever we travel, we simply pop in all our mobile office essentials into our carry on bag, and viola! We are ready to work at a moment’s notice. This simple organization tool has been a great asset in keeping us productive while in transit.

Work Time Differences to Your Advantage

If you’re traveling outside of your current time zone, be sure to plan your work day accordingly. For example, a work-on-the go trip to Europe may mean altering your typical workday to maximize your client communication time. In such cases, be willing to step out and spice things up…see the sights during the day and work at night. This flexibility will enable your work to flow with the new rhythm and pace of your mobile destination.

Maintain Healthy Work/Life Balance and Boundaries

Finally, don’t be too focused on work details that you can’t enjoy your trip, and don’t be too lost in your trip that you can’t focus on work. While this may seem like a paradox, the secret is finding and maintaining a healthy balance and rhythm to your life on the road. Set aside time every day during your trip to work uninterrupted so that you can relax and take in the culture when you’re done.

If you’re committed to organization, preparation, discipline, and flexibility, you can optimize your work productivity while operating from a mobile destination. Enjoy the experience, learn what works for you, and work effectively while on the go!

4 Things to Do in Oahu

Hawaii...warm ocean breezes, tropical fruit drinks, lush vegation, relaxation, and exotic island life. For many, a trip to the beautiful islands of Hawaii is a dream vacation!

If you're planning on hitting the sand and surf of our 50th state, I have these few travel suggestions for you:

Don't Spend a Lot of Time in Waikiki

Although Waikiki is a popular tourist destination, it is overcrowded and overpriced. I suggest staying there a night or two if you like and take a day to shop around the glitzy designer stores in the area. You can also base out of Waikiki for island tours and trolley rides.

Take a Hoku Tour Bus Ride

Speaking of island tours, check out Hoku Tours, a division of Roberts Hawaii. Their bus day tours are the best on the island, and they offer a few different tour options. We enjoyed the Circle Island Tour H4, which led us through the entire island with several stops along the way including the Pearl Harbor Memorial and USS Arizona, the Dole Plantation, and several scenic beaches and lookouts on the North Shore. Lunch is included with a short stop and canoe ride at the Polynesian Cultural Center. Oh, and there's plenty to eat and drink along the way with fresh pineapple ice cream from the Dole Plantation and a free Kona coffee and macadamia nut tasting at the Tropical Farms.

Grab Dinner at the Blue Hawaii Food Truck

Waikiki is full of classy and upscale restaurants, but our favorite dinner was from the Blue Hawaii Food Truck just two blocks from the Hilton Waikiki. Offering a tasty selection of fresh fish and seafood, this understated food truck is a delicatessen's dream. Try the garlic shrimp plate or the grilled salmon and shrimp combo, and be prepared to crave it again!

Celebrate Hawaiian Culture

Oahu is not only the best island for shopping and nightlife in Hawaii, but it is also the center of Hawaiian history and culture. The capital city of Honolulu is full of historical and architectural delights including the Iolani Palace (the only palace in the United States) and the statue of King Kamehameha. If you want to dive further into the Polynesian island culture, check out The Polynesian Cultural Center on the outskirts of Honolulu.

As an added bonus, do yourself a favor and spend a night or two on the North Shore, where you'll see some of the most gorgeous beaches and turquoise waters Hawaii has to offer!

How to Travel Safely in 2016

When it comes to safety concerns, times have greatly changed since 9/11, and travel is one of the industries affected most in recent years. While threats of terrorism, natural disasters, and mechanical failures still abound, it is important for travelers to journey with caution, care, and peace. Refusing to give in to fear but remaining alert and wise is key to traveling safely in these times.

As a professional in the industry, I've had many people ask for advice when in comes to safely traveling to their destination. I've compiled a short list here of important tips to keep in mind when safety is a concern.

Check the validity of your passport

Make sure you always have at least 6 months validity on your passport from the date of your return. Many customs officials will refuse travelers access into their country without proper amount of time left on their passport.

In the event of loss or theft, it's also a good idea to make a copy of your passport signature page and carry it with you separately from your passport.

Keep your Embassy's contact info on hand

In case of emergency, your first place of contact and sanctuary is your embassy of nationality in the country you're visiting. Have the name, number, address, and business hours of your embassy with you at all times as you travel abroad. Knowing this vital information is crucial to your personal safety and guaranteed return home in the event of medical emergency, terrorism, or national disaster. Contact your local bank and credit card companies ahead of time

Many banks and credit card companies decline transactions made on foreign soil. To avoid this stressful inconvenience, contact your bank at least 7-10 days prior to departure and let them know when and where you will be traveling. Also, be cautious when using ATMs in foreign countries. Many hackers are using credit card skimmers to obtain credit card information. It's a good idea to check your bank account daily while traveling.

Keep emergency contact information with you at all times

When traveling abroad, keep all emergency contact information on you at all times. This includes next of kin, your local doctor, your travel insurance company, and your travel agent. If anything goes awry, these will be the people you will need to contact first.

Don't panic

In the horrifying event of a terrorist attack or natural disaster, don't panic. It's important to keep a good head about you in times of crisis so you can think clearly and help others. When your life is in danger, immediately take yourself and others with you to a safe place. Obey the laws, be cooperative with local authorities, and stay calm. Your peaceful composure will calm and strengthen others in a difficult situation.

Finally, in case of emergency, I personally recommend reading Psalm 91. It is God's promise to us of His divine protection in times of disaster and trouble.
