Anne-Claude Pepin is bringing African Dance to Cabot Shores. As Anne-Claude says: “African Dance is one of the best way to stay in shape. Every part of the body is actively engaged and the heart rate goes up while listening to great percussion music.”

Sounds like a great workout particularly for this time of the year with spring around the corner. But how about us “older folk” with creaky joints? “Depending how much you abandon yourself to the music,” says Anne-Claude, “it can be quite intense but you can also take it slower by not amplifying the movements as much”. I can appreciate this flexible approach!

Anne-Claude Pepin, your instructor, has taken African Dance class for three years with professional artists from Guinee and Quebec. She now lives on the North Shore of Cape Breton Island. She’s missed dancing so much that has decided to share her passion with us. So come and join us every Sunday at 4 pm at Cabot Shores.

In March, Paul and Barbara were fortunate to be invited to take part in Shedra, or monastic college, at Gampo Abbey. For two weeks we traveled to Gampo Abbey several times a week. The journey itself, a drive on the Cabot Trail through the Cape Breton Highland National Park in winter is spectacular.

More than once, we observed a moose (the same one, we believe) in almost the same location, calmly chewing and regarding us with interest.

Gampo Abbey, North America’s only Tibetan monastery for Western students, is located off the Cabot Trail, high above the Gulf of St.Lawrence.

Under the guidance of master teachers Shastri Alice Haspray and Acharya Pema Chodron, we studied the Principles of Shambhala – how to live from a place of Basic Goodness, of what is already good/complete/rich – our human being-ness – , and how to contact this uplifted energy of now-ness in every situation.

The program consisted of a mix of practice, talks, discussion, and studying (there was even an oral exam, a Warrior Exchange, at the end of the course).

For the small group of lay people who participated, it was a rare opportunity to live alongside the monastics, practice and study together, and share meals and some work.

that’s reviving acoustic roots and folk music, so we are having a Festival across generations,

one that features traditional and original music.

It’s a players and a music lovers’ festival right along the Cabot Trail, outdoors and indoors, with

concerts, open mikes, song writing and other workshops, open air jams all included.

Local artists and crafts people will be there along with local food, prepared with local ingredients, often cooked over a fire.

When we ask guests what they really like to do at Cabot Shores, we get some surprising

You’d think it would be walking into the Great Room of Whiff’s Lodge or looking at the ocean from any
of the 4 chalets…and these are often mentioned…

…but what a lot of guests says is: “it’s the Eagle Feather Ferry” .

Seen from the air, the Eagle Feather crosses Church Pond to the Beach, just about 10 minute walk
from Whiff’s Lodge through the orchard to the edge of the Pnd.

Whether a 91 year old woman

or a band of kids

or those of us in between in age

there’s something magical about
crossing the narrow strait of Church Pond and arriving at a long beach on the ocean, which is a natural
playground for old and young alike.

We awoke to fantastically blue skies on Monday morning, perfect conditions for a hike up the river!

We rounded up the gang, an international selection of woofers from Switzerland, China and UK and some guests, including journalist David Holt and Laughter Yoga teacher Linda LeClerc.

We were of course joined by lively Cosmo who bounded ahead in the Spring sunshine!

We were remarking the trail to the waterfall with orange tape. The path had become somewhat overgrown, so we shifted a few trees and branches as we went and admired the beautiful views.

It was quite a scramble down to the brook.

We enjoyed sights of the waterfall. The water from the brook felt so cool and fresh.

On our way back we even spotted a soaring bald eagle.

A good time was had by all, thanks to Paul for leading the way!

On Monday evening Paul Cranford and Sarah Beck got everyone up on their feet with their authentic Celtic fiddle and Piano music combo!

The Sienna family was celebrating their son’s graduation and two birthdays! 84 year old Aunt Ruth had made the journey all the way from California to be with the rest of the family for a few days holiday on Cape Breton. She was the star of the show as she led her family as well as other guests and staff in some lively square dancing!

We all really enjoyed the live music and dancing, a big thanks goes out to the Sienna family and Paul and Sarah!

In Cape Breton, music is our culture, and culture is our music. At Cabot Shores, you’ll be surrounded by both. For instance, every Tuesday and Friday evenings at 7:30pm, you can join in a Ceilidh at St. Ann’s United Church (just minutes away) hosted by the fantastic fiddler, David Paprizian. You can also see him playing in the local group, Rocky Shores.

Cabot Shores has become a hub for music along the Cabot Trail, with notable musicians like Buddy MacDonald and Jennifer Roland and of course, Rocky Shores, taking the stage. Young and talented newcomers like Rosie Mackenzie and Johnny Muise and recent East Coast Music Award performers like the Heartwood Slacks have provided both traditional celtic and original folk acoustic music.

Now Cabot Shores is the home of the Cabot Trail Acoustic Festival, which will have concerts many Saturday nights during the season and a full blown Cabot Trail Acoustic Festival from July 26-28th. The profits of these events go to the Good Health Festival Society, whose mission is Well-being Through Adventure (especially Well-Being Through Music!).
